someone stop me from writing an essay about the themes of LOCH being commonly misunderstood by later works.
okay I guess I get frustrated sometimes because adaptations and also later wuxia goes "well it's okay to want to rule the world and or be the greatest martial arts ever if you're pure of heart!" "possessing the macguffin that ruins lives won't ruin YOUR life if only you were a good enough person!!!" which. explicitly not what LOCH is about.
Like, one of the MAJOR introducing elements of the 9 yin manual is "it's a doomed book because human nature such that it is will never allow something so powerful to exist peacefully in the world! and that's why everyone who comes into contact with it either dies or suffers immense tragedy explicitly because of the book, and like, this is not just.... a... it's not just a "oh that's neat" that's a thing that happens in the plot of the book. Everyone who gets near it or hears it or touches it....dies.
For example: at the first tournament at mt hua, Wang Chongyang beats everyone else there, becomes "the strongest in the world" takes the book and doesn't look at it. He's dead within the next five years, and someone (Ouyang Feng, dw we come back to him) tries to grave rob his casket for the book.
Book then passes to Zhou Botong, Wang Chongyang's younger sworn brother, who is tasked with hiding it. On his way to hiding the book he runs into Huang Yaoshi and Huang Yaoshi's wife, Feng Heng, who are newly married and in love. HYS wants the book, so he and Feng Heng concoct a scheme to get it, tricking ZBT. HYS gets his hands on the second volume of the 9 yin manual, and within the next two years or less: 1) two of his students steal his version of the manual, betray him, and run away 2) his wife, trying to cheer him up, tries to recopy the book and dies of fatigue and exhaustion post the birth of their daughter, Huang Rong. ZBT, meanwhile, because of the book comes back to Peach Blossom Island and gets imprisoned there for the next 15 years by the angry HYS.
Mei Chaofeng and Cheng Xuanfeng, because of stealing the book and running away from Peach Blossom Island, are persecuted by the Jianghu until they make it to Mongolia where MCF is blinded and her husband CXF is killed by the six year old Guo Jing in what can only be surmised as a....weird skill issue accident. Now, MCF carries the book with her for the next ~12 years, until y'know, plot keeps happening and people keep attacking her for the book.
Her copy of the book ends up accidentally with Guo Jing, who, right after learning it gets Suicide Boated by HYS who is also now his father in law. Also on the Suicide Boat are ZBT and Hong Qigong who were only tangentially involved with the book.
Ouyang Feng (told you we'd get back to him), wants the book and uh. lets just say he loses his nephew, gets nearly drowned several times for multiple days in the ocean, and then finally loses his mind. Which, turns him from a nobleman and a respected grandmaster to a crazy person for several decades.
Oh, and as for Guo Jing who is pure of heart and a good person and learned the martial arts in the book? Yeah his reward for having the abilities he does is...defending Xiangyang for the rest of his life. The next like three decades. Yes. He dies there. With the love of his life, 4/5 of their children, their grandchildren, and his teacher.
I don't know about you but that's not a reward that's a curse on his entire family lmao.

In the middle of ep 29 I just had to pause and ask: were they even the same blood type?
I was this close to losing it. I mean, hysterics can only take you so far; all that revenge only to learn that the greatest amount of hate was for the least "responsible" person. And the basis for the hate was never even confirmed?
I felt like I'd been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray...
Like the time I got excited that Simon Le Bon was gonna be in a werewolf movie, but when I finally got to see it I realized the name I'd read months before was Samuel Le Bihan. Of course, that was was totally my fault, but Brotherhood of the Wolf was great regardless
I wasn't that close to the last straw with this show, but realizing that I'd endured several episodes of baseless revenge that never got cleared up would have gotten me there. Then I reminded myself that I still had, like, 15 minutes to go. And wouldn't ya know...
Although I still feel let down, I'd rather be let down because it feels like a lot of hype for nothing than because it was a glaring plot hole that not even the Great Wall could bridge. The flashbacks made a point of describing/characterizing Wang Xianyeng as kind of a softhearted idiot, so I can kind of see him running off half-cocked like some long, drawn out Abbott and Costello bit.
Well, after that, all hell broke loose and that was all but forgotten, but before I could even adjust, I was again reminded when I learned--though I had already suspected--that Sha Ya's tale shared the same fate.
