Crushes and Squishes (1/14)
Tumblr media
Her feet in the water, Kyra stared out over the sea. It had been one of those perfect summer days when the pressure of school obligations were left behind, the weather was just that sweet middle of wonderfully warm but not too hot and the company had been just right.
She smiled. The company had been just right. She was still thankful every day for the connection she and Malik had made a year and a half ago at that awful birthday party at Holly’s. He had proved to be the most awesome friend in the world. And they clicked on so many levels. Okay, he didn’t share her obsession for horses, and she didn’t really get those RPGs he played, but when it came to the real stuff, they understood each other. They could talk for hours about anything and everything. It was a shame he would now be on holiday for two weeks.
She knew about the rumours going through the school saying she and Malik were secretly hooking up, and they had a good laugh about that together. A relationship? A romantic one? Them? Ha! That was never going to happen. Not only did Kyra not feel attracted to Malik in that way; he didn’t feel attracted to anyone in that way. He told her months ago he had come to realise he was aro/ace. Aromantic and asexual. Malik hadn’t told a lot of people about this, just some of his online gaming friends and Kyra. Not because it was a secret but mostly because he didn’t feel like explaining. From their research online, Kyra and Malik had found a lot of misunderstanding, especially for young aro/ace people. “You just haven’t met the right person yet.” This made Kyra angry, but Malik shrugged it off, saying, “Maybe they’re right, maybe there is someone I match with. Maybe I will find I’m demisexual or grayromantic or vice versa or whatever, but that doesn’t make me less aro/ace. I know my truth.” This was the true spirit of Malik: somewhat stubborn but always confident.

There was that scene in Kim's Convenience where the daughter is in her photography class and her lecturer is looking up her website, realises the first page isn't hers, the second is also not hers, she has to go to page 2 of google and at that point just throws down her hands and says at that point, as a potential customer, she already loses interest and gives up cause it's not worth the effort
and lately I just feel like the whole fucking internet feels like that
I want to look up how to use cricut stuff and what that even really is, what can I do with what but when I put their name in i get taken to the fucking shop with no explanations far and wide, then next link is also the shop, next link is ALSO the shop but different, and by the time I finally find a page that has any kind of explanation, i'm so annoyed that the hoops is makes me jump through THEN—e.g. selecting which topic I want to learn more about—I'm no longer interested in doing this shit
the other day I wanted to look up what Nokia is up to in terms of phones these days but they no longer have 1 coherent website. In general, many places seem to not want any coherence in their websites, or sub-menus that you can easily navigate
Like, I come from myspace. I know how to navigate the internet. I played WoW in days of dial-up internet. And yet, everything is so goddamn convoluted and incoherent, there is NO structure or logic to anything and on top of that, google, and with it most other search engines, are fucking fried! A few years ago, if a website was really badly designed, you could just navigate back, google the website + search term you needed and get there somehow, but now that is also useless more often than not!
At this point I am genuinely over the internet. We had a good 15 years with it, let's pack it up.

Professors as Social Media Platforms
1. Severus Snape — Tumblr (dark mode, obviously)
Unsearchable username. Reblogs potion disasters and gothic poetry at 2AM. No tags. No comments. Just layered emotional trauma and an occasional hex.
“He’s been online this whole time. He just never speaks.”
2. Minerva McGonagall — LinkedIn (with terrifying precision)
A CV so flawless it terrifies Ministry recruiters. Endorses Transfiguration and Professional Decency.
“Tenure: Eternal. Patience: Exhausted.”
3. Albus Dumbledore — Reddit
Knows everything. Posts nothing. Occasionally leaves cryptic comments that start philosophical wars.
“User prophecyWatcher_1865 strikes again.”
4. Sybill Trelawney — Pinterest (but cursed)
Boards full of teacup patterns, celestial charts, and unsettling predictions. Half aesthetic, half apocalyptic.
“Today’s vibe: Death… or a new beginning.”
5. Filius Flitwick — Duolingo
Tiny. Cheerful. Slightly too enthusiastic about correct pronunciation. Your streak is his pride and joy.
“Ten points to Ravenclaw for properly rolled Rs!”
6. Pomona Sprout — YouTube (gardening side of the internet)
Uploads low-res but heartwarming videos about herbology. Comments are wholesome chaos.
“This video taught me to love magical compost. Thank you, Professor!”
7. Remus Lupin — WordPress (password protected blog)
Wrote three brilliant posts in 2006. Hasn’t updated since. Still logs in weekly just to reread the comments.
“It was always about the subtext.”
