Life Event

Mac’s July Challenge

It is amazing how one small act, incident, or event can change the tide of an entire story. These can be good or bad things as we read. A catastrophe, meeting a soul mate, losing someone, having a child. There are so many things that our muses experience that shape the very fabric of their being. Today’s challenge will touch on that. How one thing, big or small, has impacted them. Now, we’ve already talked origin stories, the beginning of your muse. Today we talk about another life-altering incident.

Describe what you consider the most important event of your Muse’s life so far. 

“Ya can’t be much older than I am.”

Mac laughed softly at the comment. Her youthful appearance fooled so many. Even her sometimes when she looked in the mirror. Frozen in time, unable to grow old. It was both a blessing and a curse. She usually hid her strange longevity, no good usually came from telling people her true age. However, as she sat there with Mister Belmont watching the Deeprun Tram come and go, for some reason she didn’t feel the need to hide it from him.

“I’ll be 83 this December.”

As predicted, the usual look and questions followed. He was kind, his rough voice laced only with innocent curiosity and not judgment. The how behind the trick. Mac only wished it was a trick. Some simple thing she could simply stop as she wished. Instead, she explained the truth behind it.

“I nearly lost my son when he was young. I didn’t have the power to save him and I couldn’t bear to lose my child. I turned to those that did, higher powers with the ability to save him… for a price. He was spared, saved by the wild magic coursing deep in the earth. A life saved, a life owed. Ironic part is, I couldn’t lose him there, but the price I paid… He will grow old and eventually die. I will not. In the end, I will still lose him like I would have then.”

Mister Belmont nodded, his following question a simple one. “Does ‘e know what ya did?”

Mac nodded. “He knows, yes. We’re estranged now. It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken to him but he knows…”

                                                 OOC Notes

Though most don’t know it, Mac is actually a Gilnean Witch of the Old Ways. In this slightly obscure version of Lore, it hints that Gilnean “druids” had limited control of natural magic and much like the primitive tribes of early humanity, they worship the wild gods.

Utilizing this lore, Mac wasn’t able to save her son. Her magic being limited, she didn’t possess the necessary strength to heal him. I am a firm believer that when it comes to magic beyond what one possesses, and with gods in play, that there should always be a price.

In this instance, the cost was longevity. Many would see this as a blessing, however, as the years march on, Mac remains frozen at the same age from the day she saved her son. She was unwilling to part with him when death was there with a sharp knife, threatening her son with a short life.

Because of her inability to accept that all things must die and that it was her son’s time, the gods collected her debt owed with a cruel irony. Mac would remain young while all those she truly cared about aged with the march time. Her children, friends, and family would wither with age and eventually die, one by one.

The reason this event is so important to Mac is because it came with lessons that shaped her into the person she is today. For one, Mac is very guarded due to the fact that she has watched so many loved ones pass from this world. She fears getting close to another because she knows one day she will mourn them.

It also gave her a new respect for her gifts. Before, she always took her magic for granted, especially her ability to connect with something greater and perform rituals and spells that were far beyond her own natural abilities. Now, she understands the dangers and the price that comes with tapping into wild powers. She was desperate to save her child and leapt before she looked. While she doesn’t regret her choice in the slightest, she knows the price she paid was a sacrifice not many would be able to accept.

Now, Mac serves as not only someone who can help the desperate who are looking for a miracle, she also uses her story as a warning to the rare few who find themselves at her door, seeking help for something dire. She reminds them that interfering with the natural course of things often has unexpected consequences and sometimes the price that must be paid is too great.

Interview with a Wolfram.

The Brawler’s Guild tonight was packed, and louder than usual. It didn’t intimidate Rae as she ordered her usual from the bar. The crowd around the ring was thick, almost impossible for her to get through. “Oi! Outta me way ye mongrels.” A few looked at her sideways, but no one ever snapped back at her. Her reputation in these parts had grown quickly due to the last… intrication. That bloke would never live a day to fight again. 

Inside the brawl pit was one of the only two contestants Rae had not beaten yet. As he left victorious, her other opponent entered. They were her enemies, but she admired their dedication to such an art. They were lithe, and quick, like a snake. If you took your eyes off of them for but a moment, you were dead. No mercy existed in their souls.

With a deep sigh, Rae pushed herself out of the crowd and began walking to a table in the corner. As she passed by a woman, she was stopped. “Oi, come here for a second.” Rae slowly turned her head towards her, a hand immediately going to her sheathed dagger. After a moment, she obeyed and took the seat across from the lass. “What is it ye want?”

“My name is Daria. I’ve seen you fight here before. You’re very good. I wanted to offer you a better place for your skills other than this place. I bet I can pay you twice as much as what you get here.”

