When you fuck with the youtube music algorithm long enough, it's useful (discovering opal ocean, chinchilla, black pumas, etc) and entertaining (unexpectedly being teleported back to high school when smashmouth's flo pops up, realizing the marcus miller version of higher ground is a stevie wonder cover*) and, at times, the risk of creating a sudden bluescreen is absurdly hazardous.
Such as tonight, when i was about 2/3 the way through this song
youtube
when the combo of it plus the ambient xcom noises and the more acute noises of sierra gnawing on the mini-mjølnir and the clunking of the dryer abruptly tripped all the overstimulate-audio switches in my brain, so i skipped it.
Algorithm gave me this next, followed by several other Hu songs
youtube
and then this, which was a little heavier than i was vibing with tonight, but i had zucchini all over my hands and no easy way to skip to next without zucchinifying my phone or my earbuds.
youtube
All fine, right. So why the post, M? This was the next thing to play:
youtube
Like. Youtube. Buddy. I know i listened to like three phish albums on wednesday and yesterday was a lot of andy allo and leikeli47 and frank ocean and tuesday was, like, seventeen repeats of the great gate of kiev and jupiter the bringer of jollity and tine ting helseth's recording of hummel's fuck this trumpet in particular concerto in e flat and also abdelazer's rondeau from empire brass and bill kuhlman (listen tuesday was A Day, okay, monday was not so bad and we paid for it with tuesday) and i understand that might make it difficult to accurately predict what i might next want to hear. But.
Going from italian gothic metal to swedish folktronica is certainly A Choice. Not one i would recommend. I would also especially not recommend timing it in such a way that you are in the middle of dealing with hot oil and moist vegetables, because the resulting bluescreen might lead to dumping the entire bowl of shredded zucchini directly into the pan from somewhat higher elevation than desired.
In entirely unrelated news, everything to the left of my stove and the floor is very very clean now.
I'm adding this one in here because though it was not involved in today's youtube shenanigans, it is a fucking excellent song.
youtube
(I was at the concert this recording is from, and it is one of my most favorite memories of college. I had been having an absolutely shit day, decided i absolutely could not deal with one of my classes that day and went to the masterclass the empire brass was offering instead- that was a small mood-booster, but the actual concert was just...joyful. Instantly obliterated any and all of the crappiness from that day. It's still pretty far up there on my most favorite concerts. I will always recommend this album to people who like brass arrangements or organ or are unable to escape my general vicinity. or tumblr.)
*i could hear my mother declaiming 'A HOLE in your eduCATION!' from 800mi away. I know, mom. I know.
#i had one musician roommate at the time and one nonmusician roommate#it had been at least partially Roommate Shenanigans making the day shitty and i remember floating back to my dorm room#and overhearing the nonmusician roomie going 'did you and m like talk or something because she's so...happy suddenly'#and music roomie was like 'no she went to the concert tonight' and nonmusic roomie was like '...and...'#music roomie was just like idk what's confusing i answered your question already#this is why i want to find a counsellor who understands music and emotion like#i desperately want to be able to be like (shows playlist) and have them get it#like 'u ok babe you've had the last movement of saint saens organ symphony on repeat for like three days' sort of a vibe#Youtube

Day 187 - Fast & Slow
Calories: 1620
Today was strangely casual for a Monday. I tackled work completely on-time and handled callers with ease. I even did an errand just barely in time during my first break. Things got a bit hectic towards the end, but it was under control.
Writing for today:
I am deeply tempted to put this off again, but that would be dishonest. There is nothing hampering my ability to write tonight except for a bit of sleepiness, and I can't sleep yet anyway.
Today I just did XCOM 2. Missions are going well, and I have a competent sniper that has brought a lot of killing power to those train missions. You don't have to worry about activating more enemies if you don't have to advance.
