lee oathofkaslana, i was wondering if you have any advice for getting into hi3, especially in regards to digging into the lore. i’ve been following along with your hi3 posts for literal months and i get more intrigued each time you discuss it so i finally decided to just go for it. i know theres the game/webtoon/animated shorts/cooking with valks but i’m not totally sure about how to go about approaching all of it and the more obscure elements (like the other games with the hi3 characters) because i don’t want to miss out on anything. is there a certain order of approach that you suggest? also, are there any resources that may help with taking it all in, like explaining the basics and the timeline or something like that? there’s no pressure to answer right away, i’m sure you might want time to compile your thoughts, i just trust your judgement on how to get into hi3 over trying to figure it out myself based on how knowledgeable you appear to be about everything.

reading lists! ok this is the most important thing so its going first. hi3's comics are a lot more important to the plot than like. genshin's. and its kinda annoying bc in some cases you'll be guided from going between chapters of the game to a comic and vice versa. i highly recommend checking out both of these reading lists: hoyostans reading guide (start from part 1 phase 1) archives wiki hi3 reading list the seconds a lot easier to follow imo! especially with the earlier ones. i personally prefer primarily using the second one and then consulting the first to see if there's any extra content that's missing (since some ggz/retconned hi3 comics are linked there and provide some context! the first one also has some very helpful notes from the OP!) i DO think that reading the comics in the order listed on the archives wiki and then starting chapter one is best. it might feel like a dip in story telling though but i promise it will get a lot btter once theyre a lot more stable w their game development and writing :)

other content: comics: ok first i have to put a warning. escape from nagazora is from ggz iirc and like. early ggz and early hi3 humor kinda sucks ass. there's awful sexualization of underaged girls and its weird about women and this is where a lot of the fetishization comes in. they're also not normal about consent here. also another warning about azure waters. it heavily references CSA and has an almost rape scene and i completely hated the way it was all visually portrayed. if needed I will gladly summarize these comics for you without any of those details. this aside, the comics are included in the reading guides! there are also non-canonical ones though! (4komas featured on the manga site and 4komas from the jp twitter! theres a google drive linked in the other post w fan translations. they're comedic and not at all canonical but they may spoil things since its run coincides with the game's progress so i dont really recommend reading them until you're farther along. atm i am just starting part 1.5 and ive read most of it, but i am intentionally avoiding newer ones just by looking at what design is in the thumbnail. they're very quick to read though dw!) animated shorts -> they are included in the game :) if you would prefer watching them in chinese, i'm afraid you'll have to look at it on youtube though :' for some reason on the western servers all the CG's in the first part are in japanese even if you switch your language to chinese. chronicles -> they're included in both the reading guides! theres some that aren't very lore relevant (dreams of gemima and kallen chronicles) but they're a fine source of weapons and crystals (hi3 equiv of primos) part 2 -> i haven't started it yet but from what i've seen, it's recommended that you finish part 1 before this. open-world -> again, follow the reading order for these :) the only exception is APHO because that takes place in the future (after part 1.5). i haven't finished it and i personally don’t plan to until after i do 1.5 in case there's any important spoilers! there are major hints that kinda spoil the end of part 1 though. <- same with the alien space comic. it takes place. sometime after APHO i think. other universe events -> primarily captainverse. obv these take place in a different universe! these characters are not the same as the main characters. iirc the only one that's really lore-relevant is honkai salvation log (it comes later in the game and later in the hoyostans reading guide!!) donghua: cooking with valks: not canonical content. season 1 is pretty safe but it is best watched after chapter 12 to get full context for some references! honestly you could probably get by with watching the rest of the series after imo but if you'd prefer to play it safe, the hoyostans guide includes it :) golden courtyard: do not watch this one until you finish chapter 31. journey crisis: do not watch this until you finish part 1.5 ggz/hg2: honestly. you don't need to know ggz for hi3. you would benefit from knowing the retrospective timeline's history for the main trio but from there on, ggz and hi3 follow completely different stories with different characters. honestly you could go by without knowing the main trio's history in retro i think its already explained enough in the main story and other media.

