ok i was honestly shocked when i found out arturo’s secret, i thought it was levi’s secret so kudos to the drdt creators for that! but i have a gut feeling that there’s a lot more to his backstory than “he bullied his sister” because we’ve already seen a similar thing handled with arei, so i feel like if they did the same thing for arturo it would just be kind of recycled. in my opinion, arturo’s sister is not completely innocent in this situation. my theory is that arturo’s sister abused him in some way, how exactly i’m not sure, but there is one character in the canon danganronpa franchise who is weirdly similar to arturo.

I’m talking about korekiyo shinguji of course. they both wear masks, are considered “weird”, and have an obsession with beautiful things. this could definitely just be a coincidence, or that arturo was somewhat based off of korekiyo, but it’s been on my mind for sometime. it’s definitely possible that he was sexually assaulted in some way similar to korekiyo.

also, eden bringing up his secret did definitely bring up some awful memories. saying stuff like “it’s not my fault” and even going as far as to threaten her with a scalpel.

i could absolutely be wrong here though. this is all just based on speculation, so take my theory with a whole salt mine here. and lmk if i got anything wrong or if you have a different opinion in the comments!

some korekiyo backstory headcanons / info below the cut:

massive tws for child abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, inc*st, etc. 

due to a pattern of abuse korekiyo suffered at the hands of his sister and other family members, they developed dissociative identity disorder, which led to their sister taking on a role as a persecutory/interject alter. they had a few other alters as well, but they’ve since been working through therapy to integrate these alters.

korekiyo’s mother died during childbirth, and their sister was 11 at the time of their birth.

their father was often travelling, therefore leaving them home alone with each other when miyadera turned 13, believing they were capable of taking care of themselves.

they were homeschooled due to the frequent travels of their family, and the fear that with low immune systems running in the family, the children would get sick.

miyadera falls ill with the same ailment of their mother when korekiyo turns 5, and she turns 16. age 6 and 17 respectively is where a lot of the grooming begins, as miyadera tries to shape them into exactly what she wants them to be (specifically what she’s always wanted as a friend and partner).

korekiyo’s father doesn’t return from one of his trips when the siblings are 8 and 19 respectively. miyadera, despite her illness, takes on the role of head of the household and expects 8 year old korekiyo to take care of her.

miyadera’s abuse began with emotional abuse, often calling korekiyo useless, annoying, etc. when they weren’t behaving in a way that pleased her, and then moving on to physical and then sexual abuse when korekiyo turned 12-13.

they went to therapy at age 16, a year after their sister died (when she was 26). they realized to be able to successfully go about their studies, they needed more than just themselves. it took a while to get the help they needed, but they eventually went and it has helped immensely.

this being said, their trauma isn’t something that heals fast. obviously, they had to relearn a lot about love and relationships, and who they truly are. despite this being incredibly hard, they work very diligently to succeed.

hypersexuality is a coping mechanism for them, note that it is not inherently positive or negative, it simply is the way they went about dealing with their se/xual abuse. they often feel inclined to start physical relationships and end up feeling very guilty after.

his backstory just SCREAMS of isolation, being guilt tripped into sticking close out of filial obligation, that spiraled into something disgusting.

his sister right? hospitalized? no friends? idk what her deal is really, idc but she kept kork close, made him a uniform tailored to him (dressing him up the way she likes) and kork is therefore feeling indebted to his older sister for all that she's done for him, even supporting him in his passion for anthropology

he was most likely gaslit, in denial over what's happening, because that's his sister and kork was probably avoided too for his mannerisms so he himself didnt have someone he can trust to tell him something was wrong.

its those kinds of they care for each other but even then, sometimes even if you care about them, that doesn't mean they're good for you, sort of way?

THREE. i dont think kork became a serial killer out of choice but more of, the seed was planted into his head. his sister probably talked about wanting to be with other pretty girls, wishing so much for it, probably even mentioning violence considering it was clear she's staying there long term

kork, whose getting into anthropology, shared it with his sister and somehow, they ended up reaching the topic of diff culture's afterlife, just a few flippant comics of, "ah, if there was an afterlife, maybe ill have friends there."

and it just. bloomed, along with the hallucination that kork forms because he's alone now, traveling alone, always staying too short to make any deep connections that he inevitably breaks because of lack of support system.

