Not As It Seems: Chapter 4

Thomas, after a long day of working on projects assigned by Mr. Agrawal, let out a breath as he leaned back in his office chair. This is another routine he could get lost in too, he thinks. Typing on his keyboard, headphones on, music playing-- it’s nice. This is easy, this is okay. Monotony and something to get lost in.

Which makes the chaos of his life all the more exhausting when the peace is broken, his phone buzzing on the desk next to his mousepad. Fumbling, he threw his headphones down off of his head and picked up his phone, lifting it to his ear as he stood to walk into one of the small privacy offices. 

“Tom? It’s Sally. Nicholas-- We’re on our way to the hospital.” The panic in the nurses’ voice makes Thomas’ eye twitch and his fingertips crackle. He shoves them into his pocket, pushing his back against the wall. 

“What’s happened?” Despite the fact that he felt like he was going to throw up, Thomas managed a calm facade. 

“They think it’s a stroke, hon. Can you get off work early? It doesn’t look good.” 

Fuck. Shit. No, this can’t be happening. Three years of moving around and changing scenery and trying to make things work only to lose the thing he was so desperately trying to hang on to. This can’t happen. Anything but this. 

“I’ll--” The crack in his voice makes him flinch, another flicker at his fingertips, the fresh smell of rain fills the office as his control slips on his magic.. God, he has to keep it together. “I’ll call a taxi. I’ll be there as soon as I can, okay?”

“Alright, lad. I’ll keep you updated, yeah?”

The phone stays in its place by his ear for the next few minutes as Thomas takes deep breaths and tries to calm his nerves. Father would be okay. Nicholas Monroe was one tough man, and he would stick around. He’d promised Thomas he’d be there. He’d be okay. “You alright, Thomas?” David poked his head into the room, knuckles rapping against the door. His posh accent made his tone soft, and it took everything in Thomas to muster a small nod. “Yeah-- I-- My father is being taken to the hospital. Is-- Can I?”

“Say no more, mate. Family comes first. Let me know if you need tomorrow too, yeah?”

“Thanks, Mr.-- Ah, sorry, David. I appreciate you.”

David had originally wanted to confront the boy. 

After hours of researching who the real Thomas McCormick was, He had chewed the end of a pencil to hell trying to figure out how this kid-- a perfect carbon copy of a dead teen-- was currently working in the computer lab in his section. 

Apparently, Allah had other plans. 

It was now three hours later, and after puzzling over newspaper articles and police reports, David thought he had earned himself a drink. 

“Ivanka, I have had quite the day! One of the new interns is doing my head in.” David slid into his normal booth, opening his menu and looking up to see…. Not Ivanka. 

“Sorry, Mate, Ivanka called in. I thought you’d heard…” Richard, a pudgy fifty-some year old waiter who’d been working this joint since the late 80s, frowned down at him. “Something about ‘her kid?”

“Oh, shit! I’ll have to text her later. Do you know what happened?” 

“Not much. Her nanny took ‘im to the hospital and she said she couldn’t come in.”

David leaned back in the booth, brows furrowed. Crazy coincidence. David shook his head slowly, looking back up at Richard. “I’ll start with the strongest shot of whiskey you have, mate.”

Well, the magic certainly wasn’t new, as they had previously thought. No, the magic had always been there. Like a subtle buzz of a fluorescent light, it had flown under the radar until it either got louder or stopped altogether.

And this incessant buzzing had gotten louder. 

What Aurelias had been picking up on was overexertion. Exhaustion from an elongated game of hide and seek. From what Viktor could tell with the strong smell of bergamot and the soft smell of fresh rain was that the witch he was looking for was wearing a protection spell, masking themself and hiding among the pale-blooded humans. But a scent was not enough, and this temporary exhaustion would pass when their little lion had the chance to cover themself once more. 

That meant Viktor had to act quickly. He had to play chess with a ghost, one who knew he lurked in the shadows. For such a clever little witch, he would need a clever spell and a very clever plan. 

