SORRY got a little busy - let's get those HCs!

Look: Grog and Percy will likely to be the first members of Vox Machina to die, assuming they live out their natural lifespans give or take. I HC that, as they age, they grow closer. No one else in VM understands the encroaching end, how old wounds now ache. The children they (helped) raise are still so young, being quarter-elves and gnomes - it dawns on them how few memories their loved ones will have of them, in the grand scheme of their long lives ahead. Consider Grog feeling weak and Percy's mind growing dull, the traits they take pride in being worn away. Both would likely be pretty frustrated by this, while taking comfort in the fact they survived this long at all despite the lives they lead. Also giving their families heart attacks with their latest hairbrained, half-planned scheme. They're engaged in a PVP exercise ball reenactment of the skull thing. They're seeing how high Grog can throw a bomb Percy made with shaking hands. There's a canonball contest. "GRANDPA NO!" "Grandpa yes."

Vex is in an awkward spot: longer-lived than her husband and Grog (and even some of her children - Tieflings have human lifespans :,) ), yet far shorter lived than the remaining three. I'd think she might get closer to her elven family, in her twilight years. Understanding a bit better the loss they inevitably go through over the centuries. I can see her remaining a fairly public figure well into old age, keeping Whitestone on the right track in Percy and Cass' stead. Getting involved in the legacies of all her shorter-lived friends: Zahra and Kash's kids, the Brigade sans Tary and Gilmore's Glorious Goods. Keeping pleasantly busy - she'll rest when she's with her husband, gods damn it, and not a moment before. (Before she goes, she promises Keyleth she'll say hello).

... which leaves the gnomes and Keyleth. They'll likely live to see generations and generations of their families come and go. Probably some impossible-feeling changes to the world, too - remember that Chetney was born before Tal'Dorei and the Dwendalian Empire were founded, probably before Ank'Harel was raised either! I think they'd likely realize down the line that they've got an absolute wealth of historical knowledge, often first-hand, and strive to document and protect it. Of course Scanlan would compose so many songs, but I think he might actually grow into that role of a bard Ioun saw in him. The knowledge-sharer, history-speeker, not the guy singing brawdy songs and lying liberally in his youth. Pike might write religious texts and hymns of her own with the help of her ex-husband. I wonder if the Slayer's Cake might outlast the Take it was named for, under her watch. And Keyleth... well.

(Bonus: do any of them forget the faces? Minds are so fallible. Do they realize, and commission mind-reading magic paired with artists to get portraits of those they've lost? Do they trust their minds until the very last? Does Keyleth gasp, when she sees Vax'ildan again, and he is not as she thought he would be? Is he even still Vax'ildan, after over a thousand years without anyone who knew him passing through his care?)

Theres many reasons for that, one of them is that the Carmen they performed wasn’t the version they were most passionate about, and i think that affected it. Its is an incredible program- sooo underrated and truly groundbreaking and unfortunately the way ID is going, i dont think it will ever be appreciated- VM’s wider legacy but never will we see the difficulty, bravery, pushing of boundaries in the way VM did especially with carmen

MR is a more fully formed, fully realised piece of art- but they wouldn’t have had MR without Carmen..

I feel like for alumni it’s also going to be the IAMO kids who were legacy Ilderton like Lily and Nathan or the junior teams. In a perfect world, VM would skate. In a nice world, VM would emcee the day at Ilderton Arena. In a cold world, V would record a message. In this world, they will play Moulin Rouge for the nostalgia and call it a day.

Hi!! this got a little rambly and long lmao but here we go:

Satyr: how did you discover critical role

okay so!! This was apparently just before crit role started streaming, cause it was 8 years ago, and anyway, I went to a signing for Matt at a con. I'm incredibly shy, but he was just very nice and friendly. Some time later, I started seeing pretty VM art and heard people talking about this DND thing that Matt Mercer did with some other VA's and I was like, oh!! I've heard of him!

I tried getting right into C1 but I felt like it was maybe a little daunting to catch up at that point. But then not long after, C1 wrapped up, and they announced they were doing another campaign. So it seemed like the perfect opportunity to start watching, be there right for the beginning of the new game. And I still remember when C2 was first teased, they posted this art of the party--but just their sihlouettes.

