It all started with a mouse
Tumblr media
For the public domain, time stopped in 1998, when the Sonny Bono Copyright Act froze copyright expirations for 20 years. In 2019, time started again, with a massive crop of works from 1923 returning to the public domain, free for all to use and adapt:
https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2019/
No one is better at conveying the power of the public domain than Jennifer Jenkins and James Boyle, who run the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain. For years leading up to 2019, the pair published an annual roundup of what we would have gotten from the public domain in a universe where the 1998 Act never passed. Since 2019, they've switched to celebrating what we're actually getting each year. Last year's was a banger:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/20/free-for-2023/#oy-canada
But while there's been moderate excitement at the publicdomainification of "Yes, We Have No Bananas," AA Milne's "Now We Are Six," and Sherlock Holmes, the main event that everyone's anticipated arrives on January 1, 2024, when Mickey Mouse enters the public domain.
The first appearance of Mickey Mouse was in 1928's Steamboat Willie. Disney was critical to the lobbying efforts that extended copyright in 1976 and again in 1998, so much so that the 1998 Act is sometimes called the Mickey Mouse Protection Act. Disney and its allies were so effective at securing these regulatory gifts that many people doubted that this day would ever come. Surely Disney would secure another retrospective copyright term extension before Jan 1, 2024. I had long arguments with comrades about this – people like Project Gutenberg founder Michael S Hart (RIP) were fatalistically certain the public domain would never come back.
But they were wrong. The public outrage over copyright term extensions came too late to stave off the slow-motion arson of the 1976 and 1998 Acts, but it was sufficient to keep a third extension away from the USA. Canada wasn't so lucky: Justin Trudeau let Trump bully him into taking 20 years' worth of works out of Canada's public domain in the revised NAFTA agreement, making swathes of works by living Canadian authors illegal at the stroke of a pen, in a gift to the distant descendants of long-dead foreign authors.
Now, with Mickey's liberation bare days away, there's a mounting sense of excitement and unease. Will Mickey actually be free? The answer is a resounding YES! (albeit with a few caveats). In a prelude to this year's public domain roundup, Jennifer Jenkins has published a full and delightful guide to The Mouse and IP from Jan 1 on:
https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/mickey/
Disney loves the public domain. Its best-loved works, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Sleeping Beauty, Pinnocchio to The Little Mermaid, are gorgeous, thoughtful, and lively reworkings of material from the public domain. Disney loves the public domain – we just wish it would share.
Disney loves copyright's other flexibilities, too, like fair use. Walt told the papers that he took his inspiration for Steamboat Willie from Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, making fair use of their performances to imbue Mickey with his mischief and derring do. Disney loves fair use – we just wish it would share.
Disney loves copyright's limitations. Steamboat Willie was inspired by Buster Keaton's silent film Steamboat Bill (titles aren't copyrightable). Disney loves copyright's limitations – we just wish it would share.
As Jenkins writes, Disney's relationship to copyright is wildly contradictory. It's the poster child for the public domain's power as a source of inspiration for worthy (and profitable) new works. It's also the chief villain in the impoverishment and near-extinction of the public domain. Truly, every pirate wants to be an admiral.
Disney's reliance on – and sabotage of – the public domain is ironic. Jenkins compares it to "an oil company relying on solar power to run its rigs." Come January 1, Disney will have to share.
Now, if you've heard anything about this, you've probably been told that Mickey isn't really entering the public domain. Between trademark claims and later copyrightable elements of Mickey's design, Mickey's status will be too complex to understand. That's totally wrong.
Tumblr media
Jenkins illustrates the relationship between these three elements in (what else) a Mickey-shaped Venn diagram. Topline: you can use all the elements of Mickey that are present in Steamboat Willie, along with some elements that were added later, provided that you make it clear that your work isn't affiliated with Disney.
Let's unpack that. The copyrightable status of a character used to be vague and complex, but several high-profile cases have brought clarity to the question. The big one is Les Klinger's case against the Arthur Conan Doyle estate over Sherlock Holmes. That case established that when a character appears in both public domain and copyrighted works, the character is in the public domain, and you are "free to copy story elements from the public domain works":
https://freesherlock.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/klinger-order-on-motion-for-summary-judgment-c.pdf
This case was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, who declined to hear it. It's settled law.
Tumblr media
So, which parts of Mickey aren't going into the public domain? Elements that came later: white gloves, color. But that doesn't mean you can't add different gloves, or different colorways. The idea of a eyes with pupils is not copyrightable – only the specific eyes that Disney added.
Other later elements that don't qualify for copyright: a squeaky mouse voice, being adorable, doing jaunty dances, etc. These are all generic characteristics of cartoon mice, and they're free for you to use. Jenkins is more cautious on whether you can give your Mickey red shorts. She judges that "a single, bright, primary color for an article of clothing does not meet the copyrightability threshold" but without settled law, you might wanna change the colors.