I realize I have the power to stop watching at anytime and continuing to watch even though I know these things will continue to happen is just me torturing myself. But on the whole, it's a really good story, so I feel like I have to keep giving it a chance.

SVSSS Fic Rec
I'm updating it everyday, because time crunch.
(Mostly Bingqiu/Bingyuan, Unless Tagged)
*Different Endless Abyss
Guess I'll Die - Shen Qingqiu goes to the Endless Abyss.
Speak No Evil - SQQ gives up his voice to stop Endless Abyss. It happens anyway.
*Amnesia
Night of Yearning - Luo Binghe forgets Shen Qingqiu.
*Jinlan City Goes Differently/Different Reunion/Different Rebirth
High Mountains, How I long
Dew Over - Shen Qingqiu is reborn in the mushroom body and tries to live as Peerless Cucumber.
Honesty is Such a Lonely Word - Shen Qinqiu faces the trial, and Old Palace Master uses a truth-finding artefact.
*Time Loop/Time Travel
Just Like A Monkey (I've Been Dancing My Whole Life) - Instead of being reborn after self-destructing, Shen Qingqiu keeps coming back on the Stairs of the Brothel in Jinlan City.
Master of Dual Cultivation Series - Shen Yuan reboots his time in PIDW. He is traumatised and less happy-go-lucky. This one is multi, with Liu Qingge and Yue Qingyuan getting more focus uptill now (in the first two stories) but Luo Binghe is important too.
*Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan
Deluxe System 2.0: Co-op Mode!
Found Brother Shen brothers.
A-Yuan Has at Least Three Friends - Shen Qingqiu turns into a kid with both Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu's memory. They are the same person.
Replacement Head Disciple Shen Yuan - Set after the Abyss, before Binghe's return. Shen Brothers.
*Epic (These fics are longer and plot-heavy, and won a special place in my heart)
You Reap What You Sow - Luo Binghe is the transmigrator. I thought it would be so-so, but turned out to be one of the best ones I've ever read. Also has Shen brothers.
Xiangyang - When you are born as the daughter of your murderer, what do you do? A question for the ages. No active pairing, original LBH and his harem is present.
Uprooted - Shen Yuan transmigrates as a minor villain in PIDW. Except he's not.
To Stem the Coming Tide - Shen Qingqiu learns about Shang Qinghua a bit earlier, and they plot to avoid their fate. No Endless Abyss.
*IWYWMH & Its AUs
I Wish You Were My Husband - The epickest of epics. It produced a number of spin-offs of it's own. Maybe I should put them under separate sub-headings when I have time. Bingqiu main pair, but has past yuejiu and hints of one-sided liushen.
A Wish to Change Fate - A great fanfic to IWYWMH. Shen Yuan is actually Shen Jiu's reincarnation. This fic touched my heart in all the right ways, gave me things I didn't even know I craved. Someday I should write about it in details. Hings of Bingjiu/Bingyuan (since both are the same).
No Wish for the Wicked - Shen Yuan wasn't around to take the place of Shen Jiu. Sad.
*Bingge
to love another (and to learn yourself) - Bingge tries to get his own Shizun and brings a Shen Yuan. Even without his cultivation power, Shen Yuan is not a pushover. Binggeyuan.
How to Train Your Shen Qingqiu - Another piece I ignored for a long time, but turned out to be very good. I need to reread it.
*WIP
I usually avoid wips, but here are some of the best ones I read:
I Was Transmigrated as a Sword (Gen up till now)
Lotus Seeds - Shen Yuan runs away to save himself from the horrible fate of the Scum Villain - to the realm of the Lotus Eaters.
Scum Villain's Book of Prophecy - Shen jiu reads PIDW and learns the future. Original Luo Binghe/Original Shen Qingqiu. Almost finished, epic length.