Fallout 4 is feeling a bit less fun, but I don't think I'm going to bounce off of it this time. Sim Settlements 2 always slumps right after the HQ gets going, because there isn't much to do except expand settlement industries to prepare for the big upgrades.
Today I got up on time, and didn't think anything of it. It didn't even hit me until halfway through my shift that this was the first Monday in a long time that I wasn't late to. My energy really tanked after work, though. Overall, today felt okay.

The best Steam strategy games are on sale, with one obvious omission
The highly divisive Total War Warhammer 3 is nowhere to be found, while earlier titles in the series are listed as being a part of the Steam Strategy Fest despite also not having any discounts to speak of. This is all part of a massive Steam sale that is currently taking place on the Valve platform, discounting some truly phenomenal strategy games. Many people are confused by the growing outrage regarding the Total War Warhammer 3 DLC pricing issue. In case you missed it, the Total War Warhammer 3 Shadows of Change DLC marks the start of a DLC price increase for the game, and players aren’t happy. Creative Assembly has addressed the price increase, but this hasn’t stopped a Total War Warhammer 3 review bombing from users on Steam. Now, Steam Strategy Fest is running from Monday, August 28 to Monday, September 4, and it appears that Warhammer 3 was listed in the festival, but it isn’t on sale. As of publication, it looks like Warhammer 3 has been removed from the list of games in the strategy game festival (initially spotted by Len on Twitter), but previous games Warhammer 1 and 2 are still listed, despite also not being on sale. Even so, there is actually an array of really great strategy games up for grabs, so we’ve put a list together of our favorites alongside the savings you can expect when making purchases on Steam. Steam strategy game sale - Stellaris is 70% at $11.99 / £10.49 - Civilization 6 is 90% at $5.99 / £4.99 - Anno 1800 is 70% at $14.99 / £12.49 - Age of Empires 4 is 50% off at $14.99 / £17.49 - Victoria 3 is 30% off at $34.99 / £29.39 - Frostpunk is 80% off at $5.99 / £4.99 - XCOM 2 is 90% off at $5.99 / £3.49 There’s plenty more to enjoy in the Steam sale too, as Valve has broken it up into categories like turn-based strategy games, real-time, tower defense, and even cities and settlements, so if you have a specific sub-genre of strategy game you love the most, you can easily find something cheap to your liking in the sale. Whatever your taste, we’ve also got a breakdown of the best grand strategy games currently available on PC, so it’s definitely worth seeing if they’re available on sale right now. Or you can check out the best Warhammer games instead, with many of these looped into the Steam sale too. Read the full article

Newfound Friendships
He is not sure how long they can spend with the Skirmishers. They are generous with their help, but Cecily is clearly terrified of them, and he and Ines don’t trust them enough to help dispel her fears. Still, Tatiana needs to recover, and only time will help that.
She surprises everyone by dragging herself to her feet after only a week at the new camp. Tatiana wobbles, almost collapses, then seems to steady herself. The steadiness lasts for only a moment though, and fortunately Betos is close enough to her to run and catch her.
“You should still be resting,” Betos scolds lightly. She tries to nudge Tatiana back towards her cot.
Tatiana manages to hold her ground, even in her weakened state. “I’m fine,” she insists. She takes a second to catch her breath, then tries to walk forward. “I want to see my daughter.”
Betos keeps a hold of her, helping her to keep her balance, but she does not try to dissuade her from her goal. “You will heal faster if you rest,” she says lightly.
“Hasn’t been working the past few days,” Tatiana retorts. They spot Cecily and John playing together near the edge of camp, with Ines nearby talking with Mox. She pushes herself a bit harder, almost stumbling again if it weren’t for Betos’s help.
“I will ask Bejj to examine you again, if you’d like.”
“No, I don’t-” Tatiana cuts herself off before completing her thought. She takes a moment to recollect, then starts again. “I felt the same way waking up today as I did the past two days. I don’t think laying down any longer will help.”