But what about trademark? For years, Disney has included a clip from Steamboat Willie at the start of each of its films. Many observers characterized this as a bid to create a de facto perpetual copyright, by making Steamboat Willie inescapably associated with products from Disney, weaving an impassable web of trademark tripwires around it.
But trademark doesn't prevent you from using Steamboat Willie. It only prevents you from misleading consumers "into thinking your work is produced or sponsored by Disney." Trademarks don't expire so long as they're in use, but uses that don't create confusion are fair game under trademark.
Copyrights and trademarks can overlap. Mickey Mouse is a copyrighted character, but he's also an indicator that a product or service is associated with Disney. While Mickey's copyright expires in a couple weeks, his trademark doesn't. What happens to an out-of-copyright work that is still a trademark?
Luckily for us, this is also a thoroughly settled case. As in, this question was resolved in a unanimous 2000 Supreme Court ruling, Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox. A live trademark does not extend an expired copyright. As the Supremes said:
[This would] create a species of mutant copyright law that limits the public’s federal right to copy and to use expired copyrights.
This elaborates on the Ninth Circuit's 1996 Maljack Prods v Goodtimes Home Video Corp:
[Trademark][ cannot be used to circumvent copyright law. If material covered by copyright law has passed into the public domain, it cannot then be protected by the Lanham Act without rendering the Copyright Act a nullity.
Despite what you might have heard, there is no ambiguity here. Copyrights can't be extended through trademark. Period. Unanimous Supreme Court Decision. Boom. End of story. Done.
But even so, there are trademark considerations in how you use Steamboat Willie after Jan 1, but these considerations are about protecting the public, not Disney shareholders. Your uses can't be misleading. People who buy or view your Steamboat Willie media or products have to be totally clear that your work comes from you, not Disney.
Tumblr media
Avoiding confusion will be very hard for some uses, like plush toys, or short idents at the beginning of feature films. For most uses, though, a prominent disclaimer will suffice. The copyright page for my 2003 debut novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom contains this disclaimer:
This novel is a work of fiction, set in an imagined future. All the characters and events portrayed in this book, including the imagined future of the Magic Kingdom, are either fictitious or are used fictitiously. The Walt Disney Company has not authorized or endorsed this novel.
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250196385/downandoutinthemagickingdom
Here's the Ninth Circuit again:
When a public domain work is copied, along with its title, there is little likelihood of confusion when even the most minimal steps are taken to distinguish the publisher of the original from that of the copy. The public is receiving just what it believes it is receiving—the work with which the title has become associated. The public is not only unharmed, it is unconfused.
Trademark has many exceptions. The First Amendment protects your right to use trademarks in expressive ways, for example, to recreate famous paintings with Barbie dolls:
https://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/summaries/mattel-walkingmountain-9thcir2003.pdf
And then there's "nominative use": it's not a trademark violation to use a trademark to accurately describe a trademarked thing. "We fix iPhones" is not a trademark violation. Neither is 'Works with HP printers.' This goes double for "expressive" uses of trademarks in new works of art:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_v._Grimaldi
What about "dilution"? Trademark protects a small number of superbrands from uses that "impair the distinctiveness or harm the reputation of the famous mark, even when there is no consumer confusion." Jenkins says that the Mickey silhouette and the current Mickey character designs might be entitled to protection from dilution, but Steamboat Willie doesn't make the cut.
Jenkins closes with a celebration of the public domain's ability to inspire new works, like Disney's Three Musketeers, Disney's Christmas Carol, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Disney's Around the World in 80 Days, Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Disney's Snow White, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Disney's Cinderella, Disney's Little Mermaid, Disney's Pinocchio, Disney's Huck Finn, Disney's Robin Hood, and Disney's Aladdin. These are some of the best-loved films of the past century, and made Disney a leading example of what talented, creative people can do with the public domain.
As of January 1, Disney will start to be an example of what talented, creative people give back to the public domain, joining Dickens, Dumas, Carroll, Verne, de Villeneuve, the Brothers Grimm, Twain, Hugo, Perrault and Collodi.
Public domain day is 17 days away. Creators of all kinds: start your engines!

Baby Show Villain Tournament: Round 2
Peep the Bracket!
Tumblr media
We made it through our first round, and honestly, it was a ton of fun you guys! A bunch of people, followers and non, made this first round kind of awesome!!!
Of course, we lost a few that are really sad to me. Esteban and Orsino my beloveds. The Shuffler, who I got pretty attached to, without seeing the show. Odlulu, who Tabs got attached to without seeing the show. Mayor Humdinger, who lost to Oscar the Grouch, despite him not being a villain. Regina, who had a super strong fight against Donita Donata, and the Bobos, who only received ONE VOTE against Robbie Rotten.
