1. Liquor Store on Mars by Kelsy Karter and the Heroines: Kelsy Karter has quickly become one of my favorite musicians. I really liked her before I saw her in concert, but seeing her live and experiencing her showmanship just made me appreciate her music more. Cannot recommend enough. (I hope there’s a liquor store waiting on Mars / with cheap cigarettes you can light with the stars / cause that’s how far I have to go to see you and not say hello)

2. Hayloft II by Mother Mother: This song got me into Mother Mother, it is such a fun banger I can’t get enough of it. When I first heard it I listened to it for days just so I could get the words right to sing along. (She crucifies (she crucifies), she crucifies (she crucifies) / Hey Pop! You die! You die!)

3. Useful Lies by San Fermin: This is probably my favorite on San Fermin’s newest album. It’s so sad and sung so gently, a song about an inevitable break up. (When you’d come home, there’d be less of you each time / The rest you kept somewhere I knew would not be mine)

4. Everything by Kehlani: The lyricism in this! The lyrics themselves are great with the rhyming scheme throughout, and it’s a love song with the singer just gushing about their partner. Cute to me. Ufff, this is really hard, I'm the type of person who sings all the time, so I have a lot of favorite song, but I guess this is my actual top, and not only because they are the 5, 6... 7? songs that I can't help but sing, but they make me feel very passionate when I do it:

5. No Longer You, from EPIC: The musical This is very recent! OMG, I haven't heard any other songs from the EPIC musical, but I like this song so much that I've stopped mid-conversations to sing it at the top of my lungs.

4. Bird Song, by Florence + The Machine, If U Stayed, by ZZ Ward and Hayloft (1 and 2), by Mother Mother I put all these songs in the same position because they have a musicalization that I really enjoy and I couldn't decide on just one, they just grab me when the chorus starts playing and they're all the kind of songs that, before I realize it, I'm singing along very intensely.

3. Genius Next Door, by Regina Spektor Everything about Regina Spektor makes me sing uncontrollably, I know a lot of her songs, but this is the song that I like the most by her, it's intriguing, mysterious and I recommend it 100%

2. The Moon Will Sing, by The Crane Wives I knew this song through the fanfic 'The Eldest Brother' (It's beautiful and I love it 😭) so the song not only makes me very passionate when I sing it, but it also makes me cry sometimes.

1. Achilles Come Down, by Gang of Youths Uff! Definitely my favorite song of all, I don't doubt this one bit. This song is extremely beautiful, the combination of cello and violin is hypnotizing, the lyrics are a beautiful and super impactful, as well as extremely personal for the singer. This song is the type of song that knocks me down and lifts me up at the same time. It's extremely charming and I absolutely in love with it, I highly recommend it 💖

Am I the only one who doesn't really like the new Mother Mother song? Ever since Inside Deluxe version came out with Hayloft 2 (and even a bit before that) there's been a change to their music that I'm not a big fan of. I feel like they've gone the Weezer route, the lyrics themselves used to portray how quirky, charming, and different they were but in their current songs they just spell that sentiment out for you instead of letting you infer it from the lyrics. ESPECIALLY with a new song thats basically just "look at how abnormal and out of the box we are", what made O My Heart so great was the same sentiment but it wasn't spelled out explicitly, the entirety of Eureka does the same exact thing as Normalize but way more effectively.

This isn't to say that the song is bad! Musically it's great but the lyrics on their newer songs and albums leave something to be desired that their past songs accomplished. The bridge or hook or whatever you want to call it is so grating on me, a word shouldn't lose its meaning because it gets repeated so many times in one song. Musically the song is great but it's also overproduced, I can hardly hear what they're even singing in the verses because of the mixing of audio and all the effects put over their voices. The music is good as I keep saying but it also sounds like 3 different songs smashed together and sometimes it works but other times it's like "what are you guys even doing here?" It goes from alt pop rock to horror soundtrack, I like the horror soundtrack vibes, I wished they leaned into that more.

