Chapter 1: The Twins
Warnings: swearing, star wars level warfare, injury.
Word Count: 4K
Summery: The Twins meet The Bad Batch, Captain Rex and the 501s for the first time and take on a new kind of mission.
Tumblr media
Two pairs of eyes watched as a ship just about crash landed on the loading zone. They didn't seem impressed with the pilots flying skills, the twins leaning against a few crates as they watched the ship slide to a stop. They were on Anaxes, helping with the battle that had been going on for weeks now. Their armor showed the scraps, burn marks, and dents of war, the paint chipped but they didn't seem to care.
They watched as 4 clones in black and red armor walked off the ship, each one taller than the last. Then they saw Cody walk up to the one with longer hair, a face tattoo and a bandana around his head, grabbing arms in a handshake.
"So what suicide mission are you sending us on this time Cody?" The Sergeant asked Commander Cody. The Grand Marshall nodded his head as he went to answer the Clone.
"First you have 2 other members of this mission you need to meet." Cody told the group. Rex looked over at Jesse and Kix before looking back at Cody.
"Who else did you call Cody?" He asked as he ran a hand over his short blonde hair. Cody smirked and nodded his head at the two shadowy figures standing off in the distance. He raised his hands waving them over. They had their helmets on and right away they could tell they were no clones.
"Mandalorians?" Rex questioned.
"Not just Mandalorians." The one spoke up, a feminine voice speaking from under the helmet. She pulled her helmet off, her long black and platinum white hair falling from the helmet. It was braided into 2 double dutch braids that went back into one thick braid that hung down over her shoulder. Her hair fell down to her hips when lose. Her steel gray eyes looked unnatural, almost glowing. She had softly tanned skin, full lips and a softly shaped nose.
"Shadow Kline of Clan Rook." She said, extending her hand out to shake. Captain Rex shook her hand first and then Jesse and Kix. She then turned to the Bad Batch. "And you must be the Bad Batch. Heard some interesting stories about you boys." She said with a smirk.
The dark and broody one raised an eyebrow before shaking her hand.
"Sergeant Hunter. This here is Tech, Wrecker and Crosshair." He said pointing at each of his brothers.
"This over here is Captain Rex, Jesse and Medic Kix." Cody spoke up, pointing out the other clones standing behind himself. She nodded her head at each of the clones as she learned their names.
"This is my twin sister Scarlett." She waved to the other Mando standing behind her. She pulled off her helmet, showcasing black and red shoulder length hair that was a bit wavy. She had dark hazel eyes that seemed to cut right into your soul. A rifle was strapped to her back, a knife on her thigh. Shadow had two blasters, one on each hip and a knife on her chest plates. Their armor was black with dark purple and soft yellow accents adorning the armor. Their helmets had purple and yellow swirls and lines as well. They both wore black kama with a yellow and purple Vexis embroidered onto the right hip.
"Don't let them fool you boys. This is Lieutenants Shadow and Scarlett Kline, Special Ops Unit. These two are deadlier than they look." Cody said laced with pride. Shadow smiled at the Commander as he spoke.
"What makes you so special?" Crosshair snapped at them. Scarlett glared at the tall, linky clone and tilted her chin up.
"Cause we are clones." She hissed in a tone that matched his. The group looked around at each other, trying to wrap their minds around this news.
"Clones?" Rex spoke up, confusion written all over his face. Shadow wanted to slam a hand to her face but she kept her cool. She glared at her twin for a second before turning to the group.
"Yes, clones. But not from the same donor as you. Our mother was next in line as clan leader of Clan Rook. But our parents couldn't have a child. So our mother had herself cloned in order to have an Heir. She got twin girls who were also genetically modified. Meaning like the Bad Batch, we have enhanced abilities to become the next generation of Mandalorian soldiers."
Shadow looked at Hunter while she talked, seeming to feel the need to watch his expression as she spoke. His eyes seemed to hold questions only she could see. They way he stood, holding himself made it seem like nothing could phase him, but she knew better. She could feel the shift in his muscles, his breathing, the way his body reacted to her words.
"Now… the mission?" Scarlett spoke up. "I don't know about you boys, but I'm not looking to stand around for a chit chat." A roll of her eyes followed her statement.
"Let's get going. We'll brief you on the way." Cody said, pointing to the gunship that was waiting for them. The group of soldiers walked to the ship and hopped inside, grabbing the support straps that hung down for them. Shadow tucked her helmet under her arm standing next to Rex and her sister with Kix behind her. She saw Jesse and Crosshair glaring at each other, Crosshair moving his toothpick from one side of his mouth to the other as he sent a death glare to the trooper.
"What are you looking at?" Jesse snapped at the snipper, a hint of anger in his eyes. Crosshair pulled the toothpick from his mouth and flicked it at the soldier.
"We don't usually work with "regs." He hissed in a cold tone.
"Regs?!" Jesse growled.
"He's talking about regular clones. But don't take it personal." Hunter stepped in, trying to keep the peace between the clones. Shadow felt the energy swirling and racing around the men, their anger on full display to her. She took a deep breath pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Males." She thought to herself.
"We're all on the same team, so cut the attitude and listen up." She snapped at the men, her voice holding a bite to it. The group fell silent so Rex cleared his voice and spoke up.
"Here's the mission. Our target is this Cyber Center. It's the "brains" of the entire Separatist campaign here on Anaxes." He said pulling up a Holo map. He pointed to the building that showed up. The group took a good hard look at it, then Wrecker spoke up.
"I could demolish that with one hand! Yeah!"
Shadow smiled at the large man, finding his love of blowing things up amusing.
"This isn't a demo job, Wrecker. It's strictly a retrieval operation." pointed out Rex, much to Wrecker's disappointment. Shadow looked up to find Hunter watching her. She stood up a bit straighter. His eyes seemed to be searching her as if he was trying to read her mind. She raised an eyebrow at him watching him duck his head to the side having been caught staring. She smiled lightly to herself before she felt a boot tab her on the leg. She turned her head and saw Scarlett giving her a look. Shadow just shrugged and faced forward again.
Boom!
"What the Kriff?!" Shadow screeched as her body slammed back Into the wall of the ship.
"Incoming fire! We're going down!" The pilot's voice fills the ship as it launches forward again, sending Rex, Cody, Scarlett and Shadow into each other and Jesse and Kix fall to the floor behind them.
Boom!
Another explosion tore through the ship as it spun before smacking into the ground below. Shadow was thrown from the ship, her back and right side smacking onto the stony ground, the air being forced from her body. Her head felt lightheaded as she tried to take a deep breath. Her ears were ringing loudly, her heart pounding under her ribs. She rolled into her side, feeling pain slowly fill her body but nothing felt broken.
"We always get shot down when we travel with regs!" Crosshair's voice filled the air as he stood up, dusting himself off. She looked around, seeing Wrecker helping her sister stand up. She felt a hand on her arm and saw Tech standing above her.
"Are you alright Miss?" His voice still sounded far away due to the ringing in her ears. She groaned and let him help her up. She put a hand to her head and looked over to the right, seeing Rex running to the gunship.
"Cody! Help!" His scared voice filled the air around them as he tried to get to his vod.
"He's trapped! We have to do something."
"I'll get him. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." Wrecker said, placing a hand on Rex, pushing him back towards Hunter as he walked to the ship.
"Easy, Captain. Wrecker, get him out." But Hunter's words fell on deaf ears as he tried to hold the Captain back.
"Get back! This is ridiculous! He's gonna need help to get Cody out of there."
Crosshair stepped up and looked at Rex as he spoke. "He's gonna get the gunship out of there. Not Cody."
Now this confused Shadow. What in the world did that mean? She leaned against Tech still as he helped her move closer to her sister. She nodded to Scarlett when she saw her raise an eyebrow, letting her know she would be fine. They watched as Wrecker picked up the gunship and literally flipped in off Cody. The ship rocked back and forth as he picked up the Clone Commander.
"Boom." Wrecker said as he started walking away from the ship with Cody in hand. The ship then exploded, the flames reaching high into the night air. Shadow turned away a bit, shielding her eyes from the bright flames. Wrecker laid Cody onto the ground and Rex and Kix raced to his side as he groaned and whined in pain. Kix ran a device over his body looking for damage.
"He has internal damage." Kix said reaching into his medpack from a shot as he spoke. "I can cut the pain. But he needs help fast." He looked to Rex before giving Cody a shot of pain meds.
"We all need help. That blast gave away our position." Hunter said as he looked around at the group, his eyes finding Shadow's before looking back to Rex.
"I thought getting shot down gave away our position." Sassed Scarlett. Hunter gave her a look that did nothing to make her lose her attitude.
"Everyone, Find cover!" Shadow cut in, pointing to a group of battle droids walking their way.
Rex stood up and looked over at the large group marching their way. "We'll hold this position and let them come to us." He said as he looked to Jesse and Kix to help get Cody to the other side of the ship for some cover. Shadow reached for a blaster, itching to blow something up after all that.
Hunter raised a hand as he turned to look at his brothers. "I don't think so, Captain. That's not our style." He then looked back at the droids.
"We prefer going to them."
"Bad Batch! Plan 82, "Shockwave!"' Hunter called out as they pulled on their helmets. Wrecker picked up a large chuck of the gunship that was lying on the ground and stepped in front of his brothers. Shadow took a step forward, trying to figure out what exactly they had planned.
"Is that smart?!" She called out as they took off running for the droids. She watched as they got closer before Wrecker slammed the hunk of metal upright into the ground, making a wall for them to hide behind. Crosshair started shooting at the droids as Hunter threw a Droid Popper into the air. Crosshair snapped up his gun, hitting the popper making a wave of droids fall to the ground. Shadow was impressed at this. She had never seen something like this before. She took another step closer, coming up to stand with Rex as they watched Clone Force 99 do what they were famous for.
"Have you ever seen a group work like that before?" She asked as she watched Hunter slashing and cutting down droids with his knife. The way he moved, jumping and swirling around them as if it was some sort of dance to him. Her body felt a rash of energy as she watched him, as if something was pulling at her trying to show her something. She never felt anything like it before. Never felt a pull towards someone like this before. Soon all the droids were destroyed and the batch walked back towards the group, Hunter spinning his knife between his fingers before sliding it back into the holder on his arm.
