A different flavour of Darkelf
Artsource
Anyone who's played eldenring knows that the subterrnaian stretches of the map are some of the coolest regions ever created for the franchise: ancient cities built into the walls of caverns vast beyond imagining, all lit by an eerie phosphorescence that one could easily mistake for innumerable stars. There are many creatures the underground, from priests of melted clay to shamanistic hulks that revere the budding of horns.... but most interesting to us today are the Nox, secretive worshipers of the night sky banished beneath the earth.
I couldn't help but be struck by how cool the Nox were, and how great they'd be as an alternative take on drow, still maintaining some of the darkelf hallmarks but providing a lot of fresh elements. Now, I'vealready posted my general take on the drow, but since I'm doing a 'soulslike roleplaying' project at the moment ya'll are going to have to indulge me as I've got Elden ring on the brain.
Here's some random Nox lore for you to pilfer for your own campaign:
The Nox once lived on the surface world and worshipped the moon, stars, and night sky, but were forced underground when a new order emerged and declared them heretics for failing to bend the knee. This was not a slow process: when challenged the Nox invented a weapon that could kill the destiny controlling god of their enemy and in retribution that enemy smote their cities underground by divine edict. The surviving Nox were rightly pissed about this and have been working through the ages to take their revenge.
You can tell you're in Nox territory because of the false night sky decorating the cavern ceilings, such is their love for the stars. Their culture is theocratic and matriarchal, dedicated to preserving the rites and traditions of their once great era. Much of their teachings are based around waiting for a so called "lord of night" one who will bring about their promised return to the surface and an end to their exile. Sadly because their enemy controls fate and has halted the progression of the stars, this lord will never arrive to overturn the status quo, leaving the Nox in theological limbo.
One of the many mystical traditions guarded by the Nox is the creation of life through the manipulation of alchemical quicksilver, primarily a servant species known as the albinorics. These homonculi come in different shapes but are consigned to much of the drugework in Nox territory, and are reliant on their creators to keep their bodies from degrading. One faction of the Nox have even attempted to create their supposed night lord through the use of this silver tear alchemy, and if that doesn't strike you as a fasinating questhook I don't know what will.
Another of the silverwrought gifts of Nox alchemy is to be reborn in a new shape, a trick most Nox use to prolong their lifespans through the ages but some utilize as a means of infiltration, detectable only by the fact that those who are reborn bleed silver. This of course only adds to the surface dweller's paranoia over the Nox, of whom they only usually encounter wandering alchemists, strange mystics, and plotting assassins.

Hiya. How are you?
I wanted to request a Aizawa headcannon in which he has a daughter and they are both kidnapped by a daengeorus villain, so he do everything to protect her and escape. With happy ending please hshshs
Thanks you. Hope you have a great week 🧡🧡
Aizawa x Daughter Reader: Kidnap
(Trigger Warning: this is a Dark fanfic and involves mentionings of kidnapping, abusive relationships, allusions to rape and may be uncomfortable for certain audiences. Please be advised)
You are an underground pro hero. You are 22 years old and have your old man’s quirk of Erasure and your mother’s quirk of Spy Eye
Basically your mother’s quirk allows for her to summon floating eyes that she can remotely control and see with. (Kinda like Gaara’s sand eye technique from Naruto) her quirk mixed with Aizawa’s and gave you the ability to summon eyes that had special effects like quirk erasure, x-ray vision, infrared (heat detection) vision, laser eyes, foresight and night vision
Your drawbacks are dry eye as well as migraines from eye strain
Aizawa is retired, at age 48 and lives in a nice apartment.
You had a boyfriend that you tried to break up with after you discovered his abusive tendencies
That didn’t go over too well. After a fight, he managed to get away and since you didn’t have enough evidence to arrest him and get him put away, you had to collect evidence
What you didn’t know, was that he had learned about Aizawa and decided to kidnap him not knowing that he was a retired pro hero
Your ex had a similar quirk to Midnight’s, he could emit an anesthetic gas that put people to sleep. Thus his job as an anesthesiologist in the hospital
He used his quirk on Aizawa and tied him up with quirk restraining cuffs and blindfolded him. He brought him to an abandoned warehouse to use as bait and texted you his picture saying if you didn’t come alone, then he’d kill him
Of course you tried to save him, but the moment you entered the building, even though you were wearing a gas mask, he managed to get behind you and a fight broke out
In the struggle, he managed to cut the strap on your mask, allowing you to breathe in the gas and fall asleep
After you were caught, your ex had you restrained in quirk restraining cuffs. He then put you both in a car and drove to an abandoned cabin in the woods.
After waking up, you see your Ex with a scalpel about to kill your dad. You beg him not to and that you’ll do anything, just please don’t kill him
Aizawa has tape over his mouth and despite his struggles and attempts to protest, your ex eventually agrees
He then takes you into another room where he begins to beat you up, punching, kicking and cutting you with the scalpel
Aizawa is struggling as he can hear your cries of pain and the thuds from your body being hit.