Rae chuckled at the offer, her head moving back and forth, causing her braids to swing. “Lass, I’ve gotten meself plenty of offers, and I do nae care aboot nae gold or fame. I’m just here to have some fun and let the crazy oot. Why woold I go with ye, when I will nae go with nobody else?” As she waited for an answer, her eyes, nearly hidden from her hood, would scan over her in an attempt to seek out any weakness, or hidden meanings.

Ever the clever pupper, the lady, Daria, gave nothing away save her eerily placed smile. "Because you'll be working alongside me, love. Rather - you'll be working for me. I don't have much to offer you in terms of now, save protection from the guard and a fat little sack of gold, but should you decide to come under my employment... Things only go up from there." She looked up to the pit as a loud screech tore out; more than likely another victim falling. Her mismatched eyes slid back to the dwarf with a predatory grace, seeking out any weaknesses in her as she tried to do to the Gilnean. "This is what you want your life to be? Getting paid... Mm. I would suppose less than the amount in my coin pouch... a month. I offer more than scraped knuckles and bloodied noses. I offer you free drinks, constant gold and a chance for an adventure every now and then. If only you accept my offer." Her other hand came up, folding neatly with it's mate on the table. "The choice is yours."

Rae appeared distant the whole explanation until the word 'adventure' popped out of Daria's mouth. Her attention quickly snapped to the woman, eyeing her over once more before submitting. "A'right. I'll see what yer lots got." Rae leaned back in her chair as if to appear complacent, and relaxed,  hand reaching up to pet the illidari bird atop her head..

Seeming a bit stunned that she had automatically agreed, Daria blinked once and opened her mouth. "Right then. Let's get down to the bloody bits, shall we? My company is Wolfram Enterprise. We buy and sell rare goods, and invest in businesses who might need a little help with the books. That's a front for our underbelly, of course, but I'll need you to promise me your word if I am to continue speaking about it."

Rae slowly closed her eyes, and scratched underneath her hood before lazily looking back at the Gilnean. "I'm rather surprised. What ensures I keep my word?"

Daria grinned then - an insidious smile that showed double rows of pristine teeth. "It's either that or death, lovey. Speak about my organization to any other than those you work with and I will have your head. With or without your permission."

The Dwarf nodded in approval, not buying it of course, it was the usual that was given, but the woman had tried to threaten her. She would play the game. Playing the act, she rounded her eyes and put a hand to her throat, faking fear. "Och! A'right then, sure. I swear on me pretty little head that I will nae tell a sool."

Raising a brow at her exaggeration, Daria continued. "Mm. We run a criminal organization with several sects from killing to stealing. We run on contract and you do as I say with no questions asked. Agreeable so far?"

Rae pursed her lips at the last portion. "What if I have a question that's reasonable, can I ask it? I like to ask questions.”

"Ask it then, I have no qualms. You are not employed yet; we are still equals here." Daria waited patiently, ever attentive to the dwarf.

Rae shook her head. "Nae lassie, I meant when I am. Ye say no questions, but that's who I am. I ask questions. Ye want the job done right, imma ask questions."

"Acceptable. But when given a command in times of need, you listen to it and do as I say. Results can be... painful. If you don't." Daria paused for a breath, her nose wrinkling as a hand dropped beneath the table to rub her stomach. "Apologies for that, but moving forward... I need your name, occupation, and previous employers.

Rae blinked, not saying anything for a moment. "Me name is Rae. That's all."

"The rest is required, and will not be used against you. If only for personal reference, I must know."

This time, the dwarf snickered in amusement. "That is everything. I am nae jokin' lassie."

Daria furrowed her brows, but didn't push it further. She could find out more if she wished. "Any prior experience with the guard? No arrests, I assume?"

Rae shakes her head. "Nae a thing."

"The final is a bit hard to swallow, but I assure you, it necessary for you to answer. Are you willing to lay down your life for me should a situation arise?" Daria leaned over the table then, keenly observing the woman's reaction to the statement.

Rae simply lofted a brow, and took a moment before leaning over the table as well, her face inches from Daria's "Let me be clear on this, lass. You may be the boss, but when it gets down to the nit and gritty, we're all equals here. I'd lay me life doon for someone only if they be willing to do the same. So, ma'am, " she said the last word as if it were poison on her tongue. "woold ye do the same?"

"Never have I had an answer as such." Daria murmured, not daring to pull back. It was the truth, as much as she could convey in the statement. "More than likely, I would not. I am a mother, and I am with child. Though I can tell you there are plenty more others who would stand at the end of a blade to protect their comrade. The question was such to determine how I will be able to put up with you, and I truly think you and I will get along well." Daria leaned back only then, a hand fishing in the leather pouch at her side. She came up with a small black device, no bigger than half a cork. She extended it out to the dwarf, beginning the explanation. "This is our communication device. Should you need to reach us, press this button." She pointed to a small indent on the side. "It should remain on so that I can reach you. You may pin it to your collar or rest it in your ear. And yes... Gnomish technology is waterproof now."