8. Gilderoy Lockhart — Instagram (blue-tick energy)
Heavily filtered. All selfies, no substance. Somehow still gets brand deals from Flourish & Blotts.
“New wand, same charming smile! 💫✨”
9. Dolores Umbridge — Nextdoor
Uses all caps. Reports students for breathing too loud. Wants to ban Centaur-owned businesses.
“Just a neighbourly reminder: no loitering on school grounds after 6PM.”
10. Horace Slughorn — X (formerly Twitter, still self-important)
Knows exactly who to follow and when to retweet. Every post sounds like a dinner party anecdote. Only uses “exclusive” group chats.
“Ah yes, I taught her! Bright girl. Very tweetable.”
11. Rubeus Hagrid — Facebook (but only uses it for photos of magical creatures)
Every post starts with “Bless ‘em.” Half blurry selfies, half emotional rants about dragons. Comments on your post just to say “proud of yeh.”
“Tha’s Fang in his wee jumper. Don’t he look smart?”
12. Poppy Pomfrey — NHS Online (but with magic and no patience)
Diagnoses in 0.5 seconds. Treats in 0.2. You leave the ward cured… and slightly afraid.
“Mr Weasley, this is not a hotel.”
13. Professor Binns — Wikipedia (but the 2004 version)
Outdated. Uneditable. And somehow still being cited. Monotone delivery. Nobody knows when he last logged out.
“Still loading… eternally.” Then… “He died mid-sentence and the syllabus didn’t even notice.”
14. Rolanda Hooch — Strava (but make it brooms)
She tracks your flight patterns and your attitude. Will not hesitate to bench you mid-air.
“You crash it, you clean it.”
15. Quirinus Quirrell — YouTube (Conspiracy Channel Edition)
Starts with potion reviews. Ends in full possession. Comments turned off. For safety.
“This went from ‘fun facts’ to ‘run fast’ real quick.”
16. Alastor Moody — Telegram (but for ex-Aurors only)
Locked. Paranoid. Sends seven messages when you say “hi.” Profile picture is just his magical eye.
“CONSTANT VIGILANCE. Even in group chats.”
⸻ 🐾 Bonus
Argus Filch — Maintenance Admin page Mrs Norris — CCTV in feline form
🧹 Filch — Admin Dashboard (password: pain) Only logs in to block students. 🚨 Mrs Norris — Notification System (with claws) Silent. All-seeing. And somehow already behind you. “Student presence detected. Begin glaring.”

do you think the 2019 tumblr acquisition was made on a more optimistic note? In terms of how they thought the site could have been made profitable or at least self-sustaining.
yeah it felt good at the time because tumblr was owned by Verizon. switching hands to a company that was at least aligned with what tumblr does (blogging) and a private company made it feel like Tumblr had a chance to refocus and reprioritize, but Automattic was not a good fit for Tumblr culture
because tumblr was mostly nyc based and had things like, observed public holidays, and an office (this was pre-pandemic). there was this transitional period where tumblr was treated with some exceptions while they adjusted to the Automattic way of things. this strengthened the divide as seasoned Automattic employees saw us as getting special treatment like sub-competitive wages (as compared to absolutely not competitive wages) and a day off during national holidays.
this transitional policy was loosely documented and adhered to, and was unceremoniously ended by a decree from the top that Tumblr no longer has holidays off. i'm not going to say which national holiday triggered this change of heart but, lol, it's a doozy
additionally there were only a handful of automattic people who understood what tumblr was, and much less who understood the vibe of Tumblr's userbase. i know there were at least a few people who thought Tumblr was an analog of wordpress and didnt even know the dashboard existed
Tumblr employees started leaving en masse because their benefits and compensation were cut. Mullenwig's seagull style of management and the general disconnect between Automattic and Tumblr culture accelerated the exodus. I remember reading on Automattic's anonymous employee-only message board (yeah.) employees expressing their happiness that the "lazy overpaid Verizon acqui-hires" (the Tumblr staff, who had lower salaries than other tech companies and never identified as Verizon or Yahoo or anything except Tumblr) were being shed like dead weight and soon it will be Automattic in charge of everything
Also, side note: Automattic is weirdly anti-profanity as an unofficial workplace policy ordained from the CEO. How's that gonna fit with Tumblr?
So the initial feelings of freedom from Verizon and opportunity to work on things that might turn Tumblr around were dampened under the wet blanket of pay cuts, benefit cuts, cuts to time off (Automattic has "unlimited" vacation, lol), bad management, and an unwelcoming attitude from naysayers
The remaining old pre-2019 staff are very, very few in number. It's mostly Automattic's show now, and you can see how that's working out for them. i was once hopeful it would work out for Tumblr but that hope has long waned. it would not surprise me if the biggest advances toward profitability have been due to employees leaving Tumblr and not being replaced

Billy Joel
We tend to think life has an on/off switch. You’re either alive or your dead. But it rarely goes down that way.
