The trimurti in Hinduism is sometimes referred to by HIndus as the trinity of the Hindus. But the trimurti also becomes a quaternity in Hinduism. I have seen different examples for the transcendent fourth. I have read a book that described that the trimurti was a quaternity when the Mother Goddess was added. Another example is, those who worship Surya, the Sun God, see Surya as the transcendent fourth part of the trimurti. For the Surya worshippers, Surya encompasses the previous three deities in the trimurti. They say that the other three Gods are manifestations of Surya

King Vajra then had 16 idols of Krishna and other gods carved from a rare, imperishable stone called Braja and built temples to house these idols in and around Mathura so as to feel the presence of Lord Krishna. The Shivaistic (Hinduistic) temple-complex of Prambanan is situated some forty kilometers to the east of Borobudur. It matches the beauties of the contemporary Borobudur temple in many respects.

Feminism in the jungle: This ‘digital weapon’ helps women reclaim their power

Savitri Bisoyi, 42, was all smiles as she earned 18,000 rupees ($216) by selling five hundred kgs of tamarind harvested from her four trees this year. Earlier, she would lease out the trees at 1,500 to 2,000 rupees ($18 to $24) each and, at best, earn a meager sum of 6,000 to 8,000 rupees ($72 to $96).

Savitri lives in Maliguda village in Koraput district in India’s eastern state of Odisha. Koraput is the ground zero of Odisha’s tribal heartland: Its population is over 50% tribal. It is also India’s fourth poorest district: 33.54% of its population is multidimensionally poor, according to the National Multidimensional Poverty Index.

“All women collectors of non-timber forest produce (NTFP) in the 22-gram panchayats (the village governing unit) under six ‘blocks’ of Koraput district earned a good profit this year. They sold their harvest to Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation Limited (TDCC), a government body, at a minimum support price (MSP), fixed by the government – 3,600 rupees ($43) per quintal – thanks to the power of digitalization,” Pushpalata Bisoyi told RT.

Pushpalata is the secretary of a community center in Asana, Koraput; these centers are in predominantly forested tribal districts of India under Van Dhan Yojana, an initiative launched by the central government to promote NTFP-based livelihood.

A paradigm shift

The digital revolution was brought in by the Banashree mobile application launched in December 2022 by the Center for Youth and Social Development. As the name “Banashree” suggests – “Bana” means forest, and “Shree” means prosperity.

“This app empowered tribal women with information about the NTFP value chain system, market engagement, financial inclusion, and other entitlements of forest dwellers,” says Ashis Jali, who has been monitoring the implementation of welfare projects in tribal south Odisha.                                              

Asana’s center facilitated the collection and sale of around 20,000 kgs of tamarind by 20 members of two self-help groups (SHGs) to TDCC using the mobile app. “This is 50% of the tamarind sold to TDCC from Asana panchayat,” says Pushpalata. “Of the blocks of Koraput, Kundra sold the most.”

Eradicating exploitative practices

Pushpalata sold 915 kgs of tamarind harvest at 32,940 rupees ($395) this year. Last year, the same amount of produce got her 21,600 rupees ($259) from a local trader. Unscrupulous traders take advantage of families at critical moments and force them to sell at throwaway prices.

Basanti Harijan from Raniguda village bartered 20 kg of tamarind for a frock listed at 150 rupees ($1.80) for her five-year-old daughter last year. Had she sold the 20 kg of tamarind to TDCC, she could have earned 720 rupees ($8.65).“Due to the lack of proper information and channels to sell their produce, many still use bartering for clothes, groceries, and utensils,” Jali says.

The potential of the market in Odisha

For the forest-dwelling communities of districts like Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Mayurbhanj, forest produce is not just a crucial source of livelihood but a way of life, says Uppali Mohanty, a Bhubaneswar-based development practitioner. It contributes to around 40% of their annual income.

The NTFP market in Odisha is estimated at tens of millions of rupees annually. Products like tamarind, vegetable gum, seeds for sal trees, lac resin, honey, and medicinal herbs are highly sought-after in national and international markets.

With a rich biodiversity and a variety of NTFPs, Odisha has significant export potential. Despite this, the primary gatherers have been victims of distress sales due to hurdles such as lack of a proper system for marketing, Mohanty laments.

