Newspapers brought the story of Appomattox into people’s homes, using descriptive language that set the scene and gave special attention to the attire of both men. “Gen. [Robert E.] Lee was sitting by the table, dressed in a suit of gray—coat, pants, and vest all of gray,” wearing “an elegant sword,” while Ulysses S. Grant had “left his sword behind,” appearing “in the same suit he had worn in the field through the eventful days—a plain blue frock, with double row of buttons, and shoulder straps bearing the three silver stars—the insignia of his rank as Lieut. General.” The vivid description of these men at this momentous event confirmed the popular opinion of them: Lee was a southern gentleman, and Grant was a no-nonsense soldier. It should come as no surprise. . . that the uniforms. . . were important details in the recounting of the surrender of Lee’s army. Although no photographer documented the exact moment of this historic event, engravings and portraits of the scene in Wilmer McLean’s parlor remain popular to the present, as has the appearance of these two generals. The contrast between the uniforms worn by Lee and Grant has become shorthand for each man’s character, a thumbnail sketch of two sides of the conflict. We know the story of what they wore that day better than we know the story of what they said.

Eddie Redmayne and Wife Hannah Bagshawe Twin at the 2024 Met Gala
The 'Cabaret' actor attended the annual event just days after he received a Tony nomination
By Victoria Edel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe were couple goals at the 2024 Met Gala as they hit the green carpet in coordinating outfits.
“We’re wearing matching outfits!” Redmayne, 42, delightfully told Vogue red carpet hosts Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham on May 6.  “This is by a gentleman called Steve O. Smith, a young designer. He’s had two collections. He’s an extraordinary man and an extraordinary designer.”
Both husband and wife’s looks featured big black blotches on layers of white tulle. Bagshawe’s outfit featured a tea-length dress with a matching sculptural hat, gloves and pointy black boots. Meanwhile, the Fantastic Beasts star’s outfit was a long, tulle blazer with the same black ink-spots, a tie and black oxford shoes.
Redmayne currently stars on Broadway as the Emcee in Cabaret, a role he also played on London’s West End in 2021. On April 30, Redmayne received a Tony nomination for the part.
“I just saw you live,” Graham, 36, told the actor Monday night. “I was in the front row, and I have to say your character, you embody that character!”
“I hope I wasn’t too lascivious,” Redmayne joked. Of the show, which is set in Germany in 1929, he said, “We’re having the most amazing time. The show is in the round. When you come from 52nd Street, you step into this whole world of the Weimar Republic. The audience is so electric.”
'Sleeping Beauties': The 2024 Met Gala Theme Explained — and How Stars Will Interpret the Dress Code
He also praised his costar, Gayle Rankin, who received a Tony nomination as well.
Redmayne also teased his upcoming TV series, The Day of the Jackal, adding that he’s “playing an assassin who wears quote debonaire suits — probably not tulle skirts!”
Redmayne previously wore one of Smith’s designs for Cabaret’s Broadway opening night earlier this spring. The Oscar winner is also Tony-nominated as one of the show’s producers, and previously won a Tony in 2010 for the play Red.
Redmayne and Bagshawe, 41, have been married since 2014. They share two children, daughter Iris, 7 1/2, and son Luke, 6. The couple have attended the Met Gala together many times, including the 2023 event.

The Met Gala was a rare night off for Redmayne, who performs in Cabaret eight times a week.
"You live like a monk," he explained of the intense Broadway schedule during the April 25 episode of  Live with Kelly and Mark.  "It’s sort of this odd thing where you’re inviting audiences to come and have a hedonistic, sort of all-consuming evening and yet, you are only drinking water, not speaking, all that stuff."
Tumblr media
"The role itself is quite a workout, but I have this brilliant man called Greg who is sort of this icon on Broadway in that he is the man who keeps people upright," the Good Nurse actor explained. "I go and see him, I saw him last night. He’s a masseuse. But as much as I love him, and I have great respect for you Greg, he’s horrendous. It’s absolute agony. It’s that sort of thing where you think the pain, it must be doing something, right?"
"I was telling this to Greg last night, he was like, ‘Eddie, your body, it’s broken.’ And it makes you feel so heroic," he added. "‘Yeah, I’m the toughest Emcee in the world!’ " Redmayne’s production is the fifth Broadway production of Cabaret. Most recently, Alan Cumming played the Emcee in both the 1998 and 2014 revivals.

A terrific review of Young Royals Season 2 in The Sophian.
The Sophian is the student newspaper of Smith College in Northampton, MA, USA. I don't know how long college newspapers keep their archives up, so just in case, I copy-pasted the article below. But assuming the link above works (and it worked just fine right now), please go to the link, don't read my copy-paste.
All Things Real: a Review of “Young Royals” Season Two
BY CATE CHRISTINIDIS ON NOVEMBER 15, 2022 |
ARTS AND CULTURE, POP CULTURE, REVIEWS AND TV

Tumblr media
Hillerska: a private boarding school tucked away in Sweden; horseback riding, rowing, rowdy parties and, most notably, 16-year-old Crown Prince Wilhelm. Still, “Young Royals” (2022) is no fairytale. A simmering pot of angst, romance, betrayal and battles of the conscience, “Young Royals” displays unadulterated teenage reality. Season One ended with Hillerska’s most scandalous term to date, and Wilhelm, played by Edvin Ryding, reluctantly left it behind to the promising tune of Elias’ “Revolution.” In the rubble of Season One, audiences couldn’t help but wonder: would Season Two be that revolution?
The short answer is yes. The romance that blossoms between openly gay Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg) and closeted Crown Prince Wilhelm enters uncharted territory. Wilhelm’s self-discovery is thwarted by the looming sense of duty pressed upon him by Sweden’s royal court, who deem queerness as a threat to the monarchy. Yet, the essence of the story does not lie in Wilhelm’s royal title, but in the title of the show itself: “Young Royals.” It is easy to forget, and equally important to remember, that the students of Hillerska are just kids. Their mistakes are children’s mistakes, and their resilience and bravery are monumental.
This also means that every catastrophe is that much more devastating. Both seasons deal with a case of child pornography –– a cellphone video of Simon and Wilhelm, recorded through Wilhelm’s dormroom window. Regardless of social power, money or fame, the problems that overwhelm Wilhelm and Simon’s relationship are unmistakably larger than they are.
“Young Royals” is all things real –– the bodies and situations portrayed on screen all reflect some semblance of teenage existence; simultaneous chaos, uncertainty, imperfection and beauty. The series doesn’t shy away from the ugly side of teenage life: where partying and stress meet drug use and where jealousy leads to impulsive, criminalizing mistakes. “Young Royals” is both dark and refreshing, unusual in its ability to look life right in the face.
The American media tends to place a beauty filter over the formative years. Audiences lapse into patterns of falsified viewing, scarcely aware enough to ask themselves: Hey, aren’t teenagers supposed to have acne? “Young Royals” doesn’t blink twice at these “blemishes” –– acne, crooked teeth, etc. In fact, they are clearly embraced, normalized and desirable –– clear skin and perfect teeth are not deal-breakers for being the most popular girl in school or the Crown Prince.
“Young Royals” likewise considers the psychological realities faced in the war between authenticity and duty. Season one introduced Wilhelm’s struggle with anxiety, but Season Two pursues the extent to which anxiety and panic consume Wilhelm after Season One’s events. It may sound cliché –– the prince who can’t handle the pressure of the crown –– but Wilhelm doesn’t ask the audience to feel sorry for him, and neither does “Young Royals.” Wilhelm is much messier in Season Two. He explodes with emotion –– fear, pain, anger, guilt and sadness –– and, without Simon, there is nowhere for it to go. He is selfish, rude, depressed, spoiled and makes bad choices. But Wilhelm’s reasons for not wanting to be Crown Prince are rightfully selfish; at 16, he is resigning himself to an empty and dishonest life. Forced by his mother, the Queen, Wilhelm begrudgingly sees a therapist, and while he resents the need for it, Season Two’s “revolution” finds Wilhelm overcoming his personal barriers to enact change.
Wilhelm and Simon are separated by class more than anything. Wilhelm, as a member of the royal family, is an elite, while Simon, a non-boarder, can’t afford to live at the school. While Wilhelm tries to understand Simon (and vice versa), there are times when their differences speak louder than they do. Simon’s inability to understand why Wilhelm, as Crown Prince, can’t disregard the crown and take a stand, clashes with Wilhelm’s inability to see how Simon’s social status caused him to receive the brunt of the backlash for the sextape. Season Two is a testament to revisions and the rightings of wrongs; as Wilhelm works through his own emotions, he learns to use his power and status for progress.
Season Two of “Young Royals” is all about decisions; specifically, revising and listening to one’s conscience to make the right one. Which decision will start a revolution, which will fuel it, which will kill it? Despite the tumultuous path to togetherness, Simon and Wilhelm have an incredibly realistic and healthy relationship. They show love through communication; their need to be seen, heard and understood by each other is unshakable. It makes the moments when they do touch –– which are surprisingly few and far between –– feel all the more worth fighting for. Wilhelm certainly agrees; each season begins and ends with his eyes locked on the camera. This is his story, and he’ll go to war for it.