After beating you into unconsciousness, your ex was planning on forcing you to have his children so that you couldn’t leave.
As he is with you, beating you, Aizawa uses a hidden compartment in his prosthetic leg that holds a utility knife. He manages to break the restraints on himself and breaks down the door as the your ex is about to force himself on you
Aizawa beats him up and uses his skills revealing his identity as Eraserhead. He ties the Ex up and carries his daughter to the car outside.
He drives you both to the hospital where you’re treated and he calls the police to arrest the ex
When you wake up, he tells you that your Ex has a history of this kind of behavior with previous partners and that he won’t be out anytime soon.
Hizashi comes and drops off new clothes for you as well as get well cards
Aizawa asks how long you had been in that situation, he fears that his mistakes as a father had lead to you being with an abusive partner.
You reveal to him that you had no idea about who your Ex really was and that he only acted this way in the last 2 and 1/2 months of their year long relationship
After this, Aizawa has you move back in with him until you get better
(Hope you enjoyed this.)

For all skeleton dads - His kid asks him to play a game of Hide And Seek with them. He spends time searching but he can't find his child, they're an expert on hiding.
Undertale Sans - That's fine. He plays along for five more minutes then he utilizes his soul-detection skills to find them. It's only cheating if he gets caught you know. And since he's very good with his magic, you have no way to prove he cheated. Two can be clever in this house.
Undertale Papyrus - That's fine. He's very patient as well. After 20 minutes, Papyrus drawn a plan of the house on the wall that he is now analyzing like a war strategist. He will not lose this battle. You can't hide forever. He set up traps everywhere in the house to make sure you don't move from your hiding place. You won't escape him. Unfortunately, the only thing he caught was Sans, who didn't have the memo about the trap exposition inside the house. But he's not giving up!
Underswap Sans - He loses interest after five minutes and gives up to go do something else. The kid is going to wait a long, long time for nothing lol.
Underswap Papyrus - After ten minutes or so without a hint where his toddler is, Honey starts to completely freak out. He starts to trash the room, screaming after his kid, more and more distressed. Come on now! It's not funny anymore! Come out already, he swears he's going to have a soul attack any moment now!
Underfell Sans - He was starting to panic, imagining hundreds of excuses he would tell his S/O when they got home about how the hell he lost their child, but then the kid simply walked in by the front door. Red then realized that little shit actually tricked him to hang out with their friends outside. He can't believe it. He's so mad! You're so grounded! Go to your room this instant! He's in a bad mood all day, he hates it when people are manipulating him.
Underfell Papyrus - OK, maybe he can understand why. Edge got a little too caught in the game and started to hunt down his child like he did with criminals Underground, acting all creepy and scary. Right now, his child is completely traumatized and refusing to get out by fear they get arrested, led to the King, and executed in the Public Place. Nice parenting, Edge. He's not sure how he's going to explain this to his S/O.
Horrortale Sans - He spends his days searching after things and then not remembering what he was looking for, so he just assumed it was the same. He went to Willow and said he lost something at the park but was not sure what. Then Willow asks where is the kid. AH. Willow starts to freak out, running to the park to find his abandoned niece/nephew who is having a panic attack because their dad literally disappeared in front of their eyes lol.
Horrortale Papyrus - So. That's awkward. He leaned to watch under the table. His back made a horrible popping sound. And he's... Well. He's stuck. He can't stand up anymore, and he's in pain. But that's fine. In a very loud sigh, he calls Toriel for help, to both search his child and, you know, unbreak him. He will remember this hide-and-seek game for a long time.
Swapfell Sans - He's both proud and terribly pissed off. Proud because he's the one who taught his kid to hide this well. But also very pissed off because they ran to hide somewhere the second he asked them to clean their room and now they're playing dead and won't come out, and it's so embarrassing because he has no clue where they are. He's having an existential crisis right now. He's supposed to be the general of the Royal Guard??? This house is not even that big??? Why can't he find his child??? Is he sucking at his job that much???
Swapfell Papyrus - Oh that's fine, he has ways to find them. Like threatening to behead their favorite teddy bear with scissors and watch them crawl out of their hiding place in panic. Or throwing an artificial bomb that smells like a fart in a room without an open window. He's maybe bad at searching, but he's really good at finding people anyway. Added to that, he's very proud of himself.
Fellswap Gold Sans - Wine gets annoyed very quickly he can't find his child so he's using his soul magnet. Wherever the kid is, he finds their soul and drags them out, and too bad if there's a wall on the road, next time you'll hide in the room where he is standing.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - He panicked after long minutes searching for his child and so he went to hide in his closet to calm down. Only to meet face-to-face with his child. Ah. Well, s-still, he needs a hug right now so he comes to hide with you!