Fun fact, we started with 21 Dealer's Choice characters, and now we're down to 14! More than half remain! This means I got pretty good taste I think! Granted if you count Huxley and Robbie as not dealers choice it means 12/19. Still good odds!
I decided we're gonna keep doing 8 a day! I like the energy of it! I'll post the first ones soon after this! Keep sending in propaganda too, especially for this half! They need some!
Today's faceoffs:
Romeo (PJ Masks) vs. Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy (Wordgirl)
Peter and Ivan (Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000) vs. Dr. Doodlebug (The Rocketeer (2019))
Tobey McCallister III (Wordgirl) vs. Vor (Sofia the First)
Mortimer Mouse (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) vs. Cedric (Sofia the First)
Dr. Two Brains (Wordgirl) vs. Carla Delgado (Elena of Avalor)
Dashiell Scamp (Miles from Tomorrow) vs. Night Ninja (PJ Masks)
Mayor Stinkypants (The Backyardigans) vs. Princess Ivy (Sofia the First)
Junior (Curious George) vs. Janja (The Lion Guard)

Doraemon Movie Review: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration (2019)
What is Doraemon? The title character of the Doraemon manga and anime is a blue robotic cat from the 22nd Century who keeps an array of high-tech gadgets in a portable pocket dimension on his belly, and has traveled from the future to improve the fortunes of a hapless schoolboy named Nobita. Although relatively obscure in the English-speaking world, Doraemon is a Mickey-Mouse-level cultural icon in East Asia (and some other regions, too). The Doraemon franchise was a big part of my childhood, and there are still elements of it that I enjoy now.
Doraemon has released theatrical films almost annually since 1980, most of which involve Nobita and his friends (kind Shizuka, brash Gian, and crafty Suneo) getting swept into adventures thanks to Doraemon's gadgets. Despite being of potentially broad appeal to fans of science fiction and animated films, there are very few English reviews of the Doraemon movies, so I'm embarking on a project to write about all the films that have come out so far. Good luck to me…
Tumblr media
Movie premise: Doraemon helps Nobita create an alternate reality where rabbits live on the moon.
My spoiler-free take: Out of the non-remake movies to come out of the 2005 Doraemon anime reboot, this might be the one that comes closest to feeling like a “classic” Doraemon film so far, and I consider that a good thing.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT
Review: If one were to boil this movie down to its individual core elements, I think they’d find very little that hasn’t been done in previous Doraemon films. (Okay, having one of the movie-only characters pose as a transfer student and actually interact with Nobita’s classmates outside of the main cast is new.) However, that actually works to its benefit, in my opinion. After so many of the post-reboot Doraemon movies have felt experimental in one way or another (with varying degrees of success in my book), it was nice to see one that replicates the vibe of a classic Doraemon story without being a straight-up remake of an older film.
I also thought this movie does a good job of introducing potentially convoluted plot points without feeling bogged down, especially the main gadget that allows the story to happen: the Fringe Theory Club Member Badge, which can create alternate realities that are only perceptible to people wearing it. The effects of this gadget could have easily been overly confusing, but the film manages to establish how it works quite effectively.
I suppose there are a few things I could quibble about: maybe it strains credibility that the villain’s second-in-command would think that someone named Diabolo was working with good intentions all along, and maybe the final battle against the villain’s minions gets a bit too slapsticky to take seriously. Otherwise though, I’d say this is pretty solidly one of my favorite non-remake movies to come out of the Doraemon anime reboot.
Not to mention, Shizuka gets to save everyone here, nice! It’s been a while since the last time. I’ve lamented this before, but it seems that many recent Doraemon movies (discounting remakes) don’t know what to do with her. The fact that older entries in the series have a better track record of portraying Shizuka is honestly kind of sad, so anytime in the new movies that she gets to do something important instead of standing in the background or playing the damsel in distress can only be taken as a good sign.
Shizuka-saves-the-day count (cumulative): 8
Star rating: ★★★☆☆

D23 Haul
Eh. No Kingdom Hearts. No Big Hero 6, that would've made everything worth it but I feel like lately companies have been showing too much too early. Here's Incredibles 3...it's happening, dunno what it's going to be, when or anything else but it's coming! Frozen 3, concept art, 3 years from now...which is so far away that I wouldn't even plan on getting people's hopes up, look at Beyond the Spiderverse, where is that? I don't mind waiting for it but they set that original date too soon, it wasn't just the strike, it was that they weren't even ready for it to begin with, it was a pipe dream and only makes people more wary when something gets delayed. I thought we learned this from CP2077 but apparently nobody learns anything.
