Summary: Sweet Pea/Reader- Soulmate AU where you can hear whatever music your soulmate is listening to
You’d grown up hearing your parent’s humming songs in secret. Your mother’s voice streaming upbeat pop music and opera ballads; while your father hissed along with the alt-rock and the country drawl he heard in his head. They didn’t need to tell you they weren’t soulmate’s; the music did that for them. They assured you that while they did love each other, and wanted to meet their soulmate’s, sometimes the world was too big, and the funds to short to get them out of the small town they called home. You worried constantly that Riverdale would trap you the same way it had them; not truly miserable, but never happy enough.
They put you in singing and piano lessons when you’re five, you drop the piano in exchanged for ballet and keep the singing until your parents decided not to drive you to Centerville for lessons; you join the cheerleading squad instead.
You’re not sure what genres your soulmate is into, their changing taste the only constant with the music. You settle into a mixture of Pop and Dance music that only grows as you join the River Vixens in high school. You enjoy singing; although you try your best to limit it to hours you know both you and your soulmate are awake. Usually they start listening to music around the time you start school, you try not to listen before then, although morning practices usually leave you humming whatever song Cheryl decided to have you all dance to. The music your soulmate listens to seems to constantly stream throughout the day, wherever he goes to school either allows music constantly or he’s sneaking it. Cheryl laughs when you hum under your breath whatever song you’re soulmate is listening to. “So your soulmate is into Indie then? How much you wanna bet he’s some pretentious hipster. Isn’t he?” “Well I haven’t met him have I?” ———————————————————————————
“Hey do any of you know the lyrics; ‘We get lost, and we get found; Now we are here, we won’t back down’ my soulmate has been listening to it on repeat for an hour.” Toni huffs and Sweet Pea nods. “They must be hanging out with mine then; my soulmate is listening to the same thing.” “Aww they’re friends like you two are, you can go on double dates.” Fangs laughs, “That’s a Josie and the pussycat’s song by the way. That means they must be here in Riverdale!!” “Hey! Wait for us!” Fangs shouts after Sweet Pea jogging to catch up to where he’s run up to, he’s stopped and turns around to look nervously at Fangs. “If she knows the Pussycat’s she’s probably a Northsider.” His face falls and Fangs rolls his eyes. “I don’t think she’ll care you’re a Southsider, the gang though, that might freak her out.” ——————————————————————————-
Cheryl had been the one to inform you the Southsider’s were coming to Riverdale. You caught your soulmate almost mockingly singing the Riverdale high fight song. You didn’t know what to expect ignoring all the rumors everyone started spreading. You much preferred to judge your soulmate for who he was when you met him, not based on everything everybody was saying. You find yourself spending more time with Kevin, he’d managed to explain his soulmate was a Southsider; you figured if the sheriff’s son was going to be with a Southsider it could be all that bad. ———————————————————————————–
It’s just your luck you managed to catch a weeklong flu when the Southsider’s are set to make their debut to the school. You trudge in still half sick but coherent enough for your parents to deem you fit to return to school. You wonder how pissed your soulmate is, you’d been marathoning every Disney movie and every musical you could find while you coughed your lungs up at home. You’re half humming a song from Heathers when Kevin and Betty pull you into a hug. “Hey no, I’m still kinda sick so I don’t-“ “You really think we care Y/N? You’ve been gone for the most exciting week ever! You have to meet all the serpents!” “I will I just have to check with Cheryl about practice this week.” -You leave after checking with her, bumping into two of the Serpents. “Sorry.” You smile at them.
“I’m Y/N, you are?” “Toni Topaz, and that’s Fangs Fogarty. Nice to meet you, you new too?” You shake your head. “No, I was sick all last week it’s probably why you didn’t.” You pause wrinkling your nose when your soulmate starts blasting some new song. “You okay?” “Yeah my soulmate decided to crank it up to like fifty on the volume apparently. That’s probably what I get considering he had to listen to Disney and half of the Broadway musical roster all last week.” They laugh along with you. “So how’re you guys adjusting? I was told it was kind of tense?” They nod walking with you to lunch.
“It hasn’t been too bad. Sweet Pea’s having a hard time adjusting.” “Our other friend, he’s a Serpent, but his soulmate goes here and has been avoiding him.” Toni clarifies. “Oh god that must be horrible, can you not talk to them about trying to help him adjust?” “Well they haven’t met yet.” “Oh, well if they’re here it shouldn’t be to hard to wrangle them to at least say hi.” “We don’t know who it is.”
“Well pick out a song for him and just have him blast it 24/7, either one of you will pick up on his soulmate singing it, or they’ll find him to complain.” “We can make him play that song she listened to all the time!” Fangs beams slinging an arm around you smiling. “You’re the best Y/N” “You’ve just met me.” “And now you’re our friend, problem solved!” “That’s not a problem.” Toni comments sitting down. “What’s not a problem?” “Y/N just solved your soulmate problem!”
“It’s not a problem, we haven’t met and we can avoid each other until she’s ready to meet.” He scowls. “Sweet Pea, just try it! All you have to do is pick a song and just blast it to her! Then she’ll either get so annoyed she’ll find you, or we’ll hear her singing it too!” “So you want me to piss my soulmate off before I meet her?” “No, pick a song she likes!” “Wow, yeah hang on let me ask what her favourite song is!” He snaps and you can’t help but laugh.
“Well then pick your favourite? Or something that reminds you of her?” You ask him and he nods. “Okay fine, I’ll start tonight.” “Tonight?” “Well yeah after the Serpent meeting so everyone can be on the look out.” Fangs beams nodding. “I’m glad I could help then.” You smile at Sweet Pea and try not to blush when he smiles back. Toni arches an eyebrow but doesn’t say anything as you bid them goodbye.
You’re sitting in Pop’s half asleep after Vixen practice trying to not pass out before your food shows up when you hear it. You’ve only heard your soulmate actually singing about four times, but it’s one of the things that made you fall in love with him. Of course the comfort of his voice is the last thing you need while trying not to fall asleep. You struggle, trying your best to focus on the actual words; you swallow shocked at the song that he’s singing.
You feel dumb for not thinking about how he caught on to your music habits as much as you have for him. You sit still and enjoy the private concert. You wonder if he picked it up from how often you’d sing it; or if it was the time that you would sing and listen to it. –Load the car and write the note; Grab your bag and grab your coat; Tell the ones that need to know.– You hum faintly, careful to not let the sound too far past your lips, you don’t think you want your soulmate meeting you like this, exhausted and caked in sweat and grime. ————————————————————————————
The song has been playing on repeat for days, anytime your soulmate seems to switch to another song he cuts himself off restarting the song once more. “Hey Kevin, you said you needed help with the sound check?” You watch as Kevin sinks into a chair in the theatre, you smile at Toni and Fangs, the rest of the Serpent’s lounging around, as well as Archie and his friends. “Can you sing?” Cheryl ask and you shrug. “I’ve been taking singing lessons since I was five, so I like to think I can.” You smile.
“Besides I don’t need to sing for a basic sound check.” Kevin coughs slightly. “So I do need to sing?” “Please,  just pick something, and sing into the mic.” You nod gripping the mic and letting your soulmate sart the song for you. “ Oh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in, Are you aware the shape I’m in? My hands they shake, my head it spins, Oh Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in-“ You’ve never heard someone harmoinze with you before but the way the voice from you head blends with yours settles the anxiety in your chest. “Three words that became hard to say, I and love and you” You pause when Kevin holds up his hand.
“That’s great.” He nods and you swing off the stage, Toni and Fangs track your movements and you make your way over to them when they wave. “What?” “Your soulmate was singing that wasn’t he.” “Yeah.” “You want to meet him?” “You know him?” Your face lights up and they falter. “You want to meet him?”
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I?” “Well; he’s a Serpent.” “Do you think I care? Wait, does he not want me?” You cant help the ice that shoots through your chest, already planning  break-up songs to blast when you get home. “What no, he’s just nervous. About everything.” “Why would he be nervous we’re soulmates. I’ll love him no matter what.” “You mean that?” You nod at Fangs. “Uhh okay Pop’s at six?”He rushes out nodding to you and you nod back confused, as Toni almost shoves you to Vixen practice with her. You miss the way the rest of the Serpent’s enter through the side door, Sweet Pea scanning the crowd.
You’d been able to go home early with Toni, she’d explained to Cheryl you were planning on meeting your soulmate and Cheryl had practically shoved you out of the gym, assuring you Toni would help you pick something out to wear. “Does Cheryl really not trust me to find an outfit to wear?” “Well you’re meeting your soulmate, you have to look nice.” “If he’s my soulmate he won’t care what I wear.” “It’s not about that, imagine you meet him and he’s nothing like what you expect him to be.” “Toni I’ve been listening to his music taste flip back and forth, there’s barely any consistency, it took me years to even figure out he was in Riverdale, let alone close by.” Toni nods. “You know Cheryl and I are soulmates right? I had to listen to hours of all the Vixen practice music, before you’d actually practice. So I know a little about that, everyone does.”
“My parents don’t. They couldn’t, they can’t afford to visit to look for their soulmates.” Toni pulls you into a hug. “That’s not you, you have the chance to meet him; why wouldn’t you. Seems even him being a Serpent won’t dissuade you.” “You know him.” Toni nods. “Yes, it’s how we know to meet you.” She smiles and your eyes widen. “You know him.” You repeat and she nods laughing. “Come on, don’t want to be late.” She nudges you as you come up to Pop’s doors.
You step through the doors and Fangs blocks your view; holding out a blindfold. “Don’t say anything we’re going to take them off at the same time; it’ll be cute.” You sigh letting him tie the fabric around your eyes and walk you to a booth, you have no clue who’s sitting in it, it was the only booth away from all of the windows, probably planed by them. “Okay sit down and in three, two, one.” Toni beams and you blink adjusting to the light. “Thanks for the advice by the way. It really helped.” You look across to see Sweet Pea sitting smiling at you.
“Glad the advice could be of use then.” You try your best not to move your hands aware they’re shaking. You can tell Sweet Pea picks up on his eyebrow quirking. “My uh, my parents never met there soulmates, so this is, a bit of a big deal for me. Oh my god I didn’t tell them, they’re gonna kill me.” You look up to see Sweet Pea laughing. “What? This is serious!” He shakes his head.
“It’s not like we don’t; we live in a tiny ass town; besides we go to school, I share five classes with you. We’re not going to part ways and never see each other. Besides, I’d like to get to know you, before I go meet your parents.” “There’s not much to know.” Sweet Pea smirks. “That my dear soulmate is where I beg to differ. You’re my other half. I want to know everything about you.” “Where do I start?” “Well what’s your favourite song?” You can’t help but join in his laughter.

Till the end
This slow burn fic is very different to my other pieces but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. I’m adapting @itsnotoktohit ‘s idea :) X
#1
“Alright, Archie why have you summoned me here?” The beanie-clad boy asked, resting against the wall closest to the door. His eyes were dark and narrowed, clearly conveying his frustration, which her presence essentially brought out. He looked like he was ready to bolt any second. She took in his appearance for a quick moment, not having actually been in such close proximity with him since...the breakup. His hat sat perfectly, protecting his dark curls. His eye bags had gotten worse, his eyes bloodshot with annoyance and tiredness, she guessed. Annoyance at the world her. His brows furrowed with irritation and his arm crossed over his chest defensively. His leather jacket still looked good fitting around his arms: she reminded herself that he was an absolute prick.
She scoffed, rolling her eyes, “Typical.”
“Excuse me?” He retorted. They always had been quick with each other.
She narrowed her own eyes, “I said typical, that you, Forsythe Pendleton Jones the third would think the world revolves around you, when in all fairness, we were all ‘summoned’.” She enunciated every syllable of his name just to piss him off further.
He grimaced at the use of his full name, “Typical of you to feel the need to comment on that.” In his head he cringed at his lame comeback but truth be told, he couldn’t quite think straight with her hands on her hips, in that little outfit. He hated thinking about what she was doing now that he wasn’t holding her down; who she was doing.
Before Betty could reply, Veronica looked up from her phone asking for a charger. She had been quietly sitting in the corner desk, texting away. Betty lent her one and awaited Archie’s speech.
“So are you going to get to the point today, Archiekins?” The raven-haired girl sat with her legs crossed by the plug socket charging her phone, admiring her nails, “Because some of us don’t actually have all day.”