Between 100-130 million years ago on Atterra, lophiiformes (anglerfish) split off from other teleost fish and began diversifying much like their Earth counterparts. During this period, a group of early anglerfish began to crawl along the ocean floor, just like the extant frogfish of Earth. This lineage of anglers found their way into the hollows through flooded or underwater tunnels. Slowly transitioning from salt water to brackish waters before finally becoming freshwater fish as they adapted to their new environment. These underground anglers began to use their diminishing swim bladder as a basic lung as they clumsily walked across the cavern’s floor in search of new hunting grounds and/or water sources to breed. Each new generation of these amphibious anglers became increasingly efficient at terrestrial locomotion. As time passed, the rays of the amphibious angler’s fins fused to resemble tetrapod limbs. This adaptation allowed them greater survivability from predation by anthropods (arthropods that diverged early in their evolution, developing an internal skeleton, lungs, and a closed circulatory system). Enabling them to diversify into different niches.
As their limbs became more specialized for movement on land, the terrestrial anglerfish split into three distinct lineages found in the second and third layers of the hollows. The more basal ambush predators who continued to live a more amphibious and sedentary life stayed close to water, utilizing camouflage and their lures to hunt prey in competition with small amphibians inhabiting the hollows. Most species specialized in running down prey lost their lure entirely, filling small to medium grazers and predators niches. Those specializing in climbing and arboreal life developed long, prehensile tails to help them navigate their environment. A handful of these species have colonized Atterra’s surface to varying degrees. Due to terrestrial anglerfish having four legs instead of three like the terrestrial mudskippers, terrestrial anglers can reach larger sizes on average than terrestrial mudskippers. With the average height of many terrestrial anglerfish species being waist to chest height of most humans.
Anatomy/ Physiology:
Terrestrial anglerfish have four-chambered hearts like birds, mammals, and other terrestrial teleost fish. The hyoid bone and inner ear bones are formed from the gill arches of the terrestrial anglerfish; the gill arches ossifying and attaching to the back of the lower jaw to form the ear bones of the animal. Like terrestrial mudskippers, the terrestrial anglerfish has four nostrils, the two on the end of their snout, and the two under their back legs evolved from their gill openings, which were used in the same way as frogfish as a means of jet propulsion by gulping in water through the mouth and pushing it out through their gill openings.
Like in other terrestrial teleost fish, the gill covers form into an outer ear to help it detect sounds. Since anglerfish devour prey through suction feeding, terrestrial anglerfish adapted their jaws to hunt prey on land efficiently. An extra jawbone attached from the back of the bottom jaw and the temple (as seen in some anglerfish, such as monkfish) enables terrestrial anglerfish to extend their jaws forward in the same way sharks can. Once extended, the top jaw swings downwards to shut the jaw to grab its prey. The jaws are then retracted as the extra jawbone is pulled back into its resting position. To aid in prey capture, some terrestrial anglerfish also possess an extendable tongue like a frog or chameleon to secure prey and pull it into the animal's jaws.
Specializations:
Species that have lost their lure use their two remaining dorsal spines for display and as a signifier of their health to fellow competitors and possible mates. The aboral species of terrestrial anglers use their long prehensile tails to grip tree branches and fungal towers as a fifth limb. Some species even use their tails, like boa constrictors, to constrict their prey.

All about Piggies! (Mobile edition!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Entelodont are hypothesized to be the predecessor to all of the pig-types in the Minecraft universe. The Entelodont are based off the Entelodontidae, which were a real thing in this world! (Wikipedia link)
Not much is known about the Sarolin other than they are a race that evolved underground. They evolved large ears and a disadvantage to seeing in the dark, resorting to echolocation similarly to bats. It is theorized that the Sculk drove them out of the Ancient Cities like a plague, though there is currently nothing to prove this. It has been presumed the Sarolin created the Wardens, while others have theorized the Sarolin have turned into Wardens, or that Wardens evolved separately to protect the Sculk. The Sarolin were thought to be completely extinct prior to the discovery of Kheroc. It is currently unknown how Kheroc has lived for supposedly thousands of years, nor is it clear if the Sarolin have always looked like this or if this is unique to her.
Tumblr media
The Eirlin are speculative, as no pig species within the End have formed their own civilizations.
Tusklins are from Alex’s Mobs.
Tumblr media
Enderbara are technically from the Habitable End Mod - though we conceptualized lore with @leaf4e for new design, which they textured (As seen below). The Enderbara and Enderwarthogs evolved separately from Endermen taking Pigs to the End and interspecies hybridization eventually resulting in the two.
Enderbara have shells to protect from projectiles and predators, heavy rock-like shelling on their feet to keep them from floating away in the low gravity of the End, and multiple eyes to help them detect predators and see in the darkness of the End.
Tumblr media
Enderwarthogs are from AdventureZ.
Tumblr media
Boarlins and their many variants - Illagers, Zombie Boarlins, Ravagers, Iron Constructs, etc - come from the Village of Pigs resource pack.
Tumblr media
Phygs (left) and Taegore (right) are from the Aether mod[s].
