strap in folks it's time for another neopets drama update

some background reading before we begin: back when neopets wanted to introduce customisation (i.e. dressing up your pet) in 2007, they decided to 'convert' all existing pet art to align with a rigid body structure, rather than all having unique poses. it was just not feasible to create new pieces of art for hundreds of different pet poses every single time they released a new clothing them

customisation had been highly requested up until this point. however, the conversion was NOT popular. in some cases, particularly for basic colours, the change wasn't huge, but in other cases.... uh....

you get the idea. the more expensive colours like plushie, faerie, grey, royal and darigan got the worst of it because they had the more unique poses pre-conversion, and therefore it was largely agreed that the change to the stiff 'samey', frankly kinda goofy converted look did not look great

most users did not get a choice in having their neopet converted and it was done automatically, but if you had one of these colours where the change was huge, you were given the choice of converting or retaining the old pose (but not having the option to customise your pet). those pets that retained the old, pre-conversion poses are therefore referred to as 'unconverted', or UC for short

once a pet is converted, there's no returning to UC. you also couldn't create UC pets anymore, making UCs a limited resource that would only increase in value with time, particularly as people abandon their pets, leave the site, get frozen, etc.

i could write an entire dissertation on the drama that UC pets have caused for the pet trading economy, the neopet account black market, and general retention of the userbase, but to sum it up, people REALLY want UC pets. they are the single most coveted status symbol on the site

we skip forward now to 2023

the neopets team are planning to introduce UC pets back to the site, so that people will be able to create their own UC pets again for the first time post-converstion (legally at least)

they drip feed bits of information over the year about what this will look like. the main points are

changing a pet to UC will be done via some kind of item bought with neocash, the premium currency on neopets that you need to spend real money to get

putting this item on your pet will give it the UC art style appearance

so. not much really known. but expected release is set for january 2024

yesterday, they hosted an AMA focusing on the new UC pet system and how this was going to work. noticeably absent is any explanation of how much this is actually going to cost and whether it is going to involve any kind of gatcha mechanic, so that's causing our first lot of concern

second lot of drama is that the new UCs aren't actually going to be COMPLETELY the same as the old art, as they're making some small changes for style consistency, see below (old on top, new below):

the biggest drama, however, comes from how they're dealing with the 'original' UC pets. ALL pets will be getting forcibly converted on the 23rd, with anyone who has a pet that is already an original UC immediately receiving the UC neocash item. there's mention of possibly some kind of trophy or badge recognition for particularly old pets, but it's vague, and generally seems like it won't be possible to distinguish between the original UCs and these new ones

the people who already have OCs are not happy about this

people are allegedly pounding their pets, cancelling their premium, and quitting the site in protest. the boards are flooded with people complaining about the changes and laughing at the downfall of the 'neo-elite' in equal measure

it's t-minus 5 days until the second great conversion goes live. let's all pray for our souls

Psychology / Literature / Fashion Design

He’d study psychology because he already messes with people’s minds, so why not get paid for it? Bonus: He’d ace every class without studying. He’d also dabble in literature (especially dark romance and horror) and probably fashion, because the man knows how to dress.

Kanato Sakamaki:

Mortuary Science / Fine Arts / Religious Studies

Kanato would be obsessed with death—not the violent kind, but the ritualistic, Victorian kind. Think embalming, mourning jewelry, grave culture. He’d be that creepy but talented art student who paints portraits using ash or blood. He’d also take Religious Studies to rip apart human doctrines and find contradictions. His final art project would be a life-sized wax cathedral of his family—no one would survive the critique.

Ayato Sakamaki:

Sports Science / Kinesiology / Culinary Arts (Secretly)

Outwardly, he’s all about proving his strength. He’d major in something sports-adjacent to keep his “Ore-sama” title relevant. But here’s the secret: Ayato likes food. If someone encouraged it, he'd double in culinary arts, probably excelling in bizarre blood-based recipes he’ll never admit are actually brilliant.