Jughead couldn’t help but feel that was a dig at him when she gave him a glare. He knew the two girls hated him, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t reciprocated. The faster Archie got to the point the quicker he would be able to exit their presence.
Archie seemed distracted observing Betty’s small actions, such as redoing her ponytail or pressing down the creases of her Vixen skirt. This bothered Jughead because, whilst he was his oldest friend and he knew his best friend would never intentionally hurt him, Archie had a weak spot when it came to girls. Jughead and Betty had...history, so to speak, but Archie was a forgetful boy, who would honestly not recognise the uncomfort he would cause for Jughead by making a move on his...ex.
The only term you can describe her with a possessive adjective. How depressing.
The redhead cleared his throat, “Right, yeah, sorry, my point...so basically...I think...I think I want to pursue a music career...like I want to work on that again...I know it kind of died last time I tried, because I got caught up with...well, stuff with my dad and all...but I seriously think I can do it now, like I have the time...I just...What do you guys think?”
The apprehension was so clear in his brown eyes it was actually painful.
Veronica burst out laughing.
Betty bit her grin back.
Jughead raised his eyebrows, expressing a hint of amusement.
“What? What’s so funny?” He immediately asked, getting defensive as his cheeks burned red.
“Nothing-it’s not-it’s not funny-that’s not why-“ Veronica managed to get out.
Betty put a hand on his shoulder, redirecting his attention, and Jughead couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy. She looked so soft with him, so careful, so sweet. And the way he responded...his features immediately calmed down a notch. She just had that effect. This is what he had lost.
Well maybe if it was so easy to lose, he never really had it?
“It isn’t funny. It’s just slightly...you called this meeting because of your new hobby, right? I think we were just expecting something a bit more...” she spoke carefully and gently, thinking about the right words.
She never had to think about what she said with Jughead.
“Serious,” Jughead blurted. She shot him a glare which he ignored.
Archie blushed even more, practically becoming a tomato, “I just wanted...I just wanted support. I wanted to see what you guys thought? Like if I could do it or not. If it’s stupid or...Well, I guess it is.”
Veronica straightened her face, and the atmosphere of the room changed, “You can do it, Arch. I know you can. You do have a beautiful voice. But be prepared for a lot of teasing, okay? A major Troy Bolton moment like this never goes unnoticed.”
“Thanks Ronnie,” he gave her a smile of gratitude before turning to Jughead.
The moody boy sighed, “She’s right about the teasing. Look, man, if it’s what you want to do, go for it. You know I’ll always support you.”
But you couldn’t support me, Betty thought to herself when she caught eye contact with the brooding boy. He seemed to read her mind as he averted his gaze.
Betty wanted to make a snide remark about what his ‘always’ meant but she bit her lip for the sake of her red headed friend.
“Thanks man,” the two did that man hug thing with the fist bump before the pats on the backs. He then turned to Betty.
She smiled at him and Jughead couldn’t help but wonder, was that how she used to smile at him? Or was it different? Was she just the definition of fake? How could she so easily replicate a look? Was it even a replicate? He had forgotten the way he used to make her smile and that alone tugged at his heartstrings.
He despised Betty Cooper and the way, even after their desastrous ending, she had an effect on him like no one else.
“Betty,” the nervous boy awaited her response, hope in his eyes.
She grinned, “Of course you can do it! I know you can, Arch. You’re going to be great.” She didn’t have to say much to make him rejoice. Jughead understood that, just her smile was enough.
She squealed when he lifted her off her feet for a big hug, before saying, “I do have one question though...”
“Shoot,” he put her down on her feet.
“Why was it so necessary for you to call this meeting in the middle of lunch? Like why not just tell us at the table or something?”
‘Us’.
That kind of stung.
Ever since Betty and Jughead’s split, Jughead hadn’t found the need to sit with them at lunch: he didn’t fancy sitting with the jocks like Reggie or mean girls like Cheryl. Besides he didn’t fit in. He knew that. But for her to distinctly say ‘us’ without acknowledging Jughead at all caused him to feel a sharp pain in his organ called the heart.
“Well, to be honest, I didn’t want to be laughed at straight away,” he shot a glare at Veronica who shot her hands up in defense, “and well, if you guys thought I couldn’t do it...well I don’t think I would pursue it and that would just be embarrassing. So basically I just wanted to see your opinions on it first.”
Betty gave him another encouraging smile before enveloping him in a hug.
Veronica wasnt exactly paying much attention to their PDA as she was currently texting, her girlfriend most likely, leaving Jughead standing awkwardly by himself. He didn’t really know where to look but they were just hugging.
They were still just hugging.
He shuffled his feet uncomfortably.
How long does a hug take?
Apparently 8 years 268 days and 15 hours by the looks of it.
Does he need to be here to watch?
Or can he just leave?
Have they just forgotten about his presence then?
Well, most people do.
Jughead didn’t know what she saw in him. To be honest, he didn’t even know what was going on between them. Archie would tell him if they were dating, right? Or would he get nervous it would get weird between him and Jughead then?
What did Betty see in him anyway? He was just a major player. Yes, he was his best friend, but when it came to girls he was careless. Betty, despite being ignorant and a pain in his ass, didn’t deserve that.
It didn’t help that they hadn’t actually reconciled after their breakup-it was still raw and recent. Jughead was still hurting, a lot, but apparently Betty was over it.
Maybe she was just like the other preppy, cheerleaders.
Jughead knew better than that but maybe trying to believe that would make it easier.
Betty pulled away and immediately caught eye contact with Jughead. She looked guilty when his own dark eyes peered into hers in that brief few seconds.
She swallowed and looked away.
Why was she looking guilty?
Archie had been talking but apparently no one was actually listening to him. Veronica was preoccupied and Betty was looking at the floor to the right of her, deep in thought. But Jughead caught onto the last of his little monologue as he joked, “Alright then guys, you are free to leave.”
Jughead did his best to hold in his exasperated sigh of relief as he turned round to face the door, only to nearly be hit in the face by it. The door swung open to reveal Reggie.
“Dude! Do you know what’s going on?” He exclaimed. Alarm was written across his face as he entered the room.
He was quickly followed by a trio of Kevin, Sweet Pea and Fangs. Betty raised her eyebrow at this odd grouping, “What-“
“Betty!” Kevin took her in a huge hug, out of relief. “I have no idea what’s going on, but it looks like a massive storm or something. But there are all these bugs and shit, I don’t know. Principal Weatherbee gave me a bunch of fliers to hand out, here’s one I have left.”
“Stay where you are.
We will come and find you to give you supplies.
Do not panic.
There has been a weather warning regarding an extreme effect of climate change over a short period of time. This included fires breaking out, floods, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and others. There has also been an outbreak of a certain toxic gas across the town. The source is unknown. There may also been unclassified insects free in the air. Stay indoors till further updates.
You will be seen to shortly.
Do not panic.”

Athletes
Sweet Pea x Reader.
A/N: aahhhhh idk what this is but it's a thing so, enjoy.
----------------------------------
Sweet Pea POV
“Nah dude forget it, yn is Champagne and Caviar, you're more like tap water and a Mars bar”
“I could be Champagne and...whatever the second thing was Fangs” I pushed his shoulder as he laughed. Damn my best friend for being right. Yn was those things, I was just a peasant, a simpleton...a Serpent, not good enough for her.
“Besides dude Kevin says she's super into guys who are sporty and I don't think she counts motocross as a sport, snob”
“She's not a snob!...I think and thanks for asking anyway, you get a wingman point” he did a little bow and I laughed before returning my attention to cheerleader surrounded by her admirers. Who am I kidding, out of my league.
~
I sat in the back of AP Physics class, lost in doodles while Ms. Curie droned on about magnets or her husband or something when my interest suddenly peaked. My cheerleader walked in, handed Ms.Curie a note before they both smiled and next thing I knew YN was sitting next to me, physics book in hand. She gave me a little confused look and then a smile, shit, I was clearly staring at her.
“Okay so why don't you discuss with your partner that theory and I'll be back in a few moments I just have to ring my husband” she made her escape and the class began to hum to life with anything and everything except for physics.
“Im Yn...thats a cool drawing” she gestured to the combustion engine I had absentmindedly penned.
“Oh thanks, I'm Sweet Pea...I thought Kevin said you did Chemistry?”
“Excuse me?” She was laughing and it was then I realised I had let slip that I was doing recon. Stupid Sweets Stupid! My eyes darted back to the engine I could easily make sense of.
“Umm well you tell Kevin he needs to update his intel-” okay so she's laughing so she's not annoyed or creeped out...maybe she is and she's just polite.
“-i was doing Chemistry but I finished the course at home over winter and I just thought I'd try AP Physics”
“oh right right, casual for a cheerleader to do, nothing easier left?” I smiled and she didn't.
“Why isn't it? I'd prefer if you didn't lump all Cheerleaders into the same stereotypical category. I know you're a Serpent but i haven't stereotyped you, you're in a gang from an underprivileged school, what are you doing in AP Physics?” The last comment dripped with sarcasm, the rest with annoyance, whoops.
“i didnt-I-eh”
“Yeah, I thought so” she swivelled back to her book and I was almost cursing myself aloud as the bell rang.
“Oh and by the way, I find Physics easy, jerk” she said in passing as she gathered her things and practically stomped out the door.
~
I told Fangs later what happened and he very nearly almost fell off the bench laughing. He then did actually fall when I pushed him. Toni just shook her head in disapproval and Jughead joined Fangs laughing on the the floor I guided him towards.
“It's really not that funny, she hates me now!”
“It's hilarious Sweet Pea but don't worry about it, really. Yn is really lovely once you get to know her...and don't underestimate her.-” Jones laughed through his sentence but I still believed him slightly. He knew more about this concrete world and it's inhabitants than we did, I'd just have to take him at his word.
“-Anyway, really you're barking up the wrong tree if you wanna get further than friends. Rumor is she only dates athletes and I don't think pool counts”
“Wow everyone just loves attacking my idea of sports….what else could I do here?”
“Boxing?” Toni offered and Fangs laughed.
“Nah SP, you'd win every fight but not by following the rules”
“Football?”
“They're on hiatus for the winter” I sighed aloud as my friends racked their brains, I found myself locking eyes with YN as she passed. She bit her lip and then returned to her conversation. Ugh god what a mess, I buried my face in my hands and that's when it hit me. No I mean, it literally hit me.
“WHO THE FUCK THREW THIS BASKETBALL!?” I stood to my feet after retrieving the ball, Fangs standing too. Archie jogged over and apologised, explaining he was attempting to teach Betty. Unlikely story but I saw YN stare and decided to simply return the ball... for a favor. I just found my new hobby.
Archie was helpful in getting me easily into the tryout, I dragged Fangs along to as he enjoyed basketball but mostly he wanted to impress Kevin.I was warming up with Fangs as Yn, Cheryl and the rest of the cheerleaders sauntered in for practice. Damn I'm going to be distracted. The sight of me seemed to catch her off guard and she raised an eyebrow at me when I caught the ball Fangs threw. Let's do this.
~
Damn I forgot how much I loved Basketball, it was nice to have a coach that actually cared about technique for once. I had never been so in the zone and clearly it made me cheesy.
“So YN wouldn't shut up about you after your try out today” my new friend Veronica smiled at me before I ducked inside Physics where yn sat. We both remained in silence for a little while before I broke.
“Yn I'm really sorry I offended you, I didn't mean to and I know that doesn't make it okay but I'm sorry”
“It's alright Sweet Pea, I'm used to it...you were great at tryouts today, hope you make it” she batted her eyelashes and my heart melted. Damn her.
~
Next day we were called into the gym to see who made the team. Yn and the rest of the cheerleaders were practicing, this didn't help with my nerves. I had spent the night previous texting her and her constant reassurance both settled and put pressure on me all at once.
My name was called and it was like this huge weight shattered from my shoulders, they handed me that blue and gold jacket I hated so much. Yn ran over to me when they finished with the names, wrapping her arms around me.
“Congrats Sweet Pea!” I tried my best not to completely squish her in the hug but I simply wanted to always be this close.
~
The following time after I became entirely immersed in this world, in her world. Whenever she was on the sidelines I was winning and let's just say I spent a lot of time winning. We became kind of inseparable, the stereotype of star athlete and head cheerleader. I kind of loved it. To add to this developing relationship was a little thing involving basketball. The championship. We were in it! Never in a million years did I think we'd get this far but we were here!!! And wow did training get intense. Too intense.
“Wanna hang out later Pea?”