They stop a few feet away the others. Betos looks at her, and for just a split second Tatiana has to hide her own blatant distrust of her kind. “If you have truly reached a plateau in your recovery here, I may know where you can receive additional help,” she explains quietly. “But I would rather not let you leave until you can walk on your own again.”
“And if I insist?”
“Then I would hope you listen to your friends,” she retorts, glancing pointedly at John.
Tatiana glances at him to catch his own worried look, then sighs. “Point taken.”
Betos smiles at her then takes a step back, still keeping one hand on her arm just in case. Once it’s clear she can balance long enough for the moment, she lets go. “Don’t strain yourself,” she warns.
Tatiana offers her a faint smile in return. Without another word, she turns to the others and takes a few careful steps forward. “Cecilka!” she calls.
Betos watches as the girl takes off and tackles her mother as best she can. She shakes her head in amusement and leaves them be.
They find themselves sitting across from Betos in her tent almost a week later. Tatiana does not look much better than a few days prior, but she wasn’t wobbling while trying to stand anymore.
“Go south far enough and you will eventually run into the Templar’s territory,” Betos explains, pointing on a map. “From there you will find one of their bases.”
Tatiana and John stare blankly at her. “You can’t tell us where it is exactly?” he asks.
“I don’t know its exact location.”
“Then how are we supposed to find the Templars?” Tatiana snaps.
Betos looks at her again, her gaze piercing though into her core. “They will find you,” she says.
Tatiana shifts uncomfortably at the certainty in her voice. “And you’re sure they can heal me?”
“Yes. On the odd occasion, some of their members have healed our own. Others have witnessed them healing other humans, too,” she assures.
Tatiana looks at John, and he nods slightly. “We’ll try our luck,” he says, looking at Betos once more. “Thank you for your help.”
The four of them set off the next day to the south after some almost reluctant goodbyes and promises to help each other where they could.
True to Betos’s word, the Templars find them. Two of them appear on a ledge above them, and after some brief introductions, they have no qualms about bringing them to their hideout.
Tatiana hopes that it is John and Ines’s XCOM connections that make them seem almost too eager to bring them back. Betos’s piercing gaze lingers in the back of her mind, but she follows regardless.
They reach the base by nightfall, a building that appeared to have once been some sort of resort that had been half destroyed. As they approach, they spot a girl a few years older than Cecily pestering an older man carrying a baby.
More importantly, the girl spots them. “Dad!” she shouts, running to meet them and wrapping her arms around one of the templars’ waist. He pats her head a bit awkwardly. After a moment, the girl steps back and takes a look at the four of them. Eventually her gaze locks onto Cecily, simultaneously eager and a bit nervous. “Hi,” she says. “I’m Sophie.”
Cecily glances up at her mother, and she offers her a few quiet words of encouragement. “I’m Cecily,” she manages.
Bill urges his daughter back over to the other man so that they can continue into the building. “Sorry about that,” he says, glancing at Tatiana.
“Nothing to be sorry about,” she assures. “I didn’t expect to run into many kids out traveling. It’ll be good for her to play with someone closer to her own age.”
“Good for Sophie, too,” the templar says.
“Maybe we’ll stay here for a bit longer, for them,” John muses, glancing down at Cecily who was still practically clinging to Tatiana’s hand.
Tatiana gives her hand a squeeze in assurance, then shrugs. “We’ll see.”

