Emma’s never cared about holidays or cliched traditions like kissing someone at midnight on New Year’s Eve. What she would like, however, is for her boyfriend to at least be in the same city so she could have the option.

“Twenty.” “That’s what you’re going with? An even twenty?”
“Aye.”
“When has it ever been an even number? That’s too neat.”
“I’m a neat man.”
“You’re a stupid man is what you are.”
“Now, Swan, you’re supposed to kill people with kindness, not insults.”
Emma huffs and grabs her beanie off of her desk and tugs it down over her ears, adjusting her bun so that it doesn’t tug at her head. “You don’t get to say that when you were an asshole to me last night.” “I was not an asshole.”
“You were.”
“Love, you call me asshole more than you call me by my own name.”
“That’s because I’m a romantic.”
Killian chuckles, and Emma doesn’t fight the urge to roll of her eyes. Of course he would laugh at that. Of course. But she doesn’t blame him. She’s not a romantic. It’s not that she’s never tried or doesn’t want to be one – though some days she really doesn’t – but she doesn’t know how to do it. It’s not in her DNA, and her version of romantic is nothing more than eating the meal Killian wants and then cuddling on the couch or listening to him tell her some story she’s already heard at least two times. It never feels like enough, but he always tells her that it is.
He’s much better at things like planning date nights and picking out perfect gifts and romantic gestures, both grand and small, and her being good at those things is probably never going to be in the cards.
“So twenty calls asking you to come check out the illegal fireworks because people can’t seem to wait for the city-approved show over the harbor?”
“I’m going to go with thirty-three,” Emma finally says, grabbing her gloves and tugging them onto her hands. “It was twenty-nine last year.”
“Ah, yes, and people have become crazier this year then?”
“Exactly.”
There’s a moment of silence and then another, and Emma drops down into her desk chair, flopping on the leather. She should really go and meet David and get ready to do patrol, but she doesn’t want to, not yet.
“Swan?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you,” Killian says, his voice soft and quiet as it comes over her phone’s speaker. “Please be safe out there tonight.”
“Always, KJ,” she promises just like she does before every shift. “I love you, too. Happy New Year. I hope you have fun at Robin’s party while you guys stay inside to watch the ball drop when you’re twenty minutes away from Time’s Square.”
He breathes out through his nose with his laugh. “I’m sure I’ll be home and in bed before the clock strikes midnight. It’s too cold to be out like that.”
“That’s because you’re the oldest twenty-eight-year-old in the world.”
“No, it’s because I have to be up in the morning for my rounds. I’m starting in a new department, remember?”
“I know, I know.” “Emma,” David calls out, and she snaps her head up to look at David across the bullpen, “it’s time to go.”
“I’ll be right there,” she says to David before standing from her seat. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay? Happy New Year.”
“Happy New Year, love.”
“That your big, fancy New York boyfriend?”
“Shut it, Scarlet,” Emma mumbles, ignoring Will and his teasing smirk to walk toward David.
“So it was him?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Tell him to bring some more of those bagels next time he comes to visit. That was a real thoughtful gesture.”
Emma huffs and keeps ignoring Will to walk toward David, pushing past him to go out the front doors of the station so she can start her patrol shift and get this night over with.
Happy New Year and all that.
-/-
“What number call is that?”
“Nine.”
“That’s pretty low for the night.”
“Yeah, well, it is only eight. We’ve still got hours to go and several people who don’t care to follow the fireworks law.”
David hums and turns the wheel of the SUV so they can get out of downtown Boston and move toward North End. Holidays are always the craziest nights of the years for them. It’s triple the regular crazy, especially with the amount of drunk drivers they pull over, but all in all, holidays are some of Emma’s favorite nights of the year, even if she has to work through them. And she’s worked pretty much every holiday for the past five years. She’s not married, doesn’t have kids, doesn’t have parents, and there’s no reason for her to not offer to take a shift so that someone who wants to spend time with their family can have the day off.
(She can take her days off on other days where stores are actually open and she can get delivery without feeling guilty that the delivery guy is working.)
Emma’s never had a reason to want to spend holidays with people or to want to have the day off, but then she met Killian last year at the Nolan’s fourth of July barbecue (which actually happened on the sixth, but whatever), and she wants to have a day off to spend time with him.
But that doesn’t work anyways. She’s in Boston, he’s in New York, and their schedules don’t match up for holidays. Random weekends and Emma using her vacation days in the middle of the week, sure, but holidays, not so much.
God, she misses him.
“Why are you staring out the window?”
“Hmmm?”
“Why are you staring out the window?” David repeats. “You’re looking all starry eyed and such.”
Emma snaps out of her thoughts and adjusts her position in her seat until she’s turning the sound of David’s podcast down. He’s listening to one on how to keep your rooftop garden intact, and of all of his podcasts, this is the one she’s least interested in.
“Nothing. I think I’m just tired. Can we stop for a coffee next time we pass a shop?”
“Sure. No problem.”