“Can't, practice” she sighed in annoyance at me while leaning against my locker. If I was honest I had been blowing her off a lot lately but she only dates athletes and that's what I'm doing sooo. Fangs threw himself alongside her with Jug and Toni close behind.
“Come on SP we're going to the quarry”
“We can't Fangs, we have practice”
“Nah I'm not going today, need a break and besides Kevin is going to come to the quarry” this was met with sounds of oohs and ahhs as well little shoves. They were almost as cute as Yn and I.
“Alright alright leave it” he was defensive but was was slowly warming to our teasing.
“Anyway come on SP let's go”
“Nah I'm going to practice”
“Fine, yn?” Her head snapped to his with pure shock. In general they had a turbulent relationship, just kind of existing in my world at once. She was entirely happy to be invited along and after kissing my cheek goodbye she disappeared off with them.
I was still training by myself when the Serpent's ascended on the place, my wonderful weird friends, who were getting in the way of practice.
Toni snatched ball from me and began passing it around me much to my protest, yn watching laughing from the bleachers. I didn't find it funny.
“Guys come on stop! I need to practice”
“No way dude, it's time to take it easy” I fumbled at Fangs managing to take the ball, shooting and making the hoop. The Serpent's cheered and then stole the ball again and were running circles around me.
“Guys seriously fuck off I need to practice!”
“Dude relax! You're taking this too seriously!”
“No I'm not fucking joking Toni!” This only poked the dragon.
Toni passed to Jug and Jug to Fangs. I went to intercept Fangs pass to Ryan, missing and falling in possibly the awkwardest way possible. There was a deafening crunch met with searing pain. Fuck. The pain coursed through me until I actually blacked out.
~
I took the tendon in my foot almost clean off the bone and after they had almost fixed it, I was left unable to play...or walk...or breath too much. Yn wheeled me out of the hospital with Fangs carrying my things. Their guilt was immense but my worry was worse. This was the end for yn and me. No foot. No game. No jacket. No girlfriend. No hope.
“Right I'll go get the car, you two wait here by the entrance” he was missing the championship to be here with me, did I mention that he felt guilty?
“I'm sure you'll be able for next season Pea, don't worry"
“And if not I suppose you'll be off”
“Excuse me?” I huffed at her confusion, turning my wheelchair from here, the painkillers a godsend.
“It means you'll be off with some other guy by then”
“And why do you think that”
“Because yn, everyone knows you only date athletes and I don't know if I'll ever be one again” she caught the handle of my chair and swung me around. She bent down so she was eye level with me, her hands still gripping the handles. Kind of hot.
“Who said that?”
“Everyone, everyone says it”
“Well everyone's wrong. I date whoever I want and yes they do tend to be athletes but that's only because I'm around them 6 days a week! The first time you spoke me you stereotyped me and now you're doing it again!” she pushed slightly from the handles but not enough to move me. She tucked her arms into her chest very clearly annoyed.
“So now you're going to break up with me?” I said smally.
“No! Of course not! We're just having an argument and that's okay! Ugh it's like you've never had a girlfriend or something!” The air between us suddenly changed. Oh shit.
“Wait...you've never had a girlfriend have you” I could only shake my head slowly, eyes locked on her feet. Her arms dropped to her sides and she sighed.
“It's okay Pea, but you just need to know I'm not going to dump you for something stupid like this conversation” she crouched down by my side and leaned in to kiss me. I gladly accepted, loving every moment I was this close. We were interrupted by Fangs as he attempted to break the horn of my car.
“oh I see you're using a different kind drug SP” He called from the driver's seat.
“Yeah same one you and Kevin are using” I could only smile at my girlfriend at her comeback while she wheeled me to the front seat of the car. We ultimately lost the championship, but I couldn't care less.

The week in review:
Raw 09/28 NXT 09/30 NXT UK 10/01 Smackdown 10/02 Takeover 31 10/04
Tumblr media
Raw:
Tumblr media
*bell rings*, *Asuka runs straight at her opponent*, *gets punched once by some weak ass looking shot*, *collapses uselessly* PPPFFFFTTTTTTTT
I hate that elbow kick off thing Zelina does. Becky used to have a hold like that in nxt. Hated it then, too. Awful.
That hurricanrana where Zelina fell on her ass, though. Wow. Okay.
Is it just me that thought the modified grounded octopus took awhile to cinch in? That was in for so long lol.
Why are women barely jumping for these german suplexes lately?
Omg that one-armed suplex by Asuka was great.
That kickout by Asuka was incredibly well done. What a perfect stretch with perfect timing. Zelina even tucked the left arm. Points.
Oh nice didn’t know Zelina could do a moonsault. And right onto the knees so the Asuka lock can be set in. Nice. Good ending.
That was better than their Clash match, and Zelina showcased different things, even if I wasn’t a fan of some of it.
Tumblr media
Ah the debut of Mandy and Dana as a tag team.
I really like Lana and Nattie together.
Oh wow decisions that make sense and are building toward something. What alternate universe have I stepped into? Please bring back GMs and stop being so lazy, please.
I really don’t understand why they moved these women like weeks before the draft.
Alright let’s swap momentum... it’s time Dana gets some comeback before tagging Mandy.
That full 180 flip Mandy did to Lana was really cool. Not sure if Lana was meant to land on her left knee or flat, but I think it was supposed to injure her left knee. Beautiful.
Points to Lana for the kickout, negative points to Nattie for jumping in after the three.
I wish Dana had hit a bigger move against Natalya at the end.
The pump knee strike by Mandy was a little messy, I would’ve ended it with her other finisher instead. Good match though. Glad to see Dana and Mandy pick up some sort of momentum, especially on their Raw debut.
Also good for Lana not having to go through the table for a week *applause*
Tumblr media
Mandy is fine on the mic. It’s not awful, it’s not super compelling; totally serviceable. Dana though... always comes off like she’s acting rehearsed lines or reading off a script.
Nice transition into the next segment. Quarter point.
Tumblr media
Whether I like the Bianca video packages or not, it’s always a pleasure to hear her song.
LOVED the incorporation of the hurdles. That’s what I want to see, that shows me an actual challenge. I have no doubt in her strength or speed; I in fact do believe she’s the strongest and the fastest. They just aren’t showcasing that right lol. Give me something more convincing. Girl was jumping over fucking hurdles, that’s convincing.
Highlight: Dana & Mandy vs Lana & Nattie

Shotzi has too long of an entrance imo.
Dakota Kai is such a spoiled little shit lmao. She’s so annoying. Big fan.
Really didn’t like Shotzi trying to do her ballpit line so early. I really wish she didn’t take so long to set it up as well.
Wow I hate that submission move Shotzi, I’m sorry. Dakota sells it like death though, so she gets a point.
Dakota’s style is way too fast for her to play a slow, methodical heel in the ring.
A one count lmao ballsy. Love Dakota’s reaction too.
Such a fan of Dakota’s selling.
Chicken wing german suplex into a pin? That was beautiful Shotzi, I agree. Great near fall.
A common complaint I have with women - even on the main roster - is how they go to do like a spear halfway through the ropes just to set up some counter to their move (kick, a pump kick, the rope hangup Bayley does, Charlotte shooting through the middle to roll you up) and that’s fine, but it’s always easily telegraphed. Step up please @ everyone.
oof that landing by Dakota; hit her face right on Shotzi’s knee.
What does Dakota call that kick, Scorpion or something? On the apron? Awesome stuff.
Holy shit that... flipping backdrop - (?) I don’t even know what to call that - on the apron was amazing, but holy shit Shotzi that landing was terrible. The concept is there but man you might wanna practice/modify that one a bit more.
Cool Rhea came down to fuck with Raquel, distracting Dakota, but the rollup was weak. Also weak that Rhea merely pushed Raquel into the steps once before walking back. Good match though.
Tumblr media
Stalemate after a bunch of pin attempts with zero offense. Could live without these spots tbh.
Very close range kick, could’ve been set up far better.
Li rolls out of the ring, heel 101.
Kacy you can’t just yell at Kayden to get up lmao plz.
This is the first time I’ve seen any personality from Xia Li.
Ballsy one counts, what’s with the one counts tonight lmao.
Kacy is a bad cheerleader, just getting that out there.
I love that roll through + side kick combo Kayden does.
Whoa idk how Kayden pulled that win out of her ass, but good for her. I can see this is pushing Xia deeper into frustration every loss. Won’t complain about it, love to see Kayden win. Good, short match. A rollup works here.
Highlight: Dakota vs Shotzi

NXT UK:

I love Xia Brookside’s music, but not with her or her entrance.
Now Jinny’s entrance/wardrobe/demeanor matches her music.
Sure Xia Brookside’s rolls were quick, but I’m not understanding why she rolled sideways lmao it’s like Link in Zelda.
If you’re not going to add an actual crowd or monitors, get rid of the hairdryer fans. If I can’t see them, and more importantly they don’t exist, then I don’t want to hear them.
Too many wrist locks. Also refs getting involved for no logical reason, just so the heel can take advantage, is annoying.
That back drop onto Jinny’s knee was ugly, hated the collapse. Took the impact out of it for me.
Nasty Irish Whip, points to both.
Nice flip off the hurricanrana.
Botched monkey flip. Perhaps Jinny didn’t think there was enough room for her to comfortably land; had she went for it and tucked her legs she definitely would’ve been fine. Feel like that was an amateur mistake, plenty of women would’ve just sold it with their legs getting caught up.
That was weird. Xia Brookside goes through all that trouble just to make sure she hit the monkey flip, just to lift Jinny’s head so Jinny could punch her. Weak.
Kick out was sloppy.
Xia Brookside is gassed and isn’t even doing any offense. Or selling. This match is odd. This would get booed on the MR.
Jinny stops to talk too much while wrestling. Obviously stalling. The dialogue isn’t even good for all of that noise.
Whatever. A match I could’ve lived without.
Lmao bow down? Queen of NXT UK?? Girl.... uh uh. Nah nah nah Go sit down.
Highlight: There was an Irish Whip into the corner that looked impactful

Alexa’s pyro was better timed than last week, but it could use improvement. This is important to me damn it.
You know Alexa, my spine feels cold and my body goes numb every time I smoke my weed. Has anyone asked this girl if she’s on drugs? Could just be drugs.
Kevin/wwe, I don’t need you to tell me she’s brainwashed. WE CAN SEE that she’s brainwashed. This has been escalating for like... 2 months lmao.
The hairdryer crowd being piped in kinda ruins this. This is set up like a scene from a horror movie and the noise is taking away from it. A live crowd probably would’ve stayed silent for her, you could’ve lessened the mass effect.
Love how she just sits there watching Kevin pace around. That’s good. She’s good. Love how Kevin knew she was calling to the Fiend with that line. That’s good. This is good.
She sits there poised and unafraid, yet intrigued with him. Like his queen.
The power of this angle and the fate of it succeeding lies solely on Alexa and her selling of it. If she doesn’t sell this or believe in it, or fucks up once, it shatters the entire mystique. Man I’m a huge fan of this story rn.
Tumblr media
Glad I didn’t bother guessing who this mysterious woman was. The glitz and glamour has got nothing compared to the moonwalking, trashtalking, Princess of Staten Island.
Love the rainbow on the polaroid camera though.
Decent enough promo but that music was awkward.
Tumblr media
Why did y’all make Sasha just stand out there shifting her feet staring at the hard cam lol.
This is all solid Sasha but like Bayley already admitted all of this lmao.
Yes, we know you saved her title like 15 times, we ALL agree with you.
I actually like the emotion written all over Sasha’s face that comes across as ALMOST awkward.
What I don’t like about this feud: Sasha’s still an asshole, and I’m not sure how I’m supposed to buy her as a babyface in like 3 weeks. She has the sympathy vote in a meta sense, sure, and I’ve been saying I want her to run SD on her own since November 2019, but that doesn’t mean she’s automatically a babyface within kf. Also annoying that they haven’t had a brawl that ends on equal footing, via interruption by officials or something. Also not sure how much I buy the character of Bayley being “too scared” to come to SD. If I could’ve gotten a quick interview by her, even if it’s her leaving the arena just as she finds out Sasha has arrived, that would’ve tied this together better.
Why she still staring at the hard cam lmao. Walk away. Leave. Make your exit. Alright whatever.
Highlight: Alexa becoming the Fiend’s queen

Takeover 31:
Tumblr media
Man true, I forget Io has beat both Charlotte and Sasha this year. What a big year for her.
Love how this entire “arena” is set up, but my covid-paranoia does not approve.