Subaru Sakamaki:

Architecture / Engineering / Environmental Science

Subaru wants to build and break things in equal measure. His talent for destruction could be channeled into construction and design, especially if he could work in remote, peaceful environments. He’d build quiet homes, gothic chapels, or ruins that serve as personal sanctuaries. Subaru would also do well in environmental science, wanting to learn how to stop messing up the world—even if he thinks he’s a monster himself. Would it be wrong if I said he would build and detail cars....

Ruki – Library Sciences / Literature / Sociology

Ruki is naturally academic and socially aware. He’d probably pursue something like library sciences to surround himself with knowledge or sociology to better understand human systems. His thesis would compare how vampire clans mirror human class struggle. He’d probably write vampire Marxist essays in his spare time and start a quiet revolution in a reading room.

Kou Mukami:

Marketing / Performing Arts / Media Studies

Kou would lean into what he already excels at: celebrity branding and manipulation. He’d study marketing, PR, or media psychology and ace everything about public image, parasocial relationships, and emotional contagion. He’d also dominate any performing arts program, even if he rarely attended class. His final project would be a viral campaign with a hidden vampire message. And it would work.

Yuma Mukami:

Agriculture / Botany / Culinary Science

Yuma would absolutely major in agriculture, environmental sustainability, or urban farming. He’d be top of his class without trying, running the greenhouse like a king and teaching the professors. He might also sneak in a minor in culinary science, because what good is farming if you can’t cook the harvest? He’d use food as peace, protection, and protest.

Azusa… baby angel. He’d major in social work, with a focus on trauma recovery. He might also study art therapy or nonverbal communication. He’d create a peaceful space where people learn to speak through creation, not pain. He’d use his past to help others heal, not despite it.

Ancient History / Genetics / Theoretical Physics

Carla, as a Founding Ancestor, would go for pure intellectual domination. He’d study ancient civilizations, bloodline inheritance, and cosmological decay. He’d speak in full academic riddles. Professors would both fear and admire him. He’d correct textbooks mid-lecture. Oh—and he’d ace vampire biology because he wrote the rules.

Shin Tsukinami:

Criminology / Mythology / Physical Education

Shin would major in criminology—he wants to understand chaos, not just cause it. He’d also do well in mythology and comparative religions, especially ancient wolf gods and primal deities. His athletic side would push him into P.E. or martial arts programs, where he dominates every match and becomes legend.

I inarguably had two big professional accomplishments this year (PhD, tenure track job), but man, it mostly just feels like I survived them rather than actually accomplishing them. I know both of those things, especially together, are a Big Deal, but honestly it didn't super feel like it at the time because I was really emotionally fraught about the job offer (this is why I spent a month crying back in spring; I do like the job and the other members of my department, but I really, really did not want to move to SD) and the dissertation, as much as I love my topic, was extremely chaotic near the end. I don't think I said this here, but my advisor signed off on it in July and then I didn't hear from her again until September, which was really rough for me to deal with emotionally. also I moved cross-country, that was also an ordeal. I feel like I've been running behind on everything all year long, dropping balls left and right -- in spring I taught two classes at one institution, TAed a class at another institution, tutored at the Writing Center, was on the academic job market, had four campus visits, worked on my dissertation, and got one job offer; in summer I taught two classes, finished my dissertation, graduated with my PhD, moved cross-country, and started at my new institution a week after I'd turned in grades for my old one; in fall I taught three classes, presented at one conference, went to NYCC, and hung on by my fingernails. I didn't finish Home and in December I made my monthly word count goal for the first time since July. (this year's total (fiction) word count is probably around the 80K+ mark, but that's an estimate; I'm not going to check.) I haven't been on a real actual vacation in several years, I haven't finished a fanfic since 2022, and I'm probably on the edge of a minor nervous breakdown. but like. professionally I was successful by academia standards.