As Daria handed her the device, she sat back, accepting the answer for she would have given the same. "Right then. Are we done here...? I never caught your name me thinks."

Daria rose from the chair, extending her hand again. This time, in greeting. "Daria Belmont, love. Welcome to Wolfram."

Rae walked around the table, reaching her wee little arm up to give a good sturdy handshake. "Aye, thank ye. I better be gettin' that adventure you promised."

"Trust me love," Daria winked at Rae, stepping around the table. "You will. Now if you don't mind me, it's rather late, and I have a son to beat if he's not asleep. A pleasure meeting you, little Rae."

Rae nods in understanding. "Aye. Take it easy then." The little Dwarf waddles off, ready for some more face pounding in the pit.

16. Favourite trope?

I don't like cliches of the literature. I prefer to break this because for me, use a plan already know by the lector, they know the end. But i love some duo-type, as the monster and the innocent soul or the protector giant guy and the fragile small person. But not as the Best and the Beauty, more as the big protector and the small angel.

This duo-type are more interesting when the appearance who this giant are grotesque, monstrous or as a nightmare-live. And also, when it's not a paternal or a big-brother figure, but a big sister or a mother figure, or a big lover...

And for this small angel who he protects, when he is not an innocent soul, but just a dangerous and monstruous thing with a human appearance.

Example : Elias and Chisé in The Ancient Magnis Bride, Anderson with babies heinkel, yumi and Maxwell or with other children, Wolfram and Sieglinde In Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji... Etc.

21. Are there certain characters that you gravitate towards?

Zorin is probably the character who asked me if I really loved the women ^^'

But the love and me it's complicated but Zorin is always the character who i love the more since many years now.

23.Do you ever get jealous when rping? How do you handle this?

I'm sometime jealous in the english rp because the person speak and write better this language that me.

Or jealous because the person have a better narrative style of me.

But, when i'm jealous, i continue the Rp because it's not a wrath into the person, just the envy and the desire to the same talent.

So, i try to do better with my own work.

VALENTINE.   how does your muse feel about valentine’s day?

well, considering valeriu has only been exposed to the concept via humans, he doesn't really know much about it nor really understand many of the traditions behind it. if the dokkalfar were to have a 'v-day' holiday of their own it would be in the late summer/early autumn when they are at the height of their mating season. this time of year, dokkalfar arent nearly as interested in such things as they would be during the other half of the year. however valeriu is very much a hopeless romantic, and will take the opportunity to both receive attention and affection, and give it, for no reason at all besides being prompted by a specific day. he also is a fan of having an excuse to buy himself and others things like flowers, jewelry, wine, stuffed animals, candy and chocolate -- the works. also, he totally takes advantage of the fact that its often called v-day, which im sure he will call vali-day. its give-vali-affection-day.

AFFECTION. how does your muse show affection?

vali's main love language is physical touch. but also gift giving and words of affirmation. the main way he expresses his interest and love for someone is with simple touch, whether its slipping his hand into his lover's hand, sneaking a kiss, cuddling up against them, leaning against them, just in general wanting to be in close proximity to them as often as he can.

when it comes to gift giving -- vali has a lot of resources to give lots of gifts to the ones he cares about, being the resident rich fuck. in order to make his gifts feel more meaningful and less like hes just throwing money at someone to gain affection, he usually opts for personalized gifts. he knows the language of flowers, any flowers he gifts to his lovers will have a specialized meaning. as well as semi-precious and precious stones whose meaning either corresponds to their birth-stone or has some sort of meaning behind it.

he will gift books from his personal library, which is a very big display of him liking someone, as he is often reluctant to give up any of his hard earned collection of books. and other gifts he may make himself -- like drawings, or handmade jewelry, or things he found/collected out in nature.

LOVE.   who does your muse love?

vali wants to love many, he has the capability to love many, but ultimately he only gives his heart to a select few. hes got a lot of love to give however. he loves his mate batu-sahar, he loves his daughter amira, he loves his personal guard and lover faelon. he has a wide selection of suitors vying for his attention and affection, usually for political advancement and the power that would come with being the archmage's lover, but vali ultimately tries to keep his inner circle small -- for a dokkalfar noble, anyway. hes has plenty of casual lovers and friends with benefits, but those he has truly given his love are a special few.

when it comes to rp verses within their respective universes, he has given (or is trying to anyway) a piece of his heart and affection to @vampiric-bite (reistr) @aufhcker (apsel)@dirthara-an (dirthamen) @xxvernalagniaxx (vesna) @gossamerashes (wolfram) @bransles (octavo) @redridcr (eimaan and red) @blxsscd-x-fxrsakcn (gabriel) and a few others that are only occurring off tumblr/in discord--

