My name is Lew Wentz.

I am a 69 year old gay criminal defense lawyer. I have been keeping journals for 47 years as of September 14, 2024.. I am writing a book based on the journals.

I came out as a gay man in 1984. I was married to a woman then. I left the marriage after telling her I was gay.

My younger sister, Zoe, who I was very close to, died rather suddenly of pancreatic cancer in May of 2023. She gave me permission to blog the last two weeks of her life. Those blogs run from May 1 to May 14, 2023.

I journaled my journey through the turbulent 1980's and 1990's. During that time, I was pretty vocal about being gay. I volunteered to help people with aids through their illness and death. And, I believe because of this, I was fired from my job as a deputy Public Defender in Modesto California. I also documented the 12 year relationship I had with my partner, Jim, who died in 2009.

I wrote pretty much daily about these events and many others. I never intended for the entries to be made public. But, I now think they should be, as they weave what I believe to be our common story of what it's been like to be out, human and gay in the past four decades.

And, as I journaled, I developed ideas and ways to journal and wrote about them in the journals. I discuss the impact journaling has had on me. And, the amazing revelation reviewing journal entries for the blog and book of just how incredible our lives have been. Memory fades. The journal details do not.

My hope is that , after reading the blogs, and maybe some day the book, you too will become addicted to journaling. Your life on paper will amaze you down the line.

At this point I don’t care about these sorts of reviews, I’ve read plenty of them now

What I do care about is that nearly the largest % of common negative reviews is this sort of review, rather than like, actually useful feedback or actual gameplay mechanic feedback

For me, negative reviews are a good chance to see if there’s been any glaring issues with the core game

Sure some boil down to “wasn’t for me” (and that’s okay ofc!!), but it’s usually the only place you get people telling you how X Y or Z is shit (in very blunt honest words), and can lead to improvements all round.

So when I do dredge up the courage and trawl through the reviews, it’s always a shame to see that there’s still a large amount of people complaining over a couple words

#18 Sarah Vaughan & Her Trio - At Mr. Kelly's (1958)

Genre(s): Jazz Vocals

Finally, a vocal jazz album with no fucking string section. As I've mentioned before, I've been a big jazz vocals guy, and the bigger the band the less I usually like it. But if I'm going to listen to vocals, this is my favorite kind of vocals album to spin: a small ensemble, live in a small club. Of all the live albums we've heard so far in this project, At Mr. Kelly's may be the live-est (if there is such a thing). Everything feels organic. You can hear the room. The band is great, playing loose and comfortably, but not sloppily. Sarah forgets the words to a tune and makes them up. There's some witty banter and laughter. It's one of those live albums that really gives you the live experience; you can imagine yourself sitting at a table at the show, sipping a drink (I'll take a neat scotch; a good one, but not too nice).

I don't know that Sarah Vaughan needs much of an introduction, but if you live under a rock: she's indisputably one of the greatest jazz vocalists out there. I don't know that much else needs to be said. Her band on this one is great too. The rhythm section of Roy Haynes and Richard Davis have each been on albums with almost all of the greats of the time, across a multitude of styles and genres. Jimmy Jones is no slacker either, and has been on a number of great "meat and potatoes" jazz albums over the years.

The tracklist fits the job at hand well, stacked with nothing but classic standards. That's the reality of playing bar and club gigs, a situation that, as any working musician can tell you, hasn't changed much in the intervening 66 years.

I don't think there's a question that Sarah Vaughan should have a spot on the 1001 Albums list. But is At Mr. Kelly's the one you MUST hear? I think so. Regrettably, despite being a world-class vocalist, a lot of Sarah's albums were cheesy, overproduced string section affairs, so it's a joy to hear her live with a "real" band. This is a very fun listen, and is well worth your time.

For the nerds, I listened to this in hi-res on Qobuz. I guess I should probably own a copy, but it's rare I find myself wanting to listen to jazz vocal albums. Maybe one day.

Next up, another jazz great, in a very different context: Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook (incidentally this has got to be in the running for longest album titles on the list).

FOUND HEAVEN - CONAN GRAY ALBUM REVIEW

TOP 3: Fainted Love, Alley Rose, Winner

Synth pop is back. Following his sophomore album ‘Superache’, Conan Gray released his highly anticipated 3rd album this April. The Japanese-American singer has shifted from his previous singer/songwriter aesthetic to that of a glam pop icon, although his exceptional songwriting and storytelling abilities still shine through, most notably on tracks like ‘Alley Rose’ and ‘Winner’.

Overall, this project is very reminiscent of Queen and ABBA, with clear Bowie & Elton John influence, especially on tracks like ‘Forever with Me’ and ‘Lonely Dancers’. It’s an album of love and heartbreak, taking the listener on a rollercoaster of emotions over half an hour. Unlike his previous two, this record was not produced by Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappel Roan, Caroline Polachek), but instead primarily by Max Martin, who worked on, Taylor Swift’s original ‘1989’ album in 2014, The Weeknd’s ‘The Highlights’, and more recently, Ariana Grande’s new album ‘Eternal Sunshine’ - the man is a pop legend. He knows what he’s doing.

The first and lead single, Never Ending Song, set the tone for this album back in May. It’s a vibrant synthy sound, aided by energetic drums to fully showcase Conan’s lower register vocals. The record overall gives off an 80s new wave synth vibe but also sounds like it should be in a 2000s movie soundtrack. Especially with well-received tracks like ‘Bourgeoisieses’, a fun rage song with rhythmic drive, and a synth bassline underneath seamless chorus vocald for added effect. Multiple layers reflect the multiple layers of society the song acknowledges, with Conan sings about the different classes of people and how he wanted to belong in a higher class when he was younger.

The piano ballad ‘Winner’ acts as a beautiful album closer, with even more stunning stacked vocals to really get the message across. Tissues are definitely needed for this one. He’s really started to return to his singer-songwriter roots whilst still managing to keep elements of this new sound such as electric guitar chords in time with the piano and dramatic drums to keep a rhythm and dramatise the song further on top of his hard-hitting, gut-wrenching lyrics.

I think overall I still prefer Superache, but this is an exceptionally well written & produced record. The experimentation has paid off greatly, and Conan suits this style very well. Many male artists these days stray towards performing with a band and stick to standing with a guitar so it’s refreshing to see a gen Z male artist that isn’t afraid to dance around a big stage and have fun with their fans. Conan also has plans to go on tour across Australia, Asia, North America & Europe later this year with support from British popstar, Maisie Peters & American alt pop duo, Between Friends. Having peaked at No. 4 on the UK album charts and No. 2 on the US Top Album sales chart, it’s obvious he’s going to be one of the next big names in pop.
