Wet Beast Wednesday: true water bugs
A while back, I made a Wet Beast Wednesday post about aquatic insect larvae. In that post, I said I'd do another one on aquatic adult insects. Well the time has come, but there are too many aquatic insects to do a whole post about. Instead I decided to cover one group of them, the true water bugs of the clade Nepomorpha. These are all members of the true bug order Hemiptera notable for their aquatic lifestyles, though some spend much of their time on shore and a few species can even fly. Like the larvae post, I'll split this up into brief overviews of some notable groups.
(Image: the water scorpion Nepa Cinerea in a threat posture. It is a large, brown, beetle-like insect. The front pair of legs are developed into mantis-like grasping limbs. The wings are spread, revealing a red abdomen. A tube-like tail extends from the rear end. End ID)
Probably the most famous of the Nepomorpha are the giant water bugs of family Belostomatidae. Also known as toe-biters, alligator ticks, and electric light bugs, these bugs are know for their extremely painful bites. Like other Nepomorphs, their mouthparts are fused into a proboscis which they use to pierce the hides of their prey. They then releases digestive venom into the prey, causing its insides to liquefy for the bug to suck back up. The bites of giant water bugs are described as being excruciatingly painful, but are not medically significant. Giant water bugs look similar to beetles, but their front pair of legs are modified into grasping claws that are used to grab prey and hold it still. In insects, grasping limbs like this are called raptorial. They are primarily ambush predators and their prey includes other invertebrates as well as small fish and amphibians. The largest species are in the genus Lethocerus, which are large enough to hunt young turtles and snakes. The largest can reach over 12 cm (4.7 in), making them the largest of the true bugs. Members of Lethocerus are also powerful flyers known to congregate around electric lights during mating season. After mating, the female lays her eggs on the male's back. He will protect them until they hatch, though he is rendered flightless during this period and cannot mate again until they hatch. Females will mate many times each season. The species Lethocerus indicus is often eaten fried in southeast Asia.
(Image: a giant water bug standing on a stick just below the surface of the water. It is a large, brown, beetle-like bug with a distinct head and large eyes. The front legs are adapted into grasping claws. It has grabbed a small, silvery fish and is feeding on it. End ID)
(Image: a female and male giant water bug having recently mated. They are visually similar, but the male is carrying eggs on his back. They are light brown, oval structures laid in a large cluster. End ID)
Similar in appearance and lifestyle to the giant water bugs are the much smaller creeping water bugs of family Naucoridae. While their lifestyle as sit-and-wait predators who use raptorial front legs to catch prey and a proboscis to inject digestive venom is very similar to that of the giant water bugs, they max out in size at about 1.3 cm (1/2 in). Despite being much smaller than giant water bugs, their bites are reported to be far more painful, among the most painful of insect bites, though still not medically serious. They trap bubbles of air beneath their wings to bring an air supply with them as they dive.
(Image: a creeping water bug. It resembles a giant water bug but with shorter limbs and a less distinct head. Its body is yellowish with darker brown patched and dark wings folded over its body. End ID)
Water scorpions are members of the family Nepidae. All true water bugs have a tube-like structure on their rear ends called the siphon that is used to intake air from the surface of the water. The Nepinae have siphons that are much longer than those of other true water bugs which, combined with their raptorial front limbs, has given them the nickname water scorpions. The water scorpions are divided into two subfamilies, Nepinae and Ranatrinae. The Nepinae have rounded bodies that make them look very similar to giant water bugs while the more common Ranatrinae have slender, elongated bodies that make them look more like stick insects. Water scorpions lay their eggs in mud of vegetation near the water line and prefer slow moving or still water habitats. The family is highly adaptable and has species adapted to hypersaline salt lakes and brackish waters as well as an eyeless, cave-dwelling species found in hypoxic water in Movile cave, Romania. Water scorpions are predators that target invertebrates, tadpoles, and small fish. Their bites are painful to humans, but not dangerous.
