Tecna: The Thesis

This one has been a long time coming I know

First Things First

The first words I have for Tecna in my character profiles are tech nerd child, but she has so much more depth than that, even more than I’d ever originally planned

One of the things I really wanted to get across with Tecna is that is not and has never been an ice queen or unfeeling or cold, just bad with communication and her way of showing affection is atypical

While writing s1, I wrote her as autistic coded but was very hesitant to confirm her as autistic since I really did not want to accidentally write her autistic traits in an offensive or just misrepresentative way, but, after seeing my portrayl of her landed well with a lot of commenters who were part of the autistic community, I decided to do my research and properly commit to portraying her as autistic (whilst of course, never making it her full personality, just a part of who she is)

To me, Tecna is one of the most compelling characters to write, since she has a huge heart and holds a lot of love for her family and the Winx and, over the course of the seasons, we see her get better at communicating that whilst never forcing herself to conform or change to do it the ‘normal’ way

Family Matters

Aside from Riven, I think Tecna is the one who benefited the most from the changes I made to her family

I gave her a big sister and a little brother as well as loving parents who raised them all in a farm on the domestic side of Zenith, that focuses on farming and crops

After I committed to writing Tecna as autistic, I chose to portray nearly her entire family as neurodivergent, her dad is autistic and has ADHD, her mom has dyspraxia, her brother has ADHA as well as dyspraxia, her big sister being the only neurotypical one

The reason for this was because i wanted to portray her parents as always has taking Tecna’s needs/triggers into account and accommodate for all of their childrens needs and never try to change who they are; this is why from the get go, Tecna is unapologetic about who she is and what she needs, having never once been taught or pushed to mask.

Tecna in the OG always had a sense of absolute confidence and in my mind, giving her an understanding family who always embraced her as she was would be a great way of explaining why that is.

Also, I just really wanted to give her a loving, fluffy family since so many other families in the rewrite have issues and problems

SPOILERS FROM HERE FOR SEASON 3, THE OMEGA ARC AND SEASON 4 PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NOT CAUGHT UP!!!

A Frozen Loss

Now, from the moment I knew I was going to rewrite s3, I knew the Omega Arc was going to be one of the hardest and angstiest to write

i feel like both in the OG and in the fandom, Tecna can often be underrated and underused and I wanted to take the chance to show why I love this character so much and how she is an integral part of the group and there is no Winx without Tecna

In a sense, yes, Tecna is the brains of the group, she is the strategist and the one who comes up with a 27 step plan and the tech genius. But she is also the glue. She’s probably one of the most loved characters in the group, every single one of the girls and the boys have a very special and unique bond with Tecna, partially because of her odd way of showing affection and love

When Tecna cares about someone, she shows it even if she doesn’t always know how to say it, everyone knows it and loves her for it.

The Omega Arc also gave me a chance to show how resilient and smart Tecna is. Like I mentioned, she’s a strategist and a chronic overthinker and our girl doesn’t know how to back down, she’s determined and a survivor.

After the Omega Arc; surviving by herself for a week in a hostile planet and losing both her right leg and left hand, there is of course a huge shift in her character.

I chose to have her lose limbs to fully push how traumatic and life-changing the Omega Arc is not just to Tecna, but to all the Winx. After Omega, Tecna becomes a bit more comfortable with physical contact and starts to question her priorities and what she wants with her life… which leads us to-

Potential Can be Suffocating

One thing I thought I could do with Tecna was to have her shift her priorities when it comes to her plans for the future, going from being determined to be a buisness woman to realizing that she, while she still wants to be successful, it’s no longer all she wants

I think we all know how damaging hustle culture can be sometimes and, to incorporate smth a bit more personal, as someone who was always seen as ‘the smart one’/‘the one who’s gonna maintain us’ in the family amongst the cousins, I’ve felt the looming pressure of being the one in the family with the most ‘potential’. And as I’ve grown up, I’ve kinda realized that I don’t really want to throw myself into being solely dedicated to becoming this big buisness person like- obviously I want to be successful and be able to provide for myself, but I also want to have time for my writing and my family and myself, and I wanted to give this same kind of quiet realization to Tecna

For Tecna, it’s herself who puts on this pressure since, as a little girl she started seeing the modern side of Zenith as ‘superior’ in her mind and really wanted to leave the farm life to become exclusively focused on buisness, but as she grows up and, especially after Omega, she realized she wants to stay close to home and wants a quieter life, she still wants to be successful and to change the world, but it’s not all she wants anymore

Not sure if I explained that last point as well as I wanted to.