The Lazarus Experiment
Tumblr media
The Doctor told me he was dropping Martha off, so I decided to stay in my room.
I know for a fact something’s gonna change in the next five minutes.
I was right, because the Doctor opens my door and says, “Change of plans, we’re going to an event, get changed, formal attire.”
He then closes the door.
I nod to myself, going to my bathroom and taking a quick shower before doing my hair and makeup.
I go into my closet, which luckily the Tardis controls.
There’s a pink dress and a pair of white kitten heels, “My favorite pair.”
The Doctor and Martha are waiting for me in the console room.
They turn at my footsteps, both looking awestruck.
“Well, how do I look?” I ask.
“Gorgeous.” Martha smiles.
“Ethereal.” The Doctor grins.
I grin at both of them, “Well, let's go then.” We walk down the street.
The Doctor is fussing with the cuffs of his dress shirt, “Oh, black tie. Whenever I wear this, something bad always happens.” “I think that’s just you.” I laugh, “Besides. It suits you. In a James Bond kinda way.”
“James Bond?” He grins, “Really?”
I giggle as we approach the impressive entrance to Lazarus Laboratories. Inside the main reception room, guests are mingling. Dominating the room is a large white round cabinet surrounded by four pillars with a slight curve at the top.
The Doctor takes some hors-d’oeuvres from a passing tray, “Oh, look, they’ve got nibbles! I love nibbles!” He tosses one whole into his mouth.
Someone I assume Martha knows walks over, “Hello.” “Tish.” The two hug.
“You look great. So, what do you think? Impressive, isn’t it?” Martha nods, “Very.” “And two nights out in a row for you, that’s dangerously close to a social life.” Tish teases.
“You might, actually. Keep an eye out for photographers. And mum, she’s coming too, even dragging Leo along with her.”
Martha looks gobsmacked, “Leo in black tie? That I must see.” Tish glances at me and the Doctor.
“This is the Doctor, and Abby.” Martha introduces.
The Doctor shakes her hand, “Hello.” “Are they with you?” Tish asks.
“Yeah.” “But they’re not on the list, how did they get in?” I smile, linking hands with Martha, “I’m her plus one, and the Doctor is on the list, just under a different name.” She furrows her brow, looking between me and Martha, before it clicks, “Oh! Good for you, Martha.”
“So, do you know what the professor’s going to be doing tonight? That looks like it might be a sonic microfield manipulator.”
“He’s a science geek. I should’ve known. Gotta get back to work now. I’ll catch up with you later.” Tish leaves to mingle.
“Science geek? What does that mean?” He frowns, before realizing that I am holding Martha’s hand, “What’re you doing that for?”
“It means you are obsessively enthusiastic about it. And as for this,” I lift mine and Martha’s hand, “I figured I’m more Martha’s type than you are.” I grin at him.
He nods, frowning slightly.
Someone calls Martha’s name. She turns and looks at the woman as if she hasn’t seen her in years.
“Mum!” She gives her a big hug.
“Oh. all right, what’s the occasion?” Her mother asks.
“What do you mean? I’m just pleased to see you, that’s all.” “You saw me last night.”
“I know. I just… miss you. You’re looking good, Leo.”
“Yeah. if anyone ask me to fetch ‘em a drink, I’ll swing at ‘em.” Martha’s mother seems to notice the Doctor and I.
“You disappeared last night.” “I… just went home.” “On your own?”
I smile, wrapping an arm around Martha’s waist, “Hello, you must be Martha’s mom. I’m Abby, and this is Doctor John Smith.”
“How’d you know Martha?” Her mother asks.
“Well, this is our third date, and her and John are doing some work together.”
“Date?” Her mother’s eyebrows raise.
Our conversation is cut short, as there is a tapping on glass.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I am Professor Richard Lazarus and tonight I’m going to perform a miracle. It is, I believe, the most important advance since Rutherford split the atom, the biggest leap since Armstrong stood on the moon. Tonight, you will watch and wonder. Tomorrow, you’ll awake to a world which will be changed forever.” Lazarus enters the cabinet.
Two technicians start the machinery from a bank of instruments behind the cabinet. There is a high-pitched whir and a bright blue light as the four pillars begin to spin individually creating an energy field. They then begin to rotate around the cabinet, going faster and faster. A warning klaxon goes off.
“Something’s wrong. It’s overloading.”
The technicians try to stop it, but some of the panels explode, sending off sparks. The Doctor jumps over the low desk and aims his sonic screwdriver at the controls.
“Somebody stop him! Get him away from those controls!” “If this thing goes off, it’ll take the whole building with it. Is that what you want?” The Doctor pulls one of the main wires that connect to the cabinet and it slowly stops spinning.
Martha and I run to the door.
“Get it open!”
We open the door and watch, as through the smoke, Lazarus emerges looking 40 years younger. Photographers snap away as we look on amazed.
Lazarus touches his face, realizing it worked. He steps completely out and stands before his machine, “Ladies and gentlemen, I am Richard Lazarus. I am 76 years old and I am reborn!” He holds his arms up in triumph as everyone claps.
People take the opportunity to have their photos taken with Lazarus.
Martha and I watch the Doctor study the machine. “It can’t be the same guy. It’s impossible. It must be a trick.” Martha says. “Oh, it’s not a trick. I wish it were.”
“What just happened, then?” I ask.
“He just changed what it means to be human.”
We walk up just as Richard starts shoveling food into his mouth.
“Richard!” Lady Thaw chastises.
“I’m famished.”
“Energy deficient. Always happens with this kind of process.” The Doctor says.
“You speak as if you see this every day, Mr…” “Doctor. And, well, no, not every day, but I have some experience in this kind of transformation.”
“That’s not possible.”
“Using hypersonic sound waves to create a state of resonance. That’s… that’s inspired.” “You understand the theory, then.” “Enough to know you couldn’t possibly have allowed for all the variables.”
“No experiment is entirely without risk.” “That thing nearly exploded. You might as well have stepped into a blender.” “You’re not qualified to comment.”
“If I hadn’t of stopped it, it would’ve exploded.”
“Then I thank you, Doctor. But that’s a simple engineering issue. What happened inside the capsule was exactly what was supposed to happen. No more, no less.”
“You’ve got no way of knowing that until you’ve run the proper tests.” I tell him.
Lazarus laughs, “Look at me! You can see what happened. I’m all the proof you need.” “This device will be properly certified before we start to operate commercially.” Lady Thaw smiles.
“Commercially?! You are joking. That’ll cause chaos.” Martha laughs.
“Not chaos. Change. A chance for humanity to evolve, to improve.” “This isn’t about improving. It’s about you and your customers living a little longer.” “Not a little longer, Doctor. A lot longer. Perhaps indefinitely.”
“Richard, we have things to discuss. Upstairs.” Lady Thaw walks away.
Lazarus goes to follow her, “Goodbye, Doctor. In a few years, you’ll look back and laugh at how wrong you are.” He reaches out and takes Martha’s hand, kissing the back of it before leaving.
“Ooh, he’s out of his depth. No idea of the damage he might have done.” The Doctor groans.
“So, what do we do now?” I ask.
“Now… well, this building must be full of laboratories. I say we do our own tests.” Martha looks at her hand, “Lucky I’ve just collected a DNA sample then, isn’t it?” “Oh, Martha Jones, you’re a star.”
We end up in an empty lab, looking at the results of the DNA test on a computer screen.
“Amazing.” “What?” I ask.
“Lazarus’s DNA.” “I can’t see anything different.” Martha says.
“Look at it!” The image on the screen flickers.
“Oh, my god! Did that just change? But it can’t have!” I gasp. “But it did.”
“It’s impossible.” “And that’s two impossible things we’ve seen tonight. Don’t you love it when that happens?”
“That means Lazarus has changed his own molecular patterns.” Martha says. “Hypersonic sound waves to destabilize the cell structure then a mutagenic program to manipulate the coding in the protein strands. Basically, he hacked into his own genes and instructed them to rejuvenate.” He explains. “But they’re still mutating now.” I realize.
“‘Cause he missed something. Something in his DNA has been activated and won’t let him stabilize. Something that’s trying to change him.” “Change him into what?” I ask. “I dunno, but I think we need to find out.” “That woman said they were going upstairs.”
“Let’s go!”
We step out of the lift and into Lazarus’s office. The Doctor turns on the lights.
“This is his office, all right.” I say. “So, where is he?” The Doctor asks.
“Dunno. Let’s try back at the re…ception.” Sticking out from behind the desk, I spot a pair of skeletal bones, wearing high heels. We rush over to see the desiccated remains of a woman.
“Is that Lady Thaw?” Martha asks. “Used to be. Now it’s just a shell. Had all the life energy drained out. Like squeezing the juice out of an orange.”
“Lazarus.” “Could be.” “So he’s changed already?” I ask. “Not necessarily. You saw the DNA. it was fluctuating. The process must demand energy. This might not have been enough.” “So he might do this again?” Martha asks.
“Hmm.”
We dash back to the lifts.
We arrive back at reception.
“I can’t see him.” “He can’t be far. Keep looking.” The Doctor walks off. “Hey, you all right, Martha? I think mum wants to talk to you.” “Have you seen Lazarus anywhere?” Martha asks.
“Yeah. He was getting cozy with Tish a couple of minutes ago.” The Doctor joins us moments later. “With Tish?!” “Ah, Abby.” “Where did they go?” “Upstairs I think, why?”
“Abby…” The Doctor rushes past, spilling her drink.
I look at her apologetically, “Sorry.” I pass her a napkin before running after him.
We arrive back at Lazarus’s office. “Where are they?” The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver, “Fluctuating DNA will give off an energy signature. I might be able to pick it up.” he holds his sonic out at arm’s length and slowly turns in a circle. Its beeping increases.
“Got him.” “Where?”
He points at the ceiling. “But this is the top floor! The roof!”
We run for the stairs.
“‘Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act…” “Falls the shadow.’”
Lazarus turns to see us.
“So the mysterious Doctor knows his Eliot. I’m impressed.” “Martha, what are you doing here?”
“Tish, get away from him.” “What? Don’t tell me what to do.” “I wouldn’t have thought you had time for poetry, Lazarus, what with you being busy defying the laws of nature and all.” “You’re right, Doctor. One lifetime’s been too short for me to do everything I’d like. How much more would I get done in two or three or four?”
“Doesn’t work like that.” I shake my head, “Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It’s not the time that matters; it’s the person.” “But if it’s the right person, what a gift that would be.”
“Or what a curse. Look at what you’ve done to yourself.”
“Who are you to judge me?”
“Tish, come here.” I ask. She walks over to us, “You have to spoil everything, don’t you? Every time I find someone nice, you have to go and find a fault.” “Tish, he’s a monster!” Martha says. “I know the age thing’s a bit freaky, but it works for Catherine Zeta-Jones.”
At the sound of growling, Tish slowly turns her head and we all see Lazarus.
He looks like a cross between a human skeleton and a scorpion. He rears up.
“Run!”
We all race inside and the Doctor seals the lock with his sonic screwdriver. Martha presses the call button for the lift, “You okay?” “I was gonna snog him.”
Sirens begin to go off and a computerized warning comes over the PA.
“What’s happening?” I ask. “Uh, an intrusion. It triggers a security lockdown. Kills most of the power. Stops the lifts. Seals the exits.” “Great, he must be breaking through the door. Now, stairs anyone?” We all run down the stairs.
There’s a crashing noise, “He’s inside!”
“Haven’t got much time!”
We enter the reception.
“Tish! Is there another way out of here?”
“There’s an exit in the corner, but it’ll be locked now.”
The Doctor tosses his sonic to me, “Setting 54. Hurry.”
I rush off, followed by Martha and Tish.
Glass shatters and Lazarus appears on the landing above before leaping down to the reception floor.
I open the door just as everyone runs for the exits.
“Over here! This way! Everyone downstairs now! Hurry!” We run over to Leo.
“Martha.” “C’mon, stay with me.” Martha and I take her mother and Leo to safety.
“What’s the Doctor doing?” Tish asks.
“He’s buying us time.” I say. Martha examines her brother, “Leo, look at me. Let me see your eyes.” She speak to her mother, “He’s got a concussion, you’ll need to help him downstairs.” She goes to an ice bucket and puts some ice in a napkin, which she then gives to her mother, “This’ll keep the swelling down. Go! I’ll be right behind you! Tish, move! We need to get out of here!”
The partygoers are running down the stairs to the main entrance but the doors are locked.
“We can’t get out! We’re trapped!”
I spot a desk and slide over the top and check the panel layout before using the sonic. The power comes back on, the doors open and everyone escapes.
I run back up the stairs.
I stop in my tracks at the sound of an explosion, Martha joining me shortly after, running into the Doctor as we reach a corner.
“What are you doing here?” He asks.
“Returning this.” I hold out his sonic screwdriver, “Thought you might need it.” “How did you…?” “Explosion? Definitely you.” “I blasted Lazarus.” “Did you kill him?” Martha asks.
Lazarus comes crashing down the hall.
“More sort of annoyed him, I’d say.”
We run around and end up back in the reception room.
“What now? We’ve just gone ‘round in a circle!” Lazarus bursts in and the Doctor heads for the device.
“We can’t lead him outside. Come on, get in.” We all hide in the device where we are pressed together like sardines.
“Are we hiding?” Martha asks.
“No, he knows we’re here. But this is his masterpiece. I’m betting he won’t destroy it, not even to get at us.” “But we’re trapped!”
“Well, yeah, that’s a slight problem.” “You mean you don’t have a plan?” “Yes, the plan was to get inside here!”
“Then what?” “Well… Then I’d come up with another plan.”
“In your own time, then.” The Doctor accidentally gropes me before grabbing his sonic screwdriver, “Here we are.” “What’re you gonna do with that?”
The Doctor slides down slowly to the floor and pops open a panel, “Improvise.” “I still don’t understand where that thing came from. Is it alien?” “No, for once it’s strictly human in origin.” He uses his sonic screwdriver on the wires attached to the panel.
“Human? How can it be human?” I ask. “Probably from dormant genes in Lazarus’s DNA. The energy field in this thing must have reactivated them. And it looks like they’re becoming dominant.” “So, it’s a throwback.” “So it’s some option that evolution rejected for us millions of years ago, but the potential is still there? Locked away in our genes, until Lazarus unlocked it by mistake?” I ask. The Doctor continues to work on the wires. “It’s like Pandora’s box.” Martha says.
“Exactly. Nice shoes, by the way.” A blue light fills the capsule.
“Doctor, did he just turn it on?” I ask.
“Yep.” The machine begins to spin. “I don’t want to hurry you, but…” Martha worries.
“I know, I know. Nearly done.” “What’re you doing?”
“Trying to set the capsule to reflect energy rather than receive it.” “Will that kill him?” I ask.
“When he transforms, he’s three times his size, cellular triplication, so he’s spreading himself thin.” “We’re gonna end up like him!” “Just one more!” The Doctor pulls a wire.
The Doctor opens the door and steps out, Martha and I right behind him.
“I thought we were gonna go through the blender then.” Martha admits. “Really shouldn’t take that long to reverse the polarity. I must be a bit out of practice.”
Lazarus is lying in his human form, naked, on the floor.
“Oh God. He seems so… human again. It’s kind of pitiful.”
“Eliot saw that, too. ‘This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.’”
Medical services, come to take the body, carrying it out on a gurney in a bag. We watch from the steps.
The first to see us is Tish, “She’s here. Oh, she’s all right.” She hugs Martha. Martha’s mum slaps the Doctor on the face, “Keep away from my daughter.” “Mum! What are you doing?” The Doctor puts his hand on his cheek, “All their mothers, every time.” “Not mine. Though to be fair, I don’t want you meeting her at all.”
“He is dangerous! I’ve been told things.” “What are you talking about?”
Mrs. Jones takes Martha by the shoulders, “Look around you! Nothing but death and destruction!”
“This isn’t his fault. He saved us, all of us!”
“It was Tish who invited everyone to this in the first place. I’d say technically, it’s her fault.” Tish elbows Leo in the side.
There’s a crash. The Doctor and I look at Martha before running off.
We run down the street where we see the ambulance, the doors open and the medics merely husks.
“Lazarus, back from the dead. Should’ve known, really.” The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver and searches for Lazarus like he did earlier. “Where’s he gone?” I ask.
“That way. The church.” “Cathedral. It’s Southwark Cathedral. He told me.” Tish informs us.
We proceed up the nave inside the cathedral, the Doctor in the very front with his sonic held out in front of him.
“Do you think he’s in here?” Martha asks. “Where would you go if you were looking for sanctuary?” I retort.
We move forward through the empty cathedral to the open space behind the altar and underneath the bell tower.
Lazarus is sitting there, gasping, a red blanket from the ambulance wrapped around him, “I came here before. A lifetime ago. I thought I was going to die then. In fact, I was sure of it. I sat there, just a child… the sound of planes and bombs outside.” “The Blitz.” “You’ve read about it.” “I was there.” “You’re too young.” Lazarus scoffs.
“So are you.” Lazarus laughs, but it soon turns to gasps of pain as he fights the mutation, “In the morning, the fires had died, and I was still alive. I swore I’d never face death like that again.”
The Doctor walks around Lazarus slowly, looking up at the bell tower.
I watch, knowing he’s planning something.
“So defenseless. I would arm myself, fight back, defeat it.”
“That’s what you were trying to do today.” “That’s what I did do today.”
“What about the other people who died?”
“They were nothing. I changed the course of history.” “Any of them might have done, too. You think history’s only made with equations? Facing death is a part of being human. You can’t change that.” “No, Doctor. Avoiding death. That’s being human. It’s our strongest impulse, to cling to life with every fiber of being. I’m doing what everyone before me has tried to do. I’ve simply been more… successful.” Lazarus groans in pain as his body tries to change. “Look at yourself! You’re mutating! You’ve no control over it! You call that a success?”
“I call it progress. I’m more now than I was. More than just an ordinary man.” “There’s no such thing as an ordinary man.”
“He’s gonna change again at any minute.” I whisper.
“I know. If I can get him up into the bell tower somehow, I’ve an idea that might work.”
“Up there?” I ask.
He nods.
“You’re so sentimental, Doctor. Maybe you are older than you look.”
“I’m old enough to know that a longer life isn’t always a better one. In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle. Tired of losing everyone that matters to you. Tired of watching everything turn to dust.” The Doctor squats beside Lazarus, “If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you end up alone.”
“That’s a price worth paying.” “Is it?”
“I will feed soon.” “I’m not gonna let that happen.”
“You’ve not been able to stop me so far.” I walk up behind Lazarus, “Leave him, Lazarus! He’s old and bitter. Thought you had a taste for fresher meat.” He snarls and chases after me.
Martha and Tish run with me.
“Doctor! The tower!”
We run up the narrow spiral staircase that leads to the upper level.
We hear screaming.
“Did you hear that?” Tish asks.
“He’s changed again. We’ve got to lead him up.” “Abby?!” I peer out of one of the archways on the upper level, “Doctor!” “Take him to the top, the very top of the bell tower, d’you hear me?!” I nod, “Then what?” “Abby, come on!” Tish grabs my arm.
We run off.
We arrive at the top of the bell tower, which is a circular walkway with wooden rails.
“There’s nowhere to go! We’re trapped!” Tish exclaims.
“This is where he said to bring him.” I say. “All right, so we’re not trapped. We’re bait.”
“He knows what he’s doing. We have to trust him.” Martha tells her.
We hear a hiss, “Ladies.” Lazarus enters, blocking the only doorway.
“Stay behind me. If he takes me, make a run for it. Head down the stairs, you should have enough time.” I tell them.
“But…” Martha attempts to protest.
“Just do it!”
Lazarus attacks, swinging his tail down.
We all scream.
Lazarus knocks away part of the wall.
I get hit by his tail and fall over, clinging to the edge.
“Abby!”
Lazarus leaps across to stand over me. “Hold on! Get away from her!” Martha screams. Tish and Martha hold their heads in agony as the sound waves from the organ resonate in the tight space. Lazarus begins to writhe.
I try to hold on. Lazarus topples over the edge and falls to the floor below.
I’m about to fall when hands grab my arms.
“We’ve got you. Hold on!” “Abby?!”
The two sisters pull me back onto the walkway.
“I’m okay! We’re all okay!” I cry, hugging them, “Thank you.” “It’s your Doctor you should be thanking.” “Told you he’d think of something.” I sniffle.
“He cut it a bit fine there, didn’t he?” “He always does. It’s more fun that way.” I laugh.
We come down the stairs.
The Doctor runs to us and pulls me into a kiss, “Never do that again.”
Tish seems confused, “I thought—” She looks to her sister.
Martha shakes her head.
We stand in front of the Tardis in Martha’s flat.
“Something else that just kinda escalated, then.”
“I can see a pattern developing. You should take more care in the future. And the past, and whatever other time period you find yourself in.” Martha smiles.
“It’s good fun, though, isn’t it?” I grin. “Yeah.”
“So, what d’you say, one more trip?” The Doctor asks.
“No. sorry.”
“What do you mean? I thought you liked it.”
“I do, but I can’t go on like this. ‘One more trip.’ It’s not fair.”
“What’re you talking about?” “I don’t want to just be a passenger anymore. Someone you take along for a treat. If that’s how you still see me, well, I’d rather stay here.”
“Okay, then. If that’s what you want.” “Right. But we’ve already said goodbye once today, so it’s really best if you just go.” She walks away from the Tardis, keeping her back to it.
I laugh, “Martha, sweetie. He said okay.” “Sorry?”
I nod my head at the Tardis.
“Oh, thank you! Thank you!” Martha hugs us and laughs.
“Well, you were never really just a passenger, were you?”

