WHOLESOME SONIC & TAILS WEDNESDAY BABYYY!!!
Short fic I whipped up today-- I know it's probably been done before, but I wanted a "Sonic's learning how to care for a toddler + hearing each other talk for the first time + Sonic naming him" all in one and haven't found all that in one fic yet so here we are!!
Looking after a toddler was harder than it sounded.
Especially when said toddler needed to be watched by the fastest thing alive, who was used to racing through everything with absolutely nothing holding him back.
Sonic studied the little two-tailed fox kit at his feet, trying to figure him out. Technically, no one had assigned him to watch this little one, but he'd found the poor thing getting bullied by some jerks. He'd taken care of the bullies, and the next thing he'd known, the little fox was flying after him. Yes, flying, using his twin tails as a helicopter of sorts.
That was all it took for Sonic to feel like the little kit was now his responsibility.
They hadn't actually spoken. Sonic wasn't sure if the fox kit could even talk yet, and he didn't see the use in trying to communicate with him vocally.
It was harder to keep on running when he now had to make sure the kit was safe. He hadn't realized how many needs one had until he needed to think of two mouths to feed, two places to sleep, etc.
It wasn't necessarily hard. It just took some getting used to. Nothing Sonic the Hedgehog couldn't handle!
He looked up and scanned their surroundings. They'd stopped for a break in a small, sparse forest. The fox kit was going back and forth from looking around nervously to gazing up at Sonic with owlish eyes. He stood not even a foot away from the hedgehog, clearly trusting him to protect him from any more danger.
Sonic waved a little to get the kit's attention, then pointed onward to the path they'd been following. The little one nodded vigorously, then spun his tails and hovered into the air. Sonic gave a single, firm nod, then took off down the trail.
As they sped along the way (the kit was able to keep up fairly easily, it was cool how flight seemed to automatically enhance speed), Sonic snuck a tiny glance back at his tiny friend. The fluffy little fox continued flying, unaware of Sonic's curious gaze.
Sonic still didn't know his name. Sure, he'd only been taking care of him for a week or so, but he learned the names of most folks he met the same day he met them. Granted, most folks he met weren't neglected orphan (?) toddlers.
Sonic had all but decided to adopt him at this point, despite not having known him for long. So would that leave the naming process up to him?
He smiled a little to himself as he continued running. Sounded good.
The thing was, though, he hadn't actually ever named someone before. Heck, he wasn't even yet twelve years old himself.
What kind of name would fit the little fox? He was small, still had all his baby-fluff, was a brownish-gold color, had big, bright, sky-blue eyes, with white fur across his stomach and muzzle (and obviously the tips of his twin tails).
An idea of a name, or nickname, was just on the tip of his tongue when suddenly the sound of robots, a lot of them, creaked up ahead over the hill. It was followed by maniacal laughter, and Sonic skidded to a halt and rolled his eyes with a scoff. He'd know that laugh anywhere by now.
Excited by the idea of a fight, Sonic was just revving up to spindash over the hill into the battle, but a squeak of fear suddenly made his heart lurch, and he almost fell over himself trying to stop.
The fox kit.
He was a literal toddler. He seemed about three years old, nowhere near old enough to fight or defend himself. Sonic couldn't just expect him to follow him into the battle and manage to avoid all the lasers and claws and spikes. He would get hurt too easily.
But . . . Sonic never ran from a fight.
He crossed his arms and frowned in frustration at the grassy ground, tapping his foot impatiently as he tried to figure out what to do. He wanted to fight, he had to fight. He didn't know what Eggman was up to. For all he knew, the crazed scientist was planning something big and dangerous, and might carry it to fruition if Sonic didn't stop him now.
But he also had to keep the fox kit safe.
An idea hit him, and before he'd given himself the chance to think it through, he spun around, scooped up the little fox into his arms, and took off back into the forest-- just not quite at his normal speed so the sonic boom wouldn't give him away to Eggman.
As soon as Sonic had found a safe-looking hiding place-- a hollowed-out nook beneath some tree roots-- he knelt down and gently tucked the fox kit into the little space. Just for extra security, he scooped up some big chunks of moss and tucked it around his friend's body. He held up his hands in a "stay" gesture, but a part of him worried that the little one wouldn't understand fully what was going on.
"Stay here," he said aloud, trying to look both gentle and stern, and the kit's eyes grew wide. "I'm just going to fight off the scary robots. I'll come back for you."
He waited till he got a nod from the fox kit, whose mouth was agape and eyes were still huge. The moment he'd gotten the acknowledgement, he spun around and blasted back towards where he'd seen Eggman and his robots.
The fight was quick and easy, routine at this point for him. Eggman yelled insults at him, he smashed through the bots, waited for the mad scientist to fly away in his orb-like flying thing (all the while shouting more threats at him) but for once Sonic skipped the stupid taunts and banter from his own end. He needed to get back to the fox kit.
When he skidded to a halt back at the hollow, his shoulders slumped in relief to see that his tiny friend had obeyed and was still huddled in the space. He was also still gaping at him in amazement.
Sonic grinned and flashed him a thumbs-up, then his own jaw went slack when the kit exclaimed happily, "You talk!" in the sweetest little toddler voice he'd ever heard.
"You talk?!" he exclaimed back, holding out his arms in excitement. "Buddy! Why didn't you say something before?!"
"You were quiet," the kit pointed out, his voice and words choppy and hesitant, making it evident that while he could talk, it was just barely. "I ph'ot I should be quiet too."
"Buddy," Sonic chuckled. "I just thought ya couldn't talk yet. That's all."
"'Course I can talk!" the fox chirped, sounding both indignant and proud.
Sonic snickered. "'Course you can talk," he echoed back teasingly. "Well then, what's your name, kid?"
The kit made a face. "Promise not to tell anyone?" He glanced around a few times before he added, still looking sour, "It's Miles."
Sonic tilted his head. "Miles? You don't look like a Miles to me."
The fox kit's annoyance at the sound of his own name was almost startling, he clearly didn't like it at all. The idea of not liking one's own name wasn't rare, but it seemed odd for a fox as young as this one to feel such a way.
But that meant Sonic could still name him. He grinned and winked at his new little pal, remembering the name he'd been thinking of earlier. "Okay. I'll call you Tails."
Barely a second after hearing his new name, the fox kit-- Tails-- lit up like it was the most exciting thing he'd experienced. Maybe it was.
"Yes! Yes, yes!" he exclaimed happily, jumping out of the hollow to fly around in a circle. "Tails! I'm Tails!"
And Sonic merely smiled. It seemed like he had a new baby brother.
(thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed! This will be posted on Wattpad soon - my user is Chaton15 there - and this has made me want to write a ton more so I'll just post it as the first of a bunch of Sonic one-shots. 🤩)

Sonic winced as he sat in the chair while Tails wrapped the bandage around his arm, tightening it a bit too tightly for his liking. The two had just finished off another weekly battle with Dear Old Egghead and had gotten some more battle damage than usual, Tails had a few scrapes but Sonic had more cuts and bruises than fermentated peach fighting in a boxing match.
Though he wouldn't mind something fermented right now to deal with this headache of his.
"Would you stop squirming?" Tails huffed out, putting his focus back on the bandage. “You’re going to make it loose.”
"Well, I would if the rude doctor wouldn't wrap this bandage so tightly." That comment earned him another tight tug. "Hey!"
"You're all done." The fox mumbled out, putting away the leftover patches and wraps into the first aid kit, moving away from Sonic as he began to fiddle with the bandages. "Don't mess with them."
"I was actually being serious that time. You wrapped it too tightly, and it's uncomfortable." He rolled his arm forward and back to try and get some feeling back.
"I had to as a precaution. Your cut was pretty deep, and I don’t want you bleeding out overnight."
"Geez, I'm not that fragile, Tails. I can handle a minor cut."
One of Tails' ears twitched in annoyance as he whipped his head around. "It wasn’t minor, Sonic. That badnik nearly sliced your arm off clean!"
Sonic held up his arms in surrender, sensing the kit was getting more than fed up. "Alright, alright. Fine, I won't bother them."
He didn't exactly blame him for the outburst. The whole day was pretty stressful, and neither of them had yet to properly wind down from it, which was very evident for Tails in this case. Not even a large can of mints would help with the grouchiness.
He was about to let it go as Tails turned around, when he noticed that the fox held his hand against his right side, not exactly wrapped around his torso but just enough to see that it was definitely bothering him as he moved.
"Hang on," he called out, making Tails stop. "Did you manage to get whatever is bothering your side?"
Tails ears perked up, avoiding Sonic’s gaze. "Nothing is wrong with my side." He answered rather quickly, Sonic didn’t fight the urge to roll his eyes. The kid was still stubborn to admit stuff even though it was shown evidently.
"If it's not bothering you, then why are you holding your hand there like that?" He probed, watching closely as Tails lowered his hand away and placed it on his hip instead.
"It... doesn't hurt that much. It just aches a bit. That's all."