And the part at 2:28 when Jasmin screams "Die!" sounds so awkward, it picks up pace so suddenly like it's going from a 25 all the way up to 100. I wouldn't mind that if it wasn't such a sharp jump from one part of the song to the other, it just doesn't really work. (Don't even get me started on the fact that they used the word "unalive" in this song. Tell me you're writing for a tiktok audience without telling me you are) It just feels like they went from writing songs for themselves, or people their age, to writing songs for teenagers going through puberty. They used to sound so real and relatable but it doesn't feel natural anymore. It feels to me like they're trying to capture the resurgence of success O My Heart had in 2020 with their new albums. We will never have another OMH because it already exists and they made it! I really liked the use of violins and horns in OMH because you don't hear that in many rock songs, I just wish their use of it in this song didn't sound like they were trying to make OMH 2 (like they did with a certain song off of OMH.....)

It feels to me like MM is trying to capture the past and live it differently this time rather than moving on with the future. One of their older albums that reminds me of OMH a lot is The Sticks and that still sounds different! A lot darker and more mysterious, I wish they'd reinvent themselves rather than reinvent the past. I'm still a fan of them and I always will be but I'll be a fan of them the way Weezer fans still like Weezer: I'll listen to stuff past Pinkerton but the first two albums are the best. Which album of MM's is their Pinkerton? That's debatable but most tracks off Dance and Cry are still a hit for me, Inside and beyond has me cringing a bit

If you disagree then please feel free to have a convo with me about it! I'd love to talk about MM in depth with someone else! I don't mean to say these things in a needlessly pessimistic way, when MCR came back from their hiatus they managed to make a song that sounded like their old songs while feeling fresh, creative, and new. I know MM could do that too, I'm not opposed to bands changing up their sound from album to album either, The Sticks, Eureka, and Touch Up are some of my favorite albums by them and they all sound so different from each other, the newer songs and albums just sound like most of the alt pop stuff playing on the radio. I don't want them to make a radio hit, I just want them to make songs I like again

Who knows, maybe the new album will come out and I'll change my mind but I have a feeling this will be like the release of Inside for me: all the good songs will be put out as singles

2023: An Author's Review

I've gotten in the habit (over the past 10+ years) of posting an author's review of what I've done on AO3. Since I started my Patreon, I've been posting it here and sharing across Tumblr and Twitter (*cough* I mean X? *cough*). I think it's good to take stock, be honest about what was possible and look and what I want for the next year. So here it is:

2023... I am not sure I'd say "astonishing" but it was a year of surprises (good and bad). It was a busy and chaotic year, but I really have been on a healing journey and both mentally and physically am much better than this time last year.

Hubs and made a temporary (planned for one year) move across the Atlantic in 2022 and came back to Ireland in July 2023. I was working part/full-time with research and grant writing, doing hands on clinical and remote parts. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, though it was much more sedentary than what I'm used to for a day's work. It's been rough coming back... the stress on the systems from the pandemic and (frankly) fucking conservatives ruining anything good has made remaining here untenable. After losing my FIL in the autumn and my own family having ongoing health scares, Hubs and I have decided to go back to the US in 2024... So... it's been a bit of a limbo.

Even with all the chaos of a move and work and... *gestures at everything* I did manage to accomplish a few things.

Summary of writing in 2023:

I set out with the goal of posting The Hayloft on a weekly posting schedule (without break) until complete. I'm SUPER proud of myself for managing that. It's >70k words and 38 chapters (with a 39th for ANs). Between the schedule, having 2 betas (thank you Paia and Sky), responding to comments, and the HTML bits of posting, it consumed a lot of my time (we won't mention that I finished writing it while posting)... But I'm very happy with the final product and with myself for keeping to the schedule.

In April, fresh out of 221B Con, I did a Mystrade Monday based on the prompt "Don't threaten me with a good time." It's a short one-shot, and lyric-based in title (Nod to Panic at the Disco) called Champagne, Cocaine, Gasoline. (because who doesn't want a damp Lestrade?)

