Characters and Berries in The Hunger Games
Gale -> Blackberries
He plucks a few blackberries from the bushes around us. “And may the odds —” He tosses a berry in a high arc toward me.
In folklore blackberries are associated with bad omens. They can also symbolize haste and remorse. There’s a 1966 poem Blackberry-Picking by Seamus Heaney about growing up and loss of innocence.
Madge -> Strawberries
When we finish our business at the market, we go to the back door of the mayor’s house to sell half the strawberries, knowing he has a particular fondness for them and can afford our price. The mayor’s daughter, Madge, opens the door.
Strawberries often symbolize purity, passion (fuel for Gadge and Kadge shippers), and healing (Madge delivers the Morphling after Gale’s whipping).
Rue -> Unfamiliar Berries
I roll an unfamiliar berry in my fingers. “You sure this is safe?”
“Oh, yes, we have them back home. I’ve been eating them for days,” she says, popping a handful in her mouth. I tentatively bite into one, and it’s as good as our blackberries. Taking Rue on as an ally seems a better choice all the time.
These berries are never identified, so bear with me here…
We know Peeta mistakes nightlock (also not identified) for Rue’s berries, but that nightlock is toxic and Rue’s are edible. We also know Nightlock berries are dark (the dark berries glisten in the sun) and Rue’s berries are round (I roll an unfamiliar berry in my fingers), so two potential options are Elderberry or Blackcurrant.
In pagan traditions Elderberries are associated with Faerie realms - (fitting for the magical wisp of a girl who wore wings to her interview.) They heal; and are associated with breaking curses (Rue’s death has forced me to confront my own fury against the cruelty, the injustice they inflict upon us.)
Despite health benefits, in the middle ages Elderberries began to be associated with grief and sorrow.
Blackcurrants are often associated with protection (Here it’s safe, here it’s warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm)
They are also associated with gathering courage, specifically before going on a solitary journey.
Blackberries (bad omens) are referenced in the description of the taste of Rue’s berries.
Regardless of the berry, they also reinforce Katniss’s decision to take Rue on as an ally (Taking Rue on as an ally seems a better choice all the time.)
Peeta - Nightlock
My father’s voice comes back to me. “Not these, Katniss. Never these. They’re nightlock. You’ll be dead before they reach your stomach.”
Nightlock is likely based on two real ones: Nightshade and Hemlock.
Unsurprisingly, toxic Hemlock often has negative associations, however it is also associated with Socrates. Socrates was convicted of impiety, but refused to renounce his beliefs; Hemlock was his chosen method of death which could be viewed as either rebellious and/or a noble sacrifice. “Scholars surmise that Socrates conceived of his death as a freedom of his soul from the unreasonableness of humanity and the confines of his body.”
Nightshade has been suggested as the poison used in Romeo and Juliet (fitting for the star-crossed-lovers) and Macbeth (poisoning that lead to a civil war)

Hello - sorry to bother you! I’ve seen a lot of your posts about leftist antisemitism and then the associated hate anons.
I am positively horrified by the way young people—my generation (Gen Z, though I’m a cusper) in particular—are becoming quite literally violently antisemitic over a definition of Zionism they completely made up.
I studied radicalisation and extremism at university, and even still I’m simply at a loss for words.
While I am certainly on the left of the political spectrum, the term ‘leftist’ has left such a bad taste in my mouth since the 7th of Oct. I don’t feel comfortable identifying as such anymore.
Sorry about this being disjointed and a bit rambley. I just wanted to offer my support and commiserations. Kinda just scared of what the world is becoming.
No bother! Thanks for sending this my way. And it doesn't feel disjointed, but even if it did that's okay. It's a scary time for Jews. We're watching people we called allies turn their backs on us. I had an older Jewish woman tell me the other day, "We fought with them for civil rights, we fought with them for gay rights, we fought with them for women's rights. Where are they now when we need them to fight with us?" It was heartbreaking because she's right. I think David Baddiel had a point when he said "Jews don't count" to leftists. It's disappointing. It's disturbing. I wish I knew how to fix it. I don't. There's a reason antisemtism is called the oldest hatred. It's persisted for disturbingly long. I think all we can really do is continue to fight disinformation and hatred with education and empathy. There's a reason Jews say Am Yisrael Chai. We live. We persist. We have outlived all of our enemies. And we will outlive this.