And it was just so fun to see everyone guessing at what kind of class everyone was and who was playing what character, and there was!! this one very striking sihlouette in particular! This one with HORNS and pretty jewelry and!! tHIS ADORABLE LITTLE TAIL!! and anyway I saw that sihlouette and I was like!! That one! I want to see that one! And watched the first episode of C2 live absolutely vibrating with excitement and when Mollymauk first showed up I knew I was already so far gone, it was hopeless--

Elf: what is your favorite side campaign

I really liked EXU Calamity!! Even if it absolutely broke my heart, it was just so much fascinating world building and character arcs. And I'm just so weak for anything related to the Age of Arcanum.

Dwarf: what is your favorite one-shot

THE SONG OF THE LORELEI!! I love blood hunters and werewolves and the concept of all the PCs being family. The sibling rivalry and banter, the mysterious family history and the way each character chooses whether to carry on this legacy or find their own path--there's just a lot of little things I loved.

Genasi: who is your favorite campaign 3 character (so far)

Funnily enough, my favorite character is a genasi, and it's Ashton!! I love the whole concept of dunamancy as raw, primal power and chaos--as opposed to the very refined science of spellwork and theorems we see from Dynasty wizards. It's just such an interesting contrast and the unpredictability of it is so fun. Love watching Taliesin react to what he rolls for those chaos bursts.

Also adore Ash's whole personality and the little so far we've uncovered about their past. I love his little found family and the way they're so protective of people when they insist they don't have friends. Grappling with their fear of abandonment and attachment, gradually learning to up again and heal. Also, Taliesin playing another trans character just makes me so so happy. Soft barbarian my beloved,,

Paladin: what is your favorite friendship

aHH the circus kids!! I think it's such a tragedy that we never got to see more of them, and it makes all of their little moments all the more heartfelt and poignant. Yasha saying that she just got attached to Molly because "he was Molly," seeing him in all his color and vibrance and joy--"he was so beautiful." A spark of life when she had been traveling so long in the wastes, where everything was dead and nothing grew, where there was no color in the world. And then there's Molly, and he shines like a beacon.

Molly making sure Yasha has ways to find them when they leave town. Kissing her on the forehead when she comes back. The aftermath of the Zone of Truth spell, when Molly's just leaning into her for comfort and thanking her for being there for him. Molly opening up to Yasha about being genderfluid, about how he really feels and what his tattoos mean to him.

Molly waking from the resurrection feeling so lost and pained and Empty--running away and holding his head in his hands until Yasha goes to his side and comforts him, promises him he's not Empty anymore. The sheer adoration and warmth in his voice when he calls her Love, the moments when he gives her the biggest hug and hands her the flowers he picked just for her and Beau.

The fact that Molly spent so long at the circus waiting for the next time Yasha would show, trusting that she'd always come back when she's ready, that she'd never leave them for good. Yasha still faintly hoping and praying, mourning Molly for so long until finally, finally--he comes home. And this time, Yasha gets to be the one to welcome him back and bring some color and warmth to his life.

Bard: what is your favorite “how do you want to do this?”

The vision of Yasha ripping Obann's wings off while lit by the temple's shattered stained glass is just so very thematically satisfying and striking, I'll never get over it.

But Jester staring down at Lucien and telling Molly that she knows he's in there, that they all love him so much and they want him back--that always breaks me. The poetry of Jester being the one to strike down Lucien when she's the one who read his tarot cards and told him, "Facing you is death," but says it is a comfort. Death--not as cruelty or something monstrous, but as a new beginning, an end so something new can be born--death coming to you and sitting beside you, holding your hand and telling you it will be okay.

Two tieflings, two parts of a matching set, a deck drawn by them both--Jester and Molly, death and rebirth. I love them so much.

Fighter: what was your favorite funny moment

I absolutely adore the classics of 1) Vox Machina spends like four spell slots, 25 minutes, and takes 10 damage trying to open x1 door in Whitestone, and 2) THE HOSPITAL HEIST and especially eVERYTHING Molly did for it. The image of him crashing through a window full of glass and acting like he just did a ten point landing and then jumping into Fjord's arms while he's trying to convince some nearby guards that Molly ran off in the opposite direction--pure art.

Warlock: what is your favorite critical role merch 

MOLLY AND JESTER'S TAROT DECK!! I've been longing for that merch for years and it's everything I wanted. I love the little introduction written from Molly's point of view and all the lore tidbits we get about Moonweaver worship and Moonweaver oracle decks. I've also just always had a love of tarot cards, and this is actually my first oracle deck, so I was really excited!