Lol that one single guy trying to start a chant, goodbye.
BEAUTIFUL corrected monkey flip by Io
The attempt at the springboard by Candice was there. Could’ve been cleaner.
Good transition having Candice counter Io into a backstabber in the corner, cuz that offense was taking way too long to set up.
Commentator attributed Candice being slow in the beginning because she’s sad Johnny lost. Tired of the Garganos being tied to each other.
Why is every female heel on every brand dragging people’s eyes/face across the ropes all of the sudden?
It was not a nice move, she needs to stop doing her poor woman’s version of Natural Selection. Done.
Y’all are losing me, give Io some momentum plz.
Every single heel wants to go slow and methodical. Ridiculous. Where’s Sasha.
This was not paced well, ESPECIALLY compared to their first match. Their first didn’t breathe enough and was a sprint with not enough selling, but it was still really good. This is paced on the complete opposite spectrum. And not good.
Io has the best dropkick in the division, especially when you consider how safe her landing is for her own body’s longevity.
Totally no sold that powerbomb, Io. That’s a yikes.
Lmao Io kicked out of Candice’s springboard moonsault. Haha.
Got a meteora, 2 backstabbers, and a crossface... again, where’s Sasha???
Lmfao 2 ref bumps and a fake referee. GOD I HATE HOW WOMEN’S MATCHES ARE BOOKED THIS YEAR. The first bump didn’t even look legit.
Io took a title shot to the face yet kicked out, and y’all out here calling Becky “Cena” for kicking out of a chair shot to the midsection? Annoying.
I’m now convinced Charlotte has the best Spanish fly in the entire women’s division.
Tumblr media
Rich having Toni do a promo directly aimed at Io, considering Toni beat her to win the MYC. Also rich how unbothered Io seemed lmao.
Tumblr media
Ahhh the nxt women’s champion that should’ve won her title by defeating Asuka. We remember her well. Injured herself chasing the 24/7 title back when they were running the Becky/Charlotte vs Sasha/Bayley feud. Good times.
Highlight: Io’s theme song
---
*NXT shined the brightest out of all the other shows, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t give major props to specifically Alexa Bliss.

Heathers Rehearsals: Candy Store and Script Work
The next number is ‘Candy Store’ and this song is the moment that really highlights to the audience how much bullying and nastiness the Heathers are capable of. It is a number that I am heavily involved in, as I am a Heather and so I did some research, self reflection and a lot of practice to help me achieve this number successfully. Our tutor told us that we would have to get the movements into our bodies as it’s quite an intricate dance routine with isolated positions and bitty sections where we swap and change and very rarely do the same movement at the same time except small sections, but if done right this routine will be very effective.
Script
Before the number begins, there is a section of script that happens between the Heathers, Veronica and the Jocks. We are at the front of the stage at this point, not long after ‘Beautiful’ has ended, so it  is important we continue the mean girl approach while still getting our individual characters across to the audience. This part of the script is where Heather Chandler, who now knows of Veronica’s forgery skills after ‘Beautiful’, orders Veronica to write a note to Ram pretending that its from Veronica’s best friend Martha as Martha has had a crush on Ram for such a long time and the Heathers know it will bring a lot of embarrassment for Martha as they know that Ram has no feelings for her. Veronica’s hesitance is what starts the number, springing the Heathers into action of peer pressuring Veronica into the task. A part of the script I have is “oh my God, I totally forgot, Ram kissed Martha Dumptruck, it was disgusting”, and the way I deliver this is with a high pitched and ditsy voice, making sure to emphasise the purposeful mispronunciation of the name to highlight the bullying that the audience members have probably seen many times in their real lives and triggering a potential memory.
There is an interesting moment between the Heathers, Heather Duke collects Veronica for Heather Chandler, and when she arrives back to Chandler and McNamara, Heather instructs Duke to bend over so she has something to write on, which made me even more sure that there was a definite difference between the treatment of Duke and McNamara, which continues throughout the number also. This lead me to continue playing my character as if she is stupid, as it works for her and means that Duke is always the one who gets mistreated as opposed to McNamara, but this could also mean that McNamara is cleverer than she lets on. When this happens and Duke has bent over for Chandler, I decide to shift on my feet and look away from what is happening after shooting Chandler a scared look from behind her and stepping backwards, as McNamara has an ongoing battle with her morals, without fully knowing how to handle them yet.
Vocals
When learning the vocals, this number is especially finicky as there are many chops and changes as to who is singing and when, which sounds fantastic but took a lot of learning, focus and practice. In an earlier post I discussed our timetable, and this was very useful for me for this number as I could look ahead and learn as much as I could to ensure that the harmony work could go smoothly and I could focus on learning the vocals without having to worry about the lyrics, and this will also make it easier for my tutor and the rest of the cast to continue moving forward to work on bigger ensemble pieces.
All of the Heathers were placed on the melody, so we could keep up with adding lots of character and producing a strong routine, and our version of the show has been amended to have all of the cast added onto the harmonies to make the vocals stronger, and to support us through the number and I think it makes a good improvement on the number. The final high note riffs have also been changed and we have created an innovative idea and other cast members do the high notes and form their own group of Heathers for a split second before the original Heathers wave a hand and they cut off. There was one particular part that I struggled with in the vocals, however, as on the last set of ‘it’s my candy store’s I am on the middle harmony, and was really struggling to match it without clashing to the track. To overcome this is took a lot of repetition and practising with the soundtrack to hear other voices and continue to stay on my harmony and slowly this started to improve and I now can produce the harmony successfully. Below is a link that takes you to a video where I have included the final section and the bit I was struggling with.
Dance Routine  and Acting Through Dance
The dance routine I found very challenging but I was determined to get it right and do it to the best of my ability because I understand that this number is one of the well known numbers and also the one that asserts the Heathers power and so it can’t be shaky or unsure in any way. I have to include an effortless sense of dance, that this is something that comes easy to McNamara, as she is head cheerleader whilst also adding enough attack, but not so much that it looks too much or overdone.
I asked my tutor before we started the dance rehearsals what kind of intention she envisioned behind the dancing, as I was aware that throughout the show there has to be a difference in level between Heather Duke and McNamara and Heather Chandler as Heather Chandler is above everyone and my characterisation so far has been klutzy and stupid, and I recognised that this mightn’t be the correct intent for the atmosphere this song needs to create. My tutor suggested that we should all be nasty, sassy, mean girls in this number, and leave individual characterisations at the beginning of the number and pick them back up at the end of it. I really liked this take on the song, as it makes it more threatening and shows the audience why we’re in charge of the school. A big part of the movement of the number is moving in uniformity and as a unit, we move together whenever we move around the stage and try to keep the same triangle that we always come back to.
In some of the dance sections, the bit I struggled with was retaining all of the movements. It’s very rare for us as the Heathers to do the same movement apart from in some sections which adds to the effect of the dance but I had to use extra focus to remember which move was on which count and not get distracted by the other Heathers and what they were doing. The only thing I found helped me with this was constant rehearsals and making sure that I had the movements well memorised so I could add character on top of this and make sure the movements looked well polished and technically correct.
For example, the link below contains a video of the dance routine when it was first blocked and is it is a very rough version, but I felt like this helped me see where I need to improve more as it wasn’t clean and perfect. I noticed that I need to be much more muscular in my approach with my arms in certain moves like the motorbike handle section, and I spent a lot of my time off stage and at home practising the way I walk as on the video I realised I move my arms too much and it doesn’t look sleek enough, and so I used the technique from ‘Beautiful’ and made sure to lead with my chest and have my arms relatively still with only natural swing, this actually helped me to stay in character as well as letting some of the Heather McNamara character be present even though I’m quite sassy in this performance.
A problem that I also encountered was stamina. I realised that throughout this number I was struggling to sing and dance at the same time, and this was picked up on from my tutor and it was discussed that it was something that I needed to improve, which I dramatically agreed with, even more so considering that I have solo lines that have to be delivered in the middle of the song and this song cannot show any flaws it has to be precise for the point of it to be understood. You can see in the link to the video below how out of breath I am for my solo section, and how much the energy drops because of this. To overcome this obstacle my tutor and I discussed in feedback that I should dance and sing completely full out on every run of this number and drop out on vocals where I need to, but be mindful on where that is and try to get further as I progress, and I noticed a definite change and was able to start singing my parts quite well.
Research Into Candy Store
Upon research, I discovered that this song had actually replaced a song called ‘Human Connection’. It is said that this version of the song made had Chandler justify her nasty ways with twisted logic that would make the audience question their morals, however, according to Playbill (2018), Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy reveal that “ this approach weakened Chandler’s character. As undisputed dictator of the school, Chandler would have no reason to lie. She fears nobody and nothing, so she readily admits to Veronica that she enjoys hurting people because she can” which confirms that the girls would have a nasty but nonchalant approach to this number because they can do whatever with a click of their fingers. Playbill, (2018) also goes on to say that Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy suggest that this is when ‘Candy Store’ is discovered: “we dug deeper and found a song that makes Heather’s cruelty feel fierce and joyful” which will be a thrill for the audience to watch as it could be confusing as to them as to why they’re thinking its a good number and song when it’s about something so cruel. That will be enticing for the audience as well as “a more retro sound that felt a bit like Ann-Margret and Amy Winehouse were throwing a party with En Vogue. A happy accident and fun to dance to too.” as it is a sound that is quite new for a musical theatre production but one that will be nostalgic and is catchy which makes it a crowd pleaser, and this as well as a good performance is one that is important.

The Partner Revealed - Part 4
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9
Pairing: Jughead Jones x Reader
Description: How will things unfold after Jughead stood up Y/N? How will the mystery of Jason’s death be affected by Dilton’s confession?
Warnings: None I can think of.
Word count: 3128
A/N: Y/F/F stands for Your Favorite Flavor. Thank you all for the comments asking for more, it hope you enjoy this next part :)
Y/N’s point of view
Y/N wakes up, but stays in bed, not because it’s comfortable – it’s just her limbs that can’t seem to move. She gets up after several minutes of lying down motionless. She looks at her reflection in the mirror glued on the back of her door, eyes puffy and red. “Was I crying?” A little confirmation as she runs her fingers down her wet cheeks.
She’s angry, not at him, at herself, for thinking things could be different or that they would change. Her mind wondering why she even likes him. Is it the suspenders? Maybe the ‘S’ T-shirts? Could be the mystery underneath the crown-shaped beanie? Probably his sardonic humor? Possibly his way with words? Maybe it was everything in one, the combination of it all.
Her thoughts are interrupted by the phone vibrating. Text message:
From: Mom
Where are you?
From: Y/N
Wasn’t feeling good so I stayed in. I’m heading to school now.
From: Mom
Glad you’re ok, let us know if you need anything.
From: Y/N
Principal Weatherbee called you?
From: Mom
With everything that happened this summer I’m surprised he isn’t already searching for you at the river lol :)
Y/N laughs at her mom using slang, and knowing who she got her humor from.
Principal Weatherbee is waiting for her when she arrives. He tells her about his worries about the classes she missed - twice in a row - fearing the reason could be ‘Mr. Jones’. “I’d hate if your focus on school were deviated.” She has to use all her self control not to laugh when he says the boy is not a great influence. She’s not sure if it’s because he may be completely right or entirely wrong about Jughead. He asks her to wait for the next class at the library.
Jughead’s point of view
Jughead can’t close his eyes, the guilt is eating him alive. “How could I have forgotten her?”  Since that night by the river she has been a constant in his mind. Earlier that day she skipped class to make him feel better and he left her waiting at Pop’s only to sit with the friend who left him hanging all summer, a raven-haired girl he only knew by name, and the perfect girl next door. He won’t let that be the end of them.
Today is his turn to spend the morning looking for Y/N. Unfortunately, she’s quite good at hiding, just like him. But he eventually finds her in the library behind a pile of books, her face buried in an open book. Before even entering the library, he just stands there for a moment, enjoying the way she looks, so peaceful and beautiful. Once he speaks to her, all that can change. He’s not used to being this nervous, but there’s a lot in stake now.
He gathers his entire courage and don’t-give-a-damn attitude to sit in the chair in front of her, the wall of books still separating those young detectives. He moves them away to have a clear view of her face, still deep within what she’s reading. “Y/N”, he says softly, since she hasn’t noticed his presence, or is simply ignoring him. “Hey, Jughead.” She’s so hurt he can feel that in those few words. It breaks him. “I have to apologize.” He gives her a hand-made ticket granting a milkshake, fries and a burger at Pop’s. “You don’t have to do this.” Her words are contradictory to her actions as she holds that single piece of paper with more care than any of her books, so carefully as if it was the most precious thing in the whole universe. “I do, and I want to.” His face is showing the desperation for forgiveness.
