Even though D:OS2 romances were a bit brief, I remember how impressed I was with Fane's character and how his romance was handled. So, when I learned that Stephen Rooney was Astarion's writer, I knew that we were in for something amazing.

BTW, Astarion's evil ending kinda resonates with Fane's evil ending if you think of it. Both technically get what they wanted (at the cost of others' wellbeing), both treat the romanced MC as their possession, not their equal, both are "happy", but in the creepiest and most unhealthy way possible.

Astarion's evil ending certainly means starting a new cycle of violence and humiliation. I've read theories that "evil Astarion and Tav can still be happy together, he'll just have to make them a full vampire too", but back then, I had my huge press "X" to doubt moment. Astarion and Tav becoming a happy vampire couple wasn't possible. At least, not in this setting. Of course, there is a chance for a DnD vampire to preserve their humanity and ability to love (one of the Hellriders was an involuntarily turned vampire, who fought for his soul through self-discipline, good gods' favor, and limited blood consumption). But that's not Astarion's case.

Him becoming a full vampire meant giving up on everything his non-vampire self loved: sunlight, the warmth of other person's touch, the need for acceptance. It meant losing understanding of why this was so important to him. So, of course, this version of him won't be seeing any reason for Tav to be his equal. Why give someone so much power when you can ensure they will adore you forever just by ordering them to do so? It's better. It's safer. So, technically, he isn't free: he still builds his world around his paranoia, fear of losing control, and thirst for power. But now Tav and many other unfortunate folk are stuck with him until someone else comes to either break the cycle or start it anew. This is incredibly dark, and I applaud Stephen for not pulling any punches.

Nonnie, you said it so perfectly. I was surprised that there was no filter at all, the dark future of Astarion (and Tav if they stay) is not even hinted at, it's obvious. Simps can have the evil sexy man who degrades them but yes, this is how they wanted it, right? Some of them already whine that they wanted to be vampire happy evil couple, oh cry me a river. I said several times in the past that it's not going to happen, this is not Twilight and they know nothing about DnD vampires. Anyway, the good ending for him gives me fuzzies and I can't even express in words how much I love it. I found out that you CAN actually offer to help him to walk in the sun again!

Yeah, this is one reason I stay away from meta discussions on the subreddit now. I'd be such a killjoy lmao.

Because this is part of the "excitement -> backlash -> backlash to the backlash -> excitement for the backlash's backlash, etc." loop that happens on social media. People that aren't fans of X (in this case, Shadowheart) eventually feel like they have to speak up. Then it goes round and round until we all die.

It's a weird cycle, but it happens to every character. In a year's time, there's gonna be some fucking absurd fandom wank, I guarantee it. There's already the hilarious Halsin guys. Give it time and we'll have the Lae'zel brigades (anti- and pro-) beating the shit out of each other in the replies and an eternal war between the Shadowheart simps and haters.

Long ramble ahead to actually talk about the comment, so here's a read more.

The fight made sense to me. But, to dig into... well, everything else before that.

Being cruel to a githyanki? I feel that some folks in the BG3 fandom need to learn what the githyanki are and remember who Lae'zel is. The githyanki are not a sympathetic people, at least not anymore. They're an actual empire trying to expand via all the hallmarks of traditional imperialism. They are slavers and raiders almost to the man, and there is factual evidence of them wanting to rebuild a great empire that spans realms. Calling them fascist frog people is only, like, barely a joke. Lae'zel, at the beginning of the game, is a quintessential brainwashed child of a fascist regime.

Not having more githzerai in the game, other than a fucking brain and, arguably, the gith monks you fight, really kneecapped people's understanding of the -yanki. I know there's a whole thing about alignment, but the githyanki are almost the poster children of Lawful Evil.

Stealing from them and being worried about the fallout of that is one of the most normal reactions possible lmao. Shadowheart's a Sharran that doesn't trust any of her companions. Why should she just play along?

And not having remorse? I don't know, but I'm an admittedly vindictive and petty person and I am very, very loathe to forgive people if they've slighted me. And I'm not even dealing with possible ceremorphosis! So, I guess I get where Shadowheart is coming from and it never struck me as even remotely strange for her to require a lot of work to even trust Lae'zel, let alone "bury the hatchet."

It's also perfectly in keeping with Shadowheart's character, especially that early on, to not respect an honorable duel and instead try to kill Lae'zel while she has the chance.

Mix this with Shadowheart starting as a not-at-all-trusting person? I mean, I don't know. It's just a tastes thing. I'd have been confused if everyone in camp was just cool with Lae'zel, which after a point they are. I don't really buy that some of the others would put up with her, but I like her character enough to let it slide and enjoy what's in the game.

And just let a character have negative traits, flaws, whatever! The companions are great for that reason!

Plus, she's a literal abuse victim. Compassion is in some ways a skill, and a lot of people lack it.

