I don't think I appreciate Samiya enough even after adoring Veer Zaara with my entire being.
Tumblr media
A girl in a male dominated field. Fighting prejudices, seeing humans as humans irrespective of religion nation etc, going against your own mentor because it went against her ideals.
A headstrong woman with strong beliefs and a heart full of love for humanity.
And she was based on a real person.
We used to have such movies with such beautiful characters that it overshadowed the jingoism going on in the rest of the country. Now the jingoism is loud and we don't have such characters.
So holding onto Samiya tightly. Holding onto Veer Zaara tightly. It's not simply nostalgia that is making people go watch it again in theatres 2 decades later. It's the hopeful nation that still sees beyond hate. It's women seeing strong women with their feminity and competency and love. It's us seeing Veer and Zaara and Samiya going against elders and conventions and winning at the end with love.
I again saw a post on Veer Zaara and went on another spiral 🫠

In Main Yahaan Hoon song i've Never praised Preity Zinta enough as Zaara Hayat Khan where she spectacularly presented so deep yearning Zaara was having for Veer on the eve of her marriage.
Having such real time hallucination of Veer, of his gaze, voice, his fingers all over her body, his breath, his lips on her neck and most importantly his very presence in her mind - So Alive! 💥
The song itself a Masterpiece in terms of lyrics, music composition, singing.

As promised, i wrote a oneshot on what Zaraa must be feeling during the Main Yahan Hoon song
For better feelings, please listen to the song
Zaraa never expected the stony silence that her father greeted her with, when she came back from India. Something burned in her at his treatment, something like misplaced and unwanted shame. She had done nothing wrong— she had tried to give a good last goodbye to his mother, and what is he giving her? Silence.
When he finally talks to her on the day she is supposed to be engaged to Raza, she is infinitely relieved. But she doesn't see him as the man who held her hand and taught her how to write and taught her how to ride a cycle. She sees a man, who wants his career in politics to flourish, who is chasing the dreams of his dead father, and Zaraa wonders if one day she too, will start to chase the dreams of her father and forget anything else.
(Hasn't she already started to do that?)
She is in her father's arms, her ear is pressed to his chest, and she doesn't hear a heartbeat. A whisper of winds from the slightly open window and Zaraa can again feel the way Veer Pratap Singh pushed her hair behind her ear, on their first—rather disastrous— meeting.
"I am here," his voice seems to say, like a tease in her ears as she imagines him smiling at her. She craves to see his crooked smile. "There are no distances and differences between us, and I'm here." She imagines him coming closer and she wishes she could look into his eyes again and see the way his eyes brightened whenever he ate something sweet.
She thinks, with a hitch in her breath, that Veer would be wiping away her tears. He would see her crying and instantly try to make her happy. Even her father hasn't noticed she's crying. She wants Veer's reassurance and easy calm.
Zaraa walks down to the hall with her hand in her father's, and it somehow feels like she is trapped in a cage instead of the feeling of protection she is used to. Zaraa stares at Raza while he greets her family and she wishes she could see the same respect in his eyes as Veer would have had.
It starts to rain, she can hear it, and she instantly misses Veer even more, thinking of the cart ride they shared in the rain and how he made sure that she wouldn't get drenched even when he was half soaked in rain. "I'm here," his voice is in her ears again, teasing her, calling her to just turn around and look at him but by the moment she forces her eyes to move, he's hidden off somewhere, still teasing her.
"What boundaries, what limitations?" He seems to ask her, completely at ease with himself and Zaraa clenched her hand to feel the warmth of his hand in hers but she is too focused on this mirage of Veer Pratap Singh and she raises her hand and—
Suddenly, Raza is holding her hand and sliding the ring on her finger and— just like that. She's engaged.
Raza starts dancing to the music, completely out of rhythm but enthusiastic enough to make up for it and Zaraa wonders if that is how she looked when she was dancing along with Veer and his family on Lodhi. She remembers the way Veer's shoulders moved as she danced, surprisingly lazy in his footwork.
The window blows at her dress and she can imagine Veer leaning toward her face and teasing her, daring her to start dancing. She reaches out with her hand to touch him but he is again a mirage, the reality is living in India. A man who would give his life for her. Living in another country.
The rest of the ceremony passes by in a blue, and Zaraa barely blocks the questions that come from almost everyone, asking about her journey and asking after her health.
Try as she might, Veer's presence and his memory will not stay hidden under her heart— he is a creature of the free winds, and she is not his keeper. He knows this too, because he challenges her,"I am secret, one you won't be able to keep, ever. I am ingrained in your mannerisms and you will never be able to forget those mannerisms."
And it is true. She finds herself slipping into his casual accent sometimes, but it usually only happens when she's talking to herself, and she's thankful for it. She cannot afford for anyone else to think that she is less than the nobility she was raised to be.
Zaraa wonders if she's going mad and it almost seems like he is there, reassuring her again, and guiding her again as he tells her to not be shocked of his presence, for he lives on in her heart. Zaraa doesn't doubt it. He has a way of just charming his way into her heart and she doubts that he left a part of his undeniably irresistible self in her heart. Something in her heart is beating faster and faster like she is on the verge of getting something right and— she wishes she could understand her heart in the way he understood.
When she goes to sleep that night, she imagines she is back in Veer's room, the small and cozy room giving her more comfort than her large one. She hugs a pillow to herself and breathes, finding herself disappointed when it doesn't have the same scent of something icy and fresh as Veer's leather jacket. She wishes she had it, the garment would have provided her some sort of an escape from the numbingly long festivities of her unwanted marriage.
And Veer—
He's everywhere. Head in her lap when she is getting her hair oiled, head leaning toward her when she is trying on a chunri for her wedding outfit, eating from her hand at lunch, guiding her through the dark corridors to her room at midnight. He's in the unseasonal rains, and she feels as if he is the manifestation of every storm raging inside her heart— he is fearless, doubtless, and ever present.
She knows the real Veer probably wouldn't, but the man in her memories and imagination is so cocky, he claims that he knows that he's living in every though,t every question, every answer she has and he has become the center of her very being.
She smiles as she imagines and wonders if she knew just how correct his words were and how much she was absorbed in his very existence and that she could not untangle herself from the mere thought of him—
He promises that he's here, beyond boundaries and limits, that he is here and will stay and then he disappears.
Zaraa doesn't the only thing that seems like an option, she turns away from him and runs away, just as she did when they last met, and this time, she doesn't look back.

