Val had spent the better part of an afternoon at Mo and Eagan's place, and was therefore coming home a little drunk, a little high, and very blissed out without a single thought in her head about anything unpleasant at all. Absolutely no thoughts about calling in bodies in the forest or learning that her favourite teacher in high school had died or the futility of existence in a hell town. Nope. None of that.

"Saaaff," she called out while making her way to the kitchen, opening the refrigerator and looking for something to eat that would require little to no preparation. Which proved easier said than done. "You home? Did you find your friend? Is he okay?"

Do you have any recommendations for some good ole fashioned fantasy webcomics?

It's on a bit of a hiatus, but Ten Earth-Shattering Blows is maybe the best action webcomic out there right now. It's also an "ole-fashioned" sword and sorcery type of fantasy that you don't get as much of anymore, very 70s/80s fantasy with a bit of Mad Max energy.

Out-Of-Placers is also a low fantasy, with a heavy focus on the weird creatures that live in its world. It's also got some kind of record for being closest to a fetish comic without ever being a fetish comic

In the higher-magic front, Prequel is one of my all-time favorite webcomics. It's got the best magic system I have ever seen in anything (in that's it's perfectly tailored to the story being told instead of just being a cool system). The early parts are a bit edgy and it updates about one page every two years nowadays, but when it works it works.

Unfortunately some of it doesn't work, as it was a bit of casualty of the death of flash and no unofficial archive exists like for Homestuck.

Latchkey Kingdom is starting to move out of the "ole fashioned" fantasy, being less of a "Worldbuilding!"-focused comic and a bit heavier on the "Characters have fun adventures" style. But they're good adventures Brent.

Also some weird old dude makes a weird old comic, I guess. Might be worthwhile? I dunno

When he starts volunteering at an animal shelter (at Mike's insistence), Evan does end up making a friend there. His first friend post-Capture is a girl his age named Valerie, though she also goes by Val and Valley.

Evan likely spent several weeks not saying much at the shelter; he would only answer direct questions about the animals there and how to take care of them, if he knew what he was doing, etc etc. Social anxiety and the belief that they would eventually throw him out kept him from saying too much about himself, and that plus his scars made everyone think of him as a bit of an oddball.

Valerie lives on a farm of some kind, and even if he never said much, he liked listening to her talk about farming stuff, especially about the animals she and her family takes care of, whether she was talking directly to him or he was just eavesdropping on her talking to other people (Ev does a lot of eavesdropping. not that he thinks of it as eavesdropping when people are talking nearby where he just happens to be able to hear them; call that quiet kid syndrome).

After a few weeks, Evan works up the courage and curiosity to ask her a bit about the Farming Life. After that, their topics of conversation slowly branch out and get more and more personal. Ev practically loses his mind the first time she says he's free to come take a tour of the farm any time he wants (both from excitement and from the utter terror of how REAL this is now; gaining a friend also means gaining the ability to LOSE said friend, which is scarier to Ev than just never having a friend in the first place).

When Ev goes to Valerie's for the first time, he finds that Valerie, a handful of older siblings and niblings in their late 20s and early thirties, her grandparents, her parents, a couple aunts and uncles, and her younger brother all live there. Evan's a bit awestruck at that; he never realized that a family could be so big. Val's family also think that Evan is an oddball, for similar reasons that the other workers at the shelter think he is.

Valerie has at least one little sibling: a brother named Lucas. If Ev and Val are both 16/17 when they meet, then Lucas is ~12.

As a little brother himself, Evan goes out of way to tell Val that he doesn't mind when Val apologizes for Lucas getting curious and trying to tag along in everything Val and Evan do. Evan probably specifically asks Val if it's okay if they do things that Lucas can tag along in, because Evan doesn't want to put any kind of rift between Lucas and Val, and he definitely doesn't want to come between them.

(Valerie ofc doesn't hate Lucas, but getting embarrassed when your several-years-younger sibling keeps butting in between you and your friend is just Standard Older Sibling behaviour; Val stops getting embarrassed when she realizes Evan isn't annoyed by Lucas at all).

If Val ever found out about Evan's past, she'd be disturbed, yeah, but she'd also have a hard time reconciling the atrocities she hears about with the shy kid who went so far out of his way to treat her younger bro with such kindness, not to mention how gentle he is at the shelter and with the farm animals.