He’s filled with relief when she forgives him, certain that she’s not one to hold a grudge. Still, he doesn’t plan on ever needing her exoneration ever again. He feels more like himself now, regaining his own confidence. “If you really wanna make it up to me there’s something you can do.”, she says playfully but seriously at the same time. “You name it.” He has a smirk on his face, ready to take on the assignment. “Who’s the one person we know was at Sweet Water River on July 4th besides the Blossoms?”, she asks rhetorically. “ Dilton Doiley and his scouts.”, he shoots and she shivers. “Right, so you’re gonna talk to him and find out what happened when he found Cheryl.”, she whispers, for the librarian was looking kinda angrily at them. “Not to push my luck, but why me?, he asks, trying to understand the girls reaction when he said the scout’s name. “The boy freaks me out.” Jughead also feels that way, only to a lesser extent. “But don’t worry, it’s not gonna be all sunshine and rainbows for me. I’m gonna stick with she-Devil Blossom.”, Y/N says with a little regret. He thinks it’s probably because no one would like to stakeout that crazy cheerleader. “Last night, before you stood...”, she stopped for a second. “...me up.”, he thought sadly. “Cheryl ran off the stage and I heard her talking to Veronica. She said her brother was supposed to come back.” It feels as if she understood him finishing her sentence, but they keep on talking about the investigation, probably because it’s the best path. “I know it’s too movie-plot like, but do you think they could’ve tried to fake his death so he could skip town?”, he asks, already working on 20 different scenarios in his mind, some a little Hitchcockian, others more Lynne Ramsay-like. However, giving the way Jason turned out, it all sounded very plausible.
Y/N’s point of view
He helps her put the books back on the shelves, picking up the didactic ones that were piled in front of her earlier. She closes the one she was reading, revealing a Lovecraft cover, earning a smile from Jughead. “Maybe it’s that darn smile that blinds me.”, she thinks and they make their way to their Biology class. She can’t help wondering if he’s doing that only to make up for his lapse or he’d do that regardless. Y/N stops her thoughts as she doesn’t want to live her life second guessing everyone’s actions.
They walk inside and notice some people are already working together, but the pairs are not the same. “We’re still lab partners, right?” She gives away to some of her insecurities in that question. “Who else would accept to do all the practice?”, he asks in his usual sardonic humor. They sit next to each other and take a look at the board. Their lesson is on the body systems - circulatory, nervous, endocrine, immune and reproductive. Almost everybody else is making jokes about the latter, their books full of bad drawings. Betty, Veronica, Kevin, and Archie exchange looks with them, forming a group not afraid of sex. Astonishingly, the only one not belonging to any party is Cheryl Blossom.
The “fun” is broken when Sheriff Keller shows up at the door to take that red-haired girl in for questioning. After she says “Because I’m guilty.”, Jughead and Y/N’s eyes follow her being escorted out of class wondering what she meant by her words.
Jughead’s point of view
When Jug opens his locker, a note falls out. He hurriedly picks it up, thinking it’s from Y/N. His happiness over it is short-lived, because it’s from Betty. She asks him to meet her at the Blue and Gold’s office.
He obliges and she greets him with a proposition: to write for the school’s paper on Jason’s murder. He almost refuses, for he’s already writing his own novel on it and sleuthing with Y/N, but, after lots of convincing from Betty, he finally accepts. He laughs at his first mission: interrogating Dilton. “It’s already in my to-do list.”, he shares. Cooper just smiles back.
He’s conflicted if he’ll tell Y/N about Betty inviting him to write for the paper. Maybe she wouldn’t consider it a great idea, and he doesn’t want to lose her simply because they’re on rocky grounds. Nevertheless, not telling her would certainly mean ending their relationship for good. He decides to only mention it if casual conversation  brings it up.
Jug goes to their usual rendezvous, arriving before her. He tries to take the time to write the next paragraph of his novel, but a writer’s block prevents him. His brain can’t seem to focus on anything other than the Y/H/C girl who’s about to meet him there. Also, he’s eager to know what she got from detailing Cheryl. He looks away from his screen just as she walks in, noticing for the first time that her clothes hug her body perfectly. It’s advisable, though, to think of something else as she approaches.
Y/N’s point of view
She enters Pop’s and Jughead is already waiting for her with a milkshake, Y/F/F. “So, did you find out?”, he asks, closing the lid on his laptop before she even has time to sit down. “Gossip is like a virus and I’m not immune to it.” They both laugh at her corny joke. “Turns out your far-fetched theory is right. Jason wanted to fake his death.”, she takes a sip from the tall glass containing her favorite drink. “Someone said something about them hearing a gunshot.”, Jug adds what he knew from Archie, but couldn’t tell her before without outing his friend. “One more reason to talk to Dilton.”, she pronounces his name with hesitation. “Ok, you HAVE to tell me your deal with Doiley.” He can’t help his curiosity any longer. “He’s a Master Scout. For him, animal torture is considered a means to mature. I tried talking to him about it once and he ate a bug in front of me, claiming it was survival skills.” She’s hoping he won’t think she’s a freak but the look on his face reassures her he understands her point of view.
As they were leaving the diner, they see Veronica in a car with Versety Coach’s son, Chuck Clayton. She isn’t friends with the Lodge girl, but anyone going out with him is on her pity list. Y/N just wishes there’s more to it than it looks like. It’d be perfect if she played the player. A whole plan to unmask him, outing the whole scheme, crosses her mind for a brief moment.
Jughead doesn’t even have to insist on walking her home that night. The closer they get, stronger is her wish to live a little more down the road so she could walk with him a bit longer. They say their goodbyes and she goes up to her room in a completely different mood she did the previous night, now knowing Weatherbee was wrong about Jughead. She’s scrolling through Instagram when a picture of the couple they spotted earlier shows up, with maple syrup edited over Veronica’s face, another victim of the sticky maple. “Just to think it could have happened to me because I tutored Jason... Thank goodness I always chose a public place with tons of eyewitnesses. ”
Jughead’s point of view
He takes his free period to go to the Avengers Scouts headquarters to have a word with the boy he now isn’t so fond of, after hearing about Y/N’s reasons for not being a fan herself. The fact that he’s writing an article for the Blue and Gold gives him freedom to ask questions without sounding snoopy, but Dilton doesn’t take it well. Jughead is very direct and precise and would really like Dilton to cooperate, but he keeps budging. One of his scouts flinches at the sight of Jug asking his Master questions. That’s definitely something he has to share with Y/N.
To: Y/N
Meet me at Pop’s right after school. Jughead.
He sends it, using the phone number she gave him for the first time, then rushes to the diner.
The booth he was used to being alone at now felt lonely and too silent. He is getting used to sharing it with the chocolate-ginger-smelling girl. The second she walks in he tells her about his plan to talk directly with the scout who flinched - he happens to be at Pop’s as well. “Go intimidate the kid and get us some answers.”, she instructs when the boy’s father leaves the table, probably to use the bathroom. He uses a trick Y/N told him about, of being higher than your subject to show power. He crouches on the seat, taking the cherry from his sundae (he couldn’t help himself).
When Jug sits down at his booth again, he has precious intel. “You won’t believe it: Dilton fired the shot.”, he tells her, trying to figure out a way to get Dilton to confess to it. “I kinda do.” She makes a disgusted face.
Y/N invites him to watch a movie at her place to “celebrate” a job well done. He accepts with the condition of him picking the film, and they both laugh as she clearly pretends to take the offer back. Jug realizes he’s been laughing a lot more after meeting her – and over not so funny things. They settle on American Psycho and Y/N makes a bowl of pop corn each, as if she knows he will eat one all by himself. He soon finds out she does too. They make themselves comfortable on the soft couch full of fluffy pillows, and Jughead makes sure to sit as close to her as he can without making it obvious, mainly because it’s a large piece of furniture.
Jughead’s not one to be distracted during movies, being able to  marathon the extended trilogy of Lord of the Rings with only two  bathroom brakes, but somehow his eyes divert from the TV to the girl sitting next to him. He notices what color her nails are painted, the cute design on her socks, the size of her lips as she mouths the words from the movie. She lays down her head on his shoulder as the movie gets close to ending and he is intoxicated by the smell of chocolate and ginger once again. If he could he would freeze that moment.
Y/N’s point of view
Jughead tells her about the Blue and Gold. “That’s awesome, Jug.” Her face lights up. “You sure? We were doing this before.”, he asks and she can feel he doesn’t want that to come between them. “Unless this means you’re ditching me, it’s good. You can use the ‘I’m writing a story for the school paper’ to investigate without being suspicious.”, she says. He looks extremely appeased.
They spend the next couple of days thinking up a plan to get Dilton to confess of firing the gun on July 4th, in addition to enjoying time together. She’s thankful in a weird way about what happened, otherwise who knows how much time would pass without them knowing each other. They decide to apply some pressure on him at the Taste of Riverdale event by threatening him to tell Sheriff Keller. Jughead says he’ll talk to him alone, so she wouldn’t have to face him once more. Y/N likes the way it feels to be protected by the Jones boy.
She’s dressed a little fancier than usual, not too much that she stands out, but not too little that it’s eye-catching. Jughead clearly doesn’t follow the same line of thought as he sports his regular clothes and the beanie that makes him always stand out.  She unquestionably admires his confidence. They slouch at the balcony so they are barely visible, although having a full view of everything happening. They hear a whack and their eyes are directed towards Mrs. Blossom, who clearly has just slapped Mrs. Cooper, quickly walking away. “Ok, I’m gonna see what Alice got from her. You find Doiley.”, she has to speak right by his year as the Pussycats start playing. Maybe she didn’t HAVE to, but she clearly wanted to. “Alice?”, he asks just as close to her ear as she did before, speculating how she got on a first name basis without being friends with Betty. “I had an internship with the Coopers at the Register.”, she explains and walks out slowly, leaving Jug wondering what else he doesn’t know about her. Bummer is that Alice got slapped over asking for a quote she didn’t get. She hopes Juggie has more luck with Dilton.
She knocks at the Blue and Gold’s door. The previous night she got a text from Jug telling her to be there for Dilton’s confession. Y/N walks in shyly. “What’s she doing here?”, Betty asks confused as she was expecting Doiley. “Y/N and I have been investigating this before you asked me to write for the paper. She’s a part of this. You want me, you take us both.”, Jughead says defensively and Y/N blushes. Bets is reminded about the time Ronnie said that about her on the vixens team but before the blonde has a chance to reply, the culprit arrives and sits at the table in the center. They all gather around him. Now she’s sure Betty doesn’t mind her being with them, as there is strength in numbers.
The boy isn’t there to give them his story for the paper, but to negotiate. Something no one else knows about that day in exchange for his being forgotten. In different circumstances this would’ve never been accepted, but they are all grasping for information, so they take him up on his offer. Dilton tells them that on July 4th he saw a car by the river’s edge, Miss Grundy’s car. Everyone knows Archie was at Sweet Water River when he confessed earlier of hearing the same gunshot. Y/N looks at Jug in awe. “He probably knew about this and didn’t tell me.” She doesn’t even blame her new friend. After all, she didn’t tell him everything about Jason until she had to. She understands that if he did withhold that from her, it was to protect Arch. Although, from now on, nothing he does will shield him because Betty also heard the words the eldritch scout spoke and she seemed truly hurt by them.

“Jughead Jones?”
Jughead lifted his head and looked up to see a girl with blonde hair and green eyes smiling at him. He raised his eyebrows. “Yes?”
The girl boldly stuck out her hand. “Hi, I’m Betty Cooper. Welcome to Riverdale. I’ll be your guide for today,” she said. Jughead stood up and walked past her, ignoring her outstretched hand.
Betty awkwardly cleared her throat and put her hand down. She turned around to stand by Jughead’s side. “Firstly, I’ll be giving you a tour around the school. Follow me,” she said, beckoning the boy with a waving hand to follow her outside of the reception.
“And that’s about it for the tour,” Betty tells Jughead cheerfully, clapping her hands together. “Sorry if you found it rather boring. I could easily tell that you weren’t interested at all when I told you about the school’s architecture and history.”