Sonic let out a hum, jumping of the work bench. "If that's the case, you wouldn't mind if I checked for myself, do you?"
He saw Tails' ears fold back as he walked towards him, his appendages twitching anxiously and his hand going back up against his side. "I do mind, actually. I told you it's fine."
"Well, you wouldn't be holding your hand there so much if you weren't hurt...unless you were." He raised an eyebrow and stared the kit down. Tails tried to hold a poker face, but he knew that this was a losing battle that could only end in his surrender.
"Okay." Tails sighed and sat on one of the stools closest to him and held his arm out, gingerly raising it with a grimace to show his slightly bruised side. "Just be careful."
Sonic let out a quiet huff as he gently pressed his fingers against his side, reeling back a bit when Tails winced. "Always am, bud."
"You definitely weren't today."
"Shush." He took note of the small yet dark marks against the yellow fur. He did remember one of the badniks swiping at Tails, and he ended up taking a hard hit from one of them. "Man, it got you pretty good."
Tails shrugged. "It's just bruised. There's no fractures I checked."
"Still, you gotta take it easy. A simple bruise like that can get bad quickly. I don't want you doing any more heavy lifting for the rest of the day, either."
Tails huffed out a small laugh. "Kinda too late for that since I've been carrying your butt around all day."
"Watch that sass, young man."
"Yes, dad."
“That’s Mr. Dad to you.”
“No, I am not calling you that.”
“Fair enough.”

Sonic has been called an "overprotective big brother" over the years many times. Not his fault that Tails is small, impressionable, and reckless. He's known the kid since he was a toddler, if anyone else had been around that long they would understand too.
Or at least he thought they would, but it seems he was wrong because his own two best friends–Amy and Knuckles–are the ones who call him overprotective the most. This is a huge betrayal on their part, especially when they bring up valid points like Tails' intelligence and skill, because how could he disagree. Sonic has the coolest, most awesome and amazing, little brother ever.
With that being said, Sonic is pretty sure he has the right to interrogate the little fox this time. He's like 90% sure his panic is warranted when he sees his little brother load and cock a very real and deadly gun. Because that kid is 9. He is 9, and he is putting on his watch and his plane gear to leave, and for some reason he needs a weapon wherever he's going. Sonic thinks he has a right to exercise at least a little big brother privilege here, honestly it would be negligent to not at least question him.
"Hey bud. Whatcha up to?"
Tails' ear flicks toward him as he packs a few things into the Tornado. "You remember that hard drive that GUN thought they stole from me, but I actually knew they wanted it so I lowered a few of my defense systems so that they could grab it and leave me alone?"
The answer is no, Sonic has no recollection of that happening at all. Though he supposes it's his own fault for only half listening when Tails was talking. He's really gotta break that habit.
"Sure do." Sonic lies.
"Well, I actually have a little bit of data on there that I forgot to back up to another hard drive since I didn't think I needed it, so I'm going to go get it."
"And you need a weapon for that? Why don't you just ask Shadow?"
Tails finally turns to face Sonic, floating down off the Tornado and in front of Sonic. He stands with his hands on his hips, leaning just a little into his personal space. He takes the chance to absentmindedly scratch behind his little brother's ears, making him push his head into his hand.
"I did, actually. He's the one who told me to bring some weapons, he said he wants to help me improve my stealth techniques."
"Huh, and he didn't even bother to text me about it." Sonic huffs. It comes out playfully, but he won't deny being a little peeved that Shadow didn't message him. Tails is a genius and can make his own decisions, sure, but he's also not even in double digits. Sonic is literally his guardian, he feels like he should've been consulted about this. "I find that quite rude."
Tails smacks Sonic with one of his tails. The fur gets trapped in the small quills on his face, which makes his brother giggle.
"Then how do you find that, hm?"
"I find that the person who did it has another thing coming."
Sonic is so gonna fill his pillows with quills and shaving cream again. The fox constantly complains about not being able to get his quills out of any furniture, but he also got his fur stuck on Sonic's face, he figures this is pretty good retribution.
"Sure I do."
This is what Sonic means. Where did his wholesome brother go? Ignoring the fact that he has been a little menace since they first met, this is obviously team Dark's fault. Their devious ways are corrupting his little brother, who has obviously only learned nice things from him, like dad jokes and spindashing.
Tails has been constantly hanging out with team Dark for a few months now. After spending time with Rouge on Amy's last birthday he seemed to acquire a sort of childish fascination with them. Honestly, Sonic didn't really see it as a bad thing at first. They got Tails to spend more time out of his lab, and they always seemed to take care of him so Sonic had no qualms as long as Tails was having fun.
Then the habits came. Habits that Sonic had managed to completely purge a couple years back. Sure, he's not building bombs willy nilly anymore (as far as he knows anyway), but a few weeks ago Tails showed him the Empire nuclear launch codes just because he could.
Just yesterday they were having a conversation about a grocery store in station square. Amy had apparently told him that the cashier was kind of rude, so he asked if she wanted him to "blow up the entire store". She laughed and said no thanks, but when Sonic just shook his head at him Tails had the audacity to say "he'll make sure there's no one in it", as if that was the problem with what he said.
Sonic will not claim to have clean hands. He will not say he's never killed anybody on purpose or on accident, but is it so much to want to spare his brother from the same fate? Sonic still has nightmares over things like that, and even if his little brother is joking, he just can't find it in himself to laugh.
It's obvious Sonic will have to talk to Shadow and Rouge soon, he would talk to Omega as well but the robot honestly just does whatever he wants. Sonic can respect it. He cannot, however, respect Shadow and Rouge teaching his kid brother bad stuff, like how to get away with murder and other things of the like.
"I'll be back before you know it, Sonic, I swear!"
It's obvious Sonic has just missed most of the one sided conversation Tails was just having with him, he zoned out again. Damn it.
"And I'll have my communicator on me so if anything goes wrong, you'll be the first to know! I'll stay safe, Shadow will be with me."
Tails says that as if it's any comfort to Sonic. He may trust Shadow with his life but he does not trust him with children. He's sure Tails will come out physically unscathed, but mentally? This is going to be a trainwreck.
Sonic sighs. He already knows he won't be able to convince him not to go, at least not in the small timeframe he has, so he just pulls the kid in for a hug instead. "Call me as soon as you're able, okay?"
"I will, promise!"
"And if you're not back and not answering in 24 hours, I'm coming to find you myself."
"Yes, Sonic." Tails says, pulling away.
"And I'll give Shadow a piece of my mind if I have to, you know I will."
"I'm leaving now."
"And so will Knuckles and Amy!"
"Goodbye!"
"Remember what I said about calling!"
"I can't hear you anymore!"
Sonic smiles as Tails starts his plane, the kid will be fine, he knows it. After all, he's sure Shadow and Rouge know the consequences if he's not.
woe, the brothers be upon ye I wrote this in like two sittings and its barely been edited, I'll probably put this on ao3 later after I've looked at it again lol. you're welcome to hit me up in my dms or askbox, but if it's a request I would prefer my ask box lol. Sonic wasn’t a stranger to off days. In fact, he had them a lot more often than most people realized, he was just really good at hiding them.
Maybe a little too good.
This day, however, was particularly bad.
He wasn’t sure why. He pretty much just woke up in a grassy field feeling like, well, shit and it felt a little more challenging to simply push down like he usually did. Even after a quick call with Tails — something that usually cheered him up almost immediately — he still felt like he wanted to disappear off the face of Mobius, never to fight in another battle or have the pressure of saving the world ever again.
He’d never admit it because he genuinely loves doing what he does, but it gets to him sometimes. He’s only fifteen years old, when did it become his responsibility for all this crap.
Sometimes he did wish he had a more simple life. Just him, his little brother, and his close friends living out their teenage (and little kid) years like normal Mobians.
However, the adrenaline junkie in him quickly kicks that idea in the ass. He didn’t think he could ever live without all the death defying stunts and risks that came with his current lifestyle. It just wouldn’t be as fun. Plus, doing what he does is the reason he has most of his friends in the first place.
He wouldn’t trade this current life for anything in the world, but it can still drag him down sometimes.
He closed his eyes and felt a gentle breeze surround him and dance among the blades of grass. The leaves of nearby trees rustling and flickies chirping were like distant symphonies as the sun’s warmth engulfed him.
He stayed like that for around thirty minutes, just basking in all that nature had to offer him this morning. Quiet moments like these were part of what kept him fighting. As long as Eggman was dead set on destroying areas like these, Sonic would be there to stop him.
After what felt like an eternity to the hedgehog, he got up and stretched. He looked around him, picked a random location, and took off running, hoping to leave his thoughts behind.
He ran for hours, occasionally stopping to check out a view or quickly help someone. But it didn’t matter how fast or how far he went, the thoughts always caught up to him.
Past failures, little comments made by the media that affected him a little more than they probably should, guilt he had stored up from past life choices, etc.