(Image: a Ranatrinid water scorpion held on someone's hand. It is a very long, skinny insect with long, slender legs and forelimbs adapted into raptorial claws. A long-strait tail almost as long as the body emerged from its back. Its grabbing limbs are interacting with another, smaller insect. End ID)
Some true water bugs with a disputed taxonomy are the backswimmers, pygmy backswimmers, and Helotrephids. Typically, backswimmers are placed in the family Notonectidae while the other two are in the family Pleoidea, but some taxonomists argue they should all be in the same family. Backswimmers and pygmy backswimmers have similar body plans and lifestyles, with size being the main difference between them. Both are beetle-like bugs that swim with their bellies facing up. The hind pair of legs is longer than the first two pairs and hairy, allowing them to be used as paddles when swimming. Unlike many other water bugs, which primarily crawl around their habitats and act as ambush predators, backswimmers are powerful swimmers who actively hunt prey as large as tadpoles and small fish. Their front limbs are raptorial and they are capable of flight. Pygmy backswimmers similarly swim upside down and hunt prey, tiny invertebrates in their case. Both groups also have a soft part on their abdomens they use to store air bubbles, which can be refreshed by a trip to the surface. Helotrephids are a sister group to the pygmy backswimmers and are less adapted to swimming, instead crawling for most of the time. Backswimmers can deliver a painful but non-dangerous bite to humans while both pygmy backswimmers and Helotrephids are too small to pierce human skin with their proboscises.
(Image: a backswimmer using surface tension to cling to the surface of the water. It is an insect whose back legs are much longer than the others and have hairy, paddle-like tips used for swimming. It is light brown and has large eyes. end ID)
Similar in appearance to backswimmers are the water boatmen and pygmy water boatmen of families Corixidae and Micronectidae (pygmy water boatmen were formerly classified as also being in Corixidae). The easiest way to tell water boatmen and backswimmers apart is to look at their posture while swimming. While backswimmers swim belly-up, water boatmen swim belly-down. Their four back limbs are long and end in scoop-like tarsi that act as paddles while the forelimbs are shorter and hairier and used for swimming instead of the raptorial forelimbs that backswimmers have. Like backswimmers, water boatmen are powerful swimmers that hunt prey. Unlike all other true water bugs, not all water boatmen are predatory. there are omnivorous, detritovorous, and even entirely herbivorous species that feed on algae and aquatic plants. Note that in some places, water boatmen are known as lesser water boatmen while backswimmers are called greater water boatmen.
(Image: a water boatman clinging to a green fiber. It is a beetle-like bug with long, hairy back legs and shorter front legs. Its body is brown, with numerous small, yellow stripes along the back. End ID)
Two closely related families of true water bugs that live along the shore rather than in water are the toad bugs of Gelastocoridae and the velvety shore bugs of Ochteridae. Both are named for their appearance, with toad bugs being warty and capable of jumping while the velvet shore bugs are known for the extremely fin hairs some species have that helps keep them dry. Toad bugs are predators of other insects who leap onto prey and hold it down with their raptorial front legs. Velvety shore bugs are believed to hunt similarly and can fly.
(Image: a toad bug held on the tip of someone's finger. It is a small, beetle-like bug with a lumpy back and head and short, grasping forelegs. End ID)
The last well-known of the true water bugs are the closely-related families Aphelocheiridae and Potamocoridae, about which almost nothing is known.
(Image: a member of Aphelocheiridae, a small, beetle-like bug with grasping front legs. End ID)
True water bugs are a very successful group, living in freshwater and (in some species) brackish water all over the world, with only the poles being too cold for them. If you spend enough time around fresh water, you will probably see one eventually. If you do, take a look, but don't touch. You never know which ones can give you a very painful bite.
(Image: a giant water bug with its wings extended, standing on grass. End ID)

So much half-eaten food is discarded by the hordes of tourists that visit Visakhapatnam that it is almost always feast-time for the black crows here, whose numbers as a result have exploded, they now a chronic cawing nuisance on the shore. But the crows too like to rest on occasion but cannot do so on the boulders right on the beach for they risk random attack by people. Consequently, they fly out and onto the boulders deeper in the sea where, being out of reach, they can rest unmolested. The remarkable thing is that no avian predator here - the eagles - attempts to kill and eat them, apparently their flesh is as unsavory as their presence, and, further, the crow, for all his diminutive size - about three-quarters of a foot - has fairly fearsome talons. Note the startling contrast between the bare boulders on the shore, utterly sterile and devoid of seaweed - apparently seaweed needs to be continually bathed in sea-water if it is to survive, periodic tidal immersion inadequate - while the more immersed boulders are rich in green seaweed that essentially coats the rocks green, and on whose velvety downy surface the black braying birds rest. Sometimes they bend down as though pecking on tit-bits amidst the seaweed, perhaps sea-bugs, although given the distance I was unable to categorically determine whether such nibbling was in fact occurring. But it is a wonderful place to rest - a little littoral island rock, sea on all sides. I am not sure, but I think they jump up on occasion to avoid being splashed by a wave striking the boulder.

