It’s funny I haven’t actually heard the song torture poets dept but kept reading from karlie’s POV. So I read the lyrics and woah thinking immediately yeah that’s karlie alright. Fashion fan of karlie’s since beginning of her career on the circuit. So I can see it.

One other thing…we keep talking about Taylor and the industry but what about karlie and the fashion industry. People don’t realize as soon as they got together (plus kissgate) karlie got the very lucrative L’Oreal Paris contract and they were known for closeting their models. I wonder if some of the songs aren’t referring to both industries. Men were frequently going to VS looking for beards too. Karlie as the top HIGH FASHION model had quite a few contracts.

I think they both suffered in those respects.

Donnie is streaming. His model is dressed in black tech pants with glowing purple circuitry details, a purple zip up hoodie that is worn open, and a purple visor over his eyes in place of his goggles. He has some hard light screens floating around him. Shelldon has a bandana with pins representing each of the family members. Donnie is playing Pokémon Violet.

Donnie: So recently I was reminded of an incident that happened a few years age, and oh sweet banana pancakes was it quite a delicious bit of revenge. It might take a bit to explain so grab some snacks, and a drink. Smug Laugh.

Chat is going nuts about new lore being willingly given.

Donnie: Okay to start I used to have a bit of a rivalry with a high school tech club, they started it first I just finished it, anyway at some point the original 3 members realized some stupid stuff they did might catch up to them, and came to me for a bit of help.

Chat is questioning what the stupid stuff was, and the actual legality of this story.

Donnie: The leader, let's call her K, wanted to collaborate on a project, something about it looking better on her College/University applications, well the project didn't leave the blueprints Phase, but we agreed to split the patent ownership between us.

Donnie looks a bit proud, though pauses because he spots a Shiny he wants.

Donnie: Sorry for the interruption, anyway at some point they got some new members that took over and kick the original 3 out, with barely any time to get their stuff out so the new guys wouldn't claim it. Anyway the real point of the story happens a number of months later.

Donnie readjusts how he's sitting, and gains a very smug look.

Donnie: So there was a, pretty big for the area, science and engineering fair that the new members joined. Likely to make a name for themselves, not that they didn't still look like a crappy off brand with poor quality tech. Well they entered a very unique machine, and it was impressing alot of people, they were about to get some kind of prize...

Shelldon: But the dum-dums made a mondo mistake, and wiped out of the fair!

Donnie: That's correct, K was also at the event, and presented the patent for the machine to the judges. The knock off tech club copied the blueprints, and tried to pass it as their own. And got into some legal trouble!! Triumphant Laughter!!

Chat was filled with mixed reactions, and some wondering if this could narrow down their search on where they live.

Donnie: I let K have the payout from the legal stuff, she kind of needed it more than me. If anyone's going to ask the original 3 work part time in the same company as me, just until the student dept is settled, then they might seek out other companies.

Chat is once again mixed, because they want more information, like why did they have a rivalry, was K a potential love interest! None of the questions were answered, though Donnie did make a slightly grossed out face at the love interest questions.

i’d be thrilled to talk about bellatrix and rodolphus!! i’ve been obsessing over them thank you so much for asking 🫶

in some ways (and i really cannot emphasise enough that this is just in some ways) rodolphus can kinda act as the man that sirius should've/could've/would've become if he hadn't rebelled/run away/generally not been that person. which is obvs compellling to me as someone who never stops thinking about the bella & sirius dynamic

he’s an older brother, he’s an heir (who then goes on to become a lord), he’s loyal to his family and the dark lord in a similar way to how sirius is loyal to his chosen family. personality-wise there are obvs a lot of differences and also, like i said yesterday, the lestranges to me are fundamentally Normal in a way the blacks aren’t, but it still interests me that bella would end up marrying this man who sort of acts as an example of what sirius could’ve been if he were ‘better’

(as an aside: i think we should mention that the lestrange brothers run parallel to the black brothers in some ways in that they act as what the black brothers could’ve been. model pureblood supremacists, fulfilling the roles that were set out for them at birth - this is what reg tries to do but sirius leaving throws it all off-kilter. and also the fact that they’re blacks amps up the intensity of everything they do at least tenfold but anyway. back to the matter at hand.)

a big part of the bella & sirius relationship to me is the envy bella has for the fact that sirius gets to be the heir, and have that power and that authority behind him (and i won’t say too much bc i go into this a bit more in the bella killing sirius microfic i posted the other day) so w rodolphus its interesting to me bc he goes on to become the lord that sirius could’ve been (and obvs it’s different and the lestranges have less prestige than the blacks but there’s still a lot of weight behind the lordship i think) and for bella he can kinda be a bit of a replacement; he’s so much less than sirius is some ways but so much more than him in others.

the power dynamics w bella and rodo are what intrigue me the most bc he’s obvs the Man of the House, he takes his role as heir/lord very seriously, he’s powerful and he has power over her in that sense. but then she’s a black, and even if she’s a woman, rodolphus is still marrying up in the same way that lucius is w narcissa. and then also obvs, at least in the second war (which also would’ve coincided w rodolphus losing his ability to really act as lord lestrange due to being, yk, a wanted criminal), bella is voldemort’s right hand man. she has superiority and authority over him within the realm of the death eaters. she can rise above him in a way that she never really could w sirius. (drives me insane)

but even w this multi-layered power dynamic between them i still think they have a fairly functional relationship even in its dysfunctionality. like to me its an arranged marriage, or maybe in an ideal world a kind of lavender marriage, so there’s never any real romantic love between them, i don’t even think they’re necessarily friends in canon (although if we’re talking non-canon i do often like to make them besties. i think they can be so special).