But nothing haunted him more than those dreaded six months.
Months of isolation. Not knowing if his friends were ok, if his baby brother was ok, The torture, the anxiety, the shackles. The illusions of his loved ones dying before his eyes over and over again and being mocked or yelled at by them.
The depression and nightmares that followed were almost too much for him to bear and he probably would’ve lost it if his overwhelming sense of guilt didn’t push him to stick around and help.
His friends weren’t mad at him for not helping them for most of the war. In fact, it almost felt like they were babying him in a way. Constantly asking he was okay and making sure he was comfortable whenever they had downtime. Even Tails was seemingly walking on eggshells around him which definitely made him feel some kind of way.
When the war finally ended, he disappeared for about two months. It was all too overwhelming.
He knew it was a selfish move, but Chaos forbid he makes one decision that solely benefits himself after that whole mess. He just needed to be alone and run off those six months.
No one was mad at him when he finally reappeared, the closest thing would be how worried Tails was.
He always did worry too much.
Everything slowly went back to normal. The war slowly became a thing of the past, just another victory over Dr Eggman.
So why was Sonic still so hung up over it?
A noise from his stomach stopped his thoughts dead in their tracks. He slowed to a stop somewhere on the shoreline and checked his communicator for the time. How was it already lunch time? Did he really spend that much time thinking about all that crap?
He sped off in the direction of the Mystic Ruins. Being around his brother always managed to make him feel at least a little better. Maybe it would be more effective than just simply calling him.
He stopped at the front door of the house and punched in the code.
It was quiet. There were no noises coming from the workshop downstairs. Was the kit even home? It would suck if he wasn’t, what would be the point of Sonic showing up if his little brother wasn’t even here. Where did he go?
A certain smell overrode all his thoughts as he walked into the kitchen. Sitting on the counter was a plate of chili dogs that were still warm (he could just tell).
He smiled. Tails was definitely home.
Right on cue, he heard the workshop door open and a certain two-tailed fox walked into the kitchen. The weight on Sonic’s chest became lighter as the two talked about whatever came to mind with Tails even suggesting a movie night later on.
Fondness grasped at his heart, giving it a tight squeeze. Somehow, Tails once again knew he was having a bad day just from a brief interaction hours earlier. He never once asked what was wrong or made the hedgehog to talk about his feelings, he just did little things like make him food and offer to spend time together doing pointless things and goofing around. He even said he was just working on blueprints today which Sonic knew was just in case he didn’t feel like talking or just wanted to be alone.
Sonic didn’t know what he’d do without this kid. He really did have the best little brother a hedgehog could ask for.

its finally done! happy wsatw everyone <333
word count: 1,817
At 10:39 PM on Saturday, every single person anywhere on either coasts of the continent, and people looking to cross either border of the United Federation, felt a harsh gust of wind.
Commotion ensued, but Sonic, of course, didn’t stick around to see it. When he arrived back at Emerald Coast, he cut back into the city and zoomed past cars cruising along Speed Highway. He ran in front of a few of them, daring them to hit him before swooping away at the last second. Before the fifth exit whizzed by, Sonic bounced over the guardrail and took off through the bare-bones forested area, hopping up and jumping from rooftop to rooftop before he hit the ground running. He passed through lots more cramped neighborhoods on the outskirts of Central City until he made it to the Night Babylon district, where he ran up the side of some random building, speeding up to the top—
And tripped.
And fell.
He just laid there for a moment, before flipping himself over as rapid, shallow breaths racked his body.
Running didn't get tiring. Not normal running, anyway— when he had food in his stomach, water in his blood, and eight hours of sleep.
In the moment, though, with his limbs sore and shaking, he thought this must be like how it felt if the average person ran just a hundred miles. Or maybe even only ninety.
The world kept spinning. It always did, and it wouldn't wait for him to get over whatever funk he was in. He hit his fist dully on the concrete ground.
He should go back to Mystic Ruins. To make sure Tails was okay, of course. Not to sleep or eat or anything, really. Then he would go back to running— patrolling. He was patrolling to make sure no one was causing trouble while everyone else rested. Of course. He pushed himself up.
Sonic didn't cry that day. Not once. Because if the only person who saw him cry was dead now, then no one had any proof.
And now, running back to his little brother's workshop, he could chalk the tears in his eyes up to the wind beating at his face.
The trip was just a bit slower than it probably would have been normally. It was like his body was protesting against moving his legs, one after the other. He almost collapsed on the porch once he reached it when a wave of exhaustion hit him upon seeing the home, but pushed through the door and shoved himself up the stairs. A chill shuttered through his body, forcing him to realize just how cold he was now that he was inside, and he made a quick pitstop in his room to yank his comforter off the bed and bundle himself in it.
Tails’ room was just down the hall, but he already knew the kit wasn’t in there. For one, the door was open, and Tails hates it when his door’s open. And for two, his self-imposed bed time when he thought Sonic wasn’t around was around three in the morning (but, more recently, it had started stretching to four). So, he begrudgingly hauled himself back down the stairs and through the Tornado’s hangar, giving her a pat on the wing for good luck, and arriving at Tails’ workshop door. A strange sweet smell emanated from the room.
He gently pushed open the door, the sweet and somewhat nostalgic smell becoming stronger. The moment he stepped through the door, Tails’ ear flicked, and he spun his chair around, yipping in surprise. “Sonic! You’re back!” His face then morphed into a bright smile as he waved him over and spun back to continue his work.
The plan was to just check in for a bit, maybe send his brother to bed, but now… Well, maybe he’d rest for a bit. Just a bit. He leaned over Tails’ shoulder. “For a bit, yeah. What’s that smell?”
“Oh, uh, blowtorch s’mores.”
“Huh?”
Tails held up a stick with a jumbo marshmallow at the end and a blowtorch. It was only then that Sonic noticed the graham crackers and chocolate bars where mechanic tools should’ve been on the workbench. “Blowtorch s’mores,” he repeated.
“Uh, yeah, I heard you, heh. What’s the occasion?” Sonic hopped up and sat on the workbench, blanket draping over the corner and barely touching the ground.
“Science.”
“Okayyyyy… Can I have one?”
“Sure! Here—” he picked up a second blowtorch that was haphazardly thrown under the table— “just click that button and it'll turn on, and release it to turn it off.”
Sonic yoinked a marshmallow from the package and stuck it on the end of one of the roasting sticks Tails had rested on the side of his workbench. “Ssso, whatcha—” He got cut off by his own throat spurring into a coughing fit. Turns out 24 hours without a drop of water in his system did some real shitty things. Tails immediately shoved a water bottle into his free hand that was about to pick up the blowtorch; he downed the bottle in all of 3 seconds and mumbled a quick ‘thanks’, wiping his mouth. “Whatcha been working on?” he finished.
“Well, before I got distracted by this,” Tails set his perfectly toasted marshmallow aside and turned to the graham crackers splayed out, lightly melting the chocolate laid out on top. “I was fixing up the Cyclone! She got really damaged yesterday…”
“Oof. How bad?”
“Not too bad, I think I did a pretty good job back there,” Tails said with a smug grin. Sonic mentally cheered him on. “But I have to fix up and replace a lot of her casing that got too dented to be safe. And some quick repairs to her engine, ‘cuz Eggman kinda busted it up with his bullets…”
“Wait, what? When did Eggman shoot at you?” He put the blowtorch to the marshmallow, letting the flame consume it until it lit up the entire room, burning so bright the fire’s image was seared into his eyelids.
He knew he didn’t have enough power to save him and fly the both of them back to the ARK. Had he succeeded in grabbing hold of Shadow, they both would’ve died that day. He reached out anyway.
“Maria, this is what you wanted, right? This is my promise I made to you…”
As his hand was waved away, his fingers accidentally curled around the golden bracelet. It snapped off.
The last glimmer of white faded from his fur, and he fell.
He swallowed the lump in his throat and clutched the bracelet close to his chest.
Sonic blew out the flame once it had charred the outside of the marshmallow.
“Yeah, after he tried to blow you up.”
“And did you show him what for…?”
“Hehe, maybeee…”
“Hell yeah!” He set down the blowtorch and ruffled the kit’s bangs as he constructed his s’more. “That’s how I know I raised you right!”
“Pffft— Sonic, stoppp!”
“Okay, okay,” he let up and took out his own crackers and chocolate, smushing the ingredients together and taking a big bite. Gaia, he hadn’t realized how hungry he was… “But,” he said through a mouthful of sugar gunk, “I’m still proud of you, little bro.”
“R– Right! Thank you!”
Sonic practically scarfed down his s’more and went in for another one. “But the Cyclone’s gonna be okay, right?”
“Hm? Oh, yeah! She’ll be okay, but I might take it easy on her for a little while… Those chaos drives got me thinking maybe I put a little too much focus on offense? I mean, it’s mostly for fighting, but if I took out the extra propulsions for rockets and slimmed down the auto-aimer, I could make some more room to add a holo-shield, plus I’d have even more room if I used just one chaos drive to power my ammo rather than what I have in there now!”