FOUR. the incest thing, yeah i scrapped that whole thing, kork loved his sister but not in that way, i like to think he meant he loved his sister as in to the point where he'd kill for her, something society wouldn't agree with but not bc their relationship was like that OTL i dont know, it just felt like, an added point to make it more horrifying? it doesn't add much to the story so i won't be putting it in mine

Tw: slight mention of Kiyo’s backstory

(It’s not rlly there it’s just mentions of nightmares and such)

Shuichi can carry both Kiyo and Kiibo because he’s big strong. Kiyo doesn’t know this and neither does Kiibo until Shuichi suddenly picks up Kiyo bridal style. Who’s immediately like “fdhfhdhfg w-what are you doing how??” Cause he’s very tall and hasn’t been lifted since that one time with Gonta. Then he puts Kiyo down and lifts up Kiibo who’s like “hfhghfv i- I- I- 😳😳😳”

They both are very impressed by Shuichi’s strength and they like to flaunt Shuichi’s strength. “Wow look at our big strong bf isn’t he gorgeous”

Sometimes they’ll watch movies late at night and all snuggle on the couch. Kiyo falls asleep like 99% of the time. He finds it very difficult to stay awake especially since he wakes up at like 6 in the morning. Kiibo and Shuichi just lay on them though. Sometimes Kiyo will sprawl out across both their laps like a big cat.

Kiibo has acrylics. Those very long nails. They like to surprise their partners and run their long nails up their spines. Kiyo usually squeals and spins around while Shuichi will flinch and turn around. Kiibo finds it very funny to harass their poor partners.

Kiyo will occasionally take their mask off and let one of their partners wear it. It’s usually if one of them are sad or anxious. He also gives many many kisses and leaves lipstick marks. Kiibo gets very very flustered at this. It’s not something Kiyo would do under any other circumstances as he’s a bit awkward will initiating physical contact but when he can tell one of their beauties of humanity is upset he just has to do something.

Kiibo likes to wrap kiyos bandages for them. They find it calming and they’re both usually awake before Shuichi so they might as well. It’s difficult for Kiyo to do so by themselves anyways.

They visit miu quite often to make sure kiibos doing alright and upgrade any of their functions.

Kiibo or Shuichi will cook. Sometimes they’ll cook together. Kiyo cleans a lot and he’s pretty good at it. He also makes them all tea in the mornings. Since he’s usually up before Shu he’ll make him tea for later and put it on the counter waiting to be heated up.

They all live together. They have their separate places for studying and they have a separate room with a bed in case someone wants to sleep alone but they’re often sleeping together.

Kiibo and Shuichi will sometimes try to style kiyos hair in various ways like curling it, braiding it, pigtails, Miku style, bows, clips, and even more. Kiyo finds it funny that they’d want to style their hair so much but he does enjoy it.

If you even think about harming or judging Shuichi or Kiibo then you have a storm coming. Kiyo will stare you daggers. He is very overprotective of their partners and will not let harm come their way.

Shuichi and Kiibo both know about Kiyo’s past. Sometimes Kiyo will have nightmares or spend hours reliving things. Shuichi and Kiibo will stay with them and try to provide them with the most comfort possible. Usually cuddles and reassurance will help. He usually won’t wanna talk about it. It just helps not to be alone.

Kiyo will very randomly put on slow dance music and force on of their partners to dance with them in the kitchen. Usually when they’re cooking. He gets bored of waiting

So, has no one else thought that Korekiyo got to Rantaro’s sisters before he could fine them? Is this original content?

Like, how has Rantaro not found a single sister in all this time? And like, I’m pretty sure Korekiyo strictly kills girls for his sister so for all we he could’ve gotten one of them in his travels for his job. And I’m 99.9% sure that he would find “worthy” girls (whatever that means, all we know is that it’s not Miu or Maki) in different countries, and some could be ethnically Japanese but not be in Japan. Plus I’m pretty sure Tenko would’ve been disposed of if Korekiyo didn’t have 3 other people in the room to watch him take her body and dispose of it properly, so that could account for why no bodies were found.