David doesn’t question her more or bother her for the rest of her shift. Either he knows she doesn’t want to talk about it or is so damn oblivious that he doesn’t realize there’s something she might want to talk about, but Emma isn’t going to complain, not when the shift keeps going by as quickly as humanly possible.
They make traffic stops and deal with phone calls about loud music and illegal fireworks (they’re at twenty-one now) and drink copious amounts of coffee as Emma keeps yawning.
(She also eats two giant bear claws, but she doesn’t really like falling into the stereotype of cops simply sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts.)
At two minutes until midnight, the world quiets for a bit, everyone captivated by watching the ball drop on television or settling around the harbor for city-approved fireworks that knock your socks off with the view. Or maybe they’re all too busy drinking or finding someone to kiss. That’s what David is doing. The kiss part. Not the drinking on the job. That’d get him fired.
Mary Margaret meets them in the parking lot of a gas station, and she and David stand close together in the cold, flakes of snow falling down around them as they talk and laugh until fireworks go off at midnight so they can kiss like the cheesy, sentimental fools that they are.
The sentimental fools who are in love enough that Mary Margaret would come out in the cold just to kiss her husband at midnight when she could kiss him when he got home.
Emma’s cheeks heat with blush when she realizes that she’s watching them, and she quickly turns away and looks down at her phone to open up her texts. Killian hasn’t texted her back for an hour or so now, and she knows that he’s asleep. He’s always falling asleep early in order to wake up early, whether he has work or not, and it kind of drives her crazy.
“I like to watch the sun rise, love. It’s a beautiful beginning to my day every time, but not as beautiful as you.”
“I can’t tell if that was cheesy or romantic.”
“Both. Definitely both.”
He may not see it, but she texts him anyways.
Emma: Happy New Year! 😘
“Happy New Year, Emma,” Mary Margaret says, popping up next to Emma’s window and scaring the absolute shit out of her. “I brought you guys some grilled cheese sandwiches to keep you warm.”
“You’re an actual saint.”
“That’s the goal.”
Emma laughs, and it’s not a fake one despite the heavy pit in her stomach, and accepts the foil wrapped sandwiches from Mary Margaret. “Thank you, Marg. Now go home and be safe, okay?”
“The same to you guys. Enjoy the sandwiches.”
-/-
It’s a quarter until five when she walks in the front door of her apartment. The lights are dimmed, her black-out curtains pulled in preparation for the sun rising, and after a night that never seemed to end toward the last few hours of her shift, she’s finally home and ready to go to sleep.
She didn’t wear makeup today, so that means she can go to sleep without washing her face and brushing her teeth, right? (Emma knows that it’s gross, but she doesn’t care.
She’ll brush her teeth three times tomorrow.)
Toeing her shoes off and dropping her keys and her wallet onto the entryway table, Emma starts moving in her apartment only to hear the creaking of footsteps on the other side of her place.
Shit.
Quickly, she turns on her heels and moves to find something, anything to use as a weapon. Her police-issued gun is in her locker at the precinct and the one she keeps at home is in her bedside drawer. All she can see that would be of any use is a knife she left on the counter, so she grabs that and walks toward the sound, praying and hoping it was her imagination but knowing it wasn’t.
Then the lights in the hallway flicker on.
“Swan.”
And suddenly Killian is standing in front of her in nothing other than a pair of low-slung gray sweatpants, his hipbones showing and the little trail of hair she knows so well disappearing beneath the material. He blinks, and so does she. This can’t be real. It can’t. He should be in his shitty apartment in Queens with his obnoxious roommate, and he should be fast asleep so he can be up early for his first day in his new rotation for his residency.
He shouldn’t be here.
He can’t be here.
But he is.
After placing the knife down, Emma practically catapults herself forward until she’s running into him and slamming her lips into his. Her hands quickly move from his shoulders up into his hair, and while Killian still seems to still be in shock from her jumping on him.
He’s in her apartment when he’s not supposed to be. What did he expect?
But then his mouth is warmly moving over hers, minty toothpaste she was going to avoid invading her senses, and his arm is wrapping over her entire back until his hand is in her hair, tugging her closer and pulling her body flush against his. Everything about him is warm, from his hips to his chest to his lips, and she doesn’t want to leave him. She can’t. It’s been five weeks since she last saw him, five weeks since she last got to feel the softness of his lips and the scratchy roughness of his beard, and she’s consumed by him.
All she wants is him, always.
(And he’s a damn good kisser, so that’s a definite plus.)
“How are you here?” she giggles out, pressing her lips into his cheek.
“I traded shifts around, worked a million graveyards and doubles and worked my ass off until I could get a few days off.”
“I mean,” she laughs, brushing her lips against his left cheek now while her hands trail down over his back, scratching into his skin. He smells so much like him and the body wash that he left a bottle of in her apartment. “What?”
“I lied about my schedule to surprise you. I – ”
She kisses him again. Her entire body is alight with happiness, all of the tiredness fading away and being replaced by the energy of a two-year-old on a sugar high, and she absolutely cannot believe this.
“I don’t care how. Just that you are.”
