Breathe, Damn You!
Warnings: rescue, torture, electrocution, shock, cpr, restraints
Caretaker surged forward the moment that Whumper had been secured. They had to get to Whumpee. Had to make sure Whumpee was ok.
Whumper had restrained Whumpee at the wrists and ankles so that they were standing and attached to a metal bed frame. Whumpee was slumped over, all their weight being held on their wrists. The electrodes attached to their chest trailed down to the car battery that Whumper had been using to torture them for who knows how long.
“Whumpee?” Caretaker called as they turned off the battery, shocking themself in the process. But it didn’t compare to the hours of electrocution that Whumpee faced.
Whumpee didn’t respond. Caretaker couldn’t even see if they were breathing. When Caretaker and the others had breached the room, Whumper had flipped the switch on to the highest setting, delivering what had to be an incredibly painful shock to Whumpee. Caretaker would never forget Whumpee’s shrieking as long as they lived. The shrieking and then silence.
“Whumpee?” Caretaker said again as they reached Whumpee.
Whumpee didn’t respond, but continued to hang in their restraints. Their eyes were closed and their jaw slack.
With a sinking heart, Caretaker pressed their fingers to the pulse in Whumpee’s throat. But no beat came. “Hang on. Whumpee, hang on!” Caretaker quickly began to pry the cuffs off Whumpee’s ankles. Despite having the key to the cuffs, they were still hard to remove. “Hold on,” Caretaker said as they supported Whumpee while removing the wrist cuffs. Whumpee was not being freed fast enough. They weren’t breathing. They had no pulse. But Caretaker had to get Whumpee free before they could help them.
As Whumpee slumped forward onto Caretaker once Caretaker had freed their wrists, Caretaker quickly got to work. There was no time. They began to pump Whumpee’s chest. “Come on, Whumpee. Come on.”
Whumpee had to wake, had to breathe. Caretaker just found them. Caretaker found them. Whumper had been stopped! “Please, Whumpee. Please.”
Caretaker paused to give a rescue breath as Whumpee continued to remain pale and still. “Breathe, damn you! Breathe!” Caretaker urged. They couldn’t lose Whumpee. Not like this.
“Damn it, Whumpee. Breathe!”
Caretaker’s pleas were suddenly interrupted by Whumpee’s sudden sharp breath. Caretaker sagged with relief, rubbing Whumpee’s chest as Whumpee coughed and sucked in air. “You’re ok, you’re ok, you’re ok,” they murmured. Because Whumpee was ok. And that’s all that mattered.

Whumptober Day 16: Flatline
Okay so I picked “flatline” but it’s not... EXACTLY flatlining. His heart’s kinda still going, so it only sort of counts but who cares anyway I got inspired by that one so that’s what it’s about—
...this one’s a little heavy.
(Also thanks @silvrash-797 for some help with ideas :)
Read on ao3
Warnings: serious injury, mention of broken bones, CPR is necessary
————————————————————
It happened so fast that even when he looked back on it later, Four still wasn’t entirely sure what happened.
Their group was standing at the top of a cliff, discussing how best to climb down and studying the long fall below. Wild jumped out with his paraglider and was making lazy circles in the air while he studied the cliff, pointing out what looked like a less steep area for them to climb down.
They’d all just decided it was the safest way when something caught Four’s eye, something small and fast zipping over their heads—
An arrow?
...headed directly for Wild.
“Champion!” he shouted, but Wild hadn’t seen the arrow, and couldn’t turn fast enough to do anything.
It flew straight at him, slitting a hole right across Wild’s paraglider and catching it at the perfect angle to rip the top nearly in two.
Four watched almost in slow motion as Wild let out a single shocked yelp, the arrow embedding in his arm, then dropped like a stone through the air. He fell out of sight into the trees below them, but only seconds went by before Sky and Wind were already leaping down after him, their faces white as they snapped open their own gliders.
Four shook himself out of his shock and began frantically searching for the best way down the cliff, Twilight slamming a mask over his eyes and shooting an arrow into the forest behind them.
Four registered a scream from a monster as he began to go down the less steep side Wild had spotted only moments ago, and seconds later Twilight was beside him, his face drawn with worry. The others stayed back to fight the monsters that were running out of the woods, but Four knew they had the small group handled.
Wild was their priority.
They reached the bottom and Twilight turned into a wolf, nose in the air already sniffing. His ears perked, and Four hopped on his back before he tore off into the woods, paws pounding against the ground.
Four’s heart was in his throat as they ran, heart beating almost as loudly as Twilight’s pawsteps. He’s fine, surely he’s fine, he can survive a fall from that height, it’s not likely but it’s possible oh Goddesses please let him be okay—
Twilight nearly skidded to a stop, and Four had to clutch him in order not to be flung. He jumped off at Twilight’s nudge, and the wolf turned towards a particularly thick section of bushes, shoving his way through with Four following.
And on the other side was Wild, snapped twigs scattered all around him, lying in a small smear of blood.
Twilight practically threw himself forward, changing into a hylian as he moved, and Four ran up beside him in horror. Wild lay crumpled in a heap among the bushes, blood trickling from his nose, his arms both at odd angles. The offending arrow stuck up out of his shoulder, but Four barely noticed, his gaze stuck on the rest of him.