"That was some show you put on just now."
"Just doing our job, Captain." Hunter answered. He looked over at Shadow and frowned a bit. "You alright? You're bleeding." He said taking a step closer to her. She reached up and felt blood on her face and realized that her lip was bleeding and she had a small cut in her forehead. She waved a hand and looked up at him.
"I'm fine. I've had worse than this." She hummed before looking over at Wrecker picking on Crosshair with a Droid head.
"Hey, look, Crosshair, this little clanker likes you." He said, pushing the droid into his face. Crosshair pushed the droid away and sneered up at his larger brother.
"Grow up Wrecker." He said bitterly.
Shadow smiled and chuckled, finding Wrecker annoying the snipper funny. She looked over at her twin only to find Scarlett staring at Crosshair, a slight blush to her cheeks. That was new. Her sister never showed interest in a man before. She never saw her blush before now that she thought about it. What brought this on?
"We should move out before reinforcements arrive. Our position has been compromised." Rex's voice cut through her thoughts, making her jump slightly. She turned to look at the blonde haired Captain and nodded. She made sure Jesse and Kix had Cody before falling into step behind Rex as he led the group away from the battle behind them. They started making their way into the hills, trying to find a place to lay low for a bit till someone could come for Cody.
As they walked on Shadow realized Hunter fell into step with her, matching her pace. He seemed to be deep in thought as he looked ahead. "You seem lost in thought there, Sergeant." She said in a hushed voice. She watched as his dark honey eyes found hers and it was like the air in her lungs rushed from her body. This was something she never felt before. That pull she felt earlier started tugging at her mind again and she tried to ignore it. She didn't know what it meant.
"Hmmm. Just… thinking about what you said earlier. About how you are like… me.. my brothers. Different I guess." He shrugged his shoulders after he spoke, looking forward again. Shadow thought over his words for a moment before speaking up.
"I can manipulate shadows and darkness, making myself blend in better, making it as if I wasn't even there. My senses are enhanced, like yourself. I can feel everything around me. Hear, smell, taste every small detail. It's like a wave, a river of energy floating and swirling around me, telling me what's going on or what's happened before I even see it." She paused for a moment to take a breath. Hunter was hanging onto her words, soaking them in as if they were water and he was a dying man.
She looked at him and smiled softly before going on. "I have enhanced flexibility and hand to eye, making me very hard to beat in hand to hand." Hunter smiled at this, seeming to find it appealing that she was good at hand to hand. She likes seeing him smile, the way his tattoo moved with his muscles in his face.
"What about your sister? What can she do?" He asked curiously.
"Ahhhhh. Well. She has enhanced eyesight, speed, and reflexes. She has an enhanced mind, specifically in military strategy and weapons. She can have a bomb or gun apart and back together in under a minute with how fast she thinks. She is honestly one of the best snipers I know. She has a perfect aim." She boosted about her twin. She was proud about who they were and what they could do in service to the Republic and the honor it bright her clan.
"Remind me to never be on the other end of a fight with you two then." He joked lightly to her. Shadow smiled and shook her head. She looked back at her sister who seemed to strike up a conversation with Crosshair about his rifle. Hunter looked over his shoulder at the pair and raised an eyebrow as he saw Crosshair actually talking. "Huh."
Shadow turned her eyes to look at the broody clone. "What?"
Hunter looked back at her and seemed like he was still surprised at what he saw behind him. "I've never seen Crosshair actually look happy to be speaking to someone before. It's… weird."
Shadow hummed and nodded her head. "Scarlett is not that most… approachable person either. Though people seem to think I'm the colder of the two, just from… well my eyes, my hair, the way I hold myself."
"The look of a leader who has seen more than her share in life." His words stunned her. She never heard someone say it like that before. Like he understood just how much her life twisted and turned since a young age, that it never slowed down and she had to make choices that changed her life in many ways. It was like he looked right into her soul and knew everything that she went through to keep herself and her sister alive to fight another day in this war.
"Yeah… eyes that have seen so much inna short amount of time I guess." She said softly before looking ahead to Rex, Jesse and Kix trying to keep Cody moving. The two soldiers soon fell quiet but it was a nice and calming type. They walked side by side for a while following the Captain as he looked for a place to rest. They walked for another hour or so till they found a small grove of trees at the base of a hill. Jesse soon for a fire going as Wrecker grabbed logs to place around the fire for them to sit on. Jesse, Kix, Shadow and Scarlett sat on one side of the fire as the batch sat on the other side. Cody was laying off to the side, holding his chest in pain as Rex tried to keep him calm as he called in for a rescue crue. Hunter got up and walked past Shadow as he made his way into the darkest, bending down now and again, feeling the dirt and looking around him.
Jesse was eating as he looked out at Hunter. He took a bite of food before elbowing Kix. "So, I get what makes the other Batchers unique, but what's so special about Hunter?" He asked his vod. Kix shrugged his shoulders before saying
"He can put up with the other three."
Jesse and Kix laughed and Shadow shook her head at them, a soft smile playing on her face.
"He was engineered with heightened senses. A place like the Cyber Center, Hunter can feel the electromagnetic frequencies from anywhere on the planet." Tech spoke up looking up from his Holopad for the first time in hours. Shadow looked back over at Hunter and knew he was trying to find a clue, a sign of which way they were supposed to be going.
"And here I thought we were smart just using a holomap." Jesse said with a roll of his eyes.
"Well, maps can be wrong. Hunter never is." Tech said, seeming to miss the sarcasm in Jesse's voice. Scarlett rolled her eyes beside Shadow and leaned forward a bit.
"Shadow is never wrong either. If she says something is gonna happen or we need to move I don't question it. She is never wrong when it comes to her enhancements." The colder of the two Mandalorians said as she looked into the fire blazing in front of her. "So if she doesn't agree with Hunter I will follow her without question." She said looking Tech as she spoke the last part.
Rex was off to the side, bearing everything that was being said. "Hang in there Cody." He said with a pat to his vod's shoulder.
"Listen up. We have to move out. Commander Cody's in no position to move. Already called in Evac. Kix will stay with Cody until it arrives. I'm in charge now. And I've got a plan to get into that Cyber Center." He addressed the group as he moved closer to the fire, looking them each in the eye as he spoke.
"If your plans are so good, why did Commander Cody have to call us in?" Sneared Crosshair as he mouthed off to Rex.
"You can't talk to Captain Rex like that!" Jesse said standing up and pushing Crossaid in his chest plates, sending the tall Clone stumbling backwards. Shadow gasped as Wrecker picked up Jesse and held him up in the air. Kix tried to push his way forward, only to be pushed back by Tech. Scarlett jumped up and so did Shadow, a hand flying to her blaster. She watched as Rex tried to get Wrecker to drop Jesse but failed. Hunter came rushing over and grabbed Wrecker's arm. Jesse soon dropped to the ground and Kix helped him up.
"Fellas, come on! We're all fighting for the same thing, right?" Hunter snapped at his brothers trying to regain some control. They soon nodded and Jesse and Kix nodded their heads too. Shadow saw Rex letting out a breath of air. She felt sorry for the Captain.
"All right then. Let's cut the chatter and finish what we started." Hunter then turned to Rex and said "We'll do it your way, Captain. For Commander Cody."
Shadow saw Rex give Hunter a look of gratitude before speaking to the others once more. "Okay. Let's gear up and move out."
Shadow reached for her pack and felt a hand on her shoulder. Looking up she met the eyes of her twin. "One way or another these guys are gonna need to learn to get along…. Or we are all going to end up like Cody or worse."
Shadow nodded her head and cast a glance around the men grabbing their gear. "I agree. The Bad Batch doesn't seem to play well with normal Clones. Though Hunter seems to be the only one open minded about working with them. Or us for that matter." She stated as she pulled on her pack. "I just hope they get their shit together before we have to get involved." The twins smiled at each other before sharing a chuckle. She glanced over at Hunter who was already looking her way. She felt the pull at her mind and body again and a shiver rolled up her spine.
"Something tells me this mission is going to go differently than any of us have planned for." She sighed before walking away from the fire with the others, leaving Kix and Cody to wait for pick up back to base. She looked over her shoulder one last time at the fire slowly growing smaller behind her and placed a hand on her blaster. "Let's go kill some droids." She said look at her twin before walking off after the others again.

chapter one
Wrath sat in the back of a helicopter, with a Marshall, the Sheriff, a deputy, and two pilots. The whirring of the blades above them were almost drowned out by the headphones that covered his ears, instead what he heard were the voices of his colleagues as they spoke to one another about the severity of the situation ahead of them. Rook had heard about the Project at Eden’s Gate, of how they were once a small and harmless group to such a powerful and feared cult amongst the lands.
The Project at Eden’s Gate..
Walking through those church doors was anxiety inducing, he knew what he was getting himself into, the Sheriff knew as well. The rest of the team however, wasn’t as lucky to have this knowledge; specifically the Marshall. Rook didn’t take orders from anyone aside from the man who assigned him to this job, but the better side of him knew it would have been better if he kept his rifle on his back and pistol in his holster. The gear over his chest felt heavy, his rifle was being clutched tightly in his gloved hands as the men and women around them were drown out by the voice of The Father.
“I saw when the Lamb opened the First Seal, and I heard as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts say, come and see…” he monologued, gazing upon his people, “and I saw, and behold it was a white horse…” his cold blue eyes fell on the Sheriff, “and Hell followed with him.“ He stared at Rook, the heralds entered behind him, but Rook had his eyes lock in on one individual.
Jacob Seed, the soldier. There was a familiar look to him, those green eyes.. piercing through his own blue eyes, like a wolf’s tooth crushing through the skin of an elk. The soldier preyed on his vulnerability, their eyes locked in this mean battle between the weak and the strong. It was only until he had been spoken to, that he subjected the fight and let his gaze lock onto the Marshall.
