overanalyzing enhypen's sacrifice music video :P
I am actually a huge engene and I had the strong urge to analyze this m/v. I spent a solid half hour doing this so I hope you like this massive rant (but seriously this is a huge rant)
so... there were 3 main sets
this one which seems to represent heaven

this seems like a sorta in between area since windows are after symbols of portals

so the music video starts out in heaven, the imagery of Sunoo with angel wings is shown and all the members are wearing white. Which obviously implies that they are angels.

this moment seems to depict Jay literally climbing up the "stairway to heaven", now the lyrics of the song go...

I'm twisted (Twisted) far away
so this is showing them (enhypen) climbing up to heaven from hell. In the song we also hear mentions of the river lethe from greek mythology. Which is the river that souls would go in to erase their memories of their past life.
After this, we cut to a scene of the heaven set flashing red followed by the scene of Heesung in the middle of the window room. this leads me to the logical conclusion that enhypen are angels that fell from heaven.
after Heesung is banished to the window place we get back into the pre-chorus and this time around the lyrics have changed

meanwhile, we see sunoo and his angel wings this time surrounded by black feathers. this could mean one of two things... bro is evil or the actual symbolic meaning of black feathers which is that "better things are coming"
So after that we cut to several scenes. We see Niki with his arms tied up to a swing in window place and then Sunoo dragging the angel wings up to heaven again but this time they're covered in black paint (goop? idk man).
Jake also climbs up this "stairway to heaven" and places a darkened heart on the podium thing. Then the music video flashes from heaven to hell again and again, the lyrics going...

so basically, after my EXTREME over analyzation of this music video, i have come to the conclusion that it is an allusion to the things we would do for love.
Starting out in heaven and lowering yourself to hell actually is pretty similar to how people go "to hell and back for love". The blackened heart shows the obsession that they have with that person and how their love for them has essentially corrupted them

i watched the first 3 eps of daisy jones and the six. my thoughts are, i’ll probably watch the rest of the series bc i am always a sucker for the fake-documentary conceit and getting to see these characters several years removed from the events of the story, able to comment on their flaws and extrapolate about the mistakes they made etc etc. i know it’s based on a book so i’m tempted to go in search of that to just read but for now, here’s what i think of the show: 
the first three eps felt a little thin, especially since you spent the whole time just WAITING for them all to finally connect. despite daisy having less Plot™ to get through, i think riley keough is pretty great in this steve nicks-type character (not perfect, but definitely compelling) and the vibes are so strong that i enjoyed her scenes soooo much more than anything going on with the dunne brothers and their v obvious story beats. sam claflin as billy specifically is...fine? but the character feels v shallow and he seems miscast age-wise—i know they’re all having to play older in the interview scenes but he is not believable as a young-20 something musician, especially when surrounded by so many other baby faced actors. hopefully as the episodes progress his age starts to match the scenes better? the best thing he has going for him in this role is definitely his voice, which does sound good with riley’s and i’m eager to hear more of their songs together, but performance-wise...eh. he’s a little forgettable—case in point, i literally finished the 3rd episode like 15 minutes ago and i already had to use google to figure out his character’s name while typing this up. 
as for the other characters, eddie seems v two-dimensional. i hope he gets some added depth beyond just being the jealous would-be lead singer—i’m getting strong jason lee in almost famous vibes, except jason lee was actually funny in that role and contributed more that just barely hidden resentment. i will admit i’m onboard for the karen/graham will they/won’t they, so i’m intrigued to see where that goes, though when they’re separate from each other they’re a little less distinct. i DID enjoy karen’s reaction to daisy in the recording studio so i’m eager to see how that relationship develops. warren is, unfortunately, the after thought comic relief who doesn’t seem to contribute much other than sight gags about mustaches and 70s drug references. camila, unfortunately, bears the brunt of being intimately tied to the character i care least about in the show, but i do enjoy the spark they’ve managed to highlight in her—the scene of her standing up for herself after finding billy in the van was solid. she’s definitely playing a v specific trope—the first wife in the musician biopic, the ginnifer goodwin as vivian cash in walk the line—and seems to be somewhat inspired by linda mccartney (the photographer to paul’s singer/songwriter), so i’ll wait to see what they do with her. 
my favorite two characters though, by far, have to be simone and teddy, who both feel more real and lived in than any of the others. they have the benefit of also having storylines and interior lives removed from daisy or billy (had to google his name again, yikes)—the scene of simone coming home from that horrifying recording day to find daisy sitting on the floor and finding herself unable to explain just what happened, what made her skin crawl, how she’s feeling...damn that was good. also, her stunned reaction to the bold woman at the party being so direct—the scene was so charged and i’m hoping we get to see that nyc club owner return. and teddy as a music producer who’s had a bad run of failed records trying to get his colleagues to put faith in his gut instincts instead of saddling him with christmas albums of old timers is especially poignant. his physicality does a great job showing the physicality of the stress he feels professionally, especially when he finds himself starting to care for these two young singers, separately, and then, eventually, deciding to bring them together is really lovely—i’m hoping they take some time to explore WHY exactly he felt compelled to introduce them, what drove him to do that, but i won’t be surprised if it’s left unsaid. i’m hoping simone and teddy continue to shine and don’t get sidelined now that daisy and sam claflin have finally met, but we’ll definitely have to wait and see.

