Thinking about the Don Suave scene and what it means in terms of LGBTQ+ representation because my brain does nothing if not torment me with random topics to ramble about on the regular.

Anyway, I just wanted to ramble about why I like the scene but to get it out of the way - the scene can very easily be interpreted in so many different ways, and all of them are valid. I personally see it as Leo having at least some attraction to a man. And the following is an explanation of my own interpretation and thoughts on it and what it means especially for Leo’s portrayal in the grand scheme of things.

Long-winded interpretation under the cut!

Now, to start with, it’s important to me that in the scene Leo looks at Don Suave in the very beginning and then for the entirety of the rest of the time the man is on screen, Leo’s eyes are closed. Yet, in the end, he is still visibly enamored with Don Suave, happily cuddling up to him as he’s being carried away.

You can very easily interpret this as Leo being spellbound and that’s honestly super valid and I believe he likely was at least somewhat in the beginning, but considering how fast he looked away and how he never looked again, I personally think it makes more sense to read it as Leo just finding the man attractive, at least somewhat. (For the record, I personally headcanon Rise Leo as bisexual with a heavy preference for men, but I want to be blunt when I say that any interpretation is valid. Literally any. Ace, pan, gay, bi, none of the above or a mixture of something new literally all of it is more than okay and fair. Hell you could even interpret this entire scene as more romantic attraction than physical and it would still work. Anything goes!! Don’t bother people, guys, really.)

The main reason I take this scene to be at the very least LGBTQ+ adjacent isn’t just because of how it’s portrayed, but because of who Leonardo is. Not in terms of Rise of the TMNT, but in terms of the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™️ franchise.

Leo’s a character who, while changing with each iteration, has still at his core been around for decades upon decades as “the blue one”. One fourth of the team. He’s the one most are going to look at as the Leader, and oftentimes he is the one closest to having the title of Main Character. Not to say the others aren’t just as important, but Leo’s presence in the A plots of basically all TMNT media is often something very main character-esque.

And that’s very, very important to note. Here we have a Main Character of a prolific and decades long-running franchise distributed by a children’s television network. You can play around with his and his brothers’ characters all you like, but there is always going to be challenges to dodge around, especially since this was still in 2018-2019.

For example, you can play around with their designs so long as they’re color coded turtles, but their sexualities? Now that’s tricky.

“But what about Hypno and Warren?” Not main characters and also they’re Rise originals. They have a lot more room to play around with than a character like Leo does. But even talking about main characters in the franchise, you could arguably have an easier time playing around with Donnie or Mikey’s sexualities than Leo or even Raph, as (unfortunately) the former two tend to get more B plots, so they’d likely have had a little more leeway (still not a lot though.)

So, where does this leave us?

It leaves us in a place where outright stating and/or showing undeniable proof of Leo’s attraction to men is very, very difficult. So, workarounds!

Workarounds like the entire Don Suave situation.

To be honest, as left up to interpretation and lowkey and deniable as it is, this whole scene means a lot to me because of who Leo is as a character. It’s just nice when we get so see even the bare bones of representation with characters that have been such a large part of pop culture for decades, y’know? Even if more would be so much nicer, this is better than I thought we’d ever get for these boys.

And, again, literally nothing I’ve said is the only way to interpret it, I’m more than happy when people interpret media on their own honestly, it’s just something I’ve been thinking of lately and I was wondering if others felt the same way.

Whatever you think when you interpret this scene or Rise Leo as a whole, I just thought this would be interesting to think about, even if it was ramble-y, haha.

Dethvanity is really funny to me conceptually as an episode because you can see how little they had to make the characters insecure about for the bit. They swing for obvious lowblow choices with Pickle' baldness and Nathan's weight and even those require some suspension of disbelief because ok. Sure. Nathan '(said extremely proudly) never skipped a meal in my life!' Explosion is insecure about being a big man now. Nathan *guy who everyone thinks is smoking hot 99% of the time* Explosion is a tiny bit larger than usual and is insecure about it now. Lol. Lmao even.

But anyway then we hit Skwisgaar and Toki and there's like NOTHING to swing for, you can see them going uhhh ok Skwis doesn't sleep he probably drinks a lot of coffee, and Toki? Shit, what does Toki have to be insecure about with his looks. He's perfect, he's adorable, he's ripped. Um. FUCK IT, HE'S DOING NOTHING BUT EATING LEMONS. WE GOT NOTHING, WE GOT NOTHING, JUST GIVE THE BOY CITRUS FRUITS.

Ananza is the wind deity, though she's not the first with that honor. Originally the elder gods selected a man as their wind deity but after he witnessed Oh and Fulj being punished he requested to relinquish his role. Basically asking them for a mortal death rather than immortality. They obliged since the deities exist to help humans and a miserable deity won't do the job properly so no need to keep a deity bound to a task they don't want to do.