Dawn of Christmas (2013)
Despite finishing this pose before Christmas Eve (which was my intended target), I was unable to edit it in time and have it fully completed. Though the festive year has passed us, hopefully this now edited version will fill you with one last little bit of Christmas spirit! ;P
(Also, that's Saren behind the Joker, not Garrus...I can't see why people would think it's Garrus hah. Since when did Garrus have blue glowing eyes? :V )

A Toast to the Crowd
Tldr: I have to stop streaming for a while with little certainty of when or if I come back. I explain why and how and say goodbye just in case. We’ve known for a while that this was coming - and now it’s time. Effective immediately the stream is on ice for an indefinite amount of time. For the longest time I was able to stream for two reasons - my awesome and very generous audience on one hand, grosserdad, the coolest dad out there ever, on the other. But while my father kept the door open so more people could come in, it slowly over time became clear that the sprint would turn into a marathon - which then eventually turned into an entire expedition. When I originally came to him I said that I expected the whole thing to take up to two years to get going without further help from his side, which was of course a little optimistic, but even after four years when I started talking to him about how I didnt want to sit on his wallet anymore, he still responded “at least do one more year”. I am eternally grateful to him for allowing me to try this incredibly exciting experiment. However then Corona came in and it became harder and more unpredictable for my dad too, we knew that with only an average of 200 dollars a month I wouldnt be able to keep going the moment his support ended. I didn’t want to take more from the viewers that I already had, I just needed more and the numbers kept stagnating. Maybe it would have been better if I had kept a big “newest donation” banner on screen, or if I had exclusively streamed XCOM or League of Legends or whatever, but I can say without hesitation that I created exactly the content I myself would have wanted to watch. And it’s alright if there isn’t enough demand for that out there. WHY NOW? Because I have my first serious job interview on Monday, 10 am. I expect they will take me. Even if they don’t, I could maybe dodge a few more and keep streaming with unemployment benefits for a while, but I don’t want to do that. I gave the stream almost 5 years, it’s unlikely that another month or two are suddenly going to triple my average viewer numbers - and even if they would, for how long? Instead the plan for the moment is to get a job, work, have a sleep schedule that works with that and then look at how tired I am when I come home. There might be occasional streams, hell, best case I will even start streaming regularly again 3-4 hours every night, but that would likely require me to only work halftime and I don’t want to make promises if I don’t know I can keep them. I have 10 bucks will this help? Thank you so very much, but the answer to that question is - not really. My audience has always been generous, but we are talking about dimensions here that require more than a one-time financial spike. You have your own life to live, your own problems to deal with and if I can’t draw large enough of an audience to support me, then it is not your job to pay for that. It worked in the past because I had grosserdad backing me up with ~400€ per month and that’s just not something that I can expect my crowd to suddenly cover on a monthly basis. So is this Goodbye then? Maybe? Pretty hard to tell at this point. I’ll start working, I’ll get a new routine and then we will see. I’ll be around on discord just like before, the gameclub can continue, maybe we could even do a meatup next year, who knows. I might even stream every now and then just because its more fun with you guys around. But it won’t be regularly and it likely wont be for as long. I enjoyed streaming for you very much and I will never forget the thousands of hours that we shared, be it hitting on Samantha Traynor, fighting the Alien Menace or just wearing a froghat and joking about pineapple pizza. I’m sad of course, but Im also excited to finally earn more money again and not being dependent on my dad and you guys anymore. And hell, who knows. I might even get a tan. Commander Matt Gambler signing off

Minor thoughts on life
Had a long weekend as Thursday and Friday were holidays. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is also a holiday, so I could have used a vacation day but opted not to as sandwich days are generally chill and not worth using vacation. Still, coming back into the office on Monday is always shitty. I plan to spend most of today losing my mind about CW Supergirl, fyi.
Spent all four days of long weekend generally playing like 15 hours a day of P5R:
Originally played P5 NA and bought P5R KR version. The save files are not compatible so I did not get my import the save file from P5 bonus :(
I GENUINELY forgot most of what happens in P5. I think the ONLY thing I really remembered was that Makoto is my wife and that one twist about the #3 antagonist of the game. Like, I had forgotten who the “true boss” after the last palace was, lol. I mean, I am not complaining because that means I have been playing it again with much vigor but man, my memory these days is just... shot.
Every year my misanthropy grows, and at this point, P5′s brand of “human being suck” doesn’t even feel like an exaggeration or allegory, just facts. Abusive pedophiles suck. Shitface Make ___ Great Again politicians suck. Social media sucks. Society sucks.