Killian chuckles and pulls back from the kiss to press his forehead against hers, his nose squishing into her cheek while his prosthetic rubs over her back. “I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a kiss at midnight. My plan couldn’t quite figure that out.”
“Please, they’re overrated. Five in the morning is much better.”
“Yeah?”
“Absolutely. I love you, you know?”
“I do know, Swan. I’m absolutely in love with you too.” His lips move over hers, slow and thorough until a heat is curling deep in her belly and until her skin is covered in goosebumps. “Hey, how many calls did you get about illegal fireworks tonight?”
“Thirty-seven.” “Ah, so we were both wrong.” “Yeah, but I was a hell of a lot closer.”
Killian leans his head back with laughter, and Emma moves to nuzzle herself there, running her lips across his skin in hot, open-mouthed kisses. She might not feel tired, but she probably needs to go to sleep. Killian likely does too, but right now, she can’t think of anything other than stripping him out of his clothes and straddling his lap.
It’s exactly what she does, what they both do. Neither of them can stop laughing, joy and excitement still overflowing, but they do manage to strip each other out of their clothes until there’s a pile at her bedroom down. Killian’s lips leave warm marks against her jaw, her collarbone, her breasts, and her nails scratch down his back until they’re stumbling onto the bed and Emma is crawling over Killian.
He stretches her when he enters hers, and she sighs at the fullness of having him inside of her again. This isn’t a feeling that can be replicated, and seeing the look on Killian’s face – a mixture of pure bliss and desire for more – is priceless. Absolutely priceless.
She cannot believe he’s here.
That he did this to see her.
Stupid, wonderful man.
Emma controls the strokes at first, keeping the slow and deep so that Killian’s nails are digging into the her hip and his brows are pinched together in pleasure, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. It’s too slow, and as slow and careful as some of their reunions can be, what she needs now is fast and desperate, a quick coming together so that her heartbeat is elevated and her body is humming in pleasure.
Killian gives all of that to her more.
Afterwards, when the sweat is cooling on their skin and the night sky is fading away into the barest hints of sunlight outside, Emma kisses Killian’s chest over the small smattering of bird tattoos that reside there. He had them before they met, and Killian jokes about it being some kind of sign that he either had to fall in love with a woman with the last name of a bird or give up being a doctor to go off and study ornithology.
(The tattoos are for his mother, but he rarely likes to talk about that.)
“I’m sorry I didn’t come up with a grand romantic gesture for you,” Emma whispers while running her hands through the thick tufts of hair in his chest.
“Yeah, well,” Killian whispers, pulling her closer in his arms before he tucks her hair behind her ear, “you’re all I need anyways.”
-/-
His placement for his fellowship the next year is in Boston, and both of them have off for New Year’s. It’s practically a miracle.
They’re both asleep before midnight.
It’s okay. Kisses at five in the morning are better.
They’re also far more frequent since they now live together.
(Finally.)

Title: Sea shells and all the things he left behind
Summary: Dick Grayson didn’t go to the beach. He didn’t watch any ocean documentaries, he didn’t talk about his childhood and he most certainly did not work with the mers at Blüdhaven’s Ocean Life Rehabilitation center. And then they brought in a kid clinging to an injured mer and Dick was 9 years old again and drowning.
AN: @thursday-batfam-prompts Prompt 7: Mermaid/Siren. Inspired by Gifts From the Sea.” Please go read that story!!
Dick already knew it was going to be a bad day when he got up. His back hurt and his throat itched and he had the taste of seawater on his tongue, though maybe that was just residue from his tears. Dick couldn’t recall what he had dreamed, but when he closed his eyes, orange flashed in front of his vision.
It was better if he didn’t remember.
Dick contemplated staying home sick, playing catch up with another happy kids’ show he had missed out on when he noticed his phone vibrating. It was nothing new for Dick to wake up to a hundred messages or more - the benefits of being friends with a lot of people who kept odd hours.
To his surprise though, it wasn’t the Titanic Idiots group chat blowing up his phone, just Wally. He was getting a new message every second - either Wally was taking his break way too early or they had an emergency at work.
Dick’s shift didn’t even start until twelve and it was what - nine in the morning?
Instead of bothering with reading through all of the messages, he just called Wally. The phone rang only once and his friend already answered.
“Dick! Holy fuck, you need to get your ass here like immediately we’re way too understaffed and nobody knows what we’re supposed to be doing Roy already called up OLRC main office this is why you don’t let a bunch of volunteers and marine life bachelors work on their own without any superior supervision of you know the people who have actually been trained to deal with-”
“Wally. Breathe. Calm down. What’s going on?”
Dick could hear Wally take a few deep breaths before he continued speaking, only a bit slower than before. At least Dick could make out where a sentence started and where it ended.
“We’ve got an emergency. A kid showed up with an unidentified and severely injured mer today. We think it’s a mermaid, but it doesn’t have a tag from what we can tell, and it’s super hostile, well as hostile as mermaids get given they’re the shiest mers, so we can’t get near it. The kid won’t speak either and separating the two already probably broke Donna’s arm. We need some more manpower here.”