like to me they spend most of their time arguing, they’re ruining half of lestrange manor, breaking countless, priceless artefacts, at least once a week in duels. they’re bickering at every death eater meeting (they would bicker at the breakfast table but after a couple months of marriage they stopped eating meals together bc it would just get too destructive). they’re always fighting and always attacking each other….

but at the same time. for example in ootp, the dept. of mysteries battle, they’re paired up to fight together. and they also obvs go (w rab and barty in tow) to torture the longbottoms, so they can clearly work well together in battle and their loyalty to the dark lord is never something that they disagree on. bella joins through him, as i’ve mentioned before, and then i think does ultimately get sucked in further bc she started off on shakier ground first of all, but she also doesn’t have that other duty, the lordship, to ground her a little (and this is obvs gone by the second war anyway) so when she joins she dives in headfirst and takes the death eaters by storm or whatever.

i also think that rodo cares quite a lot about his reputation, not so much in terms of him being super polite and adored by everyone, but in the sense of respectability and being proper and behaving correctly in public. and this, first of all, would’ve led to a lot of fights w bella bc she doesn’t care so much at all about behaving, but also would’ve led imo to rodo defending bella against anyone who might talk badly about her (which ties into the whole rodolhov thing, w antonin always bringing bella up).

it would’ve led also, to some extent, to bella defending rodo against anyone who might talk badly about him. bc bella is always Always loyal to her family (another way she’s similar to sirius and also rodolphus) and to me at that point it’s mainly just narcissa left in her family (maybe reg too but i don’t think she ever really gave him much time aside from trying to teach him how to properly be a good death eater) and narcissa was already pulling away by the middle/end of the first war so all bella really had left in terms of Family, would’ve been rodolphus, so she too would’ve started fights over him i think (she also would’ve probs started fights over quite a lot of things anyway tbf)

The contemporary “debate” (if one can call it that) surrounding the biology of sex suffers from a lack of intellectual seriousness on one side. The arguments forwarded by those insisting on the non-binary nature of sex often demonstrate a rudimentary understanding of basic biology, or are so comically nonsensical that one wonders whether they’re even worth responding to. Academic biologists engaging with gender activists’ arguments for the so-called “sex spectrum” are like mathematicians engaging with numerologists (individuals who believe in a mystical relationship between numbers and coinciding events) or geologists debating Flat Earthers. However, given that sex pseudoscience has somehow taken over academia, serious scholars now find themselves compelled to engage with the absurd.

One such example is the bizarre suggestion that because some fish can literally change sex during their lifetime, then perhaps humans can too. This idea, while absurd on its face, is far from fringe. It has been given credence by popular science outlets like Scientific American, which highlighted the sex-changing abilities of clown fish “to emphasize the diversity of ways in which sexual beings move through the world.” Even the United Kingdom’s national library posted (and later deleted) a thread on X during Pride Month last year about the sex-changing abilities of the Māori wrasse, and Greenpeace made a similar move in 2021.

What relevance does LGBTQ+ Pride Month have to sex-changing fish unless there’s an intention to suggest that these examples illuminate the potential for sex changes in humans? But if activists insist on making such far-fetched comparisons, they should be challenged to follow their logic to its ultimate conclusion.

Let’s be honest, animals do a lot of weird things. They enslave other animals, eat their offspring, cannibalize their lovers, kill their newborn twin sisters, and devour their siblings in the womb. Do any of these activists want to justify slavery or embryonic cannibalism because animals do it? Probably not. But it’s equally silly to claim that we can derive grand lessons about human biology and sexual behavior from animals. Male octopuses, for instance, grab a packet of their own sperm with one of their tentacles, shove inside a female’s mantle cavity, and drop it next to her oviduct. This hardly seems like a behavior humans should try to emulate. Are there any objections? Why, then, would we think that fish sexual biology is a better model for us humans than that of octopuses?

What’s more, it frustrates me that those who continuously discuss sex changes in fish don’t get the fish-sex story straight in the first place. In reality, sex changes among the roughly 20 families and seven orders of teleost fish are driven by physiological and hormonal events that are triggered—depending on the species—by factors such as body size, perceived social status, or (in the monogamous clown fish Amphiprioninae) the disappearance of the large, breeding female. It’s also the case that those big, newly minted, dominant female clown fish are viciously aggressive to any fish they do not recognize as part of their group. So, if we’re taking our cues from clown fish, let’s not be hypocritical—let’s go all the way and demand that only extremely large, dominant, hyper-monogamous people who are particularly xenophobic should consider a sex change, and only after all the other females in the neighborhood have vanished. Does that sound reasonable? (I trust you realize I am being facetious here)

It should go without saying, but it appears that some still need a reminder: people are not fish. Fish live in the water. People live on land. When it comes to sex and reproduction, this makes all the difference in the world. In aquatic environments, you can simply release your gametes (eggs and sperm) into the water and let them drift around until they hook up. That’s because, in water, they won’t dry out and die. And neither will your embryos because they’ll be in the water, too. This is why so many fish can produce eggs or sperm at different times in their lives. It doesn’t take any specialized external organs to squirt gametes into the water, just a gonad for gamete production and an orifice for release.

However, the whole situation changes if you live on dry land. As mammals evolved for terrestrial life, they had to acquire adaptations—both structural and behavioral—to prevent their gametes and embryos from drying out. You can’t simply drop your sperms and eggs on the ground and hope for the best. So, male terrestrial animals evolved specialized external body parts for transferring sperm directly into females, who, in turn, have evolved body parts designed for receiving sperm and a chamber for nurturing the developing embryo until it is ready for life on dry land. Additionally—and equally important—both males and females evolved complementary neuromuscular behavioral patterns that allow them to court and mate successfully.