In June, Sexyy Red exchanged receipts with King Von’s sister to seemingly prove who’s dating Chief Keef. Now, the ‘U My Everything’ rapper has clarified their relationship status. As mentioned, Post asked Sexyy Redd about her ties to Chief Keef at one point during their ride. “It’s genuine. That’s my peoples, that’s my dawg. Like, ion got too many homeboys that I can sit on the phone with,” she said. Quickly adding, “And I’m not even saying that’s my homeboy ’cause I don’t know what we got going on. Been a while, how’s everybody doin’?  Me, I’m just doing the same ol’ husband/father/jaded American worker thing, exhausted but well aware of how fortunate I am.  As with any art, the irony is that inspiration is too often tied to depression, frustration, and a need for change.  I regarded the past few years of rap music as some of the strongest in recent memory, which is not a coincidence, considering how increasingly unhinged our world appears to be.
From the standpoint of major releases, strong underground releases, and a growing range of different sounds and aesthetics, I would argue that 2022 could go up against any of the greatest years in the history of rap music.  The nostalgia factor will always hold court over recency bias whenever folks who claim to be in the know get into such conversations, but I think 2022 had something for everyone - and those somethings were at the highest level that each respective lane has to offer.  Now here at the midpoint of 2023, we have a year that is extremely shallow when it comes to noteworthy releases trickling down from household names that loom large over mainstream rap music, but instead there are a seemingly unlimited amount of under the radar gems washing up on our streaming shores on a weekly basis.  In 2023, if you want to hear the best rap album of the week, there’s a good chance that it won’t receive a shout-out from On Thin Ice’s New Music Friday post (but a HUGE s/o to CROWNTHEM and RapSurvivalGuide for digging deep every week, and not just catering to your own personal biases or whoever kisses your ass for a slice of that sweet, sweet Twitter Share pie...but I digress).  ;-)
For the past decade my musical tastes have shifted, grown, and sharpened, and while getting older has certainly played a factor, my own interests in rap music have expanded due in no small part to the names I mentioned above, as well as many others.  Thank you all for doing what you do every week, it takes discipline, a good ear, but above all else, a real passion for the music and artists that share their gifts with the world.  Staring down at the back half of the year (July already!?), I hope to continue to share the same love for the art form, and put at least a few folks on to dope songs or albums that they otherwise may have missed.
So for my “Best of 2023 so far”, I tried to do the following:  pick *some of* my favorite songs of the year, NOT IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER WHATSOEVER, choosing one song from each artist (not including features or producers, both could have multiple showcases within the list below), and trying to touch on all of the different styles of rap music that I love.