I'm debating whether Val might have any other younger siblings, but I think having a sibling younger than 12 around would be too big of a trigger for Evan tbh.

Finally got around to make fanart for The Wayhaven Chronicles! I present to you Detective-Agent Val Batra!!

As always thank you @kazukitnacho for your instructions❤️ it took a while to finish this off but hopefully I can add another post with a moodboard or Val's expressions or something.

Things of note:

I wanted to portray different moments in each of the books to better showcase Val as a character. Book I is when "Murphy" had her and Mason cornered; Book II is exposing her neck scar while at the carnival; Book III is at The Bidder's Nest.

My first round I played as they/them and picked the name Val because it sounded cool, and later started thinking about the Meaning™️ of it all. I decided to default with "Val" even when I started playing with she/her, so that's that.

Behind The Name says the surname "Batra" can be either Indian or Arabic, so I wanted to reflect that through her character design. In my mind (because I didn't comfirm it xd) Rebecca took Rook's surname, so Val's ethnic heritage is directly connected with her father's!

Regarding Rook, I think Val is the living image of the man -his face, his height, his built- but the complete opossite of him. Where he was charming, she's intimidating; where he was impulsive, she's cautious; where's he was friendly, she's stoic; and where he was stubborn, she's flexible. They both grapple with being funny but genuine. So basically Rook but with Rebecca's personality. However, as of Book III, I see Val becoming more and more like Rook in the future.

Talking about Rebecca, the first time I played and she was introduced, I was like, "oh- we're Jewish! Cool!" (shorsighted assumption in restrospective but bear with me) so I added that into the mix. I might elaborate more on this later but for now Val's favorite pastry to have with her coffee definitely is chocolate rugelach! Those things look so tasty!!

Textually she has black hair and grey eyes, but in my mind I see the grey being borderline black- like, dark as a tunnel. I really love the idea of light being reflected on/through them, and when putting it all together the black eyes/black hair are so so cool.

She dresses subdued or smart. She's into science and deduction, so she's a huge nerd who spends all her time doing research instead of combat training. She's a mind over heart, overall optimistic teamplayer, and she's always by the book.

My main influences for her design were Alba Flores and Saffron Vadher. So beautiful!

The font I used for Val's signature is Southam Demo Font and you can find it in 1001fonts.

(a general overview of what my muses have been up to post-event)

ARTEMIS has mostly been laying low. she was unaffected by the destruction in town, but the emotional damage was enough to convince her she needs to keep her head down, and she's been spending more time at home or at work. she's been feeling more and more lonely these days, and as a result has decided to stop using physical intimacy as a coping mechanism. long story short, she's a reformed hoe.

BELLA has been splitting her time between jerico, the cruz-duttons, and her friends, but has mostly been with jerico. his injuries have worried her enough that she's in full-time panic mode, but is doing her best to hide it from everyone. she's also formed a new friendship with jessie, one that she plans to hold near and dear. just don't tell other people that she has a heart, she'll probably kick you in the shins.

CAIN suffered an eye injury during the earthquake, and has been sentenced to wear an eye patch for the foreseeable (pun intended) future. not being with val during the ordeal freaked him out, and they have been shacking up at his place for the past couple of weeks. he really only leaves the house to go to work, but he's been rendered useless since he needs both eyeballs in order to do his job properly. just call him captain cain and slap a pet parrot on his shoulder.

EZRA did not attend the event, as the idea of being around that many people freaks her out. she happily stayed at home with her books, but often visits the large cracks in town to inspect them. can usually be found staying out dangerously close to dark, but thinks nothing of it.

HALLEY sustained sprains to both her wrist and shoulder, but is otherwise unscathed. she's still quite emotionally stunted when it comes to her family situation, but chooses to distract herself by visiting mo as often as possible. she also spends a lot of time with zarina and knightley, but still doesn't fully open up about her feelings. she also confessed her feelings for saffron and doesn't regret it, but the very thought of liking someone that much terrifies her.

LAVENDER hasn't been doing so great for the past couple of weeks. the disappearance of her mother has left her feeling like a shell of a human, and no matter how much she tries to distract herself, she just can't shake it. she spends most of her time at work or around town, no longer feeling like the commune is home. however, she has no plans of moving out, so she's stuck in a limbo state currently.