An application for upliftment

In this context, Banashree attempts to organize the NTFP value chain system by linking each family’s stock of NTFP to the market to ensure a fair price. It’s a platform for women to make informed decisions and encourage collectivism for enterprise and prosperity, says Uppali.                                              

“The app’s importance is in initiating digital literacy among women,” says Jali. It goes a long way in creating a gender-equal tribal society by addressing the barriers faced by women in digital connectivity, economic participation, and decision-making.

Till now, it is used by around 6,607 primary gatherers registered in Koraput district, Jali maintained. It nurtured community leaders as ‘Digital Champions’ who work in a mission mode to facilitate better digital access among women. These Digital Champions play a vital role in educating women on the use of this app, facilitating marketing activities, promoting collective enterprises, and building cohesion among the community members, Jali added further.

It is no cakewalk

“However, it was no cakewalk,” said Pushpalata, a digital champion. “Women in forested areas not only do their household chores, they devote most of their time to supporting their family income. Thus, uniting them at a particular place and time and motivating them to use smartphones, which has been an inaccessible luxury even for tribal males, is a daunting task,” she says.

“The women were unfamiliar with the operation of even first or second-generation mobile phones. While some families still do not possess a smartphone, many possess only one, operated by a male member,” said Karishma Kandapan, the digital champion of Sana Gadabalsa village in Kanagaon panchayat of Bandhugaon block.

“Fortunately, each family of Asana possesses at least one smartphone. It demands time and patience to train women on how to download the app, add information on their NTFP stock in the app, and check the current MSP and the stock with other community center members using the app,” said Pushpalata.

However, with her consistent efforts, she taught us not only the operation of the app but also the basic operation of smartphones,” says Padma Saanta, 45, a Kondh community member (an indigenous tribe) in Asana. “Pushpalata also trained my son. He is helping me in case I face any difficulty,” Padma, a community center member, adds.

The Banashree app started with tamarind, Jali says. It will gradually include other NTFPs and agricultural produce by integrating it with farmer-producer organizations (FPOs) for profitable marketing.

Charting a digital path ahead

Though the app went a long way in empowering women, a lot still needs to be done as far as digital literacy is concerned, says Basanta Kumar Nayak, a Bhubaneswar-based policy and budget analyst.

Tribal districts lack a robust digital infrastructure, such as reliable internet connectivity and access to smartphones or computers. On top of this, the gender digital divide is prominent in tribal communities, with women having limited access to digital devices, he laments.

It is time the government took measures to ensure digital connectivity in the interior, Nayak says. Digital literacy and training programs through community leaders are essential for tribal communities to empower them with market linkage, entitlements, social security schemes, and value-addition opportunities, leading to reducing dependency on intermediaries and propelling sustainable economic development.

Adobe of Divine: temples on banknotes

The soul is your temple- Chanakya. A Temple is a house or the adobe of divine. It is a place where every human being despite religion, caste and creed visits to find salvation and peace. For many, a temple is an ultimate place for worship; every individual has his own perception when it comes to the sanctum of gods. The oldest reference of the temple or house of gods is found in many civilizations across the globe. Arguably, the world’s oldest known temple is the Gobekli Tepe. The earliest written evidence about the temple is spectacularly described in the Rig Veda.  It mentions about the adobe of Lord Varuna, it is described to have a huge structure with thousands of pillars made of gold and silver. In Indian traditions temple is referred by many names like Mandir, Mandira, Ambalam, Gudi, Kavu, Koil, Kovil, Déul, Raul, Devasthana, Degul, Deva Mandiraya, and Devalaya. This aspect of Indian culture is beautifully depicted on the new series of banknotes issued after demonetization. They illustrate the beautiful concept of the temples on banknotes.

The new Indian banknotes with value 10, 20 and 50 rupees depict three of the most beautiful ancient Indian temples on banknotes. The sanctums of divine featured on the notes are the jewel of the rock-cut architecture Kailashnath temple at Ellora, the (black pagoda) Sun temple of Konark and the Vittala temple of Hampi.

Hampi is the marvelous evidence of the ancient Indian Vijaynagar Empire. Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world’s second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing and the richest in India. It was the domain of one of the greatest Indian Kings Krishnadev Raya.  Muslim sultanates conquered and looted the city in 1565, after which the city was only left with ruins.

