I saw a post go by about how rules carry an implicit threat of violence. I think my thoughts on the matter are a tangent that would constitute a derail of the point of that post, so I'm starting a new one instead.
I believe "rules" work better as parameters for our own decision making, rather than walls designed for other people to slam into.
I was raised by computer engineers, so I tend to think about decision making in terms of pseudocode:
IF [situation I find myself in] THEN [known options for dealing with this situation] ELSE [best guess according to general default understanding]
as opposed to just signs everywhere that say
NO
Okay, yeah, sometimes we do actually need those boundary signs.
"No, really, it's not okay for you to hurt me."
Mostly, though, what we're really looking for when we make up all these rules-that-are-walls is a map for navigating the overwhelming territory of reality.
The thing is, people get confused and frustrated and scared and angry when they realize the map they have doesn't match the territory they find themselves in and now they don't know how they're supposed to navigate it. The knee-jerk impulse is "This situation wasn't accounted for in my options, therefore this situation is not allowed to exist".
But deciding there shouldn't be something in the territory because it's not on the map is a fundamental error in map use.
By definition, if the map and territory differ, it is always the map that needs to change.*
* If it's the territory that needs to change, that's not a map, it's a blueprint!

please i love you i'm begging you bring back suspension of disbelief bring back trusting the audience like. i cannot handle any more dialogue that sounds like a legal document. "hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!
do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

i think theres this idea in the general public that the "best" fanfic gets turned into real books like 50 shades of grey. but the truth is that the best fanfic can never be published as an actual book because its intricately woven into the canon material so its inseparable even if you change the names

white americans when you tell them that the idea of climate change as an impending disaster is a reductive first world perspective because it’s a tangible reality for many in the global south already:

Photographers all know about polarizing filters. They remove reflections off the surfaces of objects. We use them to see into water or windows that are obscured by those reflections. But anything with an even slightly glossy surface has a layer of reflection on top. So if you have a shiny green plant, it can remove the shiny and reveal a very saturated green underneath. Polarizers also remove a lot of scattered and reflected light from the sky. Which reveals a deep blue color you didn't even know was there.
Here is a photo I took of my circular polarizer.
Tumblr media
And the first thing I noticed when walking outside during the eclipse was the color of everything was more saturated, just like in that circle. Apparently, an eclipse significantly reduces polarized light and I got this creepy feeling because I was only ever used to seeing the world like that through the viewfinder of my camera.
The other thing I noticed was my outdoor lights. I leave them on all the time because I never remember to turn them on at night. And usually the sun will render them barely visible during the day. On a very sunny day they almost look like they are off.
Tumblr media
But you can clearly see they are shining and even flaring the camera during the eclipse.
Our eyes adjust to lighting changes very well so it was hard to tell how much dimmer things were, but that is a good indication. I took this photo a few minutes ago and you can see how dim the lights appear after the moon has fucked off.
Tumblr media
I did a calculation using the exposure settings between these two photos. The non-eclipse photo has 7 f-stops more light. That is 128 times or 12,700% more light.
A partial Pringle eclipse cut the sun's light by 99.2% and somehow our eyes adjusted to make it seem like a normal sunny day (with weird ass saturated colors).

Periodically, there is an Adult-Making of some kind in my community, a coming-of-age ritual. In my own faith tradition, that involves passing a libation around and giving each person a turn to offer blessings, praise, and advice.
My piece of advice is consistently this:
Adulthood does NOT mean you are now responsible for meeting all your own needs, alone. Adulthood means you are responsible for overtly arranging for your needs to be met in cooperation with the people around you.
That means proactively asking for help, writing that Advanced Medical Directive,  doing favors for friends so you’re in good standing when you need a favor yourself, and otherwise engaging with community, not sucking it up and doing without anything you can’t do alone.
Up until now, as a child, many of your needs were being met automatically by the arrangement of the adults around you, often where you couldn’t even see that happening. That’s a parent’s job. That you are here tells me it was well enough done, though no doubt imperfectly. Over time, until now, you’ve learned more about what your needs are, and how to meet more of them on your own, and get help with others.
Now you will be asked to take on more of that than before. In this time between your community adult-making and becoming a legal adult, this is your opportunity to experiment, to make mistakes in trying out your adulting skills in relative safety, while the adults around you can still protect you from the worst of the consequences. But we won’t protect you from all of them, because then you won’t learn.
As a fellow adult, we can’t protect you from those consequences anymore, but we can help you weather them. That’s why community exists. Humans are social animals. Take care of your friends and family and let them take care of you, and we will all make it through life together.

Fuck-or-die sex pollen fic, where Ghost insists on being the one to fuck you and help you through the toxin.
The others think it's because he has a thing for you (he does), but only Price really understands why Ghost is volunteering. Because there was a time where Ghost also didn't have a say in whether or not someone was inside him, where his choice was also 'be fucked, or die'.
And at least if it's Ghost fucking you, he can make sure that it's as gentle and kind as you deserve. He can make sure it doesn't hurt, that it feels good, that you're given all the respect and dignity possible. You can't consent right now, but he's going to ensure you aren't traumatized like he was
And if he can do this for you, and be gentle, and kind, it proves that he really hasn't become who Roba wanted him to be, right?