favorite vacation you've ever taken: County Clare, Ireland. We visited friends living there. One of them was writing his dissertation about Irish tourism of music and it's affect on small communities and had been really embraced by the small village. It was pretty rural but also near the Cliffs of Moher which are freaking regal. We also visited one of the Aran islands, Innis Oirr (Innisheer). Just amazing. Then we took an overnight trip to Galway, which was also fun. I never wanted to come home. I cried all the time because it was so beautiful. It was also my first time out of the country and I was a baby of 24. Our daughter's middle name is Clare in honor of County Clare. It meant that much.

how many alarms do you set for the morning? Two. I set two alarms every time I set an alarm no matter what time of day. Two alarms, sometimes three. Why yes I have an anxiety disorder, why do you ask?

do you have a skincare routine? I'm trying to use a face wash from Kiehls but usually I just put warm water on a washcloth and wipe it on my face. I can't really do anything to it or it gets mad. No multilevel routines, no makeup, no face masks. Naked.

do you prefer movies or television? TV! So much creative stuff on tv. I've always liked TV. I think I like episodes and how they can be really contained. From this love I know that a 12 episode arc has Important Episodes during episodes 3, 6, and 10. If it's a shorter episode arc, it's whatever is the one before the last two.

which grocery store do you shop at most often? We are so needlessly complicated! Hahaha We have a couple box subscriptions (misfits market and a local farms basket). There's a world market here with wild amounts of produce, spices, etc where we get a lot of stuff. Then Costco. But if we need spaghetti sauce or vegan cheese and randoms we go to Publix, where we also get all 800000000 of our medications filled so we are there every couple weeks.

least favorite chore? I hate dishes until I'm actually doing them and then I'm like "this isn't so bad."

you have to listen to one musical artist for the rest of your life, and only one artist. who do you pick? So bands don't count? Because I'd pick Dark Dark Dark in a heartbeat. No? Okay. Then I'll pick PJ Harvey. Endlessly interesting and has an impressive catalogue.

It has been five months of tumult – I feel uprooted and a mess. It’s probably longer since I wrote an update of sorts, so here you go:

I submitted my dissertation (for which I got an A!), completed my master’s, received an award for best diss in my major (!) and started a PhD. The PhD somehow is the only thing going well in my life. I’m on track with my courses, my supervisor is amazing, I receive enough funding, I have a tentative research topic, my colleagues are great fun. It’s also an uncertain environment where there’s no given plan to succeed, which doesn’t suit me the best. Creating rigor and structure is the way I’ve been able to not lose my mind. I’m afraid of not being able to publish good quality research, of not being a great teacher, of struggling in the job market because I chose a lower ranked university. I try not to think about it, but the doubts have accompanied me throughout the semester. I feel like I’ve left behind all of my hobbies – not that I don’t have free time, but I spend a lot of it hanging out with my colleagues/friends. I haven’t read much, I haven’t gone climbing, I haven’t gone hiking as frequently as I’d like, and I don’t have much outside of work. This has to change.

I also started therapy over the summer. I had been ready for a while, but by then I had a concrete idea of what I wanted to work on & I had found a psychotherapist I thought was a great fit (and she is!). I’m not sure why I hadn’t considered online counselling before (NOT the scam that is BetterHelp; there’s plenty of qualified therapists that counsel online), but it gave me the possibility to choose among many options and find someone that understood narcissistic abuse and did EMDR. It’s good. It helps. It has also opened a flood of things I need to think about.

Among all of this mess, I broke up with my boyfriend. I’m proud of my choice, but I find being single difficult, as I give a lot of importance to relationships because I hope for my partner to provide me with the love and affection I didn’t receive throughout my life. I want to be able to give myself that love – and eventually be in a relationship, but one that fits with what I value: a strong emotional connection, mutual commitment to a future together, effort. I’m not there yet.

In all of this, writing my thoughts down has help incredibly. I’ve reverted back to pen and paper, which I can’t recommend enough. It’s freeing.