So that brings us to May - when things started to get really busy as I prepped to move, and the Mystrade is Family collection, to which I submitted 2 fics. The first was in response to Paia sending me a tiktok: Mistakes Were Made (though not by me), tiktok is at the end of the fic. And I somewhat love Greg's much younger sister, Roxy. I also dipped back into the When You're Fast Asleep series with Think Happy Thoughts.

June and July were mental... packed up my life again, drove the length of the US, moved back to the other side of the Atlantic, moved BACK INTO my flat, repaired the car, resorted my jobs, lost my FIL, went back to the US for the funeral, went back to the US again for Thanksgiving. A lot of stress... not a lot of writing. But I did keep up with Hayloft posting and finished the end of September.

October, I took some of the nonsense in my real-life and the MRC server members' real-lives and made a fic strictly to name-shame people we met and or didn't like. Queue's Next was rather cathartic for that.

In November, I (finally) finished a fic for the RGBA for Lav. She'd asked for something in the Safety First/KKBB universe, and a pet... and we ended up with Blunderbuss. Because murder husbands needed an orange cat. And having dropped back into the Safety First universe, I added H is for Heel and I is for Industry Standards to the work.

Still a bit stuck in Safety First, I wrote a murder husbands Xmas fic with J is for Jingle Bells and put that up mid-December.

On Christmas Eve, I posted a soft short from the When You're Fast Asleep series called All Is Calm. The series really suits calm and warm drabble.

Because I was SO soft of Christmas Eve, I posted a SPICY short in Safety First on Christmas Day called K is for Knife's Edge. And just to round out the year, I dropped a New Year's Eve present with L is for Line of Sight. 

Overall, I published shy of 100k words (though, I only wrote about 70k... Hayloft was mostly written coming into 2023, but all of the posting was this year) with 16k hits and I now have 380 user subscriptions and 7000 bookmarks. It was a solid effort and I've spent the year only writing Mystrade -- though... I've expanded my reading ships (for this I blame BeautifulFiction).

Plan for 2024: Keep myself sane. I have another few chapters for Safety First in the works... there's something so very compelling about the murder husbands. I have 2 WIPs that are very nearly done and I just need to push through the last... 2k or so. So I hope to be putting those up in the first quarter. Be on the look out for The Marshmallow Experiment and Ambien Wife (though, those are both working titles). There’s a few bigger projects that I’ve back-burnered or have been plodding along with, including "the sad one" and "the Pretty Woman one" and some complex, multichapter things. Trello has been excellent this year to keep my bunnies sorted and in some sort of order.

13. song of purple summer. it's a beautiful epilogue and it's very dear to my heart. but the lyrics are just too steven sater for it to be higher. why r we talking about horses in the song about learning from our loss and experiencing a beautiful summer despite the hardships of spring

12. mirror blue night. i just love how deep this song cuts into melchior's internal conflict. it's musically interesting and is a perfect transition into the hayloft scene imo

11. mama who bore me. i cannot imagine spring awakening starting any other way. it's quiet and understated and paints a perfect picture of longing and uncertainty. i love you wendla bergman

10. and then there were none. this song didn't ever hit as hard for me until i lived through it. it's just such an accurate depiction of the desperation for connection you feel when you fall that low. it is the kind of song that burrows into your soul and aches and i love it for that.

9. don't do sadness/blue wind. it's just so heartbreaking and there are about a billion different ways i could put into words what this song means to me. but i will spare you. you all know what i mean.

8. touch me. yes it's this low but that doesn't mean i don't adore it! it's one of the most beautiful songs on the tracklist imo and i love the imagery it uses to create a sort of universal desire that the entire ensemble shares.

7. my junk. this song is FUN! it's really the only song in spring awakening that is lighthearted and upbeat and it's just so refreshing. it's silly and it's cute and i love it.

6. left behind. this is the first song i heard from spring awakening so that connection will ALWAYS be there, but that aside, i really just love the way it puts grief into words- it explores what could have been and what never was and it is just so heartbreaking.