If this scene hadn't happened their love story wouldn't have started.
If Zaara hadn't been the self respecting girl she is, she wouldn't have gone to Veer to both apologize and put her reason.
And Veer being Veer was already smitten with her looks, their fates were at work. But after this scene, he sees her as a nice human too. And maybe really falls in love right there.
Yes I can write Paras for each scene of this movie and why they're all significant.

Is there a particular scene or character that lives rent free in your head?
Vikram Rathore's interval scene, Veer Pratap Singh, Raees, Om Prakash Makhija, the list goes on...
Got a favorite musical number?
my srk favorites playlist has like 80 songs so this is tough to answer but Radha is just so joyful! Banke tera jogi, jhoome jo pathaan, tumse milke dil ka, maahi ve have all stuck with me
If you could ask SRK one question, what would it be?
Probably something about the poems and backstories he writes for his characters, always wanted to know more about that...
I don't think I can tag anyone who hasn't been tagged already so whoever sees this post is welcome to join in
and i love this photo so much

Maharani Jaiwanta Baiji Songara took the flower from the copper plate nearby and pushed it on the needle, making it roll down in the white string of the Garland she was making. The Maharani of Mewar was as generous as the flow of the River, always giving and never asking. But there was one thing Jaiwanta Baiji was picky about.
The Pooja of Her Krishna.
And thus, the Queen of Mewar was stringing garlands of white Jasmine flowers along with her sister-wives, the other wives of her Husband Maharana Uday Singh, namely Sajja Baiji Solankini and Karamati Baiji of Marwar, Maharana Uday Singh's second and third wife respectively, his fourth wife Veer Bai Jhala having gone to the temple of Eklingji to pray for the beloved son of Mewar, Kunwar Pratap Singh Sisodiya who was stationed at Kelwara.
"Jija! Here." Sajja Baiji said and gave the newly strung garland to Jaiwanta Baiji, the dusky skinned beauty of Jalore taking it and admiring it. "Jija, I see you thinking about something a lot nowadays. What happened? You look worried." Karamati Baiji asked.
It was a known fact to both that why Jaiwanta Baiji thought a lot. The Songara Chauhan Princess was worried about the ammunition help that would be needed for future help. Maharana Udai Singh remained firm on his resolve to surrender to the Mughals, but some other Rajput kings did not consider it appropriate to fight against the Mughals. This was the reason that Mewar had less military force, due to which the Mewari Rajputs had to pay a heavy price in the future.
"I'm just worried about ammunition, Karamati Behna. We know that some of our family are openly with us, and some are against it. How will we fight the Mughals until we get enough military forces?" Jaiwanta Baiji placed forth her worry.
"Jija, why do you worry about this? Ranaji will find a good solution. And about ammunition, I'm here right? My Father Rao Prithvi Singh Solanki won't stay behind in helping Ranaji." Sajja Baiji said in a soothing tone, which eased the worry in Jaiwanta's heart. Just as she could string another flower, her maid walked in.
"Khamma Rani sa Hukum!" She bowed. "Rana sa Hukum as for you three's presence in his Private Chambers main room. He awaits you with Rawat Chundawat ji." She told them and the three Queens of Mewar looked at each other with furrowed eyebrows, wondering why he would need all of their presence at once.
They all looked at each other, as Amar came in running exactly then for Jaivanta Bai. She laughed softly and scooped the three year old into her arms and took him with them, knowing that seeing Amar will calm Ranaji down too.
Rana Uday Singh meanwhile was agitated, worrying his lower lip between his teeth as he paced around the map of Rajputana. "We need ammunition, Ranaji. Kunwar Pratap is in Kelwara with our Army, and Bhils of Van Rajya are with us all thanks to him. But we still need an entire army at our dispatch for our war against the Mughals." Rawatji said.
Rawat Sai Das Chundawat was a great and able commander for Mewar, who also worked as a Strategy Planner and a Advisor to Maharana Uday Singh. The History of Mewar said that originally, the Chundawats were the sub-caste od Sisodiyas. Their progenitor Chunda Singh was the original heir of his Father Maharana Lakha, but gave away the Throne to his younger step brother Mokal Singh Sisodia.