It Had To Be You
Chapter 3 of my Husk x Fem!Reader on my AO3 account.
CW: Murder, Suggestive Themes, and Alcohol
"Well, It's been a pleasure talking to you." you smiled.
"It sure has! See you for dinner?" she bounced on her toes
"Oh, I'm afraid not, I'll be going to a show tonight."
Her smile faltered slightly, "That's fine, I hope you have fun."
She skipped away to the elevator, swiftly walking in and leaving you in your door way.
"I sure hope I do."
---
You straightened your posture, a small sigh leaving your lips as you walked back into your room, locking the door behind you. Scanning your floor, your eyes meet with a small, leather bag to the side of your bed. With a huff, you picked it up and set it on your bed, walking over to your vanity to see all of your makeup and brushes neatly laid out, at least Alastor was polite. Grabbing a few brushes and products, you placed them into a small compartment of the bag, quickly walking over to your closet to look for what you'd be wearing on stage that night.
Opening your sliding closet, all neatly arranged thanks to Alastor, you sifted through the many skirts, tops, and dresses to find a dazzling black sequenced dress with matching black gloves. You picked it up with a smile, slowly shifting it in your hands to see the sparkling nature of it's fabric.
You neatly folded it in your bag, setting a pair of satin high heels on top, making sure they lay flat before snapping the bag into place with small clasps. You walked to your vanity, smiling at your reflection, fluffing your hair as you did, "I have a feeling this performance is gonna be a good one!"
---
"God dammnit-" you muttered, messing up your eyeliner for the third time that night.
You quickly grabbed makeup wipes and cleaned your smeared look before drawing right back over it to finish your cat eye, and thankfully, by the mercy of Lucifer, you finally got it to look even.
A knock on your door made you jump, "Hurry up in there ya broad! You're up in two," A gruff voice said, must've been a stage hand or something of the other.
Grabbing your sheen gloves from your bag, you slipped them on, adjusting your fingers into the silky material, clinking the tip of your heel onto the floor.
You glanced in the mirror, placing a few strands of hair into the rest of the bunch before straightening back out, trotting to the door and opening it, only to get met with a blast of cigar smoke and cheap liquor. You think you would've grown a tolerance after six decades, but you still had to try your best to suppress a cough festering in the back of your throat. Your careful gloved fingers traced the rusted railing as you walked up the stairs, hesitant in an effort to not trip on your dress. Deciding to then swiftly scan the back of the stage and red curtains, which shielded you from the harsh lights and stares practically oozing from the rest of the bar, even behind the thick fabric.
You stepped into the middle of the stage, taking in a nervous breath while smoothing down your dress, brushing off the stares of seedy demons that prepared the show in the back.
A shaky voice crept into the speakers, "Now, I'm happy to announce what you all have been waiting for," he cleared his throat, "y/n, l/n!" He finished, the curtains getting slowly pulled back as you walked forward, revealing your elegant form.
A few demons cheered, while others whistled, some even booed, but nonetheless, you forced a smile onto your velvety black lips, small hands grabbing the microphone, "how're y'all doin' tonight?" you opened, using the same line you had used countless times before, some how never getting old.
They cheered a bit louder, especially when you fluttered your eyelashes, making sure to blow them a kiss and a wink.
Your silky gloves gripped the metal in your hands as you began to sing.
"When marimba rhythm starts to play," you began, blinking against the harsh stage lights as you sauntered around the edge of stage.
"Dance with me, make me sway," you moved your hips to the background music, "Like the lazy ocean hugs the shore,"
Demons jeered, "Hold me close, sway me more,"
"like a flower bending in the breeze, bend with me, sway with ease," you continued, dipping down to a particular demon who, unfortunately, sandwiched a bill in between your breasts.
You faked a smile at him, taking it out of your cleavage, "When we dance, you have a way with me," another soul tried to grab your foot, "Stay with me, sway with me,"
"other dances may be on the floor," you walked back to the center of the stage, "Dear, but my eyes will see only you,"
You placed the microphone back into its place in the holder, "Only you have that magic technique, when we sway, I grow weak," you bent into the end, fluttering your eyelashes.