We thought our classic rock stars were forever. Until they weren’t. They were going to go on tour, maybe walking and playing a bit more slowly, singing in a lower key, but they’d be right there on stage and then POOF, they’d’ be gone.
Happened with Jeff Beck. And then there are acts that are sick but unless you’re inside the circle you don’t know, like Glenn Frey and Jimmy Buffett. The former died before his time, at age 67, which may seem old to many, but not to today’s baby boomers. Glenn was ripped-off. Then again, you can’t fight father time and you can’t fight your genes. Sure, bad behavior can shorten your life, you can become a member of the 27 Club, but oftentimes you’re just minding your own business and…that twinge, that symptom that you think will go away doesn’t and suddenly you find yourself on the wrong side of the line. Happened to Peter Frampton. Who gets kudos for going on record about it, because most men do not.
What exactly was Donald Trump rambling about at West Point yesterday? Now he’s got those on the left wondering about dementia. Can you really attribute it to the weave? Are we seeing the Donald decline in plain sight like we did Joe Biden, with all his supporters and inside acolytes denying what we see with our own eyes as if they’re sweepers on a curling sheet?
Then there are the six Democratic members of Congress who passed in the past year. Can happen to anyone, but odds are it will happen more to the aged. Seventy is not the new forty, fifty or even sixty. Your attitude can’t fight genetics. We have better health care, but everybody deteriorates over time. It’s a shock, assuming you’re tested. I had a clear carotid artery scan in the nineties, but not recently. And when I bring it up to most people, even those with heart attacks in their families, they almost all say they’ve never even had this test. They’d rather live in ignorance, believing they’re going to last forever, like Warren Zevon, who might have been saved if he’d gone to the doctor earlier, but he didn’t.
So we’ve been laughing for decades about the Stones. You’d better go see them now because it could be the last time. But they keep keepin’ on. We expected Keith to go first, but out of the blue Charlie died, the Big C got the drummer, and it could get you too.
But you don’t believe it. And you believe if you’ve got it you’re going to fight it, even though science says otherwise. Your mental attitude has nothing to do with your results/possible recovery. Not a thing. You go through the course of treatment and you see what happens. And the weird thing is the person on the precipice usually makes peace with their passing just before they go, even though those who remain cannot.
But life goes on. That’s the amazing thing. LBJ was sworn in on the plane back from the assassination of JFK. Nobody is indispensable, everybody is expendable, we circle the wagons, squeeze into your space and go on, not because we’re a*sholes, but because that’s the nature of being human, it’s in our DNA to survive.
As for Billy Joel… For a long time he was like Meat Loaf, an absolute icon on the east coast, but not so much on the west. They never played “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” on the radio in Los Angeles, never mind most not knowing who Phil Rizzuto was. But Marvin Lee Aday is gone now. Covid got him. He refused the vaccine. I bet he’d take it now if he had the chance.
But we all get to rule our lives the way we want to. And we think this is a privilege, freedom, but in truth many are slackers, they don’t have enough money or enough character to take care of themselves. To dot the i and cross the t, to go to the dentist and doctor on a regular basis. If you’re poor you live less long, those are statistics, but we live in a world where no one believes them anyway, everybody believes they’re going to live forever.
All of my friends do, everybody in their seventies. Whether retired or not. There’s endless roadway before the sun sets. Only there’s not. Whether it be by accident, like with Dave Shapiro, or bad luck, like with Michael Leon. But everybody convinces themselves their situation is different, that they’re immune.
And despite all this talk about the aged constantly discussing their health, generally speaking men do not. They don’t admit their failings. How are you doing? GREAT! But then you dig beneath the surface, peel back the layers. and if they’ve gone to the doctor you find out this is untrue, their body is deteriorating, it’s got flaws, but they don’t want to admit it.
First it was the acts that made it in the sixties. Now it’s those who peaked in the seventies, even eighties. They’re falling off the radar screen.
But what’s worse is most of them will never be remembered, most of them are unknown by the younger generations. Those records you bought, those shows you went to, they don’t know and they don’t care and if you’re judging them for it let me quiz you on your parents’ music, I doubt you’ll know much.
So Billy Joel… He’s been married and divorced more than once. He’s been ripped-off, losing almost all of his money. He had a bad motorcycle accident. But he’s always bounced back, always.