The circle was set against the hardwood floors of the chapel-- a repurposed building in the college campus-turned-coven. Dark lambs' blood made up the circle, with two eye-shaped rings that made a smaller circle in the middle where they overlapped. In the center, a dark splotch of black paint represented the pupil of Aurelias’ eye. Where the two eyes’ corners touched the circle, a candle burned, the only light by which the disciples worked as they laid sand outside the entirety of the circle. Viktor knelt in the center of the circle, taking the knife in his hand and cutting into his palm. As the blood dripped onto the pupil, gestured for one of his attendants to bring in the last piece of the ritual; A pet of the Fae. 

Aurelias had a few pets, but Noah was favored among them. Sweet, soft-spoken and ruthlessly clever, the boy had been a very good find. He had traded his freedom in for a friend, one who had been the original target of Aurelias’ collection. He was the perfect vessel between worlds, and his skin and blood sang with earth magic so powerful it was truly as though he was meant to be a faepet. 

The ginger-headed boy was led into the center of the circle, where he was guided to kneel facing Viktor. He was blindfolded, using his hands to find Viktor’s. With one hand he touched the floorboards where the pupil was etched, and with the other he gently grazed over Viktor’s bloody palm, his fingers tingling. He gasped as his vision came into view, guided by fae magic and letting himself be possessed by Aurelias. 

A woman, Viktor. His fae whispered, the deep voice unnatural through a boy of barely twenty. You’ll find her in a pub. Milton’s. Middle-aged, dark hair and gray eyes. Noah will know the way.

AIDEN PEARCE | WATCH DOGS; this man embodies older brother rage and it resonates so hard. like. the protectiveness over his remaining family. the fact he acknowledges (even if a bit harshly at times) that he is a bad guy. the fact he thinks he is utterly irredeemable… obsessed with him and his funky sense of fashion

APOLLYON | FOR HONOR; bastard woman. but i love her for it. her backstory doesn't get a lot of mention and i constantly think about how being a child when her family and such was slaughtered, and to have seen how the man who swore to protect them simply turned his back… i just. the way she's grown into someone who is willing to maintain the presence and intensity of war just to showcase its brutality. the way she took said man's armor and forged it to be her own. her brain!!! she is evil and i support women's wrongs o7

ARCADE GANNON | FALLOUT; the original "just like me fr" character, and one of the first canonically queer characters i had exposure to. my favorite companion always. his personality? incredible. his backstory? tragic. his humor? dry and awful, but i still love it and love him

DR. VIKTOR VEKTOR | CYBERPUNK; literally the character with the most transmasc swag i think i have ever witnessed in a game. like. genuinely. this man is trans to me and i am just so head over heels for this old man and his humor and his genuine care for those within his circle

ELSA WOLCOTT | WILSON'S HEART VR; underrated game and underrated character. genuinely. she is such a good character. i love the whole "parent who will do anything and everything for their child" trope (see: my inclusion of sam fisher and, by extension, aiden pearce). but like genuinely, elsa is such a tragic character when you look past the humor of the plot (re: the game being a mish-mash of horror tropes). i wish she coulda had a redemption arc q0q

MAJOR JACK KRAUSER | RESIDENT EVIL; bastard man. but i love him for it. the dynamic he has with leon (aka his obsession over his former ally) is so… man!!!! he also has transmasc energy and i really don't know how to explain it. he just. does

OBI-WAN KENOBI | STAR WARS; my first fictional crush fr, but also he is just. the character ever. the things he's been through, the way he uses them to better himself. the way he tries so hard to be a good man for everyone around him… obsessed

PUNISHED "VENOM" SNAKE | METAL GEAR; i am so normal about this man (lie) and the fact that he is a shell of his former self that has been molded to fit another's perfect image in an attempt to achieve a greater cause (one that would inevitably become corrupted and lead to his own death) and i just. mm. obsessed again

SAM BECKER | FAR CRY; underrated fave. i love sam's bombastic personality and how it stems from the fact that, after facing tragedy and having to adapt a role that makes him complicit in shit, he finally feels hope at things getting better (at least that's how i see it). he is my tragic little meow meow and i am still so sad about his death. i literally know it happens and every time i play the game i start getting so :((((