On a positive note, I'll allow the Lilo and Stitch one even though Detective Pikachu set the standard for those designs but it had a cool intro. Tron at least had a cool laser and Nine Inch Nails (though no actual music reveal) Zootopia and Moana did great. Snow White actually got a trailer. Toy Story told us what it was about (even though it sounds tacky and seems in part with the og TS2 concept)
The parks. Yeah, we're gonna have a Lion King Land and an Encanto Land and a Frozen Land and a Villain Land- "Well, when is that?" Uh, yeah, left on read, so we have pictures! "That's concept art. That's not going to be how it'll look." Come back to me when you have models or animatronics and did you really just tell us that LK Land was based on the 1994 movie and show us concept art for the 2019 one? AND it's just Splash Mountain but with Pride Rock? You've had since 1994 to think something up and that's it?
Look at all the hotel concept arts to what they ended up being. So you're telling me that you won't (not 'can't', 'won't') spring for a new dragon for Fantasmic (which is literally on the poster for it) but you'll make a whole side-park for villains and add a dragon. And the walking mat...yeah, that's cool technology but that's all you're showing. You didn't incorporate it into anything. "Yeah, we're going to use this in the future...for something!" It's all tentative.
Well, what about the games? They had a big presentation set out after announcing that they wanted to get back into games. The stream actually taking place within Fortnite. They had an Epic Mickey panel celebrating its remaster and original release. They have all these Marvel games in the works, Kingdom Hearts (of course) and rumors that the Disney Afternoon cast will join in Fortnite, a vague Epic Games collaboration announced earlier in the year. So what did we get? I'll start a bingo card...Oh...it started a half hour later than scheduled. Ok? Oh, it has the leaders with Dave Filoni, Pete Docter, Kevin Feige and Jennifer Lee and they each have something to announce. Ok, Disney Villains in Fortnite. More concept art. Ok? The Incredibles in Fortnite. Ok, a picture. IG-11 with Baby Yoda backpack and Moff Gideon coming next week. Ok, this is all Fortnite, maybe they'll get that out of the way first. A bunch of Marvel cast which was inevitable as they have most in there already, ok. Black. Huh? Black? Oh, it's over, they didn't say bye, they didn't say anything else, just DONE, mic drop. You needed a whole event and panel that was delayed...for some skins?
I thought they were holding back throughout the year to save stuff for the game event but no, they were actually just trying to scrape the barrel to make stuff for it, maybe that's why they delayed it, they realized that they didn't have anything and had to try to get everybody that got applause on stage. They didn't seem to know what they were doing, like these people were thrown in, quickly briefed to add a quick word before grab the wheel and show it. It reminded me of trying to stretch out my powerpoint in college to meet the 5 minute runtime.
Show me stuff, sure, there was no shortage overall but I feel like concept -> production -> marketing -> release should be how it goes but lately it's all been combined with production taking a backseat and release still on the GPS. Show me earlier stuff at an event like D23 but make it past the concept stage first, show me production!
They design it to generate hype so much before the fact that by the time it actually releases, you feel like you've seen everything and nothing is no longer a surprise. "Oh yeah, Incredibles 3 is coming out. I could've expected that but now it's real and I heard about it 20 years ago." It's not just Disney, it's every corporation, I see it with game shows. Oh...a title card...oh...CONCEPT ART. I love concept art but it's more something I like to see AFTER THE FACT as bonus of seeing 'we went from here to where we are now!' but I see the whole journey now, I don't need the after the fact, you're not investing in your future, you're investing in your now so that investors will see this, it's no secret, it's not about the mainstream fans anymore that actually do most of the promoting for you and give it the returns. It's a bunch of rich people buying into other rich people and the audience just happens to be outside fueling it.

Hello! I saw that you write Bill's preferences and I have an ideia. Please, write how would be the Bill's reaction having a very beautiful and attractive girlfriend (Dream, JUST A DREAM😂). Oh, if you have a similar request, you can combine with mine if you want, I don't mind 😊
Word count: 1045
Warnings/contents: Cursing, fluff, self conscious feelings
Notes: Ahhh this is so cute! I love it! It took me a million years to get to this, but I am back in the habit of writing for Bill again (and hopefully it stays that way) and this was a request I got a long time ago, so here we go! The point of view switches a couple of times, I apologize for that, I completely zoned out while I was writing and forgot which point of view I was doing and I’m too lazy to change the wording 🙃
So here’s my first mediocre post since I came back to life, I hope you enjoy it!