Clark Ashton Smith (Jan. 13, 1893 - August 14, 1961) corresponded by letter with H. P. Lovecraft from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937. In the letters which passed between the pair (they never met in person) there is a remarkable similarity in style and literary form. Certainly in Lovecraft's letters to Smith there was a tendency to reference fanciful ideas and a further development of his own fictional mythic backstory. Lovecraft never dared to lecture Smith, who was very close to his own age, on literary subjects. HPL took the attitude of 'teacher' and father figure to some of his younger correspondent friends like Long, Derleth, and Conover. Considering the sympatico elements of their fictional styles it is perhaps surprising that Smith and Lovecraft never created any tales together. Smith, however, was much more varied in his fictional creations than HPL. Many of Smith's stories were "interplanetary" whilst Lovecraft's nearly always centered on earthly events. Certainly there were alien beings from other planets or dimensions in Lovecraft's fiction, but in every case they had colonized our planet from other origins and the 'action' was always centered on Terra Firma. Lovecraft and Smith may have been hesitant to create a story together because the possibility of creating a row over any disagreement over particulars was always a potential. Most of the collaborations created by Lovecraft and others had been with the master essentially helping out younger writers. E. Hoffmann Price though close in age to HPL shared credit with Lovecraft in writing, THROUGH THE GATES OF THE SILVER KEY, but Lovecraft changed all but 50 words of Hoffmann's drafts and was never happy with the result even then. Collaboration was always a potential for stiffness and restriction for Lovecraft. Though it seemed that HPL respected Smith tremendously as an artist there were certainly glaring differences in the two men otherwise: Smith often explored erotic subjects in his tales and poetry, Lovecraft avoided discussions on sex whenever possible. In his letters to friends like August Derleth, Smith on the other hand was not hesitant to mention "making love" to his female dates. Smith had no problem enjoying a few glasses of wine either - Lovecraft claimed he had never touched alcohol of any kind in his whole life. Smith wore a moustache for most of his adult life. Lovecraft had a dislike of facial hair of any kind. Clark Ashton Smith had a tendency to wear clothing styles that Lovecraft would never have been seen dead in! Shirts with large lapels, barets, and somewhat ' progressive' jackets would never have been seen on the ultra- conservative Lovecraft. Lovecraft had a certain ability to overlook or forgive disagreeable elements in persons who otherwise showed creativity as poets or artists. Even in his day, artistic types displayed a tendency to be a bit eccentric in dress, speech, morality, or personal values. Lovecraft may have objected to certain persons in the abstract, but those who knew him personally nearly all claimed that he was a very loyal friend. (Exhibit 336)

