“REMEMBER: BLOOD IS JUST WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY!”
It’s Color Theory EP 21.
Sore Losers
Trivia
This makes the first reappearance of Rosie (formerly Scarlett) in It’s Color Theory.
Gordon never appears in his regular clothes in this episode while Violet exclusively appears in her main outfit in her brief appearance.
This is the first episode Martin appears without his glasses. Additionally, Ingrid lacks her eyeshadow and mascara. Both get them on the final page.
Gordon’s physical strength appears for the first time since the third episode.
The “blood is weakness” gag is recycled from “Teacher’s Pet Peeve” in Rough Sketch in which Sylvester and the prototypes for Tanya and Orchid all say this verbatim independently of each other. Fittingly, Martin’s prototype was one of the recipients of said line.
Tyler, Ingrid, and Martin were all originally meant to suffer more comically exaggerated injuries from their training. This was heavily downplayed in the episode proper to the point that Tyler is hardly affected at all.
This is the first episode Ingrid appears without Geneva; she only has one line this episode. The following comic inverts this by having Geneva appear but Ingrid absent.
Violet’s symbol is a spade from this episode onward.
No orange, green, or gray Drewmans appear.
This is the first episode Tyler appears where he suffers no major misfortunes.
Effect(s): Jawbreaker (Tyler pulls his teeth out and uses them as daggers, spits them out directly, or releases a shockwave with his bite force); Bubble Bauble (Tyler chucks a water ball at the opponent); Waking Crash (Tyler’s aura mixes with water to form the shape of a shark); Riptide (Tyler projects a sharp edged disc of water)
Family Members: Drake Mugwyrm (Brother), Unseen Parents (Disowned)
His hairstyle was inspired by Lord Dominator from Wander over Yonder, but I don’t have that kind of space.
Development
Tyler’s design changed directly in correlation with his relevance. When he was just a major side character, he was the spring green Ringo and sported a reptilian design. The jump to ICT rebranded him as the viridian Ridley as seen below. Making him a more prominent character directly resulted in him having a more well known color as his base, hence him taking Hermes’ old color palette and his design and lizard motifs going to Clay.
As a result, Tyler gained more of a shark motif instead. His personality became a bit more rounded upon his promotion; he was largely a joke in RS, and while he’s not much more effective in ICT, he’s clearly more genuinely threatening. Of course, this only makes his redeeming qualities all the more rewarding. On a side note, the fact ICT is an in-universe organization is a group of sketch comedians and Ty isn’t usually the kind of guy to be seen with them in public should be entertaining.
“Don’t close the door don’t close the door DON’T CLOSE THE DOOR”
It’s Color Theory EP 18.
Scooby Dooby Don’t
Trivia
This is the first Microsketch to feature Lyman, Coco, Tyler, and Chloe. This also marks Lyman’s second speaking role overall and the first episode since Tyler’s debut where he doesn’t speak.
This marks Tyler’s third consecutive appearance and the first episode in which he appears but Ingrid and Geneva don’t.
No Yellow or Violet Type Drewmans appear.
The fake parody names given here are all what the characters are literally named in the show’s version of Scooby-Doo. The Drewmans, unlike me, fear no copyright laws.
This is the first Microsketch to parody a specific franchise. This is also the first Microsketch to lack bloopers, instead having a post-episode skit.
After her difficulties walking the episode prior, Coco/Shooby is exclusively seen on all fours when in character.
Is Coco’s character a girl or is she playing a guy? I don’t really know.
While everyone else has a costume, Chloe/Irma only wears a palette swap of her usual outfit due to the ropes covering the insignia on her chest and her legs being offscreen eliminating the need to replace her pants with a skirt.
Despite debuting in episode three and already having a spotlight episode, this is the first time Peony’s colors are used for the title card.
Chloe is the only Primary Character to appear.
Noah and Lyman’s new voices are heard for the first time.
Ingrid Jelton wrote this sketch in-universe.
None of the characters use their regular outfits. This is also the first time a character appears but their face isn’t shown. In this case, it’s Tyler.