<>~<>~<>~<>~<>
Axel would have the tendency to get jealous when other guys stared for too long; his girlfriend was absolutely stunning, and everyone saw it. Whenever he started to get jealous he would wrap an arm around her waist or shoulder and pull her close to him. Or he’d press a kiss to her lips and then look at the person who was making him jealous. Typically he would just sulk for a few minutes until you shot the guy down, who was openly ignoring Axel’s presence all together, and then left, dragging Axel after you
Tumblr media
Bob would definitely have insecurities about dating his gorgeous girlfriend; this was all just a joke right? Some cruel prank from Bowers. A running joke that she would go to him and talk about everything Bob did that was stupid throughout the day. She didn't really love him. How could she? She looked like a model for Pete’s sake! A lot of reassuring would take place in this relationship in the beginning, because he’d remain shocked that such a gorgeous woman would want to be with him. Sexually. But soon enough his worries would slow down. Though he would still get hit with a lot of insecurities when another guy hit on her because he assumed she’d want to be with him instead. And then you would have to be reassuring him again. Rinse, repeat
Tumblr media
Henry was very aware how stunning his girlfriend was. Still confused as to why she was even with him, in fact. And it seemed most of the people in town wondered that same thing; he would get a lot of jealous looks from others as he and his gorgeous girlfriend went around the town, holding hands and laughing. Jealous looks from girls were also very common, normally because they seemed jealous of her beauty, though also because of how happy they seemed together when the girls boyfriend stared at you as you walked. Every now and then he would get self conscious of his own looks, but a little reassurance from her and he would be back on his feet; he needs constant reminders from you that you only want him and that those other guys don't compare, just to make him feel better. And you were more than willing to remind him how much you loved him-- and only him
Tumblr media
Mark was very easily jealous. Having guys constantly doing double-takes to stare at his girlfriend could often get him fired up, but thankfully for the other guys you always knew how to distract him again. He often walked around with her with a protective arm around her shoulder or a hand in her back pocket, just to show those guys who did a double-take that she was not available. He didn't get very self conscious, but when he did it was important to take a gentle approach to it and just sit on his lap and kiss him like it might be the last time you can ever do it again
Tumblr media
Merkel is aware, and would find it funny how many guys tried to hit on his girlfriend, because she was the most gorgeous woman in the world. He had caught a rare, beautiful on the inside, absolutely stunning on the outside, woman and other men saw it, too. Their flirting was always pointless, and Merkel trusted her with no worries. To say he wouldn't get a little jealous when he saw some guy hitting on his girlfriend would be a lie, but he would always just cross his arms and stare the guy down while she turned him down and they'd move on with their lives; at the end of the day he’s the one she’s stealing the blankets from and using as a human pillow
Tumblr media
Mickey could get very sulky because of how gorgeous his girlfriend was. Only because other guys were always hitting on her and he was worried she might find some muscular guy attractive and leave him for the other guy; though he knew that was absolutely insane, he loved you and he didn't want some other guy to get to love you the way he did. It would only take a few reassurances from her, a few kisses and snuggling with him and watching tv, or reminding him of all the reasons you loved him and he would calm down. He just loved you. So much
Tumblr media
Roman could, and would, get crazy jealous. But at the same time he was proud of her; she was fucking gorgeous and everyone knew it. Many girls at school were jealous of her, and along the streets the two often got ugly stares from people as they walked. But of course it was all pure jealousy from the guys who saw Roman’s hand in yours, and your hand around his waist that annoyed the petty teenage girls. Being the most attractive couple in town was taxing because of jealousy levels from others; of course people were always trying to steal you from Roman, and as much as he was jealous, he knew he could trust you. That wouldn't stop him from getting jealous, but it might stop an outrage
Tumblr media
The Kid didn't understand why he was so jealous at first when he saw some guy hitting on you in the street. He had never seen someone as gorgeous as you were, and he learned that it was apparent many other people in town hadn't either; often times people were jealous, and the kid wasn't really one for confrontation. If he was jealous he would mostly sulk and wait for you to come back to him. It would take a lot of reassuring from you that he was the only person you wanted, and that those other people were nowhere near stealing you from him. Cuddling with him when he was down about this was important, and telling him that you love him a lot. He was observant and saw that other guys were pretty jealous when they saw the two of you together, but there was nothing they could do about it now, and he soon got more comfortable. Dating such an attractive person was different than he'd imagined. Nobody in town could compare, and he was so, so lucky

Baby Show Villain Tournament Bracket and Round One!
Hey everyone! Thanks for submitting characters for my tournament! I really appreciate it! We received 43 unique nominations! I've been having a lot of fun sifting through them. There's some characters I've never heard of in here, and that's awesome!!!
One thing that's been a bit of a hassle for me, admittedly, is figuring out fringe cases. There was a lot of debate and discussion about shows like Wordgirl counting as baby shows, I found out Robot and Monster did air on Noggin, Rugrats DID air on Nick Junior, so I had to accept Angelica after deliberating. And apparently Rise of the TMNT ALSO aired on Nick Junior? Yeesh.