SAM FISHER | SPLINTER CELL; i discovered him while playing ghost recon and then he single-handedly shot me into the splinter cell series and now i am rotating him in my brain always. his character arc is one of my favorites, and a scene that always plays in my head is the one in conviction when he finds out the truth about his daughter's disappearance like. ugh!! plus i just love very involved and protective father figure characters (if you haven't noticed the trend on this list. and if you did? shush <;3)

Hey, I don't know if you ever heard of it, but Viktor really reminds me of Aiden Pearce from Watch Dogs. He's also a vigilante and cares about his family above anything else and will do anything to protect them. He's my favorite character of all time. And I just wanted to say that your story reminds me of him and that literally made me cry, since a new Watch Dogs game featuring him is improbable, and being able to see him in Viktor... Thank you so much for that, even if you did unintentionally.

I have heard of Watch Dogs even though I haven’t played it (even though I really wanted to, but I didn’t have enough time to do so back then 😭).

And I’ve also seen Aiden. I really love his character design (at least the physical and outfit design for him since I didn’t really know his personality) and his cool design was the big factor of me wanting to play it in the first place 😆

Although, knowing now that he’s also protective and prioritize his family like Viktor did… 🥺 He also sounds like my type 😆 Anyway, I’m glad that the inadvertent similarity can bring you some comfort 😊 And even though Viktor might already be dead in the story, I certainly am not done with writing him yet since I really had a blast writing all the flashback scenes with him in it! 😭

The language of ‘gender ideology’ originates in anti-feminist and anti-trans discourses among right-wing Christians, with the Catholic Church acting as a major nucleating agent (Careaga-Pérez, 2016; Kuhar & Paternotte, 2017). In the last decade the concept has been increasingly adopted by far-right organisations and politicians in numerous American, European and African states. They position gender egalitarianism, sexual liberation and LGBTQ+ rights as an attack on traditional values by ‘global elites’, as represented by multinational corporations and international bodies such as the United Nations (Korolczuk & Graff, 2018). In this context, ‘gender’ is made to stand in for identity politics and notions of social malleability: ‘Gender provides the theatre for the struggle for hegemony ... a contest for redefining liberal democracy where “gender ideology” embodies numerous deficits of the so-called progressive actors’ (Kováts, 2018, p. 535, emphasis in original).

Mallory Moore (2019) traces the first appearance of ‘gender ideology’ in a ‘gender critical’ context: a comment responding to a 2016 blog post on trans-exclusionary feminist website 4thWaveNow, which shared material from conservative advocacy group the American College of Pediatricians (not to be confused with professional body the American Academy of Pediatrics). From this time the concept saw increasing circulation in trans-exclusionary feminist discourse, especially following its use by ‘gender critical’ activist Stephanie Davies-Arai (who has been interviewed and profiled on 4thWaveNow), at a London conference attended by anti-trans campaigners (Singleton, 2016).

Yet, what is actually meant by ‘gender ideology’ (along with anti-feminist uses of terms such as ‘genderism’ and ‘gender theory’) has not been clearly defined: as Elżbieta Korolczuk and Agnieszka Graff (2018, p. 799) argue, ‘these terms have become empty signifiers, flexible synonyms for demoralization, abortion, non-normative sexuality, and sex confusion’. This makes them an effective tool in conjuring a moral panic around the breakdown of conventional notions of sex/gender, as evidenced for example in the increasing visibility of the trans liberation movement. Meg-John Barker (2017) observes a range of contradictions within the moral panic over trans existence within the UK media, with trans people blamed for both dismantling and reinforcing the current gender system, and trans women’s status as women questioned on the grounds of biology in some contexts, and socialisation in others. The proposed solution is frequently to set aside questions of ‘gender’ in law and policy, and instead define women and men in law on the basis of ‘birth sex’. In 2020 this became a legislative reality in several jurisdictions. In March the US state of Idaho banned trans people from changing their birth certificates, and in April the government of Hungarian dictator Viktor Orbán (an outspoken critic of ‘gender ideology’) moved to legally redefine sex on the very same day the far-right leader was granted the power to rule by decree.

