I’ve got thoughts about Dark Crisis, like as a concept. Disregarding the fact that it’s premise is stupid (oh no the justice league died, they’ve never done that before, whatever shall we do), it also feels so disrespectful.
Like they show Jon trying to put together a new league, with everyone being gigantic douchebags. Which, A. Why would that responsibility fall to him, he’s a child? B. Why do they even need a new league, doesn’t the league have reserve members, or am I being stupid? Why wouldn’t the still alive members + the reserve members be the new league? And importantly, C. Why are we acting like the loss of the league is this giant impossible loss?
Sure, emotionally it’d be massive for the characters who lost their mentors, their friends, their heroes, and their family. And I can see why the world would slightly fall into chaos thanks to villains thinking there’s no one there to stop them. But then the world would just… go on? Idk why the writers are acting like the rest of the superhero community aren’t just as capable (at least all together) as the leaguers who died.
What would the world do without Superman? Idk, and good thing we don’t have to find out since we already have one (who has been earths sole superman for almost a year now mind you). But if that’s not enough we also have superboy, supergirl, steel, and a whole host of non super characters with similar power sets.
What would the world do without Wonder Woman? Aquaman? Green Arrow? Don’t know, don’t have to find out. We already have one Wonder Woman, three wonder girls, and an entire island of potential wonder women. We also have Jackson, Garth, Mera, Dolphine and an entire ocean of atlanteans. Not only do we have another green arrow, red arrow, Arsenal, and we’re about to get speedy back if I’m not mistaken, but I’m sure other people can also learn archery if necessary.
The Flash? There’s at least 3 other flashes, one kid flash, and one impulse ready to go.
Batman? Has an entire army of orphan children at his disposal, and an entire team of Batmen running about the place.
Green Lantern? ...
Really the only people who don’t have a lot of people with the exact same powers as them are Zatanna, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkgirl. And even then they still have some people with those exact powers.
Idk it just feels so disrespectful to the 99% of superheroes still alive, especially those like Nightwing and Arsenal who have existed as characters for longer than most of the leaguers who died, to act like they wouldn’t be able to pick up the slack. Like the world needed those leaguers so badly that everyone will be divided, no one will know what to do or how to move forward, and the everything will fall apart without them.
I’m not saying I hate the concept. I’m all for a story honouring the legacies of the league, and focusing on the interpersonal relationships of the community (not sure why the league had to die for that but whatever). My problem is with the way the promotion of the story and the story itself is being framed like a “how could the world possibly manage” story. When realistically, the world would mourn and be a little extra chaotic for a few days, maybe weeks, then it’d be fine again.

DC Comics Announces Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle Young Adult Graphic Novels
Tumblr media
DC Comics has announced two new young adult graphic novels: Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana and This Land s Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story.
Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana hails from Jordie Bellaire and Paulina Ganucheau. The graphic novel is a collection of stories about young Diana originally published in Wonder Woman #770-#779 and #785-#796 and the Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular.
"The world may know her as Wonder Woman, but once upon a time she was Diana, the young princess of Themyscira. Back then, she struggled to find her place on an island deemed paradise by many, but which was, to her, a prison. Trapped in her role as a royal and shielded from the harsh realities of Man’s World, Diana yearns for adventure, or at least a purpose. So when ancient texts portraying her home’s history go missing, she gets both. How far will our hero go to find the texts and the truths they’re hiding?" (DC Comics)
Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana goes on sale on August 6, 2024.
Tumblr media
This Land s Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story hails from Julio Anta, Jacoby Salcedo, and Francesco Segala. The story follows a high school aged Jaime Reyes, who lives in El Paso, Texas. TJaime loves his family, culture, and home. "But lately he’s begun to realize that he and his border community are being used as pawns in an increasingly toxic immigration debate.
The last few months have seen armed troops deployed along the U.S. and Mexico border, manufactured crackdowns at official border crossings, and now, at the community level, a mounting resentment amongst a disaffected and reactionary group who believe they’re being “replaced” by El Paso’s growing immigrant population. And to make matters worse, one of Jaime’s oldest friends, Riley, has bought into the propaganda. What started off as innocent web searches have now led Riley down a path to joining an unabashed hate group with a chapter in El Paso looking to cause some real-world violence.
But Jaime’s problems get even more complicated when he finds an odd bug-like artifact while stargazing. He starts feeling a little different—like there’s another voice in his head pushing him toward his basest instincts. And to make matters worse, he’s been having surreal dreams that show him that the true threat El Paso faces isn’t “illegal aliens,” but actual aliens known as the Reach. In fact, according to his dreams, Jaime is meant to pave the way for the Reach’s impending invasion!" (DC Comics)
This Land s Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story goes on sale on October 1, 2024.