Hi Flans! I was curious- I think I’ve heard either you or JL mention that you were Sparks fans. If so, how did you get into them? Did you ever see the Sparks Brothers doc from last year? I feel like you guys and the Mael brothers are sort of kindred spirits in a way. Hope you’re doing well!
Greetings from my broken rib/messed up back day bed-SO yes as a young teenager I followed Sparks pretty closely. They were on tv pretty regularly, and had some label push behind them, but as you know from the movie-it was less that they broke through then they persevered (a laudable trait in any performer) They were part of a crowd of glam bands that had very legit songs and that were gender-bendy and arty. I dug a lot of it.
Later on I remember my pal Jimmy Mack introducing me and John to the Giorgio Moroder track "Number One Song in Heaven" which seemed like a brilliant combination of very authentic (and specific) early German disco and the Sparks sensibility. It seemed like some very savvy shape shifting on their part.
I saw this 1976 concert-in the "pre-punk" moment when Don Law was throwing together triple bills of unlikely weirdo bands bring to fill the Orpheum. I was so captivated by all my live music experiences, I would typically get to the venue early and often count how many people were actually in the room. This show was extremely badly attended-half full-so kind of a disaster for all. (A year later the Ramones, Talking Heads-playing what seemed to be their classic song set-and Eddie and the Hot Rods would be presented he same way and while it was a more successful turn out, it still wasn't sold out.) Reddy Teddy were a band I had already seen a few times at the Rat (probably with crowds of two or three dozen) They were a kind of a street-level straight ahead rock act-kind of an ersatz Aerosmith but they have some very good songs.