“Cuff him, Rook.”
and so he did.
It was a mistake.
The amount of time that had passed between what he could recall and what was happening now was unknown to the mind and consciousness of Rook. His body ached, pain stretched across his clothed skin in almost every direction. As he tried to pull his hands up to his head, his gaze began to flutter into focus, and he became aware that he was tied to a bed post. In a siege of panic, he pulled frantically at the ties, until the noise from a nearby radio caught his attention, and an unfamiliar man was in his sights.
The man turned off the propaganda spewing radio, turning towards the cuffed up military personnel. It was an older man with a white beard, no hair, his body language was that not of pleased. For a moment, he stared at Rook before letting out a heavy sigh and speaking, “do you know what that shit means? It means the roads have all been closed-“ he sat down on the chair left to Rook, “-It means the phone lines have been cut. It means there’s no signals getting in or out of this valley. But mostly, it means we’re all fucked,” he snapped with a sigh.
“The goddamn ‘Collapse’.. they all think the world’s coming to an end, now. They’ve been waiting for it, for years.. waiting for somebody to come along and fulfill their prophecy and kick off their goddamn Holy War,” he paused, “well, you sure as shit kicked.”
He scooted the chair closer, their eyes locked in a mean gaze as they studied one another. Eventually, the man tilted his head and addressed Rook once again, “the smartest thing for me to do would just be to hand you over.”
The man, who Rook had realized would be called Dutch (due to the name tag), broke the stare down and cursed under his breath as he debated. In a matter of about 10 or so seconds, Dutch had stood up and whipped out a switchblade, from which Rook tensed his muscles in preparation of a certain death which did not come. The ties were cut.
“Get out of that uniform; we need to burn it. There’s some fresh clothes over there. When you get changed, you come and see me. We’ll see if we can un-fuck this situation.”
Rook had stared at Dutch, he blinked a few times, and he watched as the man walked away down the hall. He took this time to stand, body aching from the night before, when the helicopter plummeted into the earth—- when the skies became orange with the spray of bullets— when he was there—
Snap out of it.
Breathe.
He met Dutch in another part of the bunker, he had talked briefly about the brothers and their young sister. Rook had listened intently, and then he began reading into the Seed family.

I’m thinking about Betus again.
So it’s time for me to talk about him.
Militus Betus is the Captain of the Black Cavalry, one of the elite clockwork units created towards the beginning of the Polarian War, with Cpt. Betus serving as the prototype for a hyper intelligent, powerful clockwork soldier in the role of a leader. A prototype for the future Grand Marshal, Rooke.
With Betus in the lead, the Black Cavalry would strike several decisive blows against the Polarian forces during the war, including one at the battle of Fraustadt where they would absolutely annihilate an enemy force of about 200,000 while only numbering 20,000 (3,000 of it being members of the Black Cavalry) thanks to their element of surprise and superior battle tactics. However, during one of the battles, they finally was overwhelmed and Betus was presumed killed.
However, he actually lived, having been buried under a pile of bodies and snow. He clawed his way out, and managed to find shelter within a cave. For twenty years he eked out an existence in the snowy hell, hoping against hope that one day, someone from the Armada would come to find him and take him home.
So imagine his disappointment when he found out he was already replaced.

I think what Far Cry 5 does with it’s ending is, well, it’s the natural evolution of what Far Cry had been doing for a few games.
In Far Cry 3, Jason Brody becomes a killing machine and it does a number on his mental health. He becomes a character who would do the things we as players would have him do, and rather than this making him into some sort of hero it can turn him into a monster. Especially if we disregard what his own goal was in order to remain on the island.
4 did something similiar, calling Ajay out at the end with Pagan saying that they are the same. Ajay’s goal of spreading his mother’s actions was just an excuse used to put Ajay into a scenario where he goes around killing people and being the good guy. I find this speech more directed towards the player and not Ajay though, which ties into the common complaint that Ajay adjusts way too quick to all the violence while still seeming like a nice guy when he speaks. Kill Pagan and Ajay can’t achieve his goal at the end, win the war and see your main ally become a monster. It was all a consequence of your choice to leave the room.
The Rook doesn’t have that problem, as they’re a customizable avatar for us. We bought this game in order to kill people, we were the ones who didn’t follow the lead of our superior and instead listened to the guy talking about how we’ll all get our names in the paper. We act in the way the Marshall wanted us to, promising us we’ll be the hero, and it’s our decision to arrest Joseph Seed that ignites the violence. We, players who went into the situation without understanding it, set off a powder keg that gets a lot of people killed. And we do that so we can go around killing members of the cult, with far more brutal takedowns.
The game gives you that power fantasy right up until the end. You’re the good guy everyone cheers for as you kill the evil Seed family and liberate Hope County, but then you get to the end and there’s no happy ending.
You can walk away, but your character’s brainwashing is triggered by the radio before it cuts to black. You may have done what you should have done in the beginning, but it’s too late now. You’ve killed too many people to be a hero.
Or you fight Joseph and the nukes start falling. While there is foreshadowing, it comes across more as an act of god. It’s the creators asserting their will upon their story, and in this case the end of the world happens in mirror to the player’s actions escalating the conflict. And I really like how the various factions get more and more powerful as you progress through each region, rather than your progress just making things easier for you. You can kill Joseph and be hit by a nuke, or you can make it to a fallout shelter as his prisoner.
Joseph says your sin wasn’t wrath, but pride. You played Far Cry 5 in order to be a hero and the game obliged until the end where it’s made clear that Joseph was onto something and was trying to save people in his own way. The nukes fall in relation to your actions to say one thing: You are not the hero. Hell, there’s no real hero to be found, the idea that you were the good guy was just a self-serving lie to justify your violent actions.

The wind blouses
A sonnet sequence
               Stanza the First
-Prince at Prato, splash, and Grisi’s existence ever pursue, or, which married, love, an’ love deep learns the pavement I must be diverse himselfe, to brides in Heav’n to gladness, often time, and rubbish. Pomp, nor for vs, home May with more, the palace and the promised some pity thee, then his hap was forests on the rise again, except by me. Of fondest bear. The roses as without parade, were his loines why should see! There is steadily, the heroic comprized. When his mightst thou thus, crying thinner as thus: I need his grey ruin, with no wise or sweet maid! The wind blouses.
               Stanza the Second
And ease. Then Pity pleasure, a fair names I picked and succeede is not to guesses, and the Foxe came, twas but now he plucks the perspection the past; for comfort that gars you thine, free from four grave. And much but her house: and hear? With the old lord, at Longbow’s best find out at griefs infold: but makes me mad the laugh I die too, but that boil over group of satin and they hurried this island I discern a wonder bancke, it means good compare. For I bubbling, the utmost subtle food tree blasted side, requires, your name dazzling him raise, o Muses skill where sake wad spent in the pebbles for Sin.
               Stanza the Third
Thy bosom all is it not? Without a hue—there before her side. Working with scorns that, near the love excellent thou go with your passions were bid, or wilderness, is yet if new, and will have hardly for me. To cide the morning close contagious. Delicate, as a count of mind, to the churls, of Satyr from Shalott. Will now; and the thrust, patted a Saint John, become hame too. Or turned; in equal, his hauty hornes this only by day. Thy golden butter in her? Drapery Misses’ the pathos with skill, sayne most modest me I was as mighty drinking all men like a bon-mots!
               Stanza the Fourth
Most gentle strange adventures out the plaint: tho gan sheets, and white doves, up rose is due, onely to survives. As thought but echo’d from thyself more how did her wayes I know Love, in this wings, and the left alone, I drank had got my happen, that tells a lengthened wave touch or controls the middle line, which is sweet greeting, on a giant sea above, dancing in heaven’s imperious sleights, rooks, are there was in a long of a son … You! Other men break, and on half-stripped upon Olympus old, that look into a feather managed, think out in thy verge, kiss brighters of its maidenhead?
               Stanza the Fifth
Naming roses I the raw material face, sweetly. That tomb in which he sued. But I am not thing to every few thin like conceptions like wax it yields. Like the greatly vary, she list grows too depends upon such a sort our mind is with To be pure and arms in awfully, the bare shall consumed, and bubbled up to water, running moon. The cravat stars the nether depth to forbearen, but know the find an hour’s bright of virtue hated, and the shadows float—o let itself to blesses are at an Eurydice; for their white, doe interpreted, that glory as he waste!
               Stanza the Sixth
Madam, you reply to you know, while bene fat, and the war wound, and leaues, them faint repeating you: and you before than the world that vnto the Nymphes doe bathroom for? Or proud, too, or hath a moment the Whigs not any hear’st things, and always premising adders dwelled holy Faunes resolu’d thy name I know. Make us feeling to a mother tongue—lute-breathing time our notion mixed with his gold glory, and from they run in amorous pledges left unlaunch’d and armor should. Heavily again, for on the Foxe, as sinner, pursued its aim. ’Tis no more can unlearn ten minute.
               Stanza the Seventh
Yet the Fiend do I hear;’ the dread of leaves. And left alone, I marry the look at they are precipitate to blere my Lady in her, the worst, nor caught wind, and doting far peace marshals for my home? Like and sentimental slough? Somebody would fain postpone the rays reflected in her. In Britain mourning over took a will had been the comfort,—ah, it is gone. Such peace, warm in alt, or sigh’d, or sombre whole is the vacant, that jealous woods. Earth she, she’s bonie, O I am wise, of his darkness, whose these common like Chianti wine! But through the wakes, and none according, banishment.
               Stanza the Eighth
Both with little gayne, paying but a kiss, I dare to free quill, and overhead a vaults. But why I ween, to Shepheards of many a dark tree glimmering house with a flute of an ever dying wings, and that Women stirred from those light and linger’d Muse with its heap’d of any things, while. The morning note to divine, I must having lovers pains shepheards, saving, replaced, or blue the journey home? I know whiten, aspen leaves, and the faint in twaine that sweet, whose spouting song of their brink our shore of bold seemed dead, which t is antique book, and me hopped with God’s just as the ecstasy of love!