“Wild— Champion, can you hear me?” Twilight said frantically, fluttering his hands overtop of him, unsure of what to do. Four took a slow step closer, unable to look away from Wild, eyes glued to his chest.
Wild was still.
Too still.
“Link, come on,” Twilight choked out, and Four dropped to his knees beside him, still staring at his chest.
“He’s not breathing,” Four said suddenly, the realization like a splash of cold water. “Twi he’s not—”
Twilight made a choked noise and Four lurched forward, carefully setting his head over Wild’s chest.
A thin, thready beat met him.
“He’s not gone yet,” Four gasped, and looked at Twilight, his face twisted in horror, eyes shiny. “We don’t have any fairies, we need Hyrule, you gotta go get him.”
Twilight stared between him and Wild with an agonized expression, but then he bolted back into the woods, shifting into a wolf as he went.
Four turned back to Wild, and breathed out, panic threatening to overwhelm him.
Not right now, you need to get him breathing again! his brain shrieked, and Four quickly moved to make sure Wild was in a good enough position.
Then he started rhythmically pressing on Wild’s chest, trying to remember the exact technique to get him breathing.
It had been a long time since part of him had read that medical book, but he still remembered most of what to do. Up and down in a regular beat on the chest, then breathing air back into the person’s lungs, back and forth to get their breathing going.
He just hoped it would be enough until Twilight came back.
Distantly he heard Sky and Wind run up, heard their gasps of horror, saw in the corner of his eyes as they kneeled at his side, but his focus was on Wild, and trying to get him to breathe.
Push down hard, but not too hard, stop and breathe into his lungs, start the compressions again—
More footsteps pounded next to him, and a hand suddenly pulled at his shoulder, despite how Four tried to throw it off.
He couldn’t stop, he had to keep going or Wild would be in an even worse state when Twilight came back, he might not even be able to be saved—
“Four, we have Hyrule, you need to let him work!” a voice shouted, and Four stopped pushing, letting the hands tug him backwards.
He watched almost dazedly as Hyrule moved to where he’d been kneeling, hands glowing a bright, intense blue. Warriors was next to him, saying something as he felt along Wild’s neck and shoulders, but Four could only watch in silence, blood roaring in his ears.
Please let it have been enough please let it have been enough please—
Wild jerked slightly, and Four heard a gasp of relief beside him, Legend pulling a shaking Hyrule back from Wild. The traveler began to argue, but Legend didn’t budge, and when Hyrule nearly fell over, the veteran pulled him further out of the way.
Four could only watch as Wild slowly stirred, Warriors working to make sure Hyrule had done what he’d needed. Wild’s eyes flickered uncertainly, and blood still trickled from his nose, but he was already trying to sit up, Warriors firmly stopping him from moving.
“He’s breathing, he’s okay, you and Hyrule did it Four,” Twilight breathed from next to him, and Four could only nod, still watching Wild.
The champion couldn’t even keep his eyes open all the way, and Time knelt next to him then, helping Warriors with the arrow Hyrule had accidentally healed into Wild’s arm. Four watched as Twilight moved to grab Wild’s hand, and the champion’s eyes closed again, face creased with pain.
Four swallowed. He’s fine, he’s fine he’s fine he’s fine he’s fine.
Sky gave him a concerned look from where he was kneeled, and moved closer to him, a hand settling over his.
“Are you all right Smithy?” he asked, and Four nodded yet again, reaching up to rub at his cheek.
His hand came back damp.
Four blinked in surprise, staring at the tears on his fingers and wondering when exactly he’d started crying. Why was he even crying at all? He wasn’t hurt, and Wild was okay now, breathing and being tended to by the others. There wasn’t any reason...
A wet hiccup suddenly escaped him, and Sky moved forward and pulled him into his arms, rubbing his back when a sound more like a sob came out.
“You did it Four, he’s alive, he’s okay,” Sky said a bit shakily, and Four swallowed, trying not to utterly break down in Sky’s arms.
He wasn’t usually one for hugging, at least not all the time. But under the current circumstances, the memory of Wild’s motionless body still sharp in his mind...
He sank further into Sky’s arms, and didn’t resist when he pulled his sailcloth over him, a hand running through his hair.
“He’s okay,” Sky repeated quietly, and Four clung to those words like a drowning man.
He’s okay.

You walk towards Nanami kissing his cheek "can we go out for a coffe?"
Nanami gives you a small smile, gently brushing your hair aside "Of course, I would love to."