That’s why terrestrial mammals can’t change sex like some fish do. Such a transformation would require females to spontaneously sprout some kind of tube for internal sperm delivery, and males would need to somehow develop a complementary orifice. Moreover—and more importantly—both males and females would need to develop all the necessary internal parts and “plumbing” to make these external structures functional. It’s insufficient to merely alter the appearance of external structures, which can be done surgically (even on pets). A terrestrial animal transitioning from a female to a male would also require developing a complex duct system linking the gonads to the external tube, along with glands to secrete a carrying fluid and nutrients for the sperm (i.e., the Wolffian duct system, prostate, and bulbourethral glands). Going from male to female would involve developing some kind of organ to catch the eggs when they get released into the abdominal cavity, retain them until they encounter sperm, and then house the resulting embryo while it develops (these are derivatives of the Müllerian duct system).

Obviously, none of this could happen. When it comes to mammals, the die is cast prenatally. So, whatever fish do is their business and has absolutely nothing to do with terrestrial mammals. So, let’s drop the clown fish and Asian sheepshead wrasse analogies. Anybody who brings them up simply doesn’t understand evolutionary biology. It is futile to engage in discussions based on such analogies unless, of course, you’re one of those people who think that because some animals reproduce parthenogenically, humans should simply stop having sex altogether and hope for the best.

I want to make it clear that I have a deep understanding and empathy for those of us, including myself, who do not fit the popular stereotypes of any category or group. Throughout my life, I have received what seems to be an unrelenting stream of criticism for the fact that I was never (and still am not) perceived as representative of the norm (whatever that is). Consequently, I grew up defending those who were similarly targeted, and I believe that each of us should be continually mindful and accepting of the rich diversity of the human condition. Each of us should actively and consciously strive to be as compassionate, accepting, supportive, and inclusive as possible.

However, doing so does not require us to abandon reason, turn our backs on biology, or unhinge ourselves from reality.

I’m interested in a “ trad life “ and would love to be a homemaker and stay at home mum but When I have children I don’t want them to be feel like their life has to be like mine you know? First: I'm so deeply sorry. Your ask is sitting in my inbox since forever. I'm so so sorry! Second: YES! I truly think it is. You will treat your kids differently - and this is totally normal and okay. Their personalities! Just like everyone else. As long as you don't force them to be a certain way - treat them as differently as necressary to raise them loved. I'm living a "traditional marriage" and this is my way. I had never really modeled it to me. My mom was a Stay at Home Mom of four children - than my parents divorced and she ended up with a massive amount of dept; my uncoperated father that acted like we never existed and constant trouble, because she was out of the Job for nearly eleven years! So being a Mother and Housewife was never really "teached"? to me. If you want to say so. But here I am. Because I knew early on, that this is what I really want! Like, really really really want. From Kindergarten Age on. When I ask my kids, what they want to be when they adults - I never put them down for their answers. I never say "that won't work", "Your not talent enough for this", "Your grades are not good enough for that" etc. I encourage it! "You want to be a Vet if you're an Adult? Great. Go for it. ou need to do good in School and than go to school longer for that. But if this is what you want, than I'm sure you can achive it." I don't think that growing up with Mom Home and Dad working is installing any pressure in your child, simply by growing up like this. Pressure is on your child, if you ENCOURAGE it to live the same way. My husband grew up catholic - he left church as early as possible. And if they come and ask, if this is the way to live or something. Just say something like "It is for me. For others maybe not. Maybe not even for you. And that's okay. Think about how boring it would be if we would all live the same". So they knew, that you stay with them trough their Live choices - and than activly do so! I wish you all the best! So this is the oc me and a friend ship w hers so I might need to explain hers as well

Briar Sawyer is the head of the technology dept. at Myers way WAY b4 this back in high-school is where he met Ajax Morningstar, they bonded in their 2nd year of high-school through the photography club Ajax was in and Briar volunteered to model for. They lost contact when Briar went off to RMU for a medical degree, Ajax went to a bartending trade school and inherited his fathers brewing company (my friend decided that Ajax was the owner of Victor's fav bar and was the barkeep most of the time) Briar was enjoying his time at college but in his second year he got into a terrible accident causing him to need a prosthetic for both his left arm and leg (smth smth bomb smth smth explosion.) He decided to switch his majors after to engineering after that bc he gained a phobia of corpses and he felt "inspired by Myers," graduating in 2067 and going off to Myers immediately, Ajax also got the bar around this time.

Briar slowly climbed up the ranks in Myers over the 10 years b4 Vincent and Victor graduated. Since he had experience in the medical field, created his own "digital assistant" from scratch and was "very loyal to the company" Myers decided to let him in on the cyborg stuff and Briar became the main surgeon for actually making the cyborgs out of force. Ofc Briar absolutely hates his job and after rekindling his friendship w Ajax he goes to the bar often just to ramble about his job (and to see a particular bartender). After seeing victor there once Briar and Ajax start grown man gossiping about what vic and Vince were up too bc Ajax was working when they had their their RMU date and Briar worked with the two. Because of the gossiping Briar personally handcrafted Victor's prosthetics after hearing what happened to him.