LEIA was beebopping around until the earthquake hit, and then she scrambled home. she visits draven and salem more often than not, wanting to make sure that draven is okay despite how heavy things are at home.

LUCA has been hovering around parker as often as they'll let him. he didn't attend the event, but seeing so many people grieving and recovering makes him tense, so he's been spending most of his time at work. he does regular check-ins with all the weirdlings, and while he wants to pretend that he has no feelings, his concern for his little siblings for all intents and purposes outweighs any façade that he tries to put on. basically, this is the best time to try and befriend him.

ONDINE has been trying to adjust to life in town rather than the commune. her life has been uprooted in every sense of the word, and it's caused a lot of trust issues to develop that weren't there previously. she's made quick friends with celia, a good thing considering she's been bringing joei to work with her, and has begun settling into the idea of being around people outside of the commune. ondine wants to believe that she and joei are safe now that there's some sort of separation from absinthe, but she can't help but feel paranoid that something bad will happen at the drop of a hat.

PRUDENCE is living in a current state of grief and sadness. the loss of minnie hit her hard, so she's been trying and failing to find as many distractions as possible. she hasn't been sleeping much (if at all), and the exhaustion is starting to show. conrad's offer for her to stay over at the greene residence whenever she wanted has been accepted every single day since the earthquake. she's started to feel like a burden as of late, but she continues to show up at mason and conrad's door on a daily basis. she worries that she's overstaying her welcome and is waiting patiently for the day when they kick her out. spends most of her time crying but has become a pro at hiding it.

SALEM sustained some pretty serious burns from her shoulder down on her left side. in the past couple weeks she's visited the clinic a few times to make sure she's taking proper care of herself, but unless she's there or at work, she's spent most of her time at home. though draven tries to fuss over her, salem still keeps her focus on him, trying not to think too hard about what happened to her. however, she plans to cover up for quite some time, not wanting to draw attention to her burns. garnering extra attention is too scary.

SARE has spent most of her time working. she tries to check in with spencer even more now, not wanting to feel like a helicopter sister, but also wanting to make sure her little sibling is doing okay. she's finally coming around to the idea of having a closer relationship with sycamore, but she's choosing to take that one step at a time.

VIOLET has been a worrying mess since the earthquake. she's been trying to give saffron space, but has done at least one check-in (even if it's met with a grouchy attitude). she knows how worried rex is and has been spending as much time with him as possible so she can keep both of their minds at ease.

WOLF has been coping with his injury by cracking jokes and annoying arty. his hand was crushed badly by debris, and he anticipates that it'll never gain its full functionality ever again. while it's been extremely painful to deal with, his aversion to going to doctors (and being touched, for that matter) has made him refuse to go to the clinic. he will continue to cope with humor.

WYLIE is doing the worst of them all. minnie's death has left her feeling like she barely exists, and she cries most of her days away. she has stopped going to work all together, and when she is around other people, she mostly stays quiet until someone addresses her. wylie feels like there's no point to life anymore, and has no idea how to channel any of her emotions. coping mechanisms don't currently exist, and being around her can only be described as 'miserable'. she misses the love of her life.

In the Interim . . .

Cassie cleaned up the farm, took stock of damages and what needs to be fixed. Felix moved in with her and together they’ve worked on rebuilding.

Claire brought chicken noodle soup to all the Romeros and checked in with them, but concentrated her efforts on visiting Duck to cook for him and help nurse him back to health.

Conrad stopped drinking atm so he could keep a better eye on Mason and Pru in the aftermath (esp Pru since Minnie was her friend). He offered for Pru to come spend the night at his and Mason’s whenever she needed.

Declan is helping with the rebuilding efforts as best and much as he can, considering his limitations. His hand tremors pop up more often than not but he’s kept a smile on his face and is doing his best to keep things light.

Jamie made meals for displaced people and those working on the rebuilding efforts during his time off from the diner (with Nick’s help). He’s since moved in to Clara’s place and has a meal ready for her when she gets home or brings her dinner when she has to stay at the ranger station. He’s doing his best to keep busy so he doesn’t worry too much, especially since anxiety can trigger his PTSD episodes.

Lucy and Roman made things official before she moved back into the commune. Roman tried to talk her out of it but they compromised with having a walkie on their persons to keep in touch despite the distance.

Natalie came out to the family as Briana’s daughter and has been visiting Bri during her recovery.