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was previously speculated that there was some sort of cataclysmic event in the Overworld. This cataclysm caused some Pigs to turn into Creepers. In search of trying to solve this event, Boarlins unintentionally created an undead virus - in turn creating Skeletons and Zombies.
Many Boarlins went to the Nether in search for a cure to the virus, unintentionally spreading it there. Their travels brought many resources with them, including various animals such as the Ghellies for transportation and pigs for food, and building material in hopes of long-term residence and research. Among these animals, Pigs lasted the longest due to being omnivores. The Ghellies, utilized for transportation, were forced to adapt to the hot climates of the nether, becoming the Ghasts we know today. Feral after centuries of being abandoned by those who brought them, Ghasts have proven nearly impossible to domesticate. There are some recorded cases of success, but they are too few to provide any reliable insight into replication. Much like the Ghasts, the Pigs left to their own on the Nether became feral and territorial, becoming the Hoglins we're familiar with.
These travelers no longer saw the point in returning to the overworld due to both dimensions having the virus and the Nether being deemed the safer of the two, and eventually evolved into Piglins.
This information has now been updated upon further research:
The Blight is a microorganism that comes from the Aether after the Sun Spirit was killed, returning Night to the Aether. It rapidly infects its host and spreads to their offspring, resulting in a sped up evolution process toward violent tendencies. The Blight, however, is weak to Sunlight exposure, and will kill its host when exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
When the Blight spread throughout the Aether upon the Sun Spirit's death, it was brought into the Overworld - rapidly spreading and evolving. The Blight is ultimately the cause for the evolution of Creepers, as well as: Zombies, Husks, Drowned, Skeletons, Strays, Bogged, Zoglins, Zombified Boarlins, Zombified Piglins, and is partially responsible for the creation of Wither Skeletons.
Whilst the Boarlins in the overworld discovered a temporary cure for the Blight with Golden Apples and Weakness potions, the Piglins were less successful. It is speculated their attempts at curing their Zombified brethren resulted in the Wither Skeletons as the Blight evolved and mutated, and in turn the Wither.

Common Myths About Underground Water Leaks Busted
Most property damage occurs when there are leaks from underground pipes. Delays in such repairs can often be due to deprivation of the hard fallacy of rumours. Let's bust the most common myths about underground leaks and equip you to deal with them better.
Tumblr media
Myth 1: Underground Water Leaks Are Always Visible.
Most people have the misconception that underground water becomes visible when leaks occur. They usually consider surface puddles or wet spots as the first signs. Nevertheless, many water leaks go unnoticed from week to month because they are deep under the surface, or even a concrete layer lies on it. Therefore, it becomes very important to hire the service of an underground water leak detection company. It uses the latest technology to detect underground water leakages and minimize their damage.
Myth 2: DIY Detection is Just as Effective
Most homeowners believe their basic tools can easily detect leakages in their houses or simply rely on observing water-by-be-water usage. However, spotting these simple leakages in water bills does not mean you can isolate them accurately. Accurate detection leaves this to your leak detection experts. Professional underground water leak detection services employ equipment such as acoustic listening devices, ground-penetrating radar, and thermal imaging for detecting even the smallest leak without unnecessary digging.
Myth 3: Underground Leaks Don't Require Urgent Attention
The above myth is another critical one. Underground leaks can wait indefinitely before they become severe. The consequences can damage structures like the foundation and cause sinkholes and an inflated water bill. Early detection and repair will save you from costly repairs and ensure your property's safety.
Myth 4: All Detection Services Are the Same
The truth is that not all detection companies are the same. Some still have old modalities, which means doing unnecessary digging and destruction within your property. Use new, non-invasive techniques for underground water leak detection to minimize property damage and accurate results.
Myth 5: Underground Storage Tanks Aren't Prone to Leaks
Most property owners with underground storage tanks think these tanks are all leak-proof. But in reality, corrosion, wear and tear, and improper installation can even lead to leakages with soil and water quality contamination. An underground storage tank locate service will help you identify potential problems with your tank and even help to prevent leaks long before they happen.
Myth 6: Repairs are Generally Expensive.
Fixing underground leaks may seem like a hefty expense, but the costs are far less than the damage they may accrue if left unattended. Proactive professional services save you costs from future larger problems regarding either structural damage or environmental contamination.
Tumblr media
Summary
Addressing underground leaks in homes early and constructively is important when protecting your property and wallet. This myth-busting exercise can play such a role in helping you make informed choices. So do not hesitate to seek help from experts who offer reliable underground water leak detection services and underground storage tank locate services for this case if you think there might be a leak.
Insurance coverage with C-N-I locates assures maximum coverage, and while professionals do their best in such incidences, your property will be safe from all possible unanticipated damages. The combination of professional help with insurance coverage will ensure your home and assets are safe from any potential underground leak risks.

