not to engage in Discourse™️, but i would like to once again remind people that your local dnd actual play show is not a scripted television show that can or should follow the normal rules of narrative flow. this is a collaborative storytelling effort that requires the careful scheduling and coordination of a lot of people. the crown keepers deviation was scheduled before fcg's death. matt couldn't just fuck with all those guests' schedules bc something inconvenient happened just before they were slated to come on. i cannot say for certain, but i'm willing to bet real american dollars that the live show was scheduled and the venue was booked before fcg died too (tho maybe not, i'm not an expert in venue scheduling), but what better place to have the new sam character drop than in a theatre full of your most adoring fans? the most logical time and place to do it? maybe not, idk. but it sure was exciting for everyone watching. not sure when this downfall three-shot was initially scheduled, but there's no way in hell matt and brennan haven't been working on it together for MONTHS, if not even a year. sometimes, things happen when they happen bc that's when you get people in a room together. that's kinda the whole thing about dnd, why so many campaigns fizzle out—scheduling is fucking hard. it wasn't convenient when tal had to miss the session after the huge briarwood dinner fiasco in c1, which was leading directly into the arc that dealt pretty exclusively with his backstory, but that is life! ppl are busy! things happen when they can happen! if you don't like that events and story beats aren't hitting precisely when it would be most narratively satisfying for them to do so, perhaps dnd/ttrpg actual plays aren't for you! sometimes the dice tell the story, and sometimes the google calendar does! that's life!

The way it's depicted, Cybertron's pre-war societal issues had a lot less to do with Functionism and more to do with unchecked government corruption, massive wealth disparity, high layoff/unemployment rates, and disenfranchisement.
People were starving, they needed work, they weren’t getting any. Those that were fortunate enough to have work didn’t get paid living wages, much less have anything to spare for health contingencies. Even then stability’s still the luxury of the top few tiers; they live one cut away from layoff. The government cared only enough to exacerbate these issues by coming up with new ways for exploitation. Any attempts to protest or lobby were shut down through political persecution. As a result the masses turned increasingly to crime, drug abuse, thuggery, and violence. Extreme acts of terrorism gets lauded as long as the collateral damage's suffered by someone else. Morality and caution are eroded in the face of desperation.
Meanwhile the many alleged restrictions of Functionism are just lip service complaints made by the characters which doesn’t match up to most of the stuff we’re shown. Like if Rung could become a psychologist, a specialized job that requires higher education, despite having zero background on top of such a weird alt that he had to be classified as an ornament, then wow the functionists must be open-minded. If Dominus Ambus could be a scientist/doctor/explorer/author/successful social rights advocator during the height of functionist control with a minesweeper military-use alt (assuming that his secondary alt's the same as Minimus'), then wow the functionists must be accommodating. If Tyrest could become chief engineer under Nova and later go into law, a complete change of profession, while being a jet, then wow functionism's flexible. If Ratbat and Momus could become senators in a society that discriminates heavily against beastformers and labor frames, then wow that’s progressive. If every Prime from Nova to Zeta (with the exception of Sentinel, his alt’s a tank, he only has wings in Megatron Origin as part of his Apex armour upgrade), every single named pre-war senator other than Proteus and Momus, and four out of five of Nova Prime’s buddy club (only Galvatron's a grounder) were wingframes in a society that supposedly discriminates against wingframes, then wow that’s… inconsistent worldbuilding.
Megatron didn’t get into bloodsports or start a war because he didn’t get to pursue his dream job. He got driven into the pits and down the slippery slope of moral degeneration because his only source of income was cut off by the mine closure incident. People wanted livelihoods above anything else, it's the failure to provide that that made the miners go off the deep end and resulted in the death of a guard. If Functionism actually ensured that everyone could be guaranteed a job or at least minimized the unemployment rates, then stratified castes or not, there would have been no war. People, or societies, are generally capable of tolerating an incredible amount of injustice as long as the majority still have a chance at scraping by at the end of the day. But the government, and later Megatron, kept yanking the rug out from under everyone over and over until they no longer even had a chance at that; there's no other choice left but fight or die.
#I get that all prejudices are full of contradictions and inconsistencies meant to cater to the needs of the ruling class#for the sole purpose of upholding the social stratification#and tokenism is a common thing#but when you can pull out two or more examples as shown to the contrary for every one of a character's complaints#about how they suffered from functionism discrimination#then it's just a really bad case of inconsistent writing with all tell no show#like you cannot expect me to take the 'flightframes are low caste' thing seriously#because the entire pre-war upper class is almost exclusively comprised of flight frames. it's the ground vehicles that are the minority#honestly it just feels like something made up on the spot for Starscream's sake#and Thundercracker Skywarp Jetfire got benefitted by association#when was functionism introduced as a concept in the comic anyway#was it in that Megatron/Optimus conversation in Chaos Theory?#b/c I'm getting heavy retcon vibes there#I got no impression that functionism was even a thing that existed when reading Megatron Origin#Autocracy's written later but still no functionism#The main social issue is widespread poverty like I'm sure a lot of those ppl would be pretty happy if someone could assign them jobs?#the miners in Megatron Origin weren't mad because they had to work in the mines#They were mad because of the layoff and automation and knowing soon there's going to be no mines for them to work. and then they'd starve#idw transformers#transformers#maccadam