The way these decks are often destroyed and rebuilt from scratch over and over, sometimes as often as the passing phases of the moon--how this reflects Molly's own soul and his fluidity in transformation and renewal between lives. The fact that Molly really does use his cards to try and help people, and that there's another group aligned with Ruidus who make red moon decks designed just to deceive and manipulate their marks.

Molly's cards and art being influenced by the ideals of Moonweaver worship and his heart for adventure and romance. The way he really did draw cards for all the Mighty Nein, making them a part of his life and the story his deck tells--I just love him and Jester and this lovely collaboration of art they did together. (Also, Jester's little notes in the margins of the pamphlet are so cute!)

I’m just thinking of how different the M9’s legacy is compared to VM’s. Sure, they will be known as this group who was able to bring peace to two warring nations, but do the public really know the hardships and sacrifices they went through? Will they know about Aeor and how close Exandria was brought to ruin? Most likely, no. Rather, their legacy lives on in the lives they personally touched and changed.

This makes me think of their legacy. Caleb is still trying to root out corruption of the Empire and Beau will be there to assist him, as well as fight any corruption the Cobalt Soul is aware about. Even if they’re in the shadows, they still are fighting to make the world better.

Then there are the tangibles. Caleb is a teacher who treats his students with love and a respect for the other. Veth has her summer camp that teaches kids the skills that she used to survive as well as the skills of her friend who helped save her in more ways than one. Fjord and Jester are sailors with a loose stowaway policy. They are unafraid to give aid to those who needs it across the high seas. Yasha is this strange, quiet gardener who allows any stranger who passes by her garden to take the flowers they need if it would make them happy.

By the time most of them are gone, the Mighty Nein is nothing more than an urban legend who might have changed history. But every now and then, when their story is brought up, someone will claim that they are real. A woman’s parents met in this little summer camp ran by this rather aggressive handling woman. A gentleman’s grandfather was saved from a life of piracy by the Captain Tusktooth and the Sapphire. A half elf still remembers being a student of Professor Widogast (her favorite teacher from the Academy) and him creating the time to assist her in her studies or to talk about any life problems. Every now and then, a floating high elf would also be there in his office. An old expositor recalls their days of training and how the Beauregard was so tough on them, but only because she saw the potential in them. It was funny to see her transform into a different person when her wife visited. A weary traveler talks about his visit to the Blooming Grove and how a Mr. Clay gave him the exact advice he needed to hear, as well as the best cup of tea he ever had.

While these stories are disparate, there is one commonality underneath all of them. The members of the Mighty Nein tried to make the world better than they left it. That is their legacy.

I like the fact that the whole critter fandom desided that Jester and the eldest De Rolo kid will flirt, because if they will ever meet the De Rolo kids, Laura will absolutely flirt with him. Maybe to make the table uncomfortable that Laura is basicaly flirting with her son, or to make Matt regret he put her kids in danger. I don't know. I just love the idea we all agree that Jester will flirt with the first born De Rolo.

Let me tell you about Percival Fredricksen Von Mussel Klossowski De Rolo IV (aka Freddie) as imagined by the Fjorester discord:

He has dark long-ish hair but is starting to grey on his temples despite the fact that he’s barely in his twenties (it’s a family thing)

He’s as pompous as Percy but with the added Vex’ahlia flirt which makes him an absolute menace with the ladies.

Gunslinger like his father, to Percival’s utter dismay.

He definitely travels with Zee and Kash’s kid and the aasimar twins.

A smooth cocky fucker.

He has a lot to prove, though. Like a lot. You do not grow up the child of Vox Machina, son the lord and lady of whitestone, a descendant of the god’s champions, heroes of Exandria... and then become a normal citizen. 

Nope. He is hungry to prove himself worthy of his heritage, which often times leads to him getting in dumb dangerous situations more often than he should. 

Basically, the personification of Blow Us All Away? 

“Gotta be my own manLike my father but bolderI shoulder his legacy with prideI used to hear him say that somedayI would-Blow us all away“

Vex sighs something about him being “just like Vax” but that makes no sense because his older brother is a library mouse like his father.

Uncle Vax sounds like a very cool dude, though.

Anyway that need to prove himself makes him and Fjord crash a lot.

Fjord who has nothing, not even a last name (and this fucker has like six of them!). Fjord who grew up poor and an orphan and who has nothing to prove to anyone but is hungry to grow and become someone, to have power over his destiny for the very first time... 

And then this guy shows up and has everything Fjord ever wanted. A name. A family. Money. A handsome face not tainted by monster blood (later, Freddy will tell him about his tiefling sister and Jester will be delighted to hear about it). 