Condemned, Pt. 9
While the gang are trying to retake the jumper on the island, we get to see a scene between the Olesian Magistrate and the wraith that had just flown into the city in the dart that came through the stargate. On the face of it, this is just to give us insight into the internal workings of the wraith and the kind of deal this one particular wraith had with the civilization on this planet that allowed it to become technologically advanced where most other societies were held back by the cullings. They seem to be friends with benefits of a kind, to have a relationship that benefits the both of them and hence is worth sustaining for both parties.
But this scene is also giving us insight into Sheppard and McKay's relationship if we see them as narrative mirrors for our mains, the Magistrate for McKay and the wraith for Sheppard. We just heard McKay tell Sheppard that he would need two days but can do in ten minutes something that will benefit them all, but ten minutes turns out to be much too little time and McKay is running late. The Magistrate seems likewise to be running late for his rendezvous.
Magistrate: I apologise for my tardiness. I had an urgent matter to attend to, a matter which could ultimately benefit us both. Wraith: In that case... apology accepted. Exceptional as always. I think this is my favourite vintage yet. Magistrate: I hope you find the food acceptable as well. My new chef is quite accomplished. Wraith: I certainly hope so. Your previous chef unfortunately proved to be far more appetising than the meals he prepared. Magistrate: I must admit, I still find it intriguing to watch you eat actual food. Wraith: Our lineage may have diverged, but there are those of us who still retain an appreciation for finer things. And although it may provide a moment's pleasure, it does not sustain me. This arrangement I have made with you and your predecessors has served both of us well. While others of my kind have been forced to sleep between cullings, I have enjoyed a steady stream of humans for my consumption, and the taste of their defiance is sweet. You, in return, have been allowed to live in peace. Magistrate: We thank you for that. Wraith: But, throughout the galaxy, hives continue to wake in far greater numbers than are sustainable, and with a hunger that is most pressing. Magistrate: I assure you that I have put measures in place to augment the population of the island. Wraith: Then why is it there are even fewer inhabits on the island? Others of my kind would have destroyed your entire planet. But I am more civilised than that. Magistrate: I thank you for your generosity. Wraith: Still, there are interests which must be served. There are many wraith who hunger and I have promised to provide for them. The decision you are now faced with is: on whom shall we feed? Magistrate: Your needs shall be met. You have my promise. Wraith: Good. I would hate to see anything happen to you. I do so enjoy our dinners together.
Obviously, this is not dialogue straight from the dinner table of Sheppard and McKay, so is it a stretch to see them as narrative mirrors? Let me point out the fact that Sheppard and McKay have a whole conversation about sandwiches, McKay asking Sheppard sardonically if he would like one and Sheppard telling him to get started on the sandwiches as soon as he gets back to Atlantis. They are exaggerated versions of McKay and Sheppard, the Magistrate plump and weasely, the wraith gaunt and with messy overlong hair. McKay and the Magistrate offer the other food. There are enough points of connection to speculate on their uses as narrative devices in this episode, and what their interaction here might reveal to us about things that must have happened between Sheppard and McKay but which could never be maintexted.
Now, the thing that gives Sheppard a moment's pleasure but does not sustain is not food but that something which seems to have happened in Sheppard's quarters between the previous episode and this, what ever arrangement the two of them have had since ending their relationship. It's physical, it offers both of them release, but it is a far cry to what they had before, when both of them had discovered what making love was like with the other for the first time in their lives. What ever they had now could give them a moment's pleasure but it did not sustain, and it actually hurt more in the long run. Knowing what they once had and having watched it turn into what ever they had now, a pale echo of the real thing, it was killing them both. By continuing to 'hook up,' they were not just using each other, they were literally sucking the life out of each other.
There is also an echo of Sheppard introducing Ronon to the team here, making McKay feel threatened that he might be losing his place both on the team and in Sheppard's life. Ronon is a very attractive man indeed, young and strapping, and McKay does not even begin to guess at the reasons that Sheppard had actually brought him in for. For McKay, Ronon seemed like Sheppard's really really ridiculously good-looking new boytoy, and McKay wasn't even the only one who thought that. Sheppard's whole family thought that. His ex-wife thought that. Everyone who really knew Sheppard thought that. For McKay, Ronon was a threat that if he cut Sheppard off from what ever arrangement they had, he would look for it elsewhere. He had options, and where he had been content being alone after isolating himself on the Antarctic, he now had desires that needed to be satiated. It was up to McKay to decide to whom he should turn to with them, as far as he understood it. In his wildest dreams McKay could not have imagined that he himself was the reason why Sheppard had sought out Ronon, to safeguard his life.
Now, there is a scene at the beginning of Search and Rescue (S05E01) where we find Sheppard dreaming or hallucinating as he is dying, pierced by a metal rod and having had a building fall on top of him. He is dying himself and he believes that his actions, the fact that he had come back and changed history, had lead to McKay dying. The fact that he had returned from the future had changed the timeline so that instead of living a full and happy life (this is how Sheppard interpreted it), McKay had just died well beyond his time, and it was his fault. He was directly responsible for that. He had only hours ago returned from a future where the echo of the love of his life had told him how he had lived a lifetime without him and eventually died as an old man, and the first thing he had done after everything McKay had done to get him back to his own time from a dying planet was to get him killed. Getting McKay killed had been his worst nightmare for years by then, and he was so terrified of it happening that he had done the hardest thing he had ever had to do, which was to give McKay up. As long as they were not together, there was less of a chance for him to get McKay killed, or so he had told himself. And now, he had done it anyway.
This is the context in which Sheppard has a dream in which we see him enjoying dinner and wine in candlelight with Teyla. The scene has an off, dream-like quality to it and by this time, we have seen several dream sequences in which reality has been slightly altered. Somewhere in Sheppard's subconscious, they have the following discussion:
Sheppard: This is perfect. Just what I needed. Teyla: Truly has been a hectic several weeks. Sheppard: Try four years. Teyla: Very true. In a way, it makes these calmer moments even more special. I cherish these times when it is just you and me. Sheppard: Me too. You... you've got an early morning. Teyla: I never got to properly thank you. Sheppard: For what? Teyla: For what?! For rescuing me. From Michael. I never gave up hope because I knew. I knew that you would come for me, John. Sheppard: I know this sounds crazy but... I don't remember... rescuing you. Ford: You don't remember rescuing her because you didn't. Just like you never rescued me.
In reality, Teyla is being held captive by Michael. Ford had perished at the hands of the wraith. Sheppard felt responsible for what had befallen them. But you notice that there is a glaring absence here. The person that his subconscious mind knew that he had just gotten killed and whose death he couldn't even begin to deal with, who had never lost hope because he knew 40 000 years into the future that Sheppard would save them all, is not featured in this scene. And this is not a memory, as such. This is not something that had happened--not with Sheppard and Teyla. At the end of the episode, we find Sheppard and Teyla alone together in the med bay, and things are very different between them. Sheppard does not appear to enjoy his time alone with Teyla particularly. He occupies himself with playing a game rather than having a conversation with her. Clearly, he would have rather been alone just then. What they say here is not true, not for either of them. And it is not what Sheppard wishes were true either, not with Teyla. That is not what the dream is about.
Toward the end of the previous season, there was a very interesting episode in the form of Harmony (S04E14). In it, we find McKay and Sheppard enjoying glasses of wine with some local women. They have the following exchange:
Flora: Truly, the medical supplies you have given to us over the past several years have made an immeasurable difference to our people. Mardola: Not to mention your warning last harvest that the wraith were nearby. You saved many lives. Sheppard: Well, uh, you know. McKay: My favourite missions are when we come here to do our trading, and I've said that, I can prove it. I'm not just saying that. Sheppard: You don't need to prove it. Uh, you know, actually, we've gotta get going.
The reason we find Sheppard and McKay alone on this mission is that there is an Ancient defensive devise on the planet that ignores people with the Ancient gene, and the plot could not have happened with Ronon and Teyla there. But this also suggests that coming to this planet was something Sheppard and McKay tended to do together just the two of them, and McKay says that they are some of his favourite missions. Like Teyla told Sheppard in his dream, McKay has cherished these times when it is just him and Sheppard. While they are having wine. Approximately four years into their live on Pegasus. There is an echo of this in Sheppard's dream in Search and Rescue.
In Doppelganger (S04E04), Teyla confirms that she and Sheppard had never hooked up. That was not a thing that they ever did. Sheppard's dream is not based on his memory of something that had happened with Teyla, and it is not based on his fantasy of what he wished had happened with Teyla either. They had been on a mission to rescue Teyla because in the timeline in which Sheppard had gone missing, everything had started going wrong after the birth of Teyla's child. But instead of saving Teyla as instructed by the hologram of his former lover, Sheppard had now gotten McKay killed. And as, crushed by a whole-ass building, he was both in physical and mental pain the likes of which his nervous system simply could not handle, that had overwhelmed him to the point of losing consciousness, it seems as though Sheppard's brain had conflated these things. It helped him regain consciousness by changing McKay into Teyla as thinking about McKay and having his body feel the anguish of losing him right then, his internal organs pierced by a pole, would probably have killed him.
This is a memory of a time Sheppard had spent with McKay where his brain had replaced McKay with Teyla because he could not deal with the reality of his situation. The end of the episode clearly tells us that this is not the reality of his relationship with Teyla. And the way we only see him come back to life after he learns that McKay had survived (again, remarkably, with barely a scratch on him, connecting the episode with this one), confirms the fact that McKay is the most important thing to him. Is his reason for living. Is the one he has spent time alone with that they both cherished. Is the one that he has had to remind about early mornings because they used to sleep together.
Search and Rescue is again giving us information after the fact to recontextualize something that happened earlier. We never got to see Sheppard have dinner and wine with McKay. But by having his brain replace McKay with Teyla, we get to see what it had been like. And having their narrative mirrors dine here together as Sheppard tells McKay to prepare them sandwiches when they return to Atlantis, tells us that such dinners were something that they had enjoyed together. Between Sanctuary (S01E14), where Sheppard knew what foodstuffs going missing would upset McKay, and this episode, Sheppard and McKay had been enjoying dinners together, just the two of them. Not every night (the beginning of The Intruder and Duet show us clear times when they did not have dinner together), but frequently. Based on the mystery sandwich someone had made for McKay in Letters from Pegasus (S01E17), it was important for Sheppard to make sure that McKay ate. So, this is a thing that happened.
In Search and Rescue, Sheppard's mind recalled one of his best, most soothing memories in order to save his life, as the sudden understanding that he had killed McKay would have caused a sharp intake of breath expanding his lungs, would have caused his heart to beat rapidly making him bleed out that much sooner. Using his most soothing memory but replacing the one thing that would have made him instantly remember the truth with having actually succeeded in the mission that had failed so spectacularly, his brain was trying to spare him. So what we get to see was Sheppard's most cherished memory, only in reality it had happened with McKay and not Teyla. But when had it taken place? We get two indicators of time, four years and 'several weeks'. Their time on Harmony's planet had been four years into their time in Pegasus, but between Letters from Pegasus and The Gift, it had been two weeks since they had learned about the imminent attack of the wraith. It is also possible that it took place between The Gift and The Siege (S01E19) with Teyla in the hospital, so it would have been just the two of them, and McKay having an early morning for his presentation at the beginning of the latter episode.