"I know, I know Rawatji. But you know what happened to the letters we sent. Some replied in agreement, some in disagreement and some weren't replied." Maharana Uday Singh said in a frustrated tone, just as the two heard the sound of anklets.
"Dadajiraj!” came the cheery voice of Amar, who ran straight to his grandfather’s arms, as the latter’s three wives entered, looking at their husband and understanding the tense situation.
"Bhanwarji!" Uday Singh smiled automatically as he picked up his grandson and kissed his head. "You were with your Dadisa?" He asked.
"I just went to her, Dadajiraj," said the three year old, his smile the same as his mother's, though everything else was a copy of Pratap.
"Bhanwarji, as much as I wish to talk to you and spend some time with you, I have something very important to discuss with your Dadisas. Why don't you go to your Maa sa Hukum?" Uday Singh said gently.
"Hukum Dadajiraj" Amar Singh slipped out of his hold and joined his palms in a greeting to everybody and left in search of his Mother.
"Ranaji, what happened?" Jaiwanta Baiji asked once she was sure Amar Singh had gone. "Jaiwanta Baiji, I need to talk to you about something important. I have discussed this new Battle plan with Rawatji for the war against Mughals but.." Rana Uday Singh trailed off looking away with a sigh.
"But?" Jaiwanta Baiji asked as Sajja Baiji and Karamati Baiji exchanged glances.
"But we are short of ammunition Jaiwanta Baiji.." He sighed, finally telling her his worries.
"Do you have any Kingdom in mind to form an alliance with?"
At this question of Jaiwanta Baiji, everyone looked at her. When the Queen shared a glance with other spouses of Kings, the other two knew what she was implying.
"Alliance?" Uday Singh furrowed his brows and looked at Jaiwanta Baiji. "I don't understand Jaiwanta Baiji." He said quietly. He did understand it very well, he just wanted her to say it clearly.
“To get a larger army and ammunition, we need to form an alliance,” Jaivanta said gently. “Shakta and Heer’s marriage strengthened the bond with Jalore, but what about Toda?”
“Toda?" Uday Singh blinked confused before looking at Sajja Baiji who stepped up. "Ranaji, my niece Pyaar Kanwar Solanki. She is the daughter of my younger brother and his first wife who died early, and my brother was martyred. She was mainly raised by my brother's second Wife Mumal Baiji and my Father Rao Prithvi Singh Solanki." Sajja Bai said. "She is around 2 or 3 years younger than Ajabde." She told him.
Rana Uday Singh nodded with a hum as he reminisced about the shy and timid Toda Princess whom he had seen ages ago when Sajja Baiji's brother was alive. "Will Kunwar Pratap agree? He's very protective of Ajabde Baisa." He asked.
"Why won't he when Ajabde Baisa convinces him?" Jaiwanta Baiji smiled innocently, making Rana Uday Singh look at her incredulously. "Jaiwanta Baiji, Ajabde Baisa is the eldest daughter in law of Mewar. She must understand that as the future Heir Kunwar Pratap has to marry multiple times, what is asking her then?" He asked.
"The same reason as you ask Dheer Behna before doing anything." Karamati Baiji piqued in with a sweet smile. Uday Singh froze, turning to look at Karamat Baiji and sighed. "Karamati Baiji, I ask you all too" He was cut off.
”Before you ask Dheer? I am your first wife!” Jaivanta Bai said with a frown.
"I am not saying that!!" Uday Singh said immediately, his eyes widening in the fear that Jaiwanta Baiji will get upset with him. Although she was never one to get upset, he had his own experience with her. But wait, WHY was he being reminded of those experiences now? They had a Son who had his own Son! Uday Singh mentally shook his head. Calm Jaiwanta Baiji first.
"Jaiwanta Baiji, I mean to say that I take your Paramarsh- I mean you fours too before asking her!" He tried to calm her down.
”You do? Then why are you questioning why Ajabde’s permission is needed?” Jaivanta fought back with her husband, glaring at him. Rawatji looked at the scene unfolding in front of him incredulously, standing quietly with an amused smile. The only person who can win against a stubborn Maharana Uday Singh was his first wife— Maharani Jaiwanta Baiji Songara of Jalore.
Uday Singh saw through it and sighed. Putting his hands on hips, he shook his head exasperated. "Jaiwanta Baiji, I can never win against you. Okay, you go and ask Ajabde, and I will write to Pratap only after getting her agreement." Uday Singh said.
Jaiwanta Baiji smiled victoriously, looking at her Sisters. "Then Ranaji, we must go back to our work." She said and took her leave, her feet turning towards Ajabde's room.