I dunno mates, I just randomly thought about this one day and wanted to share. Maybe I’ll expand on it another day if any of y’all like this.

Okay so I googled it and apparently Season 2 hasn't been confirmed but there is plenty of material from the manga available to make a sequel. If anyone has any other information, I would LOVE for someone to reply to this with that info.

REVIEW TIME!

Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is an anime about a ghost named Hanako-Kun, who haunts the school bathroom, being summoned by Nene Yashiro, a girl who dreams of having a boyfriend to love her for who she is. Despite how weird and crackhead-sounding the title and storyline are, the show has an amazing plot and incredible characters. Definitely high up on my list of animes I love. Overall, I have to rate Season 1 a definite 8/10. The show is awesome, but I despise the fact that all the characters keep making fun of Nene's legs as if a woman is supposed to have every single feature of her body be perfect. I feel like it would've made more sense if you had people make fun of her boobs or something rather than her ankles because for her boobs to be kinda underdeveloped in high school would be a definite target for bullying rather than a feature as random as her ankles. I am definitely a Hananene shipper, and possibly a Mitsukou shipper. I still wanna know WHY Hanako killed Tsukasa, and if my s3xu@l @$$ault theory was right or not. I can't wait for Season 2 to come out, and I hope they continue to have the show be the masterpiece it is.

okay so just finished trial 3 and the execution and i have some thoughts

(tw for various forms of abuse)

the way his sister was acting during the trial was very controlling:

“you must not lose composure, don’t fluster, don’t waver”

and from the backstory, i came to the conclusion that she was abusive, she emotionally manipulated and groomed kiyo and used her sickness to manipulate him. He said she was his older sister too, so there’s also a power imbalance.

She also guilt tripped him, like how she never got a chance to make any friends so he felt compelled to kill for her, and he never thought it was enough

And, what hurts is he never got a chance to heal too. He died thinking what he did wasn’t enough, that all he did was never enough for her.

Long story short, I still like Korekiyo, he is an interesting character, and he is still my favorite. I’m very sad he died, but of course all of this doesn’t excuse what he did to Tenko and Angie, there’s no excuse for that and his past actions of killing others.

I never thought that some day I was going to see someone more fucked that Korekiyo "I dated my own sister and I killed almost 100 girls to make them my sister's friends" Shinguji, but in that moment came Kanade and her "I'm gonna kill all my sister's friends to break her to the point I can control her to make all I want her to do" mentality

I saw once a venn diagram that was like Korekiyo on one side, Mikan (i interpreted as the game chapter 3 Mikan) on the other side, and in the middle it was Kanade, and i was like. Truest take.

I also think that Linuj hit the right chord in drawing all the horror of Kanade and what she did to Hibiki, and just all the atmosphere of the trial is super chilling and horrifying. And her trial added neat developments to the story (Kanade broke the illusion that only Voids would be killers, basically making everyone, void or not, more paranoid and distrustful) and the trial felt very... i am struggling with a word here, but consistent? it felt the build up was done nicely, and everyone was kept consistent with the previously given information. Kanade "third case breakdown" was also the one that i felt was more earned and consistent (ie its previously estabilished that she does want to get out, only when people approach the true layer of her plan, she snaps. Only when really unpredictable things like Sora "Sudden" Insight happen, she snaps. and What TRULY makes her breakdown is when SHE, a perfectionist, makes a mistake (that we the audience know the cause, ie Divine Luck))

I also think that what Kanade did hit far harder, since Hibiki was a character in game, and thus we got more information on Hibiki, and saw her growing development in real time, (as well as hints that Kanade was not what she seemed, with her sharp intelligence, oddly calm in the face of blood/trials, and odd pauses) so when we find what happened it hits vastly harder than.... a spirit.. who may not even be a spirit....whose story we know jackshit about... and who gives conflicting information on what their backstory is... and whose plan was just so "??????"