Dick couldn’t wait to eat breakfast. Nutella, marmalade, honey - whatever would get rid off the salty taste on his tongue.
“Wally, I don’t work with the mers, you know that.”
“Yes, Dick, and I’m sorry, but you’re the only guy we’ve got.”
Somehow Wally managed to ooze his frustration and worry over the phone. “Please, Dick. You can look after the kid in the meanwhile and I can help check on the mer, but we need someone here.”
Dick’s premonition proved to be true. He should have just stayed in bed. He marched into the direction of his wardrobe, checking if he still had any clean clothes left.
“Give me thirty minutes to get dressed and grab breakfast and I’ll be there.”
“Thank you so, so much. I owe you.”
Wally’s evident relief made Dick smile. The redhead was Dick’s oldest friend. He had helped Dick find his place in a world he hardly understood, willingly shared a dorm with the resident weird kid and had managed to get Dick this summer job in-between college classes, if anything, Dick owed him.
“No prob, Wally,” Dick replied and ended the call.
He quickly grabbed an old pair of jeans and a shirt he was pretty sure was one of Roy’s hand-me-downs. Their small kitchen was always stuffed full due to Wally’s metabolic disorder, so it didn’t take much time to find something sugary and eatable that would still fill him up and prepare him for the stress that was to come.
Twenty minutes later, he was standing in front of Blüdhaven’s Ocean Life Rehabilitation Center. Dick didn’t even study marine biology. He was taking theatre classes, set on his goal to be as far away from the ocean as he could possibly be.
Yeah, that had turned out exactly like planned.
Not trusting himself to not stall any longer, Dick stepped into the strangely deserted building and headed straight to the part where they kept the mers. Before he could even reach the actual aquarium though, Wally already caught him.
His friend looked way too tired for someone who started his shift two hours ago. He stood right next to a couple boxes, his right hand holding an energy drink while his left was occupied with a donut.
“Dick!” Wally exclaimed and quickly swallowed the food in his mouth. “You’re here!”
Dick just rolled his eyes and focused on everything but his stomachs doing flips. “You did ask me to come. So where’s the kid?”
“In the office right here,” Wally said and pointed at the closed door behind him. “The kid’s not speaking at all. We’ve tried every language we’ve got between all of us, even some clumsy ASL, but the kid won’t react. Wouldn’t even look us in the eyes. And since he still has a knife, we don’t want to surprise him. CPS has already been notified, but they’re overrun as always and won’t come until the afternoon, but maybe you can get him to talk? You’re great with kids.”
That was an exaggeration. Dick was good with kids because he could keep them entertained and tell them the stories that captivated them. Generally speaking, that included kids up to age twelve. Everyone above that? Nope, not Dick’s age group.
Dick sighed. “I mean, I can try. Just don’t expect much, alright?”
Wally smiled, exhausted, but as bright as always. “I’m not expecting a miracle, Boy Wonder. Let me just finish and I’ll introduce you. If he doesn’t start screaming on sight seeing the terrible bags under your eyes-”
“And whose fault are they?”
“- then I’ll leave you two and look after the mer.”
Wally inhaled the remains of his snack and wiped his mouth clean on his jacket. Then he slowly opened the door.
The office had been pretty much emptied. Dick recalled that this was Dinah’s office/private break room, but she was on vacation until the end of the month. All of her belongings must be in the boxes.
When Dick and Wally entered the room and the kid looked up, measuring him. The boy had dark hair and his skin was quite pale by comparison. His blue eyes were sharp, evaluating. He definitely wasn’t keeping silent because of shock then.
The boy was dressed almost normally, aside from the old blood sticking to his hoodie. He wore jeans that had obviously been wet in the past hours. No wonder if he had shown up with a mer - Dick should have asked Wally how that had gone down.
“Hey, kiddo,” Wally said. “This is my friend Dick. He’ll stay here with you now if that’s alright?”
The kid didn’t react. He kept staring at Dick and playing around with his knife and the cord of his necklace. Dick studied it and almost took a step back when he realized what he was looking at.
Shark teeth, dark black scales, corals, fish bones, and two shells.
The necklace was identical to the one Dick had stuffed in the darkest corner of his dresser, except Dick’s had seven shells more, one for each year he had survived. Dick had almost thrown it out in anger multiple times, but in the end, he’d always kept it and felt guilty for even thinking of destroying it.
Suddenly, the puzzle pieces slotted together smoothly.
Dick had grown up multilingual until his parents had died. And then, after, he’d spoken only some English. His primary language had been his adopted father’s language made up of clicks and snarls.
“Who are you?” Dick asked, his throat almost hurting from the sounds, and finally, the boy paid attention.
His expression was a stunned one, like Dick’s question had torn down a wall so high you couldn’t even imagine anything lingering behind it.
While Wally looked at Dick like he was crazy, the kid already had tears forming in his eyes.
“You speak!” The kid still had a strong English accent, he couldn’t have been learning to speak for long.
