#i'll be honest being able to do pointless bullshit like this is a good chunk of why i use linux#like when i have to use windows for something besides the practical annoyances the first thing that makes me mad is like#''why don't my fucking windows jiggle when i move them. completely unusable OS''

some newbie questions I'm thinking about and trying to figure out~~ cause even though I've been a linux user off and on for a bit I still consider myself a newbie.
what is systemd? should I avoid it? why all the hate?
cause "it doesn't follow the unix philosophy/is bloated/etc"
should I find a distribution that doesn't use it and install it and give it a whirl?
or should I try to install freebsd and give that a shot? I've thought about that for a while too but worry I'm not smart enough to get it to work....
and scared I'll break something and not be able to fix it~~ :(
anxiety go brrr
surely there are linux distributions that don't use systemd~~ and hopefully they're just as easy to use as linux mint~~ but I've also tangled w fedora way back when..... so hopefully I'll get a handle on stuff and normalize it fast~~~
down the unix/linux/bsd rabbit hole~~~ lol
a very sleepy post

heres your random frustrating fact of the day
#explanation: metric usually uses powers of 10 but data is naturally binary. so theres disagreement over whether to measure data in powers of#1000 (like every other SI standardized unit) or 1024 (very close to 1000 for convenience; however naturally exactly accurate to data units)#usually powers of 1000 are measured with SI prefixes like kilobyte (kB) megabyte (MB) etc#while powers of 1024 are measured in kibibytes (kiB) mebibytes (MiB) etc#apple and some distros of linux like ubuntu choose to standardize on the si style. most other unixlike standardizes on binary style#as this excerpt says WINDOWS SPECIFICALLY AND EXCLUSIVELY chooses to standardize on binary style but displays in si units... which is why#disks that are exactly 1 terabyte will display as mysteriously missing a lot of storage space. because theyre literally using it wrong#(not exactly exclusively because RAM is also counted in binary units but referred to in decade units)#(matters less though because the differential is literally exponentially less)

if a linux distro is "looking at adding AI" to it I am simply switching to another one
#fortunately not my problem because I use arch#but why are so many tech bros so bent on being don't you wish your linux was also clogged with a bunch of useless shit like windows?

being real one of the things that make me so Afraid of a bachelor route drop that's getting closer with every day is that the laptop i played patho on [the only beast i have that's running windows, and as such can run steam + download games without much hassle] has been sick for a while, i don't think she can handle running P2 anymore (she struggled with it already before. but now i think she would just quit on me) + not sure what repairs would cost. fear and shivers...
#you *can* get Steam for Linux [which is what all of the other beasts run on] but it is a hassle esp. with the configuration i have#we've tried installing it twice and twice failed#i *could* try to make the present desktop i'm typing from a dualboot but i also am unsure how it would fare with it#i'm very used to watching playthroughs so i'm not like Against returning to that but#Patho is The Game(s) that i truly felt like i hashtag Needed to play and as such did#and also relying on playthroughs means you go with the uploader's time and not yours... running behind... FEAR!!!!#this is why i prefer obsessing over games who haven't had a sequel in 10 years and movies from decades ago.... FEAR!!!!#neigh (blabbers)