So Ananza was selected as a replacement. Fulj has no recollection of the first wind deity and Ananza has already been told by the fire deities that it wasn't Fulj's fault but she was the final straw for the former wind deity. So, Ananza doesn't hold any dislike towards Fulj and actually really likes listening to her talk. Ananza loves to dance and wander around her city so when Fulj stops by to visit, she listens to Fulj's adventures while they roam the city.

Because there are two fire deities and one can stay in their city while the other wanders and because Fulj no longer has a city to be focused on, the three like to visit the other cities to check in. Ohime and Ohiwe really like to visit Ananza while Fulj prefers to visit Ymber. While Ananza likes Ohiwe, Ohime, and Fulj, she really isn't fond of the ice deity or Ymber. She doesn't like to scramble for topics and ice/Ymber don't start conversations enough so it's a bother to Ananza to try forcing friendliness. She loves light hearted stories though and Fulj and the fire deities excel at that type of story.

(Ohime and Ohiwe sometimes call her Nana and on that note it's lore in the tags time)

#the daily life of a deity sucks #also fwiw ! deacon doesnt really tell anyone but he really wants to meet the wind deity #because he might have lost his mom at a young age but she was originally from the city of wind and had wind magic #so he would watch his mom dance either solo or with his dad and it was always fun to him to watch how happy his mom was #so when he was told it was a dance she learned when she was a child he doesnt think much of it #but he sees ohime trying to show ymber a dance he was finally getting down and then ohime pauses #cause hes trying to remember and deacon is like oh you clap three times not two #and both ohime and ymber are staring at him like what did you just say #and deacon is like yeah uh you do the claps but kinda like this in order to keep the flow free and light #and ohime is just smugly looking at ymber saying oh ? really? youve been teaching him dance moves?#and ymber is just hey dont look at me so ohime is baffled and then fulj has?#and deacon says he learned of it a while ago from someone else haha sorry if hes wrong it could be wrong #thats why ymber asks him later about it and finds out deacons mom was originally an ananza follower #and is like huh wild while ohime is now plotting how to get ymber and deacon on a vacation to see ananza #and honestly i really just want to have deacon meeting ananza now and being in absolute awe of the deity #because THATS HER YMBER THATS THE ONE MY MOM WORSHIPPED #and ymber is able to be around deacon and ananza while they converse and that #helps ananza realize ymber isnt as cold and distant as she thought he was - fascinating #and also she likes deacon who holds her in such reverence despite being ymbers follower

Regarding the previous post, I think the way I approach trying to evaluate a piece of art is asking "Do I think the positive things I get out of it outweigh the parts of it that I don't like?" And when I call something a "guilty pleasure" song/show/book/piece of media/etc. it's really more in the sense of, "Given who I am as a person, the flaws I've found in this should be complete dealbreakers for me, but somehow they aren't, and it makes me feel like I'm having an identity crisis."

#like. I think something like...idk shiki or cxgf excels on multiple levels. I understand why I like them. given the things I look for in art #it makes sense that these shows would speak to me because they make the effort to showcase those things I look for. because the people #in charge of those works clearly valued the same kinds of things and cared about seriously exploring them.#but with something like. uh. ctrlz. that is NOT the case and I frequently found myself going 'why would anyone make this writing #decision?' but I still sat through all 3 seasons of it! I still really enjoyed it! those flaws SHOULD have made me give up according to #personal history but they never did. and I very very much genuinely question why. I have NO IDEA why I still care about this #silly convoluted teen drama show so much. but I do. I wrote SO MANY FUCKING POSTS ABOUT IT.#I really love wicked the musical. I've heard many people call it 'hokey' or 'cheesy' or 'objectively bad' but here's the thing! brain: anyway. tma michael's apocalypse fear domain would be a small restaurant building that, when you enter it, is full of seemingly endless hallways and rooms that are a recreation of the restaurants. it invokes a feeling of bittersweet childhood nostalgia, almost LOOKS like the local places you went no matter where you were, but the air is hot and suffocating and the further you walk the more everything starts to look progressively melted until all of your surroundings are up in flames. you are compelled to try and play the assorted arcade games because for some unexplained reason you're convinced they'll provide an escape and it's Your Life, it's your life and in it everything you've ever loved is slowly ripped away and you can FEEL all of it as if it's actually happening. but the worst part is the guilt, it's all your fault and you know it, why not just walk into the flames and become part of the destruction you created? and at the center of it all where you'd expect the charred remains of its victims is just a childhood bedroom. the figure there is in flames too.

jingliu is a perfect example of "if this female character was male, shed be universally loved instead of heavily criticized"