Also, he’s a prankster at heart. He grew up hearing about uncle vax’s and grog’s prank war and was initiated in the trickster arts by aunt pike at a very young age (he is delighted to accept Jester’s invitation to Traveler Con to Fjord’s horror)

Meanwhile, though, Freddy is low-key jealous of Fjord’s freedom, of the clean slate he was handed to make of his life whatever he wanted. 

Cue: Wait for It.

Either way, though, he’s the quintessential romantic rival.

On top of everything, he has Charisma to rival Fjord’s which makes him feel even more threatened because if there’s anything he’s ever served himself with during his hard life it’s his silver tongue.

Anyway, I love Freddy, he’s a good dumbass kid who would probably flirt with Jester freely out of fun (and develop a little crush) but as soon as he realizes what’s going on between her and Fjord he organizes a full ball in Whitestone and invites them all over with the sole purpose of Parent Trapping them and that’s how all the VM kids conspire to make this two oblivious dumbasses admit their feelings.

When they leave, he has a Willoughby moment where he watches from afar from his fancy white horse and thinks that maybe Jester would’ve been something more for him in another life, where he could follow his heart instead of fighting to make a name of his own.

I’m sure the usual Scott fans will go. Kids who look up to him. and also the adult stans (ie stalkers). Why else would they mention Scott will be there, they need a draw to the shop so people will buy.

kids still look up to him? that’s concerning... its a good thing the mainstream media doesn’t “know” (or rather refuse to report probs out of respect for vm’s legacy cause lemme tell you this is NAGL historically speaking. what i mean by this is that i can’t wait for scott to admit what an embarassment his 32 yr old self was 20 years from now) what we know and suspect about scackie cause these kids are gonna stop looking up to him just like he stopped looking up to tiger woods.

As a Sochi survivor, watching all the young teams idolize VM and be excited to work with Coach Scott makes me feel alive. After the way VM were robbed in 2014, I couldn't believe ice dance would end this way, with DW the winners & VM forgotten. But VM returned & their legacy is now what it always should have been -- legends that all the kids idolize and want to learn from, and feel happy to be around. So happy the universe finally got something right!

1) This is hardly what a father who truly doesn’t want his daughter following his footsteps would do or say…

I’ve mentioned this before but for all his “I want another kind of life for you”, he truly does encourage her to pursue the P.I. life stye.

2) For once, I agree with you, Piz.

KEITH: It's just so refreshing to hear one of your gentleman callers have more to talk about than how high the waves are breaking.

PIZ: Uh-oh.

VERONICA: What?

PIZ: Dad likes you? Kiss of death?

3) It is kind of sad to rewatch this episode now that Nelsan Ellis is dead. He truly was a gifted actor, and his performance as Lafayette in True Blood was outstanding – one of the few redeeming aspects of a rather trashy show.

4) She looks so confident while taking her P.I. exam. As she should, this girl had been P.I.ing for a long time!

5) Now, this is the proper reaction your significant other, whom you’ve been dating for a very short time, should have when you are presented with promising career opportunities…

PIZ: So, I have news. I got offered an internship with, uh, Pitchfork Media. It's pretty much the most highly regarded music-review publication on the internet.

VERONICA: Piz, that's fantastic!

PIZ: Yeah, I'd work with the most important critics in the business, see bands when they're on the verge of breaking, might even get to do a few reviews myself, so I can really get my snob on. Their offices are in New York, which could be cool, right?

PIZ: Twelve weeks in the Big Apple.

Of course, Piz, being such a Nice Guy, is immediately disappointed at his girlfriend being supportive and happy for him. How dare she! What a crappy girlfriend! Disgusting! She should be crying and groveling, asking him not to leave her for 12 weeks to do something for his career because she shouldn’t be able to breathe without clinging to him!

Like, I get that you’d want your girlfriend to miss you, but I don’t get why you’d want that to be her first reaction when you are delivering supposedly good news, why aren’t you happy that she’s genuinely happy for you? Why would you want her to be immediately sad and heartbroken and clingy? That’s twisted and that’s not what healthy relationships are supposed to be like. I know I’d be running for the hills if after two weeks dating my boyfriend weren’t  happy if I got a great job opportunity and asked me to stay… for him?

VERONICA:  Ninety-five.

KEITH: You passed.

VERONICA:  Yeah, I passed. And I beat your score by two points. But don't worry, Dad. I'll still lob in the token call from time to time asking for advice, thereby validating your existence.