COOL ZOOLOGY STORIES OF 2023
Happy New Year! At the start of 2022 I put together a list of some cool zoology-related news stories from 2021, and after... kind of forgetting to put a list together for 2022, I wanted to do the same for 2023. Here are some of my favourite animal-related news stories from the past year (plus one plant-related story, as a treat.)
Tumblr media
An elusive little mammal was spotted for the first time in nearly a century
Species Concerned: De Winton's Golden Mole (Cryptochloris wintoni)
Family: Golden Mole Family (Chrysochloridae)
Source(s): here and here
A small, superficially mole-like animal seemingly found only in the area around Port Nolloth, South Africa, De Winton’s Golden Mole has long been feared to be extinct due to a total lack of confirmed sightings since 1937. This changed in November of 2023, when (after years of extensive searching) a De Winton’s Golden Mole was found alive for the first time in 87 years, and was photographed for the first time ever.
Though similar to moles in both appearance and behaviour, golden moles are actually part of a separate and only distantly related group of mammals known as Afrosoricidans (alongside tenrecs and otter shrews) that have independently developed mole-like bodies to exploit a similar ecological niche – with massive, shovel-like front paws, short limbs, protective “shields” of toughened skin on their heads and non-functional eyes covered by skin to protect them from irritation, members of this family are adapted to burrowing, and in most cases will spend their entire lives underground unless disturbed. Due to the scarcity of sightings very little is known about the biology of De Winton’s Golden Mole, but based on its sandy coastal habitat and the behaviours of its closest relative, the Van Zyl’s Golden Mole (Cryptochloris zyli) it is likely that members of this species live solitary lives and use their digging abilities to “swim” through sand, preying on insects and small vertebrates which they detect using unique structures in their inner ears that are highly sensitive to vibration.
In addition to conventional habitat surveys within De Winton’s Golden Mole’s presumed range, the team responsible for this species’ rediscovery also utilized several newer or more unusual strategies to search for their focal missing mammal, including thermal imaging to detect underground body heat and the testing of soil and sand in the area for eDNA (tiny amounts of genetic material that organisms leave in water, soil and on other surfaces, giving insight into which species are found in an area without having to actually spot them.)

An "ancient plant" turned out to be a baby turtle
Species Concerned: "Turtwig" Cretaceous Turtle
Family: Unknown
Source(s): Here and Here
In 2003, a priest and fossil collector named Gustavo Huertas identified what he believed to be the fossilised remains of a tiny plant of the extinct genus Sphenophyllum in cretaceous-era rocks near Villa de Leyva, Columbia, and named the new species Sphenophyllum colombianum. Huertas' find was unusual in that it dated to the early Cretaceous period (making it over 100 million years younger than other Sphenophyllum species, the last of which are believed to have gone extinct in the late Triassic period,) and it was the fossil's unusual age that drew the attention of Fabiany Herrera, a curator of plant fossils at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, USA and Héctor Palma-Castro, his student. After taking an interest in the fossil the two travelled to the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Columbia where the fossil was held in order to inspect it, and after realising that its features were unlike other Sphenophyllum species and consulting a vertebrate palaeontologist, Edwin-Alberto Cadena, they eventually came to realise that what Huertas had found was not a Sphenophyllum species, or event a plant - what had originally been interpreted as the stems and leaves of a plant were actually the ribs of a very small, and likely very young, prehistoric turtle.
The ribs of turtles are located on the upper surface of their shells, where they form a sort of "roof" that strengthens the shell's outer carapace. Newly hatched turtles have fragile bones and shells that are easily broken beyond recognition during fossilization, so finding the well-preserved remains of a young turtle (estimated to be less than 1 year old when its bones were buried) is very rare. The discovery of the true identity of "Sphenophyllum colombianum" was published (here) in early December 2023, and as such the newly discovered turtle fossil has yet to be given a new name. Instead, it has been affectionately dubbed "Turtwig", after the half-plant-half-turtle gen 4 starter Pokemon, until it can be formally reclassified.

The Indochinese Green Magpie became the Photo Ark's 14,000th species
Species Concerned: Indochinese Green Magpie (Cissa hypoleuca)
Family: Crow Family (Corvidae)
Source: Here
The National Geographic Photo Ark is an ambitious project led by Canadian photographer Joel Sartore which aims to photograph every species held in captivity worldwide, providing high-quality images of often relatively obscure species and raising awareness of each species involved. In 2021 the Arabian Cobra became the 12,000th species added to the ark, in 2022 the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper became the 13,000th, and as of May 2023 the Indochinese Green Magpie has become the 14,000th species Sartore and his team have photographed.