That said, the juxtaposition of that criticism and Atlus’s own homophobia and puerile sex jokes is like... man, we ALL suck.
Am playing with Japanese VA this time (played with English VA on vanilla) and it just reminded me that the English VA’s bizarrrrrrrrrrrrrre decision to emphasize the second syllable of all the Japanese names is still so fucking weird. Yes, I understand that apparently Atlus asked the VA to do that, but they’re still wrong, it does NOT sound at all like that in Japanese.
Am at the tail end of the main game and actually have not entered the new post original endgame content, but the new characters have been eh... so far? We’ll see.
Once I am finished with P5R maybe I can finally (re)start reading Priory of the Orange Tree! Or stop being one of the three people on tumblr that have’t watched The Half of It yet!
(Or I could start playing XCOM Chimera Squad. Realistically.)

6 June - 12 June weeknotes
Monday 6 June
I’m litter picking in the park and the water seeps through and soaks my toes. There’s a cluster of vans from UK Power Networks parked down the road. Big hello to the local DNO.
Tuesday 7 June
Couldn’t resist. Picked the ripest blackcurrant. It’s much too sharp and it tastes of the weather. I love it.
At the end of the day I look in the mirror. Forgot I had mascara on. The shadows I’ve made by rubbing my eyes makes it look like I’ve never slept a night in my life.
Wednesday 8 June
Train. Twitter scroll.
Swiss Miss refers to Jessica Hische’s comment about being so fed up with social media she’s thinking of quitting and starting a newsletter. Are newsletters temporarily overshadowing blogs or signalling the death of them? Later this week, I’ll get a newsletter that links to content in another newsletter. Is this the future of writing online? Oddly private, social in secret. RSS but not?
Tune in next week for more questions people have probably answered in essay form on a blog but I’m too lazy to Google.
Newish backpack on my back as I walk through the city. The sound of the fabric creasing and uncreasing somehow strikes a familiar beat. (Although a different mix). “The heat soared to one six three” bounces round my head all the way to Liverpool Street station.
I planted some cosmos seeds at the weekend. When I get home they’re at least an inch high. I don’t think they’d even broken ground yesterday.
Thursday 9 June
The sun rose at 4.44am today.
On the train, a man in my line of sight is asleep. His lips are moving constantly. Can’t tell if he’s speaking or chewing in his dream.
At 9am I meet R for coffee. I haven’t seen, or even spoken to him in roughly 10 years. It’s so nice to see him. We worked together for a bit, way back. I wish we’d worked together more.
A good day in the office. Someone on my team has transformed in the last month or so, from someone who used to make good suggestions and then put themselves down 2 seconds later, to someone who just makes good suggestions. I’d love to think it’s all because of the feedback I fretted over before delivering, but I think it’s a team effort.
Friday 10 June
The first and only walk to the wood this week. Big news! They’ve filled in the giant pothole.
I walk around the edge of the wood. The canopy above is so dense now it blocks out the sun. This is the same route I used to take before the sun was up.
The field which used to contain the sheep now seems to contain a cow’s bum. I keep looking over as I walk, wondering where its head is and why it isn’t moving. Can a cow die partially standing - is it resting on its front knees? Finally it flicks its tail and I guess its head and the remainder of its torso is somewhere buried in the tall grass. Relief all round. (Now I’m wondering, was its head actually stuck in a bear trap? No… No? No.)
It’s such a beautiful day.
We go to a gig in the evening. Holy Scum, the support, is so loud that afterwards someone asks “what are they really like? It was too loud to hear them.” J and I talk about other gigs we’ve seen where the sound quality was poor and also too loud. He says “remember Queens of the Stone Age at Brixton?” I say sort of. I remember it being loud, but also that I slept through fifty percent of it. I do remember them playing at The Underworld though. Tiny, sweaty, energetic gig. So tightly packed that when Nick Oliveri played the last song naked I didn’t even notice. (I’ve seen louder, heavier bands, but the sound quality of most gigs is better these days.)