This movie has aged so so well. Like you won't know it's a 2004 release, the picture quality remains stunning. Dialogues don't sound old. Actors acted.
Classic Aditya Chopra. Dude make more movies please.
I know it's a Yash Chopra directorial but Aditya Chopra has his fingerprints all over.

Dunki Review
(mild spoilers)
I really wanted to like this film but it was underwhelming. While the message was good, I felt like something was missing. I probably wouldn't watch it again.
The main cast was great, I liked all the characters and their acting. They had good chemistry with each other.
This is my first Hindi film of Taapsee's (I've only seen her in Mogudu) and I thought she was great as Manu. I liked her a lot.
Hardy reminded me of Veer Pratap Singh and he was really sweet. When he protected Manu from the military police, I was like 🥵
He looked amazing as an old man. Vikram Rathore had some serious competition.
Vicky's small cameo was impactful. I cried a little bit. Poor baby.
What Hardy said at Sukhi's funeral about the British not knowing the language when invading India...so true, bestie. Drag them! Loved when Manu shaded them too.
I also loved how Hardy put a statue of Big Ben on Manu's rooftop because it was meaningful to her. And when he proposed I was like 😭
I just felt like the story was rushed and incomplete. I would have liked to see more about their lives in England, since they went through hell to get there. What did Manu end up doing? How did she support her family back home in India? Why didn't any of them get married or start families? Manu's brain tumor came out of nowhere and felt random.
I wouldn't have let Hardy go just to spend 25 years alone in colonizer land, but that's just me.
I knew Hardy would cause a scene in the court room and be deported. His face when Manu said she would miss him broke my heart 💔
The scene with Bakir was really good. I was so shocked when we find out Hardy orchestrated the whole thing.
Overall, I think this is SRK's weakest movie out of the 3 released this year. I didn't like it but I didn't completely hate it, either.