"I can hear the sounds of violins," you strained, attempting to sing over many demons whistling at your last move, "Long before it begins, make me thrill as only you know how,"
They calmed, "Sway me smooth, sway me now," you moved your hips and shoulders to your own singing, "Other dancers may be on the floor, dear, but my eyes will see only you,"
You pointed to the mosh pit of demons, "Only you have that magic technique, when we sway, I grow weak,"
"I can hear the sound of violins, long before it begins," you popped your hip out, arm stretching to the chandelier, exposing most of your leg, "Make me thrill as only you know how, sway me smooth, sway me now."
A bustle of the sinners jeered, whistled, and threw drinks or money to the stage, the only thing you responded with was a shaky smile, and your next song.
---
You grasp the microphone, hands shaking a bit, "Thank you all so much for coming out tonight," you pressed your gloved hands to your lips, quickly extending your hand to blow a kiss.
"Bye, bye, now," you finished, sauntering off the stage, your smile breaking right when the curtains fell, your shaking hands running through you hair.
"fuck," you murmured, sitting at the bottom of the filthy steps, head held in your hands. You hated your performances now, they used to be nice, used to be more lighthearted. Now they made you want to gag, want to rip your hair out for standing it, for doing it for the money. The demons watching your little shows always tried to grab you, tried to rip you off the stage, always jabbing disgusting remarks to you about your body, about what they wanted to do to you.
You almost broke that night.
You almost broke down on stage, you couldn't do another one of those damn performances, or sing one of those awful, cheesy songs that the bar always recommended you to sing.
You thought this would be temporary, that all of the erotic performances would jump start your career, that they would push you into what you really wanted to be, your own person. You never thought you'd be doing this for six decades.
You pushed on your knees, propelling you upwards. You sighed as you walked to your dressing room, eyeing the bugs that crawled over the concrete floors, and the cracks in its surface. You pushed on the door, swinging it open, before plopping yourself down on the stool in front of the vanity. You mumbled a curse under your breath as you grabbed makeup wipes, making sure to remove the caked on foundation from your skin.
You slouched into the seat as you finished removing the makeup, taking all your hair into a loose, messy bun before standing to rummage through your bag. You grabbed a small, black spaghetti strapped tank top and pair of grey baggy sweatpants. You weakly smiled at the comfortable outfit before slipping it onto your tall form.
You sighed in satisfaction, quickly pulling all of your possessions into the bag before leaving the old, grimy dressing room. Other demons eyed your painfully casually form, giving you the once over before sneering at your more than exhausted features.
You turned the knob of the back door exit, taking in a deep breath of fresh air as you looked up into the starless, hellish night sky. You smiled faintly, hand readjusting its grip on your bag, before starting your walk back to the hotel. No matter how many times you had tried to convince yourself, you still loved hells night sky, even if it looked positively maroon, instead of a brilliant blue, it stood out in its own way.
Your tennis shoes hit the sidewalk softly, a small breeze running through your hair, doing little to calm your aching nerves, and if even the sky wouldn't help you right now, maybe it was finally the time to pay the hotels bar a visit.
---
You pushed on the hotels front door lightly, head poking into the gap as you looked around, it had taken longer than you thought it would take to walk back, and by the looks of it, everyone had already gone to sleep, so much for a drink. You felt a bit defeated until you fully walked into the establishment, now able to fully see that the cat demon was still manning the bar.
You took a sharp intake of air, swiftly walking over to the bar, a drink idea already popping into your head as you slapped your bag onto the floor, alerting the half asleep bar tender.
"Jesus!" he sharply looked up to you, his brows tightly knit, "Fuck, don't fucking do that so late," he held his head in his clawed hands, a few beer bottles emptied beside him.
You muttered an even tireder, "sorry."
He looked up to you, brows still knit, "what do ya want anyhow?"
"a bourbon," you quickly replied, "oh yeah, can I smoke here?" you added, already fishing a pack of cigarettes and lighter out of your bag.
He slowly nods, hands sluggishly reaching over to the bottle you requested, eyes trained on you out of pure confusion as he let out a small laugh that was in his throat, "I had no idea you'd be the type to drink er anything," you looked up to him, lighting your cigarette, "ya just seem so," he hesitated, thinking of the right word, "Not tha type."
you smiled weakly, taking a few puffs of the tobacco, "I get that a lot."
He finishes your drink silently, sliding it over to you as he cracked open his own beer.
You quickly grab the glass, taking a mighty swig of the alcohol, a warm sensation lining your throat, giving you a minute buzz.