5. mama who bore me reprise. i just love the vocals in this song and that is genuinely it. this was my most listened to song of 2021 if you even care

4. the guilty ones. THE GUILTY ONES!!!! i am so thankful for this song (i am a there once was a pirate/pirate night hater btw). i think it does a great job exploring wendla and melchior's inner worlds and i'm glad that this song is what stuck.

3. the bitch of living. it is impossible to hear that guitar riff and not feel something. there is (almost.) nothing more Spring Awakening than moritz pulling out the mic and transforming into a rockstar and bringing us with him into his inner world. i love love love this song endlessly

2. those you've known. what a perfect ending to the story. i love moritz and wendla in this song and the way they are able to show melchior that death is not the way out. melchior's decision to keep living for the friends he's lost is so deeply moving and i love the way this song closes his arc with the same motif that opens it: i'm calling, and one day all will know. those you've known is just an absolutely perfect song.

1. totally fucked. totally fucked is spring awakening. experiencing this song live was just entirely unreal. this song becomes an outlet for all the anger you've ever felt and it just has a way of making you feel powerful even in situations when you are powerless. it is the anthem of the kids who the system has let down and i just think that's what spring awakening is all about.

This song is 1) so fucking fun for Blorbo Listening Hours (shout out to Percy Critical role and also Fayne NPC from my brain. 19: Goodbye - Ramsey (From Arcane) : GodDAMN did this soundtrack have no right to go as hard as it did. (That is a lie. They spent six years making it.) Anyway this song is one I listened to a LOT while writing the plot for my current DnD campaign. The final chorus especially has this incredible rising tension and desperation and the vocalist is SO good.

57: Hope of Morning - Icon For Hire: AN ALL! TIME! BLORBO! SONG!! Like very much a bop as a standalone. I've been listening to this song since I was 13 BUT I especially enjoy listening to it for Sakura (from Naruto) and Lyn (the fucked up evil druid I've been playing in a DnD campaign for 2 yrs) Absolute bop. Yeah cavetown, basic for tsukki but at least it isn’t lemon boy. Something about the line from the chorus, “You looked so good in green. I hope you’re well, And you look so good with him” screams relationship-unready tsukishima for some reason. The artist said that they were new to love and I think it fits Tsukishima well.

First of all, yes I listen to big time rush. Secondly, I just think that someonewould play this during practice as a joke once but it’s stuck as their hype song and they just laugh about it afterwards. In contrast to the song talking about a guy who roams around picking up girls fits him in a way, though in a following song it tells of the wanderer getting his heart broken.

1. A Day To Remember | Metalcore band | My all-time FAVOURITE BAND - 10000000/10

2. My Chemical Romance | Punk/emo rock band| My favourite punk band. I love them but they're a little overrated! 9/10

3. Linkin Park | Alternative Rock band | Pretty sure everyone knows them. - I've been a fan since age 3. They went a little mainstream but they're still undefeated! 8/10

4. Twenty-One Pilots | Alternative hip-hop/rap rock band | When I'm not headbanging to metal, I sometimes need a chill-out band/ non-hardcore rock band; Twenty-One Pilots are just that - it's like emo rock without the guitar riffs but it still keeps the depressing lyrics. 7/10

5. Mother Mother | Indie Rock/Punk band | They're nice but not hardcore enough for me. Hayloft is a great song though. 5/10

6. I Prevail | Metalcore and Post-Hardcore band | Awesome band. I need to listen to more of their songs but my favourite is Scars. 7/10 so far!

7. Queen | They've done literally every genre of rock | I'm sure we all know Queen, even if you're not a rock fan. I like their metal songs as well as their pop-rock songs, but my favourite is a tie between Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions. RIP Freddie Mercury, the legend. 8/10

8. Panic! At The Disco | Emo pop/Pop Rock band | They're good but not hardcore enough for my tastes nowadays. 8 year old me loved them though! 6/10

9. Paramore | Pop punk/emo band | I LOVE THEM. My favourite song of theirs is That's What You Get. Some songs are more pop-ish than others however, so I prefer their more punk songs. Also, Hayley was and still is my emo celebrity girl crush. 8/10!