During Letters from Pegasus, which is connected to this episode and the perversion of the dinner they had then by the mention of sandwiches (and Sheppard having made McKay a sandwich would naturally lead to conversation over eating real food for a change while sipping glasses of Athosian wine), Sheppard had just spent an almost entire night alone with Teyla and he had not enjoyed that time alone with her at all, also allowing for the conflation of the memories. This is also around the time that Sheppard had finally learned what making love felt like, and the fact that he had been able to unburden his guilt by recording the message to Col. Sumner's family may have contributed to this, may have given him the freedom to let go and give himself fully to McKay. Given McKay's musing about having found a home in these people, a friendly face waiting for him to come home, and Sheppard finally releasing some of his guilt, they both would have been in the state of mind for something like that to happen just then, the desperation of their situation increasing the feeling of fatedness of their encounters. So between Letters from Pegasus and The Siege, they had dinner just the two of them, they had some Athosian wine, they made love changing Sheppard's life forever, and this was the memory his brain conjured up as he was dying and the perversion of which we see playing out here between the Magistrate and the wraith. Because what ever they had then, they are not that anymore. The events that followed, the pain that they both went through, it has become corrupted by this time.
But where for Sheppard and McKay things may have led to another following such dinners, the wraith leaves the city just as soon as it had arrived, and we find the team inside the jumper where Sheppard is engaged in his favourite occupation: watching McKay work. Dirty, grimy, sweaty and buried half inside the guts of Ancient technology, Sheppard is looking down at one of the hottest things he has ever seen.
Dex: The dart went back through the gate. Teyla: I do not know why it did not cull anyone. Dex: Maybe it did. It headed to the mainland when it first came through. Sheppard: Alright, keep watch.
When Ronon enters from his vigil outside, it seems like Teyla has her back to the others and is holding what looks like a flashlight as a makeshift weapon, probably having been keeping an eye on door. But Sheppard and Eldon both seem to be transfixed by McKay, Eldon having positioned himself at McKay's feet to be able to see what he's doing inside the jumper's dashboard and Sheppard with his head bent down, watching McKay from above. Neither of them are doing anything useful, they are merely observing. Now, Eldon may have a professional interest, he may have a desire to learn about the technology and what McKay is doing. Sheppard, however, who probably could have been using his time more productively looking out of the window for potential hostiles, has no excuse. He just enjoys watching McKay work, pure and simple. We even see his head snap up as Ronon enters, as though he had just been caught doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing. And just as soon as he tells Ronon to keep watch, he returns to his own vigil, his eyes returning to McKay as though by concentrating hard enough, looking at him intensely enough he might be able to help McKay get there faster.
But as much as Sheppard enjoys watching McKay work, there is a limit to how long he can stand to be without his attention. He needs McKay's attention. He knows that by engaging McKay he is not helping, he can't make McKay do this any faster by nagging him. He knows that he is just distracting him, he knows McKay is doing the best that he can, is working as fast as humanly possible. He knows all of this. And even so, even so, he needs McKay to acknowledge him. To pay attention to him. To look at him. To express his awareness of his presence.
Sheppard: How's it coming, Rodney? McKay: Slower than I expected, but faster than humanly possible. Sheppard: Any chance of getting the cloaking generator powered up too? Could really come in handy right about now.
McKay stops what he is doing for long enough to look at Sheppard from beneath the dashboard, and his look is intense. He is concentrating on what he is doing, and as he briefly shifts his concentration from Ancient technology to the man that has an established neural link to the machine he is fiddling with, he looks at Sheppard with the same focus. He is annoyed at the interruption, yes, but the look he gives Sheppard is also pretty erotic. You can hear it in Sheppard's voice that this has an effect on him. He sounds like he's suddenly out of breath, and it does not seem as though he has been exerting himself physically just then. This may not be the first time that McKay has given him that look, not even the first time he has given him that look from that vantage point.
You can hear Sheppard's voice almost trembling here as he turns to look away from the window, as though he's so afraid of the prisoners returning now that the wraith is gone that he can't keep the fear out of his voice, and that's not even a little bit what he is feeling there. Sure, he is concerned, he is aware of their time running out, he is worried for the safety of his team. All that. But we have seen him in much tighter spots than this and his voice has never sounded like it does here. We have seen him ride a nuke several times, we have seen him drifting helplessly into space, we have seen him watch a wraith armada take a ballistic approach at everything he loves and he never sounded like this. This is not his please hurry up, we're about to die voice. This is John Sheppard turned on voice. Sheppard is aroused. He has to force himself to look out of the window, to look away from McKay down on the floor, McKay's lower body turned toward Sheppard where he lies on his back.
Sheppard is very likely not even seeing anything as he looks outside, is unable to focus on anything. But he tries to distract himself because one, this is not the time. Two, this is not the place. Three, they are not alone. And four, he's not sure he is even allowed to look at him like that anymore. But damn, that hitch in his voice. Sheppard has it bad for this man. Also, Sheppard thinking about sex in a highly charged and potentially dangerous situation is entirely on brand for him, we have seen and will continue to see him do this when ever things get tense. It may be that interplay of Eros and Thanatos, the drive to mate and the death drive, that is at the root of his habit of focusing on the 'wrong' thing in these situations but he definitely does do it.
It is possible that McKay recognizes Sheppard's cadence but he is focused enough on what he is doing that he fails to grasp the implications. But while the vast majority of his brain seems to be working on the problem, he still stops what he is doing long enough to give Sheppard the attention that he seeks, he cannot help himself from engaging. He enjoys having Sheppard there, talking his ear off, helping him release some of the tension building in him from the pressure of having to succeed just as much as Sheppard enjoys watching him. He actually sits up and looks at Sheppard, gives him his entire focus for a moment.
McKay: OK, and how about a snack? Maybe you'd like me to make you a nice sandwich? Sheppard: Only if it's humanly possible. McKay: It will be a miracle if I can get the DHD back online, let alone the cloaking generator, and even if I can manage that, the power will be intermittent at best.
Now, from the outside this might look like bickering. Like they are just saying things to each other to get under the other's skin. They have been saying some borderline hurtful things to each other for a while now, and even crossed over that border on a few occasions. But here, Sheppard is actually trying to relieve the pressure he knows McKay feels with having everything riding on him succeeding, and McKay is taking the time to explain things the way he knows that Sheppard likes, the way he knows Sheppard wants him to explain them to him. Their interaction here witnesses to just how well they do know each other. And it is fascinating, now that McKay is deep within the guts of the jumper, that he thinks to offer to make Sheppard a sandwich when one of the first commands Sheppard ever gave the jumper was to get him a turkey sandwich which the jumper was unable to deliver to him. Ancient technology is borderline magic, it works in mysterious ways. It's not impossible for McKay's sudden desire to deliver Sheppard a sandwich to come from the jumper itself. It does strive to fulfill all of his desires.
Sheppard: OK, well, FYI, the wraith have all gone, so it's just a matter of time before Torrell and his boys return, with all of our weapons. McKay: I get it! Sheppard: Good!
Teyla seems to be watching what ever this is from the sidelines and she clearly does not know how she is meant to understand this. There is no one that has been able to observe Sheppard and McKay around each other more than she has, and it is difficult to tell how much she knows or might suspect about them. We do need to remember that one of the first things Teyla witnessed when they first met was Sheppard's interest in the young Athosian man in her company. Sheppard's interest in men cannot be a secret to her. But at the same time, they have never explicitly discussed it and Sheppard has been trying to keep his personal life private.
However, it seems to be spilling beyond the confines of their private universe now, the urgency of the situation not leaving them enough bandwidth to uphold the masquerade. There is a strange man observing them very keenly as they are engaged in this, and it barely seems to be a deterrent. We saw at the beginning of the episode that Sheppard seemed to feel more relaxed with his own team as he was far away from the eyes of anyone in the Earth military here on this planet and here the two of them seem to be on the verge of entirely forgetting that no one is supposed to know that they are what ever this is. That they know each other this well, that their rapport is this intimate. That despite what ever hurt feelings they have between them, Sheppard wants the man at his feet so badly that he has to keep looking away because every time he does look at McKay, he keeps being pulled toward him, he is drawn in. It seems like Sheppard can barely stand still, he seems to have to hold on to the dashboard to keep himself from doing anything.
Dex: Party's over. Sheppard: And we were having such a good time! Alright, let's see if we can hold them off.
We return to the jumper after some time has passed, and we find Sheppard standing just where he did before, rooted to the spot, hands on hips which is another way that he keeps himself still. Both men have their pelvis turned toward the other. Sheppard even tells Ronon he was having a good time, sardonic though the quip is meant to be. He was having a good time watching McKay. He was clearly enjoying it. He was slow to disentangle himself to see outside, and as he stands at the doorway of the jumper, he seems to be bouncing on his feet from a need to get back to where he came from. He seems to be really wired up, and there is a contrast here to just how still he was standing above McKay and how edgy he seems to be just as soon as he leaves his presence.
Before doing anything else, before giving any instruction to Ronon and Teyla, Sheppard runs back inside to tell McKay what to do to keep himself safe and unharmed. That is his first priority.
Sheppard: Soon as you get the DHD back online, dial the gate and make a run for it. When you get back to Atlantis, start working on those sandwiches. We'll be right behind you. McKay: Two minutes! Hold ‘em that long, we're good to go.
Sheppard makes it into a joke but what he is actually doing is making sure that McKay gets off the island. That is the most important thing to him, bar none. With any other loss he can live with (or not live), as long as he knows that McKay made it back. He tells McKay to go as soon as he gets the chance, and promises the others will follow without knowing whether that will be at all possible because he knows that otherwise he might not get McKay to go through. So he lies. Telling McKay to make a run for it is as close to giving him an order he can go, and this is in the interest of making sure that he is safe. He is willing to sacrifice all of their lives, the whole rest of the team, to make sure that McKay makes it back.
And then they get to boxing with the natives, trying to buy McKay that two minutes. We see Sheppard attempt to emulate Teyla to make himself a pair of batons given that the has been training the martial art with her, only to hurt his own knee. He goes for the baseball bat instead, and we are once more reminded that Sheppard likes them thick. We see how well this thick branch fits into his hands.
Sheppard manages to take down two men before he is overcome, and given that it is likely McKay's handgun that one of the prisoners is pointing at him, it is rather curious where he seems to be pointing the gun at here, as Sheppard draws himself up. And as Sheppard is drawing himself up surrounded by men, so is McKay drawing himself up from under the dashboard of the jumper.
McKay: That's it! I did it! We're ready to go! Torrell: See that? I knew you could do it.
Just as soon as McKay thought he had fixed the problem, we hear that his tone of voice is entirely different from before, happy and excited. He probably expected to see Sheppard at the doorway, having heard someone coming in while he was finishing. But alas, it is not Sheppard. It is someone that seems to believe in him nearly as much as Sheppard does, someone that may have a focus on him almost as intense as Sheppard has, someone who may even want him. But he does not love McKay the way Sheppard does. And the fact that he was there, now, at the doorway instead of Sheppard told McKay that something had gone terribly wrong. He knows that there was no way Sheppard would have allowed this to happen if he had been able to stop it. They were well and truly screwed.

