Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) - REVIEW

Let's be honest, it felt rather inevitable that Deadpool and Wolverine would come together and it's everything you'd hoped it to be. Anyone worrying about the prospect of a Disney owned Deadpool generally needn't worry as this is every bit as R rated and edgy as the first two movies and likewise goes all out. Does it give the Marvel Cinematic Universe a much needed shot in the arm? Not really for me because it doesn't quite feel like an actual part of the MCU even though it casts aside most of the side characters from Deadpool 1 and 2. This film instead does what Spider-Man: No Way Home did in effectively using the Multiverse phase to do its own thing. Deadpool and Wolverine at the very least is a tribute and final send-off to the Fox era of comic book movies that started with 2000's X-Men.

This still has plenty of fourth wall breaking quips from Ryan Reynold's Deadpool that pokes fun at everything from Hugh Jackman's perfect send-off in Logan, the Disney/Fox merger to even the state of the MCU itself. It never feels like it's ever being held back and is very funny from start to finish and most, if not all, of that comes down to Ryan Reynolds who has unquestionable mastered this role to perfection. But this movie has an added edge thanks to the return of Jackman's Wolverine who likewise has mastered his iconic character over the two decades. Reynolds and Jackman have incredible chemistry together whether they're working together, trading insults or fighting each other. The plot is a bit by the numbers that utilises the multiverse concept for some very fun moments that I won't spoil here but it is those moments that you'll remember rather than the plot. A big shout out should be given to Matthew Macfadyen's hilarious, villainous performance as Mr. Paradox. It's all terrific fun.

VERDICT

Deadpool and Wolverine may not reinvent or save the MCU as such, but it is consistently funny, bloody and a terrific night out at the cinema. What more could you want?

THIS is what made me scream in the theater! When he came onto screen, I literally screamed I was so excited to see BLADE since Trinity in 2004!

Everyone was "Chris Evans this, Johnny Storm that" I say mediocre cameo compared to THE character responsible for making Marvel, X-Men and the MCU a household name.

All the other cameos were great, at least the actors they got to come back. I was rather surprised at some of the actors that weren't brought back. Lady Deathstrike, Toad, Juggernaut, and a few others I can't remember off hand. Just wonder why they couldn't be squeezed in?

I am down for Wesley Snipes in any capacity in the MCU or in some form between now and Secret Wars.

Recently watched: It Happened in Athens (1962). Tagline: “When Jayne decides to rival Helen of Troy … it’s a madcap marathon for Olympic Heroes and Grecian Glory!” I am an obsessive Jayne Mansfield completist and somehow this one had hitherto bypassed me (just discovered there’s a decent print on YouTube). It’s an inconsequential comedy about humble shepherd Spiridon (Trax Colton, resembling a Lil’ Abner cartoon come to life), who aspires to compete as a marathon runner in the 1896 Olympics Games in Athens. As Jayne’s biographer Eve Golden concludes, “It Happened in Athens is a picturesque film – lots of lovely location scenery and Greek dancing – but not terribly interesting.” Certainly, it’s mostly as wholesome and innocuous as a children’s film. Having said that, it’s a lush big budget venture, filmed on location in Athens in CinemaScope and DeLuxe Colour and looks spectacular. Despite her top billing Mansfield is essentially a special guest star. Her memorable “boudoir scene” sashaying around in a tightly cinched corset (pictured) is a highlight. And watch for the sequence where Spiridon ventures into a sleazy tavern. One of the belly dancers in the background (a “local hire”) boasts bushy natural unshaven armpits, something rarely glimpsed in a Hollywood film of the period. Mainly Athens is a “star vehicle” to introduce the buff square-jawed charms of leading man Colton - a male starlet from the stable of Henry Willson (the savvy gay agent who discovered and renamed the likes of Rock Hudson, Guy Madison, Tab Hunter and Troy Donahue) - to the world. Except Colton was immediately dropped by 20th Century Fox afterwards and never made another movie. Jayne’s character vows to marry whichever athlete wins the marathon, which prompts two funny lines. When told Hungary is in the lead, she recoils in distaste (she was still married to Hungarian Mickey Hargitay at this point). When someone enquires “How’s your French?”, she purrs, “I’ve never had any complaints!” anticipating the Elvira joke “How’s your head?” “I’ve never had any complaints.”

This blue vintage Edwardian gown was first seen in a deleted scene from the 1997 film Titanic. Fox Studios (Twentieth Century Studios) used the costume on their website to advertise their wardrobe department. The piece appeared a third time on Alexandra Ella as a party guest in a 2017 Southwest Airlines commercial entitled “Noblest Lady.”

Surprise poll! I won’t check this very often, but I’m trying to decide what tournament to run next. So I am putting out a list of other animation companies next to 1-3 recognizable franchises or movies. The next polls should run sometime during 2024, so keep an eye out :).

REMEMBER: I will only be holding a tournament for movies, not tv shows.