He winces at your harsh eyebags, and worn out expression.
You notice his staring, "so, your names Husk, right?"
He nods, albeit a bit gruffly, "my name is y/n, I don't do the whole nickname thing," you gesture your hand, taking another puff from your cigarette.
He stares at your shaken up form, noting your messied hair, remnants of glittery makeup, and catches a peak of the sequenced dress in your bag, "So uh, what the hell were ya doin'?"
You look up to him, a bit surprised he was interested, "Did a gig at a bar, jus singing n shit," he nods, already having an idea you had done something to do with entertainment, "It's fuckin terrible," you finish, rubbing you eyes in your hands, a sad smile on your lips.
He nods, understanding your discomfort, "how long have you been working?" you quickly reply, "sixty-four years."
He takes a sharp intake of breath, not expecting the sheer length of your career, "sheesh, now that's a long time," you nod, taking another long swig of your drink.
Husk takes a few sips of his beer, eyes now trained on the tv lightly playing in the bar, your eyes also occasionally darting to the melodramatic drama playing on the screen.
You go to take another drink out of your glass, quickly noting nothing was left, "I'll uh," you scratch your neck, a bit embarrassed, "see you around?" he nods as you put out your cigarette.
"see ya," he murmurs, eyes quickly training back onto the tv, his beer never leaving his tired lips.
You sigh, standing up off the bar stool, grabbing your bag and heading for the lobby staircase, the elevator flush next to the stairwell.
You lazily tap your desired button, feeling the uncomfortable jolt and flicker of the elevator, before ascending to your floor. You slouch in your place, a yawn leaving your lips when the elevator dings to signal you've reached the wanted spot.
You quickly walk out of the confined space, being overtly mindful of the quickness of the doors closing. The doors close with a snap, only minimally catching you off guard, you thread a finger through your hair, trotting off to your room.
Your tired fingers fish through your mess of a purse in a try to fin your key, thankfully finding it fast, you unlock your room, gliding in and give the light switch a click.
You sigh at the sweetly colored room, a few empty suitcases lay in the corner, and your bed lay a tad messed up, but none of it mattered, you instantly felt better by just looking at the comfort your new room brought. Walking over to your vanity, you set your bag onto the small table, padding over your cream colored carpet to your white bed, flopping face first into its covers, giving a small spring back from the force.
You faintly smiled into the sheets, letting out a deep breath you didn't know you were holding in. Slowly sitting up, your hand fumbled up to your bra straps clinging to your back, fumbling with the clasps until you got the underwear off, your baggy sweatpants following closely along onto the floor just next to your bed.
You re-positioned yourself, snuggling your face into the pillows of your bed, hand tugging on your lamps string, turning off your rooms lights.
Fluttering your eyes open, you looked up to see the black mass of night, glancing over to your open window, what must have been a thousand sparkling lights staring back at you from the city, honks from cars speeding down freeways complimenting the bustle of the city.
You hated to admit it, but sometimes hell didn't seem half bad, when you weren't doing god awful performances, that is.

ALOHA!!! May I please request an scenario with Mermaid!Shouto?? idc what it's about, I just need more!!!!! WHEN I IMAGINE HIM, I SEE PERFECTION!!!!! ❤️❤️THANK YOU FOR THE ORIGINAL REQUEST OF IT AL WELL!! You're a lifesaver!!!!
A week.
That was how long it had been since you encountered the gorgeous mermaid. His unique hair and eyes were haunting you - even in your sleep - causing you to tremble in anticipation of the next meeting.
Todoroki Shouto.
His name had been repeated countless number of times, to the point where it’s etched deeply in your brain, and hanging on your lips. Every attempt to shove him out of your mind was futile, he’d always manage to bug you one way or another, deathly persistent. Everything about him just nagged at you. You could still remember how his voice sounded like, velvety, smooth and just extremely… appealing.
“I’ll see you soon.”
With each passing day, the urge to meet him grows even more. It was almost unbearable, really, and you find yourself conjuring up different methods to meet him once more.
Should I fall into the sea again?
…On hindsight, that’s an idiotic move. What are the chances of me drowning? 90%?
Hmm, how about sitting on the shore and waiting for him to drop by?
But what if he doesn’t come?
Multiple thoughts swirled in your mind, buzzing, thrumming and humming. Your mind felt numb with thoughts of him and only him. Frustration began to grapple with your logic, waves of annoyance and irritation flooding you.