You purred against Nanami touch snuggling on his neck "buuut can we take it on the beach?" You asked making those puppy eyes
Nanami chuckles, running his fingers through your hair "To see the sunset, hm?" His voice grows softer, as if imagining the scene "We can take a walk through the sand, see the waves crash… Maybe see some stars as the night falls…"
You snuggle more into Nanami touch "Yes"
Nanami chuckles affectionately, wrapping his arms around you "I know just the spot…"
You snuggled more into Nanami chest purring and cooing
Nanami chuckles, gently playing with your hair "And afterwards we'll find somewhere private…"
Nanami chuckles again, holding you close "Where we can just… Lay down for a while…"
"Snuggling under the umbrella" you added cooing
Nanami chuckles "Mhm mhm… Let's just cuddle and watch the sun fade away together…"
𓇼𖦹 ⋆☀︎. 𖦹 𓇼𓇼𖦹 ⋆☀︎. 𖦹 𓇼𓇼𖦹 ⋆☀︎. 𖦹 𓇼𓇼𖦹 ⋆☀︎. 𖦹 𓇼𓇼𖦹 ⋆☀︎. 𖦹
The waves crash against the shore, the air carrying the salt of the sea and the summer breeze. Nanami holds you close to his chest as you walk down, the sky a mixture of pinks, reds, and purples. The sun slowly starts to dip behind the horizon, the sea becoming darker as the sky begins to turn. You make your way to a secluded spot away from the crowd, sand beneath your feet and only the gentle lapping of water surrounding you.
You were sitting on the beach towel looking at the waves but not daring to took away your cover up dress, too ashamed of your own body
Nanami sits next to you on the towel, watching the waves crash against the shore. He sighs softly as he gazes at the sea, lost in his thoughts. Then he glances at you "… You know I don't mind if you don't want to take off your cover up… There's no need to force yourself if you feel uncomfortable…"
Nanami sighs, noticing your discomfort, but knows better than to force anything on you, not wanting to makeyou feel even more uncomfortable. He wraps his arm around your shoulders, brushing the hair off your face "You're beautiful the way you are, you know that… Even in your cover up and all…"
"… Plus… It'll look pretty cool if you got a tan while still covered up…" Nanami chuckles softly, gently squeezing your shoulder
Nanami watches your every move as you let the waves splash against your body, your feet slowly sinking into the shallow water. He remains seated, taking in the sight before him, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of red and orange. The sky slowly begins to darken, the waves grow calm, and Nanami can see a plethora of stars beginning to dot the black sky.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?…" Nanami's voice breaks the silence, his words carried by the gentle breeze
"I've always found the ocean to be quite peaceful… In a sense, it's sort of a mirror to life… The waves crashing against the shore… Coming and going… And then there are nights like this, where the ocean is as still as a mirror, the sky above us reflecting the calmness and beauty of the universe itself…" Nanami's gaze is fixed on the sky above you cherishing it
"You know… I've always heard that the sea reflects the sky… So in a sense…" Nanami chuckles "It might as well be reflecting your beauty…"
"… You know… The ocean is a vast and endless place… And yet… No matter where you are, as long as you're looking at it… The view is always the same…" Nanami gently strokes your hair "Much like how I always view you… No matter how many times I look at you… I always see the same beautiful person…"
The peaceful scene of the ocean begins to distort, the waves crashing against the beach slowly morphing into a more aggressive tone. The calmness of the night is suddenly replaced by a frantic scene as Nanami's voice is drowned out by the sound of waves, replaced by cries and screams of despair. He is suddenly thrown into a scene of chaos, watching himself perform CPR as he desperately tries to save your life, desperately grasping onto any bit of hope.
Panicked screams and terrified shouting fill the air, tears and sweat dripping from his face as he presses frantically onto your chest . His heart pounding in his chest, he feels powerless, helpless. Every part of him is pleading and praying to any deity or being, begging for your life to be saved. He refuses to give up, even if he feels like it's a lost cause. He refuses to give up. He refuses. He will not lose you.
"Breathe, dammit! Breathe! Come on, please. Please, don't you dare leave me!" Nanami's voice is strained as he desperately gives you CPR.
And yet… The silence suddenly returns, the cries of desperation suddenly vanishing as the peaceful sight of the ocean returns. He feels… calm again. No longer frantic, he feels… a sense of relief wash over him, his arms no longer shaking. He can breathe. He's at peace. A peace that is suddenly interrupted by your gasping, pulling in a full breath of air. After a couple of seconds, your body begins to stir, coughing out the water that had remained in your lungs. Nanami's arms immediately clutch tightly around you as tears begin to stream down his face.
"Honey, can you hear me?…" *Nanami's voice shakes as he asks, fear still evident in his tone. He grips onto you tight, the sense of relief washing over him as he feels your body move, your chest heaving, breathing and coughing, alive once again.
"My God, you scared me to death, I thought I had lost you…" Nanami murmurs, his voice full of relief, hugging you tightly to his chest. Tears spill out of his eyes as his relief turns to joy. He holds you closer, desperate to make sure you're really alive, to make sure that this isn't just a figment of his imagination.
"I… I'm so sorry…" you mutter, your voice raspy and hoarse. You weakly grips onto Nanami as you're pulled in closer, your body trembling but slowly stabilises itself. Your eyes are half-lidded, barely staying open. Though you're conscious, you still seems to be in a daze.
Nanami holds you closer, gently brushing the hair out of your eyes. "Don't say sorry, shh…" He gently strokes your hair as he continues to hold you close "… I'm just… just glad you're alive…"
"I…" you continued to murmur, but Nanami cuts youoff, gently placing his finger against your lips "Don't say anything more… We can talk later, okay? Right now… all that matters is that you're alive.."
"Y-yeah…" you nods slowly, your eyes still half-lidded, your body still trembling but slowly getting better. You wrap your arms tightly around Nanami, holding him close as you buried your face into his chest. Nanami wraps his arms tightly around you, pulling you close and letting him hold you as tightly as he needs.
