I watched the first episode of My Stand-In very late last night (or more like earlier this morning) and loved every bit of it (but had no brainpower to write something sensible about it, so here goes).

My thoughts so far:

I love that Up gets to play a dubious role (more so than his role in Step by Step). He’s such an ACTOR and I LOVE HIM.

Joe is a really sweet character. Perhaps a bit naive and a bit of an idiot. But who hasn’t been an idiot when crushing on someone? (Ming’s also an idiot when it comes to his crush, but in a different way…)

Joe’s home is really beautiful with the green everywhere and the yellow/orange/reddish tones in the background. Not to forget the "The Kiss" painting by Gustav Klimt! Not my personal favorite of Klimt’s works ("Goldfish" is my favorite), but I love a person who appreciates art! It made me love Joe even more.

Joe has my whole heart, but Ming has my fucking soul. (For an ice queen like me, my heart is frozen and half dead but my soul is not, so now you know where my true loyalties lie.) I need that bad father fucker to break Joe’s heart into a million little pieces (because we all know it’s happening anyway) and pay for it by crawling through hell, only to beg on his knees for forgiveness when he realizes Joe is actually back and then pay with his own blood when he tries his utmost to stitch Joe’s heart back together. (Or maybe something a little less dramatic? No, I want pain!)

It was an amazing start to this series. I can’t wait to see more of it. And more Ming. I'm a wee bit obsessed (I know, it's a me-problem, but I'm fine with it).

(Also, Ming's call at the beginning was him wanting to explain whatever went wrong between him and Joe, right? I'm sure that call will be revealed later on to be the "I wanted to tell you [whatever], but your phone died and then you fell off a cliff and I never got the chance to" or something. I'm sure Ming will suffer after that accident, and it will probably be well-deserved. I can't wait to see it.)

Crunchyroll’s subtitles for TGCF are genuinely giving me an aneurysm. From basic grammar mistakes, spelling errors, and weird sentence structure. To localization decisions that bamboozle me.

The decision to translate Hua Cheng calling Xie Lian “gege” into “dear brother” and/or “Lian” is a translation decision that makes me a wee bit grumpy. I get it, the majority of English audiences don’t know what “gege” means and the significance of it, but the impact of it does not come off as strongly. HC calling XL that shows the intimacy of their dynamic, that HC holds him in a pretty close regard.

So when the scene of HC calling XL “gege” in the gambling hall happens and the ghost citizens, SQX, and LQQ are shocked and confused by it, it just doesn’t come off as strongly. “Dear brother” does not hold the same intimacy and playfulness that “gege” has.

While not as serious, the decision to translate E-Ming into “The Deadly Scimitar” is so goofy dawg. The characters used for E-Ming don’t even translate to “The Deadly Scimitar”, if they wanted to give it a fully translated name they could’ve come up with something much cooler. E-Ming is literally just the sword’s name though…it’s like if they tried to call Xie Lian “Thankful Mercy” instead of just by his name.

I understand wanting to meet the needs of the local English audience, that they may not know words if they were transliterated, but there are times where transliteration is better than translation to keep the spirit and meaning of something. Viewers having to use google sometime won’t kill them.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN: UR THE... TOMATO SAUCE???

OK, so this post did a pretty pirouette and twirled its way back onto my dashboard once again after more than a month away. OP @vegasandhishedgehog had pointed out that the graphic text on Heart and Li Ming's t-shirts together seemed to be inexplicably telegraphing the cryptic message "Ur the... Tomato Sauce"... 🤔

This time around I couldn't help but look a bit more deeply into what it might mean, especially the intriguing "Tomato Sauce" on Li Ming's t-shirt. Based on what I've found, I think it is possible to read a bit of cheeky wordplay in the English words of this scene. 🤩 But first – a detour into linguistics and etymology is necessary.

There's a phenomenon that is sometimes seen in cross-cultural commerce – I don't know if it has a name, since I'm not trained in linguistics or anything of the sort – but whenever a hitherto unknown product or ingredient is introduced into a culture, locals will try to give it a name that resonates or sticks. And often that name will be along the lines of "this thing is the X country or foreign version of our more familiar local Y thing" (sorry for all the technical jargon here, hah! 😂).

You can see this in Southeast Asia: the Dutch may have been responsible for introducing many new food items to the Malay archipelago because a number of food items around the region are labeled "Dutch" even though they don't originate from the Netherlands.

The soursop fruit (originally from the tropical Americas and the Caribbean) is called durian belanda in Malay (meaning Dutch durian, because both fruits are spiky). In Malaysian Cantonese, potatoes are sometimes called ho laan syu (Holland tuber) and green beans ho laan dau (Holland beans), the latter echoing the way haricots verts are sometimes called French beans in English.

