James Lovegrove’s Sherlock Holmes books
James Lovegrove has written a ton of Sherlock Holmes books over the years (all Victorian era/canon era). I recently came across his latest series on the Hoopla app while I was browsing audiobooks that were available and the cover art totally roped me in. I ended up reading all three books in the newest series, all the Cthulu casebooks and a few in his earliest series. As far as I can tell, his books seem to be split into three different series based on the structure of the subtitles and the different cover art. I enjoyed all the books I read by Lovegrove for different reasons, but as I've already established in my other book rec posts, I mostly only care about the Holmes/Watson dynamic. So listed below are Lovegrove's Sherlock series in chronological order, which also happens to be, in my opinion, the order from least to best Holmes & Watson dynamics •ᴗ•

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Titan Books Series, 2013-2018
I honestly just realized while researching links for this post that Lovegrove's books in this series are part of a bigger series with multiple authors (lol me), so I'm not going to list all the titles here, but they've been published from 2011-2023 and Lovegrove has written six of the 21 books. The other authors in the series are Guy Adams, George Mann, Cavan Scott, Mark A. Latham, Nick Kyme, Philip Purser-Hallard, and Tim Major. I read the first two Lovegrove books in this series last after reading his other SH series and the stories were pretty solid. One of them was a WWI-era story, which is a time period that I love to read about. The only thing I will say is that the Holmes & Watson vibe is a little too I'm-smarter-than-you-do-keep-up for my taste, which is why I took a break after reading the first two. But I wouldn't be against dipping back into this series at some point in the future and also checking out what the other authors have to offer.

The Cthulu Casebooks, 2016-2023
There are four books in the Cthulu Casebooks series and the framing device is that James Lovegrove himself is a descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, which is how he comes into possession of Watson's secret writings on his and Sherlock's real adventures going up against Cthulu and other eldritch horrors. These books are not just a romp through a mashup of literary worlds, there are very real stakes and things get dark. I really liked these books, I'm not really a Lovecraft fan at all, but I have read some of his works and of course I'm aware of all the elements from his works that have transcended their stories and are really a part of general fantasy/horror fan knowledge. My best friend is a huge Lovecraft fan and we read these together, so they were able to tell me how precise the Lovecraftian elements were -- they were precise -- so Lovecraft fan approved. The framing device was my favorite thing, especially the author's note at the end of book three, which was a very bone-chilling way to end the book (that I was listening to on audio in my dark house at night -- oops).

James Lovegrove's Sherlock Holmes, 2019-2021
This was my favorite series out of the Lovegrove set and also the first that I read. I felt like the Holmes & Watson dynamic was especially great -- and for me that means: they felt more like equals, there was just the right amount of bickering, and they cared deeply about each other. While I was reading these I took some short notes to help me remember what was special about each book, here they are below next to the titles. I would say that the covers and titles make the series seem like it might have fantasy elements, but it's more like they are debunking their clients outlandish theories before getting stuck in on the actual case.
Sherlock Holmes & the Christmas Demon (has a Three Garridebs-esque scene; Holmes dresses up as Santa!)
Sherlock Holmes & The Beast of the Stapletons (a continuation of HOUN complete with a short estrangement of Holmes & Watson)

#this is vee speaking#was vibing to just do it at work last night#and as that violin hit my soul yet again lmao i thought ‘hey maybe otome knows how to play the violin!!!! just like dice!!!!’#which kinda made me a little sad lol#i operate under the impression that dice ran away from home because he didn’t like what he was being moulded into by his family#and that was basically whatever they wanted otome to be before she became a political leader#so both can play violin for the exact same reasons and rejected it for the same reasons too#and that hurt a little lol#and i got sad thinking that otome didn’t leave dice behind just to be used the way she was but that’s nearly what happened had dice stayed#otome has made so many bad decisions to get where she wanted to be#and it sucks to see how much of this started because she wanted to protect dice and how she’s thrown or buried even that away 😭😭😭#she’s embraced the part of herself that doesn’t care because she’s on top of the world#but you do see moments where she’s sad about when she talks about dice#so i hope she’s okay and having fun despite everything lol#c: otome

ohohoho boy update. today at work it was just us doing cheese while everyone else pulled an ice cream order, and i was like hey if youre not busy saturday would you want to roadtrip with me? and i fully expected him to say no, but we are roadtripping to nebraska on saturday <3 <3 anyway what playlist do i put on in the car. do we trust him enough for get loose get looser

#its nothing tumblr related really its more just irl#a mix of being tired and having deadlines and not being able to make myself work#and the. kinda harsh switch in vibe in the house from last nights everyone hanging out having fun#to todays me alone cleaning up after everyone and knowing that the others are content doing their own thing and don't wanna hang w me#which like!! is fine im not expecting to be the center of their world its just.#idk we used to hang out every night watching a movie or some tv and laughing#and ever since i got back from my trip we just. we spend time together maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks and it takes me asking if they wanna#hang out like 3000 times before it ever happens and when it does there's just. theres a disconnect#and I think they just realized during the two months i was away that theyre. maybe a bit happier without me#or at least they find it easier to not hang out#like theyve got jobs now so obviously they dont have time the way they used to but its not just that theres been a Shift#i think they also might. kinda resent me for the trip and having that opportunity#which sucks bc i cant. do anything ab that i had no say in the trip i didnt want to go#and even saying that makes me very. like that feels like such a selfish arrogant thing to say to want to turn down a trip across the world#but everyone who was here during that trip knows that i spent the entire time dissociating and getting yelled at and suicidal so uh#i dont think its selfish to not have wanted to go when i Knew it'd end like that but i think they might think it was#ANYWAY this got depressing and sad i dont mean to bring shit here its just i literally only have 3 friends and 2 of them r these ones#and the other is so emotionally unavailable and doesnt really take mental health seriously so#ooc.#negative cw

very grateful for my independence today + every day
#came out to my parents last night and it didn't go super great but afterwards i just went home and vibed#and i worked very hard to be able to do that... to go home to my own apartment that i pay for#i think if you grow up in a restrictive home environment you can come out of it with a very powerful desire for autonomy. i remember having#that at a young age because i saw no other way to live if it wasn't the way i wanted#and now im here and happy and still free. so it feels very nice#also while im still humblebragging ummm i got a raise today at work hehe#ennisposting

I accidentally came into work early, whoops, not my fault tho because my boss refuses to make my schedule normal. He used to have me work 6am-4pm on Sundays, which is a nightmare but whatever. But I checked my schedule today and realized I was scheduled to come in at 7am. I could've had an extra hour of sleep. I could've. But it means I get to go home an hour earlier than I thought!
But. I haven't done anything today. Not a thing. Sunday is our slowest day, there have been less than ten customers in the two hours I've been here so I've just been on my phone. I did Duolingo for a bit, now I'm on Tumblr. I'm getting paid to learn Spanish and waste my life on social media. This is delightful.