Nico is devastated at the loss of Minnie. It’s the first time he’s lost a family member and he’s not handling it well. He’s been spending most nights drinking and having sex with whoever will have him. He hasn’t been seen at the Commune since the earthquake except to check on Scout and let Xander know he’s still alive.

Quinn has been keeping an eye on potential followers and has been talking to Raziel in dark corners and behind closed doors.

Raziel moved into the commune and is helping Sandra as her second, quite magnanimously (while also keeping an eye on Sin and sexually teasing him at any chance they get).

Rose has been staying with Avery while they both recover from their injuries. She put Finch in charge of the Commune garden while she’s gone.

Saffron has been looking after Val as best they can and checking in with Roman more often than before. She’s doing her best to stay busy so she doesn’t have to think. They don’t regret their confession to Halley but is still kinda freaked out about it.

Star has been numbing herself as much as she can in the aftermath of Minnie’s death and had OD’d twice already. Despite being in no shape to do so, she’s been spending a lot of time with Spencer, attempting to help them out as best they can.

Will has been going between Eagan and Mila to look after them both as best he can, picking up extra clients so he can give the extra ration cards to Eagan while she’s unable to work herself.

Yuri has been helping where she can around town and just recently came across her brother, so now she’s gotta look out for him too.

Zoë is dead. Her belongings were given to Zain, including her laptop which has her notes, video, and interviews compiled for her documentary on Huntsville. What happens to all this research is up to Zain . . .

Scents in Starlight

ive noticed this super helpful list of scents for writers popping up on my feed a lot today and it got me curious about what specific scents I have mentioned so far in my SICSIG descriptions, and whether i was making good use of scent in my scenes to create a sense of atmosphere.

Turns out I have mentioned at least 80 different scents so far, so uhh,, i'd say im doin alright on that front!

Gabriel (Cas's POV)

Golden Boy always smelled like chamomile. Chamomile and licorice and vanilla ice cream with a hint of bourbon. Sweet, but not too sweet. It was a scent so delicately fragrant that every time Cas smelled it, it made him want to punch something. He was pretty sure it wasn’t a cologne or anything — Golden Boy just smelled like that. Not that Cas spent an inordinate amount of time sniffing Adalhard, or anything.

Luca (Cas's POV)

Cas couldn’t say he’d never thought about it. Some days he’d catch a hint of Luca’s scent, the cinnamon-caramel-brandy-laced heat of their skin making him think of baked goods and decadent desserts. It was only natural for some instinctive part of him to perk up and wonder if Luca’s blood would taste as rich and sweet as they smelled.

Cas (Gabriel's POV)

Gabriel was standing in the circle Cas Harlow’s arms, his chest solid and warm against his back. This close, he could smell the vestiges of Cas’s cologne clinging to his skin.

Bright mandarin, woody cedar, the earthy spice of patchouli mixed with notes of leather.

Cassius permanent-thorn-in-his-side Harlow had no business smelling that good!

A few descriptions I like!

The rain had stopped in the time that he’d been gone; the world smelled of wet pavement and gasoline, and the air outside had a thin kind of quality to it. An empty, sucking thing. Grey. The pause before an intake of breath.

Flakes of off-white paint speckled their fingers as they climbed, the smells of rust and tractor oil comforting to Cas in an odd kind of way.

When Gabriel arrived at Luca’s house after a tiresome first day back at school, it was to be met with the homely smells of sugar and vanilla wafting through the air. He breathed it in deep, something nostalgic tugging at his heart.

The earthy smells of bursting pollen and damp moss lifted underfoot with each step of his heavy boots. A finch took off from the treetops, snapping a twig as it went.

Cas had smelled of melancholy when he’d arrived at the coven meeting last night. Of the hoppy, frothy tang of cheap beer and spray paint.

He’d dreamed of them last night. Memories so clear he could all but smell the paint thinner as his sister Michaela rinsed out her paintbrushes at the kitchen sink, her easel set up in the sunny bay window where their grandmother liked to read the mail.

Notes of bourbon clung in the air, cloying and sweet; then there was the saltier, muskier smell of sweat and leather; older scents of gasoline, concrete, and dust; smoky, electrical heat from the dim hanging lights; the bright florals of Val’s perfume cut through with notes of coffee where she stood next to him; and there, on Luca’s other side, a wild, masculine, mouth-watering scent that could only be Cas.