“It’s fine,” Jughead said monotonously, stuffing his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. Betty smiled sheepishly at him and Jughead could feel heat rising up to his ears. He quickly looked away, avoiding her gaze.
She was pretty, Jughead thought, very pretty. He hasn’t even been in here to get enough time to look at the other girls but he knew he didn’t need to. Betty Cooper, the bubbly blonde girl he had just met an hour ago, was the only person he’d actually like to hang out with. Was she always so friendly with everybody? Jughead wondered. Or is it just that…
No. He shook his head. That would never happen. Somebody like her being interested in somebody like him? Jughead internally laughed at his own naivety. Go figure.
But none of that meant he wasn’t willing to try…
“Hey, um-”
“Betts!” a voice called from behind Jughead. Betty’s eyes lit up as she saw the person who had interrupted them and Jughead spun around to see a tall, well-built boy wearing a varsity football jacket.
“Chuck!” Betty exclaimed before she pecked the boy on the cheek and he returned the gesture of affection.
Oh god. Jughead wanted to face-palm himself a thousand times. Betty Cooper was not only a beautiful, kind and bright girl. But she was also very taken. By a jock. Jughead wondered if this guy also had a red Ferrari to go with his whole athlete image.
“Who’s this?” Chuck asked, motioning to Jughead.
“This is Jughead Jones. He’s the new transfer student from South Side High. I just finished giving him a tour around the school,” Betty replied. Chuck looked at him and nodded.
“It’s nice to meet you,” he said and leaned in, his face only inches away from Jughead’s. “I’ve heard stories of you South Side people, so I’m just going to say this to you once. Do anything to piss off or upset any of my friends, my boys and I will come to get you.”
Jughead was about to reply until Betty pulled Chuck back. “Geez, Chuck. Don’t scare the poor guy off,” she said, “Jughead deserves to be welcomed by everybody in Riverdale High and I’m sure he won’t be causing any trouble whatsoever.” She flashed a grin at Jughead and the boy quickly nodded in agreement.
“I know, baby, I know. I was just looking out for you,” Chuck cooed, a hand coming up to caress her cheek.
“Aww, Chuck.” Jughead was suddenly extremely uncomfortable. He cleared his throat and the couple turned to him. “I’ll be leaving you guys alone now,” he tells them, turning around. “I need to go find out where my locker is.”
Excuses, excuses. But at least they bought it.
“Oh alright then,” Betty called after him as he walked away, “I’ll see you around, Jughead!”
“Yup, I sure do hope so,” Jughead muttered under his breath as he turned the corner.
After lunch, Jughead headed towards his next class which was Science. He got in to find his classmates reunited in little groups in every corner of the room. As he strutted off to sit at a table at the very back, he noticed some people looking up to shoot some dirty looks at him. He sighed. Being born on the south side of the town sure had its perks.
“Alrighty, everyone! Glasses on, scalpels up, find a partner! Today, we’ll be dissecting so if you’ve got a weak heart then what on earth are you doing in this classroom,” the teacher said as soon as he got in and sets his briefcase on his desk.
“I’ll be with Reggie.”
“I wanna be with Betty.”
Jughead looked up when he heard that name and saw that, in front of him, just a couple of seats ahead sat Betty Cooper and a raven-haired girl. Betty turned around to look at Jughead with hesitation.
“Actually, V… I was wondering I could be with Jughead for today. You can be with Kevin.”
Her friend turned around to glance at Jughead and looked back at Betty with a small smile. “Okay, B. Whatever you want,” she replies and the blonde girl quickly thanks her and picks up her things before walking over to Jughead’s table.
“You don’t need to do all this. You know that, right?” Jughead says once Betty sits down beside him.
“Of course I know that,” she says, “But I don’t you to be all alone on your first day.”
“Oh so you’re saying it’s fine if I’m alone on every other day?”
“What? No! That wasn’t what-”
“I’m kidding,” Jughead told her with a mischievous smirk playing on his lips. Betty gave him a glare, trying to hide her smile but failed nonetheless.
“Let’s just start dissecting, alright?” she said before grabbing a pair of rubber gloves and passing them to Jughead.
Jughead put on the gloves and was about to pick up his scalpel before something caught his eye. He stared down at Betty’s hands as they were going in to grab another pair of gloves. There were small, red marks in a form of crescents engraved into the middle of her palms. Jughead leaned in a little bit. There were the same marks on her other hand.
Betty stared at him curiously. “What’s wrong?”
“What happened to your hands?” he asked, looking back and forth between her green eyes and her hands. Betty quickly took her hand off from where it was resting on the table.
“Nothing, they just got a little bruised from cheerleading practice,” she answered, avoiding eye contact as she pulled the rubber gloves on.
Jughead didn’t ask anything else about Betty’s hands. But he was more than sure that nobody’s hands could get injured like that from mere cheerleading practice.
But besides that, at least he learned more about Betty. She was beautiful, kind, bright, taken and a cheerleader. What has Jughead gotten himself into?
“You do cheerleading too?” he stated, putting on his safety glasses. “How perfect can you get…”
Beside him, Betty became eerily quiet which made Jughead look up, intrigued.
“I’m not perfect, Jughead,” she whispered as she looked down at the frog they had to dissect. She grabbed her scalpel and pointed it at the top of the frog’s stomach. “Actually, I am far, far from perfect.” Then she ripped the animal’s body open, teeth clenched and hand tightly gripping the scalpel.
That was when Jughead realized that maybe he didn’t know anything about Betty Cooper after all.
High ponytails. Loud music. Blue miniskirts. Jughead didn’t know what he was doing but there he was sitting on the bleachers. And there she was, dancing and carrying her team mates around on the field. She was smiling, despite the harsh demands and lectures erupting from a power-hungry red-headed girl who’s name was Cheryl Blossom, and Jughead found himself smiling as well. Compared to her mood and behavior from science class, Jughead was glad to see Betty enjoying herself.
And that was exactly the reason why he came to the practice in the first place. To apologize. And Jughead Jones never apologizes for anything. But he admits that he did feel bad and he probably said some things he shouldn’t have which hurt the feelings of the only person who actually tolerates his existence at this damn school.
The practice finally came to an end and Jughead waited until the group of chipper girls split from their final formation of their routine. He spotted Betty picking up her duffel bag and waterbottle before she began heading back to the school.
Jughead got up and jogged down the steps of the bleachers. “Betty!” he called but she didn’t hear him. He speed-walked over to where she was going. “Betty Cooper!” he said a bit louder, ignoring the looks that some of the cheerleaders gave him.
Betty turned to him, her ponytail whipping around as well. She softly smiled at him. “Jughead! Hey,” she said happily. “What are you doing here?”
“I, uh,” Jughead fumbled with the words that refused to roll smoothly off his tongue. “I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for upsetting you.”
Betty tilted her head to the side, confused.
“In science class.”
“Oh, right!” she said then chuckled, “It’s fine, Jughead. It was my fault I was being oversensitive.”
“No, no. You were fine. You were perfect- I mean, no, not perfect. Not as in you’re not perfect! You’re great! But, um, you know-” Jughead wanted to beat himself up for acting like such an idiot. He could feel his cheeks heat up in embarrassment.
Betty grinned at him, “I get it. And once again, it’s totally fine. You’re sweet for coming all the way here to apologize, even though you really don’t need to. Thank you, Jughead.”
“N-No problem…”
“Hey, some of my friends and I are going to Pop’s to hang out. Do you wanna come with?” Betty asked.
“Oh, no I don’t want to bother you guys and your friends will probably not even like me anyway. They might as well just ignore me the whole time,” Jughead paused and face-palmed himself. “Shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”
“It’s all good. And correct me if I’m wrong, but are you feeling like nobody’s gonna like you because of the way Chuck acted earlier?”
Jughead sighed. “No, but at the same time, yes. Is that bad?”
“Not at all! I’m sorry that he made you feel bad or left out. Chuck can get like that sometimes. He doesn’t mean it though,” Betty told him. “Plus, I know that you won’t do anything to hurt me or anybody else.”
“How come?” Jughead asked. Betty shrugged her shoulders.
“I can just tell. You’re… different,” the blonde girl says and Jughead can feel his heart skip a beat. They hold eye contact for a few seconds until she turns away, a guilty smile plastered on her face.
“Um, I’ve got to go,” she finally says, “But thank you again, Jughead.”
“No problem,” he quietly replies and Betty waves as she walks away and disappears into the building.
Jughead sharply inhales. He has officially fallen for Betty Cooper.
Betty’s least favorite time of her daily life isn’t going to school. It’s coming back home. But she has to do it and enter the same hellhole over and over again.
When Betty enters the house, she notices that the lights are off despite the darkness taking over the town for the night. With the taste of an old-fashioned vanilla milkshake on her tongue and her hair tied into a loose ponytail, Betty strolls through the corridor of the ground floor of her house and stops when she hears a pair of voices coming from the kitchen.
She quietly sighs, her eyes fluttering shut in exhaustion. Her parents are arguing again for god knows what reason, their voices getting higher and higher with every minute and Betty’s about to turn around and walk out that door when she hears a soft voice coming from the living room.
“Betty?”
Betty turns to her side to see her sister sitting on one of the couches, curled up in a ball. “Polly?”
“They’ve been fighting all day, and it’s making me sick,” her sister told her, running her hands through her long, blonde hair.
“Yeah, well, I’ve been in here for just two minutes and I’m already getting sick,” Betty replied. Polly chuckled but then her smile disappeared.
“I wish they could just stop and take a look at what they’re doing. Listen to what they’re saying.”
Betty sat down on the couch and gave her sister a hug. “Me too, Polly,” she said with a frown, “Me too.”
Then they just sat in silence, Polly’s head resting on Betty’s shoulder, their arms linked together. Because that’s all they could do. That’s all Betty could do. Just sit and wait. Just sit and wait and smile and be pretty and act ‘perfect’.
Betty woke up the next morning to a quiet room. A quiet house. A quiet neighborhood. Quiet and peaceful but also very eerie. She got out of bed and made her way downstairs. She found her father sitting at the kitchen table with his head in his hands.
“Dad,” she whispered and he looked up. “Where’s Mom?”
Her father sighed. “She left. She gathered her things, and she took Polly with her too,” he said and Betty could feel her heart pounding rapidly in her chest.
“Mom… left?” Her father nodded.
She dropped to the floor, a hand covering her mouth to block out the sobs threatening to escape her throat. Warm tears roll down her cheeks and she can feel her father’s hands rubbing her shoulders in comfort. He starts saying things but she can’t hear anything over the sound of her ears ringing, her heart breaking and everything in her life falling apart, besides the words, “It’s going to be okay.”
But Betty just cries even harder because she knows nothing is going to be okay. Not anymore.
Jughead hadn’t seen Betty on Tuesday. She didn’t show up to any of the classes they had together and he didn’t see her at her locker where she’d usually be at with all her friends. He was sitting in history class, at the back as always, his back pressed up against the chair and arms fallen to his sides when he heard Chuck talk to his friends about the beautiful blonde damsel-in-distress.
“So where’s Betty?”
“Yeah, man. I haven’t seen her all day.”
“Why? You guys worried about Chuck’s little dolly?”
“I don’t know where she is, guys. I guess she’s staying home for the day, she was probably exhausted from all the nailing we did last night.”
“Dude! Are you serious?”
“Of course I am.”
Jughead scrunched his nose up in disgust. He didn’t understand how Betty could have ever fallen in love with somebody as messed up as Chuck. He observed Chuck as he laughed with his friends and flirted with a couple of girls who came walking in the classroom. Jughead snorted. Just because he was a jock, it didn’t mean he was going to be loyal.
Jughead sighed as he let himself slide down his chair a bit. He hated this. He was stuck at school. He was starving. He was bored out of his mind. And the only person who he actually likes isn’t there. Great.
On Wednesday, Betty came to school and Jughead was thrilled to learn that she also had cheerleading practice after school. Most people would think of it as if Jughead only wanted to watch the practice to ogle at some preppy girls in uniforms but the sole reason he had went that day was for Betty. Sweet Betty. Beautiful, kind, bright, taken, a cheerleader and not perfect. But Jughead loved her anyway.
He watches her quietly from the bleachers and again, gets up and jogs down after the practice is over.
“Betty,” he says and the blonde girl turns around almost immediately.
“Oh, hey Jughead. What’s up?” she smiles at him but Jughead is quick to sense that something wasn’t right. He looks deep into her big, green eyes and notices that they don’t seem as happy as usual. He spots dark circles underneath her eyes and exhaustion is written all over her face and he knows he should probably just leave her be but he can’t help finishing what he started.