Hello! I'm an art history major who had a very film and performance art history heavy semester and I was wondering if you ever saw Dara Birnbaum's 'Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman (1978-79)'? When I was speaking to my film professor about it after class he said that someone had stolen the film reel for the artist to use, so I'd love to know if you knew anything about it.
Tumblr media
Yes! Too cool. I don't know anything about a stolen reel, but I do appreciate this project.

Tumblr media
Who's Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire?
Carol Ferris is the boss and occasional love interest of Hal Jordan. Her family owns the Ferris Aircraft company, where she acts as an executive, and sometimes as a pilot. She is also Star Sapphire, a once villainous character occupying another part of her personality entirely. In the Star Sapphire Corps, where she fights for love across the universe, she has taken on a more heroic role.

Hi what are your favorite green lantern comics? Or even dc in general. I'm kind of new to comic books and I'm looking for recommendations
ooh you're in luck because i have SEVERAL recommendations
my first recommendations for people looking to get into new characters, families, or dc in general is usually going to be the 80th anniversary specials. all of them are about 100 pages each, featuring multiple new storylines for each character. in addition, each story will usually correlate to a specific era for those characters, often inviting back writers and artists who were prominent or influential to the character during those times. my favorite specials are the green lantern and green arrow specials, although there are also some for robin, aquaman, catwoman, wonder woman, and... unfortunately the joker (derogatory)
i really really like these specials because they give you the opportunity to find out what parts/eras /characters you like and read from there. for example, the green lantern special covers alan scott, hal jordan, guy gardner & kilowog, john stewart, sinestro, the four corpsmen (hal, john, guy, kyle), the hard traveling heroes, jessica cruz, kyle rayner, and simon baz. it's a really good way to get into comics, because honestly? the best way to start reading comics is to find a character you like, find the comics they appear in, and read.
some specific series recommendations for the gl's are...
green lantern 1990 (my personal favorite)
green lantern: rebirth (2004) and green lantern (2005) (nowhere close to my favorites, but important to understanding modern gl worldbuilding)
convergence: green lantern/parallax (a two issue mini, basically a little bit of a redo on events in the 1990 series in line with the rest of the convergence story)
green lantern/flash: faster friends (two issue mini focusing on the meaning of legacy heroes and one of my favorite dynamics: wally and kyle)
flash & green lantern: the brave and the bold (six issue mini focusing on the friendship between barry allen and hal jordan)
hal jordan & the green lantern corps (i have my problems with this run, but it is overall an entertaining read)
far sector (i haven't gotten around to reading this yet, but i have heard very good things)
next, here are some general recommendations for the overall dcu
batman: the long halloween
robin 1993, batman & robin 2011, robin: son of batman, and robin 2021
batgirl 2000, batgirl 2009
batman & the signal
batwoman: elegy
birds of prey 1998
flash 1987 (specifically mark waid's run, which becomes continues at about issue #61, but he and messner-loeb alternated a lot before that)
impulse 1995
the flash 2016 (i haven't been able to make it all the way through this, but it has some storylines that i enjoy). at issue #768, wally wests 2nd flash run begins, and i am LOVING it so far. definitely recommend it
green arrow: year one (seven issue mini, covers oliver queen's time on the island)
green lantern and green arrow: hard traveling heroes (covers green lantern 1960 #76-87)
green arrow: the longbow hunters (another mini, this one three issues)
green arrow 1998 (if you want to read for ollie, read the first 100ish issues, if you want to read for connor, read the issues after that)
green arrow 2001 (however... i would recommend taking the winnick part of this run with a grain of salt if you do read it. it is. not the best characterization)
green arrow 2016 (i had to consciously forget that this was technically new52 ollie in order to get through it, but i did enjoy it. worth reading for emiko and dinahollie, at least)
i also enjoy team books with younger heroes, such as young justice 1998 and teen titans/titans runs
naomi 2019, and naomi: season two
these recommendations are very biased towards batfam, flash, and ga, because that is what i read the most, so if anybody who is a fan of different characters has recommendations feel free to add on!! i have also compiled an entire seperate, far more comprehensive rec list on the batfamily before, if anyone is interested in that

