some newbie questions I'm thinking about and trying to figure out~~ cause even though I've been a linux user off and on for a bit I still consider myself a newbie.
what is systemd? should I avoid it? why all the hate?
cause "it doesn't follow the unix philosophy/is bloated/etc"
should I find a distribution that doesn't use it and install it and give it a whirl?
or should I try to install freebsd and give that a shot? I've thought about that for a while too but worry I'm not smart enough to get it to work....
and scared I'll break something and not be able to fix it~~ :(
anxiety go brrr
surely there are linux distributions that don't use systemd~~ and hopefully they're just as easy to use as linux mint~~ but I've also tangled w fedora way back when..... so hopefully I'll get a handle on stuff and normalize it fast~~~
down the unix/linux/bsd rabbit hole~~~ lol
a very sleepy post

Reviving Old Computers: My Journey with Linux Mint and Other Distros
If you’re like me, you hate the idea of throwing away perfectly good electronics just because they’re a bit outdated. That’s why I’ve been experimenting with various Linux distributions over the years to get the most out of my old machines. I’ve tried everything from Ubuntu to Puppy Linux, but the one that’s stuck with me the longest is Linux Mint. As my daily driver, Linux Mint has proven to be…

I had a dream where I installed Debian (as opposed to Linux Mint, which is the distribution I currently use) and somehow messed up the installation in a really weird way.
Somehow, parts of my computer got desynchronized from each other. There were parts of my PC that were Windows. Other parts were Mint. The latest Terraria update was 1.4.4.0 (as opposed to 1.4.4.9) but my Minecraft installation was in the future, when the "Winter Drop" came out. Firefox was already in December. Google Chrome reinstalled itself, and it was some time in 2020. Whenever I downloaded a file, I would frequently get two files, each from different points in the past and/or future.
Somehow, I became desynchronized too. Parts of my personality separated from each other and became spread out through time. My body desynchronized, too. At the end of my dream, I got into a major car accident. My hands and feet were immediately affected by the impact. Next was my torso. Then, after that, there were my arms, then my legs. Finally, after a whole 24 hours, my head was affected by the crash.
#dreams#Completely unrelated thought that I don't know why I have considering the fact i have never read them and i don't follow the series really:#somehow this feels like one of those weird fnaf scary short story book things. there has to be a novelty fnaf themed linux distribution#pretend I'm in middle school and that i installed that instead of debian and you've got one of those books i think

My job role is changing for the third time in less than a year so I thought I would start looking into learning Linux just to solidify a path of my skills instead of being a blanket "technology support"
Turns out, even just picking a starting point is it's own maze!
#job#market#responsibilities#autistic burnout#tech#it support#linux distros#you try to search a browser and even the articles saying stuff like “best distribution for beginners” List off like 12 without explanation

Jfc Windows, forced updates are one thing but unannounced forced updates that automatically install and reboot my computer overnight are something else entirely, like actively hostile to the user. I frequently leave calculations running overnight when I leave the office so that they're done when I get back in the morning, but now I can't trust my computer to not shut itself down and kill the calculation. Clown shoes operating system.
#microsoft fuck off dont touch my stuff#i have to use windows for work bc we use some proprietary software thats only distributed for windows#so like theres no solution#i dont know when the updates are coming and i couldnt stop them even if i did#but at least id know not to run a job that particular night instead of coming in the next day to see it made negative progress#fuuuuuuuuuck why cant everything just be linux and easy#windows 11 hatepost#science is fun and rewarding#shapoopy says

"windows 11 upgrade ready!" "your computer is eligible for windows 11!" "download windows 11 now!"

#prev you don't even have to these days#even the “hardcore” distributions like arch have subdistros (or “flavors”) that are GUI-focused and user-friendly :)#I use EndeavourOS which is one of these :)#linux has been a back-end tech industry standard for years and since gamers and creators have been turning to it in the last few years#companies have also been making their hardware with linux specifically in mind#so problems like nvidia driver setup and such aren't really an issue anymore#TIP: pick from the 10-15 or so most popular ones and you'll have more beginner-friendly support more quickly

ramble about FreeBSD and Unix~~
how out of my depth would I be trying to install FreeBSD?
would it even boot on my machine?
am I smart enough to go through the install for the system itself as well as get the GUI that I want?
I think you have to go through the command line for quite a bit of time before you get a GUI up and running....
I started off being really interested in BSD/Unix in high school, and tried to fiddle around with a BSD live disc thing in a book (that I don't remember the name of) and then only fiddled around with Linux.
I've been watching videos on youtube of people expressing how stable FreeBSD's modern release is~~
I want to use it on my own hardware; but that's a problem with it I believe, is that it works on sort of limited amount of hardware, as opposed to Linux, that you could even run on a toaster...
Is it really that much harder to deal with than Linux?
Of course I've only dealt with a few distros~~ the rundown of distros I've messed around with are;
Ubuntu (not anymore tho)
Debian (current os being Linux Mint Debian 6)
OpenSUSE briefly (tried to get my sibling to use it on their laptop, with them knowing next to nothing about Linux, sorry...)
Fedora back in high school, I ran it on a laptop for a while. I miss GNOME....
Mageia (I dual booted it on a computer running windows 7, also in or right after high school, so a long time ago)
attempted GhostBSD but it wouldn't boot after install from the live CD (also many years ago at this point)
I like to hop around and (hopefully now I have, yeah right...) I can't make up my mind which I actually want to use permanently.
Linux Mint Debian edition is really good so far tho~~!!
Current PC is an ASUS ROG Stryx (spelling?) that I bought on impulse many years ago~~ Was running windows 10, fixed the issue and now use the OS stated above~~
or maybe I should maybe ditch Mint and run straight Debian... Thought of that too. and it might have an easier time installing and actually booting than FreeBSD on this machine...
but then BSD and by extension unix is meant to be used on older hardware and to be efficient both in execution of things, and space.
"do one thing and do it well" iirc was a bit of the unix philosophy...
yeah, no I HATE technology /heavy sarcasm/

I'm reseaching a new writing software as my switching computer OS soon (and I'm moving away from all Microsoft / Google as much as I can, but that's a story for another day). Anyway I'm reading the documentation, as one do, and almost the first thing I see is "not suitable for technical writing".
Yeah no shit your software looks like a cool markdown thing but I wouldn't use it write documentation.
Anyway it's between NovelWriter or Manuskript, I'm not sure yet.

Installing Linux With The KDE Plasma Desktop Environment | Talking With TDC & KDC & KC
File:KDE Plasma 6 screenshot.png Dream 1 All that I can remember of this dream is that I was with someone helping them install Linux on a computer while we talked about various things. I am not sure which Linux distribution (distro) we were installing, but I know that it used the KDE Plasma desktop environment (DE). A Quick First Look At KDE Plasma 6 The person told me that this computer was…
