#WeAreAnusara - Day 1 - #FirstPrinciple #SetTheFoundationAndOpenToGrace #OpenToGrace ... It might seem like the First Principle is actually two principles, but it is not. “Set The Foundation” AND “Open To Grace” are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have heads without tails. You cannot have a one-sided coin. “Set The Foundation” creates the physical context for a yoga pose and “Open To Grace” creates a spiritual context. You can substitute other words for “Grace” if you’d like. Some of my favorites are “Spirit,” “The One,” “The Universe,” “Divine Energy,” or simply “something bigger than ourselves.” We open to something bigger in the yoga practice in a number of different ways; taking a deep breath, softening our hearts, remembering our intentions, closing our eyes, imagining possibilities, clearing our minds, taking our awareness inside, listening to the Universe, etc. I chose #childspose to represent “Open to Grace” because it is a humble pose in which I imagine myself bowing before the awesome power of the Universe and inviting her to dance with me in my practice. ... #yogaday #yogaguy #yogafit #yogafun #yogaplay #yogachallenge #yogainspiration #yogalife #yogalove #yogabody #yogapose #yogaeveryday #yogafam #yogadaily #yogacommunity #instayoga (at Los Angeles, California)

#WeAreAnusara - Day 3 - #ThirdPrinciple #ExpandingSpiral #InnerSpiral ... In the legs, Expanding Spiral and Inner Spiral refer to the same action. The rotation of the thighs is related to, but only part of, the spiral. The spiral is smaller near the feet and expands as it climbs up the legs towards the pelvis and into the lower back. You’ll usually hear the spiral cues relating to the thighs, hips, and low back, because that is where the expansion is the greatest. The thighs rotate inwards, hence “Inner Spiral.” And the legs and pelvis broaden or laterally expand apart, hence “Expanding Spiral.” ... Utkatasana (chair pose) is another posture where I find myself focusing on Inner/Expanding Spiral. The tops of my thighs turn in, my inner thighs move back (down towards the ground) and my upper legs, pelvis, and low back widen. Personally, I cannot overdo Inner Spiral. I have to focus on it to maintain it. It does not come easily or naturally in my body. It never has. But that is just me. Some of my students and teacher friends naturally Inner Spiral more easily. They can focus on other actions/principles in their practice. The Principles are Universal because everyone needs to do all of Principles in every pose. However, the level of effort and focus on the different Principles will vary from person to person. Anusara Yoga is NOT “cookie cutter” yoga. Everyone does not need the same thing. We all need the Universal Principles of Alignment, but we all need them in different amounts. ... Setting the Foundation, Muscular Energy, and Outer/Contracting Spiral are easy for me. They happen almost automatically. Open to Grace, Expanding Spiral, and Organic Energy are challenging. I can do them, but those actions do not come easily. Organic Energy grows and expands from the center outward, like a small seed sending its roots down and out into the Earth AND simultaneously growing branches and leaves up and out into the sky. #WeAreAnusara - Day 5 - #FifthPrinciple #OrganicEnergy ... Organic Energy is the action of stretching, lengthening, and expanding from the center outwards in all directions. Organic Energy (a) flows from the Focal Point out through the periphery of the pose, (b) expands the extremities out away from the midline, and (c) flows from the core lines out through the surface of the body. ... In this variation of #vasisthasana, I expand front the focal point (core of the pelvis) out through my feet, hands and head. I also expand from the midline of my body, rooting my arm and leg into the ground on one side, while stretching up towards the sky on the other. And most subtly, I expand from the core lines (bones) through the muscles and out through the skin. I take up as much space as possible, expanding my energy beyond the pose, imagining my spirit merging with The One Big Spirit. ... #WeAreAnusara - Day 2 - #SecondPrinciple #MuscularEnergy ... Muscular Energy is the contractive force of the yoga practice. It always moves inward. It stabilizes and strengthens poses. It keeps everything together. It keeps us safe. Muscular Energy draws inward in three ways: (1) Skin to muscle to bone. I call this “Compressive Muscular Energy”. A good example would be when you pull the skin of your belly into your abdominals and your abs in towards your spine. Or when you draw the skin to muscle to bone around your knee to stabilize it. (2) Lateral to medial, like when you isometrically squeeze your arms or legs towards the midline of a pose. (3) Periphery to core. Every pose has a focal point. Muscular Energy moves from the periphery of the pose to the focal point. I’ll write more about focal points in a separate post. ... In #ekapadabakasana #oneleggedcrowpose, I set the foundation and open to Grace. I keep that and then hug skin to muscle to bone in my entire body. Not enough to be tense, but enough to be strong and stable. I also focus on squeezing the midline with my forearms and legs. This gives me the power to float in this challenging pose! ... #WeAreAnusara - Day 4 - #FourthPrinciple #ContractingSpiral #OuterSpiral ... Activating Outer/Contracting Spiral in the legs results in several characteristic shifts in the body, including a decrease in lordosis in the lower back, the tailbone scooping down away from the sacrum and forward toward the pubis, and a contraction of the lower abdominals. Too much Outer Spiral will overpower the actions of Inner/Expanding Spiral and potentially prevent the femur heads from setting back into the center of the hip sockets and close off the back and floor of the pelvis. This could result in rounding and/or tightness in the low back and/or bind the hip flexors. The muscles that contribute to Outer Spiral are big and strong. The actions of Outer Spiral must be applied in a way that balances but does not overpower Inner Spiral. ... Outer Spiral must be applied carefully, but it can also be a very powerful force within the body and within a pose. In #ardhachandrasana, I focus on Outer Spiral in my standing leg. I tack my hip and outer thigh back toward my lifted foot and squeeze the glute underneath the top hip. This creates an outer rotation in the thigh, pulls the bottom hip under the top hip, stabilizes the hips, and helps to lift the top hip. Then I can stretch long in every direction! ... I saw several others choose half moon pose or a variation of it for Outer/Contracting Spiral. For me, it is a key element to making the pose full. ... I love this variation of tittibhasana (firefly pose) because it forces me to straighten my legs. No straight legs, no pose. Also, somebody once taught me that the secret to getting my butt off the ground is to squeeze my legs in towards each other. I don’t remember who gave me the tip because it was so long ago, but whoever it was, she was absolutely right. I am simultaneously squeezing my legs in (Muscular Energy) and extending from my hips out through my toes (Organic Energy). Want to learn more about different energy/actions in poses? Con el Corazón Abierto . Se dice que la práctica y los talentos (dones) toman forma en aquellos momentos que son necesarias, por lo general en aquellos momentos difíciles. . Como la leyenda de Hanuman, aquel Monito que era hijo del Viento y que no recordaba todos sus “súper poderes” a menos que sintiera un “llamado a Servir” al bien mayor y la situación lo ameritaba, entonces era capaz de recordarlos y sortear los desafíos con valentía y humildad. . .