“I was taught, like you,” Dick replied. “What are you doing here.”
“You speak,” the kid only repeated, hope almost choking him. “You’re human and you speak! You’re eldest-who-can-fly-on-land.”
Now it was Dick’s turn to be stunned while the kid started crying for real.
“You’ve got to help us. He’d got hurt badly after missed-love-bright-as-the-sun died and then venom-in-his-blood came and he said not to come but I didn’t know who else to turn to-”
“He-” Dick’s eyes went wide and he jumped up. “Come with me, now.”
“Dick, what the hell is going on?” Wally shouted as Dick turned into the other direction and leaped into a sprint.
He and the kid quickly followed him, but all Dick could think of that they were going to be too late, that he wasn’t going to make it-
“Dick, what are you doing!?”
“Siren!” Dick shouted back. “The mer is a siren, not a mermaid!”
Behind him, Dick could hear Wally starting to curse. None of the people on shift were actually experienced in handling anything above a selkie. And if the kid was as close to Bruce at the necklace suggested, then he wouldn’t just stop at a broken arm, no matter how injured he was.
Dick pretty much kicked the door to the aquarium open, and not a minute too late. Roy had just fallen into the water and a massive dark body was pulling at his clothes while the others desperately tried to reach for him.
Why had nobody broken the cabinet with the tranquilizers?
Dick didn’t hesitate, he didn’t even bother to kick off his shoes or get rid off his jacket, he just jumped right into the water, followed by the hysteric sounds of his friends.
“Where is my son!?”
The water engulfed him and Dick is seventeen and leaving the next, fifteen and on the surface for the first time in years, thirteen and complaining he’s slower than Kori and Babs, eleven and falling asleep on scales, nine years old and drowning alongside his parents, except he got saved by-
“Bruce!”
The siren suddenly let go of Roy, who struggled to get back to the surface and just stared at Dick like he couldn’t quite believe he was there.
“Dick,” Bruce said. “My eldest-who-can-fly.”
The name Bruce had given him when he’d taken Dick into his family had changed. Somehow that was still what caught him off-guard the most.
Dick had left screaming, spitting poison, but he was the-eldest now, not the-reject-who-left though that opened a whole other can of worms.
Bruce looked less like the predator he had just moments before. His eyes were still dark and cat-like, and his massive black tail with razor-sharp fins lingered in the deep of the pool. He had more scars than years ago, never mind the many festering lacerations they needed to take care off as soon as possible.
But Bruce’s expression was made up of terrified hopefulness. Dick was glad he didn’t have a mirror. He didn’t want to know what face he was making, but going by the sound of roaring waves in his ears, he was close to heartbreak as well.
“Hi, Dad.”
The words were much too weak for what he wanted to say but-
They’d have to be enough for now.

Vacation w/ The Avengers!
Hi, internet!
Since this is my *first post* to this blog, thought I'd introduce myself! I'm midwesterwebslinger, but you can call me anytime 😉☎️ Just kidding, just call me May. It's just easier that way. I'm a dancer, up-and-coming actress, and of course, a lover of all things marvel. I probably sound like an idiot right now. Since I've never written anything before, I decided to start off with a simple headcanon. If you like it, hate it, love it, or even don't care, please give me some feedback! I'd love to actually know what I'm doing on tumblr lols :') Without further ado, here's this adorable fanfic filled with avengers goodness!! PS- this is kinda long and I didn't edit it AT ALL😬
avengers x reader
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You had been a member of the avengers for what, 11 months now?
Even though it hadn't even been a year yet, the team was family to you
And what do families do?
GO ON VACATION
Steve and Tony decided that, after a very long and hard mission, you guys deserved a little break.
You and Peter almost flipped the table over at dinner when Tony said that the lot of you would be going Florida for a month
[fast forward to after the entire packing and traveling process had ended]
Steve would wake up first every day around 6:30 am to eat some cereal on the porch and listen to the waves
Nat would get up second and make an omlet for herself
You would get up third, joining Steve on the porch in your PJs and glasses with a glass of milk and peanut butter toast
You and Steve would have the best conversations on the porch every morning
It was great bonding time
You guys would talk about lots of random stuff like America, the dinosaurs, music, freedom, school, science, and life in general
After you guys finished up talking, both of you would go get in your swimsuits, put on a cover up, and walk up and down the beach
Sometimes Nat would join and it was great
You noticed how peaceful the beach was when the hoards of hotel guests weren't around
Your usual morning activities with Steve would end around 9:30, when you went to go see who else was awake
You knew Wanda was awake, because you would see her doing yoga every morning when you walked back into the house
That witch it surprisingly flexible
The only other avenger awake at 9:30 would usually be Bucky, sadly not your partner in crime Mr. Parker
So, you and Steve and Bucky headed down to the pool
Steve and Bucky would sit on some pool chairs with their hats and sunglasses while you switched between sitting between the two grandpas and floating around in the pool
Around 10:30, you would hear the screams of Clint at Peter to wake up and get off of the couch
Classic Peter
About 5 minutes after you hear Clint scream, Peter comes stumbling out of the house with a cup of yogurt in his swim trunks
"Look who's awake!" Says Steve, glancing up from the newspaper
"What a shame" replies Bucky
"You guys are funny! Hey Y/N, wanna jump in with me?"