Thoughts Behind Her Main Relationships

Tecna

I love Tecna and Musa, they are very much a friendship between unconventional girls who don’t always come across as they mean to.

They both struggle to make friends for different reasons but the second they meet they realize that they are quite similar and so never push each other outside of their comfort zone at first and that’s what allows them to become close enough to then push one another.

Musa gets what makes Tecna tick and makes sure that she’s comfortable, she makes sure she gets her alone time and makes sure she doesn’t get overwhelmed.

Tecna gets that Musa doesn’t want to talk about herself so instead gets her to open up about her music.

And it’s through this that they start to trust one another and by s2 we see them knowing each other well enough to keep the other from spiraling.

When Tecna’s confused about her feelings for Timmy, it’s Musa who reminds her that it’s okay to not be ready for a relationship. And when Musa and Riven first kiss, it’s Tecna who suggests they take it slow since she knows how skittish they can both be.

At this point, they push one another when they need to.

They are crucial to each other’s growth.

Timmy

Now, my darlings, my softies, my introverted nerdy lovers

I know a lot of you were like- what the fuck do you mean they’re still not dating? Towards the start of s4 but I really wanted them to actually take their time before getting together

Timmy has a crush on Tecna since s1 and it’s in s2 where Tecna falls for Timmy slowly but surely, being a bit confused about her feelings since this is the first time she’s ever fallen in love. They have a talk and decide that neither are really ready for a relationship, Tecna because she’s still learning to communicate and just doesn’t feel ready in general, Timmy due to his anxiety and desire to work on himself before trying for a relationship

Once the feelings are out in the open, they are a lot less shy about being affectionate towards each other, since they know they’re headed for a relationship someday.

After Omega, any subtlety goes out the window for a bit, but they still aren’t official since, they really just- they know what they feel and what they have, that’s enough for them throughout s3, especially with everything going on (the song Tell Em by Sabrina Carpenter I feel really encapsulates how they feel about having a concrete label)

But now in s4, they are finally going to be dating and… honestly not much will change. That’s what I love most about Tecna and Timmy, they’re best friends in love. They act like best friends… who ocasionaly kiss. Love it!

Nabu

Now, Tecna was the last Winx to get her platonic soulmate, and I really loved introducing Nabu into the story through Tecna

These two just click from the very start, they are both have quite cool and calm demeanors that hide the ocasional gremlin behavior beneath the surface

They are each other’s impulse control and they trade a singular brain cell back and forth (Tecna has it most of the time).

I’m not really sure how to describe their relationship since, there are just some people in life with whom you just click for absolutely no reason, they just make sense to you in a way that very few people do, these two click and just want to hang out and protect one another

Who is Tecna in this Rewrite?

In this rewrite, Tecna is a young girl who isn’t the best at communicating

She is a girl who slowly grows, not in the sense that she changes, but in the sense that she grows into herself, learning more about herself, slowly learning how to communicate her love and care

The only thing that truly shifts are her priorities as she realizes just how important her family and friends are to her and, whilst she is a very ambitious girl and that doesn’t change, instead it is re-directed into… I actually can’t quite say how it is re-directed quite yet since that won’t be revealed until a lot later on

But my fave way of describing Tecna is just a girl growing into herself, into her love, into her hobbies, into her ambitions and into a wonderful woman.

Thoughs on bloom being the one with an obsession towards valtor first? (a switch to honestly all fics I've read)

S-Tier trope, I’ll take ten.