This took forever but here we go!

Danya -

1. What kind of clothing does your character like to wear? Do they have a style? Anything they avoid wearing?

Danya tends to wear dark cool tones, black, and white, with silver accents. Her style is best described as somewhere between a lawyer and a dominatrix, though she leans much closer to lawyer. Pencil skirts to mid knee or calves, various high necked blouses, and a jacket are most common, though she does occasionally wear less form fitting dresses. She avoids anything too casual in public since she is very aware she is representing the Family, though at home after dinner she changes into expensive layered night clothes with long sweeping robes. Chiffon, lace, and silk are her favorite fabrics.

9. If someone gave them flowers what would they do with them?

Panic internally about why someone is giving her flowers first, unless it’s a cousin/Ed then she just accepts them happily. If anyone outside the Family gives her flowers she will stare confused at the flowers, thank them and ask why they’ve given her flowers, internally panic briefly about if she should return the gift with more flowers? Either way they tend to end up in her office, and if they were given by someone she’s pining for she’ll stare longingly at them throughout the day and sigh.

11. How do they feel about casual endearments?

She loves them, but can sometimes be painfully awkward so she doesn’t know how to respond if someone new uses one on her. It’s bad enough when the hires call her Miss Danya, but an actual endearment from anyone she likes would overload her systems. She does sometimes call Ed my jackdaw or some variant of, and the family of course all have their nicknames, so those she is fond of. She finds it to be a lovely example of showing you love someone. Post-feelings talk with the hires they all get a lovey nickname.

37. How would they pass the time on a train?

She is very much a reader/workaholic, so she will either be reading up on whatever location she is going to, or catching up on research for work.

4. Would your character sing along to a vaguely familiar song, even if they messed up the lyrics as they went?

As is tradition in the family, if you do not know all of the words, you must make the new words entertaining. She’s not awful at that game either, but she’s no bard. She totally sings along though, especially in a big crowd or with her family. The smaller the group the less likely she is to sing, because she gets a little shy.

12. What color would they paint their room? Would there be a design on the ceiling?

She prefers blues, greens, white, and yellows in her room. The walls would be a nice pastel blue, light wooden floors, fluffy rugs, bed big enough for cuddling. If she could have a design it might be something like an accent wall instead, with a landscape of a place she thought was especially pretty. She’s not much of a decorator though, she just likes comfortable things and softer colors.

15. What’s a sound they can’t stand?

Rude ass customers and the sounds the chickens make when you slaughter them for dinner. She can do it, but the sound still makes something churn in her gut. Her cousin broke a bone once falling from the hayloft and the sound she made when she hit is another sound Lemon Did Not Like.

30. Have they ever tried to count their own freckles? Do they count other peoples?

Baby Lemon used to keep up with and try to hide every new freckle, because she knew if there were more of them then her mother would try another home remedy to get rid of them. She finally has reached a weird inbetween with her freckles, both loving and hating them all at once. She does try to count other peoples though, mostly some of her cousins and once Tadhgan’s very light ones. Their freckles are cute after all, and she liked mentally connecting them to make pictures.

Labon-

2. What’s their current hairstyle? Has it changed? Do they change it often?

When he was a kid it was long, and his mother kept it in a sort of undercut style with the sides braided and the top kept loose. When everything went down with his clan and he ended up in Waterdeep, it became a choppy mess that he kept short by cutting with his knife, and pulled back out of his eyes with a scrap piece of cloth. Currently it’s an artfully messy bob-ish look, but he’s been thinking about growing it out more and wearing it like he did as a kid.

6. Do they usually sleep in a certain pose? Does it change?

Labon pretty much always sleeps curled into as small of a ball as he can, arms around himself to protect his ribcage, and tucked away somewhere hidden. Even in his beast form he sleeps curled up as tight as he can be. The only time it changes is if he’s sleeping with Durhil, then he just becomes her backpack or curls into her instead of himself. She is Very Warm so he prefers sleeping with her.