Advice for making stuff work well in Debian?
Hmm, most of the troubleshooting I do is weird architecture issues that won't impact anyone running Debian for x64 but off the top of my head
If you know exactly what package you want, command line package manager use is just fine, but GUI frontends are pretty nice for searching through things if you want to actually read some details on what you're installing. Yeah you can just use debian's web-based apt stuff but it's not convenient to do that. Using a frontend is convenient.
This is non-debian-specific advice but most of the time if I need to do something more complex than like, crop an image or maybe put a color filter on it, I just use photopea because it being online means it works on just about anything. It's not quite as advanced as Photoshop but most of the capabilities it lacks are rather small and niche, as opposed to like "You can't do outlined text" (thanks GIMP) (Also you can run whatever image editor in wine if you want and if you have a better computer than I currently do (rip to my good one) it's worth giving a go. Sometimes you need to do some config but lovely linux users on the internet will often give you the exact settings you need to get the program working :))
MComix is a good CBZ viewer
If you install imagemagick, it may change or mess up your settings for default image viewer. imagemagick is a divine and beautiful program but its image viewer totally sucks so change it back if it does this.
This is mostly fairly specific huh.... Most of the time my computer Just Works for me. I can do troubleshooting for a great many issues but generalized advice is a little harder X'D
#sometimes java devs cause me problems though#i thought python devs were bad but at least they have compatibility ironed out they just suck at writing readmes#java devs are like 'please sequester my .jar that requires antiquated dependencies from anything new or it will break' okay why though#why is java dev like that#um but that's not exactly a linux problem and i don't know how to fix java development i only use like c family and asm

Linix-Unix-BSD Laptop Journey~~ (and some questions again)
yet another question~~ tho up to my own musings and uncertainty at this point~~
I'm too afraid to try to install FreeBSD cause I'm worried I won't be able to dig up some needed internet info and that makes me feel dumb~~ is the Domain Name not the Hostname or name of the wifi? or would it be my ISP's website or something?
I like tech but not knowing this makes me feel stupid lol even though I'm probably not~~~ and that's just anxiety lying to me~~~
also is there any point in moving from Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 to Debian 11 disks that I have burned?
the only one with the zoom feature (unless I install something if I can find it) is the Cinnamon Desktop, and at that point I see no point on dropping Mint for pure Debian in that case....
need accessibility for my blind butt (despite also being stubborn and not using it half the time anyway lol)
ALSO none of the debian live CDs that I tried saw my WIFI and idk why~~ and they're all debian 11...
might need to download newer versions and burn them to disk I guess~~
or maybe if I installed one of them anyway, and actually hooked it to ethernet, then installed updates whether it would see my wifi then? idk
found a distro that doesn't use SystemD called PCLinuxOS and thought about giving that a try, but idk if it's good for someone like me, but I got a handle sort of on fedora back in the day.
So currently stuck on linux mint debian edition cause I'm afraid to give freebsd a try due to maybe not having the network information requited and idk where to find it~~ and cause debian just straight up wouldn't see my wifi~~ tho I've also said before in this post that idk if it's a good idea or not to go from linux mint debian, to straight debian.... cause I'm going to be stuck with the Cinnamon desktop anyway~~
like yesterday I spent all morning booting into all the debian live CDs that I had; except for the standard which I think is GNOME, and none of them could even SEE my wifi or ANY wifi
now I hate that I seem like the person that just wants things to work instead of tinker w stuff to get it to work, cause that's part of the fun and frustration of being on linux I suppose~~~ and I really hope I'm smart enough to figure stuff out~~
would be happy to eventually jump to a more unix like OS cause I believe the backbone of the internet is UNIX anyway~~ :)
I like to think I'm a nerd and a techie but at the same time think I'm stupid and don't know anything~~ if I'm being brutally honest w myself~~ but I guess you got to be feeling stupid to learn huh?
tldr; and making the questions more easily found~~ my journey through linux/bsd computer systems so far, and where I'm at....
Is it worth it to install pure debian if I'm already using linux mint debian (and the wifi actually works), should I get away from SystemD and try to install PCLinuxOS? or FreeBSD? am I smart enough to install FreeBSD? What network information do I need and where can I find it?
and yet another random question at the bottom cause I remembered a linux youtube channel where they talked about a bunch of stuff way back in the 2010s I think called "Jupiter Broadcasting" what happened to them?
wanted to go eventually to FreeBSD cause it's more unix like than linux, and i think more cohesive as a whole as opposed to bits and pieces mossaic'd together in linux.... also if it is more unix based, unix as far as I'm aware is the backbone of the internet if I'm remembering correctly~~ and I'd be happy to use it~~~
so idk what I'm doing~~ lol, stay on linux mint debian cause it works? try to get FreeBSD installed, try to find out how to fix debian not seeing my WIFI (I'd hoped that if I installed it and connected it to ethernet that updates would fix that), or install PCLinuxOS that I found? cause it looks neat~~~
more history about myself~~ as dumb as it sounds, or maybe not, my dad was into tech, he'd built his first computer and if it wasn't for him pirating some version of windows, we never would've had it, lol. but ye he was a techie, and he showed me the 1995 movie "hackers". I watched that on repeat through my teenage years for some reason~~ the music was good, and now I learnt that that's not actually bow hacking works, lol it's a cheesy film.... but that sparked an interest in technology and eventually led me to finding linux to begin with. and Unix~~ cause I thought it was something that my dad and I could do together~~~ but we never did...... but the techie interest stuck~~~~ I need to rewatch that film and find the soundtrack CDs I have~~~ been a while~~~~
second guessing it am I even smart enough to run anything other than linux mint anyway? probably yes but I doubt my own intelligence, lol. especially I think anyone irl I've shown my writing to or talked to say that I'm "smart as a whip" but I don't see it.... :(
#personal#thoughts#thinking#i think too much#yet more questions yay#question#questions#and my linux journey so far#linux#linux mint#linux mint debian#linux mint debian edition#debian#debian linux#pc linux os#pclinuxos#bsd#freebsd#systemd#system d#idk if I should stay away from it or not at this point lol#i feel too stupid to install it cause I don't have all the network information that the manual requests and idk where to find it#got to be stupid to learn I guess huh#or its anxiety telling me to give up idk#debian y u no see my wifi?#also need a distro that has screen zoom cause I'm legally blind#despite being stubborn and not using it anyway#pointless history as to why I like tech the way I do#miss you dad