Tails rambled on, his explanations becoming more and more weird and sciency with terms spliced in that Sonic had no hope of understanding. A fond smile made its way on his face as he burnt his second marshmallow, looking at the kit.
“—But I think I can make it work! If I rework the leg hydraulics to be lighter, then the rocket boost can—”
“You know I love you, right, little bro?”
Tails stopped, half his s’more in his hand. “...Huh?”
“I said—”
“I heard you. Of course I know, hehe… I love you too, big bro!” Tails bonked his head against Sonic’s arm.
“Heh, just checking.” It was no use to dwell too much. His entire body ached with grief, but if he let it drown everything around him out, he’d never hear the wind when it called to him with the promise of adventure.
It hurt so much, but he had to keep going. For his own sake, of course, but…
But also because Shadow, in his brief time on Earth, didn’t get that kind of freedom. So he’d live for him, if that’s what it took to get him out of this weird funk.
“Hey, how about we hit up the Station Square Diner in the morning? My treat!”
Tails’ eyes lit up. Maybe not at the prospect of the food, but more likely at the suggestion to hang out. “Yeah, that sounds awesome!” Tails finished his first s’more, while Sonic finished eating his second.
“Then it’s settled! C’mon, let’s head to bed now so we can beat the morning rush tomorrow,” Sonic said, standing up and stretching with his comforter’s edge balled up in his fists.
“Aw, but I wanted to work on the Cyclone—”
“Nope! Sorry, but you’re under contractual obligation now, Mister Prower!”
“That’s not how contracts work— eek!”
Sonic grabbed him and bundled the two of them in the comforter, carrying the kit awkwardly on his hip as he struggled. “That’s why you gotta read the fine print, heh.”
“Stoooop! Let me gooo!”
“Nope! It’s sleepy time for geniuses and speedsters!” Sonic dragged both his aching body and the kit’s struggling one up the stairs to the house part of the lab and flopped down on the couch.
“Sonic?”
“Tails?”
“Are we sleeping on the couch tonight?”
“If you don’t mind, then yeah.”
“Hehe, I don’t mind. It reminds me of when we’d sleep outside.”
“Oh?”
Tails shifted so he wasn’t awkwardly pressed against the back of the couch. “Yeah, that’s why I was making s’mores, too. ‘Cuz, u– um. I kinda missed you just a little bit today…”
A small laugh managed to slip out of him. “Aw, bud… maybe I should give phones another try so we can talk while I’m on the go.”
Tails yawned. “That’d be nice…”
Sonic adjusted to make sure his neck wouldn’t hurt like hell in the morning. “G’night, little bro.”
“Good night, big bro.”

I know it’s wholesome Sonic and Tails Wednesday eve and I shouldn’t be posting anything angsty BUT
Now that we’re exploring the potential of Tails being directly linked to the Chaos Emeralds…
Team Sonic and the restoration are fighting Eggman’s forces, it’s rough, they’re outnumbered and are getting close to being out powered, Silver and Team Dark’s assistance be dammed, Eggman did plan how to keep them occupied.
A foreign place, no citizens around, no remaining functioning facilities nearby, not any city, town or population, nothing close to them, everything has been rather evacuated or demolished by Badniks.
They’re scattered around the battlefield, everyone way too far from one another, but they have to cover more terrain, and no one’s better than Sonic to do that.
He’s going from edge to edge, dodging, punching, wrecking, they’ve been at this for hours but he can keep on for days, no doubt.
There’s yelling and shouting until there isn’t, a harsh sudden silence taking its place, weird. Sonic turns to the vibration in his arm.
His communicator illuminates in bright angry red, an alarm. Tails vitals.
Tails flatlines.
Way to sudden, no rising on vitals, no yelling from his side of the battlefield, it had to be a mistake, he needed it to be a mistake.
But the screen shows Tails’ communicator’s still attached to his wrist, and there’s no longer any silence when the shouts and cries of the fox’s name fill the place, It wasn’t a mistake.
He nearly trips on his own feet at how quickly he moved, his legs suddenly so weak to support him, but he had no time to freeze, he had no time to doubt he had no time-
He gets beside him in less than a second.
He’s on the ground, no badniks near him, the ground around him almost steaming, surrounding him in infernal smoke, he can feel the ground trembling, trembling, almost like how his body felt when a much younger Tails was purring while hugging him. Hell, why does he look so small all of the sudden?
His baby brother’s bright pretty yellow fur tainted if not bathed in a sick red. His chest fluff has no white left to show, a deep wound right over his heart. No.
He craddles him close, he knows he shouldn’t move him but he shouldn’t be so still, he wasn’t supposed to be this still, no, he was supposed to at least be crying he was supposed to hug Sonic back he was supposed to open his eyes-
There are no functioning hospitals in miles. The medic team is not equipped for this after hours of treating the wounded and preventing casualties. There’s no longer any medic team around, just wrecked badniks and his friends approaching.
Tails isn’t breathing. He doesn’t react to the speedster’s hand on his cheek. He doesn’t purr when his brother’s fingers run through his bangs. He doesn’t wake up when Sonic shouts his name begging him to please open his eyes.
Tails flatlined, but Sonic could tell his own heart threatening to stop.
He can’t hear anything. He can’t think. He can’t see anything but how still his little brother’s chest is.
He doesn’t think. He just knows he will not lose his little brother. Not now. Not ever. Not like this.
His body moves on his own when he practically rips a chaos emerald from Shadow’s hand, returning to his brother’s side not a second after, he doesn’t think even once about what doing next.
Sonic puts the chaos emerald over his kid’s small chest, right over his heart. Most would call what he made an “overpowered defibrillator”, but he knows he was just reaching for a miracle.
The miracle mercilessly shocks his kid.
One time, it doesn’t work. Two times, he can feel how the kit’s body can barely handle that much energy. Three times, his own hands are trembling, why is Tails face wet? It’s not even raining. Four times, someone’s yelling at him to stop, he’s only hurting Tails even more, he’s only damaging his body, but he can’t hear anything, Five times, he uses even more power, all his rage, desperation and… fear? Into that last shock.
Tails wakes up with a gasp. It worked.
It worked, Tails opened his eyes and started coughing loudly. Rough and harsh, but it meant he was alive, no wound visible anymore over his chest.
It worked, and that’s all that matters now.
Not how the skin in his hands got burned even through his gloves, not how his little brother’s eyes are no longer baby blue but an emerald green so much like his, not how long it took for Tails to actually look at him and answer when he asked if he was okay, not how he seemed more scared than confused about the fact that he was alive, not how even while Tails was fully awake and conscious Knuckles couldn’t find a pulse.
Tails is alive, and that’s all that matters.

There had to be something wrong with him.
The two tails were the most obvious. But there had to be something more. There had to be something wrong with him.
Why else did no one want him?
Little Miles curled up in the small cave he'd found for himself, burrowing in a pile of leaves he'd gathered up for a nest of sorts. The cave was far enough away from the village that no one should be able to find him here.
Why did they hate him so much?
He'd taken a few things, but that couldn't be the reason. They were mean to him before that. He only snatched scraps of food when he was really hungry because no one would give him anything and he couldn't find anything in the woods that was edible. And they'd already chased him away multiple times before he'd gotten that hungry that he'd risked sneaking back into the village to grab some food.
It had to be something else. Was it just the tails? Why? He loved his tails. They were warm and good for snuggling. He loved them. Or, he could love them. If it wasn't for everyone else telling him why he should hate them. He could never really hate them.
Maybe he was just a bad kid.
Bad kids took things. Bad kids got in the way. Bad kids weren't wanted.
Even his own parents didn't want him. He had only vague memories of them now, of golden-brown fur a little darker than his and loud voices that were angry a lot. He remembered them telling him to stay and wait, and then never coming back.
Maybe... if he'd waited just a little longer, just a couple more days, they would've come back. Maybe he was just a bad kid like that.
Maybe that's why no one could care about him.
Darkness was falling outside, separating his cave from the rest of the world. The night was always so empty and quiet, with no one around to protect him. He curled his two tails closer around himself, hugging them against his chest.
Was he always going to be alone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Tails?"
The fox glanced up at the sound of his favorite voice. Sonic was staring at him, head slightly tilted as he studied his face. "You okay, pal? You zoned out there for a sec."
"Yeah, yeah! Just got distracted."
Sonic chuckled and ruffled his bangs. "Imagine getting distracted," he said with a laugh, leaning backwards to lie on the picnic blanket. "I, for one, am ALWAYS focused."
Tails chuckled as he shifted. "Yeah, right."