Cambridge Beer and Food Festival | Events in Cambridge in May 2023
Beer Festival in Cambridge:
A beer festival, or "beer fest" as it's known in the UK, celebrates the country's rich beer heritage. Traditional beer festivals last several days and showcase brews from dozens of brewers all around the United Kingdom and occasionally even further afield. Festival-goers can try a variety of beers, some of which are only available at the festival.
Beer festivals are enormous social gatherings where people can try new beers, meet new people, and enjoy the company of others while also enjoying food, music, and other entertainment.
Cambridge Beer and Food Festival:
Summer is here, and what comes to our mind when we think of outdoor activities and fun in Summer? We all have gone through a rough phase of COVID, and in the last few years, no one got to enjoy Summer festivals in Cambridge.
So, here we come with King's Weekend special Cambridge Beer and Food Festival from May 6th to 7th, 2023, 12 PM to 10 PM at the Brook Pub near Mill Road, Cambridge.
For the first time, Brook Pub will collaborate with ORENO Truck and TACO MAN Truck to serve you the finest Japanese, Mexican and Indian street food in the Brook Pub, Cambridge outdoor beer garden.

BROOK PUB STREET FOOD TRUCK:
What we call "Indian street food" is what you'll find for sale from sellers on the streets of India. Many people believe Indian street food to be among the world's most savoury and delectable cuisines.
Indian street food has been popular in India for centuries, and its popularity has only grown over time. There are a few reasons why Indian street food has become so popular:
Affordability: Indian street food is often much cheaper than dining in a restaurant, which makes it a more accessible option for locals and tourists alike.
Convenience: Street food vendors are often located in busy areas, making grabbing a quick bite while on the go easy.

ORENO TRUCK:
Oreno, which means "my" in Japanese, is a restaurant that focuses on kushiyaki and robatayaki grilling techniques using binchotan charcoal. Oreno's signature dish is kushiyaki, which consists of meat or vegetables skewered onto bamboo skewers and grilled over charcoal. Meat eaters can have chicken thighs, pork bellies, and striploin beef fillet, while vegetarians can select between king oyster mushrooms and soy wheat tofu.
In addition to enjoying kushiyaki as a snack with a drink, you can also try it as a main course in the form of a donburi, where you get twice as many skewers in a bowl of sticky rice.
Each skewer is hand-assembled, and the kushiyaki tare marinade doesn't include any wheat, dairy, eggs, or honey, so it's great for those on a gluten-free or vegan diet.
Kushiyaki is always topped with chopped spring onion and sesame seeds ​to complement the sweet and savoury tare sauce. You can drizzle your kushiyaki with sweet miso or wasabi mayonnaise for added flavour.
Among the items on our menu are:
Kushiyaki: It is charcoal-grilled skewers.
Robatayaki is a Japanese dish of seasoned beef and vegetables grilled over charcoal.
Sushi: Oreno's trademark rice seasoning, served on various sashimi, roll, nigiri, and maki preparations.
Poke Bowl: Seasoned sushi rice topped with vegetables to complement our kushiyaki, robatayaki, and sushi.
Everything we serve is homemade, including the seasonings and ingredients.
Orenos are delicious appetizers that are great for sharing. Your vegan and gluten customers will be overjoyed to see that you've thought of them.  
Oreno is a mobile food vendor that sets up shop at stands. We only need a place to cook our pre-made meals over our own LPG, which we will bring.
TACO MAN TRUCK:
Since August 2022, Tacoman has offered tacos and nachos from their beautiful 1971 Citron SWB van. Since then, you may find them shopping at various venues, including public gatherings. You can find them eVERY Tuesday at Thirsty in Cambridge for 'taco Tuesday, exclusive affairs, corporate outings, and even picture shoots. 
Beer and Food Fest Events:
When we talk about beer and food, we all want some fun activities to be included. So, Brook Pub has created some fun events in Cambridge in May 2023.
You can enjoy fun family games from 1 PM to 5 PM, food, and beer. We will also be serving 15-20 local beers to try over the weekend. For a good cause, we are organizing Mill road children's Society charity Tambola. It is time for the events to be enjoyed by you all.
All the trucks and the events will be held in the best beer garden at the Brook Pub, Cambridge. If you like fun with kids, this is the place to visit on May 6th and 7th for fun games and street food.