“Um, the local drive-in is shutting down soon and I was wondering if you’d like to come to closing night on Saturday,” he said, his fingers playing with the hem of his flannel shirt.
“Hmm, depends. What’s playing?”
“Rebel Without A Cause,” Jughead told her but the nervousness in his tone made it sound more like a question.
A huge grin appeared on Betty’s face. “I love that movie! I’ll definitely check if I can make it,” she says. “Oh, and is it okay if Chuck comes along too?”
“Oh yeah, of course he can.”
No, of course he can’t. Do you want me to get arrested for beating the shit out of somebody?
“Okay, great. I’ll see you around then,” Betty says and she walks off, leaving Jughead standing alone in the field with a smile on his face.
A phone gets picked up. A number is dialed. Fingernails are getting tapped against the cool surface of an old, wooden desk. Ring, ring, ring… No answer.
“BEEP.”
“Hey Polly, it’s me. Again. You haven’t been answering any of my calls or my text messages. I’m starting to get really worried… Are you okay? Is Mom okay? I asked Dad if he has any clue where you guys might be staying but he doesn’t know anything…”
Her breathing begins to hitch. A tear slips down her cheek.
“I’m worried sick, Polly. And I’m scared. I miss you and I miss Mom too and I just want you guys to come back home. We can all figure this out together. Dad hasn’t been much help… he’s pretty much heartbroken and I get that. It’s just I can’t-”
A sigh escapes her bruised lips.
“Look, just please call back. Or text me. Let’s meet up somewhere. I miss you both so much. Please come back.”
A call ends. A phone gets put down. And fingernails are slowly digging into Betty Cooper’s palms.
It’s Saturday night and the Twilight Drive-In is slowly getting filled up with cars of Jughead’s schoolmates. Not friends. Schoolmates. His real friends, from Southside High, are there though and as the movies starts up, Jughead leaves the booth and joins his friends. They’re sitting behind all the cars and the opening credits start up when Jughead spots a blonde beauty sitting in the back of a truck.
“I’ll be back,” he tells his friends and begins to head Betty’s way.
He gets to the truck and finds the girl alone, a blanket draped over her shoulders. “Hey, you came,” the dark-haired boy says and Betty turns to him and grins.
“Hey. And yeah I did. I realized that this would be the last time I’d be able to watch a movie at a drive-in,” she told him.
“Chuck’s not with you?”
“No,” she sighs, “He bailed on me last minute. Said he had to get ready for an upcoming football game. So I came with Kevin instead but he went to grab some popcorn for us.”
“Oh, alright then.”
“Do you want to sit?” Betty asks, scooting over to the side to make some space.
“I don’t want to bother you guys,” Jughead replies, scratching the back of his neck.
Betty rolled her eyes. “You won’t. Plus Kevin’s super friendly. He won’t bite.”
“I don’t know…”
“Please? Just sit with me for a little bit. I’m getting kinda lonely all on my own like this, after all,” she told him and he finally gives in, climbing up to sit down beside her and Betty pulls the blanket over Jughead so they could both be enveloped in the warmth of the soft, cozy fabric.
And for Jughead, that was enough.
Jughead would be lying if he said that he was expecting a call from Betty Cooper at seven o’clock on a Monday night. It seemed to good to be true, mainly because Betty had never texted or called Jughead before. Until now.
“Hello?”
“Jughead?” a soft voice uttered from the other end of the line.
“Yeah? Betty, are you alright?”
He could hear the blonde sniffle through the phone and let out a long sigh.
“I’m sorry if I’m bothering you. I just didn’t have anyone else to call…”
“It’s fine but Betty, is everything okay? Did something happen?”
“It’s Chuck. I’d explain now but… is it okay if you come over to Pop’s for a while?”
Jughead’s heart began beating rapidly against his rib cage. He balled his fists up as several thoughts about what Chuck could have done to Betty ran through his mind. “Yeah, of course I can. Just stay there, I’ll be there in five,” he told Betty and hangs up before grabbing his jacket and throwing it on.
“So um, here’s what happened: I was at Chuck’s house yesterday and everything was going just fine but then he started kissing me a-and touching me and when I told him to stop, he got mad at me and starting insulting me and h-he told me that he didn’t need me anyways because…”
“Because what, Betty?”
Betty narrowed her eyes at Jughead, a single tear sliding down her cheek.
“He was cheating on me with Cheryl. He was with her on the night of the drive-in. That was why he bailed on me and said he couldn’t make it,” she told him, then she lowered her gaze and Jughead watched as she clenched her fists tightly together. More tears began to roll down her face and her breath hitched.
“This keeps happening to me, Jughead. I’m never good enough. I always try to be perfect for everyone but… everything ends up falling apart and it’s always my fault. Chuck never loved me. He told me I was different from when we first started dating. He just used me and now he’s just throwing me away like I’m nothing. I can’t ever seem to keep people from leaving me. My mom and my sister left and I have no idea where the hell they are or if they are safe and now this thing with Chuck just-”
“Betty,” Jughead whispered and switched seats so he could be on the same side of the booth as Betty. He grabbed her hands and opened them up to see drops of blood tainting the skin of her palms. He hurriedly grabbed a napkin and began wiping away the blood.
He then looked up and his dark eyes met Betty’s bright ones. Bright but sad. It broke Jughead’s heart to see the blonde girl like this. Eyes, glassy and bloodshot. Face, wet with all the tears she’s shed in that booth. Hands, bloody and wounded. And lips, pale and bruised and Jughead just wants to kiss her then and there but tells himself to be patient and instead, he presses a soft kiss on the top of her head and holds her in his arms.
They stay like that for what seems like a century. And for Betty, that was enough.
When Betty got back home, she found her father in the living room.
“Your mother called me,” he tells her and her eyes light up.
“Really? What did she say? Is she and Polly alright?”
“They’re both fine, and they’re safe too. It’s just that…” her father trailed off.
“What?” Betty asked him and he sighed.
“Betty, your mother wants to get a divorce. She’s willing to be keeping Polly with her and leaving you here with me.”
“Oh my gosh,” Betty whispered and sat down beside her father on the couch. She stays quiet for a minute and blinks her tears back. “So they’re really not coming back?”
Her father shook his head and wraps his arm around her, pulling her into a what he had hoped would feel like a warm hug. But all Betty could feel was coldness taking over her now-broken heart.
“Hey Ronnie, wait up,” Betty called after her best friend. It was Friday and school had just finished when the blonde found the raven-haired girl in front of the school waiting for somebody.
“Betty, hey,” Veronica said, turning to look at her friend.
“You’ve been ignoring me all week,” Betty commented, “I was worried something was up.”
“What? No, B. Everything’s fine.”
“Oh okay. Are we still going to the mall then?”
“Actually… About that, Betty, I forgot I already promised Cheryl that we’ll go to the movies tonight. Sorry I didn’t tell you about it earlier.”
Betty stared at Veronica. “Cheryl? She invited you to the movies?”
“Yeah. Well, we’re actually going on a double-date. Me and Reggie with Cheryl and… Chuck.”
“Wow,” Betty breathed out. “Chuck’s going to be there?”
Veronica sighed. “Look Betts, I’m really sorry about what’s going on between you both and I know these last few days have been really tough on you but I agreed to go out with Cheryl and Chuck way before any of this mess happened.”
Betty shook her head. “No, it’s totally fine. I understand, V. Go have fun,” she smiled at the raven-haired girl.
Veronica returned the smile and hugged Betty before a red car stopped beside them. The pair turned to the person in the car.
“Hey Veronica,” Cheryl said. Chuck sat beside the red-head while Reggie sat in the back. Betty’s ex-boyfriend smirked smugly at the two girls and Betty clenched her teeth together as well as her fists in attempt to hold back whatever darkness was bubbling up in her body. “You coming?”
“Yeah,” Veronica said before taking one last look at Betty then jumped into the car. Then they drove off with Betty staring longingly after them.
It wasn’t until Jughead woke up from his evening nap on Saturday that he realized that Betty’s case was worse than he thought it was. He had opened his eyes and checked his phone to find several text messages and missed calls from Betty. He unlocked his device and scrolled through a few of the messages she had sent him. Some were from an hour ago, other were fifteen minutes ago. As Jughead read the messages from oldest to latest, he noticed that the urgency became more and more vivid with each text.
“Hey.”
“Juggie.”
“Jughead.”
“I hope you’re not ignoring me because you’re busy.”
“I’m sorry if I’m bothering you.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“Shit.”
“Juggie please answer me.”
“Please.”
“I don’t think I can take it anymore.”
“Every I touch gets ruined.”
“I’m a fuck up.”
“Maybe I should just leave.”
“My dad doesn’t know anything.”
“I love you, Jughead.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Goodbye.”
Jughead felt his heart drop as he read Betty’s messages. He dropped his phone and quickly got dressed. Then he picked his phone up and rushed out the door.
A million of thoughts run through his brain at the same time he ran over to Betty’s house. I’m so stupid, he thought to himself. He should have called her. He should have talked to her more at school. He should have checked if she was okay. After what happened at Pop’s, he had thought that everything was going to get better now. How could have he been so naive?
“Just wait, Juliet. Just hold on for a bit longer.”
Once he got to Betty’s house, he rang the doorbell as he tried to catch his breath. The door opened up to reveal Mr. Cooper. “Hi Jughead,” he said, “Came here to see Betty, I assume?”
“Yes, sir. Is that alright?”
“Of course,” Betty’s father said, moving aside to let Jughead in. “She’s upstairs.”
Jughead nods and jogs up the staircase. He feels like his lungs are on fire as he runs over to check in every single room Betty could be in. He opens her bedroom door. Empty.
“Crap,” he mutters under his breath and runs over to the bathroom. The door’s closed and locked from the inside. He knocks once. “Betty?”
He knocks twice. “Betty? I know you’re in there.”
He knocks thrice. “Betty, please. Let me in.”
Jughead presses his ear against the door and he could hear the water running from the other side. He uselessly attempts to shake and twist the doorknob open and finally decides that the only way he can get the door to open is to knock it down.
And when he finally does, he realizes that it’s too late. The shower tap is on, and the water’s falling down on Betty’s unconscious body. Her hair’s untied, her eyes are closed shut and her white t-shirt and black shorts are wet. Both of her wrists are slit open and the blood’s making the water in the tub slowly turn red and Jughead panics, feeling as if he might hurl any moment.
But he drops to his knees anyway and leans over to carry Betty out of the tub. His hands are painted red as he tries to stop her wrists from bleeding out. He calls for Mr. Cooper and when he comes and sees the scene. Though he is extremely overcome with shock and grief, he listens to Jughead’s instructions to call an ambulance.
While Mr. Cooper dials down the number with shaky hands, Jughead continues to hold Betty in his arms and he brings a hand up to wipe off the sweat from his face only to have it covered in blood as well.
But Jughead doesn’t care about the mess. He just cares about the girl he’s carrying in his arms. He just cares about how sad and lonely she must have felt and though the guilt is slowly eating him up from the inside, he stays on the bathroom floor and stares down at Betty, tears starting to well up in his eyes and they blur his vision and Jughead just brings Betty up to his chest and holds her tighter. Betty Cooper. Beautiful, kind, bright, no longer taken, a cheerleader, not perfect and broken.

LIKING FROM AFAR
Riverdale preference! Featuring, Archie, Betty, Cheryl, Jughead and Veronica! *I wrote a TW preference like this ** Also check this out :)
Tumblr media
CHERYL
You were lost in writing down your words you almost didn't hear the teacher call on you. “Y/n, can you read the answer for number four please?”
“J'ai lavé ma voiture la semaine dernière,” You spoke as you felt your classmates eyes on you. As you stared out the answer gracefully, students rolled their eyes, including Cheryl’s.
“Correct…” As the teacher went onto call out other students who didn’t look like they were paying attention, you went back to your poem.
French by no means was easy. And you didn’t understand why you were so good at it, why when you spoke the language, it rolled off your tongue easily.
Dear my beauty, I can’t help but admire You. Again.  I watch as you fiddle with your  Mars colored hair as you learn the grace Of this language. Oh mademoiselle I wish I could tell you in person how much beauty you carry
-Clément Marot
You looked over the poem you wrote for Cheryl in french. Clément Marot was her favorite french poet. At the beginning of the year when the teacher brought out his work she demanded that the class learn more about him because she loved his work.