He glanced around. It was a beautiful day in Green Hill, perfect for the Restoration (and friends) picnic that they'd set up as a celebration of foiling yet another world-ending catastrophe together. Amy, sitting on Sonic's other side, gave him a smile before returning back to whatever she and Sonic had been chatting about a minute ago. Knuckles was leaned back against a tree looking almost peaceful, until Rouge came and started poking at him. All of Team Dark had actually shown up, even Shadow, although he was sitting at the very outskirts avoiding conversation. Cream served out slices of cake to everyone. Her mom was cutting the slices while chatting cheerfully with Vector and the other Chaotix. Silver was showing off his telekinesis for Blaze by making a kite fly even though there was no wind. The Restoration girls; Whisper, Tangle, Belle, and even Jewel and Lanolin; had found all spots in the grass where they were chatting.
Sonic gave him another look, before stretching out his arm and patting the empty spot beside him. Tails grinned and shifted over next to Sonic, curling up into the spot that fit him perfectly. He rested his head on his brother's chest, hearing the soothing thrum of his speedy heartbeat. A comforting sound. The sound of safety, of home.
"You sure you're okay, little bro?" Sonic asked quietly.
"Yeah. I am."
He was more than okay, he realized, as he looked around at his friends. His tribe. His family.
He wasn't alone anymore.
Without One Another
This is a follow up drabble to What Big Brothers Fear The Most, which you can read here if you need context. It's optional but it is required pfffft.
TW: Mentions of death, grief, self hatred, implied/mentions self harm thoughts, swearing
-
Tails knocked on the door three times.
Just three, small thuds with his knuckles against his brother's door.
He hate to bother him, but after what happened a couple of minutes ago, he couldn't help but check up on Sonic.
He needed to make sure he's okay.
"Sonic?" Tails called. "Can I come in?"
After a moment of silence, Tails reconsidered knocking again. But kept moving his glove free hand away from the door, really hating to bother him.
He never bothered Sonic. He knew damn well. But it's two in the morning.
He should be asleep, not knocking at his door and especially not tinkering at his workbench. At least he didn't get scolded for that.
Again.
But it was all just so sudden for Sonic the Hedgehog to say all those things, which, to be fair, was something he needed to hear since forever, out of no where.
He did mention that he had a bad dream, and that he was okay now, but that's about it.
Tails felt like there is more to it than "just a bad dream" and "I'm fine now."
He did had a feeling on what that bad dream was about now.
He knocked again. Just like last time.
"Sonic?" He called, a little bit louder this time. Loud enough for him to hear from the other side, in case the real reason why Sonic didn't respond was because he couldn't hear him the first time.
"Do you mind if I come in and talk to you?" He asked, his ears pinning slowly.
He really didn't wanna bother him.
He's not bothering him. He is not bothering him.
No response again.
...He is, isn't he?
The fox sighed a heavy sigh. A tired one, even. He shouldn't be doing this at this hour. His sleep is much better than-
...Hell no. His sleep is not at all better than his brother's well being.
"I'm coming in." Tails says, before turning the knob and opening the door.
He wasn't ready to go in when he said that, but went in anyways, because he cares.
When the door is fully open, he could see the blue hedgehog himself, sitting on the edge of his bed with an exhausted look on his face, bags under his eyes and some sleep fluttering off his eyelashes.
He flinched slightly, not expecting a bright light coming through the doorway, since he was adjusted to the dark already. "Too bright." He grumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"Oops. Sorry." Tails says, before turning off the hallway lights he forgot to turn off before Sonic went to his room earlier.
"You, uh... You good, buddy?" He asked, a small weak grin rising on his muzzle, relived to see his brother looking somewhat calm, even though he's not asleep.
Though considering what happened, he doesn't blame him for not being asleep right now.
"Just wanted to check up on ya." He continued. "Got kinda worried back there." He scratched the back of his head, not sure on how to keep the conversation going.
He just wanted to talk to Sonic. To let him know that he's here.
"I'm fine." He says, turning his head to face his little brother, a clearly fake smile on his face, that did not match the tiredness in his emerald eyes.
"You sure?"
"I'm sure."
"...Alright then."
The hedgehog let out a loud, long yawn. It went on long enough for even Tails to yawn along with him. After that, Sonic laughed for a bit.
"It's spreading!" He chuckled, despite the tired sounding tone.
Tails giggled quietly. "Oh, noooooo." He "panicked," raising his hands in "fear." He snorted another laughter.
At least they're both laughing together.
"Ah..." Sonic sighed. It felt good to laugh again. "But, yeah, I am fine, little buddy," He reassured. "Just a little tired, is all," He rubbed his right eye.
"And nothing else is wrong?"
"...Nope."
... ...
He exhaled through his stuffed up nose.
"...Just can't sleep, I guess."
Aha. There it is.
Tails knew that Sonic was hiding something from him. He is terrible at hiding things. Very terrible.
Tails walked in his room finally and approached his bed. He stood by him, not sure if he should sit next to him.
"Something on your mind?" Tails casually asked.
"Yeah."
"Mind... telling me what's wrong, then?" Tails asked softly.
"..."
He could read the discomfort from the way his eyes lowered. He knew he didn't wanna talk about it, but sometimes it's better to talk about it than bottle it up.
Sonic kept forgetting about that.
But what ever happened in Sonic's dream messed him up really bad. He's aware that is was a dream, but it was still bothering him.
Must've been terrifying if he's not asleep at the moment.
"You don't have to talk about it," Tails says. "I just want you to know that I'm here in case you do want to talk about it."
The corner of Sonic's lips quivered.
He does.
He looked up at the little kit, his smile gave up and his eyes look sad and restless. Tails frowned slightly, not enjoying seeing his buddy like this.
"It's about my nightmare," he began. "and what happened in it..."
"Okay..." Tails says, sitting down next to him, listening.
"I was fighting Metal and you were in the air fighting some Badniks," He continued. "when suddenly I was caught in an explosion. Infinite was there and... he cut my..."
He placed his hand where his throat is, not wanting to complete his sentence as for a second he remembered how painful that attack was.
Which is absurd, because he's pretty sure he weren't supposed to feel pain in dreams. But sometimes, he does, and it's pretty screwed up.
"I go down and you arrived at a pretty bad time." Sonic says. "I was bleeding out, and you... look so scared." His hands lightly grabbed on hold of the sheets, refusing to look back at the moment. Yet, he did.
Tails was listening to every word he has to say, and he looked more uncomfortable and concerned the more Sonic continued with the story.
"You were crying. You were screaming for me. And... I died right there in your arms. Leaving you all alone..."
He looked away to his right, not wanting to look at his little brother after saying that. He knew that Tails was a little frightened by those words.
And he was.
"I remember you saying something like, 'Don't leave me,' or 'I don't want to be alone.'" His ears pinned down to his head. "But I think the worst thing you said was... 'I can't live without you.'"
Tails' eyes rose.
Sonic sits up and let out a heavy, shaky sigh. He never wanted to tell him what his own brother said to him in his dream. It just doesn't make any sense. It was just a nightmare, so why would it be so stressful?
It didn't happen. It never will.
But...
When he looked back at Tails, there was worry.
Nothing but worry.
Sonic wanted to punch himself in the face so bad for doing this to his little baby brother.
"I was the only family you had, and... you lost it." He muttered out, almost sounding emotionless, yet there was a hint of grief. "You literally cannot live without me. Yet, I know you can take care of yourself, but... I've done so much for you... I never really thought about these kinds of things, but I-..."
He stopped himself, huffing out again and placing his hands on his face, his elbows supporting on his knees. "It's just pissing me off that this nightmare is scaring me this badly." His voice muffled through his hands.
"None of that happened!" He turned back at him, his voice raised. "I didn't die and you weren't saying all those... awful things. I know you would never say that, even if I did-"
"Don't say it."
A small crack in the young one's voice is all it takes to just... break his heart into two.
"You're right about me being independent, but... You have done so much for me, and you are the first person in my life who liked me, and didn't ditch me or hurt me because of my two tails." He says. "And I know I also have Amy, Knuckles, Blaze, everybody... but you... are so important to me, and you always will be, no matter how old I get."
"I know." He often forget that he'll always be important to Tails. Not just for when he's a kid. Not just for right now.
"I know almost every day, we face crazy challenges and go on wild adventures, but we also had some close calls. Like, very close calls. Times where we nearly lost you." Tails continued. "And that one time..." He paused. "...We did lose you."
Sonic exhaled again.
"I thought I could handle it. For the first couple of months. I really did. But..." He sniffled. "Going so long without the one person who will always be there for me, without the one person who changed, saved, my life, without the one person who made me happy to be me... to be alive..."
Sonic shuts his eyes tight.
"Everyone at the Resistance was there, but... you weren't. I thought, we thought, you were dead, Sonic..." He choked quietly. "We believed that for months. I believed that for months. About the third month in, I just... couldn't stand being in a picture that you weren't in."
Sonic hates himself so much right now.
"It's just not the same without my hero." He spoke up. "One night, I just ran away from the Resistance. I was all by myself. Just like my first few years. I wailed, I screamed, I wished that everything that happened around that time was all a horrible, horrible nightmare that I was having, and I would wake up, to you, comforting me, letting me know that everything is okay and that you wouldn't leave me."
