i recently had my first tarot reading from kat at neptune and wine, and wanted to write a little review as i took notes during the reading - yes, i am a virgo rising, why do you ask? kat is currently taking clients for tarot and oracle card readings, so drop her a message via @neptuneandwine if you're interested! read on for my review :-)

technical stuff first: we did the reading through a voice call, and kat was flexible with time slots to suit my schedule. she used the rider-waite (the OG) tarot deck for the reading, and on one question she used the 'momento mori' deck from black and the moon for clarification cards. i had prepared three questions beforehand and asked an extra question afterwards. little disclaimer, we are good friends IRL, but this is just how i felt about the reading, trying to be as unbiased as possible!

i asked questions related to my studies, career path and close relationships, and i felt like i got some real insight. something that came up that i found really interesting was, as kat put it, 'your pain is your strength'. this was when looking at how my skill set related to my studies and work. kat has a real way with words and an ability to translate complicated card pairings into simple terms, and she utilised clarification cards to truly understand the full picture. she took the time and care to make sure i understood the reading and was happy to proceed to the next question, and delivered the reading with a natural, conversational flow; it didn't feel formal or intimidating in any way, which i have found to sometimes be the case for other readings i've had before. i've been studying tarot casually for a while, but it's not something that is clicking naturally for me, the way astrology does. kat actually explained the astrological parallels with the cards to me, which i found really useful in terms of understanding what the cards themselves stand for, outside of the interpretation.

i left the reading feeling refreshed and like i had gained new insight into old issues. that fresh perspective is really helpful for me personally, as it allows me to regroup and come back with more positive energy. i was thinking about the reading for quite some time afterwards, not because i had unanswered questions but because it was enlightening and motivating, and i wanted to reflect on the answers i received. i have found them really helpful, and have been trying to implement the advice in my daily life too; looking at ways i can expand my skill set to improve my chances at moving into a more satisfying career path, for example, and taking a big leap of faith with a topic for a uni assignment (which, so far, is paying off).

all in all, i can highly recommend kat as a reader; she has a true understanding of tarot, and is able to convey their messages in a thoughtful, evocative, but not overbearing manner. she is also a talented astrologer in her own right, but prefers to focus more on tarot and oracle cards right now. thank you kat, for the wonderful reading <3

Book review - Beautiful World Where Are You by Sally Rooney

What is it? Two friends from uni haven't seen wach other in a while. However, they send each other tons of emails. And have complicate love lives, though I don't think that's the word I'd use for it.

Who should read it and why? People in their 20s who do not know what to do with their lives, burnt out Millennials who would read everything when they were kids, lonely people, people who read "Normal People" and weirdly related a lot with what they found there. Alice and Eileen (and Felix and Simon) are normal people in their own right.

Which genre(s) is it? Contemporary novel.

What is the setting? Late 2010s (the epilogue is set in 2020/pandemic times), Dublin and a small unnamed town in Ireland. Alice is a writer, she visits Rome and other places too.

How are the characters? The four main characters, Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon are realistic and well-rounded. By the end, I was sure they were my pals. Their relationships are realistic too. I love them, I want to hug them, I want them to take me out for brunch and to send them emails and comment how the world is ending around us while we text or eat a pancake or drink wine ok.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the novel? Sally Rooney's style, to me, is stunning. I loved how she wrote in Normal People, and here loved the style even more. To me, that is the great plus of the novel. I'm not sure I'm unbiased enough to find one of the weaknesses of the novel, though it could be the style, after all. I love it, but I do understand that the sad white Millennial European girl experience is not universal, nor universally liked and likable. Rooney's writing to me is very much that, and while I am a sad white Millennial European girl, I get that people who aren't might not like this after all.

Did I cry and/or laugh? I laughed a lot, I cried a lot (because of Eileen and Simon + because of Alice and Eileen), what can I say, I gave this book 5 stars on the Storygraph, of course I laughed and cried.

Who shouldn’t read the book? If you don't like sad white Millennial European girl first world problems, I'm not sure you should read this book. Furthermore, there's some intense scenes, so I would suggest you to check extensive lists of trigger warnings if you have any concerns or concerns on your mental health.

Any random comment? I'm not a huge friends-to-lovers supporter and frankly speakng I think I can relate a lot more to Alice and Felix when it comes to my love life, but if anything were to happen to Eileen and Simon I will become feral. They make me believe in love, ok?

I'm Ms. Cole (or Cait, for any non-middle schoolers), the librarian at Lincoln Middle School in Syracuse, NY. I've started this blog for a graduate course I'm taking at the University of Buffalo, but I've long wanted to have a space where I can share not only book information but also reviews, tips and tricks, and general library-related content -- so here we are!

The first topic I wanted to speak about on the blog is web privacy. As a middle school librarian, it's my job to teach kids how to safely navigate the internet. One major component of that is understanding the concept of a digital footprint. According to Techterms.com, a digital footprint can be defined as:

Every time we search for something on the Internet, every post we make on social media, every purchase we make online...it all contributes to the makeup of our digital footprints. And the data that is collected on us can sometimes have negative consequences.