**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.

Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.

Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.

Banyan Tree

Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.

Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.

Calla Lily ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters.

Cattail ~ Note: Seen through out DAO and DAI, identification comes from asset name.

Coleus ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters and in the Frostback Basin.

Cypress: Italian Cypress, Topiary Cypress ~ Note: In terms of the Italian Cypress, in world it wouldl likely be called the "Antivan Cypress" given that Antiva is pulling from Italian culture, food, environments, and other inspirational elements. Cypress is a plant that is named in canon.

Daikon Radish ~ Note: Found on Dennet's farm, identification comes from asset name.

Elephant Ear ~ Note: Foliage found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from asset name.

Palm: Curly Palm, Fan Palm ~ Note: Both palms are seen in the Frostback Basin, both are identified by their named assets.

Ponga Tree ~ Note: Also known as the 'Tree Fern'. This is the tree you see in Val Royeaux garden as coming from Par Vollen, and throughout the Arbor Wilds.

Redwood ~ Note: Identified by the name of the file asset. Found in the Winter Palace, Exalted Plains, and on multiplayer maps.

Sword Fern ~ Note: The identification comes from the asset name. It is found in the JoH DLC.

Trex

Waterweed ~ Note: In real life this is an entire genus not one particular plant. Though the six plants in this genus do share the common name of waterweed.

Additional Notes and Trivia

Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.

There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".

"Joder, ya me quiero ir a mimir," Val muttered to herself, locking the door behind her and tossing her keys onto a nearby shelf. She liked her job, but she would be lying if she said that having to stay up all night on watch wasn't killing her a little bit. She'd gone from sleeping almost a little bit too much to catching a few hours in the morning after her shift. Which meant she was almost always tired.

Walking into the living room, she greeted Saff with a nod before placing the food she'd gotten from the diner on their coffee table and dropping down onto the sofa with a long sigh. "Got us dinner," she said as she began unpacking the bag, another sigh escaping her lips. "So glad I'm off duty tonight. I'm fucking exhausted."

"I hope your roommate found some place to stay tonight" Roman said, peeking out through the curtain. It wasn't dark yet, but it was getting there. Roman had come over, and while he hadn't planned to stay the night the two had lost track of time and before the knew it the sun had started to set. It wasn't like Roman simply lived next door or even a few places down, no if Roman had headed out, even at the very start of sunset there was no way he'd make it back to the cave on time. "We should definitely have some more to drink though" he smirked as he pulled back from the curtain and stepped away from the window, "my glass is too empty"

“Not this again, not this again… Giovanni! Guy! Valentine!”

“Really?! THAT is Guy’s date’s first name??”

“Gio! You’re safe! Nevermind that, where is-”

“Watch out!” Giovanni tackles Ruixiong out of the way of a falling burning tree. The two roll away as the inferno spreads across the park. “We have to put out the fires!”

“I’m trying! But all this smoke-...”

“-=Sandstorm!=-” Rashid shouts his command as he raises his hand high. Saffron dust blows from the ground and kicks up to create a giant gust of wind bearing blankets of sand that suffocate the fires burning up the trees and gardens of the park. Once the fires go down, the sandstorm and its sand vanish, leaving behind only burnt debris and smoke.

Ruixiong coughs. “Rashid! Thank you! A thousand thank yous!”

“You better give me a thousand. Where is Guy and Val?”

“I-”

“I’m right here.”

“Val??”

Valentine points down the street, towards the direction of the docks. “I saw Guy run that way.”

“T-That’s to the ship! Gio, check on him!”

“Oh my way!” Giovanni takes on gold form and races down the road for Guy as the fire brigade rush to the park.

Ruixiong yells at Gio as he is a split second from earshot. “WAIT!! Giovanni!! Not in front of-!!”

“Ruixiong. I believe he already knows. I am dead certain he saw Guy light the park on fire.”

“He most certainly at the very least witness me create a sandstorm out of nothing.”

“AIYAA!! RASHID!! How could you be so careless?!”

“It’s all right! Don’t worry about me! Worry about your friend!”

“W-What?? But-”

“I’m not going to spread around what I just saw! Just go! Your friend needs you!”

“...........”

“I’ll be here. I’ll be waiting.”

“............... You’re a pal, Val.” Rashid and Phoebus run with Ruixiong back to La Demonia Roja.