Ultimately, the growing social acceptance of trans and non-binary people has challenged immutable, biologically derived conceptualisations of both ‘femaleness’ and ‘womanhood’. ‘Gender critical’ opposition to this can be understood as an emotionally loaded, reactionary response to reassert essentialism, resulting in interventions such as the ‘Declaration of Women’s Sex-Based Rights’ (see Hines, this collection) which effectively echo the demands of far-right, anti-feminist actors.

Not As It Seems - Chapter 1

Complete control of an all-consuming flame of power comes with a cost. Of course, most things do require payment, bargains, or deals. Even gods are indebted to the likes of man, their power demanding worship as a token, a deal. Dark magics were not an exception, but an example of the most powerful kind.

Viktor was well aware of this fact. Dark magics were forbidden, yes, because many fools got themselves torn up in the web of faekind, trying to control the creature instead of making mutual partnerships. But Viktor knew what it took to be powerful. To be worthy. To be significant. And he was. With years of experience, he had himself a coven of witches and mages that had sworn him loyalty for power. For significance. For a home. All the creatures who had been outcast by the ever-arrogant Covenant found themselves welcomed by one of the most feared and dangerous men in London. Hell, even most of England. He gave them access to Faekind willing to inhabit bodies and gift more powerful gifts than what came naturally, and in return they promised him loyalty. And to their new fae partners, food. Just like Viktor exampled.

You see, he had one of the most powerful kinds of magic because of how sweet his payment was to the fae in his shadow. For never ending youth, for fire magic so hot it made ashes of great buildings and difficult people, for the influence he had over his underlings, he paid in the blood of other creatures. He collected wayward, powerful things that did not quite know their place, and he lured them into his own traps, where they signed deals and made pacts that trapped them as pets to the fae. He had made himself an emperor to an empire of magic-selling and magic-goods, with a worthy harem to match the ferociously hungry beast that helped him forge his power. Greed is always one of the most deadly and unforgiving antagonists, yes, and it is what makes Viktor all the more dangerous. There is no length he will hesitate to go to hold the world in his hands.

Reader, it is important to understand all of this because it is where our story begins; A dark night full of rain in October, the sky lighting up occasionally with bursts of light from the storm bustling over London. Viktor was standing at his desk, looking over the latest shipping updates for some very potent potions he would be selling to one of the members of London's parliament in exchange for favor in the newest legislation concerning the Covenant and Witchcraft. He hadn't really noticed the persistent tingling in his fingers until the dull crackle gave way to pops and snaps, his dark eyes-- black from corruption thick and oily-- lifting slowly to a glass orb on his desk.

Something fun has come to us, Viktor, Whispered his fae, his shadow. A meal. A friend. A little lion.

"I do not understand. You have to be more clear, Aurelias."

Do you not feel it? The crackle of lightning? The bubble of energy?

"It is nothing but the storm. And London is huge, how would you be able to tell if it was a single mage?"

Because this is different. Aurelias insisted. The storm is an old friend of mine, and this is not her. This is someone new.

"Fine. I shall look into it, but don't get your hopes up. Maybe it is just a new power grid." But Viktor knew better. Something-- no, someone fun has come, indeed.

And he would find them.

Luke was sitting on the wall and twirling a stick between his fingers. Rosa was rubbing the side of her neck after she had finished a simple summary of everything that had happened for the last week. She left out private things, but by his pensive expression, he got the gist of it.

Rosa adjusted her jacket and waved her hand at him. “Well?”

He glanced up at her and shrugged his shoulders. “Well, you said this had been plenty of time in the making. I didn’t know you were spending time with him on the weekends,” Luke hummed as he tilted his head.

She breathed and rocked her head. “I don’t even know what I’m going to feel when we are home. I feel like I’ve stepped into a different world. The frequency changed. I took a deep breath and stopped running long enough to realize things that were blurred.”

“I can see that,” Luke nodded and tapped the twig on the wall he was sitting on.