Just a friendly reminder :)
Certain things in series and movies can be interpreted differently. Sometimes we see them in our own way and might not agree with others, but we should respect their opinions.
Having civil discussions is great for fans to share their thoughts and theories. But when people start attacking others for who they ship or how they interpret things, that’s when they cross a line.
It’s all fiction, and creators know where their story is headed, which might not match our expectations. We can imagine lots of endings, but we might all end up wrong, and that’s fine. We’re all different.
It’s okay to see the same scene differently and want a particular plot line to develop in a certain way. What’s not okay is shaming others for expressing their opinions about a fictional story and sharing their preferences for the plot (unless they really say something unethical). It’s fiction – it’s not that serious. But we need to remember that we’re dealing with real people who have real feelings and that words can hurt. Let’s respect each other’s tastes and opinions and just enjoy our favorite stories in peace. 🫶🏻

Making Yorkshire Parkin: When You Want to Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November (but you forgot)
I bought Lyle’s Golden Syrup on a whim in our international grocers months ago, nestled between the Marmite and jarred clotted cream. I didn’t know what golden syrup tasted like, I had no use for it, and no recipe I had ever read included it. Naturally, I bought it immediately. Walking by the racks of Japanese candy and multiple incidences of ramen noodles, I asked myself, “Is there a particular reason I’m buying this, or am I just pissed they don’t have Walker’s and don’t want to walk away empty-handed?”
Months later, I end up watching a video on parkin. Uses golden syrup. In this moment, the stars align.
How did I stumble on this? Well, I’m interested in historical food, and even more so historical baking, and November was coming up. Try the Guy Fawkes day cake, it proclaimed to me, and as I watched it, and it was described to me as an English gingerbread-style cake, i thought, “There’s nothing about that idea I don’t like! I can make parkin, it can’t be that hard. Not like i’m going to be able to buy it here to try it.”
And hard is not the word for it. Let’s go on a journey.
So the first thing is, that Yorkshire parkin isn’t the only parkin in town and so, as I glanced at recipes, i discovered that there were multiple theories of the business, and many of these theories involved insulting each others’ grandmothers. Lancashire parkin uses mainly golden syrup, resulting in a sweeter and softer-flavored cake, and I guess that’s why the only things a civilized human being knows about Lancashire is that it’s in the North of England, and it features in the Merrily Song from the Wind and the Willows. No, the more I read, the more I realized I wanted Yorkshire parkin, a dark, aggressive form of the cake that makes heavy use of black treacle and threatens to kick your teeth in. It’s no wonder that Yorkshire gets all the great wonders of the North, like Wuthering Heights, The Secret Garden, and that one pizza place I really liked.
It turns out that Yorkshire parkin uses a very small amont of golden syrup, and so you may be saying to yourself at this point, “Doc are you unnecessarily complicating your life to say you literally opened this stupid plastic bottle of sugar syrup?” to which I say, ‘No one asked you, okay?”
Black treacle is the first thing on this list, and this was actually the easy part. One of the ‘fun’ things about reading recipes from English to English (and sometimes even to English!) is that you have to make substitutions, and people’s attitude toward substitutions for ingredients run the gamut from questionable to hysteria. The good news is that this unites us all, and I am sure there will be several fine Brits yelling at me that unsulfured molasses is nothing like black treacle, in the same way that many Americans lost their mind at the mere suggestion that a digestive might be more or less equivalent to a graham cracker. I welcome your hatemail, Hail Satan , Lord of Spiders, just use unsulfured molasses and you’ll be fine.
But then we have the problem of “medium oatmeal.” The Brits are running on a completely different system than we are with our paltry three or so styles of oatmeal: Rolled, steel cut (often called Irish oats), and instant. There are some outliers, but they are mostly the exclusive purview of places where one might buy free-range ostrich farts and consensually squeezed oranges. Meanwhile, on a rainy rock in the North, we have seventeen separate grades of oatmeal, some of which are only found on one specific moor where young maidens cry over it, keening into the wind (An expensive delicacy not unlike kopi luwak) Try as I might, I found it near impossible to get medium oatmeal, and so I took the most reasonable out possible: Buying steel cut oats and frantically googling photos of medium oatmeal until I had processed it down to the rough appearance.
This is medium oatmeal. Probably.
The assembly of it is stunningly old-fashioned, and I’m not making a joke when I say it seems basically unchanged from the 1700s: You mix the sugar and butter ingredients together in a sauce pan until the sugar melts, and then throw it into the dry mix, putting it together and then throwing in an egg as some desperate attempt to give so loft to what is going to be a doorstop or perhaps the blunt object that was originally used to kill Guy Fawkes, as well as a splash of milk, though what it hopes to contribute to the action I can’t possibly imagine.
Having read over all this at 9:30 pm on the 5th of November, I ready myrself to assemble the parkin so I can leave it out for King James or whatever. Then I read the cook time on the cake: Seventy to Ninety Minutes.
“Fuck this shit, I’m American,” I said, cracking open a beer and heading upstairs with my sixteen guns while eagles cried and sang “God Bless The USA” overhead.
REMEMBER, REMEMBER, THE SIXTH OF NOVEMBER, WHEN ALL THESE INGREDIENTS ARE STILL SITTING IN MY KITCHEN.
So, I have followed the recipe. The cake is in the oven. What will it become? Stay tuned!

Welcome to the Cave of Delphi!
I promote love, not hate on this blog.
Apollo love (platonic) in particular.
If 1,000 people love Apollo, I am one of those people. If 100 people love Apollo, I am one of those people. If 10 people love Apollo, I am one of those people. If only 1 person loves Apollo, I AM that person. If nobody loves Apollo, than I have left this world. If the world is against Apollo, I am against the world.