"what happend…i just remember you talking and then…"
"Shh, It's alright." Nanami says, gently wrapping his arms firmly around you as he brushes the hair out of your face "I-It was just a wave…. You just… You got caught up in the current… and got carried away…"
"… But your safe and alive now…" Nanami says, gently caressing your hair "and that's all that matters…"
"But what if I didn't make it?" you asked softly, fear still evident in your voice "What if you weren't there?…"
"But I was there." Nanami reassures you, running his fingers through your hair "And I would do anything to save someone I love… Especially you…"
"…" You still seems shaken by the event, but your grip around Nanami slowly loosens, slowly letting go as the adrenaline from earlier begins to wear off. Nanami continues to hold you close, gently strokingyour hair as tears of relief start to stream down his face.
"And I love you." Nanami sighs, looking at you in the eyes "More than anything… So don't ever forget that…"
"I love you too…" you said softly, your voice still raspy, your eyes barely opening. You lean your head against his shoulder, resting in Nanami's arms, exhausted and shaken from the experience.
"Let's just… relax here for a while… Maybe we can go back home in a while…" Nanami says, gently rubbing your back "I'll just.. let you rest…"

⚠️⚠️ it’s long & it’s sad ⚠️⚠️
TPOL!JK
“you? a saint? i doubt that” shrugs namjoon before throwing the cigarette on the ground and crushing it. he puts his hands in his pockets listening to jungkook lash out at him how he come in between the “relationship” you moved past years ago but he clearly hasn’t moved on. his poor friend looks pathetic in namjoon’s eyes, pity jungkook. he doesn’t remember jungkook acting like this when it came to him breaking things off with tina so he doesn’t understand why he’s so hung up on you. you’re not even his type.
you’re pretty small, a bit curvier, and have interests jungkook doesn’t even care about yet you somehow got him wrapped around your pinky and took two bullets because of him. yeah, namjoon knows about that too.
jungkook has always, ALWAYS been into models. 5’7 beautiful petite women whose status was on par with his own yet here he is obsessing over you, clearly infatuated with you while you seemed to have moved on. it reminds namjoon of jaekuk. that bastard ruined ji-ae’s life and even his last words were pertaining to her because he couldn’t let her go and here is jungkook doing the same.
obviously, namjoon is lying. he’d never hurt a hair on your head but he has to sound serious to get jungkook to back off and he’s getting there. his comment clearly threw jungkook for a loop and has hit a nerve of his. all namjoon has to do is sound believable. he is a lawyer after all.
“and guess what? she’ll still like me if i tell her. she took you back when you verbally abused her any chance you got, so this isn’t any different” shrugs namjoon who is clearly pressing all the right buttons to set jungkook off.
“i do love her. i love her enough to keep her away from a psychopath like you. so here’s what i’ll leave you with, stay far away from y/n and no one has to get hurt. not your mother, y/n, or you. cool? good, see you, kook” says namjoon before he’s heading back to you leaving jungkook outside alone.
once namjoon is back inside, you rise from the couch with a worried look on your face. “did…did everything go okay? are you okay? he didn’t hurt you right? guess what? he threatened yerin!” you say while checking for scratches and marks on namjoon.
“baby, baby, i’m fine but…you might be upset with me”
“why?”
“i…i threatened to kill you if jungkook didn’t leave you alone”
“WHAT THE HELL!!” yells yerin. “first he’s threatening me with my infidelity and now you’re threatening to kill her. the both of you are fucked up, seriously”
“why would you say that? that’s not funny, namjoon”
“you know i’d never do that though but he looked pretty convinced i would”
you’re rubbing your hands over your temples to help ease your oncoming headache from everything that’s happening on your birthday night. all in one night.
“i’m going home” you say before grabbing your stuff, clearly over the drama that’s brewing. it’s the jeon jaekuk situation all over again and you refuse to linger around.
“baby, please don’t be upset. i didn’t mean it” pleads namjoon who takes your hand and begs you to not be upset because he’d never hurt you, ever. “i just…i just want to rest okay? i’ll call you when i’m home” you say before planting a kiss on his cheek and leaving his apartment, clearly in your feelings about the situation. your birthday is ruined and you’re in tears about it.
why is it every time you try to gain some peace in your life, people threaten to disturb it or take it away from you. when you arrive outside, you see jungkook heading towards you but you don’t pay him any mind. he’s the reason why you’re crying and according to him, you’re strangers anyway so you’re sure he doesn’t care about your tears. he’s probably enjoying himself.
when you arrive to your condo, you’re greeted by an excited mochi but his excitement dials down upon your heartbroken face. you face plant into your bed and without holding back you scream in your pillows.
you’re angry, hurt, sad, scared, and lonely. your eyes look at the frame of your dead mother and that’s all it takes for you to breakdown. “i can’t do this, mom. i-i need you” you whisper while taking the frame and holding it close to your chest. you’re not happy without her and you can’t go on like this. surely there’s a better life for you somewhere and that is with her.
so, you fill your bathtub with cold water, grab two bottles of soju that namjoon left, and lock your bathroom door. you undress yourself and soak in the cold water while drinking your sorrows away. by the time you finish the first bottle you’re already drunk but you continue drinking anyways until you pass out.
your drunk mind hears banging on your door but you simply remove your hearing aid and toss it somewhere to drown out the noise. you don’t want any interruptions, you just want to drown because that’s what it feels like. it feels like you’re drowning and literally you are.
your head is below the water but you’re too drunk to realize it and too sad to lift it up.