12/20 day 5: Modernity and Dis-Membering
i'm going to start off with an album recommendation again. i find that i have been more intentional about the music that i listen to this past year. i respond deeply to music and it has the power to guide and exacerbate the mood that i am in. before i recognized this i would feed into manic spirals with a bunch of sad music, but now that i am aware of it, i am able to set soundtracks for my life based on the mood i'm in or the mood i'd like to achieve. anyways, this is the album that felt right to listen to while doing the readings for today
since we're reflecting on spirituality in this course (especially Black and African) this felt like a good album to put on. kpop has burst into the mainstream in recent years and with it has come conversations about cultural appropriation and how kpop is just Black music and performance from the early 2000s turned up to an 11. because of this, and because kpop artists aren't always aware of this intellectual legacy, there have been some not so great and outright anti-Black moments in kpop but RM is a strong example of how to take inspiration from Black artistry without appropriating it or being disrespectful. if you take a look at the features on this album there are people like erykah badu, anderson paak and it is because RM really is about the culture. he is a lover of art and the meaning behind art and he does so in such a respectful way and i think he is a great role model for other kpop artists. the album was released recently and it is a meditation on his twenties which are drawing to a close. it's about his connection to art and color and community and growth and friendship and himself and it's just a great listen.
anyways, to the topic of the day! i really enjoyed today's readings, they were right up my alley as a historian so i found some comfortability in reading through them. penalizing vodou was a particularly powerful piece because it hits on a lot of important topics for me. the first is the demographic makeup of the gendarmerie (military personnel). you can tell a lot about a state's (in the macro sense) intentions by the way that they structure their institutions. for this force to consist of military leaders, enlisted, and just generally uninformed white dudes, we are able to clear that the United States' intentions were violent from the beginning. in the same way that police in the united states are instigators and make every situation more tense, we see the same thing happening in the united states' imperialistic endeavours. sending a cop to someone's house while they're having a manic episode isn't going to deescalate things with empathy and understanding, it's going to put the person on even higher alert. the same thing happens with the policing of religious practices. you wouldn't send a policemen to a church to make sure things are running smoothly, so why would you send a military man to a foreign nation if your intentions are not violent.
i thought it was interesting that the soldiers stationed in haiti prided themselves on supposedly being able to distinguish between ritual and secular drumming. this is, of course, an invisible enemy. in the same way that queerness or leftist thought does not have a phenotype, the cadence of drums can be any number of things in any number of situations. but an authority figure claiming that they can distinguish between the two allows for them to police with supposed legitimacy and there were almost assuredly cases where they raided a secular gathering that they interpreted as religious and vice versa.
i was more interested in part two of the chapter which described the material effects of such policing, and the ways in which practitioners of vodou got around the system. it made me think of this tik tok that i saw earlier