Why is it that certain sensationalist trivias, still get peddled by professional historians as absolute truths? Like the Caranus debacle. PG's Alexander of Macedon, despite being an excellent account, still mentions the Caranus + Europa double alleged BBQfication. Even though, the timeline&Caranus' unicorn name, reek of myth? Or Stateira getting long distance impregnated by Darius (though Green suggests in fine print that Alexander raped her). What makes a historical tale more or less credible?
First, I’d caution that we look at when some of these books and articles were written. While the more recent version of Green’s Alexander of Macedon (U. Cal, Berkeley) is 1991, it’s a reprint of his much earlier Thames-and-Hudson bio from 1974, sans pictures. (Also, Green—who’s still alive and kicking!—is 97 this year, so that contextualizes his age.) A general critique of Peter for a while now (as far back as From Alexander to Actium) is that he’s not on top of the more recent publications in the field, which causes some of his conclusions to be dated. Many older scholars can be guilty of that. I can’t even keep up with everything coming out on Alexander and/or Philip and/or Macedonia each year, especially as more and more are in languages I don’t read, such as Italian or Spanish. Even my German is shaky.
OTOH, the proliferation of academic publications in various languages is great, as it signals a healthy field. OTOH, it’s problematic, as most people just don’t read multiple languages, and what languages might have been fashionable back in grad school has shifted since. Additionally, Americans are at a real disadvantage due to our very poor education system here when it comes to learning languages (Spanish aside)—unless one is wealthy enough to attend private schools. And that’s a topic for a different post about elite education in Classics, and the language barrier.
But the upshot is that, while older scholars often gain real breadth of knowledge that allows connections and conclusions younger scholars just can’t make yet, it can become harder to keep up with everything coming out, on top of teaching and service requirements at universities. I’d love to have more time to read the latest—but I can’t and get all my student papers graded, attend all the meetings I have to go to, prep new classes, learn online platforms, etc., etc.
One reason we try to protect pre-tenure faculty from undue service IS so they can write/publish (and do the reading required). Post-tenure, All That Other Stuff starts demanding our time. Way back in grad school, Gene Borza told me, “You will never have read so widely and know as much about a particular slice of the field than you do right now.” I thought he was joking. I know a lot more now than I knew then, to be sure—but feel perpetually behind on recent research.
Anyway, I mention the publication date because history is an ever-developing field. We can talk about Alexander studies as a series of “waves,” if you will. The initial wave viewed Alexander very positively, starting with Droysen (late 1800s), through Tarn, Burns, Milns, Robinson, some others, down into the 1960s and early ‘70s. Hammond was kinda the last of them, who published well into the ‘90s, also arguably Hamilton (although I see him as less forgiving). But this was the Great Man approach. Sources were taken mostly at face value, including Greek views of the Macedonians, with a distinct taste for colonialist narratives such as Plutarch (the Greek “civilizing” of the Barbarian East, etc.). Hammond, however, was among those who seriously questioned Greek views of Macedonians…even while he accepted other things uncritically.
So, in short, these are not absolutely separate buckets. Just general trends.
The next wave brought the Skeptics, engendered by Badian, Schachermeyer, Fredericksmeyer, Green, etc. It still had a fair bit of unconscious colonialist (and misogynistic) taint but began to do much more rigorous source criticism. Maybe ol’ Alexander wasn’t so great, after all. I think of Ian Worthington as still in that vein—Hammond’s flip side. Ha. (Which is funny as Ian edited Nick’s festschrift [a collection of papers in honor of a person]. But Hammond was a legend in his lifetime. Regardless of whether one agrees with everything he wrote, his impact on Macedonian history simply can’t be overestimated. I don’t think anybody, ever again, will [or can] have that sort of influence, given how the field has grown.)
Anyway, around the same time, Macedonian studies (and Philip) were opening as a field in their own right, thanks to Edson and Dell—and Hammond—followed by Borza, Errington, Ellis, Cawkwell, Walbank (Hellenistic), and Greeks like Hatzopoulos and Palagia, then Greenwalt, Anson, Adams, Heckel, Carney, Baynham, Atkinson, etc.
(I’m leaving out names, I’m sure, as I’m doing this on the fly without my library at hand, so apologies.)
Anyway, these things dovetailed to give us some new perspectives, including an attempt to detangle Macedonia from S. Greece, and to spot the misogyny behind texts (thank you, Carney and MacCurdy, et al.), and generally to think further about matters of culture and textual context.
I was a grad student at the back end of that wave, btw.
The “new”(-ish) wave(s?) have been to further contextualize our sources, not just to separate Greek from Macedonian, or to seek the sources behind our extant biographies, but to better recognize the Roman (imperial) overlay. It’s not that earlier historians didn’t know our existing sources were Roman era, but that the focus had been on trying to determine the sources behind our surviving sources: e.g., Kallisthenes, Kleitarchos, Ptolemy, Aristobulos, etc. Lionel Pearson’s The Lost Historians of Alexander the Great was the classic text of that type. What Pearson (and others) did less was talk about contemporary (Roman) influences on our surviving authors.
This new wave includes scholars like Asirvatham, Müller, Ogden, Bowden, Spencer, Pownall, Howe, Finn, etc., etc. There’s also good work being done on military stuff, following Heckel. They’re very much into the textual evidence. Also Carney still, and Baynham. So these are new trends in Alexander historiography.
A feature of this third/fourth wave has been to pick apart some heretofore accepted stories—such as, say, proskynesis. Or the story of Statiera mentioned in the Ask. You’ll see that new take in the forthcoming Netflix docudrama. Alexander isn’t so hands-off. Although I don’t think it was rape so much as Realpolitik, once it became clear Darius had abandoned his family to their fate. And maybe not even Alexander’s idea. 😉
We saw such questioning even in the second/early third wave. Take Karanos. That’s been questioned by Borza, Carney, Greenwalt, et al. BUT Greenwalt has really interesting things to say about the evolving genealogy of the Argead house across time, with morphing forefathers, depending on who the king was. So we get Perdikkas under Alexandros I and Perdikkas “II,” then an Archelaos under Archelaos (Euripides’ lost play), and finally, Karanos under Philip II (or post-Philip). Jonathan Hall in (et al.) Hellenicities talks about the creation of these falsified genealogies in ancient Greece as a means to build and (re-)affirm bonds for political, military, and trade purposes. These things don’t stay the same across time.
The upshot remains that it’s important to check the publication date for any particular book or article, and be sure it’s the original publication, too. Again, the 1991 Univ. of Cal, Berkeley edition of Alexander of Macedon = the 1974 Thames and Hudson’s book of the same title. (If you Google it, you’ll find the “originally published” date, btw.) In short, he wrote it before most people had begun to question the finer points of Kleopatra-Eurydike’s murder by Olympias. OR before so much doubt had been thrown on Justin as a source. (Just wait for the chapter by Carney in the work I’m currently editing. She’s going to trash and burn OH, so much of Trogus/Justin. I’ll give no more spoilers, but yeah. It’s a long, but very good chapter on historiography.)
So publishing date is one thing to look at.
The other is WHO did the writing.
There’s always been a small cottage industry in publishing on Alexander, but quite a few bios have come out recently by people who aren’t Macedonian specialists, or even (sometimes) trained Greek historians (Everitt, I’m looking at you).* Even Goldsworthy’s dual bio, which formed the basis of the recent History Channel episode, was written by a Romanist, albeit he’s known for his military topics. Paul Cartledge, who also wrote a popular bio on ATG, is a specialist on Sparta. Some scholars are one-foot-in, like Carol Thomas, who did Alexander and His World (2006). She knows more about Macedonia due to personal contacts, but her area of serious scholarship is the Dark Age/Early Archaic Age (= Early Iron Age).
So, yes, it’s really important to ask, Who wrote the book/article I’m reading? How deep are they into scholarship on ancient Macedonia/Alexander/Philip II, etc.
The latest bios of Alexander by actual Alexander specialists are Sabine Müller’s Alexander Der Grosse: Eroberungen - Politik – Rezeption (2019), Franca Landucci’s Alessandro Magno (2019), Hugh Bowden’s Alexander the Great, a very short introduction (2014), Edward Anson’s Alexander the Great: Themes and Issues (2013), Lindsay Adams Alexander the Great: Legacy of a Conqueror (2005), and Ian Worthington’s Alexander the Great: Man and God (2004) and the later By the Spear, which includes Phil, too (2016). (Ed Anson also did Philip II, Father of Alexander the Great: Themes and Issues, 2020.) I've probably missed one, so apologize in advance. Again...library is in my office.
If you want to read a biography of Alexander, read a couple of those.
I’ve thought more seriously of late about writing my own biography, intended for non-specialists (e.g., without footnotes but with “for further reading”). Many of these by my colleagues have been textbooks, like Lindsay’s and Ed’s. I’d be more inclined to write it for the interested non-specialist. But I’d have to find a publisher, and I wouldn’t even seriously consider it until this Hephaistion & Krateros book is done.
Also, I might have a hard time selling “yet another” biography on Alexander, especially if it’s not dripping with drama and/or cherished myth and/or doesn’t try to paint Alexander as either a god or a monster.
Or maybe THAT could be the selling point. “This is the biography by a specialist that brings the interested reader up to date on the latest scholarship regarding Alexander, Philip, and Argead Macedonia, but does it in layman’s language, and isn’t a college textbook.”
---------------------
*You may wonder why publishers buy books from historians who aren’t Macedonian specialists? Well, sometimes they want that. Carol wrote hers precisely because she’s not a specialist, but had contacts who were, and therefore was thought to be better at breaking it all down for students. Other publishers want the sensationalist stuff, or a “new angle” (which is rarely actually new).