7) Wallace was right about Veronica being a marshmallow, though. I mean, when Wallace is the skeptic in a situation, it’s hard to argue she’s the resident marshmallow. Even though she is on occasion a cynic, most of the times she’s played or devecived were because of how much of a softie she is.

8) Won’t be the last time…

VERONICA: Tell your roommate I came by hoping to kill time between classes, getting to second base with someone, then left unsatisfied.

9) Are you really surprised, girl?

WALLACE: He's a good guy, Veronica. Try not to rip out his heart.

She’s like, “when have I ever ripped ayone’s heart out?”, and I’m like: “Every. Time.”

10) Meeting the parents, Logan? Isn’t it a bit too soon? And I’m 100% sure he was missing arguing with Keith right here… the Lees were overbearing, to say the least.

MR. LEE: My point is that white flour is essentially poison. You'll see. Couple weeks, you'll be home eating with us. You'll feel like a new person.

PARKER: I don't know. I rely pretty heavily on my morning bagel.

MR. LEE: Which is exactly why you need to be without it. Oh, and I was able to pull a few strings and get you that job in the mailroom I was telling you about.

MRS. LEE:  Parker! Elbows!

MR. LEE: It's only for a few weeks but it's enough for you to make some spending money before we leave for your Aunt Louise's.

PARKER: Thanks, Dad, but I was thinking of looking for a job, like, at a-a day-care or something.

MR. LEE: So you can spend the summer with a cold and ruin everyone's vacation? I don't think so. So, Logan. What sort of career are you pursuing?

11) Logan and Parker are in a very similar situation to Veronica and Piz, and from their reactions, I’d say Parker and Piz would be a much better fit. At least Parker is upfront about how she feels, even though I still feel she doesn’t have any right to be making any demands this early in the relationshp.

12) While I appreciate the show attempting to tackle such a sensitive social issue as child soldiers, I’m not a fan of the execution. I prefer learning my lessons via the story and the characters instead of this too on-the-nose lesson. It just, it puts me off. I felt adding the dad plot was a bit too much, although I get they needed some mystery to justify Veronica getting involved with Apollo in the first place. I just felt they could’ve focused on the idea that he was lying in his book instead of bringing a C plot into the B plot. I don’t know, the whole Apollo plot feels too Lifetime-y to me. Nothing against Lifetime movies, but it’s not what I’ve come to expect frmom the VM writers. And it’s certainly not the clichèd style one would expect when dealing with an issue such as child soldiers.

13) Oh, Parker... Tsk, tsk.

PARKER: You're sure this doesn't bother you to talk about?

VERONICA: Positive.

PARKER: Logan's going surfing in South America for the whole summer. Never mentioned it. The whole summer. What is that? Is that how he is, or is that just how he is with me?

VERONICA: It's kind of just... how he is.

I generally tend to defend Parker because I think she gets a lot of gratuitous hatred, but it’s kind of difficult to side with her here because she’s not going to Veronica as her friend – she’s going to Veronica as Logan’s ex-girlfriend. It’s easy to read the implicature in her question: is that how he is with me or was he the same way with you? I feel like it’s one thing to be the bigger person and accept that your ex is dating one of your friends and attend a birthday party to prove it, but when said friend comes to you for relationship advice… that’s pushing it. I don’t know, it just rubs me the wrong way, it feels like Parker was throwing salt in the wound and asking way too much from Veronica.And Veronica was really trying for a change. She was swallowing her pride and hurt feelings and trying to pretend she was 100% okay with this. And either way, this was a conversation Parker should be having with Logan, not with his ex! It seems she was trying to get some intel about him and she wasn’t really putting herself in Veronica’s shoes and how uncomfortable this conversation made her. Yes, Veronica does say she’s okay talking about this with Parker, but you can tell she’s not by the way she acts, answers, and hesitates. Veronica even suggests Parker should be having this conversation with someone else, which should’ve been obvious to Parker. Who goes for relationship advice to their significant other’s ex?

14) I’d get why this would be a problem if they were in their thirties…

MAC: When's the last time you went to class?

MAX: Uh, February.

MAC: Are you kidding?

MAX: Business has been booming. My classes have kind of fallen by the wayside.

MAC: So now begins the eleventh-hour cram session.

MAX: No, no, no, no, no, I'm done. The countdown to my expulsion has begun. Frankly, it's liberating.