Unlike the vast majority of crow species, the 4 species in the genus Cissa, known collectively as green magpies, are brightly coloured, largely carnivorous birds with vivid green feathers and bright red beaks and feet which are thought to aid them in camouflaging against the leaves and bark of the dense, humid forests they typically inhabit. The Indochinese Green Magpie, which is found in densely forested areas from central China to southern Cambodia, is one of the most common green magpie species, but is still believed to be experiencing a decline in population size due to the intense demand for members of this species in the illegal wildlife trade, both for their feathers and to be kept as illegal pets. The model for Sartore's photo, a female named Jolie, was herself found in a suitcase that was intercepted while being smuggled through the Los Angeles International Airport, and is now kept Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The team behind the Photo Ark have expressed hopes that Jolie's picture and story will help to raise awareness of the harmful effects of the illegal exotic pet trade and its prominence within the USA. On a happier note, the photo also seems to show that Jolie is now doing well - green magpies kept in captivity have been known to sometimes take on a duller colouration due to a lack of carotenoids in their diet, so her natural green feathers are an indicator of good health.

A very rare, very weird plant was rediscovered after 30 years
Species Concerned: Thismia kobensis
Family: Burmannia Family (Burmanniaceae)
Source(s): Here, here and here
In 1992, a bizarre-looking plant was found growing near the city of Kobe in Japan; pale and partially transparent without any leaves or chlorophyll, it was a member of the genus Thismia and was notable for being found further north than any other Asian species in the genus to date. A single plant was collected and taken to the Museum of Nature and Human Activities in the nearby city of Sanda, and in 2018 extensive examination of this single preserved plant led to it being determined to be a previously undocumented species, Thismia kobensis. This discovery led to surveys being dispatched to the area where the species was originally discovered in hopes of gathering additional samples and learning more about T. kobensis in the wild, but after surveys of the area were unable to find any remaining individuals, and following the discovery that the site from which the original sample had been collected had been converted into an industrial complex since the 1990s, the species was feared to have gone extinct. In February of 2023, a team of researchers led by Kobe University's Professor Kenji Suetsugu announced the first documented sighting of Thismia kobensis in 31 years, having found a small population growing in Sanda, not far from the museum that holds what had long been the only known specimen of the species and roughly 30km (18.6 miles) from the site at which the species was originally discovered. Their publication can be read here.
Thismia species, also known as fairy lanterns, are almost alien-looking plants that, as mentioned previously, lack chlorophyll and do not carry out photosynthesis, instead gaining nutrients parasitically by connecting their roots to the hyphae of typically mutualistic fungi and extracting nutrients from both the fungus itself and from any other plants that it has connected to (making it a mycoheteroph, much like the slightly better-known ghost plant/ghost pipes.) This unusual lifestyle likely developed as an adaptation to allow members of this genus to survive in forests with dense canopies that block out sunlight, but also makes them highly sensitive to environmental change - in order for an area to support a healthy population of Thismia kobensis, it must also support healthy trees and healthy soil fungi. As the original preserved 1992 specimen of T. kobensis was long dead and slightly damaged, its rediscovery also allowed Suetsugu's team to further study the species, leading to a surprising conclusion - genetically and anatomically, Thismia kobensis seems to have more in common with Thismia americana (the only known North American species of Thismia, which was last sighted in 1916 and is similarly feared extinct) than to any other Asian Thismia, possibly suggesting that T. kobensis and T. americana are descended from common ancestors that spread either from Asia to the Americas or vice versa during a time when their ranges were connected by a land bridge.

Important progress was made in saving the Sumatran Rhinoceros
Species Concerned: Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)
Family: Rhinoceros Family (Rhinocerotidae)
Sources: Here and here
Distinguished from the other 4 rhinoceros species by its relatively small size, 2 horns and short black fur (which is barely present in adults, but very prominent in calves) the Sumatran Rhinoceros is one of the rarest mammals on earth, with an estimated population size of roughly 30-80 individuals. Having had its numbers drastically reduced by poaching, habitat loss and extreme weather events, the species is now threatened by its own small population size - found only in tiny scattered populations across Sumatra and Borneo, it is now extremely difficult for wild members of this species to find mates, and where mating does occur such a small population size considerably limits genetic diversity, increasing the risk of calves being born with health complications. To combat this numerous efforts to breed Sumatran Rhinoceroses in captivity have been developed, and as of November of 2023 the results have been promising; last year saw the birth of 2 Sumatran Rhinoceros calves at the Way Kambas National Park in Lampung, Sumatra.
The youngest of 2023's calves, a male, is the son of a female named Delilah who was herself the second calf to have ever been born at the park's Sumatran Rhinoceros Sanctuary (a site where members of this species are cared for and protected from illegal poaching while breeding.) This marks the first-ever instance of a captive-born Sumatran Rhinoceros giving birth, and therefore represents a key step in establishing a healthy captive breeding population of Sumatran Rhinoceroses to help preserve and increase the genetic diversity of wild populations. The calf's father, named Harapan, was born in Cincinnati Zoo in the USA, and it is hoped that the careful incorporation of the handful of Sumatran Rhinoceroses held in zoos into wild breeding programs can further help to increase the species' genetic diversity in the future. While extensive action is still needed for the Sumatran Rhinoceros to be saved, the park's work this year represents a significant step towards the species' conservation.