#for me it uh. tends to have more epic lows than epic highs. im very unlucky with shounen #occasionally a few years after something i start reading it'll turn out to be good #but any time i follow something from the beginning it starts getting. worse #is it me? am i doing this? dont tell me to read your favourite shounen i'll turn it bad #did i ever mention that one manga. the moon is beautiful but first die #a mouthful of a title. it started kinda goofy but i really adored the main character for some reason #im still a bit attached to him. he cleans so well that he got the magic power to see real good. and now he can matrix bullet time #hes just like me for reeeeeeeaaaal hflkanjvdkfljfds but yeah that manga was. weird but fun BUT THEN #it got so wack you guys you dont understand. the first like one or two volumes? fun #everything else? god knows JHKFDJFDK i still read it all tho. i was invested in my guy with seeing real good powers #and im sorry to say. unfortunately it seems. a certain manga with a big tv adaptation that is pronounced oh she no co #my curse. its started. although that ones very much a epic high and epic low situation like itll be so so wack one minute #and suddenly get good again and then plummet back down HFKJDSBHJds we will see how it goes on #i started getting annoyed with the writing after the stageplay arc because they kept like. time skipping over so much #which i thought was a bit of a waste because there was a lot of interesting potential in a lot of the showbiz storylines. but we shall see #thats not shounen tho thats seinen but my curse applies to some seinen too LOL but most seinen i read is already finished #and shoujosei is spared from my curse. i think just because most i have the opportunity to read in english just tends to not #be drawn out or have weird scheduling things messing with the pacing. are there any weekly shoujosei magazines out there #i dont think weekly manga is good. for a lot of reasons mostly the mangakas health but also i find more weekly stuff i read #that isnt like. 4koma stuff suffers in its pacing a LOT. but again that might be my curse. the second i lay my eyes on it. the curse #(sorry ive been catching up on a lot of manga recently LOL ur getting my manga thoughts now)

| 'Nother old gal who hasn't been touched since 2018 where I kept going on a spree making all these colourful Yiga OCs for the BotW era before I decided to change them into their own thing...

Anyways this is Nariko, she's Shigure's twin sister and is ofc the complete opposite to his personality- fhfnfhdh Aaaaand uuuuuhhhh... Yeah I just forgot I need to update his ref sheet and put it back on the post cuz I just realised I actually forgot to do that!.. But uh yeah anyways, not much to say other than she's Shigure's twin, she's a lesbian aaaand she actually works for the Frostclaw organisation from another region! She's like a delivery guy~~ (ETHEJJETHHHHOMG LIKE FR!! When they were all Yigas of mine then Nariko was LITERALLY a postal service specifically assigned by Takeshi after he took over Kohga's position like years after a different outcome to the original story thrjgegehd- How the fuck did I make that connection and just remembered said fucking connection holy shit that was YEARS ago how did I remember that shit!!)

... But uhm yeah so- ... Time to adapt her character further some other time and hopefully I'll have all my OCs finished by the end of the year! ... To which I doubt but one can dream...

Twin sister to Shigure, they both share the same last name "Lotus" as neither are even married to anybody; Not saying Nariko herself hasn't got her eyes on someone, in fact she's overly fascinated with her supervisor, Monaka

She works at the postal service department of the Frostclaw traders in the Marshlands, which is close to the Sacred Forest; She does her deliveries mostly on foot which for comedic reasons gets her lost, stuck or sends her to the other side of the land to where she was supposed to go

In order to travel more "efficiently" during her shifts, Nariko had actually adjusted her boots so she can somewhat easily travel on almost any surface whether marsh, gravel or grassy lands to get to her destination... Instead of being a normal person and using transportation literally provided by the organisation

She doesn't see her brother often due to where they both work, but no doubt she doesn't enjoy the smell of his smoker breath and will always badger on to Shigure about the health complications and all sorts with the excessive smoking

Loves eating wheat, just raw wheat; Like her brother who nibbles on paper for whatever reasons, Nariko loves wheat for the texture of it against her teeth

Even though Nariko is also a member of the postal service department, she's also part of the security and defence for the Marshlands branch; She carries a sniper gun, making her a very skilled and reliable sniper

She's had her fair share of encounters with rogue assassins and even Kira's henchmen on her travels, especially a couple times coming across the Bounty Hunter; Who of course whoever is an ally of the Golden Palace whether directly or indirectly, will be attacked on sight, especially as the Frostclaw (Takeshi specifically) are very close allies to King Aurelius. She had to make a run for it or hide a few times even just hearing news of said Bounty Hunter is ever in the area; Fighting alone is futile in this instance

Because of travelling so much due to her job requiring it, Nariko has picked up a lot of languages and accents around the realm that she is fluent in almost every single one

... Ok and yeah! That's all for Nariko for now, I'll try adapting her and a few others some other time when I've finally gotten to at least the rest of my OCs... I srsly hoping to get to most of them by the end of the year, to which I still have a plenty of time til then, but.. It's just trying to actually get to them when my motivation decides to be a piece of shit..

Luckily I'm taking my sweet ass time with art and OC refs so hopefully I get the ball running with that..

Anyways- Another drawing/OC ref added to the art spam which will either hopefully be this week or in the span of the couple weeks since I at least have a few Saturdays off.. To which I'm only be working two days so that's nice! I'll hopefully have more time on my art along with other irl related stuff-..... Yeah, guess that's it!