But they’re not? They’re 18 or so? So what if he’s flunking and runs a kind of illegal business? Enjoy the sex and the pizza!

15) Ugh the look on his face just about breaks me…

LOGAN: How do you know about my trip?

VERONICA: Parker mentioned it.

LOGAN: Did my fan club meet today? Thought you guys only met on Wednesdays.

VERONICA: Look, she was bummed you didn't tell her about the trip.

LOGAN: And you took turns sticking pins in your Logan dolls?

VERONICA: No, I told her that's just how you are. 

That matter-of-fact line thrown by Veronica just about proves each and every one of Logan’s insecurities about their relationship. Veronica didn’t intend it in that way, though, but Logan can’t help but interpret it as her accepting he is and will forever be an unredeemable no-good loser.

16) Piz is so pathetic, though. Like, then we get that line in the movie about him consuming prescription cannabis because of his chronic depression and we’re to take it at face value, like “oh, that’s Dick being Dick, haha!” but the moment it sinks in it makes so much sense? And it kind of annoys me that Dick continues to be a butt-of-the-joke character when there’s enough backstory to write him as much more than a one-dimensional character.

-Youngest ever Olympic champions

-proved to the world what true ice dance should be

2014:

-Were dealt an extremely bad hand, even back in the 2013 season by their support system/coaching team (from what they have said and the results support that). Were not given the support they needed in the Olympic season. Likely would be competing in an event that was predetermined to deny them gold.

Despite this:

Performed spectacularly in all 4 skates, but especially the IE- which were damn near close to perfection- and was even more pointed out by the fact the judging was corrupt. Blind people could tell they were better than DW.

They ended up with two silvers, but more importantly they performed like the champions they are and didn’t let the shitty situation affect their performance. They proved how great they were with their performances-not the colour of their medals

2018:

Return to Olympic competition halfway through the quad. Are undefeated all but once against a team primed to beat them in 2018 no matter what.

They won in their 3rd Olympics - 3rd GM, 5th overall, 2nd individual title.

They were never ment to win those Olympics. They simply weren’t. Their talent was stratospheres above any team the sport has ever seen. But the way that result was supposed to play out was not in their favour. They were ment to be denied their crowning achievement. They were competing against entities with the power, money and influence, and two small town kids simply shouldn’t have possessed the ability to take them down.

But they did.

I am proud of all of their wins, and all of their losses. I am proud of them for their whole career. The ups and the downs. I respect all their views on their wins and losses. We hate to talk about Sochi for obvious reasons. They say it’s their favourite Olympic experience because of how close it brought them together- and the way they handled the shitty hand they were dealt.

But what I think is most spectacular about their unrivalled career achievements, is not what they won, but how they won. None so more evident than PYC. I don’t know how the way they achieved that gold medal can be underrated and ignored in the story of their legacy. The judging was stacked against them. All but pre determined. Another team had been placed in their way. Dating back to VM’s undefeated season, the French were ment to win the Olympics, regardless of the performances VM or PC gave. Despite this, VM STILL WON. They proved they were the best, and why they were the best.

That needs to be remembered. And for all the formality and complements VM themselves can/do/will give other teams, the fact is they know. They have admitted themselves they weren’t ment to win in 2018. So on this level- they know what they achieved. And the fact that going into those games they knew how unlikely it was they were actually going to win. They still went there with all the belief in the world they were going to do it.

They weren’t motivated by ‘the fear of losing’. They were motivated by ensuring they would have their moment, that they would perform the way they had trained for and dreamt of all their lives. They went there to skate for each other, to show their gratitude for the life they had given each other and shared together for over 20 years. They went there to show their love for each other and for their art.

And they made those motives the reason they won.

That kind of achievement will not be replicated.

Going into the ID event this year, I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling many different emotions. Sad that we won’t see them there, fear that their legacy will be forgotten, the inevitably, most likely one or more undeserving teams with soon be considered on the same level as them as far as Olympic medals are concerned, and if you look back pre VM, the teams that they share the title of Olympic Champions with and Olympic Medalists with is an embarrassment for the sport.

So with that, I will be trying will all my might to not get upset about VM relinquishing their ‘reigning Olympic champions’ title. I will try to remember that their legacy is so much more significant than their medals. It’s the impression they leave on all that watch them, and proving that along with the incredibly hard work and talent, pure friendship and love can lead you to greatness. To do what they did with that approach to their careers and their partnership is so rare, and so special, no future Olympic ID event and it’s medalists could possibly replicate it and live up to their legacy. For many others, winning is the motivating factor, and winning whether you are the most deserving or not doesn’t affect the quality and purity of your win. With everything else going on surrounding the olys, specifically the FS events this year. The ugliness and cruelty that can go into sport. What VM created in all their Olympic moments is something so special, and the way they did it, how they made people feel can not be replicated.