A noninsignificant portion of my day is now spent fighting for my life in Linux and being fed unhelpful answers by tech support that refuse to give any actual comprehensive training on the cluster. What is it about Linux that makes people lose all empathy I stg.
#like I get the questions are probably annoying but why would you go into a tech support job then#idk like I feel like most other professionals are way more patient and compassionate about their tools?#in regards to ppl trying to use them or showing enthusiasm#the Linux community just feels like a dick measuring contest sometimes

what are ppl talkin abt that its complicated to use? i meaannnnn not really?
#then again take this with a grain of salt since im using mint LMFAO#and i also only got to play with this stuff today only#but tbh? using the terminal and having to find dependencies is like. not really that big of a deal#disclaimer: im not a gamer. i heard linux is awful with gaming. so.... ye#but im not really gonna game much tbh if ever#so. yeah. this aint all bad considering my needs tbh#idk why ppl are moaning and groaning and saying linux is too hard to use.#not in my personal opinion! and i have pretty basic ass understanding of html coding and tech in general#its really not all that bad!#clown horn

Jfc Windows, forced updates are one thing but unannounced forced updates that automatically install and reboot my computer overnight are something else entirely, like actively hostile to the user. I frequently leave calculations running overnight when I leave the office so that they're done when I get back in the morning, but now I can't trust my computer to not shut itself down and kill the calculation. Clown shoes operating system.
#microsoft fuck off dont touch my stuff#i have to use windows for work bc we use some proprietary software thats only distributed for windows#so like theres no solution#i dont know when the updates are coming and i couldnt stop them even if i did#but at least id know not to run a job that particular night instead of coming in the next day to see it made negative progress#fuuuuuuuuuck why cant everything just be linux and easy#windows 11 hatepost#science is fun and rewarding#shapoopy says

linux is great and all but theres a very specific problem if you grow up with it, where people who know stuff about computers now assume that you also know stuff about computers. Sorry, im about to disappoint you so hard
#the funnier version of this is meeting someone who is staunchly anti linux#and is trying to start an indepth fight about it with 'why do you even use linux?'#only to be hit with 'bc of my dad'#using linix for the same reason others use windows: habit#fables rambles