Ofc the time comes where the whole car accident happens and Briar couldn't physically "operate" on on him, even though Vincent might not be that close to Briar, only acquaintances. After watching Victor and Vincent's supposed relationship grow from a distance over the years all he could think about was how Victor would react. Since Vincent was wide awake he apologized for what would happen and told him that he would tell victor before handing the operation job to another employee (possibly Winston) and leaving for the bar to speak to Ajax. Crying and pouring his heart out at the bar. Briar was a rather tall and intimidating man with all of the burn scaring from the explosion, he showed less emotion then Vincent does so it's very odd to find him weeping. Poor Victor just so happened to be at the bar that day to witness Briars breakdown, he had an off day and decided to visit his favorite bar. Victor had worked closely with Briar on multiple occasions due too how much the robotic materials and supplies the company needed cost and he hadn't seen not even a speck of emotion come out of him.

Briar couldn't bear to look at Victor because he knew what was happening to Vincent, he was too choked up at the time to tell him only able to choke out three words "Vincent, danger, basement" very Cryptic ik. Victor didn't believe him at the time as they weren't to close and he thought "why would Myers do that to the lawyer that just saved them?" But Briars words stuck with him and the state that his coworker was in for that matter. Around a week later, Briar hasn't shown up to work and Vincent was still no where to be seen, not even in hospice.

Briar showed up at the door of Vincent and Victor's mansion, learning that they lived together from Ajax's gossiping. Victor was hesitant to let him in but considering Briars absence and everything else, he decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and let him in to talk. Briar ended up spilling everything to victor, Vincent's disappearance, his involvement in the cyborg incident and everything that was happening in Myers.

Victor did *not* take it well and was very angry at Briar, though he was glad that Briar stepped out instead of operating on Vincent Briar had told him that the job was given to another employee instead of dropped because "you know how Myers is." he told Victor that he regrets everything he did for the company, telling him everything from his accident in college to gossiping with the bartender about him and Vincent. Victor wanted to do something to help Vincent but Briar tells him that if the process was interrupted now Vincent would certainly become a mindless cyborg or worse he could die without the possibility of being saved due to his current condition and that it would be better to wait for the process to be finished. Briar promises Victor that he would help with Vincent's recovery post process even though Vincent would certainly hate him.

One of the many many bad parts of project 2025 that isn’t being discussed very much is the current right wing plan for education. And as someone currently studying for a PhD in education policy this part is close to my heart

basically, they want to slowly downgrade the department of education until it does nothing but gather statistics and data. they want to end the phenomenon of education as a basic common good, and they want to create a private system which conducts right-wing, white supremacist, christo-fascist propaganda.

is your kid queer or trans? Disabled? Mentally ill or neurodivergent? Someone who speaks English as a second language? Someone who isn’t Christian? Someone who isn’t white? From a working class family? Sorry, education is not for them. Maybe if you’re lucky they’ll get a voucher to attend the pat robertson school of bullshit; of course, that scholarship was paid for with taxpayer money, so you’re ultimately the one paying for it after all.

Public schools in America are not perfect, not by a long shot. But widespread right wing resistance to public schooling is not because they are genuinely concerned with the many things needed to do to better support students, esp all the groups I just mentioned above. It’s because they fear they’ve lost the war of public information and know that the only way they can keep their viewpoint being seen with legitimacy is through indoctrination.

This isn’t new, per se, but the more recent step that they have managed is not just to go out of their way to mold public schools into places of right wing christian fascism like having the Ten Commandments on display, but using money from the dept of education which could go to improving public schools to fund these “voucher” programs, where parents/guardians can use vouchers to send their kids to private schools. Not only does it cost an outrageous amount of money (Arizona is flat near broke thanks to their voucher and charter policies), but research has shown that most vouchers are being used to pay tuition for kids who were already in private schools, and are mostly being used in wealthier families. I know, shocker

And the thing is, gutting the department of education is just one of the many many horrific things that lie inside of project 2025.

So I had a dream the other night that I was an extra in OFMD season 3 and honestly I'm manifesting lol

Some things I remember:

- I was an extra in Ned Lowes old crew, so they were back in as characters

- There were some christian missionaries and members of a leper colony at one point (dreams idk- though not like OFMD has ever been historicallt accurate)

- There was a fairy and some models of Stede in the props dept that showed him as stood next to and the size of a daisy- I'm guessing an ep featuring a trip on rhino horn 😂

- Obvs there was a gentlebeard/blackbonnet wedding. I didn't see what Ed was wearing but Stede was wearing the frilly turquoise coat from season 1

- One scene featured the Swede and Black Pete going around other pirate crews (including Ned Lowes ex crew) and people at Spanish Jackie's handing out hand written invites to the wedding only there was a section at the bottom where it said "we can accommodate X many guests at our Inn for after" except the number had been repeatedly crossed out and made smaller as they clearly realised they were just not going to fix the place up anytime soon 😂

h\Hey Taylor! I always see you post about university and such, and I was just wondering what all you do? I know you're studying biology, but you talk about some other things too. I was also wondering if you had any tips? I'm also studying biology but I'm a few years behind you. All the best!