*Cracks Nuckes* Alrighty...
... So!
I’ve a Discord server!
... Long story short, it’s a simp server! Given the kind of blog I run, it should be kind of obvious on who the focus is on!
It’s... Kind of a small-ish server. But I’m lookin’ to sort of expand!
However, I’m not going to hand out invites. Mainly because there was another server before(that shall remain nameless) that got overrun by some toxic peeps. And I would very much like to avoid a repeat of that.
So, with that said: I do have some rules laid out. Please, look ‘em over. And if you’re interested, feel free to hit me with a DM, and I shall provide the invite!
Rules:
No Minors.
This is an 18+ Server. Content of the NSFW nature will be found in the server. With that in mind, there will be absolutely no minors allowed. If you are under the age of 18, you will be removed.
No Harassment. Don't let the term "Maiden" dissuade you. We at Margit's Maidens are welcoming toward all individuals! Any form of discrimination, be it in the form of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or the like, will not be tolerated.
Anyone who has a history of wishing IRL harm upon persons who have dabbled into fiction that is not to their particular taste will be removed.
Be Respectful. We understand it’s not possible to get along with everyone all the time, but please, do not drag drama in here and do not create drama within the server. If you have an issue with someone in the server, either learn to coexist peacefully, or block the user in question.
As said before, we are a simp server. We're here to share different works, be it from others or our own. Links are always appreciated.
All works are welcome and appreciated, but are not required. I don't want to see anyone tearing down other's works, or posting about "Person X has written about Z and that's bad." It puts a damper on everyone's mood, and tends to lead to hard feelings. We are not here to bring other people down.
Likewise, we do occasionally dabble into discussions regarding lore. And, given that the Soulsborne games leave a lot to the imagination, it often leads to the creation of many headcanons, some of which may contradict lore. Not everyone shares the same headcanon. Which is fine! But please, keep things civil. We don't need anyone fighting over "your headcanon is wrong and mine is right."
"Your kink is not my kink, and that's okay!" Content found in the server can range from vanilla to Dead Dove.
For those unfamiliar with the term, Dead Dove is often associated with works that contain content of a troubling material. Or just isn’t really someone’s cup of tea. Notable examples include Berserk, and A Song of Ice and Fire, the former of which the Soulsborne games are heavily influenced by, and the latter of which the author himself helped shape the story of Elden RIng. Both of these works are known for their grizzly depictions of violence and rape, among many other things.
It's alright. It's perfectly fine if that's not your cup of tea. But I do want you to understand that, whatever is being depicted in fanworks, be it fanart or fanfiction, in-server or out, we are heavily against harassment(see No Harrasment up above.)
I don't want to see anyone shamed for being into scat, non-con or the like. And I especially do not want to see anyone wishing harm on anyone who’s dabbled into works that involve, say, Mohg and Miquella for example.
These are fictional characters. Please, recognize that these events, no matter how upsetting they are, are not real.
If you don’t like it, don’t read.
P.S: I don’t have a server directory made up at the moment, so um... Bear with me on that. ^^

//ball or something to welcome Rig as governor 👀. Also I added in some half-demon children because CC would have been amazing with them. Rioben, Ethine, & Nephamael - tripet children of Jesiba and Eldrin. For Bryce!!//
Eldrin held his position, watching at Apollion turned away the priestess didn't fall. She held herself, watching her sisters burn.
He slid eyes to his king, Apollion remembered the Dark Days when the Asteri had come to Helheihm and subjugated them.
When Orcus, Mantyx, and Erawan had rose up and rallied their people and overthrew them.
Those memories were faint for him, so many generations removed from that. He met Apollion's eyes as he passed him.
His voice, the voice of ancestors in his mind.
"You're welcome. You'll be weaker with something like that."
Eldrin didn't comment, simply watched Jesiba as they were called to turn away.
Eldrin slipped out of the camp, his brothers waiting. They dissapered into the dark.
The landspace was ravaged with death and bodies. Was this what his ancestors faced during the Asteri Civil War? When titants made the skies bleed?
------
Jesiba stared at Eldrin as the fire crackled in front of them. His brothers moved silently around the camp.
"I thought Valg couldn't rebel."
Eldrin tilted his head and slowly shook his head.
"No. We - we do not need mates to reproduce. Valg reproduce asexually, forming children from our energy. Children are always born in clusters of 2 to 6. Apollion is the progenitor of my line, stretching back to the first Kings we ever had after the Asteri tried to take our world. It's not that we can't rebel, many choose to follow their last living ancestor, we venerate our ancestors."
He looked to his hands, flexing them.
"He was trying to kill you, break you because -"
"We're mates, I know. I felt the bond snap when you looked to me."
Jesiba stared at the fire, did any of her witch magic remain? What was she now?
She exhaled, nails digging into the sand. She didn't have the luxury to wallow. She needed to understand this, use it to her advantage and keep going. That's what she owed her sisters, her coven and books.
A thought formed and even now, even knowing so little about this male - she recoiled at the mere idea.
"It's why he ate Sirius didn't he?"
Eldrin gave a grave nod.
"His mate, she was a threat. But perhaps he didn't want to kill her but keep her for himself."
"Jesiba do you have a plan?"
Lykos walked to him, his voice soft gentle. A healer's voice, patient. Jesiba swallowed the tears, the pain and stared at the fire.
"Protect the books, survive long enough to kill them all."
Eldrin's other brothers Noxtis and Faelan snickered.
"Suits us, I've always wanted to taste an Asteri's heart."
------
Rioben gritted his teeth he'd drank far too much last night. And these events were best enjoyed sober.
He gravitated to where Danika and Bryce stood. He thankfully hadn't seen either of his parents yet - he didn't much need their looks of disapproval. Not everyone was as doom and gloom as them.
"You seen the new hotshot governor yet?"
His brother Nephamael snorted and gestured to the doors with his chin. Rigelus has stepped through, he cut an imposing figure in black. His eyes flickered to them and away as people he seemed to know reached him.
He smiled leaning down to whisper something in the female's near him. Silarial, she was beautiful Rioben thought. She glittered and glowed like the Asteri she was.
He felt Nephamael's irritation in their psychic bond.
"Please don't start mooning over someone too. I can barely stand it when Ethine gets all starry eyed about Talathain."
Danika rolled her eyes sipping at her drink.
"So he's going to pretend he doesn't know us? Alright then."
Rioben and his siblings had come to visit their mother antiques shop soon after Bryce had started. They'd all clicked with her quickly, becoming fast friends with Danika, and Bryce. Ethine in particular was always excited to do girls night to get away from her brothers.
On cue, she came to their side. Her fingers intertwined with her fiance's. Talathain was downright kind for a fae knight. Chivalrous and devoted. He and Ethine had been together since they'd met during his Ordeal in the Underkingdom.
Ethine's eyes glowed with excitement, a sharp contrast to her parents and brothers more reserved nature.
"Bryce! Danika! Hi! Oh you both look gorgeous! Sorry we're late -"
"Talathain isn't."
Nephamael murmured earning him a glare from Ethine.
"I told you to stop reading his emotions Neph."
"I would if he didn't broadcast them so loudly."
Talathain watched in amusement as they began to bicker. He was used to this, especially when all 3 of them could read emotions, must be the demon blood in them. He didn't care, Ethine was it for him - he didn't want anyone else.
He looked to Bryce, reaching to give her and Danika quick hugs.
"Where's Connor? He's coming right?"
Bryce had strongly considered not coming to the ball. Learning that Rigelus, of all the people in the world, was going to be the new Governor of Lunathian had been hard enough. Knowing that he was going to be there in the city again, so close to her physically yet so far away in every other sense, had been hard enough. She had never gotten over him; not really. The thought of their kiss before he had left her always lingered in the back of her mind.
Even after the dreams had started, when she was so sure she had started speaking to her mate.
But, Danika had convinced her she needed to go. It was expected of her, of course, but it was also a way to make sure Rigelus didn't know how much power he held over her. She had even talked Connor into being her "date" for the evening, just to fuck with Rig a beat. As far as she knew, the male didn't know that Connor already had a mate and that he and Bryce hadn't been a thing since just after college. She was more than happy to make Rig think they were dating - and Theresa, Connor's mate, had thought it a hilarious idea. She was more than happy to agree, and Bryce was more than happy to treat her to a spa day in return.
Now she was watching as the new Governor entered and immediately started whispering to a gorgeous female Bryce could only assume was an Asteri. The two of them seemed so... close. So intimate. The wave of jealousy that washed over her was almost overwhelming, and she was surprised that she didn't break the stem of her champagne flute with how tightly she gripped it.
He barely even looked at me, that bastard...
Her friend's words pulled her out of her sulking and she forced a smile to her face as she returned Talathain's hug.
"Hey! Yeah, Connor's coming tonight; he should be here any minute, actually. We were supposed to come together but we couldn't convince him to let his mate go just yet," she replied, rolling her eyes with an affectionate smile.