I think the reason fics (my own at least) tend to position Valtor as the one who falls first and harder, is that Valtor doesn’t really have a lot of obstacles towards that mindset. His villainy isn’t defined by some external moral structure or selfless goal — he wants power for power's sake, and basically just seems to do what he finds entertaining/fulfilling at the moment. His quest for world domination is kind of just to prove that he can, not because he has a grand vision for the future. If his desires were to change or shift towards a different goal, there would be no larger consequences for him if he indulged in that. Except for maybe the Trix rebelling, but he doesn’t seem very attached to them anyway.

Bloom meanwhile is motivated not by her own ambitions or personal desires, primarily. She's much more reactive rather than aggressive, responding to Valtor's attacks because he is upsetting life she's already built for herself with her friends. She's defending a moral good, on the large scale, and her friends' happiness on a smaller one. That's not to say she doesn’t have a more selfish investment in this fight! Where it does get personal for her is her wish for knowledge about her home, her parents and her past, something Valtor is irrevocably tied to.

The point I’m making is that, for Bloom to fully indulge in her — very canonical! — obsession with Valtor, it would have to keep its adversarial context, or she would be betraying her own moral code and loyalties. Valtor, on the other hand, loses nothing by committing to the bit. So it’s much easier to approach their dynamic with him being the aggressive pursuer, since it works well with his established priorities and goals.

That being said, just because it would require more set-up and b-plots does NOT mean a reversal of their roles wouldn’t work. On the contrary, it would be DELICIOUS in my opinion, and there's 2 ways it could go down I can think of, right now.

1. Hard Denial

Bloom keeps her moral code and personal loyalties intact by pouring aaaaaaaaaall of that festering obsession into pure! sleep-deprived! animosity! She is non-stop pursuing him to the ends of the world, drawing the ever-growing concern of everyone around her for her well-being, because fighting the good fight is good and all, but for god's sake, Bloom, chill. But she can’t! Because she hates him so much, and she just HAS to find him, and every second that she doesn’t spend throwing spells at him is a second of her life WASTED. Out of her way, gayboys, she's about to liberate her divine self from this mortal shell!!! Read: bite and gnaw at Valtor's shield spell while snarling obscenities that would make even the Ancestresses gasp. Valtor is both confused by the intensity and a little charmed.

Any and all thought is focused on the enemy she has to destroy, to the point he becomes the center of her universe. And if she lies awake thinking about him, that’s just because she is planning his demise, don’t u dare suggest otherwise!

2. The Angsty One

Bloom goes all in on her newfound fixation, fully self-aware, and thus has to deal with her moral code and other relationships suffering. I'm a firm believer in the Winx being inseparable ride or dies no matter what for each other, but since Valtor is very directly opposed to both Layla and Stella, aligning with him, defending him, or even going easy on him would definitely throw a wrench in the works. I'm too much of a wimp to write actual, substantial conflict between the girls, but I do think it would make for a GREAT plot. Alternatively, Bloom might split from the group for a while without telling them to go stalk do reconnaissance on Valtor, and learn more about their shared origins.

after that, you always made sure to offer jay a sweet smile and show him what you’ve learned in your classes throughout the week.

jay also liked to show off his skills! not only from his classes such as combat practices, but also cooking!

your friends told you that they assumed jay liked you when he learned traditional dishes from linphea to ease that home sickness you sometimes felt.

however, you were adamant that it was just friendly!

jay’s friends also teased him when you brought him plants that were native to solaria that you nursed until you could gift them to jay.

between this and your little hangouts, the tension was growing more and more until one day, neither of you could take it anymore.

the two of you held hands across the table, exchanging giggles and longing looks that made older couples around you look in admiration at such pure love.

after dinner, he took you back to alfea, but led you towards the forest that you two frequently hung out in after classes.

he asked you to give him a moment before kissing your cheek gently and going to set something up.

you watched him, unsure as to what he was doing, but trusted him.

jay was setting a telescope up, looking back at you to cast you sweet smiles before he was done.

"come over," he asked, extending his hand out for you to take, which you did.

jay maneuvered you to be in front of him, his firm chest against your back which caused your cheeks to flush.