Okay so this semester I'm taking orgo, ecology, advanced micro (which is just 6 hours of lab and no lecture), and cognitive neuroscience, as well as doing independent research with the worms I was working with over the summer <3 I'm also the TA for one of the intro biology classes at my school, and I'm a tutor, so I tutor all of the intro bio, intro chem, calc 1 and a little 2, pretty much all of the psych classes I've taken, stats, and a few of the lit classes I've taken. That's about 9 hours a week, and it's a service through the uni so they just book an appointment and tell me which class they need :) I'm also the main tutor for both of our intro bio classes (intro molecular and organismal), so I do a twice-weekly remedial "lecture" for an hour. i am. so fucking busy lol OH AND ALSO the chair of the psych dept just asked me to be on their hiring committee because they're trying to get a neuropsych person in, and he was talking to my research supervisor abt how she stole me from the psych dept, and wanted my input on the new hire so they don't keep loosing every single person with an interest in neuro to the bio dept since my school doesn't have a real neuro major.

as for tips...vocab is your best friend. even if you don't know what's going on, look at the prefixes, suffixes, etc because they'll tell you!!! learn them!! for example, anything with -ase at the end is most likely an enzyme....and enzymes are proteins that help catalyze biochemical reactions. so if you see the word "lactase" and you had no clue what that was, you know off the bat it's probably an enzyme (-ase), and if you can see that 'lact' is the root of lactose....well, you can logic your way to the fact that lactase helps you break down lactose! know your vocab I literally cannot stress it enough. also ESPECIALLY for chem when you get passed gen chem. the words are there to tell you what the thing is....they're not random. they actually mean something.

literally go to lecture. even when you don't want to. get up and go. and don't be on your phone. don't try to take notes on your laptop, either. do it, bare minimum, with an iPad, but if you still get distracted by notifications then use a notebook. who cares if you're the only one...you'll also be the only one who can draw diagrams, models, chemical structures, etc. plus writing literally activates parts of your brain involved with memory retention while typing does not. don't use the laptop!!!

oh i also mean this in the nicest way possible, but don't do bio if you're not super into it. because you'll hate it and all of the effort you have to put in is going to make it feel like hell. and if you find yourself hating labs....i hate to break it to you but you probably shouldn't do bio because most of the jobs on the market involve bench work in some way, shape, or form, and if you can't sit through a 3 or 4 hour teaching lab you're probably going to want to die when you have to get a real job after you graduate. in my schedule right now I have 16 hours of lab a week, and I love every single minute of it.

ask for help! i can say this as a TA but genuinely everyone wants to see you do well. go bug your TAs and your profs and yeah you might feel like you're being annoying but who cares! you learn by asking questions so if you have them, ask them. i think all of my profs are so fucking sick of seeing my face, and yet I'm still in the dept way too often bugging them while they're in between classes and meetings lol

along the same lines...literally everything is about connections. go talk to your profs. even if it's not with questions. "oh, hey, I thought this part of the lecture was cool, could you maybe tell me some more about it?" things like that. after all if you want to go to grad school of whatever kind, they're the ones that are ultimately going to help you get their. they're how you get research opportunities, rec letters, maybe they even pull some strings to get you in classes that are full/you don't have prereqs for, etc if they like you enough! some of my profs ask me for input on their classes too. like my micro prof, who's my academic advisor. i had him for regular micro last semester, and I saw him while doing research over the summer and he had 3 or 4 ideas for our advanced micro lab class this semester. he asked me what I liked best....guess which project we're doing.

learn how to read papers. it's hard. you're gonna want to scream and cry and rip your hair out. you're not going to understand 90%+ of what they're saying when you start. highlight words you don't know and look them up. ask profs (yes. again. talk their ears off when they have time to listen to you) for tips because it really depends on the field, what you want to get out of the paper (i.e. are you looking for methodology to model, are you doing a follow up to their conclusions, do you need their results as background). I'm reading three papers right now and I understand nothing! it sucks it's hard as an undergrad. I want to yell but. I'm taking notes and trying to break the info down into smaller pieces and. i think it's working :)

oh my god SO sorry this took me a hundred years to get to! i got busy and lost track of this au…but it has been reborn in the form of my nanowrimo project LOL. you (and anyone/everyone) should continue to ask me about the pacific rim au please and thank you. so many things have changed since my first posts !!!!! 

also this ask did remind me that kuroken were going to be the scientists, which i had lowkey almost forgotten about when i restarted the fic on april 1, so ty ty ty for that. here’s some more about them and the jaegers under the cut ! 

kuroken: 

first off, they didn’t know each other before coming to work at the shatterdome together! the only people who knew each other before coming together in tokyo were iwaizumi and oikawa, the rest of the haikyuu characters involved have never met before. there will be no explanation for this

kenma was recruited in his first year of university because he was posting his theories and amateur research online and it caught the attention of people with resources who wanted to see if he could find anything if given access to more tech and info than his dorm room gamer setup 

turns out that yes, yes he can find things if given more resources. he’s the one who comes up with the theory about kaiju attack patterns and the increasing rate etc etc 

kuroo, for his part, became a researcher in the science dept after incessantly sending his findings to whoever he could get in contact with, knowing he was On To Something and needed resources to share it

kenma is one of the people he gave his research to (twitter besties!), and kenma invited him to the tokyo shatterdome to work together

turns out that working together is frustrating sometimes but they love nothing more than to constantly annoy each other <3 but they do respect each other’s work even if they don’t always agree on methods or conclusions 

ex. kuroo’s research was founded on samples he got from the black market; kenma’s research is all too theoretical for kuroo; etc etc

anyways daichi and suga now pilot a mark-3 together called raptor flight. i’m imagining something like saber athena, which is from uprising but who cares. i can do whatever i want 

most important features of raptor-2: fastest model to date, extremely acrobatic/dextrous/agile, equipped with ionic twinblades (she gets two swords <3 ) that can be synced/combined into one stronger weapon (are you seeing the references i am making. are you seeing them), and an n-16 particle charger (plasma cannon thing) 

i’ve decided that asahi is the main tech for raptor-2 (hey he’s still here! yay!). he was also the main designer and tech for daichi and his sister’s jaeger, ursa juliet, before his sister dies and the model is ripped apart

blue castle is going to be vaguely modeled after striker eureka 

trivia fun fact of the day: striker eureka was planned to be the main jaeger in the movie until they were like well actually this robot is too cold and arrogant appearing to be the hero robot. this is deeply funny to me and also why it is perfect for blue castle 

blue castle is a mark-2 and was an experimental design by two intern jaeger tech development scientists, hanamaki and matsukawa (who get promoted to active jaeger techs as soon as blue castle is successfully put into use) - as the years go on, this design becomes a pretty common basis to design off of for future models 

most important features: extremely strong, aerodynamic, stable, and agile, equipped with 4.211 brass knuckles (exactly what it sounds like) and assault mount 3.25 sting blades (two swords attached to arms), missile launcher mounted in the chest, and advanced displays in the conn-pod which allow them a 4-way view of their surroundings

also not unexpected, but worth saying: iwaizumi is on the left, oikawa on the right