I LOVE YOU.   does your muse find ‘i love you’ easy or hard to say?

very hard. especially the first few times it occurs and there is this pressure to say it back. a phrase like 'i love you' is very powerful, words and oaths and phrases were powerful among the very literal fae. to say i love you is not something he wants to take lightly. hes experienced it plenty of times where people have said it and not meant it, either because they were leading vali on or were simply ignorant to the fact that what they thought was love, was actually a deep infatuation with the image of valeriu, rather than who he truly is. this is to say vali has been hurt before by superfluous use of the phrase 'i love you', has been hurt before many times by giving over his heart too quickly just because someone said the right things that vali wanted to hear.

or they said i love you, meant it, but ultimately because of either their mortality or their involvement in high politics, ended up dying or being pulled from his life permanently in some way. that hurts a lot more in vali's eyes than someone being mistaken or lying about their love. the conflict between not wanting to get attached to avoid hurt, and wanting to make the best of the relationship anyway because it is a fleeting thing.

its a good thing to remember that while vali is long lived and has lived for a while, he is still in the brain development phases of a young adult going into a full grown adult, and he has experienced a lot of trauma in those centuries hes been alive. so his emotional responses, the way he deals with relationships and reacts to social hurt, how he seeks out and what he expects of relationships, are very much that of a young person still figuring out themselves and what they need in a relationship, and someone who has been traumatized by personal relationships gone awry in many ways, teaching valeriu not so healthy assumptions about how romantic relationships work.

so, yes, he does find it a bit difficult to say i love you, and finds it difficult to hear i love you as well. but its only because he knows what is at stake when one says such things. he wants to truly mean it. so when he does say i love you, oh god does he mean it with every fiber of his being.

The Circus Arc

Last week somebody asked me what my favourite manga arc is, and without a second of hesitation I answered 🎪. As I have already publically declared my love, it is only natural for me to write a love letter to the Circus Arc.

Why do I consider the Circus Arc the best still after more than a decade?

I. The true story

First of all, the Circus Arc is in my opinion the first arc wherein we truly get to meet the characters, as well as the series itself.

A protagonist who is dispensable in their own story is not a true protagonist. As touched upon in this post, before the Circus Arc O!Ciel was actually little more than a plot device to show off Sebastian’s many assets. “The Watchdog has a case because the Queen said so, Sebastian solves it.” “The Watchdog was kidnapped because Yana TOLD us he made life for the mafia a bit hard, so Sebastian saves him.” When Sebas said to his master “you truly have no other talent except for getting yourself abducted,” it sure rang very true until that point. It wasn’t as much a story of O!Ciel’s revenge as it was Sebas saving the day because: demon powers.

In the Circus Arc however, we truly got an insight on why this little boy could indeed have made life for the mafia hard, and why after two years the Queen still hasn’t fired him. As discussed in the post mentioned before, almost as a compensation for his prior starfishhood, O!Ciel had insisted on doing the investigation himself, even at the cost of his own health. We saw him actively cooking up strategies as well as dealing with any situation as they were met. O!Ciel really displayed a commendable aptness at playing the cards he has been dealt in the Circus Arc. In contrast, while Sebas did make many accomplishments, all his actions were the undertaken because of O!Ciel’s orders. In the Circus Arc we truly got to see how the boy is the chess player, and demon the black knight.

II. Our protagonists - into the core

The Circus Arc is likewise the arc wherein we actually get to meet our two main characters outside their token function.

We have seen Sebastian’s establishment as “the pawn that can move across the entire chessboard in one single move”. But without O!Ciel’s input or any price that the master would have to pay, Sebastian is easily just an ‘instant-win card’, an ironic “deus” ex machina, if you will.

As discussed in this post and this post, in the Jack the Ripper Arc Sebastian was quite dissatisfied with his master and therefore decided to teach his master a lesson at the cost of more innocent lives. However nasty, it had been O!Ciel who ordered for a subpar move, and technically the pawn “did nothing wrong.”

In the Circus Arc O!Ciel became meticulous about decisions regarding his chess piece. Principally there was nothing wrong with the order O!Ciel had given his butler about releasing the snakes before the first stringers would return, and Sebas who was bound to perfect completion of any order also didn’t do anything wrong, technically. However, it had already been established that as long as Sebas sees the interest himself he would find any loophole in orders to still benefit his master in one way or another. As it is, considering how Sebas did decide to release the poisonous snakes while his master was in the danger zone, we are left with a chilling conclusion that Sebas simply ‘did not see the interest’ of shielding O!Ciel from danger. For the first time we truly learn the extent of Sebastian’s nondiscriminatory nastiness; how indeed all humans are the same to him. For the first time we truly understand that O!Ciel is paying with much more than his soul for Sebastian’s services. This demon is a double-edged sword, but much more than swinging outwards, this sword has a tendency to swing inwards the moment the wielder allows for any opening.