Slipping the poem into her locker you listened to your best friend. “Are you ever going to tell her?” She asked you.
“Sure. I’ll just go up to her and say, ‘hi Cheryl, I’m Y/n the girl in your French class who spends her time writing poems to you because she’s too nervous to talk to you!” You told her. “In other words, no.”
Tumblr media
ARCHIE
“C’mon! You gotta do something about it! Riverdale needs a cliche couple and the football player and the cheerleader is the perfect one!” Betty joked, as Archie rolled his eyes at her.
“What’s up?” Veronica said, as she sat down at the lunch table with her friends.
“Archie has a huge crush on Y/n Y/l/n,” Betty teased.
“It’s not that big…” But who was he kidding? He kept all the locker signs you had made him for football, and he even considered you his lucky charm that helped him play good.
“Y/n the cheerleader right?” Veronica asked, and the two people nodded. “Isn’t she dating number 14?” Betty shot her friend a warning glare, hoping her friend wouldn’t ruin Archie’s mood due to the fact he was actually planning on asking the cheerleader out today.
“The co- Captain? Reggie’s right hand man? Because boy, with a man like Lahey I wouldn’t dare to touch his girl. He might rip you into shreds.” Archie said nothing, but kept his head down at Veronica’s words. “I mean, if I was built like a bull and I found out someone liked my partner and was going to do something about it, man, I’d break their face.”
And with that Archie out up, and sped to his locker. Practically ripping open the metal door, he grabbed the bouquet of flowers and slammed them into the trash.
“You okay nine?” Isaac, the owner of the jersey number fourteen asked as he saw Archie’s burst of anger.
“Perfect.”

VERONICA
“You can do this Y/n,” Your best friend Kevin shared, handing you the phone. “All you have to do is profess your love to her and she’ll do the same, and then you guys can get married and adopt kids!” He squealed happily. “But I get to pick out one of the kids’ names since (Your’s and Veronica’s ship name) happened because of me!”
Rolling your eyes, you dialed your crush's number while waiting nervously for her to pick up.
“Y/n? Whats up?”
“C-Can I ask you something? If - if that’s okay…”
You could hear her giggle through the end of the phone at your awkwardness. “Shoot.”
“Do you maybe- like,” You looked at your gay friend who just nodded his head in encouragement. “The color blue?” Your didn’t even wait for an answer as you ended the call, tossing your phone at Kevin, you threw yourself at the bed. Embarrassed that you couldn't do it.
“What happened?” He asked softly, before you made the call you and him had spent what felt like forever practicing what you were going to say to her.
“Kevin can I just be alone right now…” You whispered, as you felt tears reach your eyes.  “Please.”
Tumblr media
BETTY
I sit there at Pop’s, the only thing on my mind was going over what I heard. “Betty, you okay?” I hear Jughead ask me, and I silently nod my head yes.
“Betty Cooper?” Y/n asked, peeling off her shirt. “She’s okay I guess…” Betty tried not to overhear Y/n’s conversation with her best friend. But how couldn’t she? Y/n was her crush and it was the first time Betty ever heard Y/n talk to her - or even about her.
“But she’s not someone I would date. That Lodge girl she’s friends with, that's what I would call perfect girlfriend material.”
Maybe its because of the hair, she thought to herself. Y/n might like brown hair over blonde. I mean, for a while she was dating Allison who had brown hair.
“You sure?” Veronica asked.
“I said I was fine!” Betty told her, her tone angrier than needed. Betty apologized softly as Veronica stared at her with pressed lips.
It's because she’s rich with the perfect American dream life. I’m nothing put up against her.
Tumblr media
JUGHEAD
It was a night like no other, Jughead was on one side of your bed, while you were on the other. He was typing away as you were on your phone. Ever since you found out that he was homeless, you offered a place for him to stay, which he gladly accepted.
Turning off your phone and plugging it into the charger, “Jug we should go to bed. It's almost midnight.” You yawned, turning off the lamp that was on your bedside table.
You smiled softly as you felt Jughead join you under the covers. But this was different, he had his arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you closer to your best friend.
“Y/n can I tell you something?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper, the dark room making it harder to see one another.
This was both good and bad. Good because Jughead didn’t want the girl in his arms to see how nervous he was. Bed, she wanted to see is face to try and piece together what he was going to say.
You waited, but the silence of fear got to him. “A-actually can I show you?” And after the words ‘yes’ left your lips, Jughead kissed you. Putting his hands around her face as she kissed back, both were finally happy that they no longer had to live in fear that the other didn’t like them back. Finally.

Untitled 1
Chapter One “Go Dee, Go Dee, Go Dee” the crowd chants. David is on the basketball court shooting basket after basket, the crowd gets louder and in goes the ball right at the buzzer. “The Buckeye’s win the game” shouts the announcer and the crowd goes wild. Everybody is cheering and clapping with excitement. Michelle runs over and kisses David to congratulate him on his big win. “Excuse me are you David?” says a short heavy set man. “Yes I am” says David. My name is Mr. Scott and I’m a recruiter from Chicago State University and I was sent here specifically to check you out and I must say that I am amazed. “Thank you” say David. Here’s my business card, let’s keep in touch and I hope CSU is one of your college choices. “Yes it is and I will keep in touch” says David. Mr. Scott gives David a firm handshake and walks away into the crowd of people. With his arm around Michelle’s wrist David says to her “Let me grab my things from my locker and then we can go get something to eat”. “That sounds nice” says Michelle.  I’ll wait on you. David runs into the locker room he takes a quick shower, throws on some clean clothes, gets dressed then gives his team mates a high five and runs back out. “Are you ready” says David. “Yes I am and I starving where did you want to get something to eat at”, says Michelle. “How about we walk to Robin’s Kitchen?” says David. Robin’s Kitchen is a soul food restaurant. “That’s fine with me” says Michelle. As the two of them both leave the gym they both spot Robert and Kevin playing around in the hallway. “Aye, what’s up Dee? What’s up Michelle? Aye Dee that was a good game” says Kevin. “What’s up y'all” says Robert”. “Thanks man and where y'all headed to?” says David. “We ‘bout to head over Robert’s house to play the game.” says Kevin. “And where are y'all going?” “We’re about to walk and get something to eat” says Michelle. “Oh that’s good and we will see y'all at school tomorrow” says David. All four of them leave the school but walk in different directions. As David and Michelle walk, David puts his arm around Michelle neck. “Have you told anybody about the baby?” says David. “No not yet and I don’t think that I should tell anyone about this until you and I come up with a plan” says Michelle. “Yeah I think you’re right” says David. When the two of them get to the restaurant David opens the door for Michelle. Inside the restaurant the two of them pick a booth by the window in the corner. A waitress comes up with two menus in her hand and says “Hello I’m Janet, I’ll be your waitress for the evening, how was your day?” David and Michelle both answer together and say “Fine”. “That’s good and I’ll give y'all a minute to look at the menu” says Janet. A few minutes later Janet comes back over to the table and asks “Are you ready to order?”  “Yes, I’ll have the smothered pork chops, sweet potatoes and white rice with a medium fruit punch drink” say David. Janet says “Okay”, as she writes down David’s order then she looks at Michelle. “I’ll have baked chicken, sweet potatoes and turnip greens and for my drink I’ll have a glass of water. “Okay I’ll be right back with your orders” says Janet. “Do you want to keep the baby?” says David. “Yes I want to keep the baby but I also want to go to college.” says Michelle. “Maybe you can keep the baby and just go to school part time.” says David. “ I don’t know if I’ll be able to go to college part time and take care of a baby full time” says Michelle. “I’ll be there to help you” says David. “And what if we breakup?” says Michelle. “You don’t know that” says David. About fifteen minutes later Janet comes back over to the table with their food interrupting their conversation. Janet hands David his food, then hands Michelle hers then says “Let me go back and get your drinks”. Janet walks away quickly, heads into the kitchen, then seconds later she comes out with two drinks, brings them over to the table were David and Michelle are sitting and gives them their drinks then says “Enjoy your meal” and walks away to take care of other customers in the restaurant. Michelle and David both begin to eat their food. “So what other options are you thinking about?” says David. “Abortion was on my mind but I wasn’t quite sure about it, I have also been thinking about doing a open adoption” says Michelle. “I can’t see someone else taking care of my kid so I don’t agree with adoption nor abortion. Maybe we could try and get our own place and go to a community college part time” say David. Before Michelle answers him she takes a bite of her food and then takes a drink of her water. “What will we do for money? I don’t want to end up struggling trying to make ends meet” says Michelle. David takes a bite of his food and looks Michelle right in her eyes. “You’ve got a full scholarship coming your way to any college of your choice and I want to go to college to” says Michelle. “I’m starting to see why keeping the baby isn’t the best option so maybe adoption is the best choice but we still need to talk about this some more” says David. “Yes I agree with you” says Michelle. As David and Michelle both finish their food, David catches Janet attention so he could pay the bill. As David goes through his wallet to get money to pay the bill Michelle gets up and goes to the bathroom. While in the bathroom Michelle used the first stall then she washes her hands. But while washing her hands she takes a long look in the mirror, just for a few seconds she begins to look in the mirror and wonders what it would be like if she threw away her dreams to raise a baby. When Michelle comes out of the bathroom she walks back over to the table. She notices that David has paid the bill and he is ready to go. Michelle gets ready to go and then the two of them start walking toward the door. While walking home David grabs Michelle’s hand, they walk in the direction of Michelle’s home which is just blocks away. Michelle didn’t want to walk, so the two of them decided to wait for the #9  Ashland bus. While waiting on the bus David and Michelle stood at the bus stop hugging. Ten minutes later the bus arrives the two of them get on the bus pay their fare then find two seats together and sit down until the bus gets to their stop. About ten minutes later the bus reaches their stop. David and Michelle both get off the bus, they begin walking in the direction of Michelle’s house. When they get to Michelle’s house they see Michelle’s uncle Howard and stepfather Michael sitting on the porch, David kissed Michelle on her cheek then says “I’ll see you tomorrow in school” Michelle says “Okay” then walked toward the front door of her house while saying hello to her stepfather Michael and uncle Howard. Before David leaves he says “Hello Mr. Perez” he even speaks to Howard. The two of them take a minute, then respond. Michael says “Hello son how are you?” David responds by saying I’m fine and I’ll see you again. David turns and begins walking home. He lives four blocks from Michelle’s house. As David walked in the house all he could hear was, 5,6,5,6,7,8. It was Tiffany, David’s younger sister who was in her room practicing dance moves so that she can show them off to the head cheerleader at school. While practicing her dance moves, Tiffany listened to R&B singer Beyoncé song, Upgrade U, as she danced around her bedroom. “What are you doing? Because I know you ain’t trying to dance, could you please turn down your radio?” says David. “Well first of all this is not your house, second I’m working on my moves so I can show them off to my squad and third I will turn down my music, but I’ll turn it off when I’m ready.” says Tiffany. David looked Tiffany up and down and says “That ain’t your squad you should be happy just to be on the team and as long as Kelly is captain you’ll be doing her dance moves and ONLY her moves”. Tiffany looks at David and rolls her eyes then run and slams her bedroom door with him standing in front of it. David turns and walks towards his room. David enters his bedroom, kicks off his gym shoes, throws his gym bag in his closet. He plops down on his bed with the TV remote control in his hand. As David is flipping through the TV channels nothing interest him so he turns on his laptop to check his Facebook page. As David begun checking his Facebook page he reads Michelle’s latest status update which read: I’m so confused right now, what should I do?. David sends her a message so nobody else can’t see what he’s about to say. He writes: Have you told anyone in your family that you’re pregnant? A few minutes later Michelle replies back saying “Since I’m not sure yet, the answer is No” Seconds later David replies saying: “How about we think about adoption. I’ve been thinking about it ever since you brought it up when we were eating.” Michelle sends a message back saying “That sounds alright maybe we should find an adoption counselor for some guidance, I’m logging off now I’ll see you tomorrow in school.” David sends her his last message that said “ I love you : ) then he logs off. After David logs off he turns off his laptop then lay in his bed until he fell asleep. Even though Michelle agreed with David to talk to an adoption counselor she has thoughts of going through her head about abortion even though she told David that she wouldn’t be able to go through with it. While lying in the bed her stomach starts to feel upset she quickly gets up runs to the bathroom then she threw up she brushes her teeth to get that bad taste out of her mouth. She comes out the bathroom, crawls back in bed and lays there until she falls asleep.