links. youtube: homulabs -> has cohesive lore videos that help a lot (esp later on)! also has some hsr stuff if you're interested :) hide's honkai archives -> playthroughs of all of part 1 completely in chinese (including cut scenes). also fixes up some of the translations since i believe the eng translations are translated from the jp dub! i mostly use this to both rewatch chapters when i need background noise and look at cutscenes with OP's translations. i find it interesting.. official hi3 youtube visual novels: again, look at the reading guides. im pretty sure think some of those links on both guides are wonky though so ill provide them here. ae visual novel (eng) shattered swords/7 swords visual novel (eng) durandal visual novel (eng) i also have a larger post with various links here build/combat: ok this is my weakspot. marisa honkai -> kind of unfortunate backbone of the hi3 community. allegedly kicked someone from his discord server for saying kiana is a lesbian. but his infographics are useful! he also has a youtube but i can't vet how his videos are o7 <- lore player and very obvious about it elysian realm shallow sequence -> in case you're ever struggling w this part. dont worry about it early game though you'll get to it in time. honestly its optional though so.

quick tips/loose info:

the wikis will be your best friend.

do the character trials!! they teach you how to use any of the characters and you can open them whenever you want! if the battlesuit is new, you will also get rewards if you do the trial in time :)

honkai has an absurd amount of currencies for some fucking reason. this is more of a warning than a tip.

ok imo hi3 combat is super super fun but my god the powercreep sucks asssssssss. i hate the process of building characters because you have to pull for characters signature gear and that equipment banner's pity doesnt carry over it fucking sucks.

BUT don't worry too much honestly if you are just playing for the story like i am it doesn't matter too much since you don't need to use your own valkyries for much (story wise). do at least build some though even to a minor degree (you will need them for chronicles)

speaking of gacha though! there's no 50/50 to worry about in honkai!

don't go into the chat for room 1 its fucking scary and full of weirdos (derogatory) and assholes. first and last time i went there i saw homophobes.

1. SUBTLE POWER PLAY - Circe isn't the strongest sinner out there, she has some strength to her, yes but if she stepped on the wrong toes, her goose is cooked. Which is why she's very much the type to subtly plan, from her very open personality to thinking two steps ahead. What she doesn't have power wise, she makes up in intelligence. Her open personality is something that I imagine is perceived as weak, which is something that works to her advantage. Biding her time, learning about weaknesses to those she's deemed her prey && striking like a viper when the time is right. It's something that I'm sure I could go on about all day but I'm gonna wrap it up.

2. CREATIVITY - Being a runway model in life && becoming a designer in the after life, Circe is a deeply creative person. She's thinking of new designs on the daily, bringing mere drawings to life in her boutique. Such creativity can extend to other outlets, of course!

3. MEMORY - I personally feel like despite her claim of not remembering much && seemingly brushing off things, she has a good memory. Especially when it comes to things that she could possibly use to personally extend her own goals or get the jump on someone!

sorry for rambling in your inbox, but i saw both of ur posts on honkai star rail and it is also driving me bonkers on how so many people are just focused on the shipping? like shipping is fine but what about the story?? the platonic interactions?? all the subtle and unsubtle backstory hints?? its not even in just this update like how are there so many things about literally every male character shipped with each other? i need to find more speculation about march 7th i am growing desperate and i have started making my own theories

generally idgaf about shipping like ok go have fun doing whatever you want forever and ever but ... when. a fanbase COMPLETELY ignores the story in favor of shoving the first two men that exist in the same general vicinity together ... and override both of their personalities so they fit better into all those typical Yaoi tropes... and then it becomes impossible to find any other content and discussion within the fandom because of the sheer volume of this uwu yaoi nonsense and no one pays any attention to the WOMEN despite them making up the majority of the cast... i... can't help but get a little annoyed. lol.