I don't want to commit to translating Le Progres articles on a regular basis but as is everything in life, that is subject to change.

In which the prodigal child returns from the cold, remembers Lyon's win/loss record against Barcelona, disses Lyon's men's team, and confesses love and admiration for WoSo's favorite Bad Catholic.

It was basically a fan Q&A and anyone with a Le Progres subscription will be able to find their names; however I took out the fans' names because I just don't feel comfortable outing private information like that. (See, it's that easy to be a decent human being and respect someone's privacy!!! Who would have thought!!!!)

Selma Bacha: "My biggest strength is my instinct"

For one hour, the Olympique Lyonnais and French International left back talked with Le Progres readers with all the spontaneity and frankness we have come to expect from her. Without shying away from a single question. Her tenacious character, the difference in attendance for men's football compared to women's football, the support from her family, how she regards mental strength, her role models, her relationship with Wendie Renard... A Bacha with no filter!

[Fan]: Do you play any other sport apart from rugby?

I do a lot of boxing during preseason and when we're in preseason. It allows me to blow off steam. I also enjoy swimming, and because I'm such a competitor, I always have to swim against someone who swims professionally so I can improve and to improve my mental strength. I also go hiking even if I like it a little less. Ever since I was young, I really loved sports in general. In middle school, I did cross country. I wanted to do my middle school proud so I gave everything, and I finished third in the French Championship.

[Fan]: Did you play with the boys in the academy?

I started playing with the boys when I was five. I was recruited really quickly by Lyon when I was eight. But my parents got divorced at that time and I lived with my father and my brother, so I have certain male characteristics. But maybe that's what gave me my desire to win, the determination, how to be aggressive and not let anything go.

[Fan]: What would you say is the difference between men's football and women's football? The difference in attendance?

We do the same job, but female players don't bring in as much money as the men do. But we're seeing some progress, we see it with the French National Team where we often play in front of sold-out crowds. It's up to us to win over supporters, to make them proud and gain interest in us. I have a lot of confidence in that even if it's a little frustration to play the final of the Coupe de France or the Trophee des Championnes in front of a small crowd. That being said, then a game is at 9pm on a Sunday, I understand that's it is complicated for families.

[Fan]: Were you disappointed not to play the derby [against ASSE] at the Groupama Stadium?

I think I can speak for the team but we would prefer to play in front of a smaller crowd with a great atmosphere, which may have been lost if we played at the Groupama Stadium.

[Fan]: What is your best memory in the Champions League?

My first final in Kiev [Lyon beat Wolfsburg 4-1]. I wasn't even expecting to be on the team sheet and I went to the pregame meeting and I found myself starting at the age of 17. The atmosphere was incredible. Overseas, people are really interested in those types of events. Here in France, we're sleepwalking our way through it, even if after the [2019] World Cup a lot of people started to get more into women's football.

[Fan]: Other countries have overtaken women's football in France. What do you think about that?

It's not to put down our league because things were put in place and we were heard, so respect for that, but when there is a clash like Chelsea-Manchester City in England, it's hard to compete against. Discussions were had, I'm a bit young but Wendie Renard is taking part in them and things are starting to change. In July, professionalism was put in place, so it's moving forward. Slowly but surely.

[Fan]: What has been the most difficult thing in your career?

I integrated the professional group very quickly. I saw everything through rose tinted glasses at first. And when I was on the bench, I was asking the right questions of myself. I was talking with the physical fitness coach, the psychologist, the nutritionist, and I told myself I need to work twice as hard to achieve what I really wanted. I'm someone who is always very smiley and when I'm hurting, no one will know. I can internalize a lot but it will explode, I implode by myself and obviously, that's not good mentally. I have my parents, my team and my best friend, Alyssa Paljevic (former goalkeeper at Lyon), who is a shoulder to lean on. She doesn't judge me and she tells me if I'm wrong or not.

[Fan]: Are you properly supported in terms of mental health?

It depends on each individual. I often tell the youth to make sure to have a good support system. When I arrived at 16 [to the pro group], I wasn't paying a lot of attention to nutrition, to sleep, to recovery, the invisible part of training. I quickly understood you needed support and structure to achieve my objections, which are really high. When I go the [team] psychologist, it's because it helps me a lot mentally.

[Fan]: What qualities do you need to become professional?

Being good at football obviously. Beyond that, only hard work pays off. I give a lot of credit to the people working behind the scenes who put things in place for us. The invisible part of training is also really important. Beyond that, it comes down to having a lot of fun and confidence, you have to follow your instinct. Now it's my turn to ask if you want to be a professional football player? You'd like that? Right there, you can't say "I'd like to". You have to say "I want to" to send the right information to your brain and have confidence in yourself.

[Fan]: Have you stayed in contact with FC Gerland, the team you started with?