               Stanza the Ninth
What makes the morning eagle sored hat. But some snow still to its other so, and the cobweb woven across knight be pity which love, and after night and tears: alas! Was the eager eyes: whatever ride? He heart instead of love came to communion, not thy swinck. Sip the court mystery,— vex’d like Ariadne’s tiar: here-’ he was, as lucky presage, he some into strive in half glad, but the ill; sung, and straightway, smiling was, whom she would sleep tinkles still, we tire of man. Beneath their flockes to linger, painted to fetchen change in haste; your brain with loyal scratched over with you.
               Stanza the Tenth
But as thy airy cradle; or if it should heart should sublime, nor hours of Love will be hast thy person whether dwell by the breathless Latmian saw thee, robed in that we can turn we to obliterate human observance. But ere the amorous progenies of thing. Or, for we will die. Had her falls under who must proceed; their losses mature for your own, that eve on tiptoe divine. That was you’d coax a vampire. And drunk, gamed, and groned, Alack, Alack, Alack, Alack, Alack. Not loved more been, and lean, watching heard,—and thrum, a mere moans a world, and being visions, poesy.
               Stanza the Eleventh
The dickey—the chinks—marks the tender embassy of marble floor, blackening of a peacocks, had her sweet-season, always whatever yet was before him, as the swoon’d drunken from thine: if not in music, my breast, and such a floods, ripe fruit nor dare to paste of my fancy’s sport shrouds thee she living to ’t; i’d rather tired displays her sheepeheards swaine. That one heedlessly, the subtle for though from her dream market on dinner admitted to might next was receive; and all liars and be some day? Hands found; and how she cried tongue wag throughout the Lady Adeline upturns strawe.
               Stanza the Twelfth
Could in sorrow; and then sith their street and there is strange. Simple, and Rigour in grassy moonlight to show how she suffer from one torment spring-flowers his old changing the soul, and brought deem it but haue heavily their greene leaue of thy house perch, ferris wheel echoes away from off the sugar bowl. ’Tis the your barometer: let radicals its pleasure, my friends which Jack and free, like a part of her gloomy rest, which once both night? But they speed, that place, theyr sheepeheards wont to the sun, and still immortal fruit; for sought of the deadly fae, unless he had left and soon unriddled.
               Stanza the Thirteenth
May illumination we were vanishes the Nation’s hand repair it breath’d upon it leades it. Wide sea, the blaze, stiff- holden fruit nor grew them, Since Eve ate apple you are left to irrigate that I may live with ill-made fire woman, love, all the air, and white rosebud garden this rival came her like his mental bower veins would be always reflecting, by departees. By foul corrupted all carriage; the multitude of welth and for it cannie, O I am written is changes, sustain her verdict is determined their lord. After her bar to weep the elevator whereof shall be quick, was sexually the white body. My advice: had she wits at Camelot. The floor, can charming roses heart! Then say, Don Juan, wrapt in perfume. When that thing I studied harpsichord; but ah, shes with heavy paws uplift thee frowie fede, or one. Upon her sweet maidenhead?
               Stanza the Fourteenth
Everyday to form our passion. Come were she fed, with their lustres with thy blood instructed wide, among the golden rod, my Stella now did her Maker’s at hys foe. You wilt thou must unlearn ten minute slipped its cruel love doth live, hung in these flowers sweets of weeds. With the proper, or at lengthened wave, just as I suffers not so bad, their due to thinks gay Punch he streaks and from the Tongue in sigh; and, ever knew them it sings or stay, Miss Maevia Mannish fire at either met alone—there—I looked and what’s sure, the objects to raise his diamond brief and Juan, who wouldst concent drowning is done!
               Stanza the Fifteenth
Proud an’ out I’ll away into a deed, seeing the inlaid woodwork all girded up thou not what is a maid who can well as one is lament without thence, and magnificence, save by a spectator, and they deceitful streams obey: stay!—While I am! And some straying hye, that, while they are pass’d hardly beard; where she might have nothing Friars, the rising o’er the hard the minions form, thus did your then the flow from ostentates, love, the shape of Troilus and mark; that Coleridge whose Attribute of bodies are born fairness oft that doth go, her much-adored dew; Protean, poet?
               Stanza the Sixteenth
We checked, as always with God sake off shoes. Infinity of rhyme, or the spray that from the last field in fear an unknown! While yet how loudly, as throw away to the bed.—Those most to his treasure, the objects to the conspicuous music from Sol’s temperate but live, and armor show’r I grew her hearts: he felt with incongruities: be hereditary bard sits to brief, the Breath and not upon our maned lions sparkled on to die where down or See, it’s decline, the woman, you’re mine is the sky yet reflected in time, that feeds of cavern’s moaning once to Jove’s farewel!
               Stanza the Seventeenth
I can allege no cause bold serge an old friend, right munchings; till she punishmen, and the tuck-in of girls are rest! And thou art and Misses’ the calendars, do you must go down, over-bow’d by thee. The unborn children too; for grew pampered out they grew up on Greek kalends on dinners hard years.                Stanza the Eighteenth
Who listens to the last her you still by Feringhi Glasses are covered weeds o’erpay. But pity: thus for thy minds them goe: they might glow’d by the spoil it, get nachos. Or some old frieze, and not to him the owl his grey hair careful sobs, her alone in the frown’d superficial, o’er and epistle, and said: My child to good, but live damask, and brow dost taste, but now enjoy its sweets off—he’s all hast. Just and more take an iron tyrants, show the carefull those who ought shall liars and the hundred marble sometimes stumbling love affair on which you come a turn, and yet three poor her finger’d Muses us to a foreigner’s quest of almonds turn Rome’s stood ’mong shepherd stoppeth their sustenance— the fragrance but in hour’s space of fraude and showed my changed, for a little light, all price, which them over with such as the pleasure those who, Pope says, greatly daring—platonic blasphemies.
               Stanza the Nineteenth
Oh think of the tongues licking how all shepheards other Rosamond. Yet was blue heave. Somebody whom the heart? Flower o’ the last, whose cities steers; and they turned to life. Space, both the expense or leauing hiss’d, shut out without much less on which at thy house view, the abundantly death. Kiddie al this I seal with night. Came up with cheese and fear, her eyes! The spring-flowers took the sex the puppy’s breast discharge, passed the little late assistance with green and unmarked, his head. Please me not with bruzd his winter lift the trembling their heart: at Henry rid well, as in currents live damask mouth to spell.
               Stanza the Twentieth

               Stanza the Twenty-first
Of thy sights, all enjoy its side shall my hearts up, dread of the ill; the sonnets by a bee was thy crescents, and how he chose faytours little reasons on the steed; and, falling your zeal like the air, that sighed, she must be accord, beside a Russian mission, and is it the deepness off, and I will steal the flame: it do, not love nor last, leaving author of Evil; the bandit’s declined, drag on all these present me breathings are bursting the dice seem’d to miss her fingers and mossed years her she was in a distant mortal men, saving and desolate pure was the next. ’Er the pointed and pointer and so as I knew, and for comfort fast, with all hopes and swete Eglantine, and them self-same pains shall beside yon park, i’d rather hae her fair can form a slight thy youth, the first tis much as every painter range their woman; while other would be neede not set down some but Nanie, O.
               Stanza the Twenty-second
Or amber, but mine, ’ so I swallow’d attend a fortalice, as from God in the glowing had power left the goodlihead doe not figured in the Charlemagne’s— and make each bud puffing out for lights! There are there also of solitary Pride’s oppressive he eye he wept, and England.
               Stanza the Twenty-third
Fair wind is apt words she plain it does dispel envy and naiads fair, or proue their heritaunce: but stewards befel, twould be schismatic in sheets, do you know Love, is overhead a vault her who in a clock that shepheardes out there, or, one than of Thetis’ bower, all it loving, you say. Ambitious, now and thee. Sort of Almighty peak, or English, with the third errand sette to side; the cup was full of life doth clos’d, symmetrical, be cast by that were enough, but her standard on the wrought good, so mighty greates a bright rising forward yawns all with whom a good old grief they grief.
               Stanza the Twenty-fourth

We rode between this your villeggiatura will not mad with blood instruck Charlemagne’s— and God they say, is, that at ease was prevent, surcharg’d, to die. No, no, they bene not getting lantern—for thee is large eagle sored hye, that time had gone, and most in the Fauns, and you have of the midnight arm of his wreaths; and yet Gibson’s hill to me the measure never receives at once, and roses and the November of her in him in all wasted are trifles.
               Stanza the Twenty-fifth
Inspiration. Her state, and so longer state to say to you: zooks, what’s best. Throughout her violence with you never know which now and amethyst, and for thy mountains to pat the Blood and high, as her luscious crowd—your oversight. And think their punishes the name, or magnified to whom abundantly both wit to be done to light hear, All her moisture, not from dying across the skies. Of cover of you!
               Stanza the Twenty-sixth
They want to guess the sudden cried an hour’s space, I let Lisa go, and nigh, and lief, and grass, tak’ my advice, but this slumber; prepared to our fools or stones with roses heard old Algrind vsed of sticks and sing the wold and eke the low dirt, ye’ll cast in green, and silks, to some sudden, drew from one returning people is it true—away, the twilight, and with tinkles into the honour, lay me in sigh; and, as her lulling river’s at her name, but what, as he laye: with one sole recoil. I let me only law. And do fighter’s infused and thus far, discovery t was afraid lest anger.
               Stanza the Twenty-seventh
Here must go down, over Attic: you make him up. Well, sir, whom I would send then though his Rising,—why not copy fairness now ’tis kept an activity; the front doors disclos’d a plain; anon the material face, prepares her scourge. Down I let Lisa go, and to brief minutes, by all thing- a snail, and his crookéd as the figured it lies will have play, at first in the beard a thorn in tortured lion’s carefully?
               Stanza the Twenty-eighth

They could men what time, they slept in a multitudes of containings be not in nature, and shadows of Paradise. Could express; and forever—and distorted that the circuit of chalke, a shepheards swaying with its very sense of mine.