Above all, VM had their Olympic moment. And they had at least 3 of them, I would argue they had 7, because every one of their ID performances was a moment in history. A pinnacle moment in Ice Dance, in Sport and in Art. Of their free dances at the Olympics, they had 3 ‘Boleros’. I would argue that if performed on that big of a stage, ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’, ‘Carmen’ would be included in that company. The dark cloud hanging over Sochi prevented The Seasons from being seen as that. But it was. You go back and watch that performance and it brings tears to your eyes. No one will ever dance on ice like that again.

I don’t mean any offence to the athletes and teams this year striving to create their own moment. Each has their own motivation and whether it’s pure or not, that’s what drives them. That’s their prerogative. But for those of us who lived through PYC and VM’s career leading up to that, we know how special that was, and the effect they had on the wider Olympic audience is a power move few will ever have.

I hope this message gives everyone some comfort in what will inevitably be a difficult event to sit though for those profoundly affected by VM and their impression and legacy they left on the sport. Along with just being the wonderful people that they are. The sport no longer deserves them. The sport never did deserve them. The sport can have and create the story it wants to, and they can screw over whoever they want. This year’s event will be a return to the pre- VM reign. There just won’t be anyone as special as them ever again.

SW: MARTHA STEWART! When one of our biggest weddings got picked up for publication in Martha Stewart Weddings, it was our personal turning point.

VM: What has been the most rewarding event you have ever planned?

SW: Legacy weddings and events are the most rewarding. Having a family choose you over and over to take care of their biggest life moments is so humbling and amazing.

VM: What is a common challenge you face? How do you overcome it?

SW: We constantly face poor communication and low levels of professionalism in this industry because there are few standards that industry pros must meet. It’s easy to break into this business but harder to stay afloat in a professional manner.

VM: To future event planners like myself, what is the greatest piece of advice you would give?

Critical Role EP:7/13/17

So I don’t write here, I usually don’t have much to say and what I do have to say I don’t think people will be interested in.  Last night however on Critical Role I saw something that for whatever reason I feel I need to write down.  For those of you who watch Critical Role but are not caught up, warning there are spoilers ahead.  For those of you caught up, here is my take on last nights episode why it is important to understand our men and women in the military and what VM is really going through.

Vox Machina as we all know have gone through a lot since they first formed.  Here are (for the most part) a bunch of strangers who through trials and tribulations have become a cohesive unit.  Some of them knew each other before (i.e. Vex and Vax and Pike and Grog) but they were different parts that came together to become a whole.  This is exactly like every solider who enters the military.  When you start you don’t usually know anyone, but you fight and work together and become a family (which is one of the reason why the bond between vets is so high).  

VM has been at war for a while now.  There have been small battles, there have been large battles and they have gone through literal hell and back.  They have all grown in different ways.  Each of them has affected each other in different ways.  Some have fallen in love.  Some have had the bonds of friendship put to the test.  Each and every one of them has scars both physical and mental.  This is also exactly like soldiers who go off to war.  

I bring up the soldier comparison because I feel it is important to understand that last nights episode showed all of the various issues facing our soldiers.  Each of VM represented a different type of internal battle each soldier goes through at different times and for different reasons.  Let me elaborate and break down each character and what internal demon each of them represented (intentional on the part of the players or not).

Grog:  Grog is your typical infantry soldier.  He’s big and he loves to fight.  He feels most comfortable when he is on the battlefield.  What scares him though is that he will only ever be that.  He tries to improve himself (i.e. learning to read) but his fear is that he will never be able to be more than a brute.  Last night he came face to face with an eternity that scares him, because in that eternity (the realm of Ioun) he is useless.  (This is similar to what soldiers go through when they are discharged from the military and thrust back into the civilian world.  Many feel obsolete and useless in a world that doesn’t make sense to them and the skills they have learned in the military have no use in their new “eternity” aka the civilian world).