While there are many components to safeguarding our privacy on the Internet, I like to teach my students about how to effectively and securely use search engines. Many of my kids have no idea that websites like Google or Yahoo keep track of everything they search for and therefore tailors their results based on their own personal interests.

To get unbiased, unfiltered results when searching online, we have to turn to alternative tools like DuckDuckGo. The alternative search engine allows you to remain anonymous and therefore keep your digital footprint unaltered. This will help keep those weirdly specific ads off your Instagram feed, among other nuisances!

To illustrate my point to students, I will pull up two tabs on my web browser during one of our lessons. One tab has Google open, the other DuckDuckGo. Because I nearly religiously have a coffee in my hand at all times throughout the day, I use this as an easy example. Into the search engine I type "best coffee shops."

Naturally, Google's first several results are all specific to Syracuse, and even more specifically to my neighborhood. The top result is one that I've recently ordered online from. Top results from DuckDuckGo, on the other hand, include articles from Food and Wine, the Food Network, Thrillist, and other popular food blogs. There is not one mention of a coffee shop in Syracuse.

This example usually gets kids thinking about how they're being tracked on the Internet. It also tends to open up an interesting dialogue; one inquisitive student might ask why we wouldn't want the personalized results that Google provides. Can't it sometimes be helpful? It's a nice segue into a conversation about ethics and user privacy.

I've found DuckDuckGo to be a great tool when teaching my students the critical digital citizenship skills they must master as they move through K-12 and beyond. I would highly recommend integrating the website into a library lesson plan!

Let's start here. Something I think a lot of newer writers don't understand about good writing is that it takes time and practice. The first story you write... maybe even your tenth story... probably isn't going to be publishable no matter how hard you work on it. And I say "probably" because once in a blue moon someone writes a first story that's so good, they knock it out of the park, but that's extremely rare. When you see those passionate people whose stories are panned, it's almost always a situation where someone posted or published too soon. They shared their work before they've had time to hone their writing skills.

So, the big secret to improving your writing skills is to understand and accept that it's going to take time. You're going to write a lot of stories that you're passionate about, but those stories are probably not good enough to share widely--and that's okay. Most writers go through this, especially ones who are self-taught rather than learning through formal education or even writing workshops and courses.

Once you've accepted this, your goal is to just write. You need to build up a body of finished stories without worrying about sharing or publishing each one. If one strikes you as particularly good, earmark it for later, because you can always go back and revise it for wide sharing/publishing later on when you know you're ready.

Outside of writing and writing a lot, here are other things you can do to improve your writing skills:

Read. A LOT. Especially in the genres you write in.

Read books about writing.

Follow writing blogs/advice sites and writers on social media

Get an alpha reader or critique partner for early feedback

Get professional writing critiques

Take writing classes/workshops (some are free/available online)

Fill your creative well (Guide: Filling Your Creative Well)

How to Make Sure Your Writing is Good

You can't know if something is good if you know very little about it. For example, take me to a winery and give me several samples of red wine, then ask me which one is award-winning... I'm going to give you a blank stare. Sure, I've tasted red wine. I've even been to a few wineries. But I don't really know that much about wine. I don't know much about the different kinds, what makes them unique, the different flavor profiles, or what qualifies as good or bad. They're all just going to taste like wine to me.

If you're a newer writer who hasn't spent a lot of time writing and learning about writing, it's going to work the same way. You don't know enough about writing to determine whether or not something you've written is good or bad.

That's why it's absolutely essential to get unbiased feedback if you want to improve your writing and share it widely one day. Even with a story you don't plan on sharing/publishing, feedback is a critical part of learning what you did wrong and how to fix it.

As your writing skills improve, so will the feedback you're getting, and so will your confidence in your writing skills. Until then, things may be a little shaky, but you just have to remember that when you're learning, it's okay to write bad stuff. If you've never picked up a paintbrush before, you wouldn't expect to sit down before a canvas and paint a breathtaking mountain scene. If you've never worked with clay before, you wouldn't sit down with a lump of clay for the first time and expect to sculpt the Statue of David. You have to be good with creating bad art before you can create good art. But the more bad art you create, the less bad it gets, and you will definitely see a difference between your early art and your later art. It definitely aged like fine wine, but I also think it reached its full potential after 1989 came out because that album proved that Taylor could do pop once and for all, which probably made people appreciate the pop tracks on RED and the album as a transition more. MicTheSnare's opinion on rep (him calling it an album "flawed in a very unique way" when comparing it to an AJR record in his DDD on them hits the nail on the head) are exquisite, and even though I didn't jive with him criticizing it for lack of relatability (which is not the peak of musical ability), I think if I view that opinion more as "music should make you feel something regardless of how much it fits your personal life", then I strongly agree. It's the issue I had with Solar Power: I don't need Lorde to write music that fits my life, I just want to feel something when listening. And I... Don't?