You ruined everything, Sonic. The hedgehog scolded himself.
"But..." He continued. "Reflecting on myself after that night, I stood back up and fought on my own, not wanting to have another episode like that... Well, at least I tried to fight back. I can fight back, but... How could I if a part of myself was ripped out of me?"
Dark Gaia...
"I can't say that I can't live without you, but... the world would be a much cruel place without you." Tails says, tears stinging his ocean blue eyes. "If I never have met you, my life would be a living hell. Really. I would never be happy to be me if I never met someone like you. Or just, you at all. I am grateful to have met you, Sonic."
Tails exhaled, not wanting to cry. He couldn't help but shed a few tears anyways. He needed to at this point.
"I'd say that... I would react the same way if you did d- ...you know." He hated saying that word. It felt like if he did say that word, it would happen for real. Which, he knew it's not true, but still...
Sonic placed a hand on his cheek, sighing again. He felt so disappointed in himself, as a brother. If he couldn't beaten Infinite, knowing what he was capable of, then Tails wouldn't have gone through all that mess.
Good Lord, he was only a child. What is up with the universe trying to give this kid hell? He has done nothing wrong!
Why is he failing so hard?
A gross sniffle was heard from Sonic as he covered his face entirely, ready to cry again. It startled Tails.
"Sonic?" He says, reaching his hand out. "A-Are you okay-?"
"No, Tails." He barked. "I'm not okay. I suck! I suck at being there for you when you needed me the most! I knew damn well that I mean a lot to you, and if I could've just kick Infinite's- ...Grrrr!" He nearly failed to hold in his tears, but especially his resent towards himself.
He was important to everybody. But especially Tails.
And he failed to do the most important thing. Look after his baby brother.
"I knew the Eggman War was bad for you, but I didn't know it was this bad... You just didn't tell me these things and- ... ..."
A thought popped in his head. A thought that should never come up to him.
No. He wouldn't. He's too young. He fucking wouldn't.
"Sonic?"
The young voice made him snap back to reality for a brief moment. He turned his head to face him. Sonic was horrified of what he is about to ask him.
"I need you to be honest with me, Miles." He warned, never sounding so serious in his life.
"O-Okay...?"
"Tails... At any point during the Eggman War, have you ever attempted to hurt yourself...?"
" ... ...WHAT?!!"
The question gave Tails a major shock, and even a small jolt down his spine. "ARE YOU INSANE?! Why the heck would y- WHY THE- HOW COULD YOU ASK ME THAT?!" He shrieked, now off the bed and back on his feet, yelling at him.
"Those months were stressful for me, but I didn't try to- What the FUCK, Sonic!!" He sobbed.
Okay, out of ALL the swear words, he should NEVER, EVER use that word, but Sonic was so speechless and scared that he couldn't even give him that warning tone in his voice whenever he swears.
"I-I'm sorry! I was just- I was worried, and-"
"OF COURSE I didn't attempt that! God, just because I can't live without you, doesn't mean I LITERALLY can't! Wh-Why... Oh, my Gaia..." Tails covered his mouth. "I... This is my fault. I should've told you about what I was going through in the first place, but I made you assume... Oh, my Gaia, I'm so sorry, Sonic." He softly cried, crushed from the fact that Sonic was this worried about him right now.
The hedgehog loves him too much.
He hated the idea that Sonic was worried about his own brother doing... that to himself. Granted, that one night was the most stressful of them all, that he nearly thought of it, but he didn't. He refuse to think that way. That's why he kept fighting.
Cause he knew fully well that's not what Sonic wanted, alive or not.
And he was right. Sonic wouldn't want that.
If he wouldn't want that, then neither would Tails.
"No. Don't apologize. Please." Sonic stood up as well, his voice breaking. "It's not your fault-"
"Well, it's not your fault either, Sonic!" Tails croaked. "Neither of us saw it coming! Especially me!"
"I just wished you would've told me about how you were feeling- I mean, you never really told me until we were on the Starfall Islands, but-"
"I thought it wouldn't matter because everything is okay-"
"YOU THINK I'M OKAY WITH YOU HIDING ALL THIS FROM ME?" He roared, tears beginning to stream. "YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO ME, GOD DAMMIT! YOU MEAN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE TO ME! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!"
Tails never felt terrified of his big brother's voice.
"I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU!"
... ...
... ...
Tails hiccuped. Sonic panted. No words can be exchanged. Only looks.
Sad, hurt, protective looks.
The hedgehog huffed. Feeling worse than he already was. But he didn't care. All he ever cared about was his little two-tailed brother.
"You've done a lot for me, Tails." He spoke. His voice was dying out but he couldn't care less. "All my life I thought being a hero is just doing everything yourself and taking care of yourself, but I was wrong. I never realized how wrong I was until I met you."
The fox sniffled, listening to every, little word from his hero.
"Without you, I probably would never have found the Chaos Emeralds, or stop the Death Egg, or save Angel Island, or stop Perfect Chaos, any of that stuff! My life would never be the same if I never met you. In fact, I'm not even sure if I would make it out alive without you."
His voice was trembling, but for the first time in a long time, he didn't care that he was crying in front of someone.
"You made a huge impact on my life, Tails. I owe you everything. Really..." He barely showed off such a sweet smile, but he's so tired and drained from yelling and just, staying up so late, he couldn't find the energy to smile at all right now.
"I am grateful to have you as my brother. And I know I don't say this a lot, but I think about it every time I see my friends, including you... I love you. I love you til the stars twinkle their last shine" A small sob escaped when he spoke the last couple of words.
He meant every word.
"And you wanna know something? Even if, I did die, I'm not really gone, okay? I will remain with you and everyone else forever, whether I'm in person or in spirit. I will always be in your heart and I will always love you, Miles "Tails" Prower."
He held both of Tails' hands as he began to cry. The young fox cried along with him, hearing the last sentence on loop in his head.
He really meant every, single word.
The two brothers embraced in a big hug. The biggest hug they could ever give for each other. Sonic held onto Tails for dear life as he finally sobbed loud enough for even the critters from outside to hear.
Tails hiccuped and cried continuously, not wanting to let go of the one person who changed his life for the better.
For once, they both wish this hug would last forever.
They don't care if they stayed up all night, they refuse to let each other go.
They cannot live without one another.
-
Two things woke Tails up; the sounds of birds chirping outside the window, and Sonic's monstrous snoring.
He tried to open one eye, but it was all blurry and covered in sleep. "Aw, geez... Why did I cry so much...?" He jokingly asked to himself, rubbing his eyes.
He sits up and was about to get off of the bed, but Sonic's snoring startled him a bit and he turned to see him snuggling against one of his pillows.
He looks so goofy, he thought to himself.
He's happy that Sonic's finally getting some good sleep.
Tails looked around to find himself in Sonic's room. When was the last time he slept in Sonic's room?
Old habits die hard, apparently.
"Zzzzzz... n-no chili..." Tails turned his head back the moment he heard him muttered something. "ZZZzzz, no mm chili dogs, 'm full. Thk you fr askin' though, Vanilla, zzzzzz..." He slurred.
Dreaming about chili dogs. Of course he is. Tails snickered.
He looked at the time and it read 11:38. Tails was surprised on how much or the morning is left. Him and Sonic stayed up for so long, just doing nothing but crying and hugging.
Didn't sound like a lot, but it was a long night regardless.
They needed to be there for each other, and it took them this long enough to finally have a moment with each other.
And even after all this time, Tails is still Tails, and Sonic is still Sonic.
And they're still brothers.
What a time to be alive.
"Yo. Big bro." Tails poked Sonic's cheek to wake him up.
"Mmmaybe one more bite wouldn't hurt..." Sonic mumbled before nibbling on his hand.
Tails covered his mouth, quieting down his laughter. Oh, this is his morning coffee. This is entertainment.
He needed this laugh.
"Sonic, wake up. You're dreaming." He hate to ruin the moment, but he needed to wake his brother up. He didn't want him to sleep through the day.
When Sonic's eyes open, the first thing he could see was most of his hand in his mouth. His eyes rose in confusion before he sits up, getting the hand out of his mouth and spitting out in disgust.
"What the heck was I doing??" He cried. Tails was laughing so hard he almost fell off the bed.
"Tails, please don't tell me you saw the whole thing!" Sonic felt so silly. He always known he spoke in his sleep, but this is ridiculous.
"Relax, Sonic. Everyone chews on their own hand in their sleep at some point in their lives." Tails says, getting up and already heading out of the door.
"Doubt that..."
"Yet here it are."
"Shut it." Sonic kept himself from laughing.
He gets up too, putting on his chili dog themed slippers, reading to start the day. "Geez, what a night... I felt like a crybaby."
"Hey. Don't say that." Tails spoke, turning to the hedgehog. "It's okay to cry. I can tell you've been needing to let it out for some time now."