Scanlan:  There is a Scanlan in every unit.  He is the one who cracks jokes, who keeps the mood light and who is everyones “friend”.  Scanlan though is suffering from a severe case of PTSD from his adventures and during his time with VM his life changed.  Like many young soldiers he didn’t really much care what happened to him because he never really thought about his own mortality.  Then he instantly became a father and he had a family.  His views on everything changed and when once he was willing to do anything he now thought about what it would mean for his daughter if he died.   He couldn’t handle it and at one point and turned to drugs and then eventually he broke and left.  Scanlan was like any young soldier who starts the military and then eventually gets married and or has kids.  He wrestles with his duty for his friends and his duty to his kids.  He knows he could never forgive himself if something were to happen to one of his friends and he was not there, but at the same time he could never forgive himself if he were to leave his kids without a father.

Pike:  I can’t really comment on Pike because Ashley wasn’t there but Pike is your typical Combat Medic.  She knows that she can’t save everyone, but she is going to damn sure try even if it means she dies herself.  (I really hope Ashley is available to RP next game, I really want to see her RP Pike in all of this.).

Keylith:  Keylith is your typical legacy soldier.  She was raised and groomed to be a leader one day because that was her destiny (like any kid who grew up with parents who were officers in the Military and was expected to become one themselves).  She has never felt that her destiny was her own, but she found comfort in her friends.  She eventually fell in love and she thought that she had some control over her life for once.  Then Vax died and came back on borrowed time.  She shut down.  She knows that this mission will mean the end of her love, but she also knows that she has a duty to do and that she cannot shy away from what will happen.  Like a military leader who has to send a loved one into a suicide mission she is angry.  Angry that she was cheated out of a life with her love.  Angry that she doesn’t really have a say in it. Angry that she has to keep on moving forward even though she just wants to stop.  She is also angry because two of her closest friends have done something that in normal circumstances would make her happy, but all she can feel is anger and she is even angry at herself for feel that way.  This is just like every soldier and widow of a soldier who has had to endure the loss of a loved one while at the same time seeing others around happy.  They are angry at the world and angry at themselves for feeling that way.

Vax:  Vax is your typical “fate” soldier.  He knows he is going to die.  He has died and came back, but he knows that this is the end.  Once it is over it is over and he is gone.  There are some soldiers who have this feeling right before a deployment that this WILL be the time they die.  They have this unnerving calm about everything.  They are no longer scared because they know that this is the end, and there is nothing they can do to stop it.  They feel guilt because they know that it is going to cause pain for those left behind, but they also know that they cannot shy away from their task.  They jump into it and take risks they normally wouldn’t take because they know that fate has already decided.  

Percy:  Percy is your typical “Ops” soldier.  He wants to know everything about everything and he thinks that if he can know enough about a certain thing, then he can affect the outcome.  For him the real power comes in the form of knowledge.  He is a scientist at heart and has never had what you would call a “spiritual” moment.  Last night though Percy learned something that he never thought that he would ever learn.  It all means something.  His life, will mean something.  He loves Vex and he wants to spend his life with her, but he always knew that it was fleeting.  What he learned last night is that what he feared all along (being forgotten) is no longer a fear for he will be remembered.  This is soldiers who find a purpose when they are out of the military by trying to do or create something that will last.  Make sure they will be remembered.

Vex:  She is the typical soldier who takes care of everyone.  She is everyone’s mom, sister, friend, etc.  She tries to make sure that everyone around her is taken care of before she takes care of herself.  That is why what is going on right now is so hard on her.  She got married and she is happy, but she doesn’t feel like she can be happy when her brother is on borrowed time and his beloved is in pain.  So she keeps it under wraps and makes sure they are ok.  She feels guilty for coming back when her brother didn’t (not really) and she feels guilty that she is happy when they are not.  Like many soldiers she has survivors guilt and she doesn’t feel like she can show happiness when so many others around her are in pain.

Sprigg:  Sprigg is the old grizzled war vet who fought once and lost all of his friends.  He is the embodiment of the fear, sadness and mental anguish all vets suffer when they lose their friends.  They have survivors guilt, they blame themselves for not dying with everyone else and they usually turn to drugs and alcohol (or in Spriggs case a severe psychotic break which can also happen).  They also feel like they should be doing what they use to do and feel guilt for hiding away when a war is going on, but they don’t feel they can anymore and that eats at them too.  

Last night we saw in the different characters a glimpse of what life is life for our military.  If you have a chance, watch these characters in this episode with this in mind and then maybe reach out to a vet that you know or don’t know.  22 Vets commit suicide every day.  22.  Now you might understand why that number is so high.  While the characters in the show are not real, our men and women of the military are.