In Malay, turkeys are called ayam belanda (Dutch chicken), which nicely parallels the French word dinde – when turkeys were introduced to France, they were called (among other names) poulet d'Inde or chicken of India (possibly because India was seen as a source of exotic prized goods, or maybe because the birds, native to the Americas, were thought of as originating in the West Indies or les Indes occidentales). Poulet d'Inde eventually got shortened to just dinde though.

There's something similar going on with the tomato in Thailand. As its original homeland was the Americas, at some point in time it must have been a new and unnamed vegetable (botanically a fruit) when it first appeared in markets there.

So in Thai, tomatoes are called มะเขือเทศ (ma kheuua thaeht), and in keeping with the principle of adding some qualifier (that denotes external origins) to a local counterpart, the word เทศ (thaeht) means foreign or outlandish, while มะเขือ (ma kheuua) actually means EGGPLANT.

Thus the Thai word for tomato translates literally to foreign eggplant (or perhaps, outlandish eggplant).

For the text-savvy in this digital age (and that must surely include teens Heart and Li Ming), the eggplant emoji is laden with phallic innuendo (I'm not going into detail, but here's a visual 😂):

Remembering that in Thailand, Thai equivalents of weiner and wee-wee can sometimes be used as cutesy nicknames for boys (see this My School President write-up linked here, also Uncle Tong calling Junior กระจู๋ or gra juu in Bad Buddy Ep.11 [1I4] 10.38), it's possible to read the "Tomato" part of Li Ming's t-shirt – because of the outlandish eggplant reference – as a subjectively cute pet name along the same lines. Maybe the effect is meant to be something like: "You're a weird little weiner" (expressed with affection through Heart's loving eyes, mind you 💖).

Plus there's also the theme in Moonlight Chicken of young Li Ming growing into adulthood (despite Jim's constant efforts to infantilize him), while comfortably claiming his own sexuality in the process (and with Heart playing a pivotal role in this). Heart and Li Ming's t‑shirts pointing out the innuendo and imagery of the tomato/eggplant could also be a nod at that, with the outlandish definition of เทศ/thaeht suggesting that since Li Ming is gay, this eggplant/gra juu is not like most other ones (although he's not at all the exception in Moonlight Chicken! 😂).

Noting too that Li Ming is hyperfocused on escaping to the West, him being labeled Little Weiner of a Foreign Persuasion also does kind of fit. 😍

In this light, the word sauce just adds to the naughtiness of eggplant, while it also carries connotations of piquancy, sass and/or the essence or distillation of something.

And so the "Tomato Sauce" on Li Ming's t-shirt can possibly be read as symbolizing his indomitably feisty (gay) spirit, his faraway aspirations and his place in Heart's life as a cherished young boyfriend (worthy of a cutesy, if unspoken, pet name).

Am I over-analyzing again? Perhaps. But at the very least I think it's still a fun way of looking at Li Ming's t-shirt, and I wouldn't put it past Director Aof and screenwriter Best Kittisak Kongka to be playing with stuff like this. 🤩 They already did something similar with Li Ming's Sesame Street "Everything I Know I Learned On The Streets" t-shirt (see Ep.3 [4/4] 6.42), a metaphor for his uneasy juxtaposition at the amorphous line between childhood (represented by the kiddie vibes of Sesame Street) and incipient adulthood (as signaled by his streetwise self-confidence, gained independently perhaps from Jim). And there was also the wordplay around his "St. Rene" t-shirt (written up here).

Tagging @vegasandhishedgehog because you're the eagle-eyed OP who first noticed Heart and Li Ming's t-shirts, and as always @dribs-and-drabbles because you're foremost the one I think of whenever there's anything t-shirt related in BL! 😍

Do you have any good poetry book/chapbooks to recommend? I’m just starting out with poetry and I’m pretty intimidated 😅

Yes, definitely!

In my first few years of reading poetry regularly, some of my favourites were past lives future bodies by Kristin (K-ming) Chang, Soft Science by Franny Choi, and Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth by Warsan Shire. I also listened to a fair amount of performance poetry, which I feel is often quite accessible, so I'd read collections by spoken word poets too (Franny Choi as above and Olivia Gatwood's second collection, Life of the Party, were standouts at the time).

Some recent accessible reads for me were Grit by Silas Denver Melvin and Beast at Every Threshold by Natalie Wee. Wee's was one of my favourite collections of the year and it's going to stand up even when you know a lot about poetry craft, but it's not too difficult to understand even if you don't.

I'd also recommend short poetry that doesn't often pass the length of a page, but still works with poetic devices. Billy Collins is super popular in this space. I'd also put Maggie Smith and Mary Oliver in this category. But a favourite of mine was Dear Specimen by W. J. Herbert.

I hope you find something to enjoy in there. Also, don't shy away from audiobooks, especially when they're read by the poets themselves.

Mini Reviews: "They Cloned Tyrone" and "The Blackening"

Prom Night (1980): Well, this was very different than the remake. Sort of like Valentine and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It's definitely no Carrie or Halloween, despite teen Jamie Lee Curtis bringing her Scream Queen A-Game.