I'm the godmother of my former club which is still very dear to me. Last season, I was able to gift them jerseys thanks to my sponsor. Whenever I can go and give them advice, I do it without hesitation.

{Fan]: Do you play Fifa?

From what I'm told, apparently in the game, I'm expensive and a "cheat code"... Personally I don't really play, I prefer to relax.

[Fan]: Do you train in the morning and afternoon like the men's team?

Who told you the men's team train in the morning and afternoon? (laughter) We often have training in the morning, but sometimes we have double or even triple sessions when we come back from vacation. But yeah, we're like the men, we do the same job.

[Fan]: Do you interact with the men's team?

Yes, and besides that, once a year, during the gala for OL Foundation [Lyon charity], we're seated a table with investors and there's obviously a player from the men's team next to us. You might think they have big egos but when you get to know them, they're real softies. We see them in the cafeteria as well.

[Fan]: Was the transition post-Aulas easier for the women's team?

I don't know what's going on on their [men's team] end but from our end, Michele Kang came to see us, we had talks. We're not an easy team to handle but we're not complicated. (laughter)

[Fan]: Which players are your role model?

I'm a footballer but I don't watch a lot of football. The players who inspire, it's Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, because they're hard workers.

[Fan]: Have you recovered from your ankle injury in Australia?

My ankle doesn't bother me anymore otherwise I wouldn't be on the field, especially because I have a long season ahead and therefore we won't want to take any risks. But it's true the sprain was no joke. I had 10 days to recover. It didn't hurt at all during the World Cup even if it was swollen. I'm not a cheat: if I'm not 100 percent it's not worth putting me on the field. So yeah, my ankle is a little unstable since, it'll roll sometimes, I'll be in pain for 30 seconds up to a minute, but that's normal. Let's just say I played my joker. At Lyon there is all the necessary medical staff, I'm in good hands.

[Fan]: Does it help you to play in your hometown?

There are advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is I was born here, all my family is here and I'm really close to my family so I have a lot of support, that really helps me. But sometimes, you just want to be alone and that's not always an option.

[Fan]: What is your relationship like with Wendie [Renard]?

Wendie, she took me immediately under her wing as soon as I integrated the pro group. She knows the love and admiration I have for her. She's in my heart, she's a big sister for me who I can always count on. Our friendship goes beyond football. When things were going badly and I thought about quitting football, she really helped me. I owe an enormous amount to her.

[Fan]: Do you think you will change clubs in the upcoming years?

That's a good question! (laughter) I'm under contract with Lyon until 2025. I have incredibly strong feelings for this club, I grew up with them. For the moment, I'm good here, I live it day by day and for the moment, I'm not imagining myself elsewhere.

[Fan]: You wouldn't want to go to Barcelona?

Why would I choose Barcelona? (laughter) I'm not afraid to test myself in a new league. Each year, in my room, I take a blank piece of paper and write down my objectives. Last season [2021-2022], I wasn't expecting to be be the youngest player in the Champions League, have the most assists, be nominated to the Ballon d'Or... I couldn't believe it. But when you play for the team and you put the team first, the individual stats will follow by themselves.

[Fan]: Do you practice a lot shooting from afar?

Let's just say it's instinct. I have a very strong left foot. The assistant coach for the French National Team teases me a lot about that: he tells me I have a more powerful shot than certain male players but I need to put them on target (laughter), so I know what I have to improve on. I'd say that above all else, my strength, it's my instinct. I always follow it: if I have to take a shot, I'll shoot, if I have to get my teammate to score, I'll do it. I don't think just about me. I'd rather have an assist than score, even if scoring, it's a really special feeling.

[Fan]: Which team has the best style of play in your eyes?

Olympique Lyonnais (laughter). Otherwise I'd say Barcelona, because I am a player who likes ball possession and at the top level, the Spanish players are the best. I like to watch Barcelona.

[Fan]: Who was the best team you played against?

That's a good question. I'd say Chelsea and Barcelona.

[Fan]: And the best player according to you?

There are a lot. At the moment, I'd say Eugenie Le Sommer. Aitana Bonmati (Barcelona) as well, she's really good.

[Fan]: Do you chip in training?

Ball control, nutmeg, shooting, yes. But not really chips.

[Fan]: What is it like being an undisputed starter with the French National Team?

It's an honor! My team knows how much I struggled and all the tears I shed. Compared to other players, I integrated it a little later but I never gave up. There were nights when I was crying at home and I was thinking: "what am I missing?" And one day, when Lyon was at Issy-les-Moulineaux, I learnt that I would be called up because Sakina Karchaoui was injured. At first I couldn't believe it and I was even afraid the coach was pranking me. I screamed really loudly in the bus, everyone was really happy for me. Being at Clairefontaine, seeing the castle, it was a childhood dream. I'll never forget my first game against Kazakhstan, especially because I was a starter. And then I scored in my second game against Wales! I couldn't dream it any better. Now, my status has changed, but I'm not going to get a big head over it. I stay smiley, likable and I never forget where I came from. I want to keep my feet on the ground because it can all change so quickly.

{Fan]: How did you handle coming back from the World Cup?

That night, obviously I didn't sleep. But despite my missed penalty, I told myself that I gave everything and shouldn't have any regrets. Especially because I came into the tournament with an injury and had 10 days to recover from a big sprain. Afterwards? There was a long flight with a lot of sadness and frustration. I landed mid-morning in Lyon, I went to see my family and that afternoon, I went to Montpellier and then the next day to Marrakech. I turned my phone off and no one knew where I was. I needed a lot of time before I could talk about the World Cup.

[Fan]: What was missing for this World Cup?