I saw this 1976 concert-in the "pre-punk" moment when Boston rock impresario Don Law was throwing together triple bills of unlikely weirdo bands in some abstract hope of filling the Orpheum Theater in Boston. I was so captivated by all my live music experiences then, I would typically get to the venue extremely early and often count how many people were actually in the room. This show was extremely badly attended-half full-so kind of a disaster for all. I am not sure if John L. was there but Jimmy definitely was. We had absolutely the shittiest tickets-front row but fully obstructed view directly in front of the PA stack-so we were just getting blown up by the sound, and couldn't see a thing. After about five minutes we moved to the empty "reserved" seats in the front row and just pretended our 15 and 16 year old behinds belonged in the industry seats. (Jimmy's actually already kind of did, but that's another story) I remember Russell Mael stood up on the piano when he sang White Women and it seemed kind of scary. Patti Smith, who I think I had seen previously but I an't remember where, was now far closer to the "Candy Slice" parody that Gilda Radner did on SNL. Not to drug-shame anybody but she was clearly totally high on something very real. In the fullness of time, it seems to me she was unmistakably on heroin. At one point she kind of crumpled on the stage in what anyone would describe as a full nod, and someone with her show picked here up and carried her of the stage. The band played on, and in a bit she rebounded-jumping on stage to announce that it had just been announce on the radio that Bob Marley had been shot. I have no idea about if that happened or not, but it was an interesting bit of theatrical misdirection-kind of changing the topic from her miniature drug event.
(A year later the Ramones, Talking Heads-playing what seemed to be their classic CBGB song set-and Eddie and the Hot Rods would be presented he same way and while it was a more successful turn out, it still wasn't sold out.) It seemed like some very savvy shape shifting on their part. They really committed to the idea.

Okay, that was a *huge* drop of animated movie news from the Mouse House...
The takeaways...
MOANA 2, previously being developed a Disney+ series, is WDAS' 63rd film. Opening November 27, 2024.
ZOOTOPIA 2 is being released in 2025. No concrete date.
TOY STORY 5 and FROZEN III are being released in 2026. Again, no concrete dates for these, either. ELIO stays where it is.
So... My questions:
Walt Disney Animation Studios opened a unit in Vancouver to make Disney+ shows, MOANA 2 - when it was a series - was the one project that was announced as theirs. With Disney looking to lay off Pixar staff who were involved with that studio's Disney+ projects, following the losses that streaming is accumulating for big bad Disney, my concern is... What happens with this studio? Does it get closed down like Pixar Canada was back in 2013? Or do they continue, and function similarly to the Orlando unit that Walt Disney Feature Animation opened in 1989 but closed down in 2003? Before shutdown, WDFA-Florida went from making shorts and helping out on movies to graduating. They were making features on their own by the end of the 1990s, making three total: MULAN, LILO & STITCH, and BROTHER BEAR. They had a fourth film deep in development - A FEW GOOD GHOSTS - before the wing was closed down.
It appears I might have an answer here. These screenshots imply that WDAS-Vancouver is making MOANA 2. Or it's a co-production of sorts (hat-tip NCLuke1024 on twitter for these):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since WDAS' slate is gummed up with three sequels, all opening one year after another, I think it'd be smart to have that second studio stay open so they could possibly get both one of those sequels and an original movie out in the same calendar year. Speaking of which...
ZOOTOPIA 2 and FROZEN III were not given concrete dates. Currently, WDAS has the dates 11/26/2025 and 11/25/2026 locked. Would this mean three sequels in a row for them? MOANA 2, ZOOTOPIA 2, FROZEN III... Hmmmm, that would be a little too much... Like, why can't WDAS slot an original movie for like spring 2025 so that ZOOTOPIA 2 can get that Thanksgiving slot? They'd have to have the staff and resources for that, though... Again, what's up with the Vancouver house? What's going on with Suzi Yoonessi's movie? Josie Trinidad's movie? Marc Smith is hinted to be FROZEN III's director, if so, then that answers that question. I bet FROZEN III, given that the first two were Thanksgiving movies and have a very cold word as their title, is the 11/25/2026 movie. Pixar has March and June 2026 locked. Speaking of which...
UPDATE 6:28 PM EST: Answered a half-hour later, ZOOTOPIA 2 is in fact the Thanksgiving 2025 movie... Welp, we'll see where the next original lands, then.
TOY STORY 5 having no concrete date. Since TOY STORY 3, TOY STORY has been a summer thing. I'd imagine Pixar uses the March slot for an original, like they did in 2022 for TURNING RED (summer 2022 was LIGHTYEAR, TOY STORY spin-off), and 2020 for ONWARD.
TIANA... Hey, remember when Disney announced that a PRINCESS AND THE FROG Disney+ series was being developed? This was announced at their investor day event in December 2020, alongside the MOANA Series Now Movie, IWAJU, ZOOTOPIA+, and BAYMAX!
And now... Well, BAYMAX! came out first, then ZOOTOPIA+. IWAJU is out later this month, that was animated elsewhere, at Cinesite. MOANA The Series is now a feature film coming out this year... Where does this leave TIANA? Will that be reworked into something? Given that Disney is seemingly pulling back on original animated stuff for Disney+ following the burst of the streaming bubble... I'd imagine TIANA either gets cancelled, or turned into... Something.
A feature film sequel? Doubt it, WDAS does not have a functioning 2D unit at the moment for that. It'd have to be made elsewhere, like a Duncan Studio-type place. Though that would be weird, a new WDAS 2D movie *not* made at WDAS. I can't see it being made as a CGI movie, or a stylized PAPERMAN or WISH-esque movie, for consistency sake. Then again... Look at how DreamWorks went ham on the storybook painted look of PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, in comparison to the hyper-realistic and super-detailed first PUSS IN BOOTS movie + the rest of the SHREKs... Possible... But we'll see. I'd like to see the project go somewhere. More PRINCESS AND THE FROG is what I'd like. We've got the new ride coming, but I'd also like to see other stuff. They were mum on it today, so... Again, I'll keep my eyes on it. I'd be overjoyed if it was reworked into a feature, but, ya know...
Coincidentally that makes two former TV shows that are follow-ups to Disney animated movies directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who left the studio a while ago and were pursuing a METAL MAN movie at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Not sure where that's at now. Anyways, would love to know what happens with this series...

