Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985). A gay man and a political prisoner are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies and his own life.

Oh, I really loved this one. Tenderly told with rich cinematography and transcendent performances from Raul Julia and William Hurt, this is a movie that chooses connection and intimacy in the face of violence and isolation again and again and again. It pulses with both the pain and the release of those choices in a way that had me more than a little misty. A really special watch. 8/10.

Do you get the impression the live action is treating us like utter morons?? Like I thought that making it aimed at an older audience would open the doors for more subtle story telling, but no, they're just using monologues to tell us eveything! Like in the second episode Katara's like 'oh his power isn't that he's the avatar, it's that he ~connects~ to people'. Girl we're not idiots we can see that!! And the first episode with Aang's goddawful 'I don't want this responsibility' monologue

THIS, YES. The word that keeps coming to mind is definitely "subtlety". The show for literal children? Had it. The remake for adults? Not so much.

A Fish Called Wanda (1988). In London, four very different people team up on a jewel heist, then try to double-cross one another for the loot, complicated by their efforts to fool a very proper barrister.

I was really expecting to love this one - particularly as a big Monty Python fan - but I don't know. It didn't really do all that much for me. I didn't mind the silliness or the hijinks, and Kevin Kline really is pretty funny in it, but to me it just felt like it kept changing its mind about what it wanted to be in a way that didn't charm me as much as it seems to have others. So yeah. Just not for me, I guess. 4/10.