I totally get not caring for a particular character or ship or something. We all have our own tastes. What I don’t understand is why some people feel the need to be total assholes towards those who do like a character or ship that they can’t stand.
On the flip side, some people do need to grow a thicker skin and accept the fact that not everyone likes their favorite character or ship or whatever.
This is one of those asks where unfortunately I’m not able to tell if you’re sending it to me in good faith or bad faith, which is a shame. I’m hoping it’s good faith, so I’d like to answer seriously and trust that you’ll take it that way also.
Let me start by saying that I don't believe anyone is under the impression that everyone should like their favorite character or ship. We're all adults here. We all know that preferences exist. It's a matter of how we choose to honor and respect those preferences.
There are absolutely instances where a thicker skin should be grown. I can think of a number of situations where that can happen, such as if people are having a civil discussion about things they disagree about, but because one of the parties feels uncomfortable, they start throwing pretty rough accusations or virtue signaling to try and make the conversation end as quickly as possible. I get it. It can feel super icky and squirmy if someone has a different viewpoint from ours. Sometimes it’s really hard just to say, “Hey, I feel a little cornered. I wanna check in that we’re both still feeling okay about this, and if we’re not, then I’d like to agree to disagree. We can just leave it here with mutual respect, all right?”
But there’re also times where it really doesn’t come down to someone being overly sensitive. It comes down to downright meanness and rudeness.
Let’s be honest. There is a very high probability that you and I both know what’s being talked about. I don’t have to spell it out. So let’s be frank with each other. If you go through one of these tags, post after post of insightful, creative, loving, funny, interesting commentary, and not a single rude or mean thing to be said. The other one, a similar situation, but interspersed with just outright rude, mean, and intentionally inflammatory comments that absolutely did not need to be put in the tag at all. There seems to be this belief that certain characters or ships are disliked with an equal amount of vehemence, like two warring factions. This is clearly not accurate.
This isn’t a situation where someone just needs to grow a thicker skin. If there is a ship/character tag that is completely left alone by the people who don’t care for it versus a ship/character tag that keeps getting rudeness filtered in every so often, this doesn’t mean that the latter group of enjoyers should just…not experience annoyance about it nor withhold expressing that annoyance. And again, there is a distinct difference between civil discussion/disagreement/opposing opinions and intentionally inflammatory statements. I like to believe that people can generally tell the difference between them and react accordingly.
Everyone is free to express their own thoughts on this platform as long as they’re not against TOS. We all know this and we all respect this. This applies also to how we choose to use tags. There is a generally understood etiquette that if you’re saying something just outright mean about a character or a ship, you don’t put it in that specific tag. This is not a requirement. No one is asserting that it is. It’s just a polite courtesy because we recognize that tags are used by the people who browse those characters/ships because they enjoy them, so we don’t typically like to rain on their parade.
But this also means that if someone says something rude—if someone walks into somebody’s sandbox and kicks sand in their eyes—then they have no room to whine if that person stands up and complains about it, and they really have no excuse for doubling down with EXTRA rudeness either. If someone tells us not to tease an animal, and we do it twenty times in a row anyway, then ultimately we are responsible for the fact that we were bitten.
Notably, I am saying this about all people involved in a fandom. Including those who are intentionally inflammatory in the tags of posts where they really did not need to commentate. There's a way to say, "I'm surprised by this and I really don't understand how we got here," without implying that anyone who disagrees is lacking in taste. Again, differing preferences. Respecting them. Standing up and walking away from the keyboard if we experience a big and overwhelming emotion in our chest so we can ensure that we don't just kick a hornet's nest for the sake of feeling personally superior. So anyway! After that big long ramble, I’m happy to say that I agree with you. I just also believe in people’s right to express annoyance—especially if it’s untagged and on their own blog—when someone shows up and, again, kicks the sand around. And hell, for all I know, maybe you agree with that too and I made some assumptions about this ask out of habit due to some particularly awful anon asks that I’ve gotten recently. But I’d really, really like it if there was less sandkicking all around because, y’all, I really like it here. I love all of these characters and ships so fucking much. You only have to glance at my AO3 page to see that. And I’d really like to keep having fun with you all instead of flinching every time Tumblr yet again recommends me a super intentionally inflammatory post in a tag that I follow.
#again i really am sorry that i have to flinch and question if this was sent in good faith or not#especially if you and i are often interacting in other spaces then you probably know that i really don't like to stir things up#and i try to believe that everyone is approaching a conversation with the best intentions at heart#it's the anon of it all that makes me nervous and i hope you can understand that and forgive me for being cautious#am i a soft hearted person who really wishes we could just be polite as a society and have conversations? yes absolutely#i've been in too many fandom trenches to want otherwise#i know i know i will not survive the winter etc you don't have to remind me what happens to overly compassionate people#but i've taken direct personal sometimes painful action to make sure i don't turn into the kind of person that i hate to be around#and i would really like to see other people do the same#my ramblings

Unveiling the Timeless Connection: Unearthing the Fascinating Bond between Humans and Plants through Ethnobotany
For as long as we can remember, man has shared a special relationship with plants. From providing essential nutrients to inspiring life-saving medicines and from providing soul-nourishing beauty to providing an anchor of stability in our daily lives, plants have been an incredibly important part of our lives. In this article, we explore the fascinating field of ethnobotany, the study of how people interact with and use plants. This timeless relationship, between man and plants, has been passed down generation after generation, and this article is an exploration of the evolution of this ancient yet unbelievably complex and beautiful relationship.
The Ancient Relationship Between Man And Plants: Exploring Ethnobotany
Imagine a world without plants - no colorful flowers to brighten our day, no towering trees to provide shade, and no delicious fruits to savor. As humans, our connection with plants goes far beyond mere aesthetics and sustenance. It is a relationship that has been nurtured and cherished for centuries, woven deeply into the tapestry of our existence.
Enter the fascinating field of ethnobotany, the study of how different cultures interact with plants. Ethnobotany takes us on a captivating journey through time, unearthing the intricate ways in which plants have shaped our lives and societies.
Long before modern medicine, our ancestors turned to the plant kingdom for healing remedies. In the face of illness and injury, they discovered the hidden powers of leaves, roots, and flowers. From soothing chamomile teas to potent willow bark pain relievers, nature provided the medicine cabinet for our early civilizations.
As Pliny the Elder once wisely said, Nature is the only book that offers knowledge without deceit, and love without regret.
Beyond their medicinal properties, plants have played a pivotal role in our cultural and spiritual practices. Ancient rituals and ceremonies frequently revolved around the use of particular plants, invoking their mystical qualities and honoring their sacred essence. From the incense of frankincense to the intoxicating effects of the peyote cactus, plants have served as conduits to the divine.
But it wasn't just the spiritual realm that benefited from our green companions. Plants have been our steadfast companions, providing us with food, shelter, and even tools. The invention of agriculture revolutionized human existence, allowing us to settle in one place and build civilizations. We owe our very survival to the humble plant.
Plants provided the sustenance we needed to thrive, nourishing our bodies and stimulating our taste buds.
They sheltered us from the elements, providing a safe haven in the form of sturdy wooden structures and cozy leafy canopies.
Plants gifted us with the materials for crafting tools, enabling us to shape the world around us.
Today, as we navigate the complexities of the modern world, our bond with plants remains as strong as ever. We find solace and peace in tending to our gardens, connecting with nature in a way that rekindles the ancient flame. The study of ethnobotany reminds us of our roots, grounding us in the knowledge that we are part of a vast and interconnected ecosystem.
So next time you find yourself marveling at the beauty of a blooming flower or savoring the flavors of a bountiful harvest, take a moment to acknowledge the ancient relationship between man and plants. It is a story of resilience, discovery, and profound gratitude. As we continue to explore the wonders of ethnobotany, let us honor and protect the botanical treasures that have shaped the course of human history.