Of course he is following you, even from far away, he could tell that you were really upset, and he’s also scared for your safety from his friend that just threatened to kill you.
And as soon as he is in front of your house, Jungkook gets out of his car and starts banging on your door and even rings the bell, “yn?!??” he has to see you he knows that he’s an asshole, and that you’ve moved on from him, but he hasn’t moved on from you- why can’t you be together? And he knows that he hurt you pretty bad and he still hates you a lot… but he just has a bad feeling about this.
He knows that you shouldn’t be alone right now. And your pathetic boyfriend didn’t even have it in him to apologize to you or come after you.
It’s so clear he doesn’t love you as much as Jungkook loves you. “Y-Yn!!!!!??!! Open the damn fucking door!” He curses under his breath because he’s been banging on your door for the past five minutes and you are not responding.
Jungkook screams in frustration as he yells “YOU ASKED FOR THIS I’M GONNA BREAK THIS FUCKING DOOR.” And with that he starts to push on the door with his whole strength. His body is banging against the door…. It is really hard to break through this.
But he has to even if it’s impossible.
Jungkook looks for another way, and then he remembers that you have a security code that he remembers all too well so he looks for the machine and he input the code- opening the door.”
And frantically he’s inside your house looking for you. When he doesn’t find you in your living room, he’s into your bedroom. Of course you’d be there.
But you are not, Jungkook searches your room like a desperate man, but you are not there. “Yn!!!!” he’s calling out your name with you are still not responding to him maybe you are too upset with him and maybe you’re just not home.
Jungkook closes his eyes and tries to calm down, but something is telling him that he has to look for you in your home- because something is about to go very wrong.
So he’s looking all over your house and then after he’s done, but there’s no sign of you, he has no choice, but to inspect your bathroom.
the door- it doesn’t open while he tries to open it but no use.
So he has to break this one down.
And after like a few tries, it finally breaks down- oh his shoulder is gonna be sore. But it’s all worth it.
As soon as he’s into your bathroom, he notices the tub filled with water in the water is still going on so worried he’s looking into your tub and what he sees next makes goosebumps appear on his skin, and his leg start to shake.
You’re drowning
“O-OH MY GOD YN!!?!!” He cries out your name as he tries to get you out of the tub- but your body feels too heavy- jungkook is frantic right now- he’s cursing under his breath, he’s trying to get your body out-
And finally, he’s got a hold of you.
So he quickly takes your body out of the tub and then he spots the soju bottles. Both are empty.
And then he realizes that you almost drank yourself to death
And haunts him if he was even a minute late then-
Jungkook picks your body up bridal style and lays you onto the bed- after running towards your bedroom with you in his arms.
“Y-Yn wake up.” He’s rubbing your hands- trying to give you some warmth because you are not conscious, and your lips are starting to turn a little blue.
Just how long were you in the tub???
“Y-Yn fuck!!!? DON’T JOKE WITH ME AND JUST WAKE UP!” Jungkook is crying, he doesn’t know what to do- the water was freezing cold he knows.
There’s only one thing left because you are not moving an inch. You are naked and your body feels cold.
So he in panic tries to think of something and then it hits him.
CPR.
He presses down hard, to a third of the depth of the chest, then he waits for the chest to come back up. After 30 chest compressions, you are still not waking up.
“YN!??!” He cries out.
You need to breathe.
So he immediately pushes his mouth into yours and tries to give you mouth to mouth, hoping you’ll wake up.
“YN WAKE UP OH MY GOD!”

Tonic-Clonic Seizure First Aid
TW for talk of death, CPR.
Please note that this post is to help in the worst case scenario of someone experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure. All of the things mentioned are possible, but hopefully won't happen. At the end of the post I have written a best case scenario of what it looks like when everything goes right.
What is a Tonic-Clonic Seizure?
A tonic-clonic seizure is the type of seizure that probably pops into your head when someone says seizure. Think muscle spasms, shaking and unresponsive.
Call for Help, Start a Timer
If someone starts seizing, before you jump into action, take a breath. Either start a stopwatch or check and remember the time (to the minute) that the seizure started. This is very important as seizures can be very dangerous the longer they last, and the ambulance will want to know this information.
Speaking of ambulances, call your emergency service number. If you're in public, get someone passing by to call for you. Be specific; say something like "You in the purple shirt! Call an ambulance!". It's shown that people will just assume someone else is going to call if they're not told directly.
Okay, now it's time to start assessing the situation. Anyone who's done a first aid course before might be familiar with the primary survey: DRABC. If not, here is a helpful link for anyone who wants to learn it when applied to general medical emergencies. This primary survey will focus on tonic-clonic seizures.