Honestly, I feel like Fontaine has been really bad. Even by Genshin's nonexistent standards.
Outside of Furina's backstory, the writing is a step down from Sumeru instead of a step up, with 90% of the first 4 acts being filler and the handling of the terrible government being even worse than previous nations (bc the horrifying justice system would look bad on Furina, Focalors, Neuvillette, Clorinde, Chevreuse, Sigewinne, and Wriothesly if we admitted that it was bad). It's so bad that it falls apart if you know anything about human rights, slavery in prisons, capitalism, police corruption, or even the basic rules of detective fiction, when it comes to the first 2 acts.
And on top of that, everything about the oceanids were completely retconned and ignored...even though some of that retconned lore was given to us an update before Fontaine was released. Instead, oceanid lore was completely changed, used to make Neuvillette look cool, and then forgotten about after the main act except for like...1 world questline. That has nothing to do with playable characters. Even though it's super important to the story. Aka the npc problem also continues.
The underwater areas are cool, but the whole nation is about as empty and boring as the desert. There are a few highlights, but that's it. And not only is it significantly smaller than Sumeru for no reason, but it was shafted just to make ANOTHER addition to Liyue's map, which is bigger than Dragonspine, Chasm's Maw, and Stormterrors Lair combined. And it also doesn't utilize most of the giant space it has. We got our first separate, underground map since Inazuma, but it's even smaller than Enkanomiya, there's nothing interesting that I've found so far, and the map is hard to look at because of the way they make maps now.
Speaking of, they seriously thought that adding mini underground maps to the normal map was enough compensation for them making hard to navigate caves to let them get away with continuing to do that?? Why not just stop making them?? Is this not one of the reasons why your normal map looks so boring??
While Cyno suddenly got a 2nd story quest (which should've been his only one with how useless the 1st one was, but whatever), for the first time since the beta(?), the archon character didn't get 2 story quests. They could've chosen to give neither Furina or Neuvi a 2nd quest, give one of then a 2nd quest, or give both of them a 2nd quest. They went with the laziest option.
Instead, our 2nd weekly boss was Arlecchino in her own quest. This was honestly the first time I felt disappointed with a weekly boss. It had nothing that special about it gameplay-wise, and Arlecchino's boss form looks weird. It's just the barebones first part and the cool boss form last part. No big, unique mechanics that change how you fight it, no in between stage, no switching back and forth between the stages. Nothing.
Just like Inazuma, Fontaine wasn't allowed it's own Traveler quest. Instead, Bedtime Story was a continuation of Caribert that could've been released during Sumeru, as well as a lore dump and empty reassurance that the next Traveler quest will finally, actually start an actual Abyss Order + Dain plot. Not right now though. And the ending is literally a MLB identity reveal fakeout episode.
To make the obvious laziness even worse, this is the first time since interludes were introduced that we haven't gotten a yearly Interlude. That's ONE single act quest! There's no reason why you couldn't have made one! Fontaine has NO other storylines for the playable characters besides the main quest, despite all the npc storylines!
Additionally, while this is the first time we've gotten 5 skins per year instead of 4, it's also the first time we've been given a skin without it being used in an event. Which is...weird. And that's without mentioning how bad Ganyu, Shenhe, and Nilou's skins are imo.
I swear, the only good thing that has happened is that Mondstadt has been further solidified as The Witch Nation. And again, the underwater stuff is cool.

Ground Penetrating Radar Survey in Delhi: A Reliable Solution for Subsurface Exploration
In today’s rapidly growing world, accurate subsurface investigation plays a crucial role in various industries. Whether it's for construction, infrastructure development, or environmental research, knowing what lies beneath the surface is vital for making informed decisions. A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi offers a non-invasive, efficient, and reliable way to explore subsurface conditions. From detecting underground utilities to identifying structural issues, GPR provides real-time, detailed data for a range of applications.
What is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)?
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an advanced technology that uses electromagnetic waves to scan and map the subsurface. A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi sends high-frequency radio waves into the ground. These waves bounce back when they hit an object or material with different properties, such as utilities, voids, or rocks. The reflected signals are recorded and processed to create a detailed image of the subsurface, allowing professionals to assess the underground structure without excavation.
This method is highly effective in detecting underground utilities, voids, and even structural abnormalities. It's a valuable tool for industries such as construction, archaeology, and environmental studies, providing precise data while minimizing disruption to the site.
Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar Survey
Utility Mapping and Detection: One of the most common uses of a ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is utility mapping. Before beginning any construction or excavation project, it is essential to know where underground utilities are located to prevent accidental damage. GPR can accurately detect a variety of utilities such as water pipes, electrical cables, gas lines, and sewer systems. This ensures the safety and smooth progression of construction projects by preventing costly mistakes.
