team chaotix week day 3: metal virus/nightmare

so. so I think it’s insane how espio was the sole survivor of his team during the virus and had to fight his family during the final fight against zavok. anyway in this essay I will explain how espio has hidden trauma from the virus which includes-

May I ask what do you like about Team Chaotix?

Of course!

I was only somewhat recently introduced to them. As in I made this blog within two weeks of meeting them.

One of my friends, who really likes Heroes, hyped them up to me. Then I read the IDW comics and really started enjoying the characters. Some of the comic screenshots that go up have my ramblings in the tags, mostly for the Metal Virus one because that was the arc that really made me notice them and go back and look into them.

I've always been prone to liking groups of characters who come together to form a sort of found family. And while that might not be the exact dynamic they have, they're a Team and that's undeniable.

That, and the fact that they're detectives comprised of: a 20 year old crocrodile, who's honestly a bit of a tired dad and the only character to need to pay rent, and worry about bills; a 16 year old chamelon who's also a ninja and can turn invisible?!; and a 6 year old bee, who somehow has the strength to carry them all with his little wings. (I promise there's more to why I like the individual characters than this, I just don't want this post to be longer than it already is)

And I just love their dynamic. This months IDW issue (77) held probably some of my favourite interactions between them.

Vector is making jokes while Espio makes a tired face cause come on Vector, we're the detectives here! Not Sonic!

And then a few panels later he makes Espio makes his own joke. I love Sonic's line here, and of course Espio remains serious. His skills are no joke guys (and well, based on the results I'm inclined to agree).

Charmy and Vector's interactions this issue were my absolute favourite. I don't have much else to add for these beyond the fact that I love this.

And then this exchange here too. He literally is your boss Charmy. Charmy's whole insistance on taking that board game was so much fun, but I won't keep this post going longer.

Anywho! TL:DR They are really interesting characters to put together and their dynamic is so fun.

One of my favorite Espio headcanons is him being a baker in secret. And it’s not because he feels embarrassed by it or anything.

No the reason he keeps it a secret is so no one steals the baked goods he makes.

I know for sure I've asked about this a long time ago before but I'm kinda back to thinking about how different the development of Espio and Silver's dynamics would've been in Rivals 2 if they weren't as quick to fully trust each other as they were in canon but remained "enemies" a bit longer and only really teamed up out of necessity. If their dynamic isn't already near-spotless following an inexplicable "for some reason I trust you" type conversation, there's more room (and requirement, really) for growth on both sides; in the original dynamic it feels more like if there's any growth to be had then it'd be solely on Silver, so this thought might also help find a balance

I recall having talked about it before as well, yes. I would say that Espio and Silver alike have quite a few vices that would make cooperating between them far more difficult: they're both tremendously stubborn, proud, opinionated, hot-heated, and just to the extent neither can let evil go its way. While none of those are necessarily attributes that are bad in the situation they are in, I can envision them clashing very badly because of those traits. Considering Espio is actively chasing Silver down to gather evidence of him committing a crime, Silver's hot-headed nature might cause him to fly right off the handle if Espio keeps pushing him about it. And Silver's haughty and rude attitude in turn might make Espio far less willing to see the best in him and try to trust him. I think it speaks to Silver's honest nature and Espio's ability to see the truth in it that they were able to cooperate so relatively smoothly in Rivals 2, but I can also envision many scenarios wherein things did not go so idyllically until far later in the game.

What you're saying next is actually a bit of an issue I have when writing my fics: I've joked before that Espio is "already perfect" because he's just... basically an expert at everything, haha! He completes his missions well, he's driven and skilled, and his overly serious demeanour as the Chaotix's straight man alongside his snark feels like more like comedy than a flaw or something that truly hinders him to me. Meanwhile, Silver is far more 'imperfect' to me: he jumps to conclusions, he can be uncooperative and rude out of nowhere, and even if he is always right in the end, the way towards that end can be tremendously rocky because of those personality traits. That was why I wanted Espio to also go through a development in Stories that made sense to who he is as a character: specifically that he follows Vector's rule to a T regardless of his personal opinion on the matter, which begins to clash with the fact Silver is very much guilty but did what he did for a good cause (aka not a black-and-white scenario at all). And since Silver plays a central role there as well, I think his flaws can play a role also: he doesn't want Espio to be walked over, but the way in which he conveys that (which is rude as hell) might make things worse at first. Vector might be even more pushy about Espio gathering evidence if he gets yelled at by Silver, and Espio in turn might feel needled and put under pressure from two parties now that demand entirely opposite things from him (in his mind). I think such a thing could help make their dynamic more interesting and also different from New Beginnings, while fitting with their personalities.