Previously discussed in this post, we also see the full extent of Sebastian’s manipulativeness and toxicity in the Circus Arc. Sure, in other arcs Sebas is also manipulative, but all of those actions could still be categorised under “merciless honesty”. In the Circus Arc however, O!Ciel objectively did nothing wrong to be triggered and exhausted from the Circus shenanigans, and yet Sebas was unnecessarily re-triggering and victim shaming his master for some extra “flavouring”. If there had been any doubt whether Sebas is bad for O!Ciel, then surely the Circus Arc put all doubts to rest.

For the first time in the manga we also see a genuine obstacle for Sebastian that is for not also the final hurdle to overcome, like in the Ripper, Curry, Campania or any other arc really. In the Manor Murder and Werewolf Arc there were of course Earl Grey and Wolfram respectively, but in those cases Sebas mostly tried to outrun the obstacles. In the Circus Arc however, William is likewise a supernatural being, and Sebas knew very well that he can’t just neutralise William without causing more trouble than good. Hence we saw how Sebas tried to negotiate with William, and we learned that even Sebastian cannot just avoid hurdles. Negotiating with William did not work of course, so the story forced Sebas to be creative. It truly was great to see Sebas use his brain rather than demon-muscles to overcome a problem for a change.

While getting “creative”, Sebas displayed his aptitude for preying on humans in our weakest of moments. As explained in this characterisation of Sebastian, Sebastian is not terrifying because he has super powers, but because he understands human weaknesses like no other and uses our own weaknesses against us. In this same arc we likewise truly understand the looming threat O!Ciel is dealing with, an explicit revelation of the monster Sebastian is. This scene from underneath is the most explicit moment telling us that Sebas is not just dwelling on Earth comfortably; he is holding out under a cover. This scene almost served as an alarming reminder to us: “beware, the demon can snap”.

What about O!Ciel? In our boy we saw his tremendous dedication to his job. Except for purposes directly related to the investigation, never once did he order Sebastian to make life easier for him. He never made Sebas secure food for him or do any of the chores for him. Surely Earl Phantomhive would consider himself above wrestling for food or scrub some floors, and yet he was willing to just take on any task without complaining. In no other arc do we see just how effective O!Ciel is as the Watchdog exactly because he is so versatile both in playing the ‘cute little boy’ card as well as the ‘feared Watchdog’ card.

Doll was an exceptionally well chosen “obstacle” for O!Ciel (more about her later). When Doll briefly wondered about why a peasant boy like Smile would speak in flawless RP, we saw O!Ciel’s ability of thinking on his feet, giving a very logical explanation of: “I served in a Lord’s household where I learned to speak proper.” When Doll caught him red handed when he sneaked into Snake’s tent O!Ciel also immediately pulled the “I didn’t steal anything!” card, skillfully tying it into his previous story as ‘the page boy who was fired for stealing’. We learned that the Watchdog really is willing to carry out his job through any means necessary, not just ‘the cool and edgy means’.

One of the best ways to get to learn a person is judging from their gut reactions. When O!Ciel was triggered in the final showdown he no longer had any energy to put on a strong front or think about matters rationally. He was in emotional pain and his gut reaction was to want that pain gone.

Even Sebastian who would not directly benefit from the case being completed advised his master against burning down everything. Even with the Queen’s commission as leverage however, the boy still yelled to have everything reduced to ashes. In this moment we also understood just how traumatising everything was to O!Ciel personally. This trauma response didn’t come from nowhere; everything that happened up until that point had been a logical build-up towards this inevitable result.

III. The Side Characters

A story cannot be told with just the main characters; you need to care about the interactions they have with others too. In my opinion the Circus Arc has delivered the most memorable side characters that linger with us even after death. In particular Joker and Doll.

Joker is a very fun, charismatic character as well as a person with many different sides. He is lawfully inexcusable, but we cannot help but sympathise, or at least understand how he too is a victim compelled into evil. Rationally we reject Joker’s actions, but partially it is because we have the luxury to do so. “Is this self defense? Would we, or how would we have done anything differently had we been in his exact shoes?” is a question worth considering.

Doll too; we see a child who lived a relatively happy life in the recent past. In the anime they made it explicit that Doll was complicit in all the kidnappings of the children, but in the manga it is more ambiguous whether Doll is fully aware of Kelvin’s agenda. This gives the effect that with the revelation of Joker always having taken most of the bullets, we understand that the torment Joker has been suffering was the price he paid to buy his siblings a more-or-less normal life. If O!Ciel sold his soul to the devil in the literate sense, Joker did so in the figurative sense in exchange for his family’s happiness.