Anyway, I think my decision was that I will be accepting all nominations, even if they broke the rules a little bit. There were four characters who were probably going to be cut, one for not being baby show, and three for not being villains, and those are
Hacker (Cyberchase) (most people i deliberated with agreed Cyberchase was for older children)
Oscar the Grouch (Sesame Street) (He's just a grouch)
Bal Boa (Jojo's Circus) (He's just a kid)
Spookie Ookie (Rolie Polie Olie) (He's just a guy who got locked out of his house)
Four however, is also the number of characters who received multiple (two) nominations. I decided not to make this easy for the ones getting the pass, so the barely making the cut characters will go up against the front runners! And who are our front runners?!
Dr. Two Brains (Wordgirl)
Mayor Humdinger (Paw Patrol)
Romeo (PJ Masks)
Swiper the Fox (Dora the Explorer)
I've also included 21 "dealers choice" characters, to fill the bracket up to an even 64. These characters got zero nominations, but were either characters I liked, characters people said they were going to nominate and didn't, or characters i thought were iconic and deserved to be in the poll. each of these dealer's choice characters will be going up against a character who received a nomination. While that's a little uneven, i also decided to put a few more fringe characters with one nomination up against another. I think that's everything for how i made the bracket. now for the bracket itself...
Tumblr media
For the first round, I'm gonna post 8 polls every day! The polls will be coming out later, and I will be tagging the character and source material for each poll.
Today's polls are:
Romeo (PJ Masks) vs. Bal Boa (Jojo's Circus)
Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy (Wordgirl) vs. Esteban Flores (Elena of Avalor)
Peter and Ivan (Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000) vs. The Great Orsino (The Rocketeer (2019))
Dr. Doodlebug (The Rocketeer (2019)) vs. Manish (Mira, Royal Detective)
The Big Bad Wolf (Wonder Pets) vs. Tobey McCallister III (Wordgirl)
Vor (Sofia the First) vs. Fufu (Pororo the Little Penguin)
Mortimer Mouse (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) vs. Hector McBadger (Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks)
The Shuffler (Super Why's Comic Book Adventures) vs. Cedric the Sorcerer (Sofia the First)

Halloween, Mickey style
For the lovely @grandpa-sweaters follower milestone🖤I truly cannot express how happy I am that you’re a part of this fandom and to be able to read the amazing content you put out!! This is my first long spooky piece, and I had a lot of fun with this writing challenge and getting into the Halloween spirit. I hope you can all enjoy some spooky!Mickey👻
Tumblr media
WARNINGS: 18+, slight smut and some spooky goings-on!
They had been in the car for at least four hours, she surmised. Not that she was complaining, car journeys with Mickey were anything but tedious. His Halloween playlist was blasting in the car, with Mickey enthusiastically tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to the tune of ‘monster mash’, flashing his girl a large grin as he noticed her leg start to bounce to the rhythm of the chorus.
“I swear we passed that tree an hour ago.” Mickey’s playful expression dulled as he pushed his foot on the brakes, leaning over to the backseat to grab the pile of maps his father had bestowed them with when he heard news of their secluded weekend away.
“Do you know which one we need?” She peered over to look at the crinkled maps, feeling a pang in her stomach when she realised she had no idea where they were. Before waiting for Mickey to answer she grabbed her phone, letting out a quiet groan when she saw she had no cell reception.
“Uh...” Mickey’s brows furrowed as he turned one of the maps round in circles, bringing one of his forefingers up to his lips as he chewed on his fingernail anxiously.
“There’s no reception on either of our phones. How much gas do you have left?”
“An hour, give or take.”
Mickey’s answer filled her with a dread she hadn’t felt in a long time. They were lost, with not enough to gas to return home, or to locate a gas station. She closed her eyed for a few seconds, trying to scramble up some kind of plan in her mind, which was proving quite difficult as ‘time warp’ was blasting out of the stereo.
“Look, babe, it’s fine. If anything this is what we wanted, just us in the middle of nowhere.” Mickey leaned his hand across to tousle her hair and she let out the breath she had been holding. Mickey was right. They were alone for miles, with no phones to distract them.
“That backseat is looking pretty cosy, huh?” Mickey’s hand was now making its way down her chest, toying with the buttons on her dress as she felt a warmth between her legs.
In an instant they were both in the backseat, fumbling with jackets and belts in the limited space. Her back was pressed against the uncomfortable seats as her legs were wrapped around Mickey, who was trying his best to look sexy while wriggling his jeans and boxer shorts down to his ankles while hovering above her. She managed to hitch her dress up to her waist and kick off her woollen tights, shivering slightly as she felt the chill of the late October air hit her.