Cavity Detection: Another important application of a ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is cavity detection. Underground voids or cavities can pose a serious risk to the stability of a structure or project site. These voids can form due to erosion, mining, or natural processes and may go unnoticed without proper detection. GPR is highly effective in locating these subsurface cavities, which allows engineers to take preventive measures before any damage occurs.
Structural Integrity Assessment: GPR is commonly used for structural assessments, particularly for concrete structures such as roads, bridges, and buildings. A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi can be used to examine the condition of concrete, detect cracks, delamination, or corrosion, and assess the placement of rebar. By performing these inspections, engineers can ensure the safety and integrity of existing structures, preventing costly repairs and ensuring long-term durability.
Archaeological Investigations: In archaeology, a ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is a non-invasive method used to locate buried structures, artifacts, and remains. This technique is highly beneficial for preserving historical sites, as it allows archaeologists to explore without the need for excavation. By using GPR, archaeologists can gather valuable data on the location of buried objects and determine where further digging may be needed.
Environmental Studies: GPR is also used in environmental studies to assess the condition of the land, identify contaminants, and locate buried waste or landfills. A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi can help environmental engineers identify areas that require remediation and guide cleanup efforts without disturbing the environment. The ability to gather accurate subsurface data is crucial for environmental safety and monitoring.
Why Choose Ground Penetrating Radar Survey in Delhi?
There are several reasons why the ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is becoming the preferred method for subsurface exploration:
Non-Invasive Technique: One of the key benefits of GPR is that it is non-invasive, meaning it doesn’t require excavation or disturbing the ground. This makes it an environmentally friendly and efficient method for obtaining subsurface data without disrupting the site.
Real-Time Data: The ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi provides real-time results, allowing professionals to interpret data immediately. This quick turnaround helps with faster decision-making and reduces project delays, which is especially important in industries like construction and infrastructure.
Accurate and Detailed Results: GPR offers highly accurate and detailed images of the subsurface, providing valuable insights into what lies beneath the surface. The data collected can be used to assess the presence of utilities, voids, or other underground structures, allowing professionals to plan projects more effectively.
Versatility: A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi can be used in various environments, from urban areas to remote locations. It works on a range of surfaces including concrete, asphalt, soil, and rock, making it a versatile tool for many industries.
Cost-Effective: Since GPR eliminates the need for extensive excavation, it significantly reduces the cost and time associated with traditional survey methods. This makes it an affordable option for projects of all sizes.
How Does a Ground Penetrating Radar Survey Work?
The process of conducting a ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is straightforward, though it requires trained professionals to ensure accurate results:
Site Preparation: The first step involves assessing the survey site. The ground conditions, such as soil type and surface materials, are evaluated to determine the best approach for the GPR survey.
Survey Setup: Once the site has been assessed, the GPR equipment is set up. This can involve either handheld devices or larger vehicle-mounted systems, depending on the size of the area to be surveyed.
Data Collection: The GPR unit sends electromagnetic pulses into the ground. These pulses travel through the subsurface and reflect back when they encounter materials with different densities, such as utilities or geological layers. The system records the reflected signals.
Data Analysis: The collected data is then processed to generate detailed images of the subsurface. This data is interpreted by professionals to identify any anomalies, such as utilities, voids, or other structures.
Report Creation: After analyzing the data, a detailed report is generated, including the findings and recommendations. This report can be used for further planning and decision-making.
Conclusion
A ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is an invaluable tool for anyone involved in construction, archaeology, environmental studies, or any project that requires a detailed understanding of subsurface conditions. It offers an accurate, non-invasive, and cost-effective way to explore what lies beneath the surface. Whether you need to detect utilities, locate voids, assess structural integrity, or conduct archaeological investigations, GPR provides reliable and timely data that helps professionals make informed decisions.
With its ability to provide real-time data and its versatility across different applications, the ground penetrating radar survey in Delhi is the go-to solution for anyone needing a thorough, efficient, and safe subsurface investigation. If you are planning any project that involves underground exploration, a GPR survey is the best way to proceed with confidence.

Prompt: create a horror movie concept about the discovery of a location with all the hallmarks of "This is not a place of honor". Humans being humans, the discoverers proceed to ignore the warning to their own doom even though one of them actually recognizes the warning for what it is.
Title: Silent Screams
Tagline: The danger is still present in your time, as it was in ours
Logline: An ambitious drilling expedition in the remote Siberian wilderness unearths a chilling monument - a silent monolith etched with cryptic warnings, leading to a horrifying discovery that defies comprehension.
Characters:
Dr. Evelyn Wright: A brilliant but jaded archaeologist haunted by a past excavation gone wrong. She recognizes the monolith's structure and symbols as a long-term warning system, similar to those used for nuclear waste sites.
Dr. Peter Vance: The ambitious head of the drilling expedition, driven by a thirst for scientific discovery and potential financial rewards. He dismisses Evelyn's concerns about the monolith.
Dimitri "Dimitriy" Petrov: A stoic and experienced field leader, torn between his loyalty to Dr. Vance and his growing unease about the unsettling discoveries.