Danger
The first step of your primary survey is danger. You want to assess the danger to the patient and, more importantly, yourself. If a person is seizing in the middle of a road, wait until the road is clear to approach them (if it becomes safe to approach at all). You are of no help to the person seizing if you're hurt.
While we're on the subject: only move the person seizing if they are in danger where they are. If they're on the floor, they can't fall any further, so don't try and move them onto a bed or sofa. Place something somewhat soft and cushioned (rolled-up sweater, pillow, backpack etc.) under their head to prevent damage. Move things like flowerpots, end tables etc., away if they're likely to hit them.
Also, do not hold someone having a seizure down. Scenario one: the person is stronger than you, and you get dislocated joint. Scenario two: you are stronger than them, and they get a dislocated joint. Either way, bad idea. Their muscles can and will keep spasming no matter what you do. Let them thrash around. If anything that will hurt them if they hit it is out of the way, leave them be.
Once you have assessed danger and removed any potential hazards (if safe to do so), you won't be able to complete the rest of the primary survey until the seizure has finished; however, the information below is good to consider during the seizure.
Response
The person should start coming around within a few minutes of the seizure ending. Speak to them calmly and tell them what happened. Encourage them to sit up, preferably leaning against something. They will likely be disoriented for a while, which is absolutely normal. Be reassuring and let them know that they are safe.
When someone has a tonic-clonic seizure, they will be unresponsive, so there is no need to check their level of response during the seizure.
Once they have stopped seizing, you will need to check their level of response. First, call their name, or say "Can you hear me?" quite loudly into each ear (they may be d/Deaf or hard of hearing on one side). If they don't respond, try shaking their shoulder firmly. Finally, squeeze one of their fingertips quite hard. They are unresponsive if they don't react to any of those stimuli. This is good information to tell the ambulance crew when they arrive.
Airway
If you can, try and look in the person's mouth to see if there is anything obstructing their airway, especially if they were eating before they seized. While it isn't a massive problem for the moment as they aren't breathing (more about that in the Breathing section) when they come around, if there is something blocking their airway, they may choke. Keep in mind though, that a lot of people will clench their jaw when they seize. Do not try and pry it open, you might lose a finger (seriously, jaws are strong). Again, inform the ambulance crew when they arrive if you think there may be something in their airway. Even if you're wrong, better safe than sorry.
Whilst we're on airway: please, please, please do not under any circumstances put anything in the person's mouth. For a very long time, people have held the belief that preventing the person from biting their tongue warrants putting something in their mouth. Yeah, the person may bite their tongue. Yeah, it might bleed. Yeah, it'll hurt like hell. But, better a bitten tongue than choking on something. Seriously, just don't do it.
Breathing
So, like I mentioned before, a person having a tonic-clonic seizure won't be breathing. This is normal for a tonic-clonic seizure but it is obviously dangerous for the person as their brain won't be getting oxygen. There is nothing you can do to fix that they aren't breathing. They will hopefully start breathing on their own again after the seizure finishes. If the seizure ends and they don't start breathing, and the ambulance has not arrived, call emergency services back and let them know. Similarly, if the seizure lasts for more than two minutes, call emergency services again (official guidance in most places says five minutes but the brain starts to deteriorate with no oxygen after two).
If the seizure stops and the person does not start breathing for themselves, re-assess response and airway. If they are unresponsive and their airway is clear, move on to Circulation.
Circulation
Start CPR if the person is no longer seizing and is not breathing. It is imperative to note: the person must not be seizing when you start CPR. If they are moving by themselves, do not start CPR. If they are moving, they do not require resuscitation, and you will crack their ribs for no good reason.
If you have never been taught CPR before, I will explain how to do it here; however, I recommend watching this video on how to perform CPR (the video is for an adult, but the same channel also has child and baby CPR videos).
Start by positioning yourself on your knees, facing the person's torso from the side. Place the heel of your dominant hand in the centre of their chest, directly on the sternum, between the nipples/pectoral area. There is a picture below for reference:
Tumblr media
Place your non-dominant hand over your dominant, and interlock your fingers.
You can do two types of CPR: compression-only or compression and rescue breath CPR.
As the name suggests, compression-only CPR is where you only perform compressions. This is done by firmly pressing down on the chest by using your body weight. You should aim to press down around 1/3 of their chest (guidelines suggest 5-6cm, but this isn't always enough for plus-size people). You will need to push incredibly hard. You will feel their ribs crack; this is normal and, frankly, required for effective CPR.
You should pump their chest hard and fast, between 100 and 120 beats per minute. An excellent way to keep track of the rate is by humming "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees or "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen and pushing at the same rhythm as the song. Do this continuously, swapping out with another person where possible when you become fatigued. CPR is tough work, and you will tire very quickly. There is no shame in needing a break.
Compression and rescue breath CPR has the same compression element (1/3 of the chest, 100-120 beats a minute, etc.) but with what are known as rescue breaths added. Please note: you are under no circumstances required to perform rescue breaths. If you are uncomfortable or not confident in doing rescue breaths, do compression-only CPR.
To perform rescue breaths, you need to tilt the person's head back slightly and pinch their nose. Then, form a seal around their mouth with yours, and blow for 2 seconds. You will need to do this twice and remove your mouth from theirs to look down the chest to check if their chest is rising in between the two breaths. Then start compressions again. You will need to perform 30 compressions, then two breaths, then 30 compressions, then two breaths, et cetera. Continue until emergency services arrive and you are told to stop. Swap out with another person when you get tired where possible.