“You’re so fucking sexy.” Mickey mumbled as he pressed his lips to her neck, his long fingers trailing up her thighs until they reached her panties. She instinctively arched her back as she felt him remove them, a move which he rewarded with pressing himself into her slowly.
Her nails dug into his t shirt as he began to rock his hips back and forth, hissing a string of curses into her ear as his hips rutted against hers. She could feel herself edging closer and closer to her release with each second, her walls starting to clench around Mickey’s cock when all of a sudden he leapt upwards, hitting his head off the roof of the car as his face went white.
“What the fuck.” His eyes were fixed out of the window, his nostrils flared as he went completely stiff.
“Mickey? What’s wrong?” She shuffled upwards and craned her head around as far as she could to look out of the window, seeing nothing but the setting sun and the dense field of crops behind their car.
“Someone was there.” Mickey’s voice trembled as he hoisted his jeans up, not taking his gaze off that same spot outside the car.
“Don’t mess around, it’s not funny.” Her lips pursed together as she pulled up her panties and tights, smoothing down the creases on her dress.
“I’m not, someone was there. Some old guy, staring right at me.”
“It was probably nothing, it’s just because it’s that time of year, I told you not to stay up last night watching those horror movies.” As she climbed back into the front of the car Mickey still stayed knelt in the backseat, rooted to the spot as his eyes darted around the vast expanse surrounding them.
“Come on, Mick. If we drive along the road we might find a motel or something.” She rubbed his arm gently, slowly coaxing him into the drivers seat and turning the car engine back on.
As Mickey pressed the gas pedal, instead of going forwards, the car began to rock, making a screeching noise before going silent.
“No, please no.” Mickey’s finger’s shook against the wheel as his breathing began to quicken.
“Mickey, baby calm down. It’s alright.” She was about to lean over to kiss his cheek when she felt her blood turn cold. A glance in the rear-view mirror had confirmed Mickey’s earlier sighting. There was a man stood behind their car, face contorted with anger as he stared right back at her.
“Start the car. Try it again.” She yelled, hitting the lock as she watched the man approach her window. His fist hammered on the glass as she attempted to ignore it, her heart thudding against her chest as time after time, the car refused to move.
“You filthy delinquents. This is private land.” Both her and Mickey froze when the man finally spoke, his irate words somehow calming them both. He was just the land owner, probably a disgruntled farmer.
Mickey rolled the window an inch, gulping as he took in a deep breath.
“Sorry, mister. We’re lost and our car is stuck in something, we just need a mechanic and then we’ll be out of your hair.” Mickey’s words came tumbling out of his mouth, and the expression of the man outside the car seemed to soften slightly.
“No mechanic will come out at this hour, we’re in for a heck of a storm tonight.” They watched as he pointed toward the darkening clouds, chuckling as the first few droplets of rain started to land on the bonnet of their car, as if summoned by the imposing man who had caught them.
“I own the old farmhouse down the way. You two must’ve passed it on your way here. You better come with me if you want to survive.” Once again he chuckled, this time with slightly more rigour, gesturing for the two of them to exit their car and follow him as though this were a completely normal situation they had found themselves in on Halloween night.
When they reached the farmhouse she felt Mickey tugging on her arm, staring up nervously at the rickety, aged structure that was looming above them. Darkened, wilted vines had long since begun to scale each wall of the house, entwining themselves around every window so that was no view into the house, or out. However, what surrounded them was arguably worse. There was a vast swamp surrounding the house, filled with stagnant, oozing water that made Mickey’s girl pull the neckline of her dress over her nose.
“We can’t stay here, there’s probably gators in there” Mickey hissed in her ear, pulling her away from the edge of the swamp and toward the farmhouse.
“It’s fine, it’s just one night.” She whispered once she had regained her composure, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze and following the farm owner up the creaky, cobweb-bound stairs to the entrance of his home.
As he was turning his key in the lock, both he and Mickey’s girl instinctively turned on their heels as they heard a blood-curdling scream behind them, revealing a wiry old cat curling itself around Mickey’s legs.
“N’aw, that’s just ol’ Mr, Whiskers, he ain’t gonna do you no harm, boy.” The farmer let out a brisk tsking sound and scooped up the cat, shoving his shoulder against the door to open it and then gently placing the cat inside.
“Fucking cat.”
Mickey’s girl shot him a warning look as he brushed his hands down his jeans, wafting away clumps of hair Mr. Whiskers had left behind from his greeting.
“Now you two can take the guest room, straight up the stairs and onto your first right.” He held out the key to his guests, but quickly retracted it when Mickey landed his fingers on the rusted metal.
“I got rules in this house, and I don’t want you two thinkin’ you can do all your hanky panky in my sheets. Understood?”
Mickey gave him a curt nod and a wide, sarcastic smile, taking the key and his girlfriend’s hand as he led her to their room for the night. When she had put her bags down and perched on the edge of the bed, Mickey grabbed the chair that was in the corner of the room and propped it up against the old, rotting door.