The perv can keep anonymous but the actual women will be doxxed and threatened if they go through with the lawsuit. All the whole the college administrators who allowed this to happen in the first place are able to pat themselves on the back for being progressive enough to let a man into a sorority.
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Seven women who have sued to challenge the admission of a transgender woman to their sorority at the University of Wyoming can't remain anonymous in court, a judge has ruled in a case highlighting tension over belonging for transgender people in the least-populated state.
The women must refile their lawsuit with their real names by April 20, U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson in Cheyenne wrote Thursday.
“The bottom line is this. Lawsuits are public events, and the public, especially here, has an important interest in access to legal proceedings," Johnson wrote. “Plaintiffs may not levy serious accusations without standing behind them.”
The seven women identify themselves only as “Jane Does" in their lawsuit filed March 27 accusing Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority of breaking its own rules while admitting the transgender woman last fall. The sorority national office pressured the University of Wyoming chapter to violate those rules, the lawsuit alleges.
The transgender woman, identified in the lawsuit only by the pseudonym “Terry Smith,” also is a defendant. Johnson is not requiring disclosure of her identity.
The women suing said they needed anonymity for privacy and safety reasons, including a likelihood of threats and harassment due to the lawsuit. Johnson ruled that they didn't meet the legal standard for anonymity, however.
An attorney for the seven women, John Knepper, declined to comment Friday on Johnson's order but said he planned to file a court document responding to it soon.
Smith declined to comment in an email Friday.
The lawsuit claims her presence in the Kappa Kappa Gamma house made some sorority members uncomfortable. Smith would sit on a couch for hours while “staring at them without talking,” the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit asks Johnson to declare Smith’s sorority membership void and to award unspecified damages. The damages should reflect the local chapter’s decline in financial stability and donations because of Smith’s induction last fall, the lawsuit alleges.
Kappa Kappa Gamma officials declined to comment Friday on Johnson's order. Executive Director Kari Kittrell Poole has said previously the lawsuit contains numerous false allegations.
Smith, 21, doesn’t live among the 44 women currently residing in the Sorority Row house because of housing commitments elsewhere, according to the lawsuit.
The University of Wyoming campus in Laramie has a long history of wrangling with LGBTQ+ issues since the murder of gay freshman Matthew Shepard in 1998 drew attention to them nationwide. Wyoming, along with South Carolina, is one of just two states that has not adopted a hate-crimes law since Shepard’s murder.
Republican Gov. Mark Gordon recently allowed a ban on transgender athletes in precollege interscholastic athletics to become law without his signature.

Doctor Who: 'The Lazarus Experiment'Part 2:
Fast forward to night time (I always wondered what they did in the day before the event, did the Doctor just chill in Martha's flat while Martha had a well deserved shower and did the errands she had said she needed to do the night of 'Smith and Jones'?) and the Doctor and Martha are all dressed up and ready for the event, Martha commenting that the Doctor looks very James Bond - esque. (No girl don't fluff up his ego anymore even if it is true!)
Tumblr media
Inside the party a party themed version of Martha's theme (where is this I need it!) and Martha is reunited with Tish her sister. Tish makes two comments to Martha which give an indicator of what kind of person she is. We established in the first episode that Martha is sort of a peacemaker within her family dynamic, brother stays out of it, Tish tends to add fuel to it, her parents seperation at the centre of it. She is also a hardworking medical student. But when Tish sees Martha, she says "two night outs in a row for you that's dangerously close to a social life" so Martha had clearly been forgoing her own social fun for her medical work. She's been purposely avoiding certain activities in order to became a trained doctor. This explains a lot right? The Doctor listens to this munching away on his 'nibbles' and Tish notices him in a very amusing way I should point out, the way she looks to him, then Martha then back to him, and Martha introduces him. In all my memories Tish was the younger sister, but she's actually Martha elder sister.
When Tish says "is he with you," I laughed a bit because it occured to me that Tish just thought this random man was just standing there, eating and listening to their conversation like a weirdo. And we have already established that Martha doesn't have much of a social life, so Martha bringing in this new guy raises eyebrows, "but he's not on the list how did he get in?" and Martha says a little shyly that he is her plus one. The Doctor then quickly changes the subject (probably because the psychic paper is in his brown coat which he is not wearing) and we learn that Tish is now head of Lazarus' PR department, something that shocks Martha. Remember what I said about The Master? The Doctor then technobables which is so cute because dude. She said she's Head of the PR department and organised the party, not that she was a scientist. "He's a science geek I should have known," also gives us another indicator into Martha - Martha likes 'science geeks' apparently "I should have known" so the Doctor is Martha's type.
Tumblr media
Martha looks incredulously towards the leaving Leitica, (siblings will get so straight to the point) clearly finding it funny and a bit rude and the Doctor asks what a science geek is and Martha gives a rather diplomatic answer to spare his feelings from Tish' mild insult which is sweet.
Tumblr media
Enter Francine mid conversation with Martha's younger brother Leo, complaining about Clive. Martha's has a very emotional reaction to seeing her, the way she says "Mum", the hug and the reintroduction of Martha's theme. Martha already knew she was coming but still reacted this way. All the danger Martha had previously faced with the Doctor appear now, the true impact of all she had done and experienced. Because although it's wonderful, it is also scary as hell.
I would argue this reaction is the reason Francine becomes so instantly suspicious of the Doctor. Francine had only seen Martha the previous night, but Martha reacted like she hadn't seen her in a while (which she hadn't). It also shows how close the two are, as she does not have this reaction with either sibling. I would argue that Martha appears to be the model child for Francine. Leo is only 21 but we see he already has small child. There's a partner but not no mention of a marriage. We know these things are not tantamount to being a great person, but we can infer that having a family so young all before his 21st birthday may have not been what Francine had planned for her son. Leticia also seems to have superficial tendencies with her propensity to gossip and high achievers. Francine's own marriage has failed. So it's really Martha who is doing the best, buckling down into training to become a Doctor. So it's not really surprising that the moment Martha starts to behave strangely, and a strange man she has never seen before enters the picture, the Kill Bill music starts playing.
Francine looks to her right (at the Doctor) and says "you disappeared last night." Martha replies that she simply went home, Francine looks over again "on your own?" And Martha introduces the Doctor again. Intriguingly, when Martha says that this is the Doctor, Francine seems to be a bit more approving, her demeanor changes, asking "Doctor what?" She wants her daughter to be a doctor, naturally she would be impressed by someone who already was one. But when Martha says it's "just" the Doctor and that they had apparently been working together Francine is suspicious again, because of course, this is the first time she has heard of it.
The Doctor, like Martha, lies to try and smooth over the obvious discrepancies in the story, his lie however opens up a can of worms after he tells her that Martha has told him all about her, and when Francine questions him, he states the obvious, looks to Martha for help (which she does not give and looks just as embarassed as he does). He then wades into dangerous waters after he tries to laugh it off by declaring that he doesn't know much because:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The innuendo is very funny but it hearkens back to my earlier point about the Doctor knowing little about Martha and her world, and the suggestive nature within Martha's season. Even John Smith later asks Martha angrily later in the season why is does the Doctor have her around, "what do you do for him?" I'm not sure if I'm articulating this very well, but hopefully you get what I mean.
Anyway, Dr Lazarus's experiment goes haywire and the Doctor pulls the plug and Martha opens the chamber to reveal a shiny new Richard Lazarus. The Doctor and Martha both point out just how unfathomable and dangerous the experiment was to a unfased Lazarus, they're both on the same level, both of their protestations mirror each other. None of them entertain the idea that what Dr Lazarus has done is a good thing. They then decide to do their own tests, helped by Martha cleverly gaining a DNA sample from Richard, an idea no doubt inspired by the Doctor's kiss in the first episode. So brilliant is this, the Doctor comments the same phrase he normally uses for Martha "Martha Jones, you are a star."
Martha verbiage also shows her brilliance later, commenting that after they both see the alterations on Lazarus' DNA that he has 'changed his own molecular patterns'. The Doctor technobables but it's interesting just how simairly they speak here, and Martha further reiterates how the DNA is still mutating.