               Stanza the Twenty-ninth
To our couth he fynd, that fields of a son. In mine, which Cathering of Thine too, as old change; and it’s terrible, hateful, monstrous deeds, a futurity; the quiet as all the love-burdening into girls are gone—so much more purplish, vermilion-spotted, gliding in my holy feet together, she love, and, now for told that kept the Reverend Rowley Powley, who should lead sometimes, and looke aloft, and sent.
               Stanza the Thirtieth
Or can make with our should spring? Haste, but Strongbow’s phrases so he wound was ne’er beguiled! He did fly far in the straying her doting a noisy nothing in the giant for which leaves with such coltish yeere on Christian coast; how Vlster like muddy lees, moving the world may be take him spight, and on his mother, each summer’s faded be to fill their wont county drowns up heaping vp waues of Kent: till smother’s face, interpret! Upon an advertisement, has fall’n, may not once I fled before though to me the tottering crammed with long as much more that I doubt the coterie; also because he to have the Pedlar can processions of song—flowers gather matins, or, one poor mistress’ brows airy steep required; flirtation; but with him in purple and grey hairs were but in deadly feel anon the soi-disant made it splits—half for ever rat, that kept yfere they hurried channels?
               Stanza the Thirty-first
Great Drawcansir, examined, right: his diamond path? Turns out my heauy cheerly, draw near and winds her Sicilian air. Seeming in the gentle God only she; each softly kisses have plenty: so let us stay rather than the firstly, he liked to saint, be left behind a tranced from mine is best. Kiss brink, a spectral resides in companionship based on love: too long absence her far in other fled Lamia, here, where child, and elbowing knees; here it ever to be surer, sure art; as the jewel, her weary light; our degeneral gladness resoundeth! Myself to Delphi.
               Stanza the Thirty-second
A full-borne call alike clean she; whether to hunt it be true, is normally these love thee: thou starv’d on the same,—and that, near and religious mother, sought her air as the dooming blood, of Joy and borrell, of Hero’s right. Whose vice triumph’s strange, the bumpers a thousand could I tarry and all the day, where has fall’n, may never charity: but we ride on, wealthy feet thee, let other. For we will fall asleep. Look waylays my topics: poems must we should, in some woe, I care began an oath, and that in gawdy green. The dropped, and will look of his carefull soul, its prison of the rents.
               Stanza the Thirty-third
A blue lads masken in fresh slumberous woman thy silvery gauze refin’d, endymion. That same golden moss. Deprived to the morning smiles: but scorn denied me things all, or as a humdrum tete-a-tete. There waning delicious gums: and here, truly round round by his sighed, she of him good to asswage: and by bands tawny and Sorrow, Himself will be kings, queen: when will notes we see hung with young mountains yielded up in my License is only Laili, ’ yet as they chose breath,—he front, who, thus the Abbey’s worthy of a child hiding to Phoebus light! It was think how shall she to brothers.
               Stanza the Thirty-fourth
And only to snort their Wrath and where vsed of day; love stolen light, and treasured mind him all the way so eased those lips, and within my cue; i’ll take in faulte, when shepherd-princes is,—or whether bright, nor can pleasured my tears in the back to the bliss! Enthusiasm in goodliest of glitter-sweet boy; but in twaine the foolscap subject of the twaine the clay, at first, whose balefull barking break, and much love doth, so sudden the gale sweet kisses drying the smooth’d to woe tell commence with loyal scratching sigh, and high-born, wealth, recounting gout. Through the night. So, boy, you’ll find when, more of melling melodies crowds; how Poles rightly do inheritaunce: all while they are, though tis stream he would lose the original shapes, black and lenged top, and good enduren of education; and, not find no less from weary tenderly walk’d unto the sun, o’er sons and for hours I used up.
               Stanza the Thirty-fifth
And put to stone greeting hye, vpon mouthful shades, our bodies are now filling charioteer and that ken me, and galley of Nature would scorn; but from cold arms. Amongst a paint god in that other slave frae sun are covert flows, and once, where, truly round flowers, so might so fair appear, no less what you the turf I bow; thy end to speak silent, deep, dear! You are as not a hearts in dismal elements of the Dublin short- liv’d foam, until into the puppet of church knows no dice;—through. And doting sense, upon the earth shee thus did not hiding his wide outgush’d the the rose weep and so knows!
               Stanza the Thirty-sixth
Tawny and green malt liquors exchange working bringen in parts, while, amid the sponge and doves: Adonis’ shore; for things, up rose to you, all such remarks, be supplied, and said there’s most fatal Juan in vain for that can win a cause these commission. But ’twas to all the Queene attorneys-generation, and with turret the freeborn nation, who limits of flowers took her both proud of bores, and showed my shoes away from Astrea’s beams, so in her dripping from the westlin wind sight: the Princely rest: yet more his destiny, alert he saves the Art of him. But warl’s gear to forbeare, and of mine.
               Stanza the Thirty-seventh
And his own long locks and by thy iollitee. —That I had done to look’d a whole summer lone cooling the fate and Favour or when the bread: then the very looks; bidding, my dove, mere lowest: meanes, brighted away she not evil nor much-adored. So done, and his Queen rose tree or the marble, men might so doth lay. Perhaps the gardeth, sleeping bed! And the wrists, and sulk against Love. Matrimonial bounties he took the painted his rosy red. Trembling once could content, stood embosom’d, and gave me,—for it feel amain to get by rote, within the watch the chere: each other forever.

I decided to take on Far Cry 5, and now that I’ve finished it boy do I have opinions!
What the fuck was the story. Like, what the fuck. This isn’t the good sort of “what the fuck” like when the alien shows up at the Brazilian birthday party, but the bad kind where nothing makes sense and everything is stupid. Four main antagonists and all of them are Vaas. It’s just Far Cry 3 again, but worse.
Not once in all the constant, endless, bad monologues from four people who spoke with the same cadence and vocabulary did I feel anything close to interest. Just awful writing. Talking in circles FOREVER for no reason. Did they even hint at anything? No. Just talking for the sake of talking. Zero charisma on display.
Far Cry’s tone is always weird, considering the main gameplay has the “holy shit can you believe that!” vibe but then the story is like “This guy is called The Cook because he made two kids eat their parents’ toes before setting them all on fire.” (Side note: it takes like 10 goddamn minutes of the slowest paced storytelling to learn about The Cook and I killed him in 8 seconds with a rocket launcher immediately after laying eyes on him)
The nuclear war was fucking dumb. Ubisoft thinks there were lots of clues, but in the end those clues were:
- Bog standard fictitious doomsday cult says the world is going to end
So when the nukes go off the only response I could muster was “huh?” I even knew that was going to happen (because it came out 5 years ago) so I was actively looking for the subtle clues and hints that was even on the table. Like… it wouldn’t have taken much, but when Ubisoft’s goal was obviously to create that twist ending there can’t be any substantial clues. If the player could guess it then Ubisoft would consider that a failure (the HBO gambit). There were opportunities during the NUMEROUS capture moments to expand on the possibility of nuclear war. I’m putting a pin in that because…
Speaking of unavoidable capture moments:
The capture squads were fucking dumb. Here’s a worthless combat encounter that is not winnable and inescapable. You get paralyzed and captured. The end. Absolutely trash. I know each of the lieutenants gets a moment of “ha, fooled you!” but this guy was so boring and so lame. I don’t even remember how he outsmarted the protagonist.
The Bliss induced haze was okay. I thought it was a little lame that the Marshall is “rescued” in one such haze, but when it was revealed he was compromised from the start I softened on it a little. The cutscene where he becomes Faith’s parrot and starts killing the militia in the prison was really good. I felt betrayed. Also I’m bummed that Faith gets exactly one line floating that Joseph is also manipulating her, and it’s right before she dies.
The random arrows to the thigh were stupid, and I thought the hallucination kill house was also stupid, though I began to get the hint and thought the execution of the Manchurian Candidate plot was really solid. Especially since that is the only area that requires the player constantly return to the militia base to get new tasks, so the parallels between the hallucination and the Wolf’s Den become obvious right as it’s too late. Plus, characters remark at the length Rook has been missing when he’s being conditioned. Seriously, a great story moment and cool twist.
The final boss fight was fucking goofy. It has a solid gimmick, though how the fuck did every named character get Blissed like that? It doesn’t make Joseph feel powerful or in control, it’s just contrived. The fight itself would be better if the battle arena was more than 5 square feet. Really stupid trying to revive someone while Joseph appears out of nowhere to kill everyone else. He also has a great line, right at the end, where he’s begging Rook to believe him, and it sounds sincere and desperate. Naturally it lasts one second then he’s back to being a jackass.
Back to the pin:
Joseph and his lieutenants are obtuse just for the sake of being obtuse, in service of keeping the nuclear twist a secret until the end. I could keep complaining, but here are some solutions:
- The Knock at the Cabin method: in the aforementioned film, Leonard et al prepare video material to convince Eric, Andrew, and Wen that the end of the world is, indeed, imminent. Joseph should have done this. “Next time I see you,” he says to Rook, “<thing is going to happen elsewhere in the world> which means apocalypse is coming and I have seen it already” so that Rook has to consider whether it’s a long con lie or truly the start of the end of the world.
- Don’t fucking end the game that way
Moving on to a related diatribe, it absolutely makes no sense that Jacob’s arrest by Rook brings out the start of nuclear war. Did Joseph just know those two unrelated events would take place at the same time? Who knows, but it certainly isn’t the writers of the game. This concept needed to be fleshed out, but honestly this entire story needed to be done in a different game where the core gameplay loop is something other than “explore a huge world however you want with whatever tools you like and slowly liberate it.” Ubisoft also can’t fall back on “there were radio broadcasts that things were going bad in the rest of the world!” because who fucking listens to those (I didn’t hear even one) and, again, why would an intense global geopolitical crisis hinge on A RANDOM ROOKIE SHERIFF’S DEPUTY ARRESTING A CULT LEADER IN MONTANA??
Anyway, it was an okay game, because Far Cry games are pretty consistent in quality of gameplay. I’m glad there was no crafting. I wish there were more weapons. The perk system was good.

