The tiny morsel of suffering wasn't meant to be that tiny

"Stay the night," Nancy asked sweetly as she kicked her shoes off her feet and lay in bed. Robin sighed, head dropping to her chest before she looked up.
"I'm not going to stay the night." she deadpanned.
"Please, I want you to stay the night," Nancy whined, petulant. Robin sat in her desk chair and pulled her knee to her chest.
"I'm not going to stay the night, Nancy. You're going to want to do more than sleep, and I don't want that right now," she explained with a pained gaze.
"No… I just don't want to be alone." Nancy reasoned, "And my bed's plenty big, and I'm really, really small." she scooched herself as close to the wall as she could to demonstrate.
"You're also really, really drunk. And you just went to your first lesbian bar, and you got to make out with a pretty girl, and you're going to want to kiss me."
Well… Robin wasn't wrong.
"And if you kiss me, that will make things extremely awkward between us. So no, I will not be staying the night. But. I will come back."
"Promise?" Nancy asked, batting her lashes. Robin smiled a little sadly and leaned down to tousle her hair.
"Yeah. Want me to take the wagon back with me to Wellesley?"
"Please." Robin's hand lingered in Nancy's mussed curls before she sighed, turning around and grabbing a cup from the nightstand. She left the room for a moment, then returned and set the cup full of water on the nightstand. Next, she dug around in Nancy's purse and set two Aspirin next to it.
"Try to choke that down before you pass out," she said softly before turning and opening the door to leave.
"I had a fun time tonight, Nancy. I'll see you soon." Nancy had already drifted to sleep, her soft snores blowing the hair from her face.
-
The following day Nancy called Robin first thing, full of nerves.
"I didn't do anything stupid last night, did I?" She winced as she said it and was only further concerned by a wry bark of laughter from the other end of the line.
"Luckily for you, I was mostly sober, and so no. I didn't let you do anything too stupid last night. Your attempts to seduce me were valiant but ultimately unsuccessful." Robin says with a laugh that almost sounds humorous.
"Oh god, please tell me I didn't do something too embarrassing." she covered her face and grimaced into the receiver.
"You asked me to sleep with you."
"Nooo"
"You thought you were being pretty coy about it too." she can hear the laughter coming back to Robin's voice, making her smile, "Tried to trick me into a sleepover. You said your bed was big enough for two." Nancy winces harder and resolves to never get drunk ever again. "Don't be too hard on yourself, Nancy. I've had worse crushes. You'll get over it." she says offhandedly as if everyone in the world knew that Nancy had been pining after her and had all come to a conclusion that, no, Robin would never date Nancy after all. She could have had her chance, but she blew it, and it was simply too late.
Her heart fell into her stomach.
"Nance?" She was snapped out of her trance and frowned.
"Do I have to?" she asked quietly, "Do I have to get over it?" She heard a long sigh on the other end of the line and imagined that Robin was rubbing her temples with one hand.
"I'd rather talk about that face to face, Nance."

Marriage law AU AU 👀
god i SWEAR i'm going to update this before my birthday or else y'all are allowed to like. stone me.
i think i've had the start of this chapter written for. like over six months. it's so pathetic. but i got an idea from a grey's anatomy scene that i think i may reconfigure for my own means, so we have some inspiration!!
there are Things coming up tho:
tommy finds out
joel gets injured (minorly)
tess and maria have a confrontation
ellie finally comes ~home with tess and ian
ellie and joel finally talk
the way this fic is divided into my head is three major parts, and last chapter ended part one, so we're in part two of three. part two has a LOT of shit happen in it, and i don't wanna spoil too much, but once we start cookin' it's gonna be a wild ride.