Just wanna say this for those who also love color-coding characters, never be afraid to go out of the box with the colors you give character. Being a little unorthodox with assigning a character a color can lead to some really fun character designs. A good example of this is Winx Club. Instead of doing the basic colors associated with characters tied to specific elements, like fire characters are red, water characters are blue, and earth or nature characters are green. Instead in Winx Club, our fire character is blue, our water character is green, our nature character is pink, our light character is orange, our music character is red, and our tech character is purple (a color most associated with classic magic).

Yes! Very true! That's the fun of working off colors, there are themes and guidelines to work off of, but they're more light or suggestive guidelines.

Like pink is associated with femininity, tranquility, and being fragile. Yet pink powerhouse has arose in popularity, especially with hammers.

Doesn't hurt to be on the nose, but also doesn't hurt to shake things up. Colors are just very flexible.

Specialists need their own thing going on, and by that I mean power. I am not really interested in making Specialists be AS important in defeating the seasonal Big Bad as the Winx- as much as I love em I don't want to take away from the Winx importance, but I don't think it is engaging to have a group of guys literally called the specialists and then have very little special about them. Give them some magic! I'm personally fond of elemental magic or something like that- nothing over the top, nothing that would outshine the winx, but also not something that *competes* with them. And honestly, such a thing could be fun in Timmy's case because whatever his power may be, I don't actually think it would relate that much to his special niche. Like, if he's a water mage, that's actually very much COUNTER productive since he works with electronics. The best he can do is do the rice thing in a minute by getting all the water out of his phone, if he ever gets it wet. He would of course learn how to use his powers just like everyone else, but Timmy's inherent value is in his mind and the way he uses IT for his and his team's goals. Ohh I'm actually in love with this. Like, powers that the girls have are inherently related to their personalities- I don't know what comes first, power or personality, but it's just the way it is- and it is the same with the witches. (And boy do I love the bug lady) but for the guys- you get what you get. "I want electricity powers" "You're getting WATER" It would also be fun to see Timmy and Tecna do IT together in a way that isn't just "Timmy's good, but Tecna is SO MUCH BETTER NOW SHE WILL SHOW HIM YES" (full disclaimer, idk if it is always like that, been awhile since I've watched she show for the past year I've been sustained by nothing but my own increasing HCs and excellent rewrites of other peeps). Like, not only would they be doing very different versions of IT- Timmy goes to a military school so I think his area of interest and growth is a bit different than Techna's, but also: Techna has technology magic. Her way of working with it is WAY different than what Timmy does. They both learn and study, of course: if Techna didn't study, dick would she be good at it. Nuh uh. BUT she can actually FEEL the code, Timmy can't. So you know that meme that if a code is working, don't fix it, even if you see an extra line that's not needed etc? Well Timmy makes a code, it's working, Techna is like "Oh there's a dead weight here, let me just-" and before Timmy can stop her, she removes the bug with magic and the whole thing explodes (figuratively). Luckily Timmy always has a backup. And then when he can't GET the code to work at all, and he's 98% redbull and his teammates are about to kick him out, he's calling Techna like "SOS". Also, Timmy has to get the water out of Layla's phone like 8 times a week- OH WAAAAAAAAIT THIS MEANS HE'D HAVE SIMILAR POWERS TO LAYLA, OH BOY nope nope too long this will be its own post.

Honestly regardless of if Sky's parents are outright homophobic or not, they pretty much yeeted Diaspro(who is very Rei-coded in my au btw) at him and expected him to just roll with it so gay shit would just never come up naturally because they expected him to just be straight and even if he wasn't roll with the marriage out of obligation and duty.

So yeah I can see him just missing the fact that gay people exist.

Hi! What are your opinions on the leaks of the new season of Winx? Did you like the animation or the costumes?

My feelings on the new leaks are mixed.

On one hand, I'm a bit iffy on some of the designs (*cough* Stella *cough*), but on the other hand, I see where they were going with it and I think most of them will grow on me. The transformations I'm not hugely fond of, especially since Rainbow is leaning towards full reboot, so these being the starter transformations just doesn't sit right with me. They feel a bit busy while also being a bit lacking in personality (except Musa, who always get the best transformations and now is no exception). And the wings, while unique compared to the past few we've got, they all feel like the same shape. They are far more personalised, though, which I do like.

