There was a Fairy on my front porch.

I've been throwing Fairy-themed parties since the 1990s. During the Pandemic, in the spring of 2022 I threw a backyard tea party at a friend's house and used their backyard. It had a fairy theme.

Since then, I've been throwing an annual spring Fairy Tea Party. There have been many fairies on my front porch.

We set up in the back yard. We live in a lovely house now, since the landlord kicked us out of the shitty apartment. We had canopies, tables and chairs, and a BBQ grill.

Tea at 4pm, dinner to follow. It was also my eldest's 30th birthday.

At 4pm, there was a Fairy on my porch. I had her come out to the back yard. Most of the rest of the fairies came straight back and joined us in the back yard.

And then, something surprising happened:

There was a walrus in my yard.

In fact, I missed the bigger surprise- the walrus actually came to the front porch and flapped on the door with one flipper. He came by bus. He wanted to party. It was a warm enough day that he shed his walrus suit after the initial surprise.

In reality this little pup got lost and ended up on someone's porch. Not to worry, the home owner did the right thing and the little guy is now at the Marine Mammal Care center who can evaluate them for any necessary care before release back into the wild. very curious to know how much of the fairy vs. walrus discourse is being propelled by the "people who live in landlocked countries/states vs. people who live on coastlines/islands" dichotomy

My take on the walrus vs fairy thing:

Right now, when I am not face-to-face with either, I do consider a real, magical fairy to be more unlikely than a walrus at my door (although the walrus would also be exceedingly unlikely).

However, in the moment?

In the case of the fairy, my first thought would be (depending on the appearance of the fairy): person in a costume? Hummingbird? Large insect? Trick of the light? All of those are much more likely (and less alarming) than either a fairy or a walrus, and would have to be ruled out before the true strangeness of the situation could really set in.

But a walrus? I would know immediately what I was looking at, how unlikely it is, and how dangerous it is.

In short, a fairy would make me blue-screen, but a walrus would make me scream and slam the door. Up to you which you would define as "more surprised," I guess.

Unexpected point of intense rage re:walrus fairy is that people keep posting ELEPHANT SEALS. Do we not know what a walrus looks like!!! The fucking TUSKS!!! THE TUSKS!!!!!! THE BEARD!!!

so the guy left to get full for the car. after two hours the girl say "where is my baby, he was supposed to be back by now". then the girl here a scratching sound and a voice say "LET ME IN"

the girl doesn't do it and then after a while she goes to sleep. the next morning she wakes up and finds her boyfriend still not there. she gets out to check and man door hand hook car walrus.

Listen the thing about walrus vs fairy is that fundamentally the question of shock is about the exact moment you open the door to find either a walrus or a fairy. Not how you feel after thinking about it for a bit - the initial surprise of opening the door to either a magical creature (which could look more or less humanoid) or a massive semi-aquatic animal (a fucking walrus)

Do you know how fuck off huge walruses are? Yeah I would have a bit of a crisis after learning magic exists and my understanding of the world has been completely re-written. But that’s still a fucking walrus, a large and sometimes aggressive sea animal which should not be anywhere near my house. My first reaction is going to be OH FUCK?? And probably closing the door before it gets inside or decides to be aggressive

I have no idea how this started but the fairy and walrus meme has brought me so much joy after several days of intense depressing stress. It's made me laugh. It's made me smile. Its made me feel like this world is still worth living in. The op of this should be so freaking proud. I have no idea who they are but they made a beautiful thing.
