Hi. Random question- is Maureen based off of Jocelyn Wildenstein- the Cat Woman? Married to a man who loves cats? Surgeries to look like a cat? Have they stated this in the show and I’ve just not realised?

Book Review: House of Beating Wings (The Kingdom of Crows #1) by Olivia Wildenstein
Tumblr media
A friend bought me this for my birthday and I think those who gravitate toward fantasies with a prophecy-like quest or odyssey at its epicenter will find much to enjoy from it. There's a Celtic folkore influence as well, with a lovely mix of human, faerie, halfling, and shapeshifter creatures to round it out.
Fallon, the heroine, has the awareness of rock, so prepare yourself to be frustrated by her. She's young for her kind, so I think that excuses some of her immaturity and selfishness. She does grow on you, but watching her willfully misinterpret Bronwen's prophecy, which she immediately attaches to Dante, the faerie prince she's loved (idealized) since childhood, has you wanting to facepalm and slap her simultaneously. Let's just say there isn't a red flag in sight she doesn't blow past on her journey to free a magically-bound crow king.
That said, the magic and mythology in this book was rich, immersive, and unique, and I liked how it was weaved intricately into the politics of the world. I also loved the concept of shapeshifting here, with the hero in multi-crow form for most of the story. I was not expecting to be won over by a mind-speaking bird king, but well, here I am. Go on and speak crow to me, Lorcan!
3.5/5 stars

Book Review - House of Pounding Hearts
Highly recommend series - 4 Stars out of 5
The story picks up in the Sky Kingdom, where Fallon Rossi is kept safe after resurrecting the crow king, Lorcan. She learns more of the prophecy for the Crows and her true origins.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The main character’s (Fallon Rossi) personality seems to drastically change from the first book. Her thought process was frustrating to read throughout the story. This story was supposed to build upon their connection introduced in the first installment. Fallon rejects her mate and becomes upset with the notion of him moving on with someone else. The mating ritual of the Crows removes a person’s free will to choose their romantic partner, which explains Lorcan’s objectification of the protagonist. The king views Fallon as his property rather than her own independent being, making it hard to root for them.
As for the writing style, the author’s vocabulary is strong and doesn’t waste time on long-winded descriptions. For example, Olivia is able to paint a fascinating world without boring readers with unnecessary details. She’s great with pacing the world-building information consistently without overwhelming them with it. Additionally, this technique allows you to truly think about the series even after putting it down for the day.
Overall, the war brewing between mythical creatures remains captivating for its readers and creates anticipation for them to see it unfold. As for the amorous pairing, hopefully Lore’s perception of soulmates will change later in the series. The domineering alpha male who wants all control and masking him as “protective” is a common trope in fantasy romance novels, which some may view as problematic.

“Little bird, from this point forward, the only lap,or hand or face, you will be riding are mine. Is that clear?”
My cheeks burn just as ardently as my sex at the mention of his face.
“Yes, my face.”
His fingers crush my skin—in the best way—as he grinds me against him.
“My nose. My tongue.”
I sputter as he uses said tongue to lick a line from my clavicle to my chin.