[BOOK TOUR] STARLIGHT JEWEL (GIFTS OF THE AULDTREE #1) // E.L. LYONS
Welcome to my stop on the tour for STARLIGHT JEWEL, the first book in an adult dark fantasy trilogy by E.L. LYONS, hosted by ESCAPIST BOOK CO.
Axly, the Starlight Jewel of the title, is a human-sprygan hybrid, a highly-skilled trained seductress, thief, and assassin -- and a traitor to everyone she loves. To keep her human brother with a dangerous gift safe from falling into the wrong hands, she treads down darker and darker paths and has to contend with divided loyalties, romance, and discovering the light within herself.
The strength of the book for me lies in its mythology of sprygans and hybrids - their anatomy, their culture, their magic and gifts (see the pictures below!) - as well as its compelling characters - in particular, Axly and her complexities, Grim (see the artwork of him and his dog Cleatus above) and his unwavering sense of duty and his impact on Axly as they get closer, pulled apart, and re-collide time and time again. The sprygans are interesting creatures, yet despite having our protagonist be half-sprygan and more connected to sprygans than perhaps any other character in the book, they still retain an aura of mystery as we slowly uncover more about them and their gifts throughout the story. I did think the story could've also used more focus on the plot, as I found it to be meandering and tangential at times, but if approaching it from a lens of character study and a story revolving around themes of loyalty, self-discovery, (found) family, and the lengths one will go to for love and finding meaning in one's actions and sacrifices, the book definitely delivered.
Book Information:
Starlight Jewel by E.L. LyonsSeries: Gifts of the Auldtree Trilogy
Genre: Dark Fantasy
Intended Age Group: Adult
Pages: 493
Published: September 13, 2022
Publisher: Self Published

Book Blurb:
Axly, the Starlight Company's premier seductress-thief and assassin, will do whatever it takes to keep her human brother hidden. The secrets of his origin could tear their world apart, and keeping them has driven her to lies and murder. Her people, the sprygan-human hybrids that live under the city of Minalav, aren't keen on allowing their most skilled asset to roam free. A job with a human offers a chance to get her brother out of danger, but it comes at a price. Divided loyalties, duty, romance, and the twisted hands of fate intertwine in this epic fantasy adventure.
Gifts of the Auldtree is a world of mythology, glamor, mud, blood, civilizations in conflict, and hints of distant powers. In the center of this is the mysterious Starlight Jewel of Minalav.

We Live Artist of the Week: Procrastinatrix
youtube
We Live is more than just your average morning radio show taking place in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. Sure, guests call from all over the world and end their interview by getting eaten by zombies live on the air. Sure, these guests are athletes, musicians, artists, actors, journalists, and overall legends. But We Live is more than listening to hilarious interviews that always end the same way - people dying. It also is a show that plays the best indie and underground music on planet Earth.
The governments of the world have collapsed. Zombies lurch on every corner of the world. The living are encouraged to stay home and stay safe. But that doesn’t seem to happen. The world goes on, just with zombies. And since all bets are off, that means the industry conglomerates no longer own the radio waves. Thanks to the end of civilization as we know it, and the rise of undead ghouls, we all get to listen to amazing music from phenomenal artists.
We Live boasts the best underground music library from indie artists anywhere that the living still survives. Every week, we bring you music from around the globe that you would most likely never hear anywhere else. We’ll prove it. Go ahead and check out our Bandcamp page. And those are just some of our celebrated artists. We also search abandoned record stores and music studios for CDs, tapes, records, and even 8-tracks of forgotten or never “broke-through” musicians. We also search Soundcloud and Spotify for artists waiting to get noticed.
Every week, we highlight one particular artist or band that we think you’ll really enjoy regardless of your taste in music. This week, that band is PROCRASTINATRIX.
Music Gateway had this to say about the Welsh techno innovator: Based near Ystradgynlais, Procrastinatrix is a prolific Electronic Music artist with 10 albums & EP’s under his belt. He spends most of his time avoiding practical tasks and instead channeling his creativity into Ableton making spooky, off-kilter beats. Somewhere between Synth-pop and Experimentica, his music is at once catchy, discombobulating, hypnotic, wonky & strangely listenable. If you had to pin him to a genre, he’d say it’s Neo-Nostalgia. You can read the post here. Procrastinatrix’s music is covered throughout all of Episode 4 titled “Ashes to Ashes”. Listen to We Live on Spotify and enjoy every episode HERE. You can take a listen to their song on this week’s episode in the link below. Also remember that our 24/7 Deadline messaging phone number is open for voicemail or text. If you have anyone you’d like us to discover, please let us know at +1(360)836-0628.

Chapter 5: Fieldwork
youtube
Racism :
Racism is always thoughts and actions that create unequal access to power and has always been engraved in the history of our country. It is apart of the foundation of it. During the year of 2020 after the death of George Floyd our country was in an uproar. Several celebrities spoke out and rapper Lil Baby made a song called "the bigger picture" which addresses many of the racial issues in America. He speaks about some of the stereotypes of African American and White people throughout the song. He used his platform to make a statement and deliver a message to all his fans across the country and across the globe.
White Supremacy :
White Supremacists believe that other races our biologically inferior to them because they are white. The KKK group is one of the largest most known white supremacists groups in the country. They are known for using there power to diminish people of color. The white supremacy groups continue to perpetuate throughout our country and no changes have been made.
Jim Crow :
The Jim Crow era was the era that followed the civil ear where laws were implemented to enforce legal segregation. Black people were still treated as lesser even after slavery ended. We were forced to attend separate schools, sit in the back of bus and if we failed to comply we were brutalized and even arrested. This period for black people was extremely traumatic. It was a taste of freedom without truly being free. It caused a mental and physical strain over our community and continues to affect us to this day.
Institutional Racism :
Institutional Racism is patterns in which inequality is structured through key systems. In many schools and other institutions racism is implemented in the core values. The basis of school was built with racist history like the Jim Crow era. Many of these institutions are just now beginning to fix these places so people of color can have the equal opportunity we are promised with being citizens in America.
Racialization :
Racialization is the process categorizing a particular racial character to a person or group of people. After 9/11 many muslim and Arabic people were racially categorized and called slurs for several years to come. This country has a tendency of grouping together all people of a group in one category. It is extremely harmful to do this because it can result in many other things like hate crimes and hate speech. Many people became fearful for there lives just because of there ethnic or religious background.
Microaggression :
Microaggression verbal behavior that show hostile behavior about someone. It is very prevalent in our youth today. Many people of color growing up face these issues among there pears. Microaggression can stem from many things other than just race like sex and gender. It is almost like following stereotypical norms. These harsh stereotypes can create false perceptions of who we are as people.

Enjoy, Don’t Fight.
Enjoy watching your favorite movies and series, shipping characters, and analyzing content. Enjoy creating fan art and writing fanfiction if that’s what excites you. Enjoy being part of a fandom and interacting with fellow fans.
We’re all here because we share a common interest. We're intrigued by a particular fictional story and want to connect with others who feel the same way.
But sometimes, people forget why we’re all here. They lose sight of what truly matters and fixate on things they don’t like.
Within a fandom, there can be thousands of people, each with their own interpretations and preferences. Some form subfandoms to discuss specific aspects of their favorite story. People may have favorite characters, ships, or simply watch for the plot. The possibilities are endless.
And here’s the thing – people can interpret things in multiple ways, and all perspectives are valid. It’s all fiction. None of it is real. Some enjoy analyzing cinematography, sharing theories, or discussing ships. It’s their prerogative. If it doesn’t appeal to you, then it's not for you. Yes, you heard it right – it's not for you unless specified.
Let people enjoy what they like, and move on if it doesn’t align with your interests. Everyone has different tastes, and there’s no point in engaging in online arguments or ship wars.
Now, don’t get me wrong – it’s fine to have civil discussions and debates within the fandom, as long as everyone is treated with respect.
However, if you come across something you don’t like (and it's harmless), just let it go. Move on and continue with your day. Posts about ships or opinions you disagree with shouldn’t bother you because, in most cases, they weren’t directed at you. Unless it's something inherently harmful or unethical, let others enjoy what they like, and do the same for yourself. Connect with like-minded individuals and ignore those with differing preferences and opinions. Don’t take it all too seriously; just have fun.
After all, we're in a fandom to celebrate our favorite fictional stories and have a good time. Enjoy yourself and let others enjoy too.