i kiiiiiind of got the impression that it was her decision to have her memories taken away. the garden of recollection are tricky folks, but i don't know if they'd be so cruel as to deny her everything if they weren't respecting her own wishes. as for Why she would have chosen that... i've got nothing lmfao. the special outfit she wore for the festival on jarilo probably foreshadows that she was once royalty or some equivalent to it. hell, maybe she was even an emanator of fuli! or something along those lines. like, i think her connection to the garden of recollection probably runs deeper than them just taking away her memories

idk when we'll get more clues about her... i'm hoping somewhere in the next update? or maybe even in this one, scattered in some of the side quests and collectibles and readable items.. 🤔

“How did this happen?”

Fidgeting under his brother’s harsh gaze, Shay glanced to the side, focusing on the cluster of small cups circled neatly around the teapot on the table. Steam rose from the glazed, earthen pot and one of the cups nearest Mikal, filling the room with a familiar, grassy smell.

“Shay.” A note of warning crept into Mikal’s tone. Shay winced. “Should I plan for a long walk this evening, or did you cover your tracks properly this time?”

Careful to keep his back and shoulders from touching the chair, Shay gave a terse shake of his head. It never failed to amaze how just a handful of words from Mikal could make Shay feel so much like a chastised child. Likely had something to do with the fact that he was nearly always right.

“It was just a couple of drunks at the tavern. I handled it.” Lips pressing into a thin line, Shay pushed down some of the frustration and the budding shame of needing Mikal’s help yet again. The pain radiating out from his shoulders and upper back wasn’t doing much for Shay’s mood, either. The wounds itched where blood dried and the material of his tunic stuck to the clots, and every shift of posture brought new discomfort.

“‘Handled it’,” Mikal echoed, with just the right dose of doubt and reproach to have Shay glowering at the little cluster of cups. “Looks more like you rolled around in it on a filthy tavern floor.”

With a sigh, Mikal rose, one hand sliding his untouched cup of tea over to Shay and circled around behind his brother to better inspect his wounds. “Here. Have some tea, it’ll help.”

Mikal’s solution to most things was tea. Feeling ill? Have some tea to soothe a cough or calm your stomach. Upset? Holding a warm mug will help you relax. Injured? If the stomach-turning combination of medicinal herbs in the drink itself doesn’t ease the pain, the distraction of having something to sip is better than nothing.

Shay grimaced. “I’ll pass.”

“Hm.”

Repositioning in his seat to give Mikal better access, then bracing his forearms against the tabletop, Shay hissed. “Don’t ‘hm’ at me.”

“Then drink your tea.”

Shay pointedly did not.

Without missing a beat, Mikal helped Shay out of his cloak. For all his nagging and sternness, Mikal was never cruel, and his touch was one of practiced ease—neither rough, nor shrinking from what needed to be done. In all likelihood, he’d decided that whatever injuries Shay had sustained from the fight itself were punishment enough.

With the dark, roughspun material of the cloak out of the way (set aside on the next chair, neatly draped over the back for the inevitable wash and stitching it’d need later), the damage to Shay’s back became more obvious. The light colored tunic he wore beneath showed the bloodstains in vibrant splotches of red. Bits of glass poked through the tears, their positions too awkward for Shay to remove himself.

A brief assessment later, and Mikal swept out of the room to retrieve his tools. The sound of rustling and clinking followed. Mikal returned swiftly, armed with a well-worn leather kit of implements, a pan of water, and a stack of clean rags.

Not needing the direction after a lifetime of Mikal playing nursemaid, Shay stood stiffly, turned his chair around to straddle it wrong-ways, and braced against the table again.

A sense of uneasy anticipation sank in Shay’s gut, but he only nodded when Mikal informed him the shirt was a loss. The sound of slicing cloth followed. Gentle tugs, and a rogue’s nimble fingers lifted the fabric, careful not to snag it on the shards of glass still lodged in Shay’s back. Even the most careful hands could do little about where it had already stuck to the drying blood however, and Shay winced each time the fabric pulled free.