And then Kanade goes even further in describing their past and how exactly she started and what she did and how she escalated. And just.... chills... it was truly horrifying.

Summary: Kanade looked at the canon third cases and went "Hold my beer, Amateurs". To everyone collective horror.

Okay okay okay this took a while & I'm sorry but here are my Hot Takes, some of which are spicier than others. Spoiler warning btw, and a lot of this is negative!! I’d like to TW for y’know, the general DR things (death, blood, etc.,), but also I go over Kiyo’s deal a little bit-- described more in passing than in detail, so read at your own discretion!!

I have a couple more Spicy Hot Takes if anyone wants ‘em but for now take these!!

Hot Take #1: It kinda sucked compared to the other 3 games in the franchise! It wasn’t a bad game, but like. Idk. The other games were all much better, imo??

The story’s execution after Chapter 1 was bad. It was like they only planned that far, had everything riding on that, and from there, they were like “eh just do whatever I guess.” The Prologue was an excellent way to start off, with everyone’s “pregame” selves all gathered in a room. It’s the only thing that alluded to the end twist and did it well. Kaede’s whole deal with being the murderer, being an unreliable narrator, was very expertly crafted and written so well! I can’t begin to tell you how much I admire the writing there.

Kirumi’s execution was lazy (while every other character got an execution inspired by their talents, Kirumi’s was, “she couldn’t get away whoops”), then there was Korekiyo’s whole deal (I’m gonna get into that in a minute because I’m so mad about what they did to him), all of Chapter 4 was cheap and a cop out (Gonta didn’t deserve to die! I don’t mean in the way that Kokichi masterminded the whole thing and blah blah blah I already know that’s not grounds for saving him from execution, but he didn’t know or remember that he did it. He wasn’t blackened. His avatar was, but Gonta irl? Didn’t actually do anything), and I dunno, Chapter 5 was okay. I didn’t really contribute much to the overall plot, but it was a decent chapter that made enough sense. I think that Kiibo’s sacrifice was a bad way to leave the story! What other Ultimate Hope died? (Nagito calling himself the “Ultimate Hope” doesn’t count.) The Tsumugi/Junko thing was stupid, too. Like. Don’t force Junko in with another character. Plus Tsumugi’s “I’m so plain :((” thing made it really obvious that she was the mastermind, imo.

Hot Take #2: Korekiyo didn’t deserve any of what he got! Fuck!!!! This one is very personal, but Kiyo’s autistic, like very clearly. I wasn’t diagnosed at the time I played, but he wears clothes over every part of his body, he has strange body language, he doesn’t really bond with anyone in the game and is kind of a loner, and the only thing he ever talks about is anthropology, his special interest. I saw all of these traits in him, and they were all traits I saw in myself! And I was so comforted that basically the other characters went “ah he’s weird, but that’s just Kiyo I guess” only for the game to turn around and make him out to be a violent, misogynistic murderer creep incestuous assfuck. What the hell. What the fuck? Like. I dunno. It’s Danganronpa, he coulda been a killer all he wanted! That’s how things be in this high-stakes game of life and death, of hope and despair. But for that to be his backstory, his plot twist? What the fuck?! He deserved so much better. Fuck. (And so did Tenko and so did Angie, by extension.)

Was Korekiyo Shinguji Innocent?

!tw: lots of abuse topics !!This is very long but there’s a TLDR at the bottom !!!Danganronpa spoilers ahead for V3 (obviously)

Cough oh shit look at that, discourse which no one cares about because I’m irrelevant.

No but seriously, I want to make this perfectly clear before I begin, I am writing this while throwing away my biases and being as open-minded as I always try to be. This is going to be an incredibly long post about what people think about Korekiyo Shinguji, and that reasons for disliking him isn’t as shallow as just disapproving of the actions he took in the game. If you’re interested about what I have to say, click keep reading, if you just want a shorter version of what I meant there’s a TLDR at the bottom.

Oh wow you actually clicked it? Wait, wait, gotta keep this professional. So I’ll be splitting the topics around Korekiyo as; Storyline, Character Design and Personality, Fandom’s Backstory Headcanons, The “Main Problem”, and a Conclusion. Remember, you don’t have to read all of it, there’s still a TLDR at the bottom, but thanks for giving this a chance!