Remembering Dennis O’Neil who passed away 3 years ago today at the age of 81.
Denny O’Neil (May 3, 1939 - June 11, 2020) worked on countless characters for both Marvel and DC (beginning in 1968 with Beware the Creeper #1) with artists from Neal Adams (1941-2022) to Steve Ditko (1927-2015), including updating classic characters, from taking away Wonder Woman’s powers to make her more modern in the 1970s to stripping Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow of his wealth and had him focus on more political plights of the time. One of the most important creators within Batman’s long history, O’Neil brought the Batman back to his Gothic, Golden Age roots after the campy era of the 1960s and the wildly popular Adam West television series. Alongside artists like Adams and Dick Giordano, O'Neil introduced new characters into the Dark Knight's mythos, such as Ra’s al Ghul (1971’s Batman #232), Talia al Ghul (1971’s Detective Comics #411), Leslie Thompkins and the term 'Crime Alley' (1976’s Detective Comics #457), and Jean-Paul Valley aka Azrael (1992’s Batman: Sword of Azrael). O'Neil in the 70s also reinvented rogues like Two-Face (1971’s Batman #234) and Joker in the now iconic tale "The Joker's Five Way Revenge" (1973’s Batman #251), making the Clown Prince of Crime return to his murderous and chaotic persona that we now see in modern media today. Working on several publications centered around the Caped Crusader and many other icons within American comic books, we will always thank and remember Denny O'Neil for being an incredible part of Batman's 80+ year history.🦇📚🙏🏽
🖼️: In "Tap Tap Tap”, the last story within ‘Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular’ published June 29, 2021, Larry O’Neil beautifully celebrates the life and career of his late father in a silent 6 page story illustrated by Jorge Fornes and Dave Stewart.

Hi!! You may have answered this before, in which case my b, but I was wondering what your favourite quotes either by or about Selina are
“i can’t take it, but she can. the catwoman - she can stand it all, everything crummy that life can throw at her, she just throws it right back - and it doesn’t even faze her - nothing hurts her - it’s like she’s dead - oh, maggie - it’s so much easier being dead!” (catwoman vol. 1 #4)
“bast was egypt’s cat-head goddess, keeper of the divine solar heat. nobody messed with her, even the heavy guys like osiris and taurt the crocodile. they’ve always liked power, cats” (batman #460)
“don’t come on all smug and heroic with me. i don’t ask anyone for help. especially a man. i’m quite capable of looking out for myself” (batman: catwoman defiant)
“i know men, i know what they want… what he wants… the bat and the cat… yeah, right, as if… damn him to hell… and damn me” (catwoman 80th anniversary super spectacular, “little bird”)
“most women will fall in love at least once in their lives, though probably more. falling gets better with practice. some will get lucky after only the fourth or sixth time. a few will wait to fall forever. and she will always land on her feet” (action comics #614)
“i’ve become vulnerable in ways that allowed someone to hurt me in ways i didnt understand. i won’t let that happen again. when i walk away from this life, it will be on my terms” (catwoman vol. 2 #94)
"what is the victory of a cat on a hot tin roof? i wish i knew.. just staying on it, i guess, as long as she can" (cat on a hot tin roof, referenced in an interview from mindy newell)
"i'd just like to make something quite clear - i do not eat people! not unless they make me angry, of course!" (detective comics #612)
"play your games, selina. just remember, the house always wins. keep the change" "i am the house, sweetheart" (catwoman 80th anniversary super spectacular, “little bird”)
"she is a woman whose loneliness hides behind hard eyes and a cynical smile. she had learned the brutalities of life as a child, and to survive, she had hardened her heart, had determined to keep the world at arm's length always" (catwoman 80th anniversary super spectacular, “little bird”)
"we all live in cages of one kind or another. but in the end we are all freed" (catwoman 80th anniversary super spectacular, “little bird”)