*cue the two of you cannon balling into the pool, getting Steve's newspaper wet*
Steve gives you crazy teens an over exaggerated look of shock
"I wish I didn't have to do this, but I'm going to have to eliminate the other of you"
You saw your life flash before your eyes as Steve ran at full Cap speed towards the pool and launched himself into the artificial paradise that was the pool
Waves. Huge waves. It was a tsunami of Captain America sized proportions.
Bucky would join in the fight on Steve's side, and obviously team super solider best team teenager
The four of you would have some intense chicken fights
You on Bucky's shoulders, Peter on Steve's
A true battle of the teens
"Come on, Y/N! You can beat Parker!"
"Come on Peter! You can win! But don't be too rough on her! She's smaller than you!"
:') Steve looking out for the little guy makes me want to cry
You surprisingly beat "Team Super New Yorkers"
Bucky was just as surprised as you were
"Give it here, Y/N! Ya sure deserve it, doll!"
The three of you would be in the middle of yet another splash war when a window opens and Tony yells,
"Can you be quiet? I'm on a conference call!"
Peter immediately feels guilty and apologizes as fast as he can
"I'm sorry Mr. Stark we'll try to play softer next time"
Steve could care less about Tony's call. For Pete's sake he hadn't had this much fun since 1943!
"Lighten up a little Stark, it is vacation after all!"
Around noon, Clint would emerge from the house to join Nat on a bike ride to a fish place down the beach
"I'll be back whenever. Never, preferably."
Steve would make sandwiches for you, Peter, Wanda, and ocassionaly Bucky
Possibly the best sandwiches you ever had
You guys always spent the second half of the day on the beach with the rest of the avengers
Tony would be sitting in an overly-priced beach hut, Clint sitting next to the hut in a tiny plastic chair, Natasha sitting next to Clint on a beach towel, Wanda floating around in one of those donut floaties, Steve and Bucky standing in the water, and you and Peter causing chaos
If you can't tell, you and Peter are super close
After you, you guys are the youngest by far AND the same age
On the first day at the house, you and Peter did a little investigating and found 2 PADDLE BOARDS
You and Peter claimed one of them for yourselves, and let the rest of the team share the other one
Peter would usually paddle while you sat up front, on with your toes in the water
Pretty relaxing if I do say so myself
TBH if Peter didn't have super strength he probably wouldn't be able to paddle lols
Sometimes you would paddle and Peter would rock the board back and forth so you would lose your balance and fall into the ocean
The little DORK wouldn't fall off bc of his stuPID SPIDEY SENSES
On one particular afternoon, you and Peter had gone farther out than ever before
Not too far cause you guys are lowkey scared of the ocean
Peter turned the boat towards the shore and you guys waved to Steve and Bucky, and they waved back
Bucky was a jokester
"Don't come back, Parker!"
Silly Bucky
The first time you saw Sam all day was dinner, apparently he had been out running the entire time
Speaking of dinner, Clint is surprisingly good at barbecue food
You guys had ribs, pulled pork, Wanda's legendary brownies, Nat's lemonade, Tony's classic summer salad, and a fruit salad Steve picked out from the store
Lots of stories and laughing really tired you out
Tony, being the dad he is, sent you and Peter to bed before the rest of the group
"Alright minors, I think it's time for you guys to go to bed. Let the adults talk."
Peter went to his couch and you went to your room, saying goodnight to Peter as you shut the door
Another day, another breakfast with Steve, another walk on the beach, another yell from Clint, until Tony called all of you in for lunch
Tony announced that there was a situation in Cuba and the team needed to go in and eliminate Hydra immediately
Of course, the team minus you and Peter
These Hydra agents were different from the rest.. way more hardcore
Of course, Tony couldn't just leave you guys all alone at the house! The two of you would definitely blow it up
So, he kindly offered to stay home and babysit
The next morning, around 4 am, the team left and the three of you gave hugs and waved them goodbye
You all went to bed again, and were woken up by the sound of Tony's music
Since Tony hadn't had a lot of time with just you youngins this trip, he called today, "Super Fun Tony Bonding Day"
Apparently, he had planned a surprise for you guys today and told you two to hurry to your rooms (or couch) and get your swimsuits and coverups on and meet back in the kitchen in 10 minutes
10 minutes later you were in the kitchen with Peter when Tony came walking in with a giant bag filled with who knows what
"Part of the surprise", as he called it
After a two hour ride in Tony's car, you sitting in the passenger seat, the three of you arrived to the inner coastal marina
APPARENTLY Tony had a boat here and decided to take you guys on some light boating in the inner coastal
It was great. The stuff in the bag was a picnic.