[Hanfu・漢服]Chinese Southern Dynasties(齐・梁) Traditional Clothing Hanfu,Hairstyle & Makeup
-----
【History Note】
On the basis of the Han and Jin Dynasties Ru skirts (襦裙) , women's clothing in the Southern and Northern Dynasties developed a romantic and light artistic style. On the whole, the neckline is getting wider, the waist and the lower part of sleeve are narrowed, and the styles are changeable. This set of attirt is restored from the portrait brick figures of the Southern Dynasties in Xiangyang. The waist of the skirt is raised to the chest, it is matched with an open collar and wide sleeves, the head is combed in a butterfly-shaped bun, and it wears a fan-shaped golden hairpin. The whole set of costumes elongates the visual proportion of the human body, looks delicate and slender, and has a graceful posture. When walking, the double robes sway with the Luo skirt, which shows the pursuit of the literati of the Southern Dynasty for the posture of elegant, so there is a " 双袂齐举鸾凤翔 ". " 罗裳皎日袂随风 " the literary description of. In the later period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, this open-collar and wide-sleeved design became more and more popular, and it was popular in the north and south.
Even in the colder north, this fashion was still pursued, and it was still very popular until the Sui and Tang dynasties.

In the Romance, it's stated that Guan Yu left behind three main commanders--Mi Feng, Fu Shiren, and Pan Jun--to block Wu so he could attack Fan. Fu Shiren and Mi Feng are well known, but can you tell us about the third guy, Pan Jun? All the Romance says of him is that he's kind of a jerk and that Guan Yu should have left a different officer (it names Zhao Lei in particular) to block Wu instead.
Let's review everyone here.
SGZ 45.4 tells us that Shi Ren (Junyi) was from Guangyang. He was assigned to guard Gong'an under Guan Yu but betrayed him to Sun Quan. Guan Yu's biography (SGZ 36.1) concurs with this. It inserts the character 傅 in front of his name (leading to the misnomer Fushi Ren). SGZ 2 and SGZ 54.3 both agree with SGZ 45, so we can conclude that the character 傅 is a corruption or an error.
Mi Fang was the brother of Mi Zhu (SGZ 38.2). Their sister was married to Liu Bei before he fled to Jing province. At the time of the Fan campaign, Mi Fang was the head of Nan canton, with his headquarters at Jiangling (which he shared with Guan Yu). His family had a reputation for being skilled at the horse and bow, and he successfully helped suppress a revolt after defecting to Wu, so he was not without some talents.
Pan Jun was by far the most important and interesting of these men. His biography (SGZ 61.1) is a bit on the longer side.
Pan Jun was from Wuling in the unfashionable part of Jing. He distinguished himself as a scholar when he was young and became a military adviser in Jiangxia (where he would have served Huang Zu. He was later made magistrate of Xiangyang, making him a figure of substantial note at Liu Biao's court. When Liu Bei took over, Pan Jun became one his advisers. During the campaign for Yi province, Pan Jun was left in Jing to manage the province's affairs.
Pan Jun initially refused to serve Sun Quan when he annexed Jing but changed his mind after receiving a personal visit. He subsequently advised Sun Quan in securing the territory. When Sun Quan took the imperial title, Pan Jun was made one of the Nine Ministers. Eventually he became Minister of Ceremonies (which Wu appears to have treated as the chief of the Excellencies), a title he retained for the rest of his life.
The most notable exploit of Pan Jun's career was a campaign in the 230s. Over the course of several years he subdued the various tribes of western Jing, bringing the territory firmly under Sun Quan's control. Many of Wu's future commanders first saw serious campaigning during this episode.
However, Pan Jun and Sun Quan started to fall out later in life. Sun Quan began listening to corrupt officials and Pan Jun had no patience for that. Back when he was just a military advisor he had executed the corrupt chief of Shaxian. He wrote repeated letters to Sun Quan warning him about the unscrupulous officials at his court but to no avail. A particularly powerful official, Lu Yi, tried to have Pan Jun ousted but failed.
Eventually Pan Jun got fed up with being nice. He traveled to Jianye attempting to simply murder Lu Yi himself and face the consequences. However, Lu Yi avoided the meeting. Soon, the officials were able to prevail upon Sun Quan to punish Lu Yi, who was duly executed. Nevertheless, the rift between Sun Quan and his advisers never fully healed, and Pan Jun himself died not long after this.