Lord of the Empty Isles
sci-fi/fantasy
set on a supposedly utopian planet recovering from a climate crisis, where bonds between people are able to be seen and manipulated (by some people)
follows a young man whose brother was cursed and killed by an infamous outlaw 5 years ago, and he’s finally able to curse him back - but it rebounds, as he’s somehow fatebound to the outlaw
to find a cure and save them both they have to team up, and he quickly finds out that the resources the outlaw is stealing go to the thousands of people neglected on prison planets, and he has to go against what he thought was right to help them
no romance, aroace MC, focus on platonic relationships
arc from netgalley, out june 6
#Lord of the Empty Isles#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I enjoyed this quite a bit! But I think it could have gone a bit further in places.#It has some interesting concepts and a great cast of characters and yay no romance#I do have a lot of thoughts and little critiques...#it's p obvious where the plot is going and what's going to happen#There’s clearly a lot gone into developing this bond system but to be honest I still don’t entirely get it?#It seems to emphasise that the bonds just reflect connections between people rather than predetermine anything; but also the plot kind of#hinges on Remy and Idrian having a predetermined bond? There are a lot of explanations of intricacies but a lot of it didn’t sink in idk#It’s promoted as QP but to me it reads as a general platonic relationship. I generally expect a depiction of a QPR to have like..#some form of acknowledgement/depiction of the form of their relationship being a particular (undefinable?) kind#with some specific level of commitment? I’m being picky maybe they mean queerplatonic themes/vibes rather than saying it’s a qpr#specifically. the centred platonic relationship is good! it doesn't seem like a qpr to me; at most what could one day be that#also things are solved quite quickly and easily in the end - both the curse and the downfall of the bad guy.#I feared it would go down the route of blaming things on the person in charge rather than emphasising systemic issues which it kinda does….#It’s impossible to ignore right now just how deeply people are willing to believe dehumanising propaganda - and how 'telling the truth'#and exposing the person in power as bad doesn’t actually do anything so that happening here made me go…… oh okay. well.#there is room for a sequel that maybe will explore this tho. idk#complaints aside - I do recommend this! It was fun and pretty unique.#aroace books#no romance

relistening to HtN rn and it really hits me how many moments of fun and hooting/hollaring there were in both GtN and HtN (even desite the latter's overcurrent of grief&disorientation) and how... absent those feelings were (in me as a reader) throughout NtN. like..... comparing the pure rush of Gideon returning in HtN, vs the uncomfortable, uneasy, uncanny valley feeling of first seeing Kiriona in NtN. the elation at realizing the narrator in HtN was Gideon, and the... dread? sadness? grief? of Nona realizing she's Alecto. GtN's "go loud" and its victory versus NtN's "go loud" and its grief (again) and weight.

one of the little things i love about 00 is how sumeragi got to be single and happy and marina got to be single and happy and how kati did get married and wasn’t made to settle down and stop being a commander to go be another female character cursed with “now that i’m married my personality is Wife” syndrome. that feldt never ended up with setsuna and that was okay, because love that doesn’t result in a relationship isn’t wasted love and the experience of loving someone is fulfilling in its own right. that louise gets her happy ending with saji, because a physically disabled mentally ill woman who’s been hospitalized for two years is no less worthy of love than anyone else.

Iwbft-RS crossover AU (I think)
In canon Aled wrote the into to universe city and plays guitar. I hc that he writes other music the same way he writes university city and used to write the letters to February. He just doesn't do anything with it, it's just for funnies.
Then Francis and Rowan meet backstage at a convention or something and rowan is internally fanboying because he LOVES University City and the official artist us talking to him and she's cute and she doesn't know who he is.
Anyway, flash forward to when the 5 of them start hanging out, and this is during The Arks hiatus, and frowan and frowaning, and jimmy and aled are hitting it off, and when they start bringing Daniel, he and Lister get along like a house on fire (to everyone's confusion)
One day, rowan, jimmy and Lister talk about how they have been in a music rut and how they're struggling to make any new music after everything that had happened.
Francis brings up that aled writes music (to which aled is fuming at her for) and jimmy asks if he can hear/see some of it. After a while Aled says yes.
Together, the 4/5 of them take the sings Aled had written and flesh them out abit. And eventually after a while (and a lot of convincing) The Ark release an EP with sings based on and credited too the Universe City Podcast.
To which the Internet losses it's mind because, 1, this is the first thing The Ark have released in a long while, and 2, wdym these two very different things know of each other.
