I am now reliably informed that random anxiety can be a symptom of perimenopause. I have been having scattered symptoms over the last several months--sidebar, hot flashes are fucking WILD. I kept trying to figure out if my laptop was overheated, or if someone had the heat turned on in July and it was coming from a floor vent. They feel like an external source of heat (I've since heard it described as "like standing in front of an oven"). I haven't had that many so far; I don't even have perimenopause ~phenomena every single day. But my mom says that my age--I turn 45 in December--is around when she started having them, so it's about right.

For the blessedly unaware, perimenopause is an extra 4-10 year transitional period before actual menopause. It apparently consists of total nonsense. Phantom blasts of heat! Random cold sweats! Intense random itching (mine has been on my shins and IN MY INNER EAR??)! One day I felt hysterically pissed off for no reason, went outside for a mind-clearing walk and stomped it off for half an hour, then burst into tears. Like, imagine autistic overwhelm with the bonus panic of being in a small hot room closing in on you. It is definitely "thing I already experience, but Weird." There have been days where I have said, "I feel completely insane." When someone with a fine-tuned mental health treatment plan says "I feel insane," you know something is up. You know what someone who has bipolar II and long covid needs? NOT THIS.

I hadn't mentioned any of this yet because the symptoms were so scattered that I wasn't sure what it was, until I discussed it with two different doctors recently. But, as you may know, I haven't met a health condition in need of normalizing that I wasn't willing to run my mouth about, so here we are.

I’m having one of those days (more like three days running) where I feel intensely anxious, but I don’t know why, so now I’m anxious that there’s something I’ve forgotten that I should be anxious about. Yes, I have diagnoses that could account for this. BUT WHAT IF I FORGOT SOMETHING?

Medications I am taking for my current ordeal

Prednisone: Steroid. Reduces the inflammation of my herniated disc. Knocked out 99% of the pain. MVP. Mood elevation for a couple of weeks (wanted to deep clean the whole house), then it started to make me kind of mentally scattered and easily agitated. Spinal doctor discontinued it so I can have a Big Steroid in two weeks.

Tylenol: A good time. Helps pain a lot. Does more for me than actual opioids. Watch your liver.

Flexeril: Muscle relaxer. Will make you (me) groggy for days afterwards without actually doing much. Mostly made me not care that things hurt. Did keep me from deep-cleaning the house. It was that or a tranquilizer dart.

Meloxicam: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Leg is a little fussy but 90% of the pain is at bay. Makes me loopy and kind of groggy but it’s only for two weeks. Acceptable.

Tizanidine: Muscle relaxer. No perceptible benefit, feels like being drunk, makes me post about politics. Discontinuing immediately.