thinkin' about how charmy's technically like. the only member of the chaotix that has fluff. he seems to have like a lOT of fur too like look at those big antennas!! a soft fluff ball of fur hides under that helmet i bet.

cant remember if i said this but i do think charmy is genuinely quite polite and stuff, it's just he doesnt really try as hard around vector and also enjoys to actively annoy espio, so we don't see this side more often. a lot of his lines in sonic heroes when he's not being talked down to, especially when it isn't other chaotix members, are quite polite in the way that little kids often are. he says please and thank you a fair amount, for instance. similarly, in shadow the hedgehog, yeah people see him as annoying or whatever but if you look past that, he's trying to help and compliment shadow the whole time (in a way this is because he does idolise shadow a bit, but i do think this is also because he strives to be polite).

he's not great at conveying it because he's a hyperactive 6 y/o and we dont see much of his personality beyond his dynamic with vector and espio, but he really is quite a sweet character.

I pretty much made these bc I wanted to mess with Julie-Su and Mighty dynamics. (Especially Julie-Su development I want to make her feel like an actual character) I wanted to do Ray, I just ran out of juice. The chaotix in my au are a lot like a family. Vector's literally everyone's father figure here, including Mighty and Julie-Su. They all love eachother and have eachother's backs even if they butt heads sometimes. Charmy: Sees him as a little brother. This means she would both destroy the world for him while also snatching the last treat before he can. This goes for Ray too. Her favs, the others don't ask her what her 3rd favorite reptile is. Mighty: They often train together, and while she's not as strong as him, they still wrestle and such. They have a tendency to talk more since Mighty's laid back. Usually the one who manages to calm her down. (Or anyone down for that matter. Mighty's the team's therapist) Vector: They don't always see eye to eye, and while she's usually more mature on level with Espio, she can't resist pushing Vector's buttons. As mentioned, she does see him as a father figure, so it's more of the annoying that kids do to their parents. But don't worry, as the father figure, he has plenty of ways to get under her skin too. They also happen to butt heads the most for different ideas of how missions should be carried out. Espio: @charleecat-bat mentioned/suggested it'd be a fun/friendly rivalry between the two because they're both marksmen. She's great with guns, he's great with his kunai and shuriken stars. They get compettive during training, but once they get too snippy about it they can't help but laugh how stupid it is to get shaken up about. (Also yes she's taller than him he's slightly jealous.) Main thing I want to do with this version of Julie is make her still sassy and hot headed, but be more genuine. She doesn't get jealous as easily either.

Are Sonic + friends claustrophobic?

Sonic, of course, is the king of claustrophobia. If he can't move his legs he is noping the fuck out of there. Even weighted blankets bug him- he has to be able to move and fidget as he pleases.

Tails isn't classically claustrophobic, but he's got a big fear of entanglement, especially with his tails. He tried a foam pit exactly once and he had to take a few hours to calm down after.

Amy isn't claustrophobic! She likes making tight little nests to curl up in after a long day. You might find her curled up in a ball in a cupboard for hide-and-seek.

Knuckles loves small enclosed spaces. He's an avid caver willing to squeeze through some scarily narrow crevices to find new branches and chart new paths. This dude literally loves tunneling through dirt. Call him if you've got a confined space you need to check out, seriously.

Shadow normally wouldn't be claustrophobic but through trauma related to test tubes and escape pods, he sort of is. (Poor dude can't catch a break.)

Rouge is not claustrophobic! She is in your vents (joke). While she might not like having her wings restricted, she's more than willing to do so to get the job done.

Omega is absolutely claustrophobic and he would never admit it. It's not the proximity or the feeling of the walls close to him that gets him- it's any implication that he might not be able to leave or force his way out if he wants to. Small room + locked door + no windows is a recipe for some very catastrophic explosions.