Rosa glanced out at the lit garden and breathed. She scrubbed her face and shook her head. “I just, do you trust me?”

“Trust you with what?”

“Trust me to know this is what I want? You’ve always been so worried about me,” Rosa sighed and raced a hand through her hair.

Luke smiled and bounced his shoulders. “Apparently, I’ve overruled. Not that I don’t like him. You obviously do, and how could I be upset about that? It’s the first time I’ve ever seen you flustered over anyone,” he laughed.

A stone skidded by her on the cobblestone, nearly catching her leg and causing Luke to jump up in alert. Rosa turned to see Viktor and Ragnar walking toward them. She swallowed and paced backward to stand next to Luke.

“Are these the guys?” Luke whispered.

“Yes,” Rosa breathed as they closed the distance.

Ragnar was speaking in a teasing tone in his native language, and Viktor nodded. Luke smiled and held out his hand. “Hello, Luke Pearce.”

Viktor arched an eyebrow. “Another commoner?”

Luke’s smile grew. “Yes, I guess.” Viktor took his hand, and Luke shook it with a firm grip. “Which one of you is the brother, and which is the cousin?”

“Half-brother,” Viktor grumbled as he continued the shake.

Luke yanked him closer and sneered. “The next time you threaten Rosa, I will beat you to a pulp,” he finished with a glare.

Ragnar puffed his chest and shoved Luke backward. “You don’t threaten royalty, commoner.”

Rosa steadied Luke and glowered. “You both are nothing but bullies. Come on, Luke.”

Luke pointed two fingers at them and rocked his head. “Royalty or not, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.”

“Come on, Luke,” Rosa pressed and tugged at his arm.

He turned, and they began to walk toward the other side of the garden. Ragnar shouted something, but Rosa recognized the word. Ester, unfortunately, had to explain that one to her when she scowled Ragnar for saying that to her before.

Rosa turned around and glared. However, her retort was lost in her throat at the sharp sound of metal. The pair jumped into action and reached for their weapons, revealing Vyn walking out with a sword swirling in his hand.

He was unbuttoning his coat and speaking to them. “You will apologize, Ragnar,” he demanded.

“He can’t be serious,” Luke murmured.

Rosa glanced up at him to see it wasn’t sarcasm or even doubt that breached his expression but amusement. Vyn tossed his coat to the side, revealing the buttoned black shirt. She paced toward the trio with their weapons drawn, but Luke caught her arm.

Vyn glanced over and pointed. “Keep her at a distance. This is no fight for a lady.”

Luke rocked his head.

Ragnar patted his chest and gestured at Viktor while speaking in his native tongue. Viktor sheathed his sword and backed off with his hands up. Ragnar swayed his sword as he paced to the right a couple of steps.

“I only require an apology to my companion. Do we really have to take this to blood? I’d rather not ruin Uncle Edmar’s funeral by your father mourning you as well,” Vyn declared as his silvery sword danced in a deadly warning.

“You’re lying,” Ragnar laughed, but the tense grip he suddenly took of his weapon conveyed he wasn’t positive.

“When was the last time I lost a duel, cousin?” Vyn growled and changed his posture.

Rosa tried to pull away from Luke as Ragnar jolted toward Vyn. The flurry and crash of weapons caused her to withdraw from her struggle, and she stood in horrified shock. Her hand clamped over her mouth as the cousins traded blows.

It was a strange dance she had only seen in films. Ragnar was bulkier, but Vyn was swift. He moved with graceful precision. Luke pointed at Viktor and drew Rosa’s attention away from the duel.

“You stay there, or I’ll make you,” Luke warned.

Viktor narrowed his eyes in their direction and held his hands away from his secured weapon. The echo of metal in the air and words being flung in the native language. Rosa watched Viktor a moment more to be positive he wasn’t going to get involved.

There was a grunt and clatter of metal on stone, causing Rosa to snap her eyes back to the duel. Ragnar was on his knees with Vyn’s sword under his chin. Vyn’s cheek was bleeding, but he glared down at the man before him.