IV. The Antagonists?

We do not spend too much time with Baron Kelvin, and he is a relatively simple character. But that is not bad as long as the villain’s threat reaches us. The horrors of Kelvin have always been quite clear; when children are harmed it triggers a gut reaction of disgust in most viewers. But the kidnapped children were not the functional victims in this story, it is the first stringers with Joker in the centre.

Kelvin has made a bunch of crippled children fully dependent on him, and used their own dependency as a currency to satisfy his own greed. Never once did he allow these children to forget how he could easily return them to the gutter from where he collected them. The kidnapped children were just numbers in the newspaper, but the first stringers are characters we spent time with. We have seen their suffering and we know they are just trying to get by. So it is all the more heartbreaking that children who merely wanted their basic human rights were turned into the antagonists that had to be exterminated. In the showdown between Joker vs Watchdog, the dynamic is shifted from “heroes vs child-kidnapping villains” to “villain-protagonists vs anti-villains”.

The Circus Arc is very special in how the villain impacts the readers, because the people affected matter to us. In the earliest arcs we didn’t REALLY care about O!Ciel, but he was the main person who suffered from the villains. With Sebastian around however, we don’t really worry. In the Ripper, Mansion, Campania and Potter Arc the main victims are characters we don’t spend any time with, so emotionally we don’t really care whether “evil gets vanquished”. In the Werewolf Arc we do have Sieglinde and Wolfram, and it is heartbreaking to see Sieglinde discovering that all her happiness had been a big lie and that to even her own mother she was nothing but a tool. But in the very least she did grow up happily, she survived and has a fresh chance to start a new life, and the person closest to her (Wolfram) is still with her.

For the first stringers however... all had been meaningless, all is finite.

As expertly described by Sebas in the musical adaptation of the Circus Arc, humans are pathetic because we are merely “accumulating sins in the version of hell [we] have chosen to live.”

V. From foil to team members

The servants at the Phantomhive manor were originally just designed to be foil for Sebas to demonstrate his awesome butler skills. I don’t know whether they were liked at first, but for one I do know that many found them quite annoying or pointless too.

The Circus Arc is the first time we see the significance of the Phantomhive servants, that they’re not just there waiting to be fed by O!Ciel because... he’s a philanthropist of some sort? Yana had made some questionable decisions at first, and she clearly regretted those ‘choices’. I personally see the Circus Arc as her first demonstration of her skills as story writer, and her public proclamation of: “this is Kuroshitsuji’s potential!”

Had the entire series started with the Circus Arc, then surely the animated series would have gotten a much higher budget and a better time-slot for airing.

VI. Humour

The humour in the Circus Arc is also great, but nothing was shoehorned in there for the sake of laughs, neither do these moments disturb the tone of the story.

Everything was funny because they were the inevitable consequences of putting these people together. William had been established as a demon-racist plank, and when made to cooperate with a demon, of course he would say: “my hands will rot”. When called “four-eyes”, of course he would say: “it’s SUIT”.

Many of the comedic moments are centred around our protagonists’ inconveniences, but nobody is inconveniencing them for the sake of inconveniencing them. When Sebastian was not trying to leave the vicinity William mostly let him at peace. O!Ciel for example also couldn’t do many things simply because Doll was clinging to him. But she did not know what was at stake and her actions were well grounded in her immense desire to make new friends. “You are young, I am young. You lost an eye, I lost an eye. Let’s be FRIENDS!”

This is in stark contrast with how ‘funny inconveniences’ were staged before using Lizzie or Grell for example. Lizzie was a drag to O!Ciel because... she’s a girl who wanted everything to go HER way... and Grell was a drag to Sebas because she... is a girl who wanted everything to go HER way.

VII. Ending

The ending of the Circus Arc also carried a bitter-sweet tone that most other arcs do not present. The thematic of “demons dwell in the human nature of stepping on others” is perfectly addressed in the Circus Arc, but it does not end with: “so don’t be evil!”. The Circus Arc simply highlights the issue and reminds us that ‘stepping on others’ does not exist in a vacuum.

Had the objective of the series not been established as “boy who swore on revenge”, and instead be: "rethinking evil”, then the Circus Arc alone would have told the story sufficiently.

The finale of the Circus Arc resonates with its audience because the core principle on which Kuroshitsuji is built is a narrative humankind has always wanted to externalise, but without success: “demons are only as evil as humans allow their own evil to show”.