You did generally the same activities for the rest of the month: breakfast with Steve, walk, pool, relaxing w/ the soldiers, playing with Peter, eating Steve's sandwiches, paddling with Peter, floating with Wanda, ocassionaly running with Sam, relaxing with Clint, working on tech with Tony when you were too burnt to go outside, and always ending the day by gathering the team together for a dinner under the stars and waves in the background
You loved dinner the best. Having everybody together was the best. Whether it was Steve ranting about America, You and Peter ranting about school, Sam telling the same stories, Nat trying to hook up Steve, Clint bragging about his farm, and even Tony and Steve arguing; you always went to bed with a full heart.
You learned more than how to properly chicken fight a super soldier at this house; you learned that vacations aren't made by the destination. Vacations are made by the people you travel with, and the memories you make with them.
A dreamy winter holiday in Whistler
Sometimes even when you’re a travel blogger, you need a holiday. A holiday from endless holidays. Yes, yes I know, and the award for most self-indulgent whiny intro to a blog goes to…yours truly.
Moving on.
This year I went home for the holidays, which was really nice. I was mostly offline (except for my absurd Instagram Stories – seriously, follow me on there. I have no filter at all), and spending time with old friends and family back on the East Coast of the US. It was mellow and wonderful, and just what I needed to reset the old internal clock, and also weirdly make me appreciative of my life in New Zealand.
But come January after a few weeks at home, I was getting itchy feet and needed to get out of small town Virginia again. And ever since I got hooked on snowboarding at my home mountain of Treble Cone in New Zealand, I knew I had to squeeze in a cheeky trip at some point while at home.
Also, sidenote, I brought my snowboarding gear home with me because I got sent a ski bag, wait for it, called the Douchebag. Yes, it exists. Finally a bag for me!
Ok, I just have to gush about flying for a second; if you are not a travel nerd, skip this section.
Living in New Zealand, when I fly home to the US, I always try and fly Air New Zealand. Apart from being pretty much the dopest airline out there (so trendy, so funny, so quirky), two years ago I finally started collecting my miles with them to get status. Yes, I did in fact travel for almost a decade and never collected miles with any airline. CRINGE.
But, now that I have tasted the beautiful glorious benefits that come with airline loyalty, in addition to no longer being completely broke, I book pretty much with only airlines I have loyalty on. Last year I hit Silver status with Air New Zealand Airpoints, which means that I get one recognition upgrade per year. I managed to nab a great deal on a Premium Economy (the middle class) flight to San Francisco and then put in a free upgrade request to Business. And boom, got it the night before. Yay.
Once you’ve flown business class on long-haul international flights, your world will be rocked. Disclosure, I did this all on my own, nothing sponsored.
The Air New Zelaand Economy Skycouch
Air New Zealand’s main North American hubs are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Vancouver. Knowing that I wanted to squeeze in a ski holiday, I booked my flights back to New Zealand via Vancouver, BC in Canada. And by happy chance I also managed to get upgraded to the secret Skycouch from Vancouver to Auckland. On Air New Zealand, you can get a whole row to yourself in Economy where the bottom of the seat pops up and converts the row into a flat bed with special bedding and everything. Holy crap.
And as luck would have it, North America was having the winter of a lifetime. And as a novice snowboarder passing through BC in January, there is one place you go – Whistler.
Whistler is pretty much the Mecca of winter destinations, and I had been hearing about it for years from all my friends in New Zealand who have done winter seasons there. It’s big. It’s epic. It’s famous. I had to see what all the fuss was about.
I wanted a solid week somewhere with great snow, easily accessible lifts and long, varied runs of all levels, where I could really focus on improving AND feel comfortable. Whistler ticks all of that. Also there is an entire cafe/shack on the mountain that sells different grilled cheeses called Ollies. SOLD.
As a general rule, I don’t like hyped-up destinations. Setting the bar impossibly high will often leave you disappointed. Maybe that’s the pessimist in me speaking, but it’s true. Aim low and you’ll always be happy, I say!
Let’s not delve into my attitude around that any further though, shivers.
Anywho, I was nervous Whistler would be too commercial or too touristy, but holy crap I loved it. Like, I-looked-into-changing-my-flights-to-stay-longer loved it. It was just what I needed at just the right time. Yes, yes there is a reason it’s consistently ranked North America’s #1 resort.
So without further ado, here is the vaguely chronological journey of my week vacation in Whistler. Tag along. Pull up a chair and a cup of tea, get cozy and stay for a while.
It’s no secret; most of the trips I do nowadays are for work. They are amazing and I love them, but they aren’t exactly a holiday. My trip to Whistler was a much-needed holiday, where I didn’t need to work 20 hour days and fry my brain.
I had only three things on my mind in Canada that week: snowboard, sleep a lot, and eat poutine. Repeat.
I also booked my whole trip the week before I left around Christmas for the beginning of January, which I advise you NOT to do as it is busy and peak season. All the good pickings for condos and apartment rentals were snatched up and I spent a small fortune on accommodation. However, I could literally ski to my door at Blackcomb which made it worth it. And there was nowhere else civilized and reasonable, also making it worth it.