"Yeah..." Sonic said in agreement. He scratched the back of his ear, feeling bad. "Hey, I'm sorry for telling you about all that stuff. I didn't mean to bring you down like that. My nightmare was pretty messed up and-"
"Sonic. It's okay." Tails reassures with a genuine smile. "It's okay to feel and talk about certain things. I'm glad that you get to talk to me about it. Even if it was messy, we still talked it out."
"Yeah." Sonic says, smiling as well. "Thanks. For being there for me."
"I should be thanking you, dude. But, you're welcome. Anything for my big bro!"
He opened the door and walked out. "I'm getting breakfast ready! You hungry?" He called out from outside the room.
"Some waffles sound pretty good!" Sonic replied out loud.
"Okay, cool!" The kit says.
Sonic chuckled softly. He still felt silly after his and Tails' talk, but at the same time, he felt a lot better now.
He may not be used to talking about his feelings, but at least his little buddy was there to listen to him all the way through.
He truly is grateful to have a brother like Tails.
HAPPY WHOLESOME SONIC AND TAILS WEDNESDAY BABEYYYYY!!!!!!!!
It's been like a million years since I've actually been able to post a fic for Wednesday, but I've got one!! I've finally got one!!
HERE YA GO, GUYS!!!
---------------
"Girl Talk"
(this takes place in the Sonic Boom universe, after the episode "Cowbot")
It had only been yesterday when Sonic and Tails had found themselves spending a day and a half over at their lair of their supposed arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, to help him repair his defenses. Sonic still wasn't sure why they'd bothered helping the guy, considering he was always trying to destroy him and his pals.
Well, he supposed that was a hero's duty. Help everyone. Even if they didn't deserve it at all.
Beyond the fact that they were helping their enemy, probably the thing that had caught Sonic the most off guard was Eggman's completely unexpected question at the campfire.
"What's up with you and Amy?"
He'd had absolutely no idea how to respond to that. In fact, he'd never responded. He'd just made some lame attempt to change the subject, though he no longer remembered what he'd said to do so.
What was even more nerve-wracking? Tails had looked just as interested to hear the answer.
Sonic stared at the ceiling of his shack as he reclined uneasily in his hammock. Pfffft, he had no reason to get so flustered over such a silly question. He was Sonic the Hedgehog! He feared nothing! He especially didn't fear something as simple as love, and attachment, and relationships . . . ? Right?!
"Why do you look like you just got back from Meh Burger?" a familiar voice called teasingly, and he jolted upwards, almost toppling off the hammock.
Tails was walking through his empty doorframe, a gleam in his bright blue eyes and his twin tails waving up and down behind him.
"It's nothing!" Sonic protested, standing up and stretching, overall trying to act as casual and relaxed as possible. "Just thinking."
"About whaaat?" The tone couldn't get any more teasing. "About who?"
"I don't know what you mean," he tried to bluff, but the little fox's eyes glinted at him knowingly.
Sonic sighed heavily.
His little brother knew him far too well.
"Fine, fine, fine." Sonic waved a hand, then glanced around nervously. "Can we just take this somewhere more . . . private?"
"We can go to my lab?" Without waiting for an answer, Tails turned and helicoptered away back towards his workshop. Sonic took off after him, reaching the place at least five seconds before his brother did.
"So . . . what is up with you and Amy?" Tails asked once the door was closed and the windows were locked, quite clearly repeating Eggman's words.
"Amy's just a really good friend!" Sonic tried to protest. "Yeah, yeah, she's got a thing for me, but that doesn't mean I reciprocate!"
Tails shot him a look. "So you know she likes you, and yet you don't discourage her, you hang out with her alone, you're always making jokes and puns around her and waiting for her reaction, and you even go to the movies together?"
"Those are all normal friend activities!" Sonic practically screeched, his voice high-pitched with desperation. "Sure, I like being with her. She's a great person. And she's a great friend. And a cool fighter. And she's strong. And independent. And . . . well . . ."
Sonic trailed off, realizing his argument no longer was making sense, all he'd done was go on a tangent about all the things he liked about Amy, and Tails' smirk was as smug as ever.
But when his brother finally replied, it wasn't as teasing as he'd expected. "She makes you happy, doesn't she? The way Zooey makes me happy?"
"You're not old enough to be giving me advice on girls," Sonic grumbled.
"I'm not the one running from my feelings," Tails pointed out.
Sonic made a frustrated noise.
"Okay fiiine, I guess I do kinda sorta like her. So what?"
"So . . . ?!" Tails bounced up and down a couple times. "You should go ask her out!"
"But I don't actually know what I'm doing when it comes to girls!" Sonic complained. "Yeah, Amy's not the only girl to have ever liked me, but I've never actually had a girlfriend. How are you even supposed to treat them? And doesn't being in a relationship mean getting tied down somewhere and not having freedom anymore? I'm not even sure I want a relationship, Tails."
"That's not what relationships are about," his brother argued. "They're about love, duh. Choosing to love and care for that one person. Finding happiness and contentment in each other's company. Putting their needs before yours, because they're special to you." Tails' blue eyes gleamed. "Isn't Amy special to you?"
"Well, I guess, yeah," Sonic mumbled, kicking at an imaginary rock on the ground. "I just . . . I don't think I'm ready for a girlfriend, at least not yet. Can't I just give it some time?"
Tails snickered. "Of course you can. There's no rush. I just wanted to make sure you understood this stuff."
"This feels backwards." Sonic sighed, but grinned. "Okay. Ya got me, lil bro. But!" He jumped up and grabbed his brother by the wrist. "Everything that was just said is entirely confidential! Got it? No breaking the bro code!"
"I know, I know!" Tails laughed, squirming away as Sonic started playfully poking him all over. "Understood!"
wholesome sonic and tails wednesday!! I will try to post this on ao3 asap as well, but for now, enjoy this fic, inspired by the unleashed dark sonic au i talked abt a bit the other day. It may not look like it, but it does get wholesome, I promise :,) hope you like this! (2.3k words)
---------------------------------------
He liked it. The rush of adrenaline running through his veins, which were overflowed by this new form of energy he still hadn’t gotten accustomed to, making him go faster than his inhibitions would ever let him go. The blurriness that took over his sight, adding to his excitement; it was always fun living in the present, not worrying about what the future brings or what hurdles keep you from reaching top speeds.
He didn’t need to worry about any of that, not in this form.
Super Sonic was one thing. He would move fast but purposefully, shining bright in the night sky when he’d fight in space, much like a shooting star that would ultimately lose its glow. The hope that he would spread however, would remain forever in the people’s hearts and everyone would follow it like a beam in the darkness of anguish and distress. He truly was a shooting star, making wishes come true.
But this form? He moved fast, too fast for the naked eye to notice, too fast for his moves to be comprehended. Glowing bright, like the darkest of nights, like a black hole depriving the worlds of their life and of their light. Hope was a thing unknown for him, something he didn’t care about, something he didn’t need because he knew he had the power to accomplish anything he wanted, he didn’t need a wish to make it come true.
If he wanted to break the light barrier, he would, not caring if that endangered his world or if he spread fear across the globe.
And that’s what he was about to do.
It was dark. Too dark. The only thing that lit his path was the moonlight. But the limited light would not stop him from noticing. Even his regular form would be able to grasp that little detail on the horizon. Every form of Sonic would, in every universe.
Because what else would be barely shining under the moonlight in a yellow hue…except from Tails?
rain sucks man [a soft and comforting sonic and tails fic about them being bros]
ship:none
story count:1
au;main -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
it was late at night, the rain was pouring outside and everyone in the team sonic house was fast asleep. it was peaceful, it was quiet. until BOOM! lightning strikes, waking tails. who was sleeping at his work desk [again]. he scurried to his well-known safe place, aka sonic. he goes into sonics room where sonics already waiting for him with open arms, tails runs to sonic and hugs him. he softly crys into sonics sweater, clinging onto him in the hug.
"shh lil buddie, it ok," sonic says in a comforting and soft voice "your ok, it's just some lightning. it'll pass soon". he holds tails close and lets him wrap his tails around his arm, and tails soon starts to calm down and then starts to drift off to sleep. sonic sets tails next to him in his bed and covers him up. then goes to sleep himself.
It's the next day and sonic wakes up to amy making breakfast as usual. "hey sonic" amy says in a warm tone "how'd things go, I heard it was storming last night. is tails ok?". sonic nods and says "yeah, he was a bit scared but I calmed him down." he smiles then says "he still sleeping, curled up right where I left him". amy smiles as well and says "well that's good to hear". and soon enough tails groggily comes in, holding one of his tails like a blanket, making soft little tired yips.
