Bree Tanner deserved better, and not just from a narrative standpoint (although I think it would have been interesting to see how the story changed if she’d remained alive), but in regards to Bella. Bree gets only a handful of paragraphs in Eclipse, but we see Bella describe and empathize with her, even noting that the girl looked young, perhaps only fifteen. And then Bree is dismembered by Felix, and she’s never mentioned again.
Tumblr media
Imagine if Bella had hung onto that little girl, felt remorse and sympathy for her. Bree was, after all, turned and then subsequently killed because of Bella. All of the newborns were. But we don’t hear anything about them, only how they were violent monsters. They were all human once, but the narrative ignores this. Bree was an actual child. If it wasn’t for Bella, and by extension, the Cullens, Bree would have lived a normal life in Seattle.
Bella should have thought about all of this. It should have been in the back of her mind: guilt and sadness and maybe a little self-loathing too. And the continued fear that maybe when she went through the change, she would be that uncontrollable, bloodthirsty creature too.
Tumblr media
But of course, Stephanie Meyer chose to ignore Bella’s trauma per usual, and so we never hear of Bree again; instead we get sappy romance and a vampire-hybrid baby, Bella’s trauma forgotten and never truly addressed. But that’s nothing new here.
Anyway, Bree Tanner deserved better.

For REAL THOUGH I cannot get over how badly Stephenie Meyer needed a decent editor for these books.
On page 316 of Eclipse, Bella says that the next day (Thursday, June 8th) is the FIRST day of finals, and it's a half day. She only has two exams; History and Calc.
ON SAID NEXT DAY while she's at Jake's after her exams in the morning, on page 323, she says Finals are OVER.
In Chapter 12, Alice establishes that it's June 4th (in reality it would be Monday June 5th, 2006-But either way its June)
But in Chapter 14, Bella says it's unseasonably cold and feels "more like February than May"
🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

what makes me actually boil with rage is the way it’s framed as though jacob & the cullens have an even rivalry and like, he hates them just as much as they hate him, but like… jacob is a lower class kid who lives on the rez, the cullens live in a plantation home on private property. jacob calling alice a leech is an insult, but alice calling him a mongrel calls into power and privilege, ya know. like am i supposed to honestly think jake making blonde jokes to rosalie (which is certainly sexist and uncalled for) is on the same level as her serving him food in a dog dish? him seeing the cullens as bloodsuckers and murderers is just like, incorrect and unfair, but them seeing him as uncivilized and over-aggressive has implications deeply rooted in the oppression of his people

Eclipse in Real Time
July 17th, 2006 (Monday)*
This date is entirely speculative. There are no context clues for passage of time. I had originally planned for this post to be for July 1st, but your girl forgot to schedule it. Oop.
Moon Phase: Last Quarter 🌗
🌄 Sunrise: 5:34 AM
🌅 Sunset : 9:12 PM
Eclipse, Epilogue ("Choice")
4:00-4:05 PM (Approx.) - Leah complains to Jacob about how his heartache is affecting the pack; Jacob returns her barbs with comments about how she does the same thing but with Sam; Leah spits at Jacob and leaves
4:06-4:15 PM (Approx.) - Jacob ruminates before deciding to go home and eat
4:20 PM (Approx.) - Jacob enters his kitchen and makes food while Billy makes small talk; Billy finally tells Jake that they got an invitation from the Cullens for Bella and Edward's wedding, and that there is a note inside addressed to Jacob.
4:25 PM (Approx.) - Jacob reads Edward's letter and runs away

it was 2006 when bella and edward went to florida she should've been wearing a crop top and low-rise short shorts to show off her belly button piercing that renee absolutely talked her into getting the summer before she started high school and edward should have been so overwhelmed with lust he'd be practically mute the entire trip.

I think what really drew me in to twilight when I was a teenager is that, despite the epic vampire whirlwind romance, the teenagers actually do feel like they have REAL lives, and it’s a real shame that that doesn’t translate to the movies (bc a movie with pointless scenes of the main character making enchiladas & doing homework would be crazy boring). I like that Edward enjoys skipping class to sit in his car & listen to Linkin Park CDs, I like that Bella spends her weekends doing laundry and drafting her Macbeth essay, and on sunny days she lays out a blanket to read in her backyard. I like that she drives to her best friend’s house after school to watch him fix cars and do homework together, I like that they have joint family dinners that are just eating spaghetti on fold-out chairs on the deck. I like that her friend group piles in mike’s mom’s van to go hang out at the beach, and when she brings a camera to school they all start a “picture war.” I like that she has a part-time retail job and sits at the kitchen table filling out uni applications with her boyfriend. It definitely loses that quality around eclipse when the focus has to stay on the actual plot, but I like that twilight & new moon feel pretty grounded in what introverted lower-middle class small-town teenagers are actually doing.

There was a post a few years ago about the things in Twilight which are actually pretty good - like how a human who has turned into a vampire might keep breathing, just out of habit, yet feel strange because there's no relief tied to the action, or how a group of vampires who don't sleep take it in turns holding a baby as she sleeps.
I'd like to add one to the list: in the final book, Bella says that she loves Edward and her daughter, but her new love for her daughter doesn't diminish her love for Edward, as she previously thought it might. I wonder if this is tied into the author's experiences with motherhood and concerns with jealousy and a baby getting the attention and affection that was previously reserved for a partner. Instead, Bella says she has more capacity to love, and it's quite a sweet passage. She says there's not enough time in the day to adore her daughter; not enough time at night to cherish her husband.
Anyway all of that is undermined by the fact that she named her daughter Renesme