“Apologize, or I take my right for the offense myself,” Vyn ordered as he gestured with his free hand at Rosa.

Luke released her arm, and the woman nearly sprinted over to Vyn, caressing his arm. “Vyn,” she huffed.

“I said apologize,” Vyn commanded and dug the point deeper.

Ragnar’s eyes grew even with his jaw locked. They bounced to Rosa, and he winced as Vyn twisted the sword in the slightest. “I apologize,” he squeezed out and groaned. “For the offensive language.”

“No, apologize to her for calling her such an offensive thing. Don’t let it slip your mind. You must kiss her feet either,” Vyn voiced as his bare eyes read cold and deadly.

“I apologize for calling you such an improper name, My Lady,” Ragnar huffed.

Vyn removed his blade and carefully wiped the crimson beads off of it and onto his shirt sleeve. He then gestured with his sword to Rosa’s shoes. Ragnar groaned with a glower up at Vyn.

“I still have the right to my pound of flesh if you don’t,” Vyn reminded him.

The bulky offender bent, and Rosa grimaced as his face neared her feet, and he pulled away as an electric shock touched him. Ragnar was soon on his feet and stomped over to his fallen blade before meeting up with Viktor.

Viktor glared at Vyn before yanking his cousin’s arm over his shoulder and assisting the limping loser toward the building. Vyn tutted and returned his blade into the sheath before bending to collect his glasses.

“They’ll think twice before crossing blades with me again,” Vyn declared as he stared down at the cracked glass. “What a shame.”

“Vyn, you’re bleeding,” Rosa murmured.

He touched his cheek and glanced down at the darkened spots on his fingertips. “Well, he did manage to wound me twice. I am horribly out of practice,” he mused before taking his fingers to his dirtied sleeve.

Rosa stood in front of him to see his shirt had been slit at the shoulder, revealing a weeping laceration. She gasped and moved the fabric enough to examine it. “We need to get this cleaned and tended to. What were you thinking?” She puffed with a furrowed brow.

When he was silent at her question, she stared up at him to see his slight smile. “Neither are deep or worrisome, Rosa,” he voiced and touched her cheek.

“That was quite a show, Vyn,” Luke skipped up next to them with a smile. “I didn’t know you dueled.”

“I’ve been lazy in my practicing, and this is a fairly new weapon to adjust to, but I adapted. There are a few modifications I will have to make to prevent the errors next time,” Vyn voiced as he tilted his head.

Rosa groaned and stepped from him. “You’re bleeding and casually conversing about your prowess with dueling? Can we please get you inside so the wound on your shoulder can be tended to?”

“You’re going to upset her,” Luke chuckled. “Rosa doesn’t like open wounds. She used to drag me by my ears for skinned knees.”

Vyn exhaled and rocked his head as the curl on his lips remained. “Alright, but the likelihood of it needing care is quite low.”

Rosa shook her head, and they began to pace back toward the manor with Vyn pocketing his broken glasses. Luke scratched his chin and gestured to Vyn. “You learned to fence when you were younger? How about hand-to-hand combat?”

Rosa glanced between the two of them. Did Vyn just gain a new ally? Luke was always impressed by physical skill, but it was quite the turnaround from earlier.

“Yes, however, I much prefer strategy over brute strength,” Vyn responded.

Luke agreed and adjusted his coat while holding onto Vyn’s on his arm. “Yes, I agree. Do you use firearms?”

Vyn shook his head. “No, I’m not fond of guns though I can use them. A longbow is far more useful in a hunt, and it has less imprint.”

“Bowhunting? Oh, that’s interesting. I read an article on its return in the states,” Luke replied with a grin.

Rosa exhaled and shook her head. “Luke, this is really all it took to impress you? A sword fight?”

Luke laughed as they reached the staircase and nodded. “Rosa, that was something you can’t teach in a year or two. That was at least a decade in skill exhibited with an opponent who could have easily taken Vyn had it not been for his quick counters.”

“Thank you, Luke,” Vyn nodded.

Rosa puffed and squeezed Vyn’s arm. “No more dueling for my honor, Vyn. That was reckless.”