No, Tyler hasn’t died again.
This episode spoofs the “Scooby-Dooby Doors” bit by having the characters be trapped in the hall.
The pink cuffs on Peony’s sleeves disappear and reappear between shots…would you be willing to believe this was shot over the course of multiple in-universe days?
After being mentioned in the previous comic, this marks the debut of Oz Square, the Bad Part of Town and the first time we see one of the subdivisions of Dullsville outside of the one the core cast lives in.
This marks the first appearance of Tyler in the It’s Color Theory universe, having gone by “Ringo” in Rough Sketch. This also marks the debuts of Bobbie, Charlie, and Dwight.
Tyler being the guy Ingrid and Geneva had previously beat up off screen was decided after the previous comic was written but before this one was. Adding him in made his introduction easier. The girls’ mentioned landlord would’ve filled his approximate role.
Siren was originally going to be the one to drop them off. This was scrapped both for pacing and because it would leave Rudy, Angie, Chloe, and Bryan stranded in Oz Square, the Bad Part of Town.
No Yellow or Gray Type Drewmans appear.
This is the second episode in which someone dies. In this case, Tyler is hit in the head by a door.
Ingrid’s parents (Alyson and Phyllis) and Geneva’s grandfather (Ezra) all cameo as pictures in the background.
A month passed between when the story was boarded and when the dialogue was written, meaning several details changed: The cutaway when Rudy is talking to Tyler originally had dialogue; Geneva was initially meant to cap off her story with something to the effect of “And that’s how I met your mother”-this was changed to prevent her from dropping two non sequiturs in a row; similarly, she was meant to misidentify Tyler as a tax collector, Ingrid’s nonchalant response serving to correct her; Rudy’s appeal to Tyler was initially to unconvincingly promise Ingrid and Jen wouldn’t attack him again, to which Tyler agreed to (the fact Rudy was already sporting a smug expression made it easy to change to a threat); finally, Bryan and Geneva’s final exchange was initially a one liner by Angie.
Tyler was completely right. He’d destroy Ingrid and Geneva in a fair fight since Geneva lacks technique and Ingrid isn’t all that strong on her own. Angie would’ve smoked him, though.
Siren let the girls go early on good behavior. Given that all the other law enforcers are superheroes that can level cities, she can afford to be lenient.
This comic takes place about half a day after the previous one. The ending is around ten in the morning; Violet is not a morning person.
Compared to Fuchsia, Tyler certainly looks the part of a dangerous person, especially with his razor-sharp fangs, but he puts way too much effort into trying to be mean with relatively little to show for it. Sometimes he doesn’t even bother trying; he’s generally more openly friendly than Fuchsia. Other times he’ll accidentally level buildings in an attempt at petty vandalism.
Fun Facts
Tyler’s surname is a play on “gummy worm”, playing off Fuchsia’s surname.
Tyler is one of several characters to change colors and names in development. In his case, he was Ringo (spring green) and Ridley (viridian). Specifically, his first name and color motif were both formerly associated with Hermes (cinnabar), who was completely overhauled in the visual department. Appropriately, Hermes in turn inherited his design from Clay (terra cotta), who was redesigned to resemble Tyler’s prototype.
Tyler’s early designs had a distinct reptile motif to them. His final design trades them for a shark theme, resulting in Ringo/Ridley’s one fang becoming a full set of shark teeth.
Tyler, as Ringo/Ridley, vaguely resembled Rudy with a squared off jaw and different hair. Despite this and Hermes (the original Tyler) actually being a relative of Rudy’s at that point in development, present day Ty loses all resemblance to him.
Tyler’s distinct Mohawk was inherited from Charlie’s (chartreuse) prototype design, when she was still named Olive.
Tyler had a scar over his left eye in the initial version of his final design. It was scrapped because, given his usual antics, what would have caused it?
Tyler made himself and Fuchsia matching couple shirts. As you can vaguely make out, he’s already a head taller than her in the above photo despite Ty slouching and Fuchsia standing on her toes. Needless to say, the shirts fit neither of them.