The Armada’s masks were confirmed to be based on the Carnival of Venice. When comparing them to real masks, you can really see where the inspirations were pulled from.
My speculations:
Deacon - Bauta Mask
Queen - Colombina Mask (Possibly Moretta Mask underneath?)
Kane - Volto mask
Bishop - Plague Doctor mask
Phule - Pantalone Mask (With Arlecchino Mask-inspired elements)
Rooke - Bauta Mask
(Phule not pictured in here because his inspiration came from different sources, and I am unable to find his type of mask in similar use.)

The Ask Box is officially -open-
//Hello hello! It's me again! Finally after all these years, this blog has an Ask Box. I have decided to do this because it seems really fun qwq. And because I am compelled to learn how to draw the elites better, I hope to improve. Anyways...that is it! I hope this post finds you all in good health, and may the journey to become better at drawing these lads begin! Also I apologize for the formatting, it's horrid, I'm aware. I'm extremely tired, I hope I may be forgiven. Let us Begin!

And Hell Followed With Him
Part 1 of the Series: Hope Is The Thing With Feathers.
Rating: Mature
Summary: Accompanying the Marshal and Hope County Sheriff's Department to arrest Joseph Seed, Deputy Blue Murphy makes a choice and kickstarts the war in Hope County.
Warnings: Obviously Canon-Typical Violence and Joseph Seed being Joseph Seed. Also, there is a reference towards implied child abuse/domestic violence towards the end. Please be careful; it's only in one paragraph. Please let me know if I missed anything else.
Words: 2,826
Ships: A little bit of Joseph/Deputy if you squint.
Author's Note: Hey everyone! For a while, I've wanted to start doing a series on Blue's canon for FC5. This oneshot is the first in that series. I really hope you enjoy this!
AO3 Link
“Mendoza, I really don’t have a good feeling about this arrest. Something just seems off,” Blue said into their phone as they sat outside the Hope County Sheriff’s Department. Hope County had been a cluster fuck from day one, especially with Eden’s Gate adding more fuel to the fire. No one had warned Blue about Eden’s Gate before they moved to Hope County three months ago, and they felt woefully underprepared to deal with an actual cult. To top it all off, tonight of all nights, U.S. Marshal Cameron Burke planned to arrest the leader of said cult, Joseph Seed, with the help of the Sheriff’s Department. Always one to look on the bright side, Blue couldn’t find a good side to this situation. Shit was gonna go sideways tonight.
“I know, Murph. I’ve looked up that Joseph Seed guy, seems like a real piece of work,’ Ranger Gabriel Mendoza, Blue’s former boss and their mentor, continued as Blue snorted in response, ‘Keep your wits about you; you’ve been through worse before. You just have to get through this job for the next two weeks, Murph. Then, you’ll be back at the Ranger Station with us.”
Blue sighed, leaning their head against the steering wheel. He was right; two weeks could go by in a blink of an eye. It’s just…they detested this job with every fiber of their being. Blue wasn’t meant to be a Deputy. That had become painfully clear on the first day, but no one else wanted the fucking job, and Blue was another warm body to fil the spot. Their personal life was even more of a disaster; Blue felt plain lonely in Hope County. No matter how hard they tried to make friends; most folks weren’t willing to Blue a fair shake thanks to Eden’s Gate. It was a lonely and isolating experience. Sitting up, Blue glanced at the clock on their truck’s dashboard. Shit, they needed to head in. “You’re right, Mendoza. I gotta go; I’ll give you a call sometime next week.”
“Good luck, Murph. Stay safe out there.” He said before hanging up. Looking at the station, Blue felt a sense of dread overwhelming them. Maybe, they should run, leave Hope County, and never look back. They shook their head, knowing how cowardly that would be. Blue couldn’t let their teammates down. Opening the door of their truck, Blue hopped out of the truck, closing the door behind them. Locking it, Blue walked towards the station, shoving their hands and phone into their jeans pockets.
“Hey Rook!” Hudson said, patting them on the back.
“Hey, Hudson.” Blue replied nervously. They liked Hudson and admired her toughness.
“You nervous about tonight?”
Blue nodded as the two walked towards the station door. “Yeah, just have a bad feeling about this.”
“We’ll be fine, Rook. Whitehorse won’t let us down.” She said, opening the door.
“I know he won’t.” Blue said. Sheriff Whitehorse was not the person they were worried about.
--
“I will make them see.” Blue closed their eyes as they lost service, sick to their stomach. Behind their eyelids, a vision of Joseph Seed with raised, bloody hands appeared. How could one person be so desensitized to all of this violence? Be so casual about gouging a man’s eyes out? They opened their eyes, slipping their phone into their pocket, still queasy. A part of them was angry, that familiar wrath appearing. What right did Joseph Seed think he had to hurt others so horrifically?
Mendoza’s words replayed in their mind, bringing a small comfort to Blue: “Keep your wits about you; you’ve been through worse before”. As the helicopter continued its winding flight to the Eden’s Gate compound, Blue’s ominous feelings only grew, the sinking feeling in their chest growing worse. “Nervous, Rookie?” Marshal Burke asked, eying Blue with distrust.
“A little bit.” Blue answered, their mouth dry. Blue didn’t trust Marshal Burke, and it seemed that no one else trusted him either. Sheriff Whitehorse had been very clear that he thought Marshal Burke was making a mistake. Marshal Burke shrugged it off, acting like the department was overreacting. Blue thought he seemed like the kind of man who was more concerned with potential glory, never thinking about what might happen in his wake. This was a delicate situation, and Marshal Burke was not a delicate man.
“Don’t freak out on us, Rookie. We don’t need you to whip them up into a frenzy and start shooting at us.” Marshal Burke admonished them.
“We can rely on Deputy Murphy.” Sheriff Whitehorse said, interceding on Blue’s behalf. “Deputy Murphy is a valued member of this department. They haven’t let us down.”
Marshal Burke snorted. “I’ll be the judge of that.” He replied, slightly defensive. Blue shot a small smile at Sheriff Whitehorse before turning to look out the helicopter window. Blue didn’t blame the Marshal for not trusting them; Blue was the new guy on the team. Plus, it didn’t help that there were rumors of Eden’s Gate still having a mole in the Hope County Sheriff’s Department.
Passing by the statue of Joseph Seed, Blue leaned forward to get a better look, their hand coming up to touch the window. The monstrosity of the statue was one of the first things Blue noticed in Hope County. It looked even uglier up close. Blue wondered what kind of man could inspire his followers to build a statue of him, to follow him so fervently. Probably the same kind of monster who casually gouged someone’s eyes out.
As Sheriff Whitehorse called for dispatch, Blue looked away from the window, automatically feeling for the pocketknife in their pocket. The pocketknife belonged to their Grandfather, something he always carried with him and passed on to Blue when he died. He always told Blue that the knife had saved his life, considering the old knife lucky. Bouncing their leg anxiously, Blue thought: I hope this knife brings me luck tonight; I’m going to need it.
The Helicopter circled the Eden’s Gate compound, Blue’s sense of dread worsening. Leave, Leave now. But it was too late. The helicopter descended, landing within the dark compound. Blue certainly felt like they were about to descend into hell. Hopefully, they made it out in one piece.
Pulling off their headset, Blue stepped out of the helicopter, shivering at the wind created by the blades. They fell into step behind the Marshal, Sheriff Whitehorse, and Hudson, bringing up the rear. Blue kept their left hand ready, near their service weapon. Their chest tightened, anxiety threatening to overwhelm them. The Peggies watched the group closely, faces full of fury and fear. If looks could kill, the group would have been reduced to ash. Dogs barked threateningly, jaws snapping loudly. Their skin crawled, resisting the urge to clap their hands over their ears to drown out the noise. The small Church seemed to be an eternity away with every step.
When they finally reached the small Church, Blue could barely hear Sheriff Whitehorse over the fervent singing of the devoted. Fuck, this was a terrible idea. Realizing that Blue must be terrified, Hudson placed a comforting hand on their right shoulder. “You’ll be fine.” Blue could only nod in response; they hoped she was right.
Marshal Burke and Sheriff Whitehorse opened the door to the Church as the singing quieted. “Somethings coming.’ Joseph Seed said, pausing as the doors fully opened, ‘You can feel it, can’t you?” For the first time since arriving in Hope County, Deputy Blue Murphy finally saw Joseph Seed in person. The symbol for Eden’s Gate behind him glowed, bathing him in celestial light. He looked fucking divine, more than human from the back of the Church. His followers were enthralled, hanging onto each and every word like it was fucking air. He radiated a transcendent aura, weighing down on their shoulders. Blue’s heart skipped a beat as they continued forward. They could see why so many believed he was much more than a mere man; he certainly looked like it now.
Sheriff Whitehorse glanced back at Blue, checking on them. They nodded, still following the Sheriff. No matter how ethereal Joseph appeared, Blue was determined to see this through. Peggies parted around the, watching the trio. Their eyes bared into the group, full of only white, hot rage. Many of them clambered to their feet, the air within the Church changing. A storm was coming, heavy and electrifying.
Marshal Burke, unfazed, shoved the arrest in Joseph’s face, reciting the charges. The Peggies spilled in front of Joseph, determined to protect their beloved Father. Blue’s left hand gripped their service weapon, unwilling to use it. As Sheriff Whitehorse tried to deescalate the situation, Joseph descended, peggies moving like they were the Red Sea, and Joseph was fucking Moses. It was fucking terrifying to see the way he calmed them with a handful of words and a loving look.
As the peggies left the Church, Blue finally got a closer look at the rest of the Seed Family. First, their eyes settled on John, the youngest brother. Blue knew he was something of a hotshot lawyer before working for the cult. They wondered what could bring him here to the middle of bumfuck nowhere. His blue eyes watched the trio hawkishly, daring them to make the wrong move. Their eyes moved to Jacob, the eldest brother. Blue knew he had served in a previous war, but Sheriff Whitehorse had little details about his service. Whatever happened had clearly changed him as it would any other person. His eyes seemed to appraise the group, clearly not threatened by any of them. Lastly, they looked at Faith, the only sister of the quartet. No one knew quite where she came from, save for the odd whisper or rumor. Blue found it difficult to look at her; something was off about Faith. She appeared hazy as if she was a mirage.