It’s not as though you were someone to him. If anything, the best label you can slap on your relationship with him would be strangers.
But he did promise, didn’t he?
Doubts began to surface all at once. They were ugly and ate at you, but you refused to succumb to it.
Don’t overthink it.
Though for some odd reason, you had a feeling that you’d never meet him if something wasn’t done. Call it a gut feeling, but it was niggling at you, compelling you to take action. It’s now or never.
And so you did. As of now, you were sitting under the inky sky, dotted with many little glowing dots, with the sea as companion.
This is like déjà vu.
The gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shore soothes your jittery heart, reminding you not to bring your hopes too high. A sigh escapes your lips, as time inches forward slowly, the scenery remaining the same as it was when you had arrived.
One hour…two hours…
By the time the third hour flew by, you were nodding off to sleep, eyelids weighing down heavily, and you began to slide your eyes shut, exhaling a breath.
Just for a little… I’ll just close my eyes for a little.
In your sleepy haze, you failed to realize the change in waves hitting the shore; they were now coming in quicker, ripples forming on the surface from a disturbance. A pair of legs and a familiar mop of bi colored hair entered your line of sight, before the carpet beneath you was pulled, dragging you into darkness.
That can’t be him. He doesn’t have legs, he has a tail.
Oh if only you knew how wrong you were…
For now you rest in his arms once more, his legs entangled with yours.

Warning: Mentions of suicide, Gore.
Words: 1.4k
Her house was stone cold, the smell of iron beating at her nose with venom so strong she thought she will puke- and she did, all over the once beautifully white rug that lay in the living room, now stained a ruby red of her mother’s corpse, her insides sprawled out beside her, behind her, and to the sides of her.
Clutching her stomach with one hand, she tried to stand up while supporting her weight with the other, warm tears spilling over her cheeks as she sobbed, yelled and vomited more. The sight was mortifying and she wanted to get out. She wanted to run away. She wanted to die.
Stumbling out of her house through the back doors she fell once again, retching as soon as her eyes adjusted to the listless eyes of her father, staring at her with a pain wrecked face. Though in a better condition than her mother, her father still bore cuts all over his body, his face, everywhere- he was near unrecognizable, apart from his distinctive, once beautifully shining hazel eyes.
She screamed then, an ear-piercing scream that would shake one to the very bottom of their heart, and then she ran, and ran, and ran, until she reached the bridge crossing of the Sacred Waters- the legend goes that a Prince of Ethereal Beauty dwells at the deepest part of these waters, coming to the surface only every odd year to take a bride one of the beauties of the village she now tried to run away from. The village that killed her family and was most likely now going to hunt her down for supposed witchcraft.
Though her heart hammered with pain and fear, she climbed to the other side of the wobbly railing that surrounded the bridge and steadied herself for a jump. She didn’t want to die, but instead live a happy and fulfilling life, possibly finding a humble man to wed and have a couple of children. That’s the kind of life she wanted- and now she was accused of some superstitious nonsense that her village still claimed to believe, and death at own hand seemed like a much nicer option than being burned, lynched or fed to wild animals.
Taking in one last breath of air she jumped, and as she dived under the water she swore she saw a man of unthinkable beauty stand at the shore of the lake, his face confused, and yet relaxed.
Something solid pressed to her chest, then again, and again, and then something warm and soft pressed to her lips, pinching her nose with what she supposed to be fingers. Her consciousness was dazed, but she could still understand the efforts of someone trying to save her. But she didn’t want to live- she wanted the opposite; to die and finally be free, together with her mother and father.
“You’re awake, finally.” A soft, velvety voice spoke above her, heaving a sigh and then the voice grew further step by step which the mysterious voice took.
She retched onto the marble floors, her mouth spurting the waters from the lake, and then heaved, her lungs burning, throat burning, eyes burning. She felt like a cursed creature, realizing that whenever she went only trouble seemed to follow her. “Where am I?” she spoke, her voice surprisingly steady, ignoring the fierce gaze into her scalp from behind her, no doubt where her saviour stood.
She was in a place of beauty she never once saw in her village. Who knew, maybe she did manage to die and even got herself to heaven? The sky was of the brightest blue, bug sun overhead, and the marble that she managed to stain was snow-white, and summer-warm. She was in paradise.
“You’re in my Palace.” The voice spoke again, and she could not help but relish in the presence of such a smooth, soothing voice.