Danganronpa V3 Storyline

We are all aware at this point at what happened in V3 regarding Shingucci, and if you aren’t aware, then why are you reading this-

Throughout the first chapter Korekiyo is mostly just neutral and calm throughout everything, but still a little creepy with a few off hand comments about the beauty of humanity. Similar events happen in Chapter 2, calm, not really bothered by his fellow Ultimates no matter how bizarre some of them are. Rather helpful in the trial but still annoyed by Himiko’s insistence on genuine magic and continues to theorise how she could be the culprit, but was still mostly the same even after seeing Kirumi’s undignified exit and execution at the end of the trial. Chapter 3 rolls around and Angie decides to try and resurrect one of our fallen Ultimates, Kiyo decides to hold a seance to communicate with one of the lost spirits as well, but of course this is just a murder plan in disguise to send his sister more “friends”. Angie accidentally walks in on Kiyo mid-saw-cutting and to make sure she couldn’t tell anyone about his plans later on, he hits her over the head then brings her to her own lab, ends her life, and sets up a lock mechanism to lock the lab with the corpse in it.

He continues his seance plan due to ‘not wanting it to go to waste’, and says the next day they should use it to contact Angie. More stuff happens and Kiyo’s pleased with Tenko being such a good candinate to be his sister’s friend, and proceeds to kill her with the plan he originally set up. (While also setting it up so he could almost perfectly pin it on Himiko.) During the trial he’s as composed as ever but as more clues show him towards him being the culprit to both of the murders, he becomes increasingly more erratic, and the tulpa split personality of his sister appearing to calm him, but he eventually admits to being the culprit. After the trial he confesses his reasoning, the incestuous relationship with his older sister who he swore to send 100 (female) friends to after her sickly passing. Obviously, people were going to be disgusted by the incestuous relationship he had with his older sister, but that’s not always the reason people are going to dislike him in the story. 

Korekiyo obviously hadn’t done much in the first two chapters aside from being helpful in the trials, and people don’t particularly like it when characters they like are killed, in Chapter 3 that concerns Angie, Tenko, and Kiyo. Angie was increasingly infuriating towards her demise, with the Student Council and the actions she took for what she wanted with the school, but was still an enjoyable character with her cheery attitude and honestly good intentions. Tenko both is and isn’t quite popular, with her resentment of men (which I won’t get into because that’s another topic entirely) gaining her hate, but her good intentions and wishes for friendship making her a likeable character. Kiyo hadn’t done much to establish his character side from being creepy, calm, and neutral, which doesn’t put much towards liking him if there’s no reason to, that isn’t to say there’s a reason to dislike him, just that there’s not enough events to show him in a highly positive light.

Character Design & Personality

To be perfectly fair, Kiyo’s final design was pretty well made in terms of appearance. By Kodaka taking a combination of multiple sorts of imagery, including underground culture, anthropology, and visual style, made him pleasing to look at aesthetically and in terms of genuine character. People can dislike him but still see his positive points essentially, at least design wise.

His personality is essentially what was previously mentioned, neutral, calm, creepy sometimes, and that’s essentially it. During the third trial he quickly became panicky when it was becoming obvious he had killed both Angie and Tenko (side note: it was extremely obvious he had killed Tenko from the start, Angie was the difficult one) but was calmed down by the ghost of his sister, also claiming he was deeply in love with her with what seemed to be genuine sincerity. There is also the fact that Kiyo felt no guilt for killing all those women to send to his sister, and seemed to consider everyone in the academy his “friends”, indicating he’s unable to understand or care about what other people feel. In the end he finally accepts his defeat and is executed by Monokuma and the later appearance of his sister’s spirit, causing his last expression to be disbelief and horror as both of them banish his spirit to the afterlife. The point of this paragraph is that although I understand why people can like his personality, people are allowed to dislike the kind of person he is by finding him boring, maybe a little annoying, selfish for having no regards for what the other characters felt, and it’s fine, because even if people dislike his personality they can still see why people like his personality.