Once the soiled cloth was discarded, Mikal cleaned away the excess blood, hummed again, and reached for a pair of forceps.

“Glass next,” Mikal informed, and Shay grimaced at the object his brother set on the tabletop in front of him. A short length of leather-wrapped wood, about as thick around as Shay’s thumb.

Swallowing a sigh, Shay wedged the bit between his teeth. Nodded.

Mikal worked quickly, sparing Shay’s dignity enough to at least pretend he didn’t hear the sounds that managed to escape past the stick. Piece by piece, bloody shards dropped onto a cloth laid out across the table. Each one left Shay’s skin with a stinging bite and the trickle of fresh blood.

And what felt an eternity later, Mikal let out a satisfied, “Hm,” and set the forceps down beside the pile of extracted glass. “Done.” Gently, he dabbed a rag across Shay’s bloody back one last time, then tossed that aside too.

Shay pushed out a breath through his nose, hands clenched atop the table to keep them from trembling. Sweat beaded at his brow and stung horribly where it touched his wounds, but at least it was almost over.

The perks of living in a house of Spinners.

Normally, Shay would do it himself. But exhausted as he was, and with no good way to see what he was doing, leaving the mending to Mikal was a matter of necessity.

Turned away, Shay didn’t see his brother reach for the Lines, but he felt it. The sudden warmth that hit his mangled back, like a latticework of sunlight, sinking into him. Deep, deeper than his bones, entwining with his own essence and urging skin to knit and heal.

It itched, as Mikal literally pulled strings to trick Shay’s body into days or weeks worth of healing in a matter of minutes. When he finished, the pain was nearly gone, leaving only tender, pink scars where the cuts sealed.

Cautiously, Shay rolled his shoulders. Nodded in approval and relief as the action brought only a twinge of discomfort.

“There,” Mikal said, a note of strain in his voice that hadn’t been there before. He tapped Shay twice on the shoulder and fixed him with a knowing look. “Now drink your tea. It’s getting cold.”

This time, Shay didn’t argue.

Out of curiosity have you ever saved plushes from being dumped in the trash or rescued any that got lost outside at all 😭

Yes quite a few actually! The first plushie I've rescued in recent times was a lilac colored bunny rabbit. I found her laying on the street in front of my dad's house one day when it was raining. It was also the day after trash day, so I figured someone was trying to throw her away and took her in. I gave her a bath and she was good as new! I named her Tulip.

A more recent rescue was a lilac colored beanie baby bear that I think is called Clubby by TY? But I named him Henry! I found him when I was walking to therapy one day. He was laying on the sidewalk, but I hoped he was simply misplaced and that his owner would return for him. But when I walked to therapy the following week, Henry was still lying there, and it was raining that day. So when I was heading home I took him with me and cleaned him up. I sat him next to Tulip on my night stand for many years (and yes they're friends!)

And an even more recent rescue was of a lilac colored beanie boos owl (I have no idea why all these abandoned plushies are the same color its a super strange coincidence!) I showed her on the blog before, her name is Moonlight! The tl;dr about her rescue is that she belonged to a neighbor, and the neighbor tossed her in the dumpster with a bunch of other stuff that had been left outside for a few days (stuff that I presume belonged to an ex). My datemate and I had kept watching out for Moonlight for the day she might be tossed and we literally dug her out of the trash when that day came.

I wish I could share pictures of all the friends I just talked about but they're in storage ;w; (Moonlight is stored in a box in my room tho so I could grab her but she's pretty deep in there rn. I have a pic on my blog somewhere of her after a bath if you want to see)

Rescuing abandoned plushies isn't a new thing for me tho. Even as a kid I was dumpster diving for stuffed animals (I sadly don't have any of those rescues anymore tho, and I hardly remember any of them. Except for one. She was a green gorilla with velcro on her hands, her name was Veronica. I miss her ;-; ) Anyways this answer got a bit long but I hope you enjoyed reading it!!!