2022 in review, part 6: comics & manga first reads
1. orcs! by christine larsen (2021)
this is frighteningly perfect. orcs as protagonists, cute (but not too cute for orcs) art, and just supremely powerful good boy energy. (yeah a lot of the protagonists aren’t boys, but i feel like all orcs have good boy energy regardless of gender.) also it’s kinda gay!
this filled a hole i didn’t even know could be filled (which despite being ace is oftentimes what i’m looking for with orcs, hey-o), with the only problem being that whenever i go out looking for more orc fiction i’m looking for this specific vibe and nothing else has it. woof.
(in all seriousness i wouldn’t want every orc story to have this vibe because that would make it less special, but still i want more of this than this and its immediate sequel, y’know?)
2. the witch boy by molly ostertag (2017)
given the title & author i am less than 0% surprised how strongly i vibed with this. this gave me so many gender feels.
3. batman/teenage mutant ninja turtles (2015-16) writer: james tyrnion iv / artist: freddie williams ii
a love letter to fans of both franchises. this is one of the all-time great crossovers between two totally separate franchises. it might be the best ever.
4. the adventure zone, vol. 4: the crystal kingdom (2021) writers: clint mcelroy & griffin mcelroy & justin mcelroy & travis mcelroy artist: carey pietsch
it took me a minute to get into adventure zone because i was so thoroughly spoiled by the frankly superior dimension 20, but it really does grow on you. and i think the crystal kingdom story is the first one where the comic adaptation actually noticeably improved upon the podcast. the ending especially was just so arresting seeing it in comic form, and it really had an impact on me that i don’t remember it having when i was listening to the pod.
5. superman: birthright (2003-04) writer: mark waid / artists: leinil francis yu & gerry alanguilan
not only is this the best verison of superman’s origin story i’ve ever seen, it’s one of the best superman comics i’ve ever read.
6. batman, vol. 2: the city of owls (2012) writers: scott snyder & james tynion iv / artists: greg capulo & rafael albuquerque & more
what made this so special is not just that it was the epic confrontation between batman and the court (and possibly his long-lost brother). it also had two side stories, one that showed that the new 52 version of mr. freeze is kind of a unique twist on the character, but i'm actually way more interested in the last issue of the volume. this issue featured a pair of super gay siblings named harper and cullen row. harper will eventually become the hero bluebird, but for now we just see her civilian life and how she first comes into contact with batman. and honestly, just seeing these two low-income queer siblings existing and being extremely relatable was such a joy.
7. avatar: tsu’tey’s path (2019) writer: sherri l. smith / artists: dan parsons & jay durresma
basically a drastically better version of the first movie with less human stuff. it couldn’t totally remove the shitty white savior stuff from the narrative obviously since it is following the same events, but it did at least push them off to the side as much as it could.
8. batman: hush (2002) writer: jeph loeb / artist: jim lee
i’ve been a batman/catwoman shipper since before i knew that shipping was a thing, so obviously i loved this. ivy being blatantly femdommy, and bisexual at that, was also extremely, extremely, extremely my jam. yes please. more of that, please.
9. pleasure & corruption, vol. 1 by you someya (2019)

i do wish so many authors didn’t seem so convinced that subby boys always have to “deserve it” by being pervs or whatever in stories like this, it makes them way harder to relate to. but yeah. seeing a boy get tied up and bullied a bunch is extremely wish fulfillment imo. also, loveloveloved the heavy emphasis on bondage, obviously.

Dusty Smith!
Potentate of Logic
Stephen Jay Morris & Pamela Amodeo-Morris
December 15, 2022
Scientific Morality©
Don’t be fooled: There is no censorship of the political Right in the USA. Let me reiterate: though the American, ultra-conservatives have a militant faction that engages in property damage and the inadvertent death of cops, the military industrial complex would rather have White, Right wing militias to contend with than hordes of multi-racial, Leftists conducting a revolution. Fuck yeah, that’s true! The so-called, “Deep State” knows that Neo-Fascists have a low aptitude because the counter-revolutionary Right has brain-washed their followers against the Left wing intelligentsia. Those type of domestic enemies, are pushovers for the corporate police state. The red neck, rude buffoons, with their AR15s fully loaded, haven’t got a chance in goofy-land to overthrow the government and its arsenal of nuclear bombs! Common sense is hardly sufficient! If you think the U.S. Marines are part of a Jewish cabal of globalists, then you have no hope of victory. So, when the ‘Original Gangsters of Cancel Culture and Censorship’ cry sweet tears of McCarthyite regrets, and amplify their wailing and gnashing of teeth about how they are being censored, just put a boot up their ass and tell them to go home to mama!
There are shit loads of pod-casters on YouTube and other social media platforms. Most them are Right wing grifters and mercenaries, chasing after fame and fortune. Some are Millennial amateurs that want to be the next John Wayne. A lot of them have personality disorders. These disorders range from A.D.H.D to Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Kanye West, the has-been Rapper, has Bi-polar Disorder. Astoundingly, you can actually garner a salary from some Right wing think tanks as a spokesperson for these people. Like Charlie Kirk does.
As for Left wing pod-casters, there are a handful of them; they can be counted on your fingers. Some who lean toward the Liberal and Progressive direction have made a go of it. David Pakman and Kyle Kulinsky are two. Then there is Vaush , the pseudo-intellectual, Libertarian-Socialist. Also, there’s the “Amazing Atheist,” T.J. Kirk.
However. What about the Lumped-proletarian? The pauper with a Southern accent? You know—the authentic human being? A political Charles Bukowski. A dude that has had his run-ins with drinking, getting stoned, and running a porn site. A social fuck up, if you will! Well, that man lives modestly in a small, Mississippi town; the only White man in a Black neighborhood. He is Dusty Smith, overlooked giant of YouTube pod-casting! Creator and producer of “The Dusty Smith Show,” it is apparent that Dusty spends countless hours preparing for each and every podcast. Initially, he appears a bit rough around the edges, but it doesn’t take long to see that he is a sensitive, passionate, intelligent, and empathetic human being. He will yell with conviction at the reactionary creeps whose Internet posts he exposes, until his face is beet red. He will cry heartfelt tears while playing a video that features a victim of unbridled police brutality and cruelty. He will joke like the great comedians of yesterdays past. He will chastise and correct himself whenever something goes amiss during his show—video won’t play; voice is out of sync. Oh, Dusty curses like a longshoreman in some foggy harbor; he comes from working class roots. But that is part of his charm. He is an open book, sharing big and small life events. He provides helpful, Internet links to useful programs and creative websites. Dusty is a creative songwriter, as well, and posts his recordings on Sound Cloud, for free download. All in all, he presents his show with deep conviction, profound insight, razor-sharp logic, and humble generosity.
Also highly noteworthy about Dusty is that he rescues dogs and cats from death row, and houses them in his self-run, animal sanctuary for as long as they need a home. Some of his cats hang around and lie next to him during his podcast, and can be seen on camera. His primary source of revenue is from the tips and Super Chats contributed during his YouTube podcast, donations from Patreon members, and gifts sent via US mail directly to his P.O. box.
So, how does this king of the Anti-Authoritarian Left get treated by YouTube? Like a turd in a punch bowl!
My wife and I think very highly of him. We two Baby Boomers are strong supporters of this Gen Xer, and we catch his podcast, “The Dusty Smith Show,” live every Monday and Friday night at 9 EST. Its duration is typically two or more hours, sometimes three; if we don’t stay for the entire show, we catch the rest of it, on video, the next day or so. I love it when he makes fun of Right Wing pod-casters and Evangelical hate preachers! Were it not for Dusty’s informative and well-produced show, I would be largely unaware of the vast amount of Right-leaning garbage circulating Online.
At any rate, Social Media is trying to purify all Left wing content and Dusty is on their shit list—as am I. But Dusty has way more followers than I do, so his show being banned hits him especially hard. YouTube recently banned it for two months! Not the first time and, probably, it won’t be the last. In the meantime, he is podcasting his show live on Patreon, same schedule. Sign up to watch and support him!
Ever since Elon Musk took it over, Twitter has become a Right wing ghetto, devoid of any intelligence or logic. They suspended me twice.
Social Media is starting with the hard core Left. Once they succeed in purging them, it’s on to the Socialists and Communists. After that, it will be the Progressives, Democratic Socialists, Liberals, and, then moderate Democrats. However, it won’t stop there. They will go after Black conservatives and Jewish conservatives. Conservative women will be demoted to Christian motherhood. I don’t care if you don’t believe me. It will happen.
Dusty Smith and other Comrades must be protected and supported. I said this once and I’ll say it again: We need our own platform! Free speech is idealistic, but at this time in history, it is not practical. Elon Musk does not care about free speech. That is, with the exception for his Right wing buddies. He really, only cares about money and ego aggrandizement. No rich man is going to hand us a web site where we can freely express our opinions. Until we all realize that capitalism is not going to trickle down to us, we need a peoples’ site that is a true, public square, full of soap boxes for us to stand upon. But, the rich pig and his Conservative, Libertarian, and Evangelical flunkies only want their side of the story heard. The so-called Left does not have wealthy sugar daddies to finance us. George Soros? Well, he may have died of natural causes by the time you read this. Like all classical Leftists, we have no money. That is why we robbed banks for the Revolution!
Dusty may be off of YouTube this time around—but he will rise again!