Fandom’s Backstory Headcanons

Of course to start off with, there’s the canonical backstory of Korekiyo that we were given through FTEs and the storyline.  Kiyo had a sickly older sister who almost constantly required to be in the hospital, since she was lonely without friends Kiyo would spend all of his time with her. One day reading a book about Anthropology with his sister who suggested he could research it, motivating him to become an anthropologist. His sister normally picked most things for him, his hair, tailoring his uniform, and so on. According to Korekiyo, he had an incestuous relationship with her, believing it was truly love with no care of what others thought, although at some point his sister died. Left alone and frustrated he swore to kill and send 100 friends to her since she had none in her lifetime, we’re also able to assume he got somewhere close to that number before his death though. (side note: I personally headcanon that Tenko was the 99th “friend”). While travelling he had been captured and tortured by locals, leading him to hallucinate his sister that calmed him down, which also caused him to form a split personality/tulpa.

Since that’s about all the information we were given, of course it left the fandom theorising and wondering about possibilities. There’s the semi-popular headcanon of Kiyo that he was abused by that sister, of course there’s obvious signs of manipulation in their relationship, telling him how to act, dress, talk, what to do and like and so on. The headcanon is also backed up by canon, which essentially does imply he was manipulated and abused by the sister, as he spent so much time with her that she relied on him.

(Personal Experience Ahead, I don’t mind it if you skip) I tried to force myself to like Kiyo. I really did. I thought that with this idea it does explain his actions better than the canon did. But I couldn’t. I was and still am abused by my older sister for a decade now, emotionally/psychologically, verbally, and physically. Now leaving me medically diagnosed with anxiety (social and generalised), depression, and PTSD. While the fandom seems to say Kiyo had been abused psychologically and some add sexually abused. Abuse is a difficult topic to talk about, even bringing it up in this sense has brought back horrible memories from my life, if you do genuine research or know from experience what that abuse like that is like, it’s fine and I wish the best for you. But please do not just slap “abused” on like a label, like it justifies his actions. I said previously it explains it, not justifies. The “Main Problem”

I’m sure some people would be aware this was coming, if you have knowledge of V3′s full game, simply hearing Kiyo’s name will remind you of the third trial.

Korekiyo’s sister. Implied to be abusive, manipulative, constantly sick, dependant on Kiyo, now deceased, and previously in an incestuous relationship with him. The things Kiyo said about her would obviously throw everyone off, incest is quite revolting, so of course people would dislike him after hearing he was in a relationship with his older sister.

But that does not mean it’s the only reason to dislike Korekiyo.

(Intense) Kiyo fans immediately go to hating on and blaming the canon whenever someone says they dislike him, assuming they’re always referring to the sister relationship for their dislike. That is not always going to be the reason. Yes, the presence of the incestuous relationship is problematic if you want people to like Kiyo, but please don’t always assume it’s because of the third chapter. It’s as simple as having an open conversation, not attacking the creators, the character, or the person you’re disagreeing with, then if you can’t reach a conclusion, just agree to disagree and leave it there.

Conclusion I guess

Obviously most of this was just covering what we already knew, but reminding information is normally necessary for things like this. Did I just waste hours of my time writing an essay on a fictional character? Yes. Do I expect everyone to agree? No. Do I mind? No. Was there a reason to make this? Yeah, kinda. I just want to lay it out there that people are entitled to their own opinions, free speech and all that good shit. So people are allowed to decide whether they like Kiyo or not, just don’t hate them or assume and scream that it’s only because of chapter 3 that they dislike him. Everyone can have an opinion, people like Kiyo for their own reasons, people dislike Kiyo for their own reasons, V3 is done and finished. If you’re still unsatisfied you can go ahead and argue with me, I’ll try to stay level headed and hear you out. 

TLDR: People can have opinions. Kiyo stans don’t always assume it’s because of the sister that people dislike Kiyo, you can say he’s underrated or overrated it doesn’t matter either way, just don’t shove it down people’s throats. You’re all entitled to your own opinions and ideas, as long as you can reach a conclusion together that doesn’t end in hate it should be fine.
