Suguru could see Satoru's lips moving, long legs bent at the knees and yet stretched out under the table, comfortable. He waved the wooden spoon for his hot chocolate around as he gestured while speaking, but Suguru couldn't hear a single word of what he was saying. 

Clattering of cutlery and pulling of chairs, cacophony of voices that had no right sounding so cheerful filled his ears instead, subsumed the voice he wished he could hear.

He smiled at him placidly, though, following along but not quite. Satoru asked him to pass him the sugar cubes, and somehow he registered the petition as his body automatically moved to push the little plate across the table towards him with the very tips of his fingers, as though he didn't want to touch it.

He didn't.

His own drink laid untouched in front of him, going colder by the second. Suguru had just ordered whatever, feeling like he had to, but he really had no intention of drinking it. He had no intention of touching anything, and his arms were kept stiffly to his sides with his hands over his lap. He only agreed to these meet ups to see his best friend — ex best friend ? His one and only —, but he really, truly did loathe coming to these places and surround himself by monkeys.

Satoru was just that important.

« You have squirty cream on your nose, » he said, interrupting whatever it was the other was in the middle of telling him. Something about Megumi's dog eating his homework.

And just as he reached over to offer Satoru a napkin, someone bumped into his arm as they were leaving the shop. Had he not reacted as quickly as he did to hold his drink, he would've knocked it over.

Disgust quickly flared up in him, lips curling and knuckles turning white as he crumpled up the napkin he was about to offer into a ball in his fist. The faceless monkey turned to spit a quick, empty ‘sorry,’ and Suguru felt the energy of one of his cursed spirits tingling at his fingertips. He could do it so quickly, and no one would even know what happened.

But Satoru's gaze was piercing. A flick of his eyes to meet the other's bright blue over the rim of his glasses, and he passed the balled up napkin into his other hand to pluck out a new one from the holder and pass it over to his... friend.

It is extremely convenient that they never state the person’s gender. The most common phrase that the victim says before their demise is “Oh, it’s you”!

Drake stared at the small made sandwich in his hands. It was nice enough the shopkeepers had made it for free for him. Drake hasn't ate in a couple days. His stomach painfully growled in protest to his hesitance to food. It's a simple sandwich with Swiss cheese, some lettuce, tomato and French bread. His leg bounces up and down at the hunger pinning him wanting him to bite his teeth into the food. But, he hasn't been sleeping well. Not since that day. Not since he was essentially going to be raised for food. Not since he... he lost his horns.

"Mmmph.. M'so hungry.. buh, I don' wanna eat." The ten year old murmured to himself. It would be SUCH a waste if he didn't eat. It would be such a rudeness to the folks who made him the sandwich. Drake looked scrawny and terrible. He sets the sandwich down with the wrapper on the bottom keeping it off of the stairs. He buried his face into his knees. "Stupid... stupid brain."

Rayn had always felt a particular sense of difficulty when it came to operating in the Black Market. She knew that it was necessity - someone had to maintain some kind of order and try to help the poor herbivores that ended up getting dragged into it against their will. But that didn’t make her job anymore uncomfortable. It wasn’t the sight of blood and gore that turned her stomach. That had long stopped bothering her ever since she became a PI. No, it was the smell. Her greatest strength as a wolf was also her greatest enemy here. The ability to track any scent she caught a whiff of through the fog of roasting meat and steaming flesh.

It utterly revolted her. 

Once, the smell of meat made her salivate. Her jaws ached with a tingling need to bite down, to taste that which her instincts told her she craved most. But now... now all it made her feel was disgust. A lingering sense of utter disdain. The burning, roiling urge to gag. She supposed in some way, that was good. It meant she’d never have the urge to hurt an herbivore. It made it easier to disconnect with the sick fucks that pedaled them like they were nothing but products in a shipping line. It was certainly making this job easier.

Stalking along the shrubbery, following the moving van loaded with herbivores, blending into the shadows with sleek, swift moves so characteristic of a wolf. She was a silent, graceful shadow, pausing only when the vehicle came to a stop to peer over the edge of the bush. She counted a number of carnivores coming down to unload the truck. But her nose caught something else... She sniffed the air a bit, ears perking, eyes squinting at a shape in the bushes across the road from her.

Was that... a panda?

I think that Beastars is the best example of a fantasy media that started out as one explicit metaphor, but the world building itself was so nuanced and rich that it stands alone and very quickly outgrows the original metaphor.

Like Beastars could first be seen as racial and cultural minorities in a mono ethnic Japan, but then there’s the growth suppressants, interspecies families, criminal records, dietary needs, genetic behavioral traits, accessibility in architecture and fashion, environmental needs, and don’t even get me started on ocean characters v land!

And then this metaphor for xenophobia can’t apply anymore, because it’s become so much more!! It’s become a malleable world where every “us v them” issue takes shape. Stigma against felons, disabilities, nature v nurture, racial bias, cultural differences, even how a society addresses scarcity!

Idk if y’all know of other worlds that have this “issue”, but I would be fascinated to hear about them