Billy finally broke in L.A. with “My Life” in 1978. And he was one of the few classic acts who got on MTV and stayed there, Billy was a staple.
But then he decided to record no new music.
But something funny happened along the way. With no hits, his rep got even better. He went on tour with Elton John, dueling pianos, implying that he was just as big as the English star, and then he wasn’t performing that much and then he started to do big shows, even stadiums, and playing Madison Square Garden every month and…
Those MSG shows were not rote. He switched up the numbers, he had guest stars, they were positively alive. Which is kind of strange for such a big stage, most people are afraid to do this, but Billy became comfortable in his own skin, and he became even more self-deprecating, people love it when you have a sense of humor about yourself. Furthermore, he still had his chops, go to the show and you’ll be amazed. But will you be able to go anymore?
It’s not exactly clear from the stories in the press. We learned that performing made his condition worse and now he’s going to physical therapy and I’ve got no idea how this plays out, but there’s a chance you’ll never be able to see Billy Joel on stage ever again. And if you haven’t and want to, you’ll feel ripped-off.
Yes, that joke about the Stones is now true. This truly could be the last time.
It’s astounding that these old dudes (and it’s almost all males) can still ply the boards. Mick Jagger is still dancing, yet he had heart surgery. But what else are they going to do, stay home? Then again, Mick Ralphs has been in a nursing home for the better part of a decade. His playing is still stellar on the recording of “All the Young Dudes,” but he can’t play it on stage anymore. And the man who wrote it, David Bowie, will have been gone for ten years in January.
It’s a wake-up call. Then again, I seem to be the only one who wants to be conscious when I’m dying. Everybody I know wants to die in their sleep. I don’t get that. You’re alive and kicking and then you don’t wake up, having no idea that it was your last day on earth? No, I want to see it coming.
But no one sees the end of the classic rock performers coming.
Oh, they talk about it, about how their business will be missed, but now there are younger acts that can sell out stadiums.
It’s all going down the drain. It’s the nature of life. You can get plastic surgery, go on a GLP-1 and look just marvelous, but that does not change your DNA and the attrition of age.
Everybody’s in denial. Joe Biden believed he could rule until he was 86. Now it looks like he probably won’t even live that long. And we were supposed to believe too. In this artifice.
No one lives forever. Everything falls away. Billy Joel is 76. Your mom might be in her nineties, as mine was before she passed, but my dad died at 70. Sure, there are spry septuagenarians out there, but a ton are dying too.
But no one wants to talk about this, everybody wants to put on a brave face. Like I said, everybody thinks they’re going to live forever, but this is not the case.
So, if you’re in your seventies, don’t keep pushing your desires into the future. If you want to see that act, go NOW, because you may never be able to again. As for spending your money, and hopefully you have some, financial advisors will tell you one of the biggest hurdles they must overcome is convincing their clients to spend their money. Sure, if you want to save it and give it to your progeny, fine, but if you’re denying yourself…
As for medical breakthroughs… Good luck now that Trump has excised employees and wants to hold back money for research at universities. You want to pay no additional taxes, but believe me, on your deathbed, you’ll wish there was a cure.
I hope there is for Billy Joel. The last time I saw him was at the Hollywood Bowl, and I couldn’t ask for anything more, he was as good as he could have possibly been.
And I play his “Songs in the Attic” LP on a regular basis, it’s emblazoned upon my brain.
But that might be the only place it lives in the future.
“I don’t need you to worry for me ’cause I’m all right”
But fifty years later we are worried. Billy is no longer spry and neither are we.
“I don’t care what you say anymore this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone”
That’s one thing you realize as you get older, we’re all equal. And we all excel in certain areas. We may not be able to play and sing like Billy Joel, but we might be able to fix the toilet or the computer or do a whole host of other things. That was your life. And in most cases, other than your family and a few friends, you’re being left alone.
But it’s art that brings us together. And nothing so much as musicians. They sing their life, which we identify with. They make us feel connected, they give us a reason to live. They’re off on the horizon and we keep trying to get closer to them.
But ultimately it’s a mirage. They’re gone. You think you know them but you never really did. Can we really ever even know another person?
But there’s nothing worse than being alone.
All those acts from way back when, they were ubiquitous in a way today’s acts are not. EVERYBODY who was conscious in 1978 knows “My Life,” whether they liked it or not, you could not escape it.
Yes, some people hated Billy Joel, but all these years later…
The same people who hated the Carpenters now love them.
But they pushed Karen over the edge.
We all are just dust in the wind.
But that’s more than a song.