“Mickey.”
“What? We don’t know this guy, I’m not taking any chances.” He held up his hands and kicked off his boots before jumping onto the bed, causing a loud, unnerving creaking sound to fill the room.
“You know, this never would’ve happened if you hadn’t insisted we use your dad’s maps.” She cocked her eyebrow, lying herself down next to Mickey with her head rested on his chest.
“Hey, we used to use those all the time when I was a kid, they only seemed to fail when you were here.” Mickey playfully poked her in the side, using his other arm to wrestle her beneath him as his lips moulded themselves against hers.
“Mmmm...”
“Mickey, I don’t think we should.” She tried her best to reprimand him, sucking in a deep breath as Mickey’s hands started to wander up her dress.
“Oh come on, he’s not gonna know.”
“It just doesn’t feel right, not here.”
Mickey nodded and placed a kiss on her nose before laying back down next to her, curling his arm over her shoulders as the rain outside started to lash against the wooden frame of the house from outside.
She could feel herself about to surrender to sleep when Mickey started to wriggle around on the bed next to her, tapping his fingers against the bedsheets and humming as he usually did when he needed to distract himself from something.
“What is it?” She leant up on her elbow and peered at Mickey through the darkness in the room, who was chewing in his bottom lip and fidgeting round even more frequently.
“I really gotta pee.”
“So go to the bathroom?”
“In this place? Are you kidding me? What I sit on the toilet and something either bites me on the ass or sucks me into the sewer?”
She couldn’t help but giggle, shaking her head after a few moments and letting out a sigh.
“So you’re just going to hold it until morning?”
“My Uncle Finch knew this guy who could re-absorb his pee into his body, maybe I could try that.” Mickey closed his eyes and held his breath, starting to count to what she could only assume was infinity as she felt herself begin to drop off into sleep once again.
Mickey had seemed to join her, as they both sat upright in a start as a bolt of lightening caused the whole house to shudder, and the chair that had jammed the door shut fell to the floor, but they were both frozen to the spot, neither one of them daring to move a muscle to prop it back up into place.
“Let’s go back to the car.” Mickey’s tone was desperate but she shook her head.
“We can’t, that swamp will have flooded by now and like you said, there’s probably gators surrounding every inch of the house.”
Mickey groaned and threw his head against the hard pillows of their bed, staring up at the damp spores of the ceiling as he willed the night to be over as quickly as possible. He bolted upright once more when he felt something fluffy glide across his feet, throwing himself onto the other side of the bed with a screech as a pair of iridescent eyes fixed on him.
“Mickey, it’s just the cat. I think he likes you.” His girl tried to suppress a giggle as the cat pounced onto Mickey’s legs and with a throaty purr, settled onto his lap.
“How did it get in here? The door is closed.”
“It doesn’t matter, try to get some rest.”
Reluctantly, Mickey petted the cat’s head who, satisfied, closed its eyes and fell into a slumber.
She didn’t remember falling back asleep, but when she woke there were voices outside their door, and the first few rays of the autumnal morning sunshine had begun to force themselves through the tiny gaps in the vines acting as armour across the window.
“Mickey. Mickey wake up.” She hissed, gently shaking the sleeping figure next to her, noticing that their furry visitor from the night before had all but disappeared, despite the door still remaining firmly closed.
“Huh? What?” Mickey murmured as he finally started to stir, rubbing his hands over his eyes as the voices from down the hallway started getting louder, until the doorknob began to turn, revealing two men dressed in full protective work-gear, clearly bemused by the sight before them.
“How did you two get in? This place has been condemned for years, storm last night tore down the whole East side of the house. Hell, you’re lucky you’re both still here.” One of the men cautiously looked around their room before stepping foot in, ensuring both of them were careful to exit the rickety bedroom.
“What do you mean? We ran out of gas and some farmer guy who owned the place said we could stay the night.” Mickey began to explain, pulling on his jacket and lacing up his boots.
Both of the construction workers looked at each other, their faces paling slightly as they cast their gaze back to the couple.
“You saw old Farmer Jones?”
“If that’s his name then, yeah.”
“Guys been dead for over a decade.”
“What?” Mickey and his girl responded in unison, their voices laced with equal parts confusion and terror.
“As the old legend has it, he spends every Halloween night wandering around his land with his cat, inviting people into his house to shelter them from the storm that happens every year. Guess you two were lucky, now that’s a story to tell your friends back home.” The guy chuckled and led both Mickey and his girl out of the house, leaving them at the side of the swamp as he called a mechanic for their car troubles.
Mickey shoved his hands in his pockets and took a deep breath.
“I knew there was something fucked up about that cat.”