“Did I die?”
“Did you want to?”
She shut her mouth then, and ever so slowly turned to face the person. Some strands of the person’s hair was flowing past their broad shoulders, the colour being a light, pretty brown reminding her of chestnut. And as her eyes roamed over the person’s face, she realized it was that same man she saw when diving into the Sacred Waters. He was beautiful, with his nose slim and slender, eyes deep and sharp, like a cat’s, brows soft but creased in the middle, lips set into a straight line of seriousness, his teeth, so perfectly cared for and white, gnawing on the upper part of it. “I did.”
“Why?”
“Where am I?” it was hard to believe that the person she spoke with had actually been a man, not female, because she believed that such slender and prime beauty could belong only to a female of a fine and refined class of nobility.
“You’re in my Palace.” He provided to her as he did before- that same answer with that same expression.
“And where is this Palace of yours, then?” her hands shook as she tried to steady herself and stand up.
“Under the Sacred Waters that you jumped into and decided to die in.” he bit back, closing his eyes and bringing his hand to his face as he sat up, leaning onto the hand as if it was his last chance of hanging on a loose piece of patience.
Her heart jumped in her ribcage and her knees wobbled again, sending her hurtling away from the man of calm and beauty, away, away, away where he could not find her. Away.
As she ran, her eyes roamed over the borders of the palace- all around was water, crystalline blue water, and as she gazed down into that water she saw the bridge she jumped down from, a little murky and disoriented, but she could clearly recognize it, and the small figures atop it with torches in their hands.
A shudder wrecked her body then, realizing that the man perched atop the throne just minutes ago had not been lying how she thought he was, he was no madman, how she thought he was- he was purely serious as he spoke, no trace of humour and nothing but truth.
“You can go back if you want.” The velvety voice spoke from behind her. “Though assuming that your frantic behaviour and running all over the place while you were down there is somehow connected to the villagers now running around with pitchforks and torches, I highly not recommend it at all.”
She jumped away from him, anger filling her eyes. “Why did you save me?”
“I don’t like people dying.” Simple and clear- she felt that this was how he was, a simplistic man filled with boredom. “You don’t have to ask, but you can stay. You’re not welcomed there, as it seems, so I’ll give you some time to stay here. Get yourself together, and prove your innocence or something.”
“I want them dead.” She muttered, tears in her eyes and throat gagged with a lump of something.
“Murder is never an option if life, Deary.”
“Tell them that.”
A hum escaped the man and then he turned, grabbing her wrist and dragging her away from the edge of the palace. “If you stare into the abyss for too long, it begins to stare back at you. Ever heard of it?”
“What are you doing?”
“Leading you away from the abyss. I’ll have to prove to you that even if the lives of those you loved were taken, your is still present and now all that’s left is to cherish it through all pain and suffering. It’s what you have left.”
She kept quiet as he spoke in a monotonous voice, listening to every crevice in his words and memorizing every denture in his face. “You’re beautiful…” she muttered, then clamped her mouth shut, embarrassed to the core of the earth and back a thousand times.
He froze for a second, then chuckled and spoke, “I mean, I would love to be called that till the moment you leave, but if something I usually go by JeongHan, and I am the Prince of the Sacred Waters, the Deep Blue Sea is my Palace.”

The best places to eat fresh seafood in and around Cairns
Tropical North Queensland has hundreds of kilometres of coastline starting at Mission Beach in the south and ending at Torres Strait in the north. It’s where barramundi, coral trout and prawns are listed as top exports and there’s even a town called Flying Fish Point, on the mouth of the Johnstone River.
While casual fish and chip shops still pepper the coastline – enticing you to sample the region’s fresh seafood by the shore – the local food scene has changed and evolved.
Here are 7 of the best places to eat seafood in and around Cairns.
Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront, Cairns
Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront has been a local institution for about three decades. Back in the ’90s, it’s where fat-cat politicians, lawyers and journalists used to sit in their power suits over long, languorous lunches. While the restaurant has long since upped stumps from its original location – it’s now beneath Cairns Harbour Lights Hotel – you can’t come to Dundee’s and not have seafood.
Diners eddy and flow here all day, along with the tide, while overlooking glistening water and fleets of fishermen, flitting to and from the reef. Keep it simple with a bucket of bugs and prawns or go for the Ultimate Seafood Experience, an opulent tower of mud crab, yabbies, prawns, oysters, scallops, bug tails, lobster, calamari and mussels.