Aarushi:

1. What is their gender? Nonbinary.

2. What is their sexuality? Asexual.

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?Aarushi is Sanskrit for the first rays of the sun. Which makes so much sense as they are a baby created between Agni and female Sebastian :’) And it’s most likely Agni came up with the name mainly and Sebastian totally loved it immediately. 🖤 In most cases, people seem to like calling Aarushi Aaru for short, so there’s that, and I also headcanoned myself Agni calls his child tiger cub (there was Bengali for it but I can’t find it 🙈) Lastly, Sebastian calls both Aarushi and Ambrose their “kittens” and that sticks too. 🥰 (much to Ambrose’s dismay) 

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger?  Which sibling are they the closest with? As stated above, Ambrose is Aarushi’s only other sibling. In general it was a miracle Seb and Agni were able to have another child after the first, considering the difficulties they endured the first time around, but definitely didn’t regret it! So Aarushi was much older by the time Ambrose was born, and had also likely come and gone to go explore the world on their own and make contracts (they need to eat souls like mama). As for closeness, Aarushi and Ambrose’s relationship is a mixed bag of love/hate. Aka, Aarushi adored their baby brother, no matter what, but Ambrose is always going to feel a bitterness deep down involving his older sibling, considering compared to him, Aarushi has LOTS of power inherited from both Sebastian and Agni’s hand of Kali, and yet.. they really are a peaceful sort and nothing like a demon of Hell themselves!

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Aarush loves both Agni and Sebastian and has a strong bond with both parents. The only thing they ever disagree on is Mama’s idea of eating souls and such. Aarushi is a pacifist through and through, much like Agni, and though this worries Sebastian because they do need to eat souls to survive, Sebastian cannot fault their beloved kitten for how they think of things. As for other relatives, Aarushi considers Grelle Sutcliff and Hannah Annafellows, who are most definitely together and (possibly..?) happily married their aunts, especially since Hannah helped Sebastian through the whole pregnancy in the first place.

Ambrose:

1. What is their gender? Male.

2. What is their sexuality? Bisexual.

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

The name “Ambrose” is Greek, and means “Immortal” ..(I am so so sorry I cannot for the life of me remember why that was picked it was something to do with how ironically his life WAS almost snuffed out, or he was meant to be a powerful demon but didn’t/couldn’t become one.. I dunno! 🙈) And again, Sebastian calls him “kitten” and Aunt Hannah, Grelle and his father Agni call him a little raven or corvus. :3 Meanwhile his now boyfriend calls him “Rosie” as they can shorten his name to that 🖤

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger?  Which sibling are they the closest with?

I think it’s basically the same answer as above :P

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Like the polar opposite of his elder sibling, Ambrose doesn’t get along very well with family. Especially Mum. Mainly due to Sebastian being the one he was meant to be given powers from but couldn’t handle it. Not to mention, with how independent Ambrose is, Sebastian’s motherly attitude constantly gets on his nerves from early on and many times he’d tried even running away from home out of frustration, wanting to be “free”, and of course rebellion in general. For some reason, though, when it comes to Aunt Hannah, Ambrose doesn’t mind her much.. She was the one to save the boy from death by Sebastian’s demonic essence tearing his soul asunder, and that involved her taking away most of the demonic parts of him.. But instead of also targeting her with his rage, Ambrose respects and admires her a little. She is a quiet, calm, knowing comfort. As if she too understands the urge for isolation and independence. 💜 And finally, as for Aunt Grelle, well.. as Hannah’s wife is a bit more hands-on, Ambrose isn’t that fond of her.. but despite that he does respect her fighting skills, as growing up, Ambrose had learned to fight with weapons with her, as well as her junior, Ronald Knox (who loves goading the half-demon on out of spite because he’ll never be a fan of Sebastian, of course.)

Ulva Gelzer-Michaelis:

1. What is their gender? Female.

2. What is their sexuality? Lesbian.

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

Without even needing to look it up again, I know for certain Ulva means She Wolf in old German! uwu As for nick names, obviously most call her pup or little pup, especially her Dad and Mama!!

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?

Ulva is an only child, as it was a miracle that Sebastian (while female of course) and Wolfram managed to have this little one by herself! However, since Wolfram considers Sieglinde Sullivan like a daughter as well, Ulva has come to know the young lady as like an older sister!

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Both Sebastian and Wolfram undeniably adore their only daughter, though the hyperactive little puppy girl does always give them a run for their money, and the demon’s Mother Hen instincts are very high where she is concerned, as Ulva always finds herself getting into things one way or another that she might regret.. other than that and perhaps the older servants of Phantomhive at that time and maybe the Earl too if still alive, no other relatives really.

Eddie the Demon

1. What is their gender? He/them for the most part.

2. What is their sexuality? Demisexual.

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

As most demons under contracts allow their current masters to give them names instead of freely giving out their true name or, in this case, not even having a true name, Eddie let Ambrose decide on that, and thus the boy was like “Hm.. well... with that spooky Victorian Author look I’d say Edgar, y’know, like uh Edgar Allen Poe? But eh.. You don’t look serious enough or old enough to be an Edgar, so how ‘bout Eddie!”