The Vitthala temple suited in the center of the Hampi city is the most beautiful Hindu temple in Hampi, built in the early-to-mid-16th century. Its entrance is stylized with gopuram and other two side gopurams. The main temple stands on a paved courtyard and smaller ones are located on the east. The Garuda shrine is shaped like a stone chariot in the courtyard. It had a tower, which was removed during the late 19th-century restorations. There’s a big, square, open-pillared, axial community hall in front of this shrine.

  This wonderful symbol of the Hampi site is featured on the latest Rs 50 note issued by the Reserve Bank of India. It is one of the beautiful featured monuments of the new series of temples on banknotes

  Kailashnath temple of Ellora

The most beautiful and undeniable wonder of India is the mighty Kailashnath temple of Ellora. It is the epitome of rock-cut architecture in India. The temple is a megalith, carved from a rock cliff face. It is excavated from top to bottom which makes an overseer spellbound with its engineering and sculpture treatment.

The central shrine of the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Most deities in the temple and its courtyard on the right are dedicated to Shaivaite and left side deities are Vaishnavaites  The shikhara of this temple is in Dravidian style and the main mandapa is supported by sixteen pillars.

The creation of this temple is dedicated to the patronage of Rastrakuta King Krishna I in 8th century AD but the Chalukyan and Pallava influence can also be seen here. This temple has the whole story of Ramayana and Mahabharata carved on the temple panel. There is also a notable carving of the Ravanaanugraha inside the temple complex.

The 20 rupee banknote of the new series of temples on banknotes issued in 2016 illustrates this wonder on its reverse.

    Sun Temple of Konark

The sun temple of Konark is a spectacular architectural marvel of ancient India, adorning the eastern shores of the Indian peninsula. This human-made phenomenon represents the tranquillity of temple architecture and the art of Orissa.

This black pagoda was built by the King Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty in the 13th century AD. It’s believed that a workforce of twelve hundred artisans and architects have invested their best skills to create this wonder. The structure of this temple is like the chariot of the sun drawn by the seven horses and twelve pairs of the intricately carved wheels.

This grand temple of the sun god consists of a Deula (sanctum), Jaganmohan (public hall) and the Natya Mandir (performing hall). The walls of this grand sanctum represent the daily life, style, art, religion, and culture of that period. The beauty of this structure is so enduring that it has found its place in the world heritage list.

  To promote and acknowledge this wonder of India, Reserve Bank of India has featured this temple on the rupees 50 banknotes. It is an incredible specimen in temples on banknotes series.

India Post has also issued a se-tenant stamp in 2001. It features the Rekha deul/ Jaganmohan and the Konark wheel.

⚠️ Warning : i consider this asteroid as prominent and brings the most effect if it conjuncts ur personal planets (sun,moon,venus,mercury,mars) and if it conjuncts ur personal points (ac,dc,ic,mc), i use 0 - 2.5 orbs (for conjunctions). For sextile, trine, opposite and square aspects to asteroids i usually use 0 - 2 orbs. Yes tight conjunctions of planet / personal points to asteroids tends to give the most effect, but other aspects (sextile,trine,square,opposite, etc) still exist, even they produce effects. If it doesn't aspect any of your planets or personal points, check the house placement of the asteroid, maybe some stuff/topics relating to this asteroid could affect some topics/stuff relating to the house placement . ⚠️

Some observations about famous people who have the asteroid varuna prominent in their astrology natal charts ✨ :

- people with varuna conjunct their descendant are very influential people but they are alot of fans and alot of haters who really hate them at the same time (example : Eminem, kim kardashian, paris hilton, vladimir putin)

- people with varuna conjunct mars are very vastly well known for their martian qualities (example : maddona)

- people with varuna conjuncting their personal planets but it is badly aspected by other planets are ussualy vastly known but for their bad qualities (example : jacob elordi, shia lebouf)

- people with varuna conjunct their vertex or anti - vertex are fated to be vastly well known (example : alexa demie)

- naomi campbell have varuna conjunct sun opposite her neptune this really make sense she is very vastly known of her shady entertaining personality, i love it 😂