Series 4 Episode 11: Turn Left
Yoo here we go, we’re gearing up for the finale of series 4 and so today we’ve got Turn Left! The episode where we see what happens when The Doctor dies. Is it any good? Let’s see.
So as a child, this was my 2nd favourite episode and that’s through pure strength of concept. What would happen if The Doctor wasn’t there to save the world? It’s SUCH a cool concept and it allows the episode to show how integral the “family” The Doctor has on Earth is. Not only does The Doctor die in this episode, but so do his companions as they fight to stop the aliens from Series 3 & 4 taking over the world. Martha and Sarah Jane sacrifice themselves in the Smith & Jones events. Torchwood falls, saving the world from the Sontarans. My childlike imagination went wild imagining how these events went down and that’s no mistake. Just the idea alone makes this episode a classic.
Now is it executed well? Yeah I think so. The pacing is definitely very different to your typical Doctor Who episode though. The episode spends most of its runtime being a tragedy, spiralling into worse and worse areas as more of the world gets fucked up by aliens. It’s a really depressing watch I’m ngl dflkjg, as we see Donna’s mother become straight up depressed and even Wilf struggles to keep his spirit. But I don’t think them doing this is necessarily bad, it’s just straying from the norm which makes sense considering The Doctor isn’t there. Doctor-lite episodes are *the* place to experiment with the show and it’s always interesting to see what writers come up with when they write one of these.
Another thing I want to praise this episode for is setting up the final two episodes of the series, The Stolen Earth & Journey’s End. There are the obvious things, with Rose’s return being hinted at across the whole series and the bees disappearing, but this episode reintroduces you to the characters we’re going to see next episode. Sarah Jane hasn’t been mentioned since series 2, Captain Jack & Torchwood since series 3, etc. As mentioned in the first paragraph, this episode shows how important The Doctor’s family on Earth is by telling us about their fights to save the world in this hypothetical world. It primes you to be reintroduced to these characters, and to get ready for a universe-ending threat.
TL:DR/Overview: I really like Turn Left. It takes the big hypothetical question of “What if The Doctor wasn’t around?” and turns it into a full-on story. I respect it so much for that, and for experimenting with the formula of the show. This alongside the fact that it sets up the next two episodes so well without even needing to hint about the Daleks says it all. For the 5th episode in a row, Series 4 has another S tier. I just can’t help myself can I? :3

2024 World Rugby Sevens, Cape Town: NZ, AUS and Blitzboks aim to go back-to-back win.
On December 9 and 10, the World Rugby Sevens, Cape Town 2024 is scheduled to excite spectators, delivering a spectacle unmatched in the home of the Rugby 15 World Champions. The Springboks’ home ground, where rugby is possibly the most breathed in the world, will host the second round of the HSBC SVNS 2024.
The top 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams in the globe compete in the second round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens 2024 in Cape Town.
Those hosting Australia’s women and South Africa’s men top the standings after winning the Dubai inaugural round last weekend.
Samoa men and New Zealand women are defending their Cape Town championships, while New Zealand is the current champion in both the men’s and women’s categories.
Before the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, the redesigned HSBC SVNS will have seven regular season events in addition to a Grand Final with promotion and relegation up for grabs.
The men’s and women’s finals are scheduled for Sunday at 19:23 and 18:43, respectively, after the action gets underway on Saturday at 09:00 local time (GMT+2).

2024 World Rugby Sevens, Cape Town: Blitzboks aim to go back-to-back on home soil
The HSBC SVNS CPT action kicks off at 09:00 local time (GMT+2) on Saturday with the pool matches. Day two begins at 09:00 on Sunday with the quarter-finals and culminates with the women’s gold medal final at 18:43, followed by the men’s final at 19:23 local time. Tickets are available from R150 at Ticketmaster.
As the Blitzboks look to win their first series tournament in Cape Town since 2015, forward Zain Davids feels his team owes its supporters “a performance they can be proud of.”
After a dismal 2023 season, South Africa’s men’s Emirates Dubai 7s squad began their HSBC SVNS 2024 campaign with a spectacular victory last weekend, thanks in large part to Davids.
The team will next compete in their home tournament at DHL Stadium. It was there, eight years ago, that they last stood on the podium against Argentina, defeating a side that included current squad members Justin Geduld and Rosko Specman in addition to Seabelo Senatla, Cheslin Kolbe, and Kwagga Smith.
Australia determined to maintain momentum in Cape Town
2024 World Rugby Sevens in Cape Town. In an attempt to capture a tournament title for the first time in Cape Town this coming weekend, Australia’s head coach Tim Walsh has pushed his team to continue where they left off in Dubai.
Australia won gold in the Emirates Dubai 7s, their fourth straight victory at The Sevens Stadium, led by Maddison Levi, who tallied a tournament-high 12 tries.
The winning campaign featured elimination victories over the USA, France, and Black Ferns Sevens, who stopped New Zealand’s 41-match winning streak in the championship match. These three teams were among the top four finishers in the 2023 series standings.
New Zealand teams progress in Cape Town
When New Zealand plays Great Britain in Cape Town on Saturday (kick-off at 09:00 local time) in hopes of winning the event three times in a row, they will be without their captain, Sarah Hirini.
In the Black Ferns Sevens’ second pool game at The Sevens Stadium against the same opponents, Hirini sustained a knee injury. She will therefore not be competing at the HSBC SVNS 2024 Cape Town; Tysha Ikenasio will represent the team in her place.
In the HSBC World Rugby Sevens SVNS Series season opener in Cape Town on Saturday, both New Zealand Sevens teams experienced some close calls before making it to the quarterfinals.
The defending Dubai Sevens winners South Africa defeated the All Blacks Sevens 21-19, while the undefeated Black Ferns Sevens skipper Sarah Hirini seemed to sustain a serious injury during their 43-7 thrashing of Britain.
The All Blacks Sevens secured second place in the group with the win and a loser’s bonus point. They will take against the United States in the quarterfinal on Sunday at 8:42 p.m.