There's a very cute and easy-to-miss bit of Dual Protective Boyfriending that happens here. When the Scooby Gang confronts Wang Xiangyang in this inexplicably barrel-lined industrial alley, Ya Qing arrives in an explosive poof of dark energy. In reponse:
Shen Wei starts moving the second that bird shows up, going straight for Zhao Yunlan and putting himself bodily between potential disaster and bisexual disaster. He's back on guard the second the explosive force starts to dissipate, though. His reaction times are really good when what he's reacting to is not getting a lollipop shoved in his pretty little mouth.
Chu Shuzhi tales a second longer to get going, but when he does, he grabs the hem of his coat and uses it to both spin Guo Changcheng so he's away from the explosion and cover his head. Maybe Chinese censorship thinks it's not gay when you tenderly protect another man from danger but also you look a little bit like Batman when you do it? I couldn't say.
Meanwhile, Zhu Hong, left to fend for herself on the other side, considers her two options, compares their relative sizes, and unceremoniously deputizes Lin Jing as her human shield, which honestly is a very good use for him.

Note
Tav, did I misunderstood your tags here, or Guo jing and huang rong will die at some point?? Please, tell me I misunderstood!!!
I am sorry 😔. Guo Jing and Huang Rong die defending Xiangyang with their entire family some years after the ending of ROCH (Return of the Condor Heroes) except for their younger daughter Guo Xiang. After HYS hears this he actually gets on his suicide boat because Guo Xiang comes back to search for her grandfather and there's a line about how all of Peach Blossom Island's boats are gone.
The third book of the Condor Trilogy takes place mostly about a hundred years after these deaths and follows different people.

An introduction to Wu’s Yangtze Frontline
Did this for a separate mini project earlier, thought I would share it here too
Tumblr media
Ancient location names in red (Wu) and blue (Wei); Modern counterparts in black
Wu's stretch of Yangtze was rather long, and Wu's attempts to secure the entire stretch can be viewed in three blocks: West (~Jiangling), Central (~Wuchcang), East (~Jianye).
West
Jiangling
Essentials of Geography for Reading History:
It is thus that Jiangling’s possession determines whether the north and south will split, and is related to the strength of the west and east. This is a place any knowledgeable man will surely contest.
SGZ Biography of Zhu Ran:
Wei deployed Cao Zhen, Xiahou Shang, Zhang He and others to attack Jiangling, with Emperor Wen stationed at Wan to support them...... [Sun] Quan sent Pan Zhang, Yang Can and others to rescue, but the siege was not broken. At that time, [Zhu] Ran’s soldiers in the city were all ill, and only about 5000 can fight...... The soldiers were all afraid, but [Zhu] Ran remain calm with no fear, continuing to encourage the soldiers......Wei attacked and sieged [Zhu] Ran for 6 months...... [Xiahou] Shang and others could not overcome [Zhu Ran], and so stopped attacking and retreated.
Zhu Ran’s leadership and capabilities demonstrated here were certainly commendable, but the 6-month long successful defence with just 5000 people also illustrated a city that was well-prepared and well-equipped for war.
Central
Xiakou
Jiangling, however, was not the only key city in Jing.
SGZ Biography of Liu Biao:
Liu Bao was the Inspector of Jing. Kuai Yue advised [Liu] Biao: Occupy Jiangling in the south, hold Xiangyang in the north, and all 8 commanderies of Jing Province would be pacified with just a letter.
With the Han River, movement between Xiangyang and the Yangtze bank areas is very convenient, reinforcing Jiangling on both land and water. Hence Kuai Yue's advice. Unfortunately, Wu could not obtain Xiangyang for the entire Three Kingdoms period, and that connectivity became a deadly threat -- troops from Xiangyang can access the Yangtze easaily with the Han River, and pose a serious threat to the control of Jiangling and connections betweeen Yang and Jing Province.
This is where Xiakou comes in.
Yuanhe Maps and Records of Prefectures and Counties:
Wu established commanders here..... During Three Kingdoms was a key strategic location for Wu.
Known commanders of Xiakou include: Cheng Pu, Sun Jiao, Sun Yi, Lu Shu(son of Lu Su), Sun Shen.
During Chibi, it was also here that Zhou Yu stationed his troops to fight against Cao Cao.
Wuchang
Wuchang used to be the capital of Wu for some time.