"heh, good morning sleepy fox," sonic says with a soft chuckle "ya sleep ok? he also asks. tails nods as he climbs into the chair next to sonic, who pats tail's head with another chuckle. amy then places a plate of waffles in front of both boys "hope you guys like em," she says with a smile. "thanks names we will" replies sonic returning her smile with one of his own. he and tails both start eating their pancakes. chatting and hanging out. just like a hero and his little hero brother should. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
tail wags
Sonic’s ear flicked at the sound of grass rustling behind as he rolled up the two sleeping bags. He was trying to rush so they could get on the move again, having gotten up and moving pretty late today. It had been a lazy morning for the two of them. Instead of running and flying down the road, the two had cuddled up and spent the early sunlight talking about whatever came to mind. Neither of them were really up to being too active today, but the hedgehog knew better than to stay in one spot for too long.
So he forced them up, but let the kid sit out of packing up to stretch his tails before they moved out. It was strange how hard it was to get on his feet this morning, the weight of the kid on his chest more comforting than he ever thought it could be. He didn’t like touching other people. He tried not to let it show around the kid, but physical contact made him want to physically curl away and bolt. He didn’t really get why, but it just wasn’t for him. Or– he thought it wasn’t for him. But somehow that kid managed to blow his mind again. It was insane how often he did that, but he supposes that’s just a trait you have to have in order to keep up with the fastest thing alive. There was more rustling, so Sonic decided to turn around and look at what was the cause of it. His brow furrowed as a confused smile curved his muzzle as he found the cause of the gentle noise.
Tails had his tails pinned against the ground, face scrunched up in annoyance. He hadn’t noticed the tween was looking at him, his attention fully on the two fluffy appendages. His ear flicked a few times, showing he was trying to solve something. "Whatcha doin, bud?" He asked, snorting when the fox jumped. The kit’s ears swiveled before focusing in on Sonic, his head soon turning to look over at him. "My tails aren't listening." He said, lifting a hand to point at his namesakes which allowed one of them to slip free. It started wagging behind him, causing him to huff and reach around to try and catch it. "Whaddya mean they aren't listening?" Sonic asked as he stuffed the sleeping bags into the backpack. It was a tight fit with the two of them, but he learned how to work around it. When they first started traveling together Tails had insisted he slept on the ground, but the tween refused. He lent his to the kid for the first few weeks until he had saved enough money to buy another. Sometimes he would still find loose fox hair in it. "They keep moving when I think about you even though I’m not telling them to!" The fox complained, having successfully recaptured his rogue tail. He held it and the other to his chest, but they still twitched excitedly against him. "Awh, kid.” A fond laugh was pulled out of the older as he walked over to the kid. Tails’ ear flicked as he approached, “They're wagging. Just means you're happy" He explained, reaching down to affectionately muse the kid’s bangs. "But it's never happened before," Tails said, frowning at the appendages. “It’s weird.” “Nah, it’s happened.” Sonic shook his head. He imagined it hasn’t happened much in the kid’s life yet, but he’d definitely caught the twin tails thrashing giddily behind him. “I’ve seen ‘em do it.” That got him to look up, brow furrowed as he soaked up the new information. He was like a little sponge, though squeezing him wouldn’t get him to let go of all the things he’d learned. You’d probably have to pry it straight out of his brain. “What about you? Does your tail ever wag?” The kit asked, head tilting enough to cause his ears to flop over. Sonic shrugged, reaching out to tug at one of the ears despite the swats he received from the younger’s hands. “Sure it does,” He said, snorting when the kid shook his head to free his ear from the hedgehog’s hold which caused it to hit him in the face. “You just haven’t seen it cause it’s small.” “I’ve never seen my tails wag.” Tails pointed out, glancing back at the mentioned appendages. His lips pursed as he considered the new information before turning to look at the tween again and pulled a face. “Are you lying again like you did with the Easter Bunny?” Sonic laughed at that, having forgotten about the times he tried to tell the kid about the usual holiday characters. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t convince the kid things like the Tooth Fairy existed. The first time Tails lost one of his teeth Sonic had tried to swap it out for a few mobiums. It took quite a while to even convince the kid to put it under his pillow, but the promise of mint candy got him to comply. Sonic had done a good enough job at being quiet when sneaking around to his sleeping bag, but no amount of silence could get that tooth without waking the kit up. The second the tween had touched his pillow, Tails shot into a sitting position as if expecting it to have been a badnik. There was just no way to get that kid to believe in them. It didn’t help that he held pretty much all the logic in the world in his tiny, 5 year old brain. Every time Sonic tried to make up a lie for one of Tails’ questions he’d get debunked.
“Nah, this one’s true, keed.” He shook his head, reaching around to poke one of the tails. It twitched in response, “You’re too little to keep all your happiness in ya, which causes your tails to wag.” Sometimes it was odd to teach the kid things outside of breaking badniks. It shouldn’t be. He was 5. He was at the age when kids would go to school to start their journey in learning what they needed to know as they grew up. Tails hummed, searching the older’s face to try and find something that would indicate that he wasn’t telling the truth. “That seems.. weird.” He decided, face scrunching as he tried to work it out in his head. “I have a way to prove it to ya.” Sonic grinned, knowing that Tails would really not like this idea. But curiosity blinded him of the mischief brewing in the older, his head tipping to the side in a silent question. They usually didn’t ask or say things that were obvious in their body language. Neither of them saw the point in it. “Tickling.” His grin widened. He enjoyed messing with the kid, being purposefully dramatic to get any sort of laugh out of him. Really, he just enjoyed hearing it. He wasn’t really sure why, but it was a more calming sound than anything nature could provide. “No!” The fox’s reaction was instant. He was in the air in a second, out of the hedgehog’s reach. Sonic laughed up at him, rising to his feet while holding his hands up in a mock surrender. “Alright, alright, I won’t.” He promised, nodding at the kit to land back down. Tails’ eyes narrowed, but he did as he was told. His feet softly touched the ground a few steps away from the tween for good measure, but it didn’t really matter when you considered the older’s speed. But Sonic was a hedgehog of his word, so instead of poking at the kit he settled for a hair ruffle. His hand was still swatted away with a pout anyway, but the twin tails swayed happily behind the kid. “See?” He pointed at the appendages, smiling as the younger blinked at them. “You just don’t realize when it happens.” Tails considered them for a few moments more before frowning. “I really don’t think they used to do that.” He mumbled, watching as his tails wagged. Sonic frowned as well, how could a kid go so long without ever feeling happy enough for his tails to wag? They shared a silence for a few seconds until the kit suddenly beamed, grinning up at the hedgehog. “Maybe they were broken and you fixed them!” And oh, if that didn’t make his heart swell up in the most painful way. Nothing about this kid was broken. Being born a little different wasn’t a bad thing and he hated that this poor kid had been convinced it was. If anyone was bad or broken it was that stupid village. They were the ones who tormented a child because they didn’t like that he stood out a little. But he didn’t mention it. Tails never did like talking about Westside, so Sonic tried to avoid it whenever he could. “I’unno. Maybe they just now figured it out.” The kid shook his head at that, smile still bright as ever, “They couldn’t have, I didn’t even know they were broken in the first place. Well— I did, but not like that.” “Okay–“ It was Sonic’s turn to shake his head before crouching down to be at eye level with the fox. “They weren’t broken, kiddo. They just needed a second to catch up.” He said, voice firm as he placed a hand on the younger’s shoulder. Tails’ head tilted again as he thought those words over, “..Like me on our runs?” “Exactly!” Sonic grinned, he didn’t even think of making that connection. “Nothin’ wrong with it, they just needed time.” The fox pursed his lips and nodded, satisfied with that answer so the tween ruffled his bangs as he stood back up. With his hands on his hips, he glanced around at what remained of their little campsite.
He had packed up everything, but the light indents in the grass still outlined where everything was. “Speaking of our runs, I think it’s ‘bout time we blow this joint.” He said, turning to look back at the kit with a hand outstretched, “whaddya say, keed?” Tails beamed back, his smaller hand immediately grabbing the older’s with a large smile, “Let’s speed!"
What's Been Held In (Chapter 1/4)
Heyoo,after seeing all the wonderful content for "Wholesome Sonic and Tails Wednesday," I decided to join in the fun! So, i figured what better way to do that than dusting the cobwebs of and sprucing up an old wip,lol! so without further ado, enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mind heavy and not emotionally ready to face Sonic head-on, Tails took out a pen and paper and began writing what he'd been keeping to himself for what felt far too long.
What do you think of me as a person? Honestly, I mean.
For so long, I was tormented and teased for things I couldn't control.
I was made to feel abnormal and foreign no matter what I did.
Even now, I feel a… a… disconnection (hmm… I think that's a good word for it) Between me and all of you guys.
It often feels like my only worth; my only meaning and purpose are tinkering and inventing machines to help on our adventures. (Not to say that's anyone's fault!) I just….we all have limitations, and I think in my case, there's kind of too many to call myself a "hero" or an asset unless I'm off building something.
Which is why I wanted an honest opinion of myself from someone I trust,
…Look, please don't worry or anything about this, Sonic. I've just had it on my mind for a while and wanted to know how I came off to you and the others. I promise I'm ok
( I think)
~ Sincerely, Miles "Tails" Prower~
