Tip for adult artists if your focus is improving your anatomy and drawing bodies that feel more grounded in a space, genuinely one of the best exercises for that is to draw smut.
You don't have to post it. Hell, you can burn it when you're done for all it matters. But hardly anything will give you more of an understanding of a realistic human body interacting in 3D space when you smush two or more of them together.
#art advice#18+ art#obviously not the only way to go about it#but I definitely learned more from drawing smut than from gesture drawings alone#if you're adverse/repulsed by images then non-sexual intimacy would work just fine#I'll admit references are hard cause I hate searching for irl stuff#but worst case scenario 3D model poser apps can help you find the general positions of things and you can pose however you need to#at this point I've been practicing construction a lot so I can just draw from my own understanding of anatomy#and I'll fill in the rest by using reference which can often just be my own photos or looking at my own hands/mouth/etc#added bonus is if you do it enough that embarrassment goes away eventually#but don't be upset with yourself if you are painfully shy at the start that's perfectly normal#ok sorry this turned into a ramble#artists of tumblr#demirambles

Why does Ren have 4 ears? Are they all real or is one set fake?
Hehe I’ve gotten this question a lot actually! They’re all real— I like to think hybridization isn’t always a clean balance of traits, so Ren just unfortunately ended up with two sets of ears— his Dog ears being much more receptive to sound, naturally— and sometimes when the extra intake of sound is too overwhelming, I imagine he wears earplugs in his human ears to help adjust :> it’s a bit weird, but idk! i like to make designs funky and nonconventional! I liked the idea that Ren had hearing struggles due to wonky hybridization and just kept the concept :>

Hi uhh how did you learn anatomy? I’ve been drawing for years, and one thing I really want to improve on is my understanding in that area. More for speed’s sake than anything else because I can usually make a pretty good pose, it just takes an hour of agonizing. Since you’ve said you’re making a webcomic I assume that’s something you’ve overcome to a certain extent. It’s easy to find beginner anatomy tutorials but you seem really good, so how did you learn? Did you teach yourself?
im mostly self taught, i drew alot of stuff like this when i was a kid
then i went to uni for art (and cs and game design) and did a little bit of this stuff.
my program was mostly just like. thinking about art and meaning making and cough grant writing cough
but yeah, it still takes me a long time to come up with poses and make them feel natural and interesting, and thats why the comic only gets like 4 pages a month ahahahah
i also have always used references and will always use references, i love looking at stuff, but understanding what you’re looking at helps a lot

Rendering practice. Cooler shades just happens to be easier for me to work with, that and I figured out how to do it in black and white first then play with layer filters.
This really allowed me to focus on shades rather than color, so getting in those extra details that I would've missed is refreshing.
Leif was also a good subject since I was already in the mood to draw bugs, he has a nice mixture of textures.