10. Would they sneak out at night to look at the sky?

At home the clan were nomads, so peeking his head out of his tent wasn’t really sneaking, and later being a homeless street urchin in Waterdeep meant a roof was a luxury. Once he got pseudo adopted by the owner of the Lucky Lily, Lif-as well as the smith/shopkeep duo of Avi and Embric-he still didn’t really have to sneak out. His room at the Lily was at the very top, so all he had to do was open his window and climb up to the roof. So sneaking out no, but stargazing yes.

21. Do they touch or mess with their horns/hair a lot?

All the time. It’s part of why his hair is always messy. He does it mostly to self-soothe himself when he starts to get nervous/anxious/depressed/etc, and if he’s in partial shift he’ll groom his tail with his claws.

Amaryllis -

7. How would they react to eating something that was spicier than they expected it to be?

If she’s with her partners or trusted advisors, she meeps out a quiet “oh no” followed by a scramble to get a bread roll and milk. If she’s in public or at a dinner with important people and needing to maintain her Lion Empress facade, she saves her bread roll for cases just like this. Amaryllis would delicately dab her mouth with a napkin, take a few bites of the roll in between chatting, and do her very best to regulate her breathing so she doesn’t look like she’s dying. This is hard when she’s albino and any red in her skin if painfully obvious, but she’s gotten better at it over the years.

13. What helps them fall asleep when they’re having trouble doing so?

Tea! She grows her own garden to make teas with, so she’s involved in the process from start to finish. Going through the steps of making tea helps her calm down, and then she has her sleepy tea before trying to go back to sleep. Just after the coupe when her mind was racing with plans she would wander the halls, inevitably end up in the throne room, and slowly make her way back to her chambers. Once Zadok came to the castle sleeping with them helped immeasurably. They’re such a stable presence and that helps Amaryllis sleep easier.

18. Would they sing a lullaby, if the opportunity arose?

She would! Her father had one he used to sing to her about the flowers in the garden growing up, so she most likely would sing that one.

22. When they speak, do they have a default tone of voice? If yes, do they try to change it? Why?

Yes! Her accent is a weird combo of French and British, sort of like Cassandra from DA:I, and depending on who she’s with or her goal the tone changes drastically. Her default is actually quite soft, and she has a fairly standard alto register, the kind of voice you’d want reading a bedtime story or a love poem. When she’s got on the Lion Empress facade her tone shifts to a colder harder edge, and dips just a little bit lower, so she sounds authoritative and a little bit threatening.

Laura -

8. Are their hands steady?

Somewhat! She used to be a waitress/bartender with her papa at his tavern, so she’s got good balance and isn’t super shaky, but she’s no surgeon.

14. Do they tend to run hot or cold? Do they do anything to deal with that?

She runs a little cold, but honestly doesn’t bother with it much, outside of curling up with one of the girls or maybe grabbing a blanket. Laura is fairly low maintenance when it comes to things like that.

16. Would they draw patterns in frosted windows/fogged up mirrors? What would they draw?

She would, but just random patterns or silly notes as a pick me up for whoever comes in next.

19. Do they see patterns in the world around them? Do they point them out to people?

Laura is very good at reading the weather based on clouds and the ocean, most likely inherited from her mama, but those are really the only patterns she bothers with outside of her partners’ skin. Which sounds awful, but they have either tattoos or scales which is endlessly interesting to Laura, she will wax poetic about how interesting they are. She will also use the word interesting 100 times because while she is the daughter of a bard she is very much not one and words aren’t her strong suit.

Zimri -

5. If they wear any, how does your character go about applying makeup?

So canon Zimri uses kohol and charcoal to give her eyes a smoked out wing, as well as a red lip stain nearly everyday. Her eyes are a gold-ish orange-ish color, so she thinks it helps for her to have some extra definition around her eyes. She applies it quickly in the morning, and washes it off before bed. Modern AU Zimri is as deep into the world of makeup as you can be, and it takes her a solid two hours to put on a face. Her foundation isn’t super heavy, and she doesn’t do much contour other then some light bronzer, but she does get very excited about eye makeup, highlighter, and various lip colors. And body butters with highlighter in them. Make her all gold and copper and she’s very happy.