I am hard side-eyeing the fact that Musa seems to be lacking monolids in the final design. They could include that in the concept art, but not the actual show??

As for the animation, I think they're doing a pretty good job for the medium! I prefer 2D over 3D, especially for winx, but I understand why they made the decision, and I think they're making the best of it. I have a small feeling that the transformations will be a little lacklustre, but that tends to be a given in 3D if it's not a million dollar Disney movie. Honestly, as long as the story is good, the animation doesn't have to be amazing. Flora's transformation looks well-done for what we've seen.

Things I'm very excited about, though, are 1. the voice-acting, and 2. the new Alfea design.

The voices they used in the teaser are, imo, amazing choices! They sound, to me, like a good mix between the cinelume dub and the 4kids dub, which not only adds to the familiarity but also, the og voices were well cast and reflected the personalities in a way these new voices seem to do. Special mention to Flora's VA sounding Hispanic to reflect her being coded as Latina. Also, Tecna's made me laugh because she sounds like every emo character ever, and the contrast between her original personality and the emo voice is hilarious. Not bad, but certainly strange.

As for the new Alfea, I love it. It looks fantastic! It certainly sets a precedent for the environments we'll see throughout the show, and I really hope they live up to it. The classrooms look fabulous and the individual rooms we've seen (Wizgiz, Palladium, Faragonda, the dorm common area, the library) are all detailed in the best way. They have so much personality and the architecture is stunning. Even if the show ends up bad, if the scenery is even half as good as the concept art, I'll be happy.

Overall, I have my gripes, but I knew from the first announcement that I would. Rainbow can't please everyone, and even if they're doing a lot to please the older fans, it has to still be able to draw in a new audience. This reboot is a huge gamble for them, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic and try to not bash on it before it comes out.

hey, it might be a random question but what is your opinion on winx club pc/ps2 game? these versions specifically. since i see you dont like 4kids dub (i dont really like it either, but) the game was based on 4kids dubbing but is actually more similar to the original plot. yeah they still use sparx for domino and yeah the characters are voiced by 4kids actors. and that always made me wonder if the game was popular in italy? or it didnt have localized names? because well i played this game as a kid a loooot and i was always confused by "sparx" since im used to domino a lot more (im european) and i was wondering if it was also an issue for you? and i also wanted to mentioned theres like an obscure community dedicated to modding this game and i find it incredibly charming lol

Hello! First of all, I grew on the gba version, which is roughly a downsized 2D port of the original PS2/PC game with a lot of small changes to accomodate the hardware and differing game content (missing NPCs, different ones altogether, etc.).

That said, it has the same 4kids dub issues, which absolutely PISSED ME OFF as a kid. I hated how the dialogue didn't match anything said in the original or how the music was different and there wasn't a single track from the original. Imagine my reaction when Bloom transformed in the game and it did that song sequence instead of "We girls are the Winx". The same happened with the DS game Quest for the Codex having these fuckass 4kids voices and music clips. Incredibly frustrating experience. As far as I know, other italians were mildly annoyed by this. It wasn't until Rockstars that we had the full italian OST in a game (and then never again, it seems).

With that said, I did play and check out the PS2/PC game later as an adult!

As far as I know the PS2 game seems to have a bigger nostalgic fanbase for it in Italy, likely because they actually called the italian VAs to dub most of the main game and the powerpoint scenes. The 4kids dub clips and its inconsistencies remain. It sold well enough to have reprints for the PC version and the PS2 game was available on the official website shop for a very long time, before eventually the whole website was rehauled.

Also I heard there are a lot of people modding and recreating the game code to port it elsewhere from scratch. I'm surprised since I frankly wasn't impressed playing it as an adult (despite a lot of cool features) but I'm glad this game is so special to people! I wish we had a big budgeted game with a rehauled gameplay and other fixes set in Alfea. Instead we got lower budgeted minigame compilations