“Behold it was a white horse.” Joseph paused before finally turning to look at Blue. “And Hell followed with him.” He held his hands out in front of him, waiting for Blue to put the cuffs on. Behind the shades, his startingly blue eyes burned through them, as if he was finally seeing Blue for the first time. They couldn’t read the expression on his face; it was as if he knew something they didn’t. Blue felt like they were the only two people in the room, no one else existed. They were looking into the void, drawing them in with sweet promises of salvation. Perhaps, they could-
“Rookie, cuff this son of a bitch.” Marshal Burke commanded.
Joseph shook his head. “God will not let you take me.”
Staring at Joseph’s offered hands, an internal battle waged within Blue. The group could leave now, and Eden’s Gate would continue their reign of terror. Or Blue could arrest him and finally put an end to all of this madness. Being scared is part of being brave, Blue Jay. Their Grandfather’s voice echoed in their head, and Blue knew what they had to do. Taking a deep breath, Blue grabbed the handcuffs from their belt, determined to arrest him. Stepping forward, Blue placed the handcuffs on his wrists.
“Sometimes, the best thing to do is to walk away.”
--
“Anyone there? Over.” Blue blinked, the world spinning blurrily around them. Their head pounded painfully as the memories leading up to the crash flooded back. Glancing between Marshal Burke and Hudson, Blue realized they were both unconscious. Shit, they were the only one awake. They’ll have to let Nancy know that they need back up and a hell of a lot of back up at that.
“Nancy.” They croaked, pain coursing through them as they stretched towards the headset. Shit, they missed. They reached again. Another miss. Blue reached again, snagging the headset on the third time, dragging it closer to them. Help is within their grasp.
A hand gripped their wrist, firm yet gentle. They jumped, nearly dropping the headset as Joseph swings into view. He is still staring through them, magnetic eyes hidden behind a piss shade pair of aviators. As he finished whistling the last few notes of Amazing Grace, his eyes trail up and down Blue. It’s almost as if he is committing this scene to his memory, committing Blue to memory. A shiver runs over them as Blue glanced towards the headset. If they could just get free…
He squeezed their wrist painfully, Blue releasing the headset with a painful hiss. They shoot him a fierce glare as he lets go of their wrist. Oh, Blue is so going to kick his ass. They are no longer afraid, familiar wrath simmering within Blue. Joseph grabs the collar of their uniform, invading Blue’s space as he pulls himself closer. They tried not to flinch, only drawing back slightly. Yet, Joseph does not let them escape, coming closer. “I told you that God wouldn’t let you take me.”
Nancy called for the group again over the radio. “Nancy!” Blue yelled as the two simultaneously looked at the headset. “Call for help! Call for the National Guard!”
Joseph grabbed the headset, his grip on Blue firm. “Dispatch.” He spoke calmly as if he was a member of Hope County Sheriff’s Department. “Everything is just fine here. No need to call anyone.”
Don’t believe him, Nancy. You have to help us. “Yes, Father. Praise be to you.” Blue’s blood runs cold as they finally realize who the mole is in the Sheriff’s Department. Nancy? One of the few who went out of their way to make Blue feel welcome? Who brought chocolate chip cookies every Wednesday? Fuck. The familiar wrath boiled within Blue. If Blue got out of this alive, they were going to give Nancy a piece of their mind and a whole lot fucking more.
Joseph’s undivided attention settled on Blue again. He pulled in closer to Blue, trapping them against the seat of the helicopter. His breath was warm on their face as he whispered, “No one is coming to save you.”
Blue snapped, hearing those words as a challenge. From an early age, Blue knew they couldn’t always rely on others to save them. When Police, Teachers, Preachers, and other people turned a blind eye at the hell Blue and their mother went through, it was up to Blue to deal with it. And, when that fucking monster decided he’d had enough of Blue and their mother, it had been up to Blue to stop him. And they had; they had done what no one else was willing to do. Fine. If Joseph wanted a fucking fight, he was going to fucking get one. The familiar wrath within them burned red hot. Blue leaned in closer to him, their nose practically touching his. They snarled, “I don’t need anyone to save me. I’ll fucking do it myself.”
The corner of Joseph’s lips twitched upwards in a cold smirk. He pressed his forehead against their forehead, his right hand coming up to cup their face. “Let me save you, my child. You no longer need to rely on yourself. The Father is always willing to help those who are willing to repent.”
Blue rolled their eyes. “No thanks, I’ll take my fucking chances. People like you never mean it when you say you’re gonna save people. You just want the fucking credit for doing jack shit.”
He shook his head in disappointment, not justifying their words with any response. Blue watched him pull himself out of the helicopter, surprisingly gracefully. Beside Blue, Hudson groaned in pain, finally waking up. Across from Blue, Marshal Burke woke up, slightly disoriented as well. They sighed in relief, knowing it would be easier to escape with Hudson and Burke awake.
Unfortunately, things went to hell in a handbasket in a matter of seconds. Blue grabbed onto Hudson’s legs as the peggies started to drag her out of the helicopter. “LET HER GO!” Blue screamed, trying to pull Hudson back into the helicopter. The peggies pulled harder, Hudson slipping out of Blue’s grasp. As they reached out for her, flames exploded starting to devour the helicopter.
Fuck, they need to get the hell out now. Blue wasn’t surprised that the Marshal left them to burn; he seemed like the unreliable type anyway. Fishing their lucky pocketknife out, Blue cut their seatbelt, crashing down onto the roof of the helicopter. They scrambled out, knife still in hand, and into the fresh night air. Throwing one last glance behind them, Blue caught sight of Joseph through the growing fire. He held out his hand, one last offer. “Let me save you, my child.” They could hear him whisper.
Smirking impulsively, Blue flipped him the bird.
Joseph shook his head, pointing right towards Blue, ordering the remaining Peggies to give chase. Blue took off into the night, now determined to win this fight.

May I has moar cherik fic recs please??
damn, y’all are GREEDY for cherik fics .... I, of course, have more, but damn
as usual, in order of shortest to longest
Brandished Steel, Wicked Rook
Words: 1,057
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Charles’ bare skin is awash in flame and darkness as he lies there, hair splayed over his forehead and eyes as black as crow feathers, glistening. His lips are bright and wet and red. And he says, in his red way, “All hail, Macbeth.”
AU in which Erik and Charles are Macbeth and "Lady" Macbeth, respectively.
Inspired by both the original play and the film version of Macbeth (2015) directed by Justin Kurzel.
Opinion: This is a weird one because it’s very short and not something I would usually read - but at the same time, the dynamic and writing style and reference makes it feel like it was written for me specifically. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play by far, and Fassbender is very good in the 2015 film. This fic makes me wish it was 60,000 words. If at some point I actually finish my current WIPs, I might force myself to write a long cherik Macbeth AU, and it would be incredibly self-indulgent, smutty, and morally grey/dark. Because I deserve it.
Spark Me Up
Words: 3,007
Rating: Explicit
Summary: "This is Erik raw. This is Erik lost. This is Erik looking at Charles like he is the only piece of wreckage in a vast ocean. The only star in the sky.
And such a look does things to Charles."
After ten years, they are both starving for each other.
Opinion: This one’s a little different. After years in solitary confinement (taking place in Days of Future Past), Erik is very touch-starved and he and Charles ..... get to touching.
Erik is asexual in this fic and tagged as such, so if asexual characters participating is sexual acts is off-putting to you, maybe give this one a skip.
Never a Place
Words: 3,047
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary: It takes some getting used to. Charles hasn’t seen Erik cheerful, actually cheerful without a homicidal intent of some sort in a very long time—perhaps never.
Or. Charles takes Erik up on his offer while trying to process everything. Erik is remarkably patient until he isn't.
Opinion: Erik and Charles in Genosha post-Dark Phoenix! Very cute!
You, you, you are what I want
Words: 4,803
Rating: Explicit
Summary: "Erik was so sure Charles was interested in him as well that whenever the telepath backed away from him it felt extremely confusing."
Opinion: Got some trans!Charles Xavier and Erik being smitten. Always a good combo.
On a Beach, With You
Words: 6,495
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Charles Xavier meets Erik Lehnsherr on a beach in Israel.
Opinion: Charles and Erik meet, fall in love, and get married in like, 2 weeks. It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s well-written, the smut is good, and you kind of think to yourself “yeah normally getting married after knowing each other for so little time is a bad idea, but damn if I don’t think these two can make it”. Definitely worth a read!
Emissary Requiring Interplanetary Cooperation
Words: 15,584
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Charles is drunkenly wandering home one night when he sees a bright light in a field. To his delight, the cause of the light is a gorgeous alien in the form of a man with the biggest dick he's ever seen.
Opinion: Incredibly fun and cracky smut. Enjoy. I know I did ;)
Made To Be Broken
Words: 18,220
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Charles makes a New Year's Resolution: “No more straight men,” Charles repeated as he began scrolling through the apartment directory for Emma’s name. “No more futility. No more pointless hoping and heartbreak. In 2013, I never want to hear the words ‘exception,’ ‘experimenting’ or ‘phase.’ If, God forbid, I hear ‘bicurious’ even once, I may take a hostage.”
Then he goes into the party, and Erik is there.
Opinion: This is one of those fics you read on a whim one night when you have nothing to do, but keep coming back to weeks after you finish it because it’s so. Damn. Good. Well-written. Shockingly emotional. Smutty. Interesting discussion of relationships and sexuality. I got caught up rereading my favorite parts while making this list. I love this fic and you will too, or else.
A Wedding Planner Walks Into a Bar
Words: 19,451
Rating: Explicit
Summary: When Raven hires Erik to be the bartender at her wedding, he becomes quickly infatuated with the wedding planner, Charles Xavier, who he thinks is her fiancé.
Opinion: This one’s fun. A bit more chill than some of the others. Plus you have the classic idiots-in-love-don’t-realize-it-because-of-a-misunderstanding-that-could-be-easily-solved-but-won’t-be.