Of course, Ambrose loves calling his imp turned lover plenty of nick names ;), including Ed, sugar, baby, babe, sweetheart...

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?

Well, being a very young imp of Hell, it is unlikely Eddie has any siblings, or even knows about any :P (And the likelihood that any siblings they do have if any would come to kill them for the sake of getting more power and recognition is very high..)

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Like many, many demons of Hell, Eddie likely has no clue at all who exactly created them. :/ It may be unfortunate to us humans to be left like that, but demons really don’t care, especially after a few centuries of adapting to fend for themselves!

Aidan Astre Sutcliff-Michaelis

1. What is their gender? Male.

2. What is their sexuality? n/a as he was last seen/known as merely a toddler so I and @grelleswife would rather let that be until we eventually write something new in that verse where he’s grown older. :3

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

Aidan is a Gaelic/Irish name for “Little fire” and was thought of, of course, by his mother Grelle Sutcliff :3 And obviously both other parents Mey and Sebastian were in agreement. He is a little spark; a little flame they’d all brought to life with their love. 🔥 Besides that, Aidan is still called “baby” by his mama Mey, “kitten” by his papa Sebastian, and “little chap” from his mummy Grelle! 

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?

He is currently an only child! However at the end of our Sebagrellerin rp, he did confess to wanting a sibling, sooo who knows ;3

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Aidan is very close with everyone, and not only his three original parents, but also now Miss Hannah Annafellows who kinda in a way has become a third mother too. >w< 💜

Amy Michaelis

1. What is their gender? Genderfluid, but usually favoring female.

2. What is their sexuality? Pansexual

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

I don’t believe it is possible to derive a nickname from the name Amy, but I think it’s important to note in her original story in That Butler Big Brother, Bard likes calling her “Madam President” in a tender/joking way. >w< (And i personally think after that, back in Hell, Amy INSISTS her subordinates call her Madam President TOO. (though they all find the extra madam part confusing..))

In the original article of Amy the Demon, their other names/other version of their name is Amii or Auns, Hanar, Hanni.

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?

In every verse of this character, the one thing I think that will always be the same is she has an elder sibling named Naberius, who is the fourth Marquis of Hell in the Lesser Key of Solomon, and is who we headcanon Sebastian Michaelis as. Who knows if these two have any other siblings, but I personally like the idea of these two, being the weirdo outcast demons they are, are a rare breed on their own. While other demons in Hell would likely either immediately kill and/or leave any blood related demons to be forgotten, these two stuck together for some strange reason, and our best guess on the why is that as Naberius was much older, nearly an adult by the time Amy came into being, and something instinctively drove the crow demon to stay by her side, and raise her, despite.. the animosity they sometimes share towards each other...

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Neither Amy nor Naberius know or remember for certain who or what their parents are. Amy most definitely recalls absolutely nothing, while her older sibling only vaguely recalls someone very, very old holding them as a youngling close, and between soft, soft soft so soft.. black wings.... But that’s all.

1. What is their gender? Transexual ftm

2. What is their sexuality? I am not completely certain if he is Bisexual or something else at this time, as all I know is story wise he fell hard for Amy, so he is attracted to her but I cannot jump to the conclusion just yet as to what that means.

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?

Adam chose his name when he fully accepted himself as a transexual man, not only just because he liked it, but because of the Biblical humor only he’d understand behind it considering his dead name was Evelynn, similar to “Eve”. It is understandable that many wish to completely forget their dead name, but Adam liked doing this, as he has a rather dark, bitter sense of humor, especially regarding himself. 

As for nicknames, his current Senpai Grelle calls him “Handsome” or “Charming” like Prince Charming, and Amy herself just calls him Boy or “dear boy”. Amy also likes resorting to Ancient Greek or Latin with her terms as it gives her confused flustered looks. >;3

4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?

Most of Adam’s life before becoming a reaper is very sad and a bit left unsaid.. but I think he had an elder sister, who like most of the rest of the family, reacted very badly to uncovering what happened to their deceased relative and the why of it. :( So Adam would likely never bring up his older sister again.. except maybe briefly, but only maybe after learning of Amy’s relationship to the other demon Adam meets eventually, Sebastian Michaelis, who is her older brother basically.

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?

Again, most of that is very depressing and dismal, as they never would have accepted Adam for who he truly was, and had tried forcing him to live a certain way he did not want to. :(

And so... that’s most of my OCs!! XDD @grelleswife and I have something else in the works involving our current RP, but i can’t spoil it right here so that’s all left out! And the only others were tiny characters like Sylvia the Angel from the RP, and my self insert that I don’t think i need to put down here. 🙈 Thank you though for sendig me this!!