You can also anchor yourself to a table at Dundee’s at the Cairns Aquarium, where you can admire the shellfish, crustaceans and oceanic creatures you are about to ingest. This is for serious pescatarians only.
Nu Nu, Palm Cove
These days, in tropical North Queensland, chefs such as Nu Nu’s Nick Holloway create sophisticated seafood dishes such as wok-fried North Queensland mud crab, with tamarind, sweet pork, market greens, jasmine rice and ginger broth.
A table on the expansive deck at Holloway’s lauded Palm Cove restaurant, mentioned in our favourite restaurants list, is prime real estate as it overlooks the Coral Sea and Double Island and a stand of Insta-friendly palm trees that bend into the wind.
Osprey’s Restaurant, Port Douglas
Motor further north, past Kewarra Beach, to find Osprey’s Restaurant at Thala Beach Nature Reserve. The restaurant, which is named after the large fish-eating bird of prey, the osprey, is perched on the headland like an eyrie offering views over the Coral Sea, garbed in a velvety swathe of blue.
Order the line-caught yellowfin tuna tataki with tempura ginger nori roll to start and the reef fish of the day with tom yum sweet potato, coconut rice, cassava and Asian herb salad to finish.
Salsa Bar & Grill, Port Douglas
The food at Salsa Bar & Grill in Port Douglas also sails beyond the beachside classic of fish crumbed and battered with a pile of chips on the side.
Keep it simple with Old Bay spice school prawns with chilli and charred lime aioli, salt and pepper calamari and linguine pepperincino with a flashy little fry-up of Tableland red claw.
Flames of the Forest, Port Douglas
The gorgeously styled Flames of the Forest is listed as one of the best food experiences in Queensland. It’s where you will find a dining room set up on the forest floor under trees festooned with flickering fairy lights in Australia’s only rainforest dining experience. It’s as far away from a fast-paced dining scene as you will get and as romantic and charming as a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Tuck in at a communal tables of 10 amongst locals and visitors and enjoy locally sourced seafood in dishes such as pan-seared coral trout on sautéed seasonal greens with a lemon myrtle beurre blanc and house-made prawn tortellini.
The Beach Shack, Kewarra Beach
The Beach Shack, located near to Kewarra Beach Resort and Spa, is a seasonal eatery that opens May to January 1, in the dry season.
Follow the footprints in the sand along Kewarra Beach and watch the wind riffle the palm trees as you wait for a dozen oysters to be shucked to order.
Prawn Star, Cairns
The best thing about eating seafood in Cairns is that you can choose to scrimp or splurge. The Esplanade is still a top spot to enjoy a casual seafood dinner and Prawn Star on the harbour-facing side of the city – Marlin Marina – is squarely aimed at those who like to keep it casual.
Hearty eaters should opt for the share platter of prawns onboard the rustic eat-in trawler. Sit and sip on a cheap-as-chips beer and toast to fresh seafood in and around Cairns and how far the food scene here has come.
TOP 3 TAKEAWAY SEAFOOD OPTIONS
Ocean World Seafood Market: This locally-owned business has been operating for almost two decades. Locals will always refer this place for its fresh seafood. Trust in their wisdom and order local wild-caught barramundi and a few crumbed prawn cutlets.
Apex Milk Bar: Trace the route of the local high-vis colony of tradies and you will find them communicating like a bunch of squawking seagulls about where to source their fish for lunch. The squawks become deafening near to the Apex Milk Bar where they gather for a Far North Fish Burger (mackerel, tartare, cheese, pineapple and jalapeños).
Prawn Star Cairns: There are now a total of three Prawn Stars barnacled onto the D Finger Wharf at the Marlin Marina. Visit one of the trawlers to eat A-grade prawns, mud crabs and painted crays served with seafood sauce.
WHERE TO BUY FRESH SEAFOOD IN CAIRNS
AquaVerde Redclaw: Visit this hatchery and farm on the Atherton Tablelands to purchase native freshwater crayfish.
Ocean World Seafood Market: Local red claw, mud crabs, crayfish, barramundi and prawns make regular appearances at this restaurant where the counter is always cramped with locals and travellers.
Preston Fresh Seafood: If chef Nick Holloway, of Palm Cove’s Nu Nu, gets his seafood from Preston Fresh in Smithfield, then you know you’re onto a good thing. Live mud crabs are available in store along with fresh line-caught reef fish.
