I love the stepmother as a character because her life was never her own, it wasn't even for her, it was for someone else – so she took back control and made it about her, ripping some out of stories, putting others back in, taking back control. She was good enough to teach someone else a lesson but it was at her own expense, and no one cared to give her a name – so she erased herself out of the story, gave them no trace, no name, no face, just a silhouette to be feared. They stamped her as "evil" and she took all of that and gave it back tenfold. The world hated her so she devoured it.

Rowan is such a funny person to get Quangled into Neverafter because there's no shock factor for her. The weirdness, the gore, the magical peril--very run of the mill fae stuff. It's all, "Yeah, yeah, the time knife we've all seen it" vibes. But she's still EXTREMELY annoyed by all of it so the vibe is less Shock And Horror and more Stuck At Thanksgiving Dinner With Your Annoying Relatives In The Small Town You Grew Up In And Left As Soon As You Could. I love it.

the sheer amount of chaos and insanity the baba yaga brings to the table is truly unparalleled, she just gives a bunch of weird strangers a lift to the final battle scene, takes one look at both parties there, and then immediately goes, "I'm gonna fuck everybody up, you're all dying tonight, who's first?"