17. Do they fidget? How and/or with what?

Zimri will fidget with her earrings sometimes, or various rings. She’ll pick at her nails with another nail if she’s really bored, but she doesn’t really fidget out of nerves, more to keep her hands busy because she’s bored and trying to stay awake.

33. Where are they in a group hug?

Wherever she can squeeze in. She isn’t super short, but compared to her partners she is, so I imagine she either jetpacks herself to one of them, or is in the middle.

35. Do they sing with their head voice or chest voice?

Shockingly Zimri sings with her chest voice the most. She thinks it makes her sound more sultry when she uses her chest voice compared to her head voice, but she knows to adapt to the audience she has, so she’ll switch as needed.

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? Hayloft. For sure. Not only for finishing the writing, but for keeping on a 38 week posting schedule. I could have made a new human in that time.

What work of yours has the most hits? This year: The Hayloft. But it was weekly posted and 38 chapters, so the hit count is a bit different. Overall: The Invocation of Saint Margaret. But that is one of my oldest Johnlock fics, so that's not a real surprise.

What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? The shorts I've added to Safety First. It's such an apt but... dark? violent? AU and it really is engaging.

If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most? I've stopped using song lyrics most of the time. Which work of yours have you reread the most? This year: Mistakes were made - because it's short and delightful and there's a tiktok. Overall: probably All These Things That I've Done - *sky kiss to my lyrics era* I don't think there's a more raw/real fic I've written. And it's not soft... but I do think it's hopeful. I just love the way it turned out. And it doesn't get the love that some of my other writing gets because it's pre-Johnlock (ending at the beginning of S1E1) But I do love breaking my own heart.

One of Greg’s first memories was reaching to touch a beautiful flower and having his hand caught in elegant fingers, being scooped up into the air and twirled in a circle. His mother’s voice sweet and low, ‘Non, non, mon bout’chou. Elles sont belles et délicates. On ne touche qu’avec les yeux.’ And she taught him over and again that the world was full of beautiful things, but then she was gone and he had to learn what things could be touched on his own.

Biggest surprise while writing this year? Getting really really into the Safety First AU again... I didn't expect it, but I effing love it.

I stole several songs from a playlist my friends have and I’m not gonna put those on this list, I won’t pretend I came up with those

The ship playlists (since they aren’t for canon couples) are very much based on my headcanons. We don’t get to see them interact literally ever so I’ve just extrapolated what I can. Several of these songs are at least alluding to sex, I don’t really think they actually slept together for various reasons I can enumerate if someone asks, but it’s more about the vibes of the song.

The circumstances of their lives arent super fun at the moment so they find refuge in each other but in a very weird kind of unhealthy way! “We are a hurricane” sort of alludes to knowing that you’re causing problems/your relationship isn’t great.

It’s about not really being In Love but kind of convincing yourself you are because it makes you feel better in the circumstances. I don’t think either of them were fully into their relationship for various reasons. Not as in they didn’t want the other, more that they were both too aware it would never work for long.

This one’s about wanting the idea of love and companionship more than you actually like the other person, which I feel like kind of fits. This song is framed as one person in love with the other and one hesitating, but i think this works for both of them to hesitate.

And then the skater boy ending with a successful music career vs Dolokhov ending with a successful military career and a great reputation and both the women in the songs having sad endings...I’m not wrong.

This song started playing on accident once when I was listening to this playlist and I was like huh. It fits though. The gun thing is twofold: 1) Though he is not her father, Pierre does have a gun in the duel and 2) I think Vassily would happily shoot Dolokhov for his relationships with Vassily’s kids. It’s also just the general forbidden love vibes mixed with the violence vibes.

The song kinda reads as someone trying to convince themselves they’re happy that the relationship is over, which I think is definitely what happens for both of them.