This leaving…I don’t know where to put  my emotions, which are palpable, if for no other reason than no one else admits to having them.
Maybe they do.
But maybe the only way we can connect is through the records.
Those classic rock tracks. They were more than songs, they were life itself.
But the candle does not burn forever, at some point it either burns down to nothing or gets snuffed out.
Hopefully yours won’t get snuffed out before your time.
But it could happen, never forget that.
P.S. If you type “my life lyrics” into Google (sans the quotation marks) you get J. Cole’s song from 2021, and if that doesn’t prove the point…
---------------
The ending of one particular sentence above did me in:
"....David Bowie, will have been gone for ten years in January."
Oof.
That's a little cosmic bitch-slap of a realization I really did NOT want to have to acknowledge right now, but here we are.

OK I'm so sick of this lol. I've blocked terms to keep panic posts about Tumblr shUTTInG doWN from appearing on my dashboard but they are still there.
I've heard that the news is "Tumblr laid off 25 people". I've now seen that the news is "Tumblr now only HAS 25 people working there". I've seen a lot of people not having a single fucking source. So I spent 10 minutes looking into it all.
This is from Automattic. That is Tumblr's parent company. They also own Wordpress.
A lot of places have written articles that essentially parrot what's said there. Some with more information than others. Note, IDK where they are getting their information!
They (Automattic) are cutting back on 16% of their workforce. which is a total of 280ish people. The reason for this is (of course) for the company to make more money. That is the driving force behind this. There is no talk anywhere about anything under the Automattic umbrella being shut down. There is talk about AI being a part of making money. I would bet 1 american dollar that THAT is what will happen to Tumblr very soon. (that piece is from an article on Techstory.)
There is a chance EVERY DAY that any webbed site you like could just disappear with no warning. That's what happened with NewTumbl. It sucks. Yes you should back up your stuff. But I swear to god no one I've seen in my simblr circle has posted a source. Where are you getting the number 25? WHERE???
All I have seen the last few days is people panic posting and spreading misinformation. It's exhausting.
Don't take my word above btw. Do your own research. There might be several things I said that are wrong!! Who knows!! i'm just a singular person still dealing with immense grief for fucks sake.

So, I played the Riffins for the first time since I dunno. The first serious time on the new computer, definitely.
I have a bunch posts worth of screenshot backlog for all of my saves, I think, so in theory I could start posting again now. It's really just a matter of doing it.
What follows is some geeking that may interest nobody, but this is just how I roll.
The first silly thing is that I now have screenshots in 16:10 aspect ratio. On my old computer, I ran Windows at a low resolution partly for performance and partly because I could keep the 4:3 aspect ratio, i.e. a much narrower display for the same height. My reasoning is that when you post pics, either on Wordpress or here, the width of the image determines the size you see. A wider aspect ratio gets sized down to the width of the dashboard you're looking at, and everything is smaller. In my current setup. I pretty much have to run at a higher screen resolution, and it looks awfully nice honestly. Sims 3 doesn't have any 4:3 aspect ratio options for modern computer resolutions. I may see if I can hack it in the options file. If I can't, it'll be reeeealy obvious when I move on to the new gameplay 🤷‍♀️.
For technical nerds, if in fact there are any reading this, I'm experimenting with playing the game on Codeweavers Crossover, a distribution of wine, which in turn is an implementation of Windows API for Mac users. I have traditionally played the game on a Windows virtual machine in Parallels. Running an entire second operating system in order to play one game is a bit much, but you do what you can do. I have messed around in Mac 64-bit, and it does really super smoothly for a new game, but it doesn't support core mods (no ErrorTrap or UntranslatedKey), and existing saves (at least modded ones) have not for me without crashing.
I tried Sims with Crossover on my old Intel Mac (man that thing was so top-of-the-line six years ago), and it ran delightfully fast and crashed within 10 minutes. Crossover has done a lot of updates to its 32-bit support since then, but only for the newer Mac architecture. Now that I have one of these fancy Apple Silicon doohickies, I tried again. The play was not as dizzyingly fast as it was on Intel, with the advantage that it played smoothly with all mods for an entire session of about 1.5 hours. Sooooo.... maybe this will work? I don't want to jinx it. I do have Parallels+Windows to run some other stuff if this doesn't cut it.
I'm not even going to try Reshade. It's too exciting that this no-Windows approach might actually work at all. Plus with the higher resolution and the lack of Windows, the game just looks better to me anyway.
I haven't tried to play the Samples yet with all their weird skintones and custom everything. The decades history challenge might even be worse in that regard. The Riffins at least run in an EA world. We. Shall. See.