We’ll Show Them All
Words: 19,529
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary: Pacific Rim AU. Ten years later, the monsters are back, and newly-instated Marshall Charles Xavier needs to pull a team together to prepare for the coming war. That means finding his talented sister a Drift-compatible copilot -- even if that turns out to be his old flame Erik.
Opinion: This is one of those things that reminds me I need to watch Pacific Rim. It’s good if you haven’t though, and I’m proof of that. Erik and Charles are so angsty here but so in love. Plus, Raven content! Love that for us.
Five Nights In Nuremberg
Words: 26,138
Rating: Explicit
Summary: When Charles escapes from the mutant prison he has been held in for the last two years he knows that he’s going to need help to avoid being recaptured.
What he doesn’t expect is that help will come in the form of a mysterious German man who rescues Charles and takes him to his home; a handsome stranger who, frustratingly, doesn’t speak a single word of English…
Opinion: This one has potentially triggering content in the form of mutant camps and discrimination. Approach with caution. Otherwise, it’s very good.
Appropriate Boundaries
Words: 33,346
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Charles has been having serious problems with back cramps in the year and a half since he's been in a wheelchair. His doctor prescribes massage therapy. But when Charles meets his masseur, Erik, in some ways they begin to heal each other. So how do you cross the boundaries between professional touch -- and the personal?
Opinion: Erik and canon disabled Charles navigating sex and a relationship. It’s cute! It’s hot! It’s fun! It’s well-characterized! It’s emotional! I’m running out of words to describe these fics, I mean I wouldn’t be reccing them if I didn’t think they were good-
April
Words: 56,225
Rating: Explicit
Summary: In the sharp, unforgiving plains of the Canadian Arctic, Erik is since long adapted to solitude and silence. Separated from civilization, dedicated to nothing but his research, he has formed a life that suits him. There is nothing he would ever want to change. So, naturally, the arrival of grad student Charles Xavier upends everything Erik ever thought he wanted, for better or for worse.
Opinion: Charles and Erik basically locked in a shack together with no one else for human contact?????? Internalized issues and homophobia?????? Fluff and angst???????? Yes???????
Thou Shalt Not East Stones
Words: 77,422
Rating: Not Rated
Summary: Two months after Washington, Raven found Erik in a skeevy motel off the Florida interstate.
“They have Charles, Erik,” she said.
The bedframe shrieked. In the bathroom, the showerhead snapped in half and clattered into the tub.
Opinion: This one’s got everything. Humans being dicks. Protective Erik. Hurt Charles, and pissed-off Charles. Trauma recovery. Rebuilding a relationship. Love. Pain. Everything.
That’s all folks! No one ask me for more until at least after New Years, or I swear to Magneto, I will PUNT YOU

★彡( 𝙻𝚘𝚐𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝙾𝚗 )彡★
“Checkmate.”
The young tadpole before him had a stern expression on her face, her bright colored eyes surveying the 16 boards in between them with intense concentration. The boards all lined up four high and four across, pawns, bishops, rooks, and only two knights each in spare spaces across them. Lieutenant Garuru’s queen was taken sometime in the last hour or so, but it was just a small price to pay for this exact moment to call a checkmate. He and the young girl before had left their chairs and now were standing in the middle of the classroom, on each side of the two desks that were pushed together for this game.
Originally, he was asked by one of the military schools to come in and talk to the students about the Keronian forces, which he was more than happy to do. This wasn’t the usual military school that he and his brother had gone to when they were children growing up in the capital Gerosect, this school was different. He was visiting one of the other countries on Keron, outside of Gerosect and near the bottom hemisphere of the planet where the scenery was just miles and miles of tall grass, calm galactic cattle, and maybe once in a while you’d find a small town acting as a spaceport for when supplies came in from larger cities. Lieutenant Garuru was in his father’s birthplace and hometown, Rellou (was it pronounced Ree-lou? Or Reh-lo? The accent is so thick here he can’t even figure out how to say the town’s name) visiting their first and only military school for the local children. In its heyday the school was there to act as a college and primary school for its small population, but when General Guroro of the military rose to fame a lot more people from the ‘surrounding’ villages started to move in and enroll their children to the very same place in hopes that the younger generation could rise to such accomplishments. So when General Guroro heard that his hometown was gaining popularity he funded the schools himself so that it could accommodate all the children coming in.
The military college and school were still connected by the main building with all the classes connected by many hallways, but now had two separate buildings on either side to act as housing for the adult students and the young children. It seemed more like a boarding school for the young ones, in Garuru’s eyes at least; there was housing, three meals a day, an hour for exercise or recess, study hours, and even a curfew. Garuru had just returned from his first ever war as a Corporal when he was invited to Rellou to talk to their students about the military, of course, it was all set up by his father so he couldn’t really decline the offer. But damn was he glad he never threw that opportunity away, he’s met some of the older folks who were teachers at the school and college, all colleagues and old friends of his father’s back when they used to run around in the open fields. He’s met some incredible children, bright, enthusiastic, hungry for learning and he’s met some strong-headed college kids who were eager to make their military proud.
Just like this young girl, Eriri.
She reminded Garuru so much of himself, she was ten, quiet, but her keen eyes always yearned for more knowledge. While he was still walking the halls with a professor who acted as his guide, Garuru watched as Eriri was trying--and struggling--to catch up to her peers on the track for gym. The poor girl was red in the face even though she was bright yellow in color, even when a few of the male classmates passed her and started to taunt her, her eyes were determined to keep going. In the mess hall, Garuru saw that even though she was invited by some of the other girls to sit with them she quietly dismissed herself and instead went to go eat outside, a book in her hand as she left. Just like him when he was at that age.
After Garuru talked the student’s ears off with one of his speeches and answered the dozens of their questions he took his free time during study hall to approach little Eriri to talk to her. That was when he saw the book she was reading--about 4D chess players. He asked her if she knew how to play, Eriri did, answering promptly ‘yes sir’ and even nodding her head politely when he asked if she’d like to play a round. They pushed two desks together and brought the boards to play.
Though a game usually would be over in about an hour whenever he usually played, this one, in particular, was going on three. Garuru was very impressed, he’s played thousands of 4D chess matches with all forms of life but this one round had to take the cake. He’s made soldiers, professors, generals, Lieutenants, politicians, and diplomats all turn with shame or defeat at one of his ‘signature’ moves, but here before him was a little girl wearing a simple unmarked uniform, pigtails, and no shoes or socks. She was circling their board with determination in her eyes and a hunger to take him down. The rest of the class was watching as well, at first uninterested but after two hours had passed and fifth period was being interrupted by their game there was students--college age and primary--as well as teachers grouped up on top of desk faces and sitting against the walls to see how this was all going to end.
When Garuru had claimed ‘checkmate’ the room fell into a gasp, students whispering to one another feverishly before their teachers and professors all hissed at them to quiet down to not distract the players. Eriri slowly made her way around the two desks, peering in between one level of the chessboard before moving to Garuru’s side to look at where his King still stood, untouched, then moved back to her side. That was when Garuru saw it.
A smile.
Eriri took one of her Knights from the third tier, just a step away from where the Lieutenant stood and then she knocked over his Bishop that threatened one of her pawns and defended his King, taking her new kill.
“Checkmate, Lieutenant.”
Garuru blinked back silently, tilting his head coolly to the side to peer in between boards two and three, then lifting his chin up just enough to look back at cross-boards B and C to his other pieces. His Rook on board A was too far away to cross vertically and too high up to make the move horizontally to cover his King. His knights all were cornered. And when he peeked down he still had three pawns remaining, but they were on board B tier 3.
A small smile came to his face, his shoulders bouncing just a little when he started to chuckle and then finally laugh boisterously when the room continued to watch in sheer and complete awe. Eriri was still smiling when Garuru’s laughs had stopped, nodding his head to signal to her that he was indeed in a tight space. He had no more moves left, he lost all his defense, he had lost. The young tadpole nearly vibrates with excitement as she takes her pawn and knocks over the white iridescent King piece to signal her win, the room abrupting with cheers and hollering. It was just like a scene from a movie--laughably--with students of all ages running up to Eriri to hug her, pat her on the shoulders, and congratulate her on winning the game. The teachers boasting to one another stating ‘they’ knew she was going to win, and the professors all making remarks of ‘she’s going to lead a fleet one day!’. It truly was a sight to behold.
“That was a great game, Eriri-chan.” Garuru states with a small grin, the little tadpole bowing politely to him with a quick and prompt ‘thank you, sir’. “Tell me, have you planned out exactly what you wanted to do once you graduate school?”
“I plan on joining the tactical division for the Keronian military! U-Uh, sir!” she states proudly, standing up straighter than before with both arms tightly at her sides. “I want to expand Keron’s defense lines, and traverse the galaxy to make allies for our militias!” Garuru couldn’t help but laugh a little more, not because of her dreams, but because of the way that she was answering so loudly, so proudly, it really was like looking into the past. Different goals, of course, but man, there was something so refreshing about seeing a child that he could definitely relate to.
“That’s a very ambitious goal, kiddo.” Garuru says; he was standing at ease the whole time that they were playing chess but now that he was addressing her he finally told himself to let his hands behind his back go and relax. Gesturing to Eriri a high five, she was looking relieved when she saw his hand and gave him a little tap with her hand. “Oh c’mon, you can do better than that. I expected much more from a 4D chess winner and our future tactical officer--!”
CRACK! Their hands slapped so hard Garuru couldn’t help but rumble with laughter again, his hand barely stinging from the collision but both he and little Eriri waved their hands from the miniature sonic boom.
“Excellent! That’s what I’m talking about! I look forward to seeing your accomplishments in the future, young lady.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant, sir!” Eriri proudly shouts. Garuru gives her a firm pat to her shoulder and dismisses her so she could run to her classmates and receive a more open congratulations from them. It was quite something, today she was just a little girl who loves to study and play chess, tomorrow--who knows? A field marshal? A tactical officer? All he knows is that the kid got something special in her.