Which also leads me to my second point, for those (like me) who are unaware, the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is actually two mountains – Whistler and Blackcomb, makes sense right? There are dozens of chairlifts and gondolas that go up both, and there is an incredible freestanding gondola linking the two mountains with the village sprawling below along both mountains.
Breakfast poutine in town at Stonesedge is a must, the coziest spot ever
Maple bacon donuts are a MUST – The Portobello Bakery in the Fairmont
When I arrived in Vancouver, everyone was freaking out because it was snowy and icy. Um, hello Canada, that’s kind of your thing. But the locals ended up telling me that it actually doesn’t often do that in Vancouver. Sure.
Whistler is less than a two hour drive from the Vancouver Airport, so it’s easy to get there, though it was dumping snow the day I arrived, and yours truly was too cheap to rent a 4WD car. Luckily, most of the rentals have snow tires on them, which ended up being obligatory, and I did a slow cruise down to Whistler behind the snow plows on the scenic Sea to Sky Highway. No rush, I was on holiday.
With so much snow, I was fizzing. I knew the riding was going to be great, and oh my was the village of Whistler so cute. It was a real-life winter wonderland.
So. Much. Snow. Yes, yes YES!!
My first day back I was rusty. I am such a cautious snowboarder, but I am determined to get better, which is why I book so many snowboarding trips.
If you want to work on improving in a comfortable resort, Whistler is the place to be. The runs are long are there are so many different ones of all levels, I didn’t really have to repeat any of them. I mean hell, they have a run that’s 11 kilometers long. They had runs that progressed exactly with my ability which was perfect for me.
My days were pretty similar. I would wake up, go get coffee and walk over to Whistler mountain, catch the gondola up and spend most of the day riding on the mountain before catching the Peak 2 Peak Gondola and crossing over to Blackcomb and riding down. I ate a lot, I spent a lot of time in my onesie, and I read. It was so chill and great. Each day I felt like I was riding better and better.
I was also lucky enough to be there for the Deep Winter Photo Challenge, and managed to nab an invite. Six professional photographers are invited to Whistler to come and shoot for 72 hours in bounds at the resort and put together a slideshow with music of their story and shots and share them with a live audience on the Saturday.
Honestly, it sounds like one hell of a challenge, but amazing to watch. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was sure surprised when I showed up and pretty much all of Whistler turned out for it! It’s a huge event, and one of the biggest and most respected winter photography competitions in the world. Pay attention Liz.
It was such a fun night, meeting everyone at the event, watching the different shows and hearing their stories. For me, this whole ski/snow world is new, and I love getting these tastes for it with bright eyes.
The vibe was so amazing, and it reminded me so much of Wanaka. In fact, I kept feeling like I knew everyone, when in reality I didn’t know anyone. But they all could have blended right in in Wanaka! I got lots of feels and felt super inspired, and had a great time afterwards too and getting my first real taste of the Whistler nightlife. Oh my.
You can watch the winner’s show here, and follow him, Guy Fattal on Instagram. His shots are so inspiring and make me miss Whistler everyday.
Finally I had my absolute best day ever snowboarding while I was in Whistler. I am not exaggerating. Every time I remember it I get the biggest, dumbest grin on my face. It was the best.
Halfway through my trip we had an epic powder day, around 30 centimeters, so epic for me. One of the amazing Whistler girls invited me along to try out Fresh Tracks, where you head up the Whistler Gondola at 7:15am, have breakfast at the the Roundhouse Lodge, and then you get to ride the mountain before it opens to the public. Oh, and it’s only $21.
We had planned to go and it happened to be a powder day, so we got there early to queue up – only the first 650 are allowed up – the tickets are not day specific.
Sidenote – it’s not usually -17 degrees, that was just a major cold snap
So after that morning, I truly understand what all the fuss is all about on powder days. I’ve had powder days before here and there, but nothing like this, and not where I was first on the mountain.
We basically had whole runs to ourselves, I was the first to make the tracks on them. It’s basically flying, guys.
Looking down my board was covered in snow and powder was flying all over me and in my face. I became fearless, falling couldn’t hurt me; it was like landing on a cloud. It was a huge step forward for me with my riding, and a day I’ll never forget.
If you were in Whistler on that day, I was the crazy loon in a yellow jacket screaming and hollering all morning as I carved out tracks. What a memory! Pure euphoria and joy.
Guys, I really get it now.
I rode until I couldn’t ride no more.
Unsurprisingly, the next day I couldn’t get out of bed. My body was so sore and it felt like I had been hit by a bus, so I did the only sensible thing you can do when faced with that situation; I went straight to the spa. This was my holiday!
After an amazing massage and a few hours spent soaking in the hot pools at the iconic Scandinave Spa, I felt like a new me, and was ready for the next round.
I went snowboarding until the day I left Whistler, and each day I felt better and more confident, and I was gutted when it was time to head home. But be warned. A week isn’t enough, and Whistler is one of those places that gets under your skin. I know I’ll be back.
Have you been to Whistler? Do you ski or snowboard? Are you a fan of winter wonderlands? What’s your dream holiday?