Essentials of Geography for Reading History:
Wuchang, [if] the southeast obtain it they will survive, lose it and they will perish.....Sun Quan knew that the superior strategic foothold of the southeast is definitely upstream, hence defended Xiakou, and had capital at Wuchang.
ZZTJ:
To defend at Shitou (fort near Jianye), and to also defend at Wuchang, this was how Wu was able to defend the Yangtze.
SGZ Biography of Sun Huan:
At first [Sun] Quan was at Wuchuang, wishing to return the capital to Jianye, but considered the waterways of 2000 li, [that] once an alarm was raised, would not be able to reach in time ...... [Zhang] Liang admonished: "...... To have elite troops ten thousand in Wuchang, install someone with intelligence and strategy to be the general [in command], always be discplined and on alert……" [Sun] Quan liked [Zhang] Liang's proposal the most.
East
Wan
Wan sits between Wuchang and Jianye, and surrounded by rich plains that allowed for self-sufficiency. The stratgic location was too important even for Cao Cao to destroy:
徵令内移。江西遂虚,合肥以南惟有皖城。 《三國志·吳主傳》
SGZ Biography of Sun Quan:
[Cao Cao] ordered to relocate inwards. West of thee Yangtze became empty, south of Hefei only Wan city remained [occupied].
After Wu obtained Wan, lots of resources were devoted. When Jin finally conquered Wan:
焚其積榖百八十餘萬斛,毀船六百餘艘。《资治通鉴·卷八十》
ZZTJ:
Burned more than 1.8 million hu of stored grains, destroyed more than 600 boats.
Ruxu
The Ruxu River links Yangtze with the Chao Lake, which in turn is linked to the Central Plains and major rivers up north by a series of smaller rivers and canals.
SGZ Annuals of Emperor Wu:
Spring third month, Fourteenth year [of Jian'an],the army reached Qiao, crafted light boats and trained the navy. Autumn seventh month, from the Guo River entered the Huai River, left [Huai] at Fei River [branch], and the army stationed at Hefei.
Thus, the Hefei-Ruxu passageway was the fastest and most efficient way to strike for both Wei and Wu.
SGZ:
Winter tenth month, Seventeenth year [of Jian'an], Duke [Cao] attacked Sun Quan. [Sun Quan] hearing of Duke Cao's incoming attack, built the Ruxuwu (fortress). Spring first month, Eighteenth year [of Jian'an], [Cao] army advanced to Ruxukou. [Sun] Quan resisted them for more than a month.
SGZ Biography of Lu Meng:
Later Duke Cao again attacked Ruxu, [Sun] Quan had Lu Meng as the commander, resisting at previously established fortress (Ruxuwu).
SGZ Biography of Zhu Huan:
First year of Huangwu, Wei dispatched Commander-in-chief Cao Ren leading infantry and calvary amounting to a few ten thousands to attack Ruxu ....... At the time [Zhu] Huan only had 5000 soldiers and subordinates, everyone was afraid......
Yet with all these numerous attempts, and even the 5000-man defence, Ruxu was never broken once for the entire duration of Three Kingdoms.
Essentials of Geography for Reading History:
Cao Cao on four occassions went over the Chao Lake but failed. Chao Lake's waters can link to the Yangtze in the south. Ruxu is directly guarding this passageway......therefore even though having armies of ten thousand, was not able to invade the Yangtze.
Jianye
Jianye was originally called Moling.
SGZ Biography of Zhang Hong:
[Sun] Quan said: "Moling had small rivers stretching for over a hundred li, suitable for big boats. Now I wish to manage the navy, should relocate andd station here.
Universal Geography of the Taiping Era:
Shitou (stone) City, is the Jinling town King Wei of Chu established after conquering Yue. Later Han Seventeenth year of Jian'an, Emperor Da of Wu (Sun Quan) with further renovations, renamed it to Shitou City, used for storing military grains and equipment.
Linking it all
To facilitate communication between the blocks, smoke signals were also used:
烽火以炬置孤山頭……寇至則舉以相告,一夕可行萬里。《三國志·吳主傳》
SGZ Biography of Sun Quan:
Smoke signals were ignited and placed on isolated mountains peaks.... When enemies arrive will then lift it up to inform, in one night can travel ten thousand li.