My first Tulia let Watcher X go, just because she was my first DS!Agent and most of her choices were driven by being sort of comically evil, but this time around, I am being a little more careful about her choices in terms of her actual motivations (which, to be fair, I didn't really know when I played her the first time around, since all I had in my head for her was tol murder machine hurr durr and then she started simping at Zhorrid)

but anyway

This time she shanked Watcher X. While it was tempting to get Dirt on some folks who had annoyed her, Tulia's loyalty (at the moment, anyway), is primarily to Intelligence and she has a lot of faith in Intelligence as an Agency. 100%, her true loyalty is to herself and to staying alive at all costs, but she did the math on it and decided that the risk that he's a fucking liar far outweighed any possibility of him having good information (especially if his information might lead her to have an Existential Crisis about why she's doing what she's doing).

sanji is . arguably the most human of all the straw hats.. which is interesting bc he is also the only one who was supposed to be inhuman. ofc i think theyre all very human but sanji has the most moments where i can relate to him. the sanuso fic i was reading yesterday... he was so full of shame... and they wrote him hiding behind his hair.. and i felt so intensely SEEN by that. like oh my god he is ME i do all these things.. i find that my comfort characters are usually... ones who suffer a lot. i love suffering. in media.

i love that sanji is arguably the most emotional of the group (aside from franky or chopper, but for them its just played for laughs) and that overemotional/low self esteem part is exactly what makes him so relatable. i actually really appreciate that oda gave that trait to a male character. sanji cries a lot and is overemotional and kind of hysteric sometimes jdvbvfjdk so im glad they didnt make it like nami or robin who was like that stereotype. their signature ability is inhaling their enemies and absorbing their powers, aka the copy ability.

in the process they get cute lil hats (x) (x)

they’re a very cheerful, energetic and kindhearted sweetheart who loves strawberry shortcake, eating and sleeping.

they also love to sing but their voice is so terrible it’s a basically a superweapon.

in spite of their youth and cute appearance they’re EXTREMELY powerful. they’re also kind of heavily implied to be an incarnation of an ancient elder god of destruction, but that’s neither here nor there.

headcanons: has an energy drink addiction, able and willing to fall asleep everywhere and under p much any circumstance, the concept of a “best friend” stresses them out immensely because the thought of singing out only one is just depressing to them

king dedede:

he’s greedy and and capricious and petty but aside from the first game + Revenge of the King he’s not really genuinely evil for the most part, and in recent is mostly decently heroic/an ally

“self-designated” “”king”” of dreamland, i.e. just some rando who showed up one day and the people kind of took it in stride because This Might As Well Happen.

the game stresses regularly that he has no legitimate right to rule, he just kind of does because dreamlanders are extremely politically apathetic, and also just fairly apathetic in general

the folks he rules over love the dude though

he also gets possessed a lot so the devs have an excuse to make you fight him. dedede constantly averts the Villain Forget To Level Grind trope though, so his boss battles are both a ton of fun and offer something new in every game

headcanons: is a skilled engineer and has scopophobia from his rocky history with possession. has unofficially adopted the gals from crystal shards (ado + ribbon)

meta knight:

a masked swordsman (swordsperson? idk his gender is ambiguous in japanese but he’s referred to as masc terms in both so).

he usually takes on a “mysterious older rival / mentor / anti-hero” role, but he’s generally fairly helpful + force for good more than anything.

he abides by a strict code of honour and is constantly honing his ability in combat.

is the same species as kirby under his mask. this is “”revealed”” in every game in which he’s a boss, where his mask breaks when you defeat him

goes to ridiculous lengths to preserve his image as a Stoic Mysterious Warrior (e.g. hiding his adorable face 24/7 and keeping his love of sweets a dire secret)

headcanons: his eyes glow, kind of an insomniac, drinks coffee with way too much sugar and cream, gets sick easily (in the games he’s usually kind of a glass cannon)

bandana dee:

a waddle dee (the most common mook enemy in the game) with a bandana and a spear. like perry the platypus

loyal right-hand servant of king dedede, ish.

is desperate to prove himself and stand out among his kind as a hero and a warrior

his first appearance was a brief one in a sub-game and since that point he’s appeared in plenty of other games since then, to the point of being a playable character in many of them

really loves apple juice

people really want him in smash because there’s only three kirby reps. those people are right.

headcanons: is a really good cook, fairly versatile with numerous weapons, really hates rainy weather

magolor (laid-back spacefaring catboy wizard, twist villain of RTDL who’s trying to clean up his act and redeem himself to... interesting results)

taranza (clumsy, pretentious spider mage-druid with a bowlcut, he wasn’t really evil just a simp. you never fight him directly in his debut game bc he freaks out and calls for his not-gf)

susie (capitalist e-girl office lady with a mech and a gun, cute and polite but also the kind of person who says stuff like “i’m not racist but-”)

adeleine/ado (friendly human painter girl who got possessed by eyeball demons in her debut game, in the kirby verse the earth was rendered uninhabitable by an apocalyptic ice age so she’s pretty much the only actual human we see)

ribbon (sweet lil alien fairy with a gun made of shiny rocks)

daroach (gentlemanly rat thief dude idk i didn’t play squeak squad)

+ many others i’ve missed

as for the ships thing, generally nope ;; in the entire series there are like. two or three instances of explicit romance being shown in the entire thing:

- chuchu having an unrequited crush on kirby (rip queen)

- taranza the spider mage having an unrequited crush on his childhood friend, an evil queen who got corrupted by a magic mirror (rip queen. literally this time because a child fucking murdered her with a laser)

- the only actual canon romantic relationship is kirby/ribbon. in the true ending of Crystal Shards after they fight a giant blood-spurting eyeball kirby gets a victory smooch on the cheek. nblw rights.

(though worth noting that in kf2 meta knight and dedede are referred to as “sworn partners” with an enduring bond that strengthens their combat ability and reach out to hold each other’s hands before collapsing, which is,,,, Hmmm)