the video is a popular disabled creator stitching a video of a woman trying to get her tubes tied and being questioned about it by her doctor. the creator stitching the video goes on to lay out how much of the american healthcare system is based on eugenics and that if you're a black woman wanting to get your tubes tied, that if you just tell your doctors that your family has a history of disability that they will consent to the surgery so quickly. we see this same thing happening on haiti in this book. and this haitian tradition of gaming the system was by no means a new one, it is the same strategy that enslaved persons working in haiti used to subvert white surveillance far before things coalesced into the haitian revolution. but here i thought it was interesting that white authorities would seek out religious leaders for positions of power because of how much sway they already held in the community but then that pursuit of unearned access to a community got thrown back in their faces. chef's kiss. i think this also makes clear the complicated nature of social change. in this case, it was important that practitioners of vodou had people in the system as a stopgap and safety measure. even though the goal is liberation and a world in which they might practice without fear, it was important to have people in positions of power within the existing power structures so that they might protect while they worked towards a greater liberation.
midnight scenes got me thinking about my own place as a historian of gender. in the reading the author talks a lot about how vodou was, in part, what formed an evolving justification for white supremacy. "individually and collectively, public voodoo narratives evinced for white publics the primitive, oppositional blackness on which constructions of their own racial identities relied" (p. 769). this is not my first encounter with this type of idea, my mind is drawn to Edward Said's Orientalism, L. Heidenreich's Nepantla Squared, Kathleen Brown's Good Wives, Nasty Wenches, and Anxious Patriarchs, and Natalie Molina's Fit to be Citizens? which tell a similar story of othering. for in order to assert white supremacy, they have to denote something as less than and this has happened in so many ways across so many countries and ethnicities. Orientalism is about the creation of a "western" identity, Nepantla Squared is about the creation of whiteness and gender norms, Good Wives is about colonial gender hierarchies in which white women found themselves significantly higher on the totem pole than Black women (enslaved or otherwise), and Fit to be Citizens? is about the los angeles health department in the 19th century and the ways in which they decided what was a healthy body through violence against chinese, japanese, and mexican immigrants, and endemic indigenous people/californios. i appreciate this new piece of the puzzle and it has been this academic journey that has changed the way i position myself as a historian. when i first got to grad school i wanted to be a strictly transgender historian but when i unpack why i want to write about transgender people it is because i am in love with the ways in which they exhibit/feel/perform gender outside of the normative. but as i began to get more pieces of the puzzle, i began to realize that the ways in which non-white texans were racialized and used to create a normative ideas of gender against which 'proper' white masculinity and femininity could be constructed. there is complication with using anachronistic terms here, but "cisgender" Black and brown folks have been living non-normative gendered lives since the age of exploration and far before. i love each of the books mentioned above for similar reasons that i love transgender historical subjects and thus i have begun to view myself as more of a historian of gender rather than as a historian of transgender people.
sacred crimes was particularly powerful for me. i love the sound of music and i love performance and i think the exploration of what makes something a secularized performance rather than the real thing was so interesting. the line "sacred performance involves the rehearsal of function rather than form" stood out to me in particular. i think that is a really powerful line. this is kind of the artist's story in a sense. i am learning to research and write and paint so that i might create better art. i am interested in sharpening my ability to express the human condition. i am much less interested in crafting an empirically true (again, doesn't exist) and technically perfect thesis, and i am not interested in painting perfect replications of what i see in the world. i am interested in capturing the essence of these things and i am interested in the tools i need to more authentically capture such essences so that i am not just able to create one great thesis, but that i might go forward in life creating a multitude of things. i do not chase the next great intervention in the field of gender history, i chase the tools that will help me more authentically talk about my historical subjects, and in that pursuit i have created far more than i did when i was chiefly concerned with writing the next historical intervention.
"in folkloric renditions of these events...there is little incentive to improvise in an immediate, divinely inspired way. what happens instead is that the songs and dances are transcribed into rehearsed memory, usually becoming more static with each rendition" (p. 119). for me, art has become about making sure that i do not become static. when i paint i have a vision in mind, but i let my hand and the page guide where the painting goes. for i am not imitating something that i have seen before, even in my mind's eye, i am creating something new with the tools i have gathered. and each painting is a new tool or lesson that i might continue to iterate on in the next.

each of the songs that is performed here exists on record already. he spent years meticulously crafting each song, tweaking things to be just right so that he might release Glory Sound Prep and it might be as close to perfect as possible. but he doesn't play the songs here like they sound on the album he put out. each is an entirely new rendition of what were already sonically and musically and lyrically incredible songs. but jon has grown since he put those albums out. he has a bigger toolkit and has lived more life and experienced those emotions in new and beautiful ways. and so the music is familiar to those who have spent hundreds of hours listening to it, but he freestyles the arrangement, the pacing, all of it. and so his fans got to hear something that they knew, but in a new and powerful new way. this is by far the greatest concert that i have seen live or otherwise. and it relates so intimately to the lessons of sacred crimes. we can't remain static, we learn to paint or create music or write so that we can tap into the spiritual, not so that we can create an unattainable perfect piece of art.