Those Lips, Those Eyes: College student (Tom Hulce) works as prop boy for a theater company, where he shadows the star (Frank Langella) and falls for a chorus girl (Glynnis O'Connor). Forgotten film that was a stepping stone before Hulce hit it big in Amadeus.

The Joy Luck Club: Generational trauma haunts Ming-Na Wen, her mother, and their friends. A must see if you haven't already.

Pee-Wee's Big Holiday: For those still grieving Paul Reubens, Netflix had a new Pee-Wee movie back in 2016, in which he has a bromance (or romance?) with Joe Manganiello and goes cross-country to go to his big birthday bash. Really silly and unfortunately there's no Tequila dance in this one. But I still liked watching it. I miss you, Pee-Wee.

Playmobil The Movie: If you loved The Lego Movie...this is NOT the movie for you. Seriously, it was so dumb.

The Last Duel: The main takeaway from this film is that men are terrible in any century.

They Cloned Tyrone: Finn, Electro, and Monica Rambeau all stumble onto a conspiracy plot in their neighborhood. No seriously, watch this movie on Netflix, it was fantastic. I especially loved how John Boyega plays straight man to Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris.

The Blackening: A great horror comedy that you should definitely watch if you haven't already.

The Beanie Bubble: Yes, I had a great deal many of Beanie Babies. Never knew that the head of Ty (Zach Galifianakis) was a low-down cheat while the women (Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan) all got screwed over during the Beanie Baby craze.

When I was a wee lass, about middle school, a show some of you may know called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out in 2012.

Now I was already sort of acquainted with the ninja turtles, but when I actually watched the show, my little mind blew like Mikey trying pizza for the first time.

I was also a gifted writer. I’m actually pretty talented at writing and letting words flow on a page, and I already had a VASTLY rich imagination. So naturally, I made a self-insert OC.

Now I decided I wanted to be close to the turtles so I made the OC their little sister. I was 11 at this time and they were 15, so she was 4 years younger than them.

Then I had to name this OC. I went through a variety of ideas, from Italian to a female renaissance painter to the French word for turtle (Tortue Marin) but eventually I decided since Yoshi is Japanese, he’ll have chosen a Japanese name. So I settled with Ming.

So I had an 11-year-old, blonde, blue-eyed, white OC named Ming.

Yeahhhhhh… I wasn’t great at names back then but moving along.

I think originally she WAS Asian, because I wanted her to be Splinter’s daughter. Then it was revealed KARAI was Splinter’s daughter, so I settled with adopted self-insert.

Buuuuut then I got bored.

It wasn’t enough for Ming to be just a ninja who was raised by mutants, no no no! I gave her powers. At first, just water powers. Then shapeshifting, then ALL the elements, then mainly fire and rock.

I also bounced around the idea for her “alter-ego” because, yknow, she was a superhero!

So, lame as it sounds, I basically took Cat Noir and Catwoman, without actually knowing either of them, and made CatGirl. Lame. But she dressed all in black and had a tail and claws. That was cool. She also had fangs.

THENNNNNNN I got bored again. This was about the time the 2016 Out Of The Shadows movie came out. By this time, I was head over heels in the franchise. I’d even made a best friend because of it, and shared my OC and fanfictions with her.

So I figured, since the turtles were 15 in the first movie, and the second came out only a year later, making them 16, Ming’s age was 11 in the first and 12 in the second. And I had made a special plan for when she turned 12.

(Spoilers, btw, for anybody following me on fanfiction.net (Starblood666) and hasn’t finished reading Little Sister, Secret Weapon)

I decided Ming would meet her true family. I was already playing with the idea of my father being the Devil which is a WHOLE other can of worms for a different day. So why shouldn’t Ming’s father be the Devil, too?

At first Ming was an only child with black hair and cat eyes in her demon form. Then it changed. I decided if the Devil had kids, his wife would, logically, be an angel. They would have to be permanently separated and of course, duh, they’d have twins!

At first it was, one twin would be an angel and the other a demon, but then it changed to both being demons. Ming’s twin brother was named Damien. (Of course. I’m so lame at names)

But that meant Ming couldn’t be her REAL name if she had a REAL family. So I started trying to think up a long pretty sounding name for a demon princess. I wanted Ming to be sorta in the middle so it was a nickname option. Damien still called her Ming.

At first it was Almingthea, but the L felt awful on the tongue and tbh, I sorta forgot that name for a couple months until it was fanfiction time again.

So I reinvented it to Amingethia. Long, random, pretty sounding, Ming in the middle, and the best part? If you googled those letters exactly that way, and turned off the “Did you mean…” nothing came up. It was an identity that felt like it was really and truly MINE.

But a long name isn’t enough without a translation. So I made one.

TRANSLATION

What does my name mean?

Ami means weak. Ingethia means powerless.

Amingethia means Weak and Powerless.