If there is one available, get a defibrillator (so known as an AED). They tend to be in public places such as shopping centres and gyms. The machine will speak and tell you what to do. Most models also have LCD screens with instructions for those of you who are d/Deaf and HOH.
And that concludes first aid for tonic-clonic seizures! If you have any questions, or want to point out anything I missed, please shoot me an ask or a DM!
Apologies for the length of this, but I wanted it to be as comprehensive as possible for people who have never had training or been taught about medical emergencies.

It's like I've been silent in my mind during this whole day because I assisted in a paramedic training/simulation today and it messed me up, so I'm going to tell you all about it, so you get a slice of messed up too:
It was about pregnant people emergency C-section because of cardiac arrest of the mother
If a pregnant person goes into cardiac arrest, you're pretty safe to assume that the baby is dead. No matter what.
If a pregnant person (with a big belly) goes into cardiac arrest you have to do an emergency C-section of their dead baby in 4-5 minutes
The C-section is necessary, because otherwise CPR is ineffective, since the uterus is pressing down on the abdominal aorta and vena cava
Usual gynecologist performed incision is a horizontal incision at the bottom of the belly; the emergency incision made by paramedics goes from the belly button down
The same large incision goes for the uterus, pretty much damaging it forever
During the process, bladder and intestines are possible to be cut too, but that's okay, because there is no time to think about it if one wants to keep the person alive
Once you get to the amniotic sac, you can puncture it with the scalpel (or scissors), or just put your hands there and tear it apart, it doesn't matter
Once again, you do not pay attention on not hurting the baby in the amniotic sac, because the baby is most probably very dead.
You get the baby out like whatever. Gynecologists have a special maneuver, but it's an emergency, you have a time restriction, and you have to yank the baby out.
Once you've done that clamp and cut the umbilical cord and just leave the corpse wherever
Hooray you've performed one of the worst medical procedures I've ever heard of
If the circulation of the person you're saving gets back on, you put towels in your previous incision. Like frotte towels.
At the end of it all you have a patient with a dead baby, huge permanent scar, a very high possibility of having lost the ability to get pregnant again, a possible inability to normally poop or pee for a while (because of the cut intestines and bowel), probably an infection of some kind (no time for proper sterility in this procedure), pain, and well, whatever the effects of regular CPR are

My father-in-law died today, and I was more or less there when he died. We're all at a hotel and my mother-in-law found him unconscious and I called 911 and his heart stopped a few minutes after the ambulance arrived.
I mostly keep thinking about the way his stomach jolted from the chest compressions and how uncomfortable it looked.
Grief is a funny thing. I'm crying more today than I did when my grandmother died. I don't know if I'm sad, exactly, but I'm crying, so I guess I must be.
He was a dear man and we have no regrets and he's with the Lord now. But everything is upside down here.

ok, so I’m a lifeguard, trained and certified, all that pizazz.
And I just wanted to clarify something. CPR alone cannot bring someone back. CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing through the body, prevented the body from shutting down and the person from going brain dead.
In order for your character to ‘jump’ back alive, there needs to be an electric shock, in a modern au that should normally be an AED and a lot of places have that somewhere in the facility somewhere, and in powered universes you can have an electrically powered person do it.
In fact, its almost more angst-filled to have character A doing CPR, knowing that as the time goes by, without an AED, without EMS getting there, the chances of character B coming back and making a full recovery are getting exponentially lower.
Not to mention CPR is VERY tiring, it’s why lifeguards rotate who is doing the compressions, so if its just character A there to do the CPR, describing the burn of their arms, their back, their muscles all while fighting tears is something that would be very compelling for some readers.

Perfect Body to the Grave
Warnings: captivity, buried alive, suffocation, cpr, unclear character status
Team Leader stumbled in the mud as they frantically searched for the stone that Whumper said would mark where they buried Teammate One just over an hour ago. The rain came down cold and hard on their back as they tried to look for the stone.
"They were alive when I put them there, Team Leader. Would be a shame if you got there and they weren't," Whumper had said as Teammate Two dragged them to a cell.
Team Leader had wasted no time hurrying to where they hoped to find Teammate One. They hadn't accounted for the storm creating so much mud it would be hard to see a stone. They sunk to their knees as they realized that they wouldn't find the stone in all this mud. Their knee collided with something hard and flat and it had their teeth zinging.
The stone.
"Over here!" They called to Teammate Two and Teammate Three as they started to clear the mud. It would take the whole team to clear all the mud from the top of the casket.
"Hurry, they can't have much air left," Teammate Two said as they started to shovel with a frenzy.
"We'll make it," Teammate Three muttered. "We have to make it."
Team Leader agreed. They had to make it. They couldn't not make it. Teammate One was counting on them. The three team members were sweating by the time they had cleared the mud enough that the top of the casket was cleared.
"We're here, Teammate One, we're here," Team Leader muttered as they swung open the lid of the casket.
"No!" Teammate Two's cry came from somewhere on Team Leader's right.