Saturday 11 June
Sunny. Off to Brighton to see friends. The train is packed and I stand all the way. Check Twitter before I read my book and spot a mention of XCOM 2002. 20 years ago. I was on a panel, of sorts, no doubt saying something stupid or naive about b3ta.
When I get home I’ll find unexpected post. The most beautiful quilt a friend has made and sent out of the blue. I still can’t believe it. How do we know each other? From b3ta, of course.
At the pub in Brighton I see someone from school. He said he did a postgrad course in multimedia years ago, picked up a ‘web design magazine’ and there was an interview with me. Those heady early days - I thought then I was the token woman (I was in more than one issue), but actually, better to have a woman than no woman, right? Better to try than not.

Summoners Fate roguelike still due to get a Linux build

Summoners Fate roguelike deckbuilder game has support plans for Linux with Mac and Windows PC. Thanks to further details and good news from developer D20Studios. Working to make its way onto Steam Early Access soon. Independent developers, D20Studios, are eager to announce their next game, Summoners Fate. This is a roguelike deckbuilder that plays like a traditional board game. Summoners Fate is releasing in Early Access on Monday, June 20th. But sadly only on Windows PC. However, this is good news going forward for Linux and Steam Deck support.
I do still have plans to officially support native Linux platform for the full 1.0 release, as well as the Steam Deck.
The Early Access release of Summoners Fate will officially support Mac and Windows PC. However, Linux players have reported that the game also works on Linux via Proton. Which I have personally tested with success using "GE Proton 7-17". But feel free to use GE Proton 7-18 with the Steam Demo. Since version 1.0 is a further 9-12 months away from the June 20th release. So, for Linux, the plan will be Proton support as the go-to until that full launch.
Summoners Fate Trailer
youtube
Summoners Fate is a roguelike adventure game that fuses traditional turn-based combat with card-slinging spell combat. After choosing one of the eight summoners, you must embark on a perilous quest through the multiverse. Doing so in search of hidden secrets, powerful cards, and battle changing team members. Also, you may find a mutated rabbit along the way. Deckbuilding in Summoners Fate is a unique experience, due to your cards playing like a finite resource. Upon casting a board shattering spell the card is sent to your discard pile. There is where it will stay until you greet the cosmic tortoise and eat some marshmallows, seriously. What happens when you run out of cards? Combat is a tactical mix of turn-based grid action (Xcom, Phoenix Point) and powerful card combinations (Slay the Spire, Monster Train). This combination brings an almost ‘survival game’ aspect to Summoners Fate. Where choosing your fights and the resources you spend is as important as the cards you play and the position you take. Summoners Fate draws its inspiration from classic tabletop games like Hero Quest and Talisman. While combining tactical combat with thoughtful events decided by the trusty roll of a D20. Also, combat is turn-based, exploring the Multiverse is done in real-time, allowing you to uncover lore scrolls. As you shop for powerful cards and even attend a goblin's birthday party (don't forget your gold).
Game Features:
3 Worlds to explore, each with its own events, characters, and bosses
8 Summoners to guide through an adventure, each offering a unique ability for you to master
Over 30 characters to meet through world events, all of which can join your adventure
Over 300 cards you can collect on your quest to build the perfect deck
PvE Battle mode, the perfect arena to master your favorite Summoner
Summoners Fate roguelike deckbuilder will release in Steam Early Access on Monday 20th June. The game will feature as part of the Steam Next Fest between the 13th of June and the 20th of June. Along with support for Mac and Windows PC. The demo will be available for the duration of the festival. Which will allow players to experience the tutorial and the opening world. While Linux support will take place for the 1.0 launch. Until that time, Proton or Glorius Eggroll Proton is the workaround.