Efficiency of course. We weren't able to impose our style of play and we were subjected to Australia's. Maybe we lacked a bit of bite as well. Ellie Carpenter, my Australian teammate, when she has one touch of the ball, she moves up 10 meters. When you foul a Brazilian player, they form a group around the referee to put pressure on her. When we had a team meeting about it, Kenza Dali actually called me out by name and said we needed to be more like me, aggressive. Of course you need to respect the referee and not waste energy for no reason when she has already made her decision, but in the quarterfinal of the World Cup, I think we can go talk to the ref. And not just in football. Look at rugby!

Hobbies are really important because when you have so much extra time on your hands, you just might be a victim of scrolling endlessly on tiktok, instagram, twitter and, youtube. Wonyoung has hobbies such as modeling, she plays the piano, flute and violin and she learned English and Japanese. . . . Yes, I and many have fallen into that constant cycle of being lazy and just laying on the couch, hair messy, clothes dirty with a can of coke-a-cola and a bag of chips, eating myself away. Yes when in the moment it feels nice and being to take a break from reality, but question yourself after the lazy moment "why did I do that?" Revisiting the “Junior’s Farm/Sally G” Photo Shoot 1974

In 1974 photographer Clive Arrowsmith took the photos for the cover sleeves of the Wings’ songs “Junior’s Farm” and “Sally G.” The photo shoot took place at Cromwell Mint Casino in London.

I’ve read that each band member is supposed to be a character from the “Junior’s Farm” song.

Paul, in his coveralls and hillbilly hat, is supposed to be a farmer, probably Junior, owner of the titular farm, who sings about everyone wanting to come to his place to lay low. Denny Laine is the Eskimo, bundled up in a parka. Jimmy McCulloch, seated in front of Denny the Eskimo, is presumably Ollie Hardy, the gambler who bought a gee-gee (a horse, particularly a race horse), while Geoff Britton, in visor and bow tie, completes the gambling theme as the poker dealer.

But who is Linda supposed to be?

There is the line “I had a honey and I bet a grand,” which can lead one to surmise that Linda is this “honey,” the girlfriend or sweetheart of the farmer, who makes him feel lucky enough to place large bets. If so, (1) that honey sure gets glammed up when she goes to the casino, 😂 and (2) she’s way above the farmer’s league. 😆 Then again, maybe a “honey” is just a good hand. 🤷‍♀️

She could be Lady Luck, a symbol of the temptation of gambling. This temptress dressed in black and holding a hand of cards may lead players to lose their money until they can barely afford groceries, and proceed to blame the government for their plight; and the next thing you know they’re conspiring to put the president in cement booties. 😳 (I don’t know how the Eskimo and his sea lion fit into this, though.)

Another possibility is that Linda is Sally G., transported to the milieu of Junior’s Farm. However, I pictured Sally as more the gingham dress type, a country girl blithely breaking guys’ hearts instead of the femme fatale she seems to be here. Then again, Sally could probably reinvent herself if she moved to the big city. She’s wearing heavy makeup as if to be seen from a distance, so I could see her being a singer in a Vegas-style casino.

What’s Your Cover Sleeve?

I’ve read that the casino-themed cover sleeve (1st picture in this blog post) was only used in Spain and that the other casino photos were used in advertisements elsewhere (though I don’t know in which countries).

In the UK and the US, the single was released in an Apple Records company sleeve. In some other countries in Europe, a black-and-white band photo was used instead. I’m guessing it was this one:

Linda’s Image Transformation

It’s interesting that the guys are all dressed to the neck and clad in long sleeves, but it’s the opposite for Linda. The marketing ploy of the time was to make the only girl in the band the eye candy.

By playing up her femininity and beauty she becomes a focal point to draw interest in the record.

So did the art dept. succumb to this rather sexist marketing trope? I don’t know if they did so consciously. The goal could have been fun and creativity, but Linda still got a complete makeover nonetheless.

So was Linda a bit exploited in this photo shoot?

She ended up answering her critics who complained she was too “plain Jane.” Good for her. I say THANK GOODNESS we have these photos so that superficial critics could see that Linda had beauty to spare.

I mean who knew that Linda had an hourglass figure? And such flawless skin? Or that she would look so good in makeup? Or that she could look as statuesque as a model?

I hope Linda had fun adopting a persona and upending expectations about her looks. She could certainly go “movie star” if she wanted to, but it wasn’t her style.

How did Linda acquit herself as the alluring beauty?

She was more convincing at acting the stunner than Paul was at acting poor. 😆 (LOL, but to be fair maybe Junior wasn’t a “poor” farmer; he might have done quite well for himself). 👨‍🌾

Let’s give Linda her due. For being a non-celebrity, she was a natural in front of the camera, especially as time progressed. She was adept at creating facial expressions, as seen in these pics from 1984:

But what everyone REALLY wants to know is HOW is Paul not STARING at Linda throughout the photo shoot?

After all, they’re practically newly weds (barely 5 years) and he’s always been besotted with her, and… well, it’s a figure hugging dress with a plunging neckline and spaghetti straps for goodness sake. What more reason does he need to gaze at her? That could have been a shot right out of a romance movie if only we had a pic.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any “behind-the-scenes” pics of this session online. 😩 😭 These may in fact be the only photos ever where the two of them aren’t touching. 🥺 Moreover — gasp! — they’re not even standing next to each other. 😱😳 Unnatural!

I don’t know the identity of the person giving the pinniped’s whiskers a pat. The animal’s minder from the zoo, I would guess. Maybe a gee-gee (horse) would have been less trouble. 😉 🐴