Blaze is fine with most tight spaces, but the moment her whiskers touch the walls she's out. Nope.

Silver is actually agoraphobic! Poor guy. Being out in the open makes him feel exposed. He'd be much better in a small little space, thank you very much. Generally the only exception to this rule is if he's out in nature- even then he'd prefer a denser forest over open hills.

Vector is fine with tight spaces, but he's a pretty big guy so his "tight space" is a lot of other people's "comfortable room". He deals with it as best he can.

Charmy loves tight spaces. Matter of fact, he is in your walls (joke). This dude has a habit of popping up in all the places you thought no one would ever go. Vector almost turned on the dryer while he was in it.

Espio also likes tight spaces. Because they help with stealth, of course. Plus a good weighted blanket is nice.

“WOAHAHAAH-“

Vector roars out in a startled manner, moving his feet around sharply in a panic at the gunshots directed tot he floor, however despite espio popping into visibility and the pthers, besides mighty, startled, vector easily shakes it off with a big smile and laugh.

“Heey shadow! Sorry about that, we just thought you could use sum holiday cheer though, yer boyfriend told us you were feelin sick or sumthin and we thought it’d be nice to give ya company buddy!”

Vector happily spoke up with a nervous laugh, rubbing the back of his head with a gentle smile,mahaking his head with a chuckle.

“Yeah its four days till, but hey! Doesn’t hurt to have some Christmas cheer right? Figured you could use the cheery company while sonics off handling the badniks!”

Vector hums, moving to walk into the house and make room for his team to file in aswell, holding back laugter when charmy immediatly flies twords the hedgehog, setting his basket on the table and happily buzzing.

“SHADOW!! HEY! ITS BEEN AWHILE DUDE!! where were you and sonic at all this time?? We thought you guys ha djust died or left!! We missed you two alot yknow? Don’t do that again ya hear?!?”

Charmy buzzes enthusiastically yet also worriedly.

Mighty lets out a heavy sigh and moves to walk in, gently setting his basket of goods down by the coffee table of the living room and gives a small wave, ray is sitting on his shoulder.

“Hey there shadow, sorry about uh.. the loud intrusion. I tried to talk them out of it but uh.. you know how hyperactive these guys can be. Hope it didnt cause tooo much of a startle.. but yeah, its all in good faith. But we can leave if you really dont want the company.”

Mighty spoke, he qas the most calm and rational beside espio, it seemed. Atleast, the one that acted more like the adult here.

Despite it being so cold and chilly, it seems that theres.. some sort of visitor preparing to see the edgehog and his little chao, well. Not just one, alot of visitors, it was gonna be a full house, wasn’t it? However instead of just.. KNOCKING like normal people, the chaotix BURST trhough the door, mostly vector, with the others following suit and chanting in unison “MERRY CHRISTMAS SHADOW!”

Well, most of them, mighty just gave a friendly yet nervous wave. He knew how reactive shadow was. This wasnt the best idea but hey, they brought baskets of gifts and food, maybe that’d make up for it?

NOT to burst into his home. like these idiots did. why?

The Second Shadow's ears perked up from the sound of someone bursting through his door, he immediately hauled himself out of his seat in the kitchen and snatched the nearest gun he had set up on the wall. he had guns set up all around his house in niche little hiding places that only he knew. why? for this occasion.

To Which, of course, Shadow began firing not one but TWO shots in the direction of the floor near the door as warning shots before lifting them to aim directly at the group standing there. with an irritated snarl and the slight bristling of his fur and quills, he speaks without lowering the gun.

' ' What part about me having a locked door don't you understand? not only is my door locked, but I was two seconds from putting a bullet in each of your skulls. if one of you doesnt speak up about what the hell you're doing here.. ' '

Shadow trails off, narrowing his eyes sharply at the gifts and baskets they carried. then he took into consideration on what they said and let out another low growl, lowering the gun whilst flaring his fangs some.

' ' you idiots.. it's four days before Christmas day. leave me alone. ' '

Shadow glares at the break in the door where the lock had busted when they broke the door open. not a good start for them, it seemed.