“Okay,” Vyn agreed.

They reached the visitor’s wing, and Luke tilted his head and scratched his neck. “Alright, well, I’m going to go to sleep early, alright? I’ll see you both after everything is done tomorrow?”

Rosa released Vyn’s arm as he nodded. “Yes, we’ll be leaving immediately after. All of my cousins' and aunt’s things have been sent down to the estate already. The drive is a bit long, but you can join us. We’ll spend a day with them getting things situated and then fly out on Friday evening.”

Luke winked with his thumb up. “Sounds like a plan. I’ll see you both tomorrow for the ride. I’m going to go see about the rest of the town and collect a few souvenirs.”

Rosa laughed and shook her head while embracing him. “Just be careful. I don’t want to lose you in Svart.”

“You won’t,” Luke chuckled and ruffled her hair. “Take care of her, alright? Obviously, you can.”

“I will,” Vyn hummed with a pleasant tone.

Rosa pulled from Luke, and he crossed the corridor to his door before turning and waving once more. When he disappeared inside, Rosa pivoted and noted Vyn pulled out a key and unlocked theirs. It wasn’t as fluid as his usual motions, likely from his lack of glasses, but he managed, and they went into the quarters.

She gestured to the bathroom while stripping off her coat. “Okay, let’s clean them up.”

Vyn didn’t speak. He walked into the bathroom, turning on the light. Rosa paced into the room and pulled out the first aid kit under the sink. She turned on the water, opened the box, and dug through it. Vyn didn’t move or sit on the covered toilet, he observed.

“You’re shaking, sit,” he finally said and touched the empty side of the counter. “I’ll allow you to do what you see fit if you don’t allow your legs to give out.”

Rosa breathed and noted her hands jerking. Great. Even when he was injured, she was going to need him to take care of her? The woman slid onto the counter and reached over for a washcloth. She wet it before wringing it out and turning to him.

Vyn didn’t need to be instructed. He bent enough for her to have access to his cheek, and Rosa cleaned the clotted blood from his face. He was accurate; it wasn’t a deep wound and wouldn’t need much cleaning. However, the laceration under his collarbone was a different story.

Rosa attempted to wipe it clean, but the shirt kept getting in her way. Vyn exhaled and pulled her arm gingerly from him before unbuttoning his shirt enough for her to have access. Rosa swallowed and focused on her task. Clean the injury. Bandage it. That’s it.

Vyn was close due to where she sat and the height difference. She had wiped it clean, and the cut was still bleeding. Not profusely, but it wasn’t a shallow wound either. How was he not wincing in pain or grimacing?

Even when she took some antiseptic to it, Vyn remained motionless. Rosa finished up her doctoring of the injury with a large bandage, and her fingers traced the tape to keep it secure. It wasn’t until she completed the duty that her eyes wandered up to his face.

Vyn was smiling. “Thank you.”

“Y-you’re welcome,” Rosa sputtered as her cheeks burned.

His eyes traced her face. “I was proud to defend your honor, Rosa. These injuries are just surface wounds.”

Rosa couldn’t catch her breath as it was shallow in her chest. “Just don’t scare me like that again,” she whispered.

“I promise, I won’t,” he agreed and traced her cheek with his fingers. “Would you like to have tea and relax for the evening?”

Her brain could flatline with how handsome this man was in such proximity. His shirt was still open enough to reveal beautiful porcelain flesh surrounded by blackened cloth. His aureate eyes were unprotected from naked view, and his lips were pleasantly tugged at the corners. Vyn Richter was beyond anything Rosa had ever envisioned in her life.

“Yes, tea,” she finally responded as her cheeks burned.

Vyn pulled from her with a nod. “Let me change out of this shirt, and we shall do so. Take your time. You still appear shaken.”

Though his last words definitely held care, his expression read mischievous in the faintest way as he left the bathroom. Rosa breathed and rubbed each side of her neck with her hands. Only a handful more days in Svart? This world was so different but so fitting… Vyn’s pieces fit together after their time here. So did hers.