Teammate One lay on their back, eyes closed, their mouth slightly agape. Their face was pale and their lips tinged blue. "Not like this, Teammate One, not like this," Team Leader muttered as they leaned over and to listen to see if Teammate One took a breath.
"They're not breathing!" Teammate Three whispered as Team Leader moved once more.
"Not like this," Team Leader muttered as they pressed their fingers to the pulse in Teammate One's neck. But no beat came.
Without missing a beat, Team Leader began chest compressions. "Come on, Teammate One, come on. Come back to us. Take a breath. Open your eyes. We're here. We've got you."
Teammate Two leaned down and gave two quick rescue breaths. "Please, Teammate One," they begged, "come back to us."
Teammate Three took Teammate One's cold hand in theirs, fingers going to the stilled pulse in Teammate One's wrist. They didn't say anything as tears streamed down their face.
Team Leader couldn't stop. Couldn't bear to think that this was it. That the team had failed Teammate One. That Whumper had won. That Teammate One was....but they couldn't think it. They continued to pump Teammate One's chest with everything they had. "Breathe, Teammate One. Come on. Breathe!"

When was the first time you were frightened by something you did?
Allowing myself to be killed and reborn Less frightened, more anxious about most of the things I do. It's a blast.

Although CPR was really scary for the first time. Feeling ribs crack is not exactly a pleasant sensation.

CPR in hospitals
I did a post on doing cpr as a 'civilian' (i.e. in public with no equipment). But most people who follow me are writers! So here's how it goes down in hospital.
It varies on where someone is in hospital having a cardiac arrest, so this is just for if a patient is in a hospital bed with monitoring on.
The first sign is going to the monitor going crazy and the patient unconscious.
Step 1 - pull the emergency button and start chest compressions (they are still the most important thing!)
Step 2 - someone else will give rescue 'breaths' using an oxygen mask and bag (technically called a bag valve mask or BVM). Two breaths after every 30 compressions
Step 3 - someone else is cutting clothes off and putting defibrillator pads on. An anaesthetist may also intubate the patient and put them on a ventilator (this means you can do compressions continuously)
Step 4 - the defibrillator will scan the heart rhythm. If it's shockable (ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation) then everyone steps away while it shocks. As soon as it's safe, CPR continues (most defibrillators determine the rhythm and calculate voltage automatically)
Step 5 - if it's a non-shockable rhythm, give IV adrenaline ASAP
Step 6 - if it's a shockable rhythm, wait 2 minutes after first shock, check and shock again. Repeat a third time.
Step 7 - if the patient is still in cardiac arrest after 3 shocks, give IV adrenaline and amiodarone
Step 8 - continue CPR and give adrenaline every 5 minutes.
The person giving compressions should switch every 60 compressions (two cycles of 30) - the next person is counted in so there's no time without compressions
There are 10 main causes of cardiac arrest - while all of this is happening a team of doctors will be trying to work out the cause so they can treat it. I won't go into the causes because it's boring and technical.
CPR, defibrillation, and drugs will continue until the cardiac arrest stops or the patient is declared deceased.
If someone is in hospital because of hypothermia, remember! They're not dead until they're warm! (there have been cases of hypothermia patients being successfully resuscitated after over 5 hours of CPR!)

Whump Prompt #1313
Anon asked:
Do you have any prompts for a whump involving CPR? I discovered your blog and instantly fell in love😊
Thank you for the kind words! I have a couple, but I want to preface that I am in no way a medical professional, so I am relying on internet sources.
CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart. Its main purpose is to restore the partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart. The objective is to delay tissue death and to extend the brief window of opportunity for a successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage. (Wikipedia)
Unlike the movies, people do not just gasp awake. Apparently, it is quite uncommon for people to suddenly sit upright as though noting happened. Maybe your characters are shocked by this, as they expected their friend to just be 'fine' straight away...
CPR can also have quite a few side effects (CPR Select)
For example, our whumpee is most definitely going to have bruised, cracked or broken ribs.
Your whumpee could aspirate, causing aspiration pneumonia (mild emetophobia tw) (Penn Medicine)
And finally, your whumpee could suffer some form of damage from hypoxia - where their brain is starved of oxygen. Maybe those who administered the CPR feel intense guilt, as instead of being dead, the whumpee may have a lower quality of life/suffer through the consequences and rehab.

Whumptober #25
Trope of the day: “They’re not breathing!”
_
When caretaker finally arrives at the scene, it's even worse than they expected it to be. Too many are injured, one looks worse than the other. They don't even have the time to catch their breath as team mate runs up and grabs their arm to pull them with them.
"Wh-what are you doing?", caretaker says after finally finding their voice, the shock slowly leaving their system so they can think clearly again.
“They’re not breathing,” team mate rasps and tries to get them to quicken their pace, but caretaker finally snaps back into reality and hurries forward.
Another team mate sits beside whumpee's lifeless body, doing cpr as good as they can, sobs shaking their body every few seconds. “They’re not breathing,” they call out, and caretaker softly pushes them away to try their best and get whumpee back.
Their hands are experienced, a steady rhythm that cracks some of the ribs of the cold body beneath them. A steady rhythm that helps caretaker not lose their mind.
